Garibaldi Art Club opens its annual spring show Saturday. by Maria Rantanen

Carrots at the farmers market, cyclists taking part in Race the Ridge, District workers hanging lights on the bandstand – these are some of the moments from Memorial Peace Park captured on canvases by Garibaldi Art Club members. The juried paintings will make up Seasons in the Park, the art club’s annual spring show that opens this Saturday at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery. The gallery, located inside The ACT, looks out onto the District’s iconic Memorial Peace Park – and this vista inspired gallery curator Barb Duncan to task the art group about a year ago to paint what the park meant to them. So many people cross paths in Memorial Peace Park, which is “becoming an iconic place in the community,” Duncan said, and have face-to-face meetings, something that’s becoming less common.

RCMP
Mounties take steps to reduce traffic crashes Officers have been dedicated to the worst intersections. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The worst intersection for crashes in Maple Ridge is Lougheed Highway at Kanaka Way with 80 to 85 accidents a year. Ridge Meadows RCMP has identified seven of the worst intersections in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows – all found along Lougheed Highway – and have dedicated officers to monitoring each of them.
The second highest crash site is where Lougheed Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road meet at 200th Street. Others include where Lougheed meets with 203rd, 207th, and 216th Streets, as well as Harris and Kennedy Roads. Sgt. Bruce McCowan, the new officer in charge of traffic squad, said his “prime mandate” is crash reduction. McCowan spent the past six years with the Integrated Collision, Analyst, Reconstructionist Services. There is no quick fix to reducing crashes. Officers will be focussing on education and enforcement,

and working with municipal engineers to make intersections safer, he said. “Together we can all play a part in harm reduction, as fewer crashes mean less injuries and deaths on our roads,” McCowan announced at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. Some options are expensive, he said, and can take time to put in place – like new lights or fixing left-turn bays. But there might be some inexpensive things, like signs identifying high-crash sites, that could be implemented more quickly.

Sgt. Bruce McGowan is the new head of traffic services with Ridge Meadows RCMP, and Const. Mike Moore is another new member of the team.

Roads made safer The Insurance Corporation of B.C. spent $139,000 in Maple Ridge last year to improve road safety. ICBC partnered with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the District of Maple Ridge on these projects. “Everyone benefits from road improvements – from drivers to pedestrians – because safer roads mean fewer crashes, which also translates into lower claim costs,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. • More at www.mrtimes.com

The municipality is preparing for a substantial hike in people coming to live in the area in the next 30 years. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
By 2031, Maple Ridge’s population – currently estimated at close to 80,000 – will spike to roughly 108,900. The projected number is based on a study done for the District’s Official Community Plan (OCP) review, drafted in 2006. When the District put together its regional context statement – a document that identifies how its OCP is in alignment with the regional growth strategy – Maple Ridge council revisited the population numbers. “For 2041 it will be 118,000,” said the District’s director of planning Christine Carter. “That’s not a cap. It’s a best guess and if we don’t come anywhere close to it, it’s fine. If we exceed it by 20- or 30,000 people, that’s fine, too. It’s just an acknowledgement that we will likely hit this number.” According to the District, its town centre area is expected to grow by close to 14,700 people during the next decade. In part to prepare for this influx of new residents, the District adopted its town centre area plan in 2008. “The town centre is council’s No. 1 priority and there is an expectation that the town centre will accept 50 per cent of all new growth in the District,” Carter said. The plan focuses on adding density to the 700-acre downtown area, and to improve amenities available. “We talked to our economist and he was saying, if you want to get commercial growth in your town centre, quit insisting that every development have a commercial component,” Carter explained. “Allow residential density. Focus on getting people to live downtown. You’ve got to get people to live in your downtown, and then the retail-

