After nine months of renovations, an American retail giant opened its doors in Maple Ridge, anchoring a local mall. by Maria Rantanen
The doors opened to the Maple Ridge location of Target on Wednesday morning, and by noon, the store was bustling with customers and the parking lot was crowded with cars. After about nine months of construction, shoppers at Haney Place Mall can now walk through from one end to the other, starting at the new anchor store, Target, and ending at the other relatively new anchor, Thrifty Foods, at the east end. Several merchants at Haney Place Mall were happy the retail store was finally open. Debbie Heron, manager of the Haney Place Mall location of Cartel Jewels, said being next to Target in the mall is “great” for business. “I’m ecstatic it’s open,” Heron said. “We really needed this store... Maple Ridge needs a department store.” Heron lives locally and is pleased to have the new retail store in Maple Ridge. “I don’t want to go out of town to shop,” she said. Zellers closed last February to make way for Target, which had bought out the lease. Ashley Rudolph, manager at Bryan’s, a women’s clothing store in the mall, said she hopes that Target will attract other big name stores to the mall. “People like to shop local so I’m happy for people who live locally,” she said about Target opening at Haney Place Mall. Shari Craig, manager of Black Bond Books, is also happy that through traffic will pass her store again. “It’s nice having that side open again.”

Council starts crunching preliminary budget numbers Councillors met Tuesday to kick off its 2014 budget planning. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Michael Morden Maple Ridge councillor
Maple Ridge council members are getting ready to hammer out the budget for next year, which will determine property taxes for 2014 and where the taxes will be spent.
A preliminary working estimate, using the information they currently have, is that taxes will go up roughly 3.25 per cent in Maple Ridge. However, Councillor Michael Morden, who chairs the finance and audit committee, said council will be presented with different options for tax increases and their implications – but not necessarily a zero-per-cent increase option like Pitt Meadows council looked at.
GET A SET OF WINTER TIRES
Morden pointed out that the numbers presented at Tuesday’s finance and audit meeting are “preliminary numbers” and any slight variation could have a “significant impact” on other areas . “Discussions on a whole variety of issues and line items will take place during business planning,” he said. “Once these are complete, then we can solidify the final numbers.” On Tuesday afternoon, all of coun-

cil took part in the committee meeting in anticipation of budget deliberations at the beginning of December. Council looked at what areas are driving the budget upwards, how taxes could be lowered and what would be the implication, and what has been done to contain costs and find efficiencies, for example, shared services and service delivery improvements.

Family homeless after rash of fires Police and fire officials are investigating three suspicious fires in downtown Maple Ridge early Wednesday. by Roxanne Hooper
Firefighters and police are treating a house fire in the 11900 block of 223rd Street as suspicious following an early morning blaze that gutted the residence.
rhooper@mrtimes.com
A family has lost everything, including their home and most of their worldly possessions, in what could be a rash of arson fires in downtown Maple Ridge this morning. A screeching smoke detector is credited with waking a sixmember family – including two adults and four teenage children – from a sound sleep around 5:30 Wednesday morning. Fortunately, everyone was able to get out safely as flames consumed much of the 1930s house at the corner of 223rd Street and 119th Avenue, said recently promoted deputy fire chief Howard Exner. This was one of four early morning calls received by Maple Ridge firefighters, three being blazes that officials are describing as suspicious. The house fire on 223rd Street was the most serious of the blazes, Exner explained. Because of the age of the home, he said “it was a difficult fire to control.” The fire started on the outside of the house, but quickly spread up the back wall into the attic, he said. Fire damage was extensive, Exner elaborated. While the front exterior of the house looked almost unscathed, windows were blown out and the inside and back of the house were torched and charred, including numerous

