Groups prep floats for Santa parade Saturday’s parade is the result of a year’s worth of planning. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The 1st Haney Scout group has been preparing their float for a year for Saturday’s Santa Claus Parade in Maple Ridge. This is the fourth year the scout group has taken part in the parade, and it’s a way to show Maple Ridge they’re involved in the community, said leader Jason Martin.

Friends and family usually line the streets and clap as they go by, Martin said. “It’s quite cool – the kids are proud they’re in the parade,” he said. They’re not the only ones preparing for the Santa Claus Parade and Christmas in the Park – a committee, headed by Dianne Enns, has been meeting all year to organize the free, family-oriented event. For Enns, watching children’s reactions to the parade is the highlight of the event. “When they see Santa, the whole world is lit up for them,” she said. This year, the parade starts around 6 p.m.

Christmas officially arrives this weekend - Hope to see you there

at Plaza Street, turning east on Dewdney Trunk Road, then south on 224th Street and onto Selkirk Avenue. While the parade is about an hour and a half, 224th Street will be shut down from about 5:30 to 9 p.m. The Christmas in the Park portion of the festivities includes a live nativity play, entertainment and free refreshments. The Christmas event is also a fundraiser for the Friends In Need Food Bank and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society.

Pitt Meadows council started its budget talks on Wednesday, and Maple Ridge council launches into it next week – both with pressure to keep tax increases low. Going through the budget documents, Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters said she can see items that she can live withDeb Walters out, but she Pitt Meadows mayor wants to hear both sides of the argument. A petition with more than 1,400 names was presented to council asking for a zero-percent tax increase. This petition as well as other public input will be part of council’s considerations, Walters said. “We understand people are stretched, but they also want services,” she added. Maple Ridge starts business planning on Monday and will hold a public question-andanswer period from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at municipal hall. Whonnock roofers shop for food bank Whonnock Roofing raided the aisles of Save-On Foods at Valley Fair Mall to shop for the food bank. Co-owners Clay and Abraham Gagnon (below) tallied up the bill after the big shop.

by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Growing up, Clay and Abraham Gagnon learned about giving back to the community from their mom. So eight years ago, when the owners of Whonnock Roofing were trying to think of some way to give back to their community, the Friends In Need Food Bank was the natural charity of choice. “When we were kids, my mom donated to the food bank several times a year – especially at Christmas,” Clay said. On Tuesday morning, Clay and Abraham, along with their families and employees, arrived at Save-On Foods at Valley Fair Mall, donning their Santa hats and Whonnock Roofing hoodies, and set out to shop till they dropped. After pushing eight large bins of food items through the till, though, the brothers looked at the bill and decided to do another round of shopping, bringing the bill up to $6,060. This year, they surpassed the $40,000 mark in their eight years of donating to the Friends In Need Food Bank, Normally, it’s hard to get their kids out of bed for school, but Tuesday morning, when they knew they were doing their annual Christmas shopping for the food bank, there was no

problem getting them up. “They were jumping out of bed,” Clay said. Their kids are also learning about giving back to the community and helping the less fortunate, Clay said. Not only do they take part in the annual food bank shopping spree, they also help out at their church, Burnett Fellowship, making sandwiches for people living in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Clay’s daughter, Isabelle, is especially enthusiastic about

making food for the less fortunate and is always at the church on Saturday night. “She’s running with these sandwiches, all gung-ho,” Clay said. And, at 11, Isabelle would like to help more, but is restricted by her age. “[She] wants to help in the soup kitchen, but she can’t until she’s 12,” Clay said. Whonnock Roofing saves up the money for the food bank Christmas donation all year long in a separate account.

But because the grocery store knows they’re coming, the staff work hard to make sure they get the best deals and this significantly lowers the cost. This year, the Gagnons also bought $500 worth of Share Coupons, which the food bank can then use towards eggs and milk and other perishable items when the need arises.

