Fire in empty home sparks more worry Officials are growing concerned by the number of blazes in vacant Ridge houses. by Eric Zimmer An early morning house fire broke out in Maple Ridge on Wednesday. The house, located in the 22400 block of 122nd Avenue was one of four abandoned homes on the block, deputy fire chief Howard Exner explained. The 9-1-1 call came in just before 8 a.m. “The cause of the fire is undetermined at this point,” he told The TIMES on Wednesday morning. “The fire looks to have started inside of the house near the centre of the building. But right now, we’re still actively fighting this fire, and we really don’t know yet – until we get inside and start an investigation.” The fact that the home isn’t the first abandoned house to go up in smoke recently has fire officials concerned. There have been a series of suspicious blazes in downtown Maple Ridge during the past year. “There’s certainly something that’s not right,” said Exner who described the blaze as “quite stubborn.” Flames spread into the attic space, making it difficult for firefighters to get it under control. • More at www.mrtimes.com, search “Exner”

Labour strife propels teachers into strike vote A ruling Wednesday means classes won’t be disrupted in the middle of the school year. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The local teachers’ union president said Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows teachers are “extremely frustrated” – and they will vote next week on whether to strike. The BC Teachers Federation and the provincial government have been negotiating a contract for about a year, and the teachers have not had a contract since last June. George Serra, president of the Maple Ridge

Teachers’ Association, said the government is not acknowledging a recent court ruling at the bargaining table that ruled class size and composition issues need to reinstated to 2002 levels. “It’s reached a point where additional pressure needs to be put on the [bargaining] table,” Serra said. In the meantime, a ruling came down on Wednesday that schools won’t have to reconfigure classes in the middle of the current year – something the local school district estimated would cost about $5.48 million. Rather, that decision is stayed until an appeal of the January court ruling is heard. The items that can be negotiated locally have been settled, Serra explained, but these are not

the “meatier” issues that are negotiated provincially, adding there has been no movement at the provincial bargaining table on significant items. “Local teachers are extremely frustrated,” Serra said, adding that “there’s never an appetite to go on strike... that’s a very difficult thing for teachers to do.” The Minister of Education, Peter Fassbender, called the union’s move “very provocative.” “I’m disappointed... because I have constantly said our goal as government is to stay at the table to find a negotiated settlement,” Fassbender said in a media scrum in Victoria on Tuesday.

Five years ago next week, Wes Foulds went missing, leaving his family with more questions than answers. Accepting that the long-time Maple Ridge resident is likely dead, his mother, sister, and niece are still looking for resolution and holding a candlelight vigil this weekend in hopes of keeping alive Foulds’ case and the disappearances of other Lower Mainland men. Foulds would have turned 57 at the beginning of this month. But instead, he vanished on March 4, 2009 with no traces that he simply bolted, no indications he committed suicide, and no evidence of foul play, said Foulds’ youngest sister Jamie Weinberger, a Port Coquitlam resident spearheading the vigil. The people he loved insisted Foulds’ disappearance was “hugely out of character,” including his niece Sarah Foulds, of Maple Ridge, who said she’s baffled and not willing to believe he could walk away from a life he so adamantly enjoyed. While Foulds grew up in Port Coquitlam, and lived in Maple Ridge for more than a dozen years, he had moved to Abbotsford about two years before he went missing. Consequently, the investigation into his disappearance has involved police from several jurisdictions. It began when Foulds didn’t show up for a doctor’s appointment in Burnaby or his job as a care aide in Whonnock on March 4. Warning bells went off. His concerned common-law wife approached police to report him missing. While she was told it was too early to open a police file, his disappearance escalated to a missing case when BC Hydro crews notified Mission RCMP that a 2007 red Dodge Ram crew cab pickup had been found abandoned in a small parking lot east of the Stave Lake dam, at the head of the reservoir trail the

