Post office at ‘heart of community’ For residents of Whonnock and the surrounding area, the community’s postal building is more than just a place to get their mail. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
www.mrtimes.com
It’s less than 200 metres from the Lougheed Highway to the entrance of the Whonnock post office. But despite the short distance, a step inside the building is a like a step back through time – a throwback to the days when people spoke to their neighbours and life just seemed simpler. And in the midst of service changes and a nation-wide overhaul by Canada Post, those who call Whonnock home are in no rush to see changes of any kind come to the corporation’s little outlet on River Road. Whonnock, a word that means the “place of the humpback salmon,” has had a postal service since 1885. The building in its current form has housed, sorted, and delivered mail to residents since 1940. And since 1994, all of that work has been done by one person: Postmaster Sue Schulze. A resident of Whonnock since 1981, Schulze is one of the few people in the Lower Mainland who still carries the View title of Postmaster. more But more than that, residents conphotos sider Schulze a thread that binds the with community together. A glimpse into the past
Whonnock has had its own post office for almost 130 years • A post office opened in August 1885 in the Whonnock Store, with the store owner Noble Oliver serving as postmaster until 1890 • Following a fire in March 1916 at the Whonnock Store (it was not rebuilt), a small post office – built by R.S. Whiting – was opened at the current location on River Road. Maple Ridge Museum & Archives While the structure was Assistant postmaster rebuilt in 1928 and again Margaret Milne stood in 1932, the post office has remained on that site in the door of the Whonnock post office ever since. • Besides R.S. Whiting, circa 1920. who served as postmaster from 1907 to 1953, current postmaster Sue Schulze is the longest standing postmaster at Whonnock, having served there since June 1994. • November 2000, a heritage plaque was unveiled

you do.” Schulze, who lives adjacent to the post office, and owns McFli’s Feed store next door as well, said the post office has always been a one-person operation. But that doesn’t translate to a lack of service. “We’re a full post office, just on a smaller scale,” she said. “We do everything that the big ones do, including things like money orders – I can do anything,” Schulze added. The historical Whonnock post office is located at 26915 River Rd. and open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

International Women’s Day will be celebrated in Pitt Meadows by a female business owner and a female author collaborating to create community. This Saturday, from noon to 3 p.m., Roxanne Astles will hold an open house at her yoga studio, Believe Yoga at Meadowvale Shopping Centre, and be hostess to Maple Ridge author Janet Love Morrison who will read from her book Friends: 6 Women, 6 Cultures. Showcasing locals is part of the mandate of her business, Astles explained, and having a female author reading from a book about women friends on International Women’s Day was a no-brainer. “I want to promote local artists, local authors and showcase their talents,” Astles said. Her goal with the yoga studio is to build a community within a community – currently she is displaying artwork by one artist and soon she’ll be displaying handmade scarves. After being open and holding yoga classes for more than a year, she is starting to see friendships build between her clients. “I want people to feel it’s a meeting place,” she said. About three years ago she started doing yoga, and then trained to be an instructor. After that, she realized she wanted to have her own studio. Astles opened her yoga studio about 18 months ago, giving up a steady job at Ridge Meadows Hospital. “I always wanted to have a business, but I didn’t know what kind of business,” she said, until she got into yoga. So she took a “leap of faith” and “the community embraced me,” she said. After working for five years at the hospital, Astles said she likes working with people to help them become healthy so they don’t end up in the hospital. “I like the balance and calmness [yoga] brings to mind... it helps you live for today,” she said. Yoga requires focus – physical and mental focus, with the physical poses requiring

mental focus. “I like that it can take the chaos out of your life,” she said. This is most noticeable in her 4:45 p.m. class when her clients are rushing in from work, racing to get there and get ready for class. But within five minutes, “there’s a completely different energy in the room,” as they relax doing yoga. The comment she hears from some clients as they arrive is “I feel like I’m coming home.” The physical benefits Astles attributes to yoga are good posture, strength, and flexibility. The main focus will be the book reading
by Janet Love Morrison, but Astles will also be running mini yoga classes throughout the open house. The open house runs from noon to 3 p.m. this Saturday, March 8, at Believe Yoga, #109-19070 Lougheed Hwy., Pitt Meadows, in Meadowvale Shopping Centre.

