Ian Kerr, who turns five on Friday, decided this year to collect money at his birthday party – instead of getting presents – to help make Christmas merrier for another family. He chose an angel from the Angel Tree at Vancity in Maple Ridge and he and his family bought the Christmas wishes listed on the back. Twenty-eight families, with 59 children in total, were helped by the program in Maple Ridge this year. Proceeds from a year-round book sale in the credit union also go to the Angel Tree program.

Tasty thanks heaped on ICU staff A pair of transplant recipients delivered popcorn and heartfelt gratitude to the Ridge Meadows Hospital’s intensive care unit. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

A visit to Ridge Meadows Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) was an emotional one for Linda Mawhinney. It was in the hospital’s ICU where Mawhinney received a life-saving liver transplant in 2007. Last Thursday, Dec. 5 she returned along with heart transplant recipient Cam Shuttleworth to show appreciation for what the staff at RMH’s ICU does to help save lives. Last week, transplant recipients – the people most grateful for the gift of life – dropped off festive tins of popcorn to hospital staff throughout the Lower Mainland who make organ transplants happen. “Without people like you, people like me wouldn’t be here,” Mawhinney told patient care coordinator Elaine McNicol. Mawhinney shared that she was “very near death” at the time of the transplant. She was in a semi coma and had been in hospital care for a month. “It saved my life, undoubtedly,” she said. “My poor liver was doing its best but the auto immunity was raging… and here I am.” During Operation Popcorn week, transplant recipients dropped off the tasty snacks to staff in ICUs, emergency departments, and operating rooms across the province. A visit from the Operation Popcorn team allows staff to see the people whose lives are saved through organ donation. BC Transplant’s Operation Popcorn teams delivered 97 tins to staff in 27 hospitals throughout B.C., and one in the Yukon. So far in 2013, 304 transplants have been performed in B.C. This is the 22nd year that Operation Popcorn volunteers have been saying “thank you” to hospital staff. This year saw 107 volunteers including recipients, living donors, and family members of donors take part. For Shuttleworth and Mawhinney, their gratitude comes in two parts: to the staff who performed the transplant and cared for them before and after the procedure, and to the

Liver transplant recipient Linda Mawhinney hugged and visited with Elaine McNicol, patient care coordinator at the Ridge Meadows Hospital intensive care unit. Mawhinney received her life-saving transplant at the RMH ICU in 2007. She returned to the local hospital on Thursday, Dec. 5 to deliver tins of popcorn to staff as part of BC Transplant’s Operation Popcorn program. Ridge Meadows Hospital staff members (left) were appreciative after Mawhinney (blue scarf) and fellow organ transplant recipients Cam Shuttleworth (black jacket, red scarf) delivered the tins of popcorn and heaps of thanks. donors who made it happen. “It saves a lot of lives,” Shuttleworth said, regarding organ donation. “A lot more than people know.” Mawhinney opined that Canada should legislate an optout system for organ donation. “So everybody is an organ donor, unless they go to the trouble of specifically saying don’t [put me on a donor list],” she said. “It’s that way in Singapore. The entire population, unless they opt out, are listed as organ donors.” Thanks to her donor, Mawhinney has a new lease on life. “I call this gravy,” she said.

at Port Haney station Sunday at 8:45 p.m.

“They say I’m seven years old.” Shuttleworth said he was “very sick before but didn’t know it” prior to when he suffered a massive heart attack in 2011. He had an LVAD – a ventricular assist device that creates blood flow – implanted into his heart. “It’s a bridge to [a] transplant so they could take some time,” he said. Shuttleworth was put on a transplant list and after a sixmonths wait, found out he had a donor. “It comes out of nowhere,” he said, speaking about his transplant. “You want it, you want, you want it, and [when] it hap-

pens it’s like, ‘Holy crap.’ It’s kinda scary going in [to the operation]. You don’t know if it [the heart] is going to work.” In Mawhinney’s case, she didn’t know she was about to receive a transplant because she coming out of a coma. “I was foggy when they put me in the OR [operating room],” she said. “Then the doctor who was going to perform the procedure came into the room.” She said to the doctor, “‘Oh, it’s you. Is this it?” He answered, “This is it.” Then she said, “Get on with it.” “That’s the last thing I remember,” Mawhinney recalled.