rooms seriously damaged by fire and heat. Much of what wasn’t destroyed by the fire, has been damaged by smoke and water damage, he confirmed. The family renting the downtown home is being cared for by Emergency Social Services in the short term. It’s not believed they had content insurance, and it’s expected – Exner said – they’ve lost most of their personal possessions. They were allowed back inside later that same day to attempt to salvage some of their personal effects. Incidents like this drive home the importance of smoke detectors, because these family members did escape with the most important thing – their lives, he
explained. “The smoke alarm definitely worked in this case,” Exner added. Crews were on scene all morning mopping up and investigating the cause of this blaze – an investigation being run in conjunction with the Ridge Meadows RCMP. In the meantime, both fire and police officers are also investigating a dumpster fire just a short distance away in the 22500 block of Lougheed Highway around the same time, as well as another fire that had the potential to consume a house in the 11900 block of Garden Street. In the case of the Garden Street fire, a blaze was also started outside the house. But, thanks to the fast actions of the resident
and a neighbour, the flames were extinguished before firefighters arrived. Initially, firefighters were also called to a three-storey apartment at 222nd Street and 119th Avenue early Wednesday morning. Residents evacuated the building when the fire alarm sounded. While fire crews feared it might initially be related to a rash of fire calls coming in from the downtown core about the same time, fire chief Dane Spence confirmed later that it was nothing more than a water leak from the roof that triggered the alarms. Police are not yet saying much about any of Wednesday’s fires. Spence said fire officials are not willing to link them. They will investigate each separately.

Thieves steal from autistic boy and car dealer A 12-year-old autistic boy was emotional wrought this week, when he learned thieves made off with his bicycle from outside the Maple Ridge Library. But Nathan Antone’s frown has literally been turned upside down, said his mother Kassandra Antone, who has been overwhelmed by the community spirit demonstrated after word of the theft was made public by The TIMES. Since then,
several people have offered to replace young Nathan’s bike. “I am blown away. I’m really humbled that people want to help someone locally, when we – as a society – want to help the Philippines,” Mom said. The theft occurred between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Tuesday while Nathan was at the library with his younger sister, 10-year-old Alyssa. Immediately after the theft,
Kassandra pleaded for help finding the missing bike. In the meantime, Deon van der Heever reported to The TIMES a brazen theft at Marv Jones Honda that same afternoon. “A dude just stole a BMW M6 from our dealership,” he said, noting the person just started the car and before the salesman could get in, he took off down Lougheed [Highway],” he said. • More at www.mrtimes.com

Grannies angry about fees
Hospital parking is a burden on seniors, according to a protest group. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The Maple Ridge Raging Grannies are angry that visitors and patients to the local hospital have to pay for parking and this Saturday, they will be expressing their rage musically. Oosha Ramsoondar said that pay parking is “discriminatory against all patients but in particular seniors who tend to need the services of our hospitals more than any other age group.” “Many seniors, who are on fixed incomes, have complained about these fees which are a financial burden not only on the patients themselves but on loved ones and friends who visit,” she added. Parking at Ridge Meadows Hospital is
$3.50 for the first hour and $3 for each additional hour. The day rate is $8.25 and evening rates are $5.25. The parking lot is maintained by Impark, but Fraser Health oversees parking services for all the health authorities in the Lower Mainland. Maple Ridge resident Lausanne Ham said her 80-year-old father hesitated driving himself to the hospital because he didn’t have enough money for parking. “Delaying his hospital trip affected his illness,” Ham said. Duanne Van den Berg pointed out that if someone is coming to the hospital for tests or to visit someone, it’s hard to know how long it will take. “How can you run out in your hospital gown to put in more money?” she said. It’s not right that a private company makes a profit on sick people, she added. The Raging Grannies will be on the hospital grounds at 10:30 a.m. to sing their protest songs.