Golf course closed, property listed for sale After a half century in Webster’s Corners, the Robson family is leaving. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Heather Hills Golf Course is closed to the public and owners Gordy and Mary Robson have listed their property for sale. After deciding to no longer fight an order by the municipality to close the golf course – which has already cost the Robsons $50,000 in legal fees and could cost another $50,000 and drag on for another two years – they decided to call it quits.
The sign at Heather Hills reads “Closed to public by order of Mayor and Council.” Last year, the District of Maple Ridge launched a lawsuit to close the golf course west of 256th Street in Webster’s Corners, alleging it doesn’t comply with
the municipality’s zoning. The Robsons claim the golf course is meant for agri-tourism and will protect farmland for the future. They currently raise
Suffolk sheep on the farm. Gordy Robson said it’s frustrating “not being able to protect the land.” “That’s what we set out to do,” he said. There are six properties totalling 29 acres with five houses. They have listed the property for $6.33888 million. Robson said it was “devastating” having to sell the family property that they’ve been on since 1958. Throughout the years, they have tried farming but about a decade ago discovered the land was on a deep layer of clay. The District of Maple Ridge and Mayor Ernie Daykin were unable to comment by press time.

Forum creates ‘safe place’
A Meadowridge student hopes youth get inspired to combat bullying in their own schools. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
One Meadowridge student wants to create a safe place for students to discuss how to combat bullying, For the second year running, Jessica Jacob, a Grade 11 student at Meadowridge School in east Maple Ridge, is putting on an event, Speak Out Against Bullying Youth Forum, to discuss how students can fight bullying, scheduled to take place this Friday evening at the school. Jacob hopes the forum will be a “safe place without judgment from elders,” she said. “I felt kids needed a way to talk to each other without adults watching over them,” she said.
The ultimate goal of the forum is for students to go back to their respective schools and start awareness campaigns. There will be a guest speaker, Dave Jonsson, a motivational speaker from Port Coquitlam, who will talk about how he overcame adversity. Marcia Harrison, regional director of Kids Help Phone, will also be at the forum to help facilitate. After the speakers, attendees will then split up into groups for discussion about various themes: how students can combat bullying as individuals, how adults can help, and how schools can help. Students need to know how to talk to adults about bullying, which is why that is one of the topics of the small-group discussion sessions, Jacob explained. “I think we need to share our thoughts with [adults] so we can come up with a better solution [to combat bullying],” Jacob said. To attend the forum, contact Jacob at jessica.jacob@meadowridge.bc.ca.

Our View
Post office part of better past We were struck by Whonnockians’ united stand in the face of outsiders’ criticism of their beloved post office – a dilapidated shack from one point of view, or a heritage jewel from another. Whonnock is a little, very-rural community at the outer reaches of Maple Ridge – head east on Lougheed from Pitt Meadows into Hammond, through Haney, past Albion… and don’t blink at the wrong moment: there’s Whonnock. It’s not unusual for such a tight community to circle the wagons when it feels a threat from the outside. What struck us was the courtesy with which neighbours stood behind each other. Without obnoxious vociferation. Without harassing gesticulations. Without guns blazing. Just polite letters to the editor (albeit a lot of them!) offering understanding of their positive feelings for their post office – their neighbour. With nary a harsh word directed at the perpetrators of the perceived indiscretion, the letters politely directed the misdirected souls to solutions to the difficulties behind the unwarranted criticisms. Don’t mistake this for a cloistered community defending the “good ol’ days,” either. There’s lots about those “good ol’ days” that weren’t so great. But it appears Whonnockians have found a way to live in the present, while retaining some of the kinder, gentler, friendlier parts of the past that make some folks wish fondly for those “good ol’ days.” And that dear, old post office is clearly a part of their kinder, gentler, friendlier view of the past – and of their community as a whole. Communities like Whonnock can be found all across Canada. And we wonder how each will react as Canada Post brings its vision of the future – much more socially invasive than a couple of outsiders having difficulty picking up their mail – to their collective vision of the “good ol’ days.” – B.G.