By 2031, that number is projected to triple to 21,000 people. More people will hopefully bring an improved transit system to the area, Carter said. “One of the reasons council has committed to the town centre is we know that if we can get enough people living down there, we’ll get better transit,” she said. “Getting people out of their cars, giving them the option, and getting them faster routes elsewhere – because a lot of people are commuting, and they just hate it.” The District has a vision of having SkyTrain or some equivalent of rapid transit from Haney Place Mall. But in the immediate future, the focus is
bringing a rapid bus system to Maple Ridge. Another factor for the projected population growth in Maple Ridge is a relatively affordable real estate market. Based on the benchmark price in February, Maple Ridge is the second cheapest area, under the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver umbrella, in which to buy a single-family, detached home. The benchmark price is a relative bargain, averaging $458,400, up half a percentage point from January and 7.1 per cent higher than it was in February 2009, just after the global economic crisis. In other parts of the Lower Mainland, prices have spun out of control, most notably in West Vancouver where the cost for a single-detached home has spiked 61.7 per cent during the past five years. The benchmark price of a single-detached home in that community is a mind-boggling $2.15 million. “We all know someone who sold a townhouse or a condo in Vancouver and came out here and bought a house,” Carter said. “And those are the people who are having kids and living here.” Sandra Wyant, president of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver and a local realtor for the past 23 years with Re/Max LifeStyles Realty, said Maple Ridge is becoming a much sought-after area, especially for first-time home buyers. “We now have buyers coming from south of the river who would never even consider this area before,” Wyant said. “Low price points” bring house hunters to Maple Ridge, especially with the recent change by the provincial government to the property transfer tax, Wyant added. Another dangling carrot for newbie home owners: first time home buyers can qualify for a full exemption on the property transfer tax if the property they’re buying is worth $475,000 or less if registered on or after Feb. 19, 2014 and is 1.24 acres or smaller. But with fewer detached homes available comes demand and multiple offers from buyers, Wyant noted.

Smart Meter opponent calls police on installers by Eric Zimmer
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Death or jail are the only two things that a Maple Ridge man said will stop his fight against Smart Meter installation on the side of his house. And on Tuesday, Ron McNutt, who lives in a townhouse on Darby Street, put those words into action when he called the police after Corix showed up on his property to install the new meters. Citing trespassing by Corix,

McNutt wasn’t entirely sure what would result from the call, and even recognized there was a possibility he might be arrested himself. In the end though, Corix left without installing the Smart Meters and McNutt was still a free man. McNutt, whose townhome has six analog meters installed on the side of his house for him and his neighbours, said he and the residents involved, have all previously agreed to pay the $35 opt-out fee to keep the old meters. But now, he said, two town-
Nurse Next Door makes television debut tonight Show fans will find out Thursday night if Maple Ridge’s Rina Varley wins her own franchise. Unsuspecting Maple Ridge resident and sales manager Rina Varley from Nurse Next Door was approached by her boss and asked if she wanted to be on national TV. Excited, Varley agreed, and she’ll be making her television debut tonight (Thursday, March 20). But she’s not appearing on the show she originally thought. Instead, she’ll be appearing in Be The Boss Canada on W Network at 8 p.m. tonight. The part-time Nurse Next Door sales manager had no idea she was Rina Varley being recruited to compete in a show that pits two employees against each Nurse Next Door other to complete a series of challenges for a chance to win a promotion, or their own franchise location. “I had no idea what I was in store for,” said Varley. “I was told that it was a documentary for great Canadian businesses. I was just excited to be picked to represent Nurse Next Door.” Roughly 20 contestants were chosen from Nurse Next Door’s Canadian franchise locations and from that list, the number was whittled down to eight. A camera crew from Be The Boss Canada travelled to each one, conducting individual interviews, though the candidates thought they were part of an inter-company documentary. From there, Varley and Diane Neudorf, a caregiver with Nurse Next Door Vernon, were chosen to compete for a chance at the big prize. • More at www.mrtimes.com, search “Varley”

house residents are selling their units and “have changed their minds and want Smart Meters installed.” McNutt explained he had a brain tumour that was removed in 2010, and said there’s “at least five” studies that show a direct correlation between the wireless meters and risks of brain tumours. “I’m refusing it on that grounds,” he said. McNutt has no problem with people who want Smart Meters – so long as they’re not on his home. “I say, fine just take your meter and put it on your house and have a Smart Meter – I have no problem with that,” he added.

The wells he has drilled have provided drinking and irrigation water to several villages in Malawi – previously people would drink from the ditches. Klassen’s goal for the villages he does development work in is to help them become self-sufficient within three and a half years, so he encourages them to grow enough food for eating and selling. And many of their gardens are now producing enough for themselves as well as to earn money, Klassen said. This time, in addition to drilling the 25th well, Klassen brought over medicine and bought a new stove for the kitchen. The stove is efficient and doesn’t heat up the whole kitchen like the previous one, he explained. Klassen plans to go back in June to break ground for another orphan care centre in the village of Chipusile-2, where 400 orphans will be cared for by another non-

