Katzie welcome new chief, council

Robin Green, Peter James, and Rick Green join chief Susan Miller on council. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Led in by a procession of Katzie children, the new chief and council were sworn in on Tuesday evening at the First Nations reserve in south Pitt Meadows, After a buffet dinner in the

long house with drumming and singing by band members – many of the youth leading – the new chief Susan Miller and band council members, Robin Green, Peter James, and Rick Green, who were elected on March 1, read their code of conduct and oath of office. “[It’s] absolutely amazing to be able to do this ceremony in the long house,” said Miller. “It’s much more cultural – the meaning is deeper and it will stay with me for a very long time.”

Miller was elected as interim chief in the fall when the previous chief stepped down, but at the nomination meeting for the regularly scheduled election of March 1, she was acclaimed chief. A dozen children led the new council and dignitaries, including Ridge Meadows RCMP operations head Insp. Dan Splinter,

into the long house. The children were also part of the ceremony, giving out coins to thank the witnesses and dignitaries who came to the Katzie long house for the swearing-in ceremony. Dean Sam emceed the ceremony, talking about the “sacred ceremony” – the gathering in the long house.

Education

Schools squeezed

Trustees warn that budget cuts will affect students. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The board of education needs to cut $5 million from its budget and trustees are concerned it will have an impact on students. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows board of education is entering its budget deliberation process for the 2014/15 school year and, like last year, they are facing a funding shortfall. But Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Marc Dalton Dalton, said MLA what the school district is experiencing is “the same challenge we’re feeling across all ministries.” The provincial government is committed to a balanced budget and “living within our means,” Dalton said, and going into debt would be “short-term relief but long-term pain.” Last year, the school district also faced a funding shortfall, but still managed to trim its budget and ended up with a balanced budget, he pointed out. “How was it they were able to balance it?” Dalton said. In a news release, trustees said the shortfall comes from a lack of provincial funding to “cover increased expenses in areas over which the board has no control,” for example, union contracts, utility hikes, and an employer-paid pension plan.

Preserved farmland to the north, sloping hills to the south, its different here. Be among the ďŹ rst to plant roots in a place that will grow and develop into a community of lasting value, not by chance, but by careful planning. Streetscapes that have a consistent theme with craftsmen exteriors, double car garages, generous yards. Modern interior features and oor plans will enhance the enjoyment of your home and your lifestyle. Just imagine, the morning paper on your front deck, a coffee and the sounds of nature. If life gets any better than this, it will happen here, at Montgomery Acres.

The space has more than tripled in size, new modern equipment fills the floor, and at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, the renovated gym at the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre opened its doors to the public. The renovations, which began in November, were more about more than just an equipment and design overhaul. And the process began before the first wall was even knocked down. “We decided that if we were going to do this, let’s be innovative and start from scratch,” said Jeff Lemire, a recreation programmer with Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services. “We went around the Lower Mainland and our team was responsible for looking at trends and what’s new in fitness,” he said. Lemire said factors like sustainability, the use of natural light, and forward-thinking design all played a part in the final product. “The project started out with a federal grant that the City of Pitt Meadows matched, and part of the grant had to do with improving accessibility of the space as well,” he explained. Before the renovation, the facility was “pretty cramped – it was tricky for anyone to get around, let alone someone in a wheelchair or with mobility issues, so we kept that at the forefront of our minds when designing this new space.” Much of the design and the gym’s features were a direct result of feedback from gymusers themselves, he added. Before renovations began, staff created what they called a “feedback wall” – a glass wall where customers left post-it notes of ideas and things they would like to see in the renovated gym. “We had hundreds of those up on the wall,” Lemire said. Lifted ceilings, new light fixtures, improved open spaces were just some of the

results. And of course there were the machines and accessories as well. “I would say that 85 to 90 per cent of the equipment is all new,” he added. The gym used two different fitness brands to outfit the facility: Techno Gym and Life Fitness, which Lemire said was the preexisting brand in the old facility, that users “already know and loved.” The concept of accessibility influenced the decisions of which equipment to buy. Many of the machines are wheelchair accessible, including the Sci Fit Ergometer – a machine that can be powered by either arms or legs. Despite all the new features, equipment and expanded space, Lemire noted the price of a membership has not changed.

“If anything, we’ve expanded our low-cost opportunities.” For example, Lemire said the facility used to offer toonie Tuesdays. “What we’ve done now is expand those opportunities throughout the week, so there’s multiple times on different days to appeal to different people and their schedules.” The only thing that has increased is the centre’s hour of operations. The gym is open from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Though it had its soft opening on Wednesday, the facility’s grand opening will be on April 25. For more information on the facility and all it offers, people can call 604-465-2452. The centre is located at 12027 Harris Rd.

Ridge council launches live stream of meetings Technology in chambers has been upgraded.

Starting Tuesday, Maple Ridge council meetings will be available live on the Internet via computers, tablets, and smartphones. Council meetings will be live-

streamed using the same technical setup that was used during recent budget question-andanswer events. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin called it the “next evolution of technology” in council chambers. “Over the last few years, Shaw Cable has moved away from

live broadcasting our council meetings. Maple Ridge has been upgrading technology in our council chambers to provide high-quality recording and broadcasting capability,” Daykin said. On council meeting nights, citizens can click on the “Videos” tab on the home page of maple-

ridge.ca and then click on “Live Streaming Council Meetings.” New users are encouraged to go online before the meeting to test out existing videos. For more information, contact Ceri Marlo with legislative services at clerks@mapleridge.ca or by calling 604-463-5221.