Broken bollards unnecessary
Dear Editor, Here is another classic example of out-ofcontrol spending in our district, and this is just the icing on the cake. Think about it: a simple bollard that should not have been there in the first place, and they are all over our town, getting knocked down and getting replanted at taxpayers’ expense. Letters Is this a make-work project from the to District’s engineering staff? the And also what is with all the funky Will Waterbeek photo signs along our new multipurpose path Editor Motorists should be looking for on the Lougheed Highway? Philanthropy
Billionaires can easily give billions
Dear Editor, You did a pretty decent job of defining a billion dollars for us and putting it into perspective [A billion dollars is a lot, or not, Feb. 11 Odd Thoughts, TIMES]. It seems like a lot to me. I can’t even imagine being able to spend that much.
Giving away billions is admirable [Politics never black-and-white, Feb. 11 Letters, TIMES], but not such a big deal when you still have billions left over. Giving it to societies tells the world how wonderful they are, for doing something one should expect.
Environment
Oil protests a little scarier
Dear Editor, Am I to understand that, under Stephen Harper’s government, CSIS and the RCMP are now working for and reporting to the petroleum industry? I am opposed to Northern Gateway. Are they spying on me? Cheryl Baron, Maple Ridge
Giving to societies is a way to have more control over who gets assistance. It is possible to help only those who agree with a certain line of thinking. Paying a proper share of taxes so government social programs could be supported would require funds to be handed over and doled out more equitably, not based on belief systems, or affiliations. For the ultrarich, it’s like paying taxes relinquishes control. Gail Neufeld, Maple Ridge [Note: A fuller version is at www.mrtimes.com. Click on Opinion/Letters, or search the writer’s name.]

Tips help for hiring reputable help
Dear Editor, We are geotechnical and pavement design consultants, and know most of the local paving contractors (BA Blacktop, Keywest Asphalt, Imperial Paving, etc.). I noted this morning a small fleet of trucks in Maple Ridge with an out-of-area phone number. Because a paving “scam” team made the rounds on Vancouver Island last year, here are seven well-worn tips to help local people choosing a service. Selling door-to-door: Reputable asphalt
What you’re telling us on Facebook
•
TIMES columnist and former Maple Ridge mayor Gordy Robson announced he’s closed Heather Hills golf course and is selling the longtime family farm instead of battling the municipality. “I’d like to set up a pop-up driving range that faces city hall.” – Derek W. Robson “Really sad. I was looking forward to taking my kids golfing there. The people on the municipality have got to go. They are really behind the times.” – Melanie Williams “Can we come for a bar-b-q and a ‘walk’ on the farm with our clubs?” – Tracy Orobko “Agreed Melanie!!! Bylaws don’t help either, as I am fighting with them currently about other matters.” – Jamie Waddell Libby

contractors will sometimes offer their services if they are doing a legitimate job in the immediate area. Always ask for references. Claiming they have leftover asphalt from another job: Professional asphalt contractors will know, with great accuracy, how much paving material is needed to complete a project. Rarely will they have leftover material, although they might because of weather, equipment problems, cancellations, etc. Push you to make a quick decision: Reputable contractors will provide a written estimate that will be valid for weeks or months. If the great deal they are offering you today is not available tomorrow… think about it. No contract offered: Insist upon a written contract specifying in detail the work to be performed and the agreed-upon price. Cash only sales: Most reputable contractors take cheques or credit cards and don’t require cash-only terms. Deals that seem to be good to be true: If the quoted price seems very low, chances are the quality of the work will also be quite low. Unmarked truck: Often the trucks they travel in are unmarked, or they have an out-of-town address and phone number. A little research will reveal that they have no permanent address, and the phone number is often an answering machine. A professionally designed and properly constructed asphalt pavement will last for many years, and most reputable contractors will stand behind their work. Know who you are doing business with. Consumers are safer dealing with a contractor who has roots in the community. James Wetherill, Surrey

our customers,” he said. “We’re still open full-time with all the mechanical and tire services that we normally provide.” Lewarne explained that when they do take occupancy of the new building “sometime in July,” it will be a “seamless transition.” He added the new store means that they will go from four internal bays and two outside bays, to eight internal bays. “Our ability to inspect customers’ vehicles and put more vehicles on the bay will effectively double,” he said. Once the new store is running, the old one will be torn down to make way for increased customer parking, Lewarme added.

Kids take in safety tips Maple Ridge firefighters visited Laity View Elementary last week, giving kids pointers about fire safety. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
For a pair of paid on-call firefighters, teaching little ones fire safety at Ecole Laity View Elementary last Thursday morning and afternoon was time well spent. Todd Larsen and Dmitry Osadchy from the Maple Ridge fire department wrapped up three days of firefighters delivering their annual fire prevention lessons to kindergarten to Grade 3 students at Ecole Laity View.
Larsen and Osadchy taught kindergartners and Grade 1s different aspects of every day fire safety, including things in the kitchen that are hot such as coffee pots, stoves, and toasters, and about smoke alarms and what to do if one sounds. Maple Ridge firefighters were at the school from Feb. 25 to 27. “Unfortunately, with families that don’t practise, because smoke [alarms] are something they’re not familiar with…, kids will just hide under their covers of their bed [when an alarm sounds],” Larsen said. “We really try to get them to understand that, if a smoke detector goes off, it’s just like a fire bell at school. You go outside to your meeting place so that mom and dad can see you’re physically there and accounted for.”