He was spotted driving his truck along Lougheed Highway – between Mission and Whonnock – with an unknown male in the passenger’s seat, his sister elaborated. “They remembered because, number one, the blue recycle bag covering the broken tail light and two, he was driving under the speed limit and they can remember getting very mad,” Weinberger said, anxious to see her brother’s case re-ignited. It’s little things like this, she added, that might not have seemed significant at the time, but that could help find Foulds and resolve the mystery of his disappearance. “We’re hoping to spark someone’s memory. Anything could possibly help,” his sister said. Motivation to hold this weekend’s vigil is to shine a light on her uncle’s case, but also other unresolved missing files, said Sarah. “There are so many missing persons who have not been Roxanne Hooper/TIMES found and the public forgets Sister Jamie Weinberger and niece Sarah Foulds are organizing a candlelight vigil to mark about them,” Weinberger added, noting the same year that 10 the five-year anniversary of Wesley Foulds’ March 4, 2009 disappearance. other men went missing in B.C., next morning. Festivals

Lanterns light up winter

Super Saturday

Haney Place Mall hosts a festival this Friday afternoon. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The Lantern Festival continues on in Maple Ridge as a legacy of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The annual festival takes place at Haney Place Mall this Friday afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m. The Spirit of B.C. legacy festival has morphed into a multicultural festival and promises a lineup of entertainment representing cultures from around the world. Performing this year are the Stave Falls Scottish Dancers, Polynesian dancers, Hawaiian dancers, Philippino dancers, First Nations storyteller Lorre Gibson, Hmong dancers, and Nigel Tucker and friends with music from the British Isles. Boris Sichon will be at the festival once again with his instruments from around the world. This is always a popular part of the festival, said Ineke Boekhorst, executive director of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association, adding that Sichon presents his instruments all around the world. Capping off the entertainment at 7 p.m. will be Chinese lion dancers. At 7:30 p.m., everyone can join in the lantern parade that will go around the mall. The downtown BIA has been involved in organizing the festival over the years, and Boekhorst likes the way it brings families together. “It’s been a really, really great winter festival,” she said. “There aren’t that many winter festivals.” Throughout the festival, “kids of all ages” – children and families alike – are invited to make lanterns that they can

A poetry contest is part of the festival and it has drawn in 31 entries. There are two categories, junior for children 16 and younger, and senior, older than 16. Boekhorst said she is so impressed with the quality of poems submitted. They will be compiled into a booklet and sold later at Black Bond Books.

On March 4, a forum will be held to discuss serious addictions. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

An adult education class wants a discussion about the controversy of providing heroin addicts with the substance they are addicted to. Dale Hardy’s Social Justice 12 class from the fall term started organizing a forum based around the film Anyone for Coffee and Heroin? The film, made in Denmark, is about how that country has applied lessons learned in Vancouver around prescribing heroin to addicts. Joanna Stierle is one of those helping organize the event on March 4 at 1 p.m. at Riverside Centre. Before she took the class, she had a very different perspective of drug addicts. “I honestly thought they were a bum,” she said. That changed as the class progressed, and they visited the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver and met with agencies working to help the addicted. She started to realize

The focus of the panel will be the heroin controversy between Health Canada and the federal government.

In addition to the film, there will be a panel discussion with representatives from the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users, Pivot Legal Society, and Salome, a heroin drug trial program. Our View

Take kids out of negotiation “Oh, won’t someone think of the children!” That’s all we’re going to hear for the next few weeks, probably months, as the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the provincial government butt heads. Considering how many times the governing Liberals and the teachers have done this over the past 12 years, they must have the cranial strength of bighorn sheep. Here are the issues, as we understand them: the BCTF wants fewer kids per class, and more help for kids with special needs; the government does not wish to pay for that; the courts have said the Liberals are very, very bad, and not only must go back to the old class size rules, but that they deliberately tried to provoke teachers into striking. Both sides are claiming the moral high ground, each insisting that their way is the one that will be best for those precious little tots. Balderdash. To be fair to the government, it has added new programs, like all-day Kindergarten, and graduation rates have been stable or gone up. So clearly, no matter how overworked teachers are, the situation is not one of imminent educational apocalypse. However, the Liberals’ position that hiring more teachers and support staff would be bad is… odd. How, exactly, will having more teachers and SEAs damage the learning environment? Are teacher-librarians secretly eating one in five first graders? Let’s take the kids out of the debate, at least for now. This is a debate about working conditions. The teachers have a stressful and difficult job, the province has a limited budget. The government needs to deal with teachers rationally, before the courts force them. They must give up the idea that teachers are a tether ball. And teachers should accept that blowing a hole in the provincial budget is no way to make friends and influence people. – M.C.

