A judge has determined that Andelina Hecimovic is not guilty of dangerous driving causing death in an accident that killed two Pitt Meadows residents. Beckie Dyer and Johnny De Oliveira both died in October 2010 when Hecimovic’s car flipped over and landed on their vehicle. Justice M. Groper handed down the ruling Wednesday in New Westminster Supreme Court. Hecimovic had been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, but was found not guilty on both counts. Dyer was 19 and De Oliveira, 21, on Oct. 19, 2010, when they died in the car accident coming home from a concert.

Less than an hour later, the incident was resolved, as police determined the women inside were safe and they were taken in for questioning, Bruce explained. There seems to be a discrepancies in the time, however, between when the men reportedly entered the local house with a possible gun and when police cleared the bungalow. There were no men in the house when police entered, Bruce confirmed. “Where did the guys go?” she questioned.

After briefly admiring her find, it’s dropped onto a growing pile of refuse underneath the 232nd Street bridge beside Maple Ridge Park. Ashlie and the two other volunteers manning the graffiti-covered ledge continue searching the area for more refuse. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is well underway. Sponsored by the Vancouver Aquarium and the World Wildlife Fund, and put on by the Alouette River Management Society (ARMS), the event sees community volunteers come together across Canada to help clean up and protect local rivers, streams, and shorelines. For Maple Ridge residents, that meant a Saturday patrolling the various areas around Maple Ridge Park, which resides along the Alouette River. “It’s really important to keep our streams healthy,” said Nicole Driedger, volunteer and education co-ordinator with ARMS. “All of the trash that comes down the storms drains and into the river actually winds up in the ocean.” As well, cleanup of the river helps the local eco-system as well, as it allows salmon to return to their spawning grounds and introduce much needed nutrients into the surrounding soil. “We live in a temperate rain forest, and the Alouette River provides the highway to all the streams where the salmon spawn,” said Driedger. “Without the stream and without the salmon, we wouldn’t have the forest.” With an estimated turnout of 40 volunteers, and approximately 14 large bags of trash picked up, Driedger and her co-worker, executive director Greta Borick-

Among the garbage were food wrappers, beverage cans, plastic bags, clothing, foam, plastic, and metal – some of the stranger items were mangoes and lemons, construction material, and half sunken boats, said Laurie Darcus, one of the 19 volunteers who were cleaning up the shoreline. Darcus was especially grossed out at finding 916 cigarette butts, which she pointed out are “very toxic” for small animals and birds. “Make sure they are extinguished and put them into the garbage can, please,” she said. The Pitt Meadows Paddling Club members were in canoes and kayaks on the water helping clean muddier areas. “I am so grateful to all the volunteers who came out and helped, some getting a little muddy just to keep our shorelines clean,” Darcus said. “It is not just esthetically important, but wildlife can really suffer from all this litter and debris, from getting tangled in it, to ingesting poison.”

The Golden Ears Transition Initiative (GETI) is a network of organizations promoting sustainability – and its founder Geri Pinel would like to see this same thing for youth in the community. Pinel is in the early stages of starting a youth action coalition which would work like GETI, providing a forum to share ideas and resources. “This is the world [youth] will be inheriting – they have to have some say in that,” Pinel said. Creating a forum for youth will give them “ a much louder voice in the community,” he added. “Youth in our community” is the theme of GETI Fest this year, scheduled to run at Memorial Peace Park on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with tents, displays, and the annual parade with people on all non-fossil-fuel modes of transportation taking part. Members of the Pitt Meadows Fire & Rescue Service will be taking off their boots for a good cause this weekend. Firefighters will be collecting donations Saturday, Sept. 21 for the annual Fill the Boot campaign for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Proceeds from the event go towards helping those living with muscular dystrophy by providing them with the essential services they need to live healthy, active, and independent lives. Brad Perrie, assistant fire chief for the City, said the department has been involved in the boot drive for a number of years. “It’s been really great,” Perrie said. “We look forward to doing this every year.” In previous years, the department has raised between $6,000 and

Nahachewsky’s goal is to raise at least $500 for the local food bank. “I would love to challenge or ask other local businesses to also contribute a little bit,” Nahachewsky said. “This is my way of giving back.” By the time she closed her shop’s doors for the day on Sept. 5, the first day of the fundraising drive, Nahachewsky had already collected $75 towards her goal.