Story and photos by Eric Zimmer editorial@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows had its first real visit from Old Man Winter early this week, but according to the forecasters it’s not expected to last. Snow caused slower morning commutes and side streets were a little slippery for both pedestrians and cars early in the week. Immediately after the snow started falling Monday, Maple Ridge’s assistant fire chief Timo Juurakko said crews responded to seven calls between 8:30 and 11 a.m. But since then, weather-related fender-bender accidents subsided to a slower but steady stream of calls for aid. Things were a little quieter in Pitt Meadows, said assistant fire chief Brad Perrie. “We only had a couple callouts,” he said. The snow wasn’t a burden on everyone though. Marlys Nelson was out salting the sidewalk in front of Fraserview Village, across from Brickwood Park Monday afternoon and said she “loves the snow.” Even though the tobogganing

hill at Brickwood was empty at the time, Nelson – who has lived in the complex for seven years – said that when the snow starts to really fall, the crowds come out in droves. “Oh my gosh, yes,” Nelson said. “Everybody uses that park so much, especially the kids. It’s neat to see them and they have a great time here.” As strata manager for The Willows, a housing complex inside Fraserview, Nelson recognized the importance of keeping the sidewalks clear. “We’re all basically 55 and [older] around here and I really try to have our place maintained – make sure the sidewalks are

Hoots and hollers could be heard from children welcoming the snow with open arms. Unfortunately, their glee was forecast to be short lived. Pot petition falls short

In the two local ridings, 5,400 people signed on to ask the province for a referendum on marijuana. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Craig Speirs was surprised at all the “haters” who surfaced and challenged him while he was collecting names on a petition asking for a referendum on marijuana. While the petition failed to get enough signatures to force a referendum – officially it was announced on Monday by Elections BC – Speirs said organizers are ready to go again. The former Maple Ridge councillor led the Sensible BC campaign in the two local provincial ridings, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge-Mission. Sensible BC needed to collect signatures from 10 per cent of voters in each of the 85 ridings in the province. The petition would have asked the provincial government to hold a referendum to decriminalize the use of marijuana. According to Speirs, the canvassers collected more than 200,000 signatures throughout the province, which was twothirds of what they needed. In the riding of Maple Ridge-Mission, they collected eight per cent, and in the riding of Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, they

collected seven per cent. All together, there were 5,400 signatures collected in the two ridings by 75 canvassers. Speirs and the canvassers were outside at a table at Memorial Peace Park collecting signatures, and later in the campaign, they went door knocking. While there were a lot of supporters of asking for the referendum, there were also detractors. “Along the way we met lots of people that were very grateful that we were fighting this fight for them but we also met some very fearful and angry people,” Speirs said. “We were accused of being a bunch of “We were accused drug addicts, pot heads, and crimof being a bunch inals who just of drug addicts, want to get their children hooked pot heads, and on drugs.” criminals...” But, Speirs said Craig Speirs the canvassers were “law-abiding citizens,” who wanted to control, regulate, and educate people about cannabis so that it can be kept away from children. Speirs also said some people didn’t sign the petition because they worried their employer or the government would find out. This petition was to ask the province to hold a referendum on decriminalizing marijuana, but Speirs said the end goal has always been legalization and normalization of marijuana. “Anyone who can grow this plant should be allowed to,” he said.

Dear Editor,

Each winter, volunteers in communities throughout British Columbia activate a network of temporary emergency winter shelters to make sure that everyone has warm, safe shelter when cold weather threatens the health and safety of people who are homeless. The province has allocated $1.5 million in funding to have these spaces available when our weather is at its worst. It is community volunteers who ensure they are open, and people have a warm, safe place to stay. These shelters are an invaluable service, providing more than 21,000 bed nights last winter. Over the past week, cold winter conditions throughout the province have kept these shelters open every night in a number of communities. This is an act that would not be possible without these dedicated volunteers, who open the doors, lay out mats and blankets, and prepare a hot pot of coffee to chase away the cold. Their warmth and kindness does more than provide a bed, it creates hope in a place where it can be all too easily extinguished. As the minister responsible for housing, I know there are stories like this happening each day, each hour, in communities both large and small. I am grateful for the commitment of agencies and individuals who care so deeply for their neighbours, for people who are often invisible on our streets. I am honoured to work with them in our collective efforts to end homelessness. To these volunteers, and to everyone who gives to those in need, I want to express my gratitude and my thanks. Your efforts make a difference to the lives of so many and help create better communities for all of us. Rich Coleman, Minister Responsible for Housing