A Maple Ridge man was crowned honorary chief on his latest trip to Malawi after drilling the 25th well in the small, land-locked country in southern Africa. George Klassen was named Chief Nyoni, which means “bringer of gifts” on his recent trip to Malawi, something he called “humbling.” Klassen, who is in his mid 70s, visits the Ntcheu district of Malawi two or three times a year and brings funds to feed about 200 orphans who are cared for in an orphan care centre. He has been visiting and helping the country for nine years under the name Project Wellness, which is a division of the charitable organization Amazon Evangelism. What keeps Klassen going back are the orphans and the widows, he said, and when he arrives, he is greeted by the children. “They just run beside the vehicle and greet me and they sing – when Malawians sing,

Scenes from Memorial Peace Park inspire Garibaldi artists ...continued from page A1
Duncan said she thinks Maple Ridge residents will love the show and recognize the places as seen through the eyes of the artists. “It creates a sense of place which is the most important function of local art,” Duncan said. Seeing art that depicts their familiar surroundings makes people more attached to their community, she added. Whether the paintings stay with the artists’ families or become a part of a collection, Duncan believes their longer-term function will be to record history. “This is what Maple Ridge looked like in 2014,” she said of the paintings that make up Seasons in the Park. The easily accessible park in downtown Maple Ridge, located in front of The ACT
and the art gallery, is “not just as a special weekend destination,” said Duncan. “I see folks stopping momentarily to enjoy the park as they are on their way to work or school, out doing some shopping or any other business that takes place in the downtown core,” she said. “I also consider it a great privilege to be able to enjoy the Maple Ridge Art Gallery’s outlooks onto the park each day. So often I am struck not just by the outdoor views, but the quality of light throughout the year and how it changes from hour to hour.” This is the annual spring juried show of the Maple Ridge-based art club that was formed in 1959. Our View
Elections act short on ‘fair’ Majority governments can use their numbers to their advantage in our democracy, but that doesn’t make it right. Our current federal government is going a big step beyond what was once considered “part of the game,” by reaching beyond the lines of partisanship, and into the realm of the franchise that Canadians have come to take for granted. The ironically titled Fair Elections Act, Bill C-23, is being roundly criticized by scholars, pundits, the opposition, and people from many and varied walks. Described by the government as a means to reform the federal electoral machinery, it has all the handiwork of a Trojan horse in the form of a ballot box. First, what the Conservatives have put on the table lacks transparency. They want little or no debate on the bill – it came out of nowhere and was dropped on the floor while the nation was watching the Sochi Olympics – and have mined it with items that would only benefit the party in power. One contentious area is the elimination of Voter Information Cards as eligible identification (but never the only source). That would make voting more difficult for students, seniors in care facilities, and First Nations people. Another is stripping Elections Canada of its ability to safeguard the electoral process and eliminate its role in promoting voter participation. It’s too easy to suspect that the Conservatives’ desire to rebuild Elections Canada stems from a wish to avoid being caught cheating again, as they were in the 2006 In-and-Out Scandal – and they are still in the thick of the RoboCalls Scandal. With a majority in the House and a Senate full of yes-men, Stephen Harper has the leverage to build his advantage by imposing the Fair Elections Act on Canadians who have, since the beginning of our nation, fought against such travesties. – Glacier Media

Medicinal marijuana
Law forces patients into pain
Dear Editor, The insanity of the new medicinal marijuana laws is incredto ible. What does the government think it is going to gain from it, the besides enjoying the pain and fear it is causing innocent, sick people? If the government is looking at the tax boosts that Colorado is showing and anticipating some of the same, it’d best re-think. Colorado is making big bucks on legal pot, not medicinal. Most of the people on medicinal marijuana are too sick or crippled to be able to work, so they have little income. They absolutely cannot afford the prices that the government grow-ops will be charging; it would be cheaper to deal with the street prices, except they can’t afford that either. Their only access to this wonderful gift
Letters
Mother Nature provided us is if they grow a few plants themselves. Now they’re told they have to destroy their beautiful plants, and go back to pharmacy products which too often don’t work, and cause worse side effects that they also can’t afford. They are told that their marijuana will be coming in their mailbox. What looney decided on that, with our mailboxes standing at the end of the block? Anybody got a little crowbar? It appears that our governments, federal and provincial, are set on punishing people for being sick or old and crippled, and are sending them back into pain and suffering for no sensible reason. Who gave them the right to say we can’t grow a plant that the creator gave us? Marijuana is an herb not a drug! Marian Chisholm, Maple Ridge