The education minister was impressed by the innovation taking place in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, but didn’t promise any new funds to alleviate tight budgets. Peter Fassbender, who was elected MLA for SurreyFleetwood, and named minister of education this spring, toured Thomas Haney Secondary on Tuesday after meeting with the local board of education. Board chair Mike Murray said the meeting was “very positive,” and he felt their concerns were heard by Fassbender. However, the minister told them that finances are still “really difficult” at the provincial level, but hopefully they won’t be for long. “What he emphasized was our common goal, which is to provide an education that is relevant for students,” Murray said. Fassbender served as a school trustee for the Langley board of education in the late 1970s and early 80s. He was known then for his platform of getting back to the

On Tuesday, he said he still believes in getting the basics in education while applying these basics to real-life situations. “Fundamental skills of reading, writing, literacy, numeracy are absolutely critical to everyone’s journey,” Fassbender said. “But what I see in this high school is if students have a good, solid foundation, then

they start to spread their wings and explore their passions and visions for the future.” “You don’t have to lose the basics, you just have to apply them in real-life situations,” Fassbender added. The ministry of education

is currently developing a new education plan and new curriculum, and, for Fassbender, the important aspect is compressing the number of things that currently need to be covered by teachers.

Partial remains of a missing Maple Ridge woman have been found near her home in east Maple Ridge, but police don’t suspect foul play. Anita Young’s body was found Friday by a neighbour, but it wasn’t confirmed until Tuesday that it was the woman who went missing on Oct. 5 – just a few weeks before her 44th birthday. Following her disappearance, police and search teams repeatedly combed the area around her home, near McNutt Road north of Dewdney Trunk Road, said RCMP Sgt. Dale Somerville. “Police are now working with the B.C. Coroner’s office to determine a cause of death,” he said. At the time of her disappearance police were concerned about her mental well-being, and this never changed throughout the search for her. While police can not rule out foul play until they have the coroner’s report, they are not treating her death as suspicious, Somerville said.

Our View

Shorten lists to remember There are 14 names that we should all try to remember this week: Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klucznik Widajewicz, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, and Annie Turcotte. There’s another name that we will not deign to mention here – but most people will remember it easily enough. It’s more difficult to bring to mind the names of the victims than to remember those who made them important to remember. As so often is the case, there was only one killer at l’Ecole Polytechnique on Dec. 6, 1989, and there were so very many victims. The 14 names above belong to the young women who died in “the Montreal Masscre.” Because they did not deserve to die, they deserve to be remembered. They deserve to be remembered, just as all the women and girls who die as a result of deliberate acts of gender-based violence in this country and elsewhere every year deserve to be remembered. Astoundingly, in a country as affluent and socially advanced as Canada, more than 60 women are killed by their spousal partners every year – more than one every six days. Men assaulting their partners account for 12 per cent of violent crimes in Canada… and it has been estimated that less than a quarter of such crimes are ever reported to police, so the real percentage is certainly much, much higher. Friday, the 24th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Take the time to remember – and to reflect on what can be done to shorten the lists of victims. – B.G.

Child welfare

B.C. walks away with poverty title

Dear Editor, The Lions didn’t quite make it, the Whitecaps fell short, and it looks like the Canucks’ chances are slim. But our government has ensured that we have regained top spot – in terms of child poverty in Canada. It is shameful that we have a child poverty rate of more than 18 per cent, and that the rate of 21 per cent for children under six years of age is eight percentage points higher than the Canadian average. Equally distressing is the fact that 50 per cent of children living in a single-mother family live below the low-income cutoff used by Statistics Canada. British Columbia has the most unequal distribution of income among rich and poor

families with children. I know the generous folks of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will again respond magnificently to the needs of our neighbours through the Friends In Need Food Letters to Bank and the Christmas hamper the Editor society who do such an awesome job of responding to needs. Each year they see a growing need among children, seniors, and working people. I invite you, as you give to these worthy causes, to call or write your member of Parliament or your MLA, to let them know that this cannot continue, and that you are upset and troubled by the fact that so many children in your community live in poverty. Loving owner might like to know…