Health care

Hospital visit wonderful overall Dear Editor, I was recently admitted into the Ridge Meadows Hospital for a kidney infection, and would like to report my experience from walking into the emergency

room till I was dismissed. The reception in emergency was excellent, they admitted me quickly, and within a short while, I was attended to by a doctor. They called in a

Community business

Great buys locally

Dear Editor, Buying products and services from locally owned businesses creates a Letters to huge economic impact on our comthe Editor munity. Small businesses employ more than one million people in B.C., and provide about 55 per cent of all private-sector jobs province-wide. Supporting small business keeps both money and jobs in B.C. All of our local businesses contribute to our community’s diversity. From artisan meat and cheese shops to specialty clothing to tea shops and bookstores, our community has a rich variety of stores – something for everyone. Last week was Buy Local Week in B.C. I encourage you to continue to help grow our local economy by purchasing from our local businesses here in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Dr. Doug Bing, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows

Medicine prices bumped up

Dear Editor, Recently, my doctor put me on an 81mg aspirin every day. I went to the store and was surprised to have to pay over $15 for a bottle. I’m sure this is a rip-off. In B.C. we pay more for everything, because we don’t complain. Maybe if we did once in a while, they would lower the prices. Fifteen dollars for aspirin is crazy. They put up the price because a doctor ordered a patient to take it. Ken Bampton, Maple Ridge

general surgeon, as they and I thought I might have appendicitis. I had a scan within a short while, to find it was not my appendix but a severe infection in my kidney. I was then admitted to a ward and was treated exceptionally well by all staff who attended to me. They were all helpful and pleasant, and seemed to enjoy their work. I was there for five days and must say that the food I was given was first class. There were two people in particular I would like to commend on their care and concern for all their patients. A young male trainee nurse spent time chatting to me during the morning, then I was allowed to go home for three hours but had to return for more treatment, and when I returned he had made my bed perfectly and left a note on my bed, thanking me for chatting with him during the morning. Then on the first night, a young nurse learned that I like a cup of tea and a snack before I turn in to sleep, and from then on till I left the hospital, she automatically brought me tea and a snack each night, without asking. That, to me, was fantastic: overall, a wonderful experience. Kelvin Chiddick, Maple Ridge

Genetically Modified Foods

Lack of controls important concern Dear Editor, I recently attended a scientific lecture about GMOs in order to better understand farmers’ concerns. It was at the Langley Municipal Hall on Nov. 22, and featured Dr. Shiva Chopra, formerly from Health Canada, for 35 years in the federal government. Also speaking (now retired) was Dr. Thierry Vrain, a geneticist with Agriculture Canada for 30 years.

What you’re telling us on Facebook

A bike-riding Grinch stole a Christmas tree from the 1st Haney Scouts tree lot last week, a few readers are hoping he gets a lump of coal in his stocking. “I’d like to bury him in coal!” – Sharon Rooney “Welcome to the hood… full of crackheads/dealers in the area. Bikes are their means of transportation around here.” – Richard Shupac “When is Maple Ridge gonna address this problem. We’ve already seen where people have responded by trying to run these bike thieves over with their cars, time for our elected officials to act.” – Cameron Bohnet

This was one day after your editorial appeared [Genetics on civilized base, Nov. 21 Opinion, TIMES], in which you noted, “GMOs need national controls – not blind fear.” I learned front-line companies are not being forthright about the shortcomings of their GMO technologies. And furthermore, the federal government is secretive about their research data – not reassuring! The insertion of foreign genes, traces of Roundup herbicides, and antibiotics have made crops mostly weed- and bug-free. But both are becoming resistant to herbicides and pesticides after 12 years of GMOs, and the weeds and pests are bigger and stronger than ever. Now what? And what of soil and water contamination? The end products are consumed by our children, who are showing symptoms of autism, celiac, and gluten allergies, to name a few, with a real connection to processed foods. What food is safe, and are the drug companies and the government worried about their world reputation for exporting food products? At present, apparently 80 per cent of all antibiotics are used up in agriculture. Farmers’ concerns fall on deaf ears, as patents on new GMOs are supported through the legal system. The public is becoming informed about the lack of national controls of which you speak. On Sunday night, everyone is invited to a Christmas party at the Port Haney West Coast Express Station – bringing along a donation to the Friends In Need Food Bank. The CP Holiday Train will arrive around 8:45 p.m. with Santa Claus and performers on board, but the party starts before that with refreshments and carolling. Last year, those who came out to see the CP Holiday Train brought with them more than 2,500 pounds of food. The

annual event helps stock the shelves at the food bank, and this event combined with others throughout the Christmas season bring in enough food to last three to four months, said the food bank’s operations manager Chuck Griffith. This year, Griffith said he hopes people bring canned vegetables and tomatoes, Chunky Soup, pork and beans, and other quick meals. Also, instant oatmeal and fruit cups are great for kids who need to feed themselves while parents are out working, Griffith said. “For us, kids are number one – that’s why I do this job,” he added. People can also bring cash or cheques for the food bank operations to the CP Holiday Train on Dec. 15.