Tax options to be presented ...continued from page A1
Key cost drivers in next year’s budget include RCMP, infrastructure maintenance, the fire department, the parks master plan, drainage improvements, and contribution to the District’s reserves. Morden pointed out that the policing costs alone are increasing by seven per cent, something that is decided by higher levels of government. Throughout the budget planning process, District staff have to listen to council at different times, and then present a budget with these thoughts in mind, also taking into account long-term planning and regulatory requirements, Morden said.
Celebrate Our
“It’s a huge amalgamation of lots of balls in the air and quite a challenge to have it land right,” he added. “It’s difficult to please everyone all the time, hence why we go through this whole process.” Morden said that the District is aiming to present a budget that is easy to read and understand. Looking at a $110 million budget can be “overwhelming” but he said the way it will be presented this year with things like pie charts should make it easier to understand. Business planning takes place on Dec. 9 and 10, and these meetings are open to the public.

Our View
Pipe conditions get slick shrift Last week, B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Alberta Premier Alison Redford got down to some serious business of smiling for the cameras. Previously, Clark had famously said that no pipelines would even be considered in B.C. until Alberta and the proponents had satisfied her government’s five extremely vague conditions. Though it did not contain a single detail, Tuesday’s press conference seemed to announce that “progress” had been made. We do know that one of the five conditions – the one demanding a share of royalties to compensate B.C. for taking on the environmental risk – is still a non-starter for Alberta. But apparently, staff for both premiers put on their beer goggles Monday night and concluded that that impasse doesn’t stop B.C. from demanding money from the pipeline companies themselves. Presto, the deal was back on, along with one of Clark’s treasured photo ops. We don’t know if Clark and Redford really are besties now or if they ever were the frenemies they appeared to be. But all of this lends credence to the cynics who predicted the “five conditions” were all just talk – with plenty of wiggle room. Neither premier actually has a veto in whether the pipeline gets approved. It’s the National Energy Board that gets to decide whether or not the Northern Gateway will become a reality. And we really have to wonder if the NEB will approve a pipeline that the vast majority of B.C. citizens oppose. The biggest X-factors in all of this are still the dozens of First Nations who will have their territories bisected by a pipeline – a pipeline that, so far, they have indicated they are dead set against. We’d bet the Clark and Redford lovein will not be the end of the pipeline debate. Not by a long shot. – Glacier Media

Centre Conservative claim bizarre
Dear Editor, Jim Bulpit claims Liberals to be right of centre [Centre Conservatives beat left NDP, Nov. 7 Letters, TIMES]. It’s most bizarre to claim Conservatives are the centre party and the Liberals are to the right. The Conservatives
are closer to the Tea Party right-wing extremists in the United States. They are following the Tea Party policy of loony economics. In this economic downturn, their solution is to make it worse by creating unemployment and not

God included in original song
Dear Editor, When Robert Stanley Weir wrote the English words to O Canada, he did mention God and sons [Our national anthem should never be changed, Nov. 7 Here and There, TIMES]. He wrote four refrains, and the last is: “Ruler supreme who hearest humble prayer, hold our dominion within Thy loving care. Help us to find O God in Thee, a lasting rich reward as waiting for the better day we stand on guard.” A simple Google search confirms it. Cherryl Katnich, Maple Ridge
investing in growth. They are focused on debt, instead of investing for the future. An economy can not grow without government investing in education and infrastructure. It has been four years of recession, because the right-wing conservatives are more concerned with the wealth of the rich. The Conservatives’ interpretation of financial management is to do nothing. The left NDP want to spend more on non-growth social services. The middleground Liberals promise growth by investing in the future. The far-right Conservatives just hope for trickle-down growth from the rich. Dan Banov, Maple Ridge

Many never got to come back home to their families and loved ones – that’s the ultimate sacrifice they made for us. So, when I see so many not getting out to vote or participate in our democracy, I’m deeply saddened. And I think of what so many brave men and women did for us in the Second World War. Growing crowd of Whonnockians pay respects
A record 65 people gathered at Whonnock Lake centre on Nov. 11, to remember the local veterans. by Tracey Rayson editorial@mrtimes.com