Dear Editor, This is just a short note to a cat owner. I thought he or she might want to know. I know I would. I mean this for the person who once owned and loved that beautiful, young tricoloured, long-haired female cat – not a kitten anymore, but still young, with fine features, a gorgeous colour pattern in the face, and a long, bushy tail. Her owner must have moved away from the North Albion area sometime this summer and not found time to look for a new loving home for their cat, or time to bring her to Katie’s Place or the SPCA just down the road, or maybe felt ashamed to do so – which is very unfortunate, as the people there are really nice and understanding. Or maybe they weren’t from the area at all, but thought a cat dropped off near the SPCA or Katie’s Place would find its way to their doors on its own. Or maybe their much-loved kitty got ill – some illness, maybe, that prevents a cat from eating – and they didn’t have the

Clement has no right

Dear Editor, Tony Clement, minister of the Treasury Board seems to feel it is okay to criticize a Mountie for smoking pot. For that Mountie, it is not merely a recreational thing, but for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). How dare he criticize a man who has this dreadful ailment. I, too, have PTSD. I was not diagnosed until 56 years after the fact. The cause can be any number of things. It makes a mess of the head. In my case, it was the hideously burned face of a man who was cooked alive by super-heated steam. I survived a troop train wreck on Nov. 21, 1950. It was something I could never talk about, for it was too painful. My kids knew nothing about it. It happened up near Valemont, a few miles north of Kamloops. There was a memorial cairn built at the site, on Canoe River. In 1991 there was a commemoration for the 17 young men who died that day. I attended. Soon after, I was to find out that not all the bodies were recovered, and I once again felt the survivors’ guilt. There was additional guilt, because I wondered, with men trapped under all that wreckage, perhaps still alive, if we had in effect abandoned them. If Mr. Clement hasn’t walked in their shoes, he has no right to sit in judgment. Robert W. Stirling, Maple Ridge For more letters to the editor visit... www.mrtimes.com – Click on Opinion/Letters.

money for the vet and couldn’t watch her die, so they gave her the freedom of the woods. I went on a walk shortly before lunch, on the trail past the duck pond, and saw that cat sitting on a log by the wayside. I bent down to pet her… my hand touched bone. I picked her up; a hummingbird must have weighed more. She lay quietly in my arms, too weak to lift her head. I gently stroked her matted fur, traced every bone as if there wasn’t even skin to cover them. My finger could have encircled her spine. I took her home, snuggled her into warm towels, drove to our vet to pick up special food and kitten milk. I gingerly fed her 20 millilitres of kitten milk every 40 minutes with a syringe; she had starved too long to know how to eat. She twitched her tail in response, and I imagined I heard a cautious purr. I wished so much to hear a purr. She seemed to be doing all right, as all right as she could do. Mostly sleeping. From time to time she walked around the room. Then she began to wobble, and lost her balance altogether. There was a seizure, some vomiting. She died in my arms at 9 p.m I thought someone might want to know. Brigitta Schneiter, Maple Ridge

The TIMES recently caught up with a few of Boileau Electric’s staff hanging lights on the trees in downtown Maple Ridge, as well as a local woman painting the Fuller Watson windows. Readers weighed in on the decorating efforts. “I am totally impressed with the new Christmas lights down 224th Street between Lougheed and Dewdney. If you haven’t yet make sure you do take a drive or walk down 224th Street. You’ll get that warm fuzzy feeling that it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas.” – Raelene Bauer “Love it! And in the centre of town, the new drip lights on the trees are beautiful. Although some people have said they are distracting. lol.” – Janessa Munz • Catch an interesting story about the changing of the downtown decorations on page A13 of today’s edition.

Thornhill candle studio opens with artisan fair Several artisans are coming together to display their work this weekend. by Maria Rantanen

A new candle studio opens this weekend in Thornhill – and its launch will include an artisan fair featuring local crafts. Betty and Klaus von Hardenberg have been making beeswax candles for several years, and they have built a studio next to their Thornhill home – largely from reclaimed lumber – to house their operation and a studio. They have invited a group of artisans, some Thornhill residents, some former residents, and other from a bit farther away, to help them launch their studio. The group of artisans that the von Hardenbergs invited have a wide variety of talents, ranging from wood turning to knitting fine items. Claudia Hayward, whose pieces are featured through Circle Craft, has been doing woodwork for 35 years, most of that on Thornhill. She quit her job as a wildlife biologist and her husband stopped teaching in the late 1970s, and they began working with wood full-time.