“Being Diabetic, I never had pain-free feet - UNTIL NOW!”
Pain Doctor Discovers CirculationBoosting Material In ‘Miracle Socks’ for Diabetics and Foot Pain Sufferers! B r e a k t h r o u g h f i b e r s i m p r o v e b l o o d f l o w, s w e l l i n g , b o o s t o x y g e n f l o w, and eliminate foot fatigue - naturally within minutes!
If you suffer from poor circulation, injury, swelling or any condition that leaves your feet fatigued and sore, then read on to discover the breakthrough that can change your life. Good news comes in the form of a ‘pain-busting microfiber’ that is used to weave a circulation-boosting sock, called BambusaTM. Better Blood Flow The ‘miracle sock’ is made from a new, patented anion-technology that is weaved into every strand of thread used to make a BambusaTM sock. This special micro-fiber thread is made from revolutionary bamboo charcoal to stimulate blood flow and revitalize feet. When this material comes in contact with body-heat it is proven to release circulation-boosting ions. The 3D-weave technology used in the material has been compared to infrared light therapy to help revitalize stiff and sore muscles. The manufacturer, who also makes a back and wrist sleeve, says the material provides almost instant relief to any part of the body it touches, making it ideal for diabetics, athletes, inflammation, stiffness and swelling.
Anne M. from California agrees. “Bambusa socks are absolutely the most comfortable socks I have ever worn! My feet are no longer fatigued!” Doctor Recommended Pain specialist of 30 years, Dr. Ronald Jahner comments on the 3Dweave technology, “Infrared therapy has been used for years at medical clinics to treat vascular and circulatory conditions. Physical therapists use infrared therapy to speed recovery. Better blood flow equals less pain. This microfiber works much the same way.” Therapy Without A Prescription! When the socks were photographed using a thermographic imaging camera, results showed up to a 17% to 22% increase in blood flow. This helped to improve muscle oxygenation and decrease foot fatigue. The socks have been proven to provide extended relief from cold, swollen and fatigued feet. Relief for Tired, Swollen Feet BambusaTM socks are not a medical device or compression socks because they don’t restrict blood flow. Utilizing the special negative-anion technology, they comfortably increase blood flow and oxygen to tissues.

Goodbye to Pain and Numbness Marilyn H. has suffered persistent foot problems and noticed fast results. “The issue for me was persistent numbness in my toes - it was gone completely after a few days of wearing these socks!”

Every month, Maple Meadows Chiropractic chooses a charity to focus on – in February and March, it’s the Community Chest. Next week, March 9 to 15, is Community Chest Awareness Week, promoted by the Maple Ridge Community Foundation. Foundation members are hoping community members hold fundraisers and donate money to the chest,
which, administered by Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services, helps people who need emergency funds but can’t get financial help from anywhere else. Colleen Cowan, chiropractic assistant at Maple Meadows, said the doctors in the office like the “neighbours helping neighbours” aspect of the program. “The doctors here are into helping the community,” she said. The chiropractic clinic is offering an initial visit for $20, and this will be donated to the Community Chest. On Friday, to wrap up the week, Blenz Coffee
will have music from 7 to 9 p.m. and anyone who has raised money can drop it off then. More info: www.mrcf.ca. or 604-466-3312.
C y WATER MAIN FLUSHING
The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 3, 2014. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Dancers, poets, storytellers, and musicians performed at the lantern festival. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
It’s not everyday one sees an Arabian dancer in the centre of Haney Place Mall. But this was exactly the case, when the mall hosted the 2014 Festival of Lights on Feb. 28. Dancer Lausannne Ham was one of more than a dozen performers who entertained the crowd during the annual cultural celebration. A good-sized crowd gathered around the performance area and lantern workshops, where kids

