Abductor faces judge
A judge will give his decision next Wednesday on a kidnapping case that took place at Westgate Mall in mid January. Ian James William Campbell pleaded guilty to four charges in August. Then on Monday, both defence and Crown made submissions to Judge Garth Smith in Port Coquitlam provincial court. On Jan. 19, Campbell approached a young woman on a break outside a Maple Ridge pub, asking for help with his car. As the 17-year-old drove him to his car, he pulled a fake gun and forced her to drive away from the area before beating her. After the attack, several women contacted police and said they had also been approached at the mall by a man asking them for help. He pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement, using a fake gun, and theft. - with files from The Province

Crossing safer
A $300,000 funding announcement made Wednesday afternoon will see improvements to pedestrian safety along Lougheed Highway. The project, part of the Safety Improvement for B.C. Communities, will see upgrades to current pedestrian crossings, as well as sidewalks, between 207th and 222nd streets, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing announced. “Development along Highway 7 will create a more pedestrianfriendly corridor for both residents and visitors,” he said. Upgrades include increased visibility at crosswalks and improved intersection ramps for wheelchairs and scooters. Crews have already begun sidewalk improvements along the corridor set for completion later this month.

It’s a major cache of weapons that police believe was destined to fall into the hands of criminals in the Lower Mainland and beyond. On Tuesday, Mounties showed off the major haul of guns and ammunition seized by Coquitlam RCMP’s street enforcement team during a raid back in June. And as a result, Marc Wisdom, 41, of Maple Ridge is facing 50 criminal charges including 26 counts related to firearms and ammunition, 20 counts for possession of prohibited devices, and four counts of possession of prohibited weapons. RCMP investigators alleged Wisdom was illegally selling guns in the Tri-Cities to criminals. In all, 33 firearms were displayed Tuesday, including a Galil assault rifle and

We Make the World’s Best Mattress Today, many people prefer a memory foam mattress for its pressure-relieving comfort, ability to conform and adapt to each person’s body, and outstanding motion isolation. Even so, traditional memory foam technology hasn’t changed much since it was invented more than 40 years ago. While it can provide great comfort to many, others find that memory foam mattresses can sleep too hot, sink in too deeply or make it hard to adjust sleep positions in the night. Isn’t it about time that someone reinvented memory foam? Introducing the new iComfort Sleep System by Serta, featuring our Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam - the world’s first memory foam infused with the support and cooling touch of Serta’s MicroSupport™ gel. This revolutionary new memory foam is designed to deliver superior pressure relief and more targeted support while sleeping cooler than ordinary memory foam. Plus, it is antimicrobial and dust mite resistant to help protect your mattress from potential allergens.

Terry Fox Run

Team Wakeling will be one contingent of this Sunday’s Terry Fox Run in Hammond. Ali Wakeling has pulled together the team this year in honour and memory of her husband, Sandy, one of the main organizers of the annual run, who died in July of cancer. Ali said her husband, Sandy, was involved with the Terry Fox Run, not just because of the cause – raising money for cancer research – but because Terry was a Canadian hero from his childhood. “We were 10 years old when he was running,” Wakeling said. “It had an impact on us as children – his story.” Terry Fox’s story of grit and perseverance, of running a marathon a day with a prosthetic leg, amazed Sandy, Ali recounted. Sandy was an “incredibly patriotic Canadian,” Ali said, and “the fact Terry was running across this huge country... drew him in.” It was a dream of Sandy’s to go across Canada – not running, but driving across, Ali added. Sandy joined the Terry Fox Run committee in 2000, just after he and Ali moved to Pitt Meadows. In October, 2008, he was diagnosed with gastro-intestinal stromal tumour (GIST), a rare form