Christmas bells given new life Old moulds for the 1960s decorations have been dusted off. by Eric Zimmer editorial@mrtimes.com

Reindeer kicks into party mode For the sixth holiday season in a row, volunteer drivers will ensure local partiers get home safe. by Eric Zimmer editorial@mrtimes.com

Police and a large reindeer named Rudy are once again combining forces to help holiday revellers get home safe at the end of the night. Operation Red Nose (ORN) is back for its sixth year in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. A road safety campaign against impaired driving, ORN’s main objective is to have a team of volunteers provide free, safe ride home – in their own car – to any motorist who isn’t fit to drive. Using the patron’s own vehicle ensures that their car will make it home with them and they won’t have to go hunting for it the next day, said Linda Palm, ORN manager for Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Abbotsford and Mission. And though the program is free, donations are appreciated, as this is the primary fundraiser for PacificSport Fraser Valley. ORN: 604-515-6673 The ORN donations enable the group to deliver sport programs and services to youth, high-performance athletes, and coaches in the Fraser Valley, Palm explained, who said there’s still a need for more volunteer drivers. “Last year, we had over 100 volunteers, this year, we just registered our 75th,” said Palm, who has been with ORN in Abbotsford and Mission since she started with PacificSport 13 years ago. She began ORN in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows after noticing “a gap in service here.” This past Friday and Saturday marked the first weekend of this season for ORN mascot Rudy and the team. Palm said the first night (Friday) was pretty quiet and featured local celebrities and sponsors partaking in the kickoff. In total, she said, they had “about 15 calls.” Saturday night saw a huge jump in rides with 60 calls over the course of the night. Last year, the total number of calls over the course of the season was 502. There are eight nights left (Dec. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 and 31) for ORN service in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and anyone planning to party is encouraged to call 604515-6673 between the hours of 9 p.m and 3 a.m. Those wanting more information can check out the

It’s a sure sign of the season. Throughout downtown Maple Ridge, bright, festive lights and bells adorn city streets and give a holiday glow to the community. The project is overseen by David Boag, parks and facilities director. Calling on their inhouse electrician and the staff at Boileau Electric, the District’s electrical contractor, Boag said the display typically takes a couple weeks to completely put up. “The District’s electrician assists the contractor to put up the decorations,” Boag explained. “We also have two parks staff who installed the lights on the tree trunks.” Grant Coghill, of Boileau, said the display design is drawn up by the municipality and doesn’t change too much from year to year. “We’ve been doing this with them for probably 15 to 20 years,” he said. Boag said the display, which is now complete for this year, features a couple of notable changes,

does not come from taxpayers pockets though. “The funds for the lights are funds that the [District] takes in as revenue from the gaming centre here in town,” he said. The display this year also features a renewed community favourite: the bells. At one point, it looked

like the bells that had been part of the display since 1960 would not be a part of this year’s show. They were becoming brittle and their use was in question, according to Boag. “However, through public consultation, we found that the bells were actually a community favourite,” he said. As luck would have it, some old bell moulds were found in the District’s worksyard. They were then sent to a company in Port Coquitlam that made new bells out of the old moulds. This means that the brand-new bells look like the ones that have always been there, Boag said. As an added bonus, the company offered to safely store the moulds. The cherry on top came when the company reached a deal with the District to make and sell moulds to other communities and pay royalties to Maple Ridge from each bell sale. Locals don’t have to worry about seeing copycat designs too close to home, though. “As part of the deal, the company agreed not to sell the lights to any community within 200 kilometres of Maple Ridge,” Boag said. The entire display is up from now until midJanuary.