After a season of highs and lows, the Samuel Robertson Technical senior boys basketball squad is off to the provincial tournament next week, for the first time in the school’s history. However, the achievement has not come without a season’s worth of hard work. “We started quite early in the season,” said coach Scott Tomlin. The season began with a “grad game – a game the school has a part of our program,” he added Tomlin said it was while watching that game that he realized he “had a lot of work to do,” to get the boys up to speed. But the fact that this season was one of extensive travel for the team may have been part of the key to their success. “We played a lot of games and were all over
the place this year,” Tomlin said. He noted part of their travel schedule included a trip down to Palm Springs for a tourney at Christmas – a time that usually sees the team take a break. Tomlin said the trip was a turning point for the team. “The tournament featured about 85 teams, so the boys got a good dose of reality,” he said. “We were playing in one of the lower divisions and getting pretty beat up.” But something clicked for the team after watching an elite game between a team from Seattle and a team from Alabama. “The boys realized you don’t have to be a 7’3 guy from East L.A. to play this game,” Tomlin said. He explained the team returned from the trip and started “doing things – rolling along with a little more confidence.” The team did well for a couple of weeks and then took a bit of a nosedive. “We could see our placing dropping and I was stressed because at one point, I didn’t even know if we’d make it this far this year,” said Tomlin. “Out of 10 teams in our
league, eight make it to the Fraser Valley’s and then from there four emerge to the B.C.s, so yeah, I was worried.” The team started improving towards the end of the year though. “We squeaked it out and finished fifth in our league, before the Fraser Valleys.” Tomlin explained he created a slogan: “Beat the three B’s: Bateman,
Brookside and Best (Secondary schools.)” This was an accomplishment in itself. “The Bateman game was very difficult, the Brookside game was okay, and the Best was the best,” he said. “Best was a top team honourable mention all year and we beat them,” exclaimed Tomlin. “It just proved that hard work gets
you through tough times.” He said this season has been all about the team setting step-by-step goals for themselves and knocking those off one at a time; this mindset didn’t change. “We set a goal: get to playoffs and make it to Fraser Valleys at Columbia (Bible College) in Abbotsford. This meant we had to win at least one of our two games beforehand.” The team accomplished this and then some, winning their next three games at Columbia. “It was awesome,” said Tomlin. Heading into provincials next week, the coach said the lack of high expectations on the team this year has resulted in an excited but somewhat relaxed team morale. “The kids are just happy to be here, and whatever happens, happens.” Tomlin said it’s a bit of a mystery as to why this team has been so successful this year, but pointed to things like him maturing as a coach and being able to better guide the students, as well as setting achievable team goals. Provincials begin on March 12 in Langley.

Maple Ridge swingers showed off their talents State-side recently. A Maple Ridge square dance club, called the Town & Country Swingers, recently took bus trip south of the 49th Parallel for a three-day square dance festival in Albany, Ore. The festival was held in the Linn County Fairgrounds, where the group – headed up by John and Mary Corrigan – proudly had a picture taken holding a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES.

SPECIAL ADVERTORIAL
Product Hailed by Doctors as the Solution for Back Pain
Doctor developed decompression belt has been called the solution for back pain. Dr. Michael Ho announced the first 100 customers save 50% and get a free Heat Pad with their Back Relief Belt. Each household is limited to only 2 belts.
By Marc Charron Health and Lifestyle
Back pain affects 8 out of 10 people. It can also rob you of your happiness, where getting out of bed becomes a painful reminder of your bad back. While pills provide temporary relief, the condition can reoccur, because pills mask the symptoms and do not target the cause of the pain. Other treatments cost thousands of dollars or have substantial health risks. “That’s why most people end up “living” with their bad back,” says Dr. Michael Ho. Dr. Michael Ho is a doctor with over 20 years of clinical experience specializing in treating the cause of chronic back pain, including Degenerative Disc Disease, Sciatic Nerve Pain, Scoliosis, Spinal Stenosis and Herniated / Bulging discs. His belief is to treat the cause of the problem so that patients get long term relief, earning him international recognition for his patient care and expertise. No Belt
“Many people have back pain due to spinal disc compression. This can result in back pain, which if left untreated, can lead to more serious conditions.” Dr. Ho has developed a back supporting decompression belt that can be used at home, allowing you to help relieve your back pain, while saving time and money. Dr. Ho’s brand new Decompression Belt is endorsed by medical professionals and customers that have suffered with long-term, chronic back pain. "I have used many modalities to treat my patients, but nothing is as effective as the decompression belt. To effectively treat someone with back pain, the patient must receive treatment everyday for 6 - 8 weeks. People cannot afford the time or money to visit the doctor everyday. I developed this belt because patients need a device they can use at home,” says Dr. Ho.
With Belt
Dr. Ho’s Decompression Belt expands to help decompress the spine to provide support and help relieve the pain. The belt will help relieve your pain in as little as 20 minutes, even if you’ve suffered with back pain for many years. And you can even wear the belt while doing activities.