Concert rekindles childhood memories Here and There

T

by Alan Woodland

his year is the 20th anniversary of Winter Harp, the successful Christmas program of words and music that will be at The ACT on Dec. 22. It had its beginnings here in Maple Ridge, when harpist Lori Pappajohn and I performed together at West Acres, the home of Josine Eikelenboom and the Candlelight Concert Series. I was thinking about this when I found myself humming the tune of my old school song. The school had been established a good many years ago and the song was about those who had come before and the respect we owed to them. I hadn’t thought much about it since I last stood among the senior boys at assembly and sang the familiar rousing words about the heroes of the past. Though we boys didn’t always give the song the serious attention it deserved, it did remind us that our school and the building we were in had a long, proud history. The framed lists on the wall told of the achievements of former stu-

dents who had done well in sports, the military and government. Edward Heath, musician and prime minister of the United Kingdom, was one of them. Were my teachers still alive, they would be surprised to know of my reverence for history and heritage and my continuing interest in the words and deeds of those who laid the foundations of the modern world we live in. In my early years in Canada, I missed my connection to the past. My own family had lived in the same area of southeast England for at least 700 years. I could go into a 350-year-old pub in the town and stand with a pint in my hand on the same spot my grandfather and his grandfather and his grandfather before him would have stood after a hot, tiring day with the animals or among the fields of wheat and barley. In the library, where I worked, there were glass cases filled with Roman domestic pottery from the 1,600-year-old camp just up the road. But after a while, I began to learn about the people who were here at the time the Romans arrived in Britain, and it wasn’t long before I felt a kinship with them. I knew I couldn’t be connected to them the way I was to the people who had passed their line down to me, but I had a sense of them in the forest, by the river, along the coast, on the water. This feeling came to the surface one Christmas when I was writing poems and stories for Winter Harp.

Darkness of winter

It rained at Christmas and we stayed close to fire side and tree We ate well drank smoky glasses of liqueurs and silken sherry gave, received, wrapped and unwrapped and the pile of nutshells rose beside the hearth I went out among the last of the seasons leaves and a single eagle, great wings dark against the silver edges of the clouds flew low over our house climbed on the wind up the overhanging mountain of the sky and was gone In the moist stillness I was one among early people gathered together in the close darkness of winter calling upon the wisest of their band to chant a legend of a great bird power which if properly invoked would carry off the darkness and bring back the sun

There will be two performances of Winter Harp at The ACT on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets and information at 604-476-2787 or www.theactmapleridge.org.

Good triumphs in exotic tale SPECC-tacular Productions presents its annual Christmas show at The ACT.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

It’s a fairy tale with a twist – a local musical theatre group is staging the classic exotic tale of Aladdin. With special effects and colourful sets and costumes, SPECC-tacular Productions Theatre Group, augmented with performers from Maple Ridge Dance Circle, brings its annual pantomime to The ACT, opening this Friday evening and running till next week. The audience is not expected to sit quietly on the sidelines during this family show, said producer Christine Olorenshaw. “We expect audience participation where everyone is allowed to boo and hiss the evil and applaud the good,” she said. “A typical pantomime is a twist on a fairy tale and a battle between good and evil, where the good always wins (with the help of the audience).” The title character, Aladdin, is played by Trevor Gysbertsen, who has been working backstage at SPECC-tacular for a few shows. But his talent was too good to keep off the stage, and this time he takes centre stage. “We discovered he had a great voice and a stage personality, so we convinced him to audition for Aladdin... The audience will fall in love with him,” said Olorenshaw. Narisa Vence Windover plays Princess Sushi and Stephen Bradley plays the hilarious Widow Twanky, Aladdin’s mother. Aladdin is directed by Su Wolfe, and Ed Marshall is the artistic director and in charge of special effects. The special effects for the show include a flying carpet and some