Flora and fauna

Mushroom and fungi population growing steadily

A

s the year once again begins to come to a close and the gold and red leaves of the trees finally flutter to the ground to be swept up for the compost, I have seen many more different fungi in the areas of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and around the river banks than ever before. Their beautiful shades and shapes are a delight, but don’t be fooled, many of them are dangerous to the touch. Mushrooms and fungi are members of a family of living organisms, and lacking chlorophyll they obtain their food by absorption from surrounding medium. Each year, the fairy rings expand looking for new nutrients, travelling by threads or fila-

ments under the ground. The showy fly agaric has many shades of colour from red, orange to brown and white. They are large with small nodules across the cap. They grow under pine and deciduous trees and are very poisonous. It has hallucinogenic properties, and although there have been no recorded deaths from this mushroom, it is unwise to eat it and best to wash your hands after touching it. The delicate fairy helmets range from brown to lilac in shade and grow in wonderful fairy rings across the lawn or on damp stream banks. They have slender stalks and small “helmet” shaped tops and are not edible. They’re often featured in children’s book illus-

trations where fairies are the subject. Ink caps and shaggy manes are strange looking. With tall conicalshaped tops covered in shaggy tufts, they disintegrate into a messy ink-like fluid on maturity and like open wet grassland. There have been several clusters around where I live and the small rodents like to nibble at

their edges giving them a tattered appearance. This year, I have found some common cavaliers, a small neat mushroom that has a slight depression in its cap. They are coloured golden yellow with fragile stalks. There has also been the wonderful morels, which are prized by wild crafters who keep the places where they grow secret as they fetch a high price commercially. Finally, there are the large fungi that attach themselves to the sides of trees, such as the turkey tail or hen of the woods, which is edible. If you look up, you can often see them clinging to the sides of dead tree trunks. The turkey tail has multi-coloured stripes around its edge and the hen of the woods’ crumpled

white-gray folds look like a ruffle. They grow on hardwood trees and occasionally on conifers. There are many more wonderful fungi to discover here in the Lower Mainland, but as always I caution if you go wild crafting, go with someone who knows about mushrooms as there are many deadly ones that look just like their cousins – the edible ones. And remember to always leave some for the animals.

Charity

School inspires 12 days of giving challenge

A Maple Ridge mom is trying to help less fortunate in the community she calls home. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge resident Jennie Saranchuk knows what it’s like to go without. A stay-at-home mom to fiveyear-old Kylie and three-year-old Ethan, Saranchuk is doing what she can to help needy families during the holiday season. In that vein, she came up with an idea which she believes “will inspire people to take action and to give back in their community this Christmas season.” To help the less fortunate, Saranchuk has created the 12 Days of Christmas Giving Challenge, where items are collected and then distributed to charities (locally, it’s the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society). The charity effort follows the theme of the 12 Days of Christmas song and began Nov. 25 and runs until Friday, Dec. 6. Saranchuk’s daughter’s school is on board. Kylie started kindergarten at Glenwood Elementary this past September and Saranchuk quickly came to realize that the school was very diverse, with a high percentage of students from low-income families. The school community reminded Saranchuk of the places where she grew up. “I, too, was… raised by a single mother, who didn’t have very much and was no stranger to second-hand and breakfast programs,” Saranchuk said. One of her most memorable Christmases dates back to childhood. A neighbour gave her mom all of the Barbie dolls that his kids had outgrown. “She washed them up and we had the most amazing Christmas that year,” Saranchuk shared. “We had no knowledge that

Troy Landreville/TIMES

I needed to do something – to step up for this school, just as that thoughtful neighbour had for my mom so many years ago,” she said. Saranchuk started thinking of ways her family could help, and ways that her extended family could pitch in. As an idea took shape Saranchuk realized she could take this further than her family; she could take it right back into the school that had sparked these overwhelming feelings of change – the place that motivated her. “I also wanted to take this as a teaching opportunity for my children, to learn early on that giving

A sample 12 days of giving challenge:

• 12 non-perishable food bank items (watch expiry date); • 11 pairs of socks/slippers; • 10 Basics for Babies items; • nine pairs of gloves/mittens; • eight toiletry items (new only) such as toothbrushes, soap, and shampoo; • seven toques/hats; • six articles of clothing/pairs of pyjamas; • five sweaters; • four pairs of boots or other type of footwear; • three jackets/blankets; • two new unwrapped toys for the Christmas hamper society; and • one life saved: donate blood to the Canadian Blood services.