A stoic 10-year-old Austin Rowand walked with valiant demeanor, perhaps like that of his late great-grandfather, Fred Lovatt, who served as a minesweeper in the First World War. He carried a poppy wreath with his grandfather, Stan Lovatt, 71, and then set it next to the Second World War and Korea commemorative plaque at the Whonnock Lake service Monday. “It makes me feel good,” said Rowand, referring to participating and taking time to remember. Those who knew Fields, joined in, and some responded to the second reading by replying, “We shall remember them.” Two minutes of silence was observed at exactly 11 a.m. Whonnock Lake community association treasurer Noreen Woods was in attendance along with her family – including her father-in-law Forest Paul Woods, a member of the Royal Canadian air force. He served in England from the end of 1943 to the end of 1946. Despite the horrors of war, Forest recalled fonder memories: “There were civilians that treated us good,” he said. “We could be on the road looking to hitch a ride, and they would always pick us up; if they had anything to share, they would split it with us; I recall fish and chips, but they would share anything they had to eat – compared to the civilian population – we were well-fed.”

Remembrance Day
King swings into The ACT
A near sold-out crowd was swaying in its seats to Dal Richards’ music. by Tracey Rayson editorial@mrtimes.com
From the first sax notes, the smooth and cool stylings were immediately memorable to the nearly sold-out crowd, an audience who has obviously grown up with the music of Dal Richards. So it was quite the honour for Margaret Kury, acting sergeant-at-arms for the local Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88, to introduce the 95-year-old big band legend and his orchestra at a special Remembrance Day show on Nov. 11 at The ACT.
The crowd responded with joyful approval, swaying in their seats, arms moving, and seats dancing to the trumpet riffs of Richards’ opening signature song, In the Mood. His song list included a couple dozen numbers, which he moved through with the same precision he conducts with – graceful yet spirited. “Out of my group of songs, we hope they all are favourites for the audience,” Richards said. “Two favourites, certainly, Sentimental Journey, and I’ll Be Seeing You, is my guess.” Regardless of how many times he performs the same song, Richards said it’s always fresh, because the audience is always fresh.

Regional investment
Aerospace convention helps open door to growth
S
ince 2009, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and Mission – three of B.C.’s fastest growing communities – have been working together on a number of initiatives to grow the region’s economy. This work is carried out under the “Invest North Fraser” brand. This regional approach to economic development increases opportunities, offers new perspectives, and leverages resources. Together, we all win. In 2011, Invest North Fraser was fortunate to be selected as a pilot project by the Government of B.C.’s Ministry of Jobs, Tourism & Skills Training’s BC Jobs Plan. Through an economic forum in December 2011, 67 opportunities were identified by close to 100 delegates. This list was then whittled down to nine workable projects for the North Fraser region. The projects were chosen based on their potential to drive future investment and job creation. For Pitt Meadows, our office has been working on an agrifood hub project and the Pitt Meadows airport international education and business park project. International goodwill
Good things do indeed come in small packages It’s that time of year again, when packing items in a shoebox will lift a child’s spirits overseas.
the time and effort to pack a shoebox can definitely brighten a child’s life. “Words can’t describe it,” said Gustafson, who before taking on the coordinator role volunteered by packing shoeboxes for children. “It makes such a difference in a child’s life. was in 2006. “This is life-changing. It’s a reality check to see how people actually do live in this world. The impact we have in these kids’ lives, to show our love and concern, when you see it firsthand it makes an impact. It’s a very emotional experience, as well. To get to pack your own box and hand deliver it is a very emotional, awesome experience.” Filling a shoebox requires three simple steps: • select a shoebox – Use a regular-sized shoebox or shoebox-sized plastic box. If wrapping your shoebox, wrap the lid separately; • determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 24, 5-9, or 10-14; • fill your shoebox with school supplies such as pencils, pens, pencil crayons, note pads, and picture books; toys and other gifts such as stuffed animals, small musical instruments, hair clips, toy jewelry, T-shirts, socks, and candy (loose, individually wrapped hard candy in a sealable bag); soap in a sealable bag; and a personal note and/ or a photo (not inside the donation envelope). For those donating shoeboxes full of items, Gustafson stressed that nothing with an expiry date should be included, due to customs restrictions. Hard candy, for example, has to be taken out of its original package and placed in a Ziploc bag. Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls worldwide have received shoeboxes. However, “there’s still lots of room to give kids some hope,” Gustafson said. For more information on how to participate in Operation Christmas Child, people can call Gustafson at 604-467-9794 or visit www.SamaritansPurse. ca/occ.

mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Maria Rantanen/TIMES
Nigel Tucker is organizing a fundraiser for Maple Ridge’s Santa parade.
An evening of fiddling, folk music, and fun is planned for this Friday – all to benefit the upcoming Christmas in the Park and Santa Claus Parade in Maple Ridge. Local musician Nigel Tucker is organizing the musical fundraiser and he will also take to the stage himself with his band, The Navvies. Tucker will be joined on stage by his fellow band members Tam and Shelley Gordy. On stage will be a pair of local fid-
dlers, Emmalene van Meel and Jesse Kazuma, both former members of the North Shore Celtic Ensemble. Also performing will be opera singer Lydia Querengesser. The Christmas festivities in Maple Ridge, always the first Saturday in December – this year on Dec. 7 – are free and include lots of free activities and treats for all ages. And fundraiser like this Friday’s concert help to keep it free, Tucker pointed out. “There are very few free [Christmas events] in North America and we want to keep it that way,” Tucker added. Tucker is the entertainment coordinator for the Maple Ridge Christmas Festival Society, and he is joined on the society’s committee by another 10 members, including representation from parks and leisure
services and the municipality. The fundraiser will be held Friday, Nov. 15 at Burnett Fellowship Church, 20639 123rd Ave., Maple Ridge, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door. Volunteers are still needed on parade day, Dec. 7. To volunteer, email volunteer@mapleridgechristmasfestival.com or go to www.mapleridgechristmasfestival.com. Floats must be registered by Nov. 29 at noon. More information and entry forms are available at the website. The ACT
Gallery assembles art
An annual art show features several pieces by various artists.
Mitch Thompson/TIMES
Market season wraps up Tracy and Carey Carpenter delicately decorated pieces of pottery at the Create Shop booth during the Haney Farmers Market on Saturday. In the meantime, (inset) Karla Ferreira and Odette Castillo of Pinatas Can showed off their Mexican garb at the market. The market, the last of the regular season, had a Mexican Fiesta theme.
Maple Ridge Art Gallery will showcase groups of art pieces at its fourth annual Ensemble exhibit, opening on Saturday. This annual his exhibition is known by local art aficionados for it distinctly loose and eclectic flavour. Although there are strict size restrictions, the submission process is open to artists working in all media, in either two or three dimensions. The one constant feature underpinning the display is that each artist is able to show his or her work in an “ensemble” format, so that the visual statement carried by the artwork is significantly enhanced. Fabric artist Keiko Kiyota has an ensemble of festive birds for the art show. The birds are created from recycled silk kimonos and are meticulously crafted in a traditional Japanese craft called Osaikumono, which dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867).
Although it is not a requirement, most of the work is available for sale, making this event a great opportunity to purchase a unique gift or acquire art for a personal collection. Sales of the artwork benefit both the artist and the Maple Ridge Art Gallery. The gallery shop is also stocking new items for the Christmas season so that shoppers can find attractive gifts from both local and regional artists right here in Maple Ridge. The shop only sells handmade items, and the fact that nothing is mass produced demonstrates a commitment both to superior craftsmanship and sustainability. The Ensemble exhibit will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 20. The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and selected evenings. The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is located at The ACT, 11944 Haney Pl. The opening reception for Ensemble is on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. with the gallery doors opening at 1:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public.

Pitt alumni put hoop skills on display The 2004 and older team captured Pitt Meadows Secondary’s annual grad tournament.
On the Fly
Through heavy pressure, Kevin Wallsfimd, 2004 grad, attempted a lay-up during Saturday’s game between the 2004 graduates and the 2011-2013 graduates at Pitt Meadows Secondary. The two teams were participating in the school’s annual grad tournament, which sees past and present Mauraders play against each other.