Sandy noticed during his visits to the cancer agency that there were a lot of support groups and fundraisers for a lot of different kinds of cancers, but not for his rare form, which strikes only 15 people in a million. So, Sandy made a website
about GIST, as well as T-shirts and bracelets. “It was like a DIY,” Ali said. In honour of Sandy, his family is also participating in the Terry Fox Run in his hometown of Port Elgin, Ont. Betty Levens, who lost her husband to cancer in 1998, started
helping organize the local Terry Fox Run around the same time as Sandy Wakeling started. “If a cause came along, Sandy would help if he could,” Levens told The TIMES. Cancer touches people of all walks of life, Levens said, poor and rich alike. “Everybody is touched by cancer,” Ali added. “One in four people will have cancer in their lifetime.” Last year’s local run raised more than $30,000, the best it has ever done, Levens said. Levens said she likes to support the Terry Fox Foundation because of the fact that 83 cents from every dollar raised goes to research. This year’s opening ceremonies will take place in the Hammond Community Centre’s parking lot because the field is under renovation. Levens asked that people attending the Terry Fox Run not drive into the parking lot, rather park on the streets in Hammond – they will be turned away at the parking lot because that is where the run festivities will be located. Woman on trial for Pitt couple’s death Beckie Dyer and Johnny De Oliveira died in a car crash in October 2010 coming from a Justin Bieber concert. by Jennifer Saltman
Special to The TIMES
Listening once more to the agonizing details of the crash that killed their children is going to be torturous for Audrey De Oliveira and Debbie Dyer. “It’s reliving it over and over and over again, but I relive it every day. Some days are worse than others – obviously
this is one of the worst days,” Dyer said Monday outside B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, where the trial began for Andelina Kristina Hecimovic. Hecimovic, 26, is charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death in connection with the Oct. 19, 2010, incident. Johnny De Oliveira, 21, picked up his girlfriend, 19-year-old Beckie Dyer, and her friend in Vancouver after the Justin Bieber concert and dropped the friend off in Maple Ridge before heading home to Pitt Meadows. As Johnny and Beckie drove down Lougheed Highway shortly before midnight, a Toyota Paseo skidded sideways.
Johnny De Oliveira and Beckie Dyer’s mothers were at the courthouse in New Westminster Monday as the trial into their children’s death began. Jennifer Saltman The Province

With the names of loved ones firmly attached, the procession of redshirted participants left Pitt Meadows’ Spirit Square on Saturday, each step raising critical funding for research and support services for Parkinson’s disease. The Maple Ridge chapter of the Parkinson’s SuperWalk – Canada’s largest fundraiser for the Parkinson Society and its regional affiliates – is still young but coordinator Edith Elliott has seen it grow every year. “This is only our third year, but we’re still learning,” she said. “We’re getting better at it.” With an expectation of a couple hundred or more attendees, Elliott credits an increase in advertising and word of mouth as the reason for the walk’s growing popularity. She said she

All the added donations will help to reach the local walk’s goal of $25,000 to $30,000, Elliott said, optimistic at hitting the target. “I know at this point in time there’s over $9,000 in online [donations],” she said. “We could be well on our way into the $25s at least.” And while the goal may be high, the fundraiser has a history of smashing records. Last year, the
walk received $19,800 in donations – seven times the amount received in its inaugural year. “I actually got a phone call from the organizer to the society saying, ‘Um, are these figures right?’” Elliott recounted. “She couldn’t believe it, that little Maple Ridge made so much money!” Money raised by the walk will go to fund research, education, and support services offered by the Parkinson Society. Currently, there are more than 11,000 people living with Parkinson’s in B.C.

Our View
Running for good things Years ago, when BC Place Stadium was being built and the people in charge were considering what to call it, there was a strong lobby to name it after a young fellow who had recently failed in his attempt to run all the way from the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland to the Pacific in B.C. The powers that be discarded the suggestion. They felt that the young man who lost his battle to cancer not long after he was forced to truncate his trek across Canada would soon be forgotten, and it would leave everyone puzzled as to why anyone Scan had bothered to name such with an important edifice after “some Terry Fox kid.” Leave aside the backwards logic of that decision – we name buildings and places to remember the people we honour, not to add prestige to a building – the one-legged runner who brought all of Canada to tears when he was forced to abort his Marathon of Hope at Thunder Bay, near the halfway point of his quest, remains a household name throughout Canada and beyond. In fact, Terry Fox’s goal – initially to raise a million dollars, later upgraded to $24 million (one dollar for every Canadian at the time) for cancer research – has been shattered many times over. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised through annual Terry Fox Runs, simple fundraising events by which runners, walkers, and strollers honour a young man whose courage and determination has inspired millions of people in at least 60 countries around the world. On Sunday, Terry Fox’s marathon continues, including one-, five-, and 10-kilometre walk/runs starting at Hammond Stadium at 10 a.m. Terry Fox’s real goal – to overcome cancer – has not yet been realized. But we’re running towards it! – B.G.