“I’d like to start it for the month, but if it does well, I’d like to progress it right through to December,” she said. “Basically it’s just helping out with the food bank. From what I know, they can always use help. I want to be one of those businesses that help out. You give what you get.” She has owned the shop for three years and welcomes a number of regulars ranging from RCMP officers, to doctors and nurses, many returning to augment their body art. “I have the RCMP who hang out here… everybody hangs out here. It’s turned into a clubhouse,” she said.

Nahachewsky has no prior connection to the Friends In Need Food Bank. She simply woke up one morning and said to herself, “Let’s do it. Let’s help somebody.” Initially, Nahachewsky had planned on accepting nonperishable food donations, in exchange for a certain percentage off the cost of each customer’s tattoo. “But the food bank can stretch five dollars farther than a can of soup,” she said. “So that’s how this all started.” Located at 22353 Lougheed Hwy., Authentic Ink Tattoo is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday

Lots of gas in jobs report The provincial government’s BC Jobs Plan 24-month progress report looks pretty rosy… or at least, its report on the report looks good. The actual report itself is loaded with rose-coloured baffle-gab that attempts to mask a grim reality – the province isn’t really doing particularly well in a continuing sluggish global economy that has almost nobody doing very well. Premier Christy Clark maintains she is “tremendously proud” of the Jobs Plan’s “progress” since it was instituted two years ago. Jobs, Tourism and Skills Scan Training Minister Shirley with Bond, who has most recently inherited responsibility for the Jobs Plan, optimistically adds that the report “shows that our plan is working.” The report is peppered with positive enthusiasm suggesting successes – but it is also salted with carefully chosen euphemisms that hide realistic phrases that bury the success under politicians’ questionable hopes and dreams. The province is “on the threshold” of success, and has “successfully aided in the progress” towards “prospective” agreements that could (if they get beyond the prospective stage) realize 29,000 jobs. In fact, the province’s private sector is down thousands of full-time jobs – in real numbers, not just short of goals – since the Job Plan was instituted in 2011. Naturally, Clark’s government continues to pin its hopes on liquified natural gas – but reading between the carefully worded lines suggests that the dream is many kilometres short of pipe. The dismal economy is a problem for everyone. We get that. It’s the dishonesty that rankles. The 140 to 144 cars in the trains are for economic reasons, and some are heavier than others, due to the cargo they are carrying. Mr. Sutherland should realize that the items he buys from place like Canadian Tire, or the car parts he buys and the tires he buys plus some of the food he eats, come to him via train transportation. As he has lived in the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows area for 10 years, he must have seen what some of the trains were carrying. The speed of the trains is regulated. How fast they can travel on rails is not much more than he would travel on the highways that parallel the tracks, and if he doesn’t like the way the trains move, he should move to where there are no trains, and stop buying his food – and other items – that the trains bring in. Gun report evolves into robbery case

Gosselin was able to give the all clear. “We’re confident there’s no risk to the public,” he said, after ordering some of the officers on scene to stand down. It was confirmed there was no

imminent danger, Bruce noted later. But the investigation is continuing. Thursday morning, local Mounties were reporting the incident involved an alleged robbery of cash, jewelry, and electronics. No arrests had been made Wednesday morning. This is the same address where a 29-year-old man was shot and subsequently airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries almost two years ago. Police alleged at the time it was

not a random incident, and that the shooting might have been linked to the drug trade. Ryan Verne Gilpin later turned himself into police and was charged with attempted murder with a firearm following the incident. It’s unclear at this point if that court case has been concluded, or if those involved in the 2011 incident had anything to do with Wednesday’s incident at the Maple Ridge home.

They visited the badlands or desert area of Alberta, checking out the thin spire of rock formations – some five- to 150-feet tall – left by wind and water erosion. The Maple Ridge kids also toured the nearby Royal Tyrell Museum (inset) in Drumheller, where there are 40 dinosaur skeletons (like the one behind them) as well as thousands of fossil speciemens.