Postal service losing to Bilderberg agenda Dear Editor,

Stephen Harper was invited to the ultrasecret Bilderberg meetings years back, selected by the capitalist rulers of our world to be one of theirs. He is fulfilling the Bilderberg agenda to a tee: cutting back our precious Canadian services, and handing things over to his corporate funders. The latest on the chopping block is our Canadian postal service. People need to realize what is happening. We are being sold off by Harper and his gang in Ottawa to the corporations. Little by little, all that is precious in Canada is being whittled away until, as in

What you’re telling us on Facebook

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district has estimated it will cost $5.48 million to bring staffing levels back to what they were in 2002, if a recent court order stands, that includes hiring 36 full-time teachers at a budgeted $95,000 each. Readers had mixed reactions to this “cost.” “I wonder how many people will think that a starting teacher (that’s who they will need to hire) will make $95,000. Looking at the salary grid you can see a teacher at step 0 Cat 5 would start at $45,909. $50k in other things?” – Cheryl Rogers Baydo “That statement is very misleading! The teachers I know DO NOT make $95k a year, and they pay for all of their own supplies!” – Milena Sesto “ Teachers with masters degrees top out at just above $81,000, and most teachers don’t hold a masters. Even factoring in the district portion of pension and medical/dental couldn’t possibly bring it up to $95,000. Someone needs to explain where their number comes from.” – Meg McCormick

Harper’s own words, “You won’t recognize Canada when I’m through with it.” How true these words are proving! This is not just a bad thing for our postal workers, it is a bad thing for Canada in general, as our services are diminished. It is all part of the grand scheme of Harper and his Bilderberg masters.

No profit in solution Dear Editor,

The relationship between employer and employee is a symbiotic one, but with an imbalance of power held by the originator of the enterprise. Is there a way to thwart the resultant greedy corporation? We could not aid and abet them by working for them or purchasing their products. That is not feasible, due to the devastation to the economy and livelihoods. An affirmative-action solution might be starting one’s own business, employing others, contributing to society, creating wealth, and all the while being a beneficent employer not concerned with profit.

Debt goes wrong way

INTRODUCTORY OFFER

Dear Editor,

Debt-free B.C.? I don’t know. The province was $45 billion in debt when Premier Christy Clark first took over, it’s forecast to be $62 billion as of March 31 this year, and it’s expected to be $69 billion in three years. Of course, that’s just the declared debt, not counting contractual obligations, which bring it closer to $170 billion. I went to public school here in B.C., so my math might be a little off, but isn’t that going the wrong way? Doesn’t debtfree mean owing less?

Gala benefits charities

The South Asian community will once again let Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents get a taste of their culture and, in doing so, raise money for local charities. This Saturday, the Ridge Meadows South Asian Cultural Society holds its seventh annual gala to raise money for Alouette Addictions and the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. The gala usually attracts about 250 or more attendees and over the six past years, it has raised nearly $100,000 for local charities, including Cythera House, the hospital foundation, the hospice society, the Caring Place, and the Family Education and Support Centre. Ed Gurm is in charge of entertainment for the gala and he said there will be a lively lineup of South Asian culture: Punjabi music, Bangra dance, and Bollywood-style entertainment. Gurm has lived in Maple Ridge for the past 43 years where he raised his family and has worked as a realtor for the past 25 years. Now it’s time to give back to the community that supported him and his family. “I strongly believe the community helped me

Where Am ‘i’?