is so much more then receiving, and that not everyone is as fortunate as we are today,” she told The TIMES. Glenwood, led by its principal, Jovo Bikic, jumped on board and

it is now being set in motion within the PAC and leadership committee. The school has always been successful with its coin, food, and toy drives during past Christmases, and works very closely with the local Christmas hamper society. “I think it’s fantastic because it allows families in our building to be helping [other] families in our building, and in our community,” Bikic said. “The theme is brand-new and it gives us a whole new sense of energy around it [helping the Christmas hamper society].” Saranchuk discovered that 40 families at Glenwood are signed up for assistance from the hamper society, and 100 per cent of the food being collected in the challenge will go right back into the school to help those families. “So we simply took the idea I had and adapted it for

Glenwood,” Saranchuk said. “It gives the kids an exciting theme to motivate them in a new way this Christmas.” Saranchuk has created a Facebook page (www.facebook. com/12daysofchristmasgiving). The page has been up for a month and “everyone seems very motivated to give,” she said. The “12 Days” idea has been tweaked for the students at Glenwood, with their challenge running Dec. 2 to 17. “That is the brilliant part of this idea, is that it can be taken and changed in so many ways,” Saranchuk said. “People can add things to the list that benefit charities or organizations that they are passionate about. This idea can benefit children as well as adults.” Saranchuk wanted part of the initiative to be something huge, something life changing. So she came up with the idea that there is nothing greater than saving a life. She is challenging people to donate blood. Saranchuk contacted Canadian Blood Services and coordinated a donor day with them on Dec. 20 at Alliance Church, 20399 Dewdney Trunk Rd. “They have named Glenwood Elementary as their Miracle Donors for that day,” Saranchuk said. “A huge honour. Obviously children cannot donate blood, but the parents as well as the staff of Glenwood can.” In some people’s eyes this seems like quite a list to accomplish, Saranchuk continued. “I’m challenging people to take it on, but they don’t have to do it alone. Ask friends and family to work with them to collect all these items and work together to get these things into the right hands this holiday season.” The school has a special collection box set up at its Christmas concert on Dec. 19. Items from Glenwood will be dropped off to the hamper society the first two Fridays in December and then following the concert.

For just $5, attendees receive a pancake breakfast, a photo with Santa, and the opportunity to partake in activities like crafts and facepainting The event is spearheaded each year by Leah Schofield and her six kids – who now range in age from 13 to 21. However, it takes an army of “around 100 people to actually pull the event off,” Schofield said. She said it was after she took her daughter, at age three, to her first

Breakfast with Santa that she was inspired to get involved. According to Carissa Kennedy, an events organizer with the church, this breakfast was created for the community, to provide great value for those who “can’t usually afford to go to all of the big expensive Christmas events,” she said. She called it a big fundraiser for a good cause. “Because of the generous donations of our guests, we have been able to give hundreds of items to the food bank,” Kennedy said. With more than 700 people already registered for this year’s event, Kennedy said space – if there is any left – is limited. The breakfast begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 11 a.m., at Thomas Haney Secondary, 23000 116th Ave. Anyone wishing to find out more about the event or inquire about registering can visit www.nrchurch.ca.

Avery and Ryleigh Meredith had their picture taken with Santa at last year’s NorthRidge Church breakfast.

setting since they realized that they could possibly go to the BC Games. Hopefully that work ethic will carry them on to bigger competitions, like Canada Games and who knows what else?” Running simultaneously with the provincial Games is a winter event of a much larger scope. The Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia is Feb. 7-23. 2014. Each Olympic year has a positive impact on local speedskating registration, Donatelli Green said. “The Ridge Meadows club is at the largest it has ever been and I think that’s due in part to the 2010 Olympic Games [held in Vancouver and Whistler],” she said. “The more people see the sport on TV and realize that there are clubs here in the Lower Mainland where they can participate, the bigger the sport gets.” Closer to home, Donatelli Green continues to focus her efforts on promoting the BC Games in Mission, Feb. 20 to 23. Competition will also be held at venues in Maple Ridge, Langley, and Abbotsford, with skiing at Whistler and Hemlock mountains.