Health care
Riverview proposal has drawbacks Dear Editor,
The proposal to reopen Riverview [Dr. Masse pushes to re-open Riverview, Aug. 29, TIMES] is not necessarily a good one. I met an individual who was placed in Riverview decades ago by some wellmeaning physician who did not fully understand learning differences, i.e. ADD and ADHD. This individual came from a family of seven children. His parents were not well educated, not well informed, and not-
fortunate, financially. They placed a small child in Riverview who in today’s standards would have been a graduate of our school system and a productive member of society. Instead, the drugs they used at Riverview have left him more in a vegetative state, and he now resides in a group home. Riverview did make him compliant, and less of an inconvenience. My example is only a small portion of the people who were placed in Riverview.
Provincial politics
Bonuses cut into services Dear Editor,
Perhaps we wouldn’t have to be looking at cutting services to British Columbians if the BC Liberals took responsibility for the out-of-control executive salaries and bonuses at their organizations (like BC Ferries) and Crown corporations (like ICBC and BC Hydro), and actually charged for the sale of our resources (like water) instead of giving them away. We really don’t have to look too hard for savings
Cheryl Baron, Maple Ridge
I’m curious if Councillor Bob Masse [Proposal not about addiction, Sept. 5 Letters, TIMES] would place a member of his own family in Riverview? Would he like to reside there? What drugs would he want prescribed to a loved one? Less fortunate people do not need to be marginalized further. They need acceptance and assistance towards a long-term solution that benefits both them and all members of society. I question whether opening Riverview will provide any better solutions than it did before it was originally closed. It’s just too easy to discard people and forget about them, as opposed to working toward finding creative alternatives to a very real problem. For the record, I am not related to Gordy Robson [Re-opened Riverview won’t solve addictions, Sept. 3, Just Saying, TIMES].
Marie Robson, Maple Ridge

Fundraiser
Teens offer healing music
A Garibaldi student is raising money for BC Children’s Hospital. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
After seeing a fellow Garibaldi student struggle with a serious medical condition, Sara Stanley wanted to reach out and raise money for the hospital that helps many children with serious illnesses. On Sept. 19, she will host Rock the Ridge, a fundraiser for BC Children’s Hospital, at her high school at 24789 Dewdney Trunk Rd., with a lineup of young musicians including DaniElle, Michelle Clarke, Ami Owens, Cecilia Ferreira, Northern Rain, Ria Jade, and Hayley & Fletcher. Stanley has set a goal of raising $2,000, but she said she’ll be happy if she
raises $1,000. Hayley Schmidt and Fletcher Allard make up the duo Hayley & Fletcher, who will play some folksy blues at the concert. Allard, who is a student at Garibaldi, but attends School of Rock at Samuel Robertson Technical, is familiar, as an epileptic, with the corridors and offices of BC Children’s Hospital. “I’ve been going [there] all my life,” he said. Schmidt believes that music has a healing