Doing it again The inaugural Coronation Business Group Curling Classic at Golden Ears Winter Club in Albion this past weekend was such “an overwhelming success,” according to the club’s general manager Mike Mallett, that plans are in the works to do it again next year. “…it’s safe to say the future of this sport is bright with all the great up-and-coming junior ladies teams we had here all weekend,” Mallett told The TIMES. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Above and inset – Pitt Meadows Secondary gym was bustling with activity this week, as the school once again hosted the traditional Grad Tournament, including play Friday evening with grads from 2005 to 2007 going up against fellow grads from 2008 to 2010. If last weekend’s tournament is any indication, time hasn’t diminished the basketball skills of Pitt Meadows Secondary’s alumni. The school’s annual grad basketball tournament was a big success just as it has been in previous years, according to Shane Kool, one of the event’s organizers who also played for the winning 2004 and older squad. “The player turnout was as large as we expected and we all had a great time seeing each other again and playing in the games,” Kool said. “No injuries were reported which is always the most important thing in the grad tournament.” The 2004 and older graduates and 2008-2010 graduates each went 2-0 in the round robin stage and then met in a rematch of the 2012
final, which was won by according to Shane Kool, “2008-2010 inexplicthe 2004 and older ably assigned 5’7” Wadah Nour to guard group. 6’5” post players.” View The 2004 and Kool believes that this move helped to more older squad was jumpstart the 2004 and older group to photos without their best a big run and an eventual 82-64 victory with player Bryson for their second consecutive tournament Kool for the two championship. or online Saturday games due to illness, so the This year’s members of the chamteam leaned heavily on tournament pionship 2004 and older team included MVP Aaron Christensen in the afternoon Aaron Christensen, Kevin Wallsmith, win over the 2011-2013 grads, and then Mike Vanderwal, Shane Kool, Mark again in the finals. Cocktail Shake Up
Anya Georgijevic
Our favourite wine bar just got a cocktail facelift, and our heads are spinning.
Heather Neill, a Highland dance teacher, and four other local dancers were in Toronto at the end of October for the Scottish Dance Teacher Alliance’s North American conference. The dancers were competing for a Highland dance scholarship. Maple Ridge’s Neill had her picture taken with Samantha Stables of Pitt Meadows, as well as fellow Maple Ridge residents Mika Penner, Emma Anderson, and Avri Penner. They proudly held up a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES, at the Toronto airport, on their way home.
This week’s Times Travellers feature is brought to you by :
Lauren Mote, a familiar face on the city’s mixologist scene and the co-proprietor of the exquisite bitters and extracts line, Bittered Sling, recently joined UVA as the bar manager. Mote’s innovative concoctions include the stiff-but-tasty Liberation ($15), a calvados, campari, and sherry mix that might just make your brain explode a little—in the good way. A refreshing Gin-Gin Donkey ($12) offers a bitter combination of gin, ginger wine, grapefruit, and sage. Chartreuse Milkshake ($12), a gin and chartreuse combo wins extra points for its inclusion of chocolate bits. Uva Wine Bar, 900 Seymour St., Vancouver, 604-632-9560.

The 100-Mile Shawl
Alexandra Suhner Isenberg
Hamideh Abol doesn’t go to fabric fairs or showrooms to buy fabric for her fashion collections; she visits farms, buys raw wool and felts it herself in her Vancouver studio. The result? Beautiful Simork wool shawls that work with winter coats, cosy sweaters, or over pretty cocktail dresses. They are very warm, unique, and definitely our new favourite alternative to fur. She’s also a bit of an artist when it comes to pattern, and her beautiful printed scarves are a great accent to a dark coloured fall wardrobe. Since we’ve not quite managed to achieve the raw, local, handmade, and crueltyfree diet, at least we’ve got a shawl that ticks all the boxes. Scarves from $100 and wool shawls start at $650 at www.shop.hamidehabol.com