Disabled cut to pay ‘most in need’
Dear Editor, Apparently it does serve a purpose to divide people. Our B.C. government says so. I am disabled, and along with 82,452 of us (as of May 2012) who are forced to live on B.C. Persons with Disability Benefits, I struggle on an income that has been held within $120 of the same restricted $906 per month for more than two decades. Meanwhile many necessary expenses that were once covered for the disabled have been downloaded onto us by our government, and far exceed those $120. B.C. gives us nearly $700 less than what Alberta gives its disabled each month. Deputy Minister Sharon Moysey responded on Jan. 4, 2011, to an email letter I wrote to Minister Rich Coleman on Nov. 30, 2010, expressing how difficult it is to survive on so much less than what we need. Ms. Moysey wrote, “In reviewing its rates, the ministry takes into consideration cost of living studies, inflation, assistance rates in other provinces, the dieticians’ report on the cost of eating, and recommendations by the BC Progress Board.” Then she said something that absolutely astonished me: “By keeping increases to benefits separate from the rate of inflation, the provincial government is able to manage its budget over the long term and target increases to those British Columbians most in need.”
Though disabled recipients are supposed to be allowed an $800 per month income exemption, none of my income ever qualifies, and they always deduct it penny for penny off my monthly cheques. When I challenged the fairness of it at tribunal, and brought up Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Section 15 that deals with equality rights for the disabled, I was told quite plainly that the Charter didn’t apply to me, and they need not consider it. It appears the disabled are left out in the cold when it comes to the rate of inflation, or the actual cost of living. And it’s been acceptable to our government to “divide” us from the rest of society for a very long time. It appears these pillars of society see themselves as more needy than the disabled, as they would never consider such a policy where their own publicly paid salaries were concerned. And she did say they were doing it to us so they could target increases to those they felt needed it most. Ms. Katnich [Rich and poor good and bad, March 11 Letters, TIMES] should know that legislated poverty isolates me, and I get sicker each year for needing to go without more and more. Should I crawl away to die quietly so nothing will ever change, or should I tell the world what’s going on? Gail Neufeld, Maple Ridge

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!
Thanks Bruce, I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Conservatives ignore uncomfortable science
their concerns are not how much of the information is being put into the system, but rather how much is being destroyed. The federal government has laid off more than 2,000 scientists whose work would appear to be in conflict with the goals of the Conservative Party. Some of those scientists are world-renowned for their work in protecting wild resources such as salmon, waterways, and the environment. Regardless of the millions of dollars spent on the Cohen Commission, this government opened the doors to fish farm expansion. Interestingly, Fisheries Minister Gail Shea provided this information to fish farmers in October 2013, but First Nations with direct interests were not notified officially until early January 2014. How much more is being hidden? I respectfully suggest Mr. Randy Kamp, MP for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission and Secretary to the Fisheries Minister, start listening to British Columbians in protecting our province’s salmon resources. The lack of respect for B.C.’s provincial fish, the wild Pacific salmon, not farmed Atlantic salmon, is unbelievable and terminal. Cliff Olson, Maple Ridge

The ACT
A dance troupe whose motto is ‘Excellence in motion’ performs in Maple Ridge this weekend. Ballet Kelowna dancers are at The ACT this Sunday evening with InnOvation, a program designed to celebrate Canadian choreography. From the poignantly heartbreaking I Remember You to the joyously uplifting Exsultate, Jubilate, Ballet Kelowna’s spring show will feature the dancers performing pieces that showcase their new motto “Excellence in Motion.” Award-winning jazz musician Neville Bowman has created an original score for a brand new ballet, Redux Continuum, choreographed by Ballet Kelowna’s artistic director, David LaHay. “It tells the story of what might happen if the ballet master was to leave the classroom,” said LaHay. Each of the dancers is given a chance to shine in what they do best in this piece, set to the original score by Bowman. Ballet Kelowna performs at The ACT on March 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $15 for students. For tickets, call 604-476-2787 or go to www.theactmapleridge.org.
C y WATER MAIN FLUSHING
The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 3, 2014. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. ot too long ago, I attended my first ever yoga class with my girlfriend. It turned out I was the only first-timer in the room of about 30 people. All told, I enjoyed the onehour, drop-in class more than I thought I would, and – schedule permitting – I will go again. For Lisa Papez, a certified yoga teacher, and owner of the soon-to-open Body Positivity Yoga studio in Maple Ridge, it’s making that first experience a positive one that is the core of her business. “My goal is that a beginner could come into any class, no matter what it’s called, take a class and have a good experience,” she said. Papez, who’s been practising yoga for about 15 years, said she takes the Hatha practice – “the physical practice of yoga,” and introduces the aspect of making it “really friendly” to beginners of all shapes, sizes, and abilities. She said she came up with the Body Positivity concept, “really a long time ago,” after noticing that “there wasn’t a lot of representation out there when it came to people with different