Lobby nights
Writers meet, network The publishing industry is changing rapidly. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Writing can be a very solitary profession so local writers have banded together to network and support each other. The Golden Ears Writers group has been meeting for about two and a half years, first starting as writing critique nights, and then morphing into workshops and reading nights. Next week, the group launches its 2013/14 season, and they have lined up speakers for three sessions this fall ending with a December evening of readings with a winter holiday theme. Katherine Wagner, a former TIMES columnist, has been running the group with Ronda Payne (a freelance writer for The TIMES,
as well), and Andrea Walker. They meet at The ACT on the third Tuesday of the month as part of the arts society’s lobby nights. The publishing industry is changing so fast that the group often focuses on upand-coming trends. New genres like flash fiction and technology like desktop publishing have changed how writers work and get their pieces published. “You blink and it changes,” Wagner said. “It’s in such a state of flux.” The group attracts novice to experienced writers, and those who want to be published and those who just write for personal enjoyment. At their lobby nights, the speakers often have interactive activities, and then there are breaks for networking. For Wagner, the group gets her out of her “writ-
ing cave” and connected with other local writers – her current goal is 2,000 words per day. There are a lot of writers out there and it takes a lot of work to get anything published, she said. “It’s a tough business – I do it because I love it,” she said. It went over the top of the concrete median into the westbound lanes, flipped and smashed into the roof of the Suzuki Swift that Johnny was driving. Police said the couple were killed on impact. The driver of the Toyota, Hecimovic, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. Witnesses reported that the Toyota Paseo was being driven aggressively. It is alleged that Hecimovic was speeding and tried to pass other vehicles in a designated right-turn lane before she lost control and crashed just east of Harris Road. Charges were laid in May 2011. Although difficult to sit through, De Oliveira hopes the trial will help her begin living her life again. “I want closure. I want it over so I can move on,” she said. Dyer knows their lives won’t ever be the same, but hopes their story will remind people to slow down and pay attention when they’re on the road. She also wants politicians in Ottawa to institute stiffer penalties for drivingrelated fatalities. “It needs to stop because nobody else needs to go through this hell – every day it’s hell,” Dyer said. “Hug your kids close – keep ‘em close. Hug them, tell them that you love them every day because you never know what’s going to happen.” Beckie Dyer was a past recipient of the Lynn Papp Award, given out on Pitt Meadows Day to a youth who “participates in community based activities and projects, giving freely of their personal time and energies, without expectation of personal reward or recognition,” according to the nomination papers.

Niceties
It’s not really polite to ask someone how they are
T
here comes a time in life when the last question you wish to be asked is, “How are you?” You may be waiting to go into the theatre, or walking by the river, or just about to select something delectable from the cheese counter, your attention momentarily far away from your deteriorating physical condition, when, bang, without warning, someone is at your elbow wanting to know. You look around at the friendly inquiring face, expectation of an answer written all over it, and all you can manage is an unconvincing, “Fine, thank you.” and then, because it is expected, “How are you?” The quiet joy of the moment is gone, your anticipation of the
show you are going to see or the cheese you were going to pair with some fresh crusty bread and a glass of Valpolicella, is set aside as you not only remember your own aches and pains, but are forced – through politeness – to listen to a list of those of the one who interrupted you. My wife, I am sure will tell me that this is simply a nice thing to do, asking another how they are. But, I’m not so sure. I noticed, by the way, that in England you seldom hear a person asking another how they are. When two people meet, the conversion goes something like this: Person one, “All right then.” There is a slight raising of the voice on “then,” but not enough to make it a question that requires an answer.
Person two, “All right.” Also with a slight inflection in the tone of voice. And, usually, that is that. There is no further reference to the physical, mental, or emotional health of either party. Each has satisfied the social niceties without seriously invading the other’s train of thought. One of my oldest and dearest friends moved to Australia and lived and died there. He lived for many years with a particularly unpleasant cancer, a visitor to which he reluctantly gave house room, but he had other things to think about and talk about when someone met him in an art gallery or passed him in the street. He was a fine potter and he spun his wheel and fired the
results of the spinning until shortly before his death. For years we wrote to each other, long detailed letters about our lives and our thoughts, about what we had seen and heard and felt and wished for. Not once did I ask him how he was, nor did he ask me. When he was dying, I called once a week and we talked. At first he would be outside and I could hear the birds in the eucalyptus trees; later he would be inside and if I listened carefully, I could hear the soft murmuring of the fire he sat close beside to keep the chill at bay. He said he enjoyed breathing the warmth into his lungs. Then one day, when death was closing in, he told me that there was nothing he wanted; he still
Here and There by Alan Woodland
enjoyed the company of friends, but he had stopped reading and listening to music; he could handle the cancer and the thought that death was close. All he asked was that people would not ask him how he was. He said he knew they meant well, but the level of thoughtlessness they showed made him want to swear at them, and that upset him because that was not how he wanted to spend his last days on earth. I thought you might like to know that.

Children drawn by Teddy Bear Picnic Grace Williams, resident teddy bear doctor, examined Lily the rabbit as part of the Teddy Bear Picnic at the Haney Farmers Market on Saturday. Whether adopting a new stuffed animal or bringing their own, children could ensure their fuzzy friend had a clean bill of health, along with designing pipe-cleaner eyeglasses as part of the event. In the meantime, Darren Exley, 29, entertained the crowds with his soulful melodies at the market held in Memorial Peace Park. His set consisted of a mix of acoustic guitar and piano, along with vocals. The Maple Ridge musician has been singing for 10 years, and said he has a wide musical taste from which he draws.