Thanks: you’re winners, and so are we Good news and sad news combined. Like us & win with This is the last of the Where Am ‘i’? Facebook feature. As most in the community know, the ‘i’ from The TIMES sign went “missing” last year. Since last February, we’ve been asking readers each week to tell us where the ‘i’ is, as it bopped around town and had its pictures taken in different locales. Hundreds of people liked us on Facebook and have participated. It’s proven to be such a fun and interactive promotion, that we learned this week it was selected by our industry peers for one of the top three

honours being handed out by the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association. Whatever the outcome of the awards, The TIMES team has been thrilled to bring you this promotion, and thanks all of you who took part. It’s been a blast! So, with the promotion wrapping up, this will be the last photo. Where was this picture taken? Anyone who answers correctly on Facebook before 9 a.m. Monday is still entered in the giveaway. Last week’s picture, taken at the Pitt Meadows Museum, was correctly identified by Jolene Watson, among others. • Stay tuned and learn what The TIMES will do next!

Welcome Back!

Shannon Balla has returned to The TIMES as our new publisher and she wants to hear how our newspaper team can serve the community better.

ne of the most common ducks across the Northern Hemisphere, and one of the most prolific, is the mal-

lard. They seem to be quacking and splashing in every spot where even a hint of water might be. So around here you can see flocks of them dabbling about in the waterlogged fields looking for tidbits. They are quite easy to spot, with the male bird’s shiny green head, buff chest, and blue flashes on his wings. As is often the case in nature, the female duck is not so obvious, being a dull, speckled brown. Although they migrate, many urban birds like to stay around humans all winter. They have become very adept at living with us and small groups of

birds can be seen wading in park ponds, and any water they can find. Often the female will look for a nesting site a long way from water. We have all seen the photos of a Mommy duck leading her chicks across the road, and a roof garden or window box does just as well as a hollow tree or thick grass to hide her babies. This is important because it takes a lot of energy to lay her eggs, and she needs somewhere safe and quiet to rest and forage. Once the female duck has laid her eggs, the male leaves and there is no more contact between the pair. When the baby ducklings hatch, they are led to theirwater source of choice and they never return to the nest. Mallards are omnivorous and enjoy a variety of foods ranging from water snails and crustaceans, to weeds and small fish. They also greedily snap up any bread offered, but it is not wise to let them have too much of that as it holds no nutrients for them. The mallard duck is the ancestor to most of the common domestic ducks around except the muscovy and are referred to as “dabbling ducks, because they dip down just under the surface of the water to

hunt for food. This cheeky bird has been around for many centuries and in Europe and early North America you will find its image in books and paintings, going back to at least the Middle Ages. Unfortunately these gregarious birds have many enemies and are food for coyotes, racoons, hawks, and man. This does not seem to diminish their numbers across the world and they are one of the most successful bird species. But, like most wild things, they rely on clean water for their food. Next time you are along the river bank or walking the dog on the dikes, look out for mallards amongst the several duck species that swim up and down the waterways.

At the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre, they cheered on netball. At the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre, karate took centre stage. And when all was said and done, Zone 3 Fraser Valley stood at the top of the medal count, as the BC Winter Games came to a close on Sunday, Feb. 23. According to the latest numbers on the BC Games results page Sunday evening, the host squad (which encompasses both Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge,) combined to win a total of 103 medals: 30 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze, during the competition which took place from Feb. 21 to 23. Some notable performances included the Fraser Valley curling team, which defeated Cariboo-North East, by a score of 8-1. The Fraser Valley female hockey team scored a 3-2 victory over Fraser River Delta to take gold in the tournament. The victory included a

On the wheelchair basketball front, the Zone 3 team won its gold medal match against Zone 2 Okanagan. And at home in Maple Ridge, Zone 3 nabbed the bronze in netball. Though the games were hosted primarily in Mission, Kelly Mann, BC Games president and CEO, said the importance of satellite venues like Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows shouldn’t be understated, when it comes to successful execution of the Games. “I don’t think there’s a community in B.C. that could host every event within its exact footprint of a municipality,” he said.

He added the fact communities can in essence “borrow” from their neighbours is “part of the allure of the games. “ Christa Balatti, recreation manager, health and wellness, for both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, said both facilities were “thrilled to be asked by Mission to help host the games.” She added that both communities “jumped on the opportunity,” and that they were happy to be able to support the athletes. She added she enjoyed that Maple Ridge had the chance to showcase the somewhat lesserknown sport of netball as well.

Some choices are hard.