Art reflects waterways An event bringing together art and the environment takes place this Saturday in Maple Ridge.
Photos, paintings, and poems are just some of the ways to pay homage to lifegiving water. Fraser Voice, Watershed Watch Salmon Society’s Fraser Valley outreach project, is hosting a community gathering focusing on art and all that inspires an appreciation for water in Maple Ridge and the surrounding communities. The event will take place on World Water Day, Saturday, March 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. at River’s Heritage Centre, Alouette River Management Society, 24959 Alouette Rd., in Maple Ridge’s Allco Park. The event is meant to celebrate fresh water and wild spaces at Our Home Waters, highlighting local artists inspired by the waters in Maple Ridge. Attendees will have an opportunity to see local watersheds re-imagined through an artistic lens. Guests can draw from all the inspiration the day has to offer and provide creative ideas towards a community water art project. Incorporating art in its many forms, there will also be an open-mike session
Galina Cooper, a Maple Ridge artist, has done some painting based on inspiration from the Alouette River (above), while Kristen Krimmel will display some art (left) at this weekend’s Our Home Waters event. where everyone is welcome to bring their poetry, spoken word, or songs inspired by water and nature. The open-mike session is for all ages and all genres. Our Home Waters celebrates the beauty and strength of the natural world we are part of. Lina Azeez with Fraser Voice said often the focus is on doom and gloom issues in the environmental movement, but she’d like to also focus on the positive. “We forget to stop and take a breather and appreciate what we have,” Azeez said, adding that art is a “beautiful medium to be re-inspired to do our work.” Canada Water Week events are held annually across Canada during the third week of March to coincide with World Water Day on March 22. Refreshments will be provided and donations will be accepted to cover costs of this public gathering.

Moving their store Sector 2814 from the former Haney Books location a couple blocks east uncovered a mystery for owners Nina Fowell and her son Trevor. As they were packing up their store, they found a baby photo album which Fowell is sure someone would like back. Sector 2814 was first located at Dewdney Trunk Road just west of 224th Street. They are currently
at #109-22550 Dewdney Trunk Rd. The album contained a card for “great grandma” with a baby picture of Duncan William, born in March 2004 and signed Ingrid, Kevin, and Duncan. There’s also a photo of “great grandma” with baby Duncan as well as several family pictures. Fowell was stumped as to where the album had come from or when. Anyone who has information about the owner can call Fowell at 604-2405032.

She had her picture taken with a copy of her hometown newspaper, The TIMES, and a City of Vancouver garbage can at Monty’s Surf Camp. Vancouver donated a container full of outdated garbage cans that “were present all over,” Boekhorst said. Also on the excursion were (below) Rotarians from the Coquitlam Sunrise Club Hew Mitchell, Rhian Piprah, and Malcolm Kennedy, as well as Meadowridge Rotarians Ineke, Angie Edmonds, and Ineke’s husband Peter. They spent two weeks there building kitchens and replacing aging roofs on schools. They held The TIMES and two sponsor signs up against a plastered wall of one of those completed kitchens. “Such a proud moment… we did it,” Ineke said.

One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. What’s going on here?

About 50 competitive rock climbers from throughout the province will arrive in Maple Ridge this weekend. They’ll all be part of a climbing competition that takes place on Saturday at The Rock Wall climbing gym. The competition is the first one the facility has hosted in five years. “It was time and our turn,” said Valerie Spurrell, whose husband owns the gym. The competition will feature categories in both speed and difficulty. The difficulty component gets underway at 10 a.m. with the qualifying round. Then, from 1 to 3 p.m., the speed climbing competition will take place. That’s followed by the difficulty finals from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Competitors range in age from nine, to “somewhere in their 40s,” Spurrell said. Spectators are welcome and admission is free. The Rock Wall is located at 11455 201A St. in Maple Ridge. More info at: therockwall.com.