A short jaunt uphill along 102nd Avenue in the Albion area will take you to a mountain bike park that is sure to be well used in the coming weeks, months, and years. The Albion Mountain Bike Skills Park at 24539 102 Ave. is still under construction but is already being ridden on by mountain bike enthusiasts, from toddlers to adults. The park, which encompasses under an acre of land and has a price tag of roughly $40,000 of municipal funds, has been in process for more than five years, according to Sylvia Pendl, park planning technician with Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services. A few years ago Barry Lyster from Local Ride Bike Shop led a group that had tried to kick start the project, but was unable to proceed, Pendl said. Later, Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association member Stan Hunter approached the municipality about the possibility of creating the park. “A lot of people have been asking us about this so we had a tiny bit of funding,” Pendl said. “These parks are a bit different from what people are used to [when they] think about mountain biking. They’re not just kids out on a trail with shovels. There is a large, earth-moving endeavour. We needed some money to get some dirt and move this dirt around.” Pendl said there is a very strong mountain biking community in the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows area. “Maple Ridge is a [mountain biking] destination,” she said. “People come here for mountain biking. The trails and the landscape are beautiful here.” That said, the park is designed for locals. “You can ride there, you can walk there,” Pendl said. Cory Derpak, owner of ESP Parks, helped design and build the course, which consists of dirt jumps, berms, rollers, a multi-use roll in, and graduated drops. “He [Derpak] and I worked collaboratively with Stan [Hunter] as to what was going to be built,” Pendl said. “I had a rough plan and they sort of took it from there.” Derpak, a former professional mountain bike rider who builds mountain bike parks in the greater Vancouver area, said this newest addition to the Albion area is different than other parks he has designed. “We designed it to fit the lay of the land really well,” Derpak said. “It’s less linear than the traditional mountain bike park, with more flow and functionality in mind.” Derpak gave the park a test run himself. “Everything I build, I ride,” he said. “It’s amazing. Everything flows super well, it’s got really good drainage and the features are just

Brother and sister Oliver (above), five, and Ruby-Faith Jordan, seven, were at the new Albion Mountain Bike Skills Park on 102nd Avenue on Tuesday afternoon testing out the hills and valleys. Their dad, Kevin Jordan, said his children are gaining more confidence every time they come to the park. perfect for the lay of the land.” While the course is ride-able “it’s not done by any means,” Pendl said. “There are wooden features that we need to finish, and planting,” she said. “This part is now when the volunteers take over, and they will finish the rest.” Construction is ongoing. “Because it’s going to be volunteer-driven, the rest of it is going to be up to the volunteers,” Pendl said. “I imagine they’ll be working on things over winter. We’re hoping it will be substantially complete by spring.” Pendl said the public response to the new addition to the Albion area has been “pretty positive.” “I’ve been going down to the park and seeing how the kids are using it, just so that helps
us in terms of any changes that we might need to make,” she said. Pendl even saw a four-year-old rider navigate a section of the course. “That’s the great thing about this park,” she said. “We’ve designed it with the intent that it is going to be an all-ages and there are a lot of areas where moms can stand and watch their kids.” The park’s features are progressive, from easy to difficult. But there are inherent risks that comes with a sport such as mountain biking. “I think you take a risk when you participate in those kinds of sports, but we do recommend that people wear hopefully a full face helmet and body armour,” Pendl said. “There are all sorts of ways you can protect yourself.”

The three Berard girls of Maple Ridge seemed to travel the world this summer, with (left) 14-yearold Miranda (a Grade 9 student at Maple Ridge Secondary) and her older sister Alexa, 17 (a Grade 12 student at MRSS) travelling to Europe with the Laity District Rangers for a month. They visited Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, and England – where they had their pictures taken holding a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES, in front of their youth hostel and (inset) at Stonehedge. In the meantime, the youngest, 11-year-old Danica, a Grade 6 Fairview Elementary student, travelled with her parents, DonnaLee and Chuck, on an Alaskan cruise. They visited Alaska and the Yukon and Danica had her picture taken on the train that runs the White Pass and Yukon Route between Skagway and Whitehorse.