Metal maple leaves in changing colours greet people entering the District of Maple Ridge from the west. Seven poles have been erected along Dewdney Trunk Road adorned with green, orange, and red maple leaves west of 202nd Street, costing the District about $10,000 from gaming centre proceeds. The stanchions were left over from a previous District project and the maple leaf cutout shapes were previously used to decorate the bus loop in downtown Maple Ridge in an anti-vandalism effort. Because the strip along Dewdney wasn’t suitable for banners, trees, or planters, the District wanted some “decorative element” at the entrance to the District, explained communications manager Fred Armstrong. This is part of council’s policy of making sure the town and downtown area are attractive to people coming from outside the community. “Folks coming into the community, they see a nice, clean, vibrant community,” Armstrong said. The three green, two orange, and two red decorative pieces represent the changing seasons. There were some negatives comments posted on Maple Ridge Council Watch Facebook page, for example, Graham Mowatt, former council candidate, said “considering all the crying about needing money for our crumbling infrastructure justifying tax increases, why are we spending money on things like this and banners when there are obviously much greater needs.” But Armstrong pointed out that there was lots of positive feedback on the District’s Facebook page. Former councillor Craig Speirs commented on the District’s page: “I love the local connection and the creative re-use... Public art should always be a little controversial and on that score they seem to be successful...” TUESDAYS .99 CENT CRAB LEGS $2.99 BELLINI’S

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

Thanks Bruce, I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Our View

MLAs’ belts not too tight Apparently it’s true confession time in B.C.’s Legislative Assembly these days. Hands up all those politicians who took a vacation with their family on the public dime that they’d like to come clean about. For all the talk about transparency and accountability, and cautionary tales of politicians who were less than forthcoming about what they billed to the public, there’s a lot of ink still being spilled on the topic. A recent example is Speaker Linda Reid, who took her husband to a commonwealth conference in South Africa at taxpayers’ expense, where they were photographed doing important government work like petting lions and giraffes. Isn’t it amazing that work so integral to democracy never gets scheduled in Winnipeg in January? Not to be outdone, deputy speaker Ray Chouchan was soon making his own confession to taking his wife on the same junket, adding Reid had told him the expense was okay. Expense confessions have proved a remarkably bipartisan activity. There are regulations governing what kind of travel politicians can bill. But the regulations are lax and the loopholes so large a 747 can be – and frequently is – flown through them. Politicians who have taken advantage of the rules know it is wrong. But they have come to consider it a perk of the job, and have adopted a “buy now, pay when caught” mentality. It’s time the rules were tightened. But don’t hold your breath. Consider some of the expenses claimed by MLAs on both sides of the legislature. We’ll see you a Liberal Linda Reid, and raise you an NDP Jenny Kwan… Leaving the rule-fixing to the collective conscience and moral judgment of those we elect has so far proved remarkably ineffective. – Glacier Media

Smart meters

Holdouts have their reasons

Dear Editor, You probably already have a BC Hydro smart meter and wonder why many holdouts like me still don’t want one. Here’s why. BC Hydro has without our knowledge or agreement made a material change in the way our electrical usage is monitored and controlled. A previously safe and CSA approved analog meter is being replaced with a wireless smart meter of dubious safety, with built-in privacy information and time-of-use billing capabilities. Brought in through duplicitous means with no debate in the legislature, the grossly misnamed Clean Energy Act expands BC Hydro’s role from being a simple supplier of electricity to being the judge, jury, and executioner of your energy usage and lifestyle data profile. Previously private information that is data-mined from your household via the smart meter now becomes BC Hydro’s property. It works like the negative billing campaigns: by not refusing a smart meter, you are effectively giving your implied consent to supplying BC Hydro with private information on the patterns occurring within your home that would previously have required a court-ordered wiretap.

Response

Insults were not necessary

Dear Editor, You referred to the “ultra-conservative – and ultra-ignorant – religious community in Chilliwack” that doesn’t vaccinate its children [Measles okay with ignorance, March 18 Our View, TIMES]. I resent the insults to conservatives and religious folk. I agree that to not immunize your helpless children against a terrible disease such as measles is a gigantic mistake. I totally believe in God and Jesus Christ, and my children were immunized on schedule, and they are healthy today as adults. Would you please keep in mind that our town paper is wanted to be a printing of information, opinion, and debate, but not insults and abuse? Middle class

Improvement despite government

Dear Editor, I would agree the middle class is doing better than ever [Middle class doing better than ever, March 27 Letters, TIMES]. It is not, however, because of the Conservative government, but in spite of them. The middle class should be doing a lot better. One reason the middle class is doing better is there are fewer now, because we have more poor. I know of many previous middle-class people who lost businesses due

to the Conservative lack of effort to grow the economy. Many have lost jobs from Conservative policy of down-sizing government, The Conservatives have done very little to get the country out of this depression/ recession. They should be investing in infrastructure and education to get the economy moving, and instead are focused on debt and their trickle-down theory. They need to borrow and invest in people to get people working, so that taxes can be paid. When we get people working, the debt can be paid off. If the Conservative government keeps cutting employment, you have fewer taxpayer and higher social service costs. It is easy to say they plan to create jobs and encourage economic growth. We need a government that actually creates jobs and makes economic growth happen. Dan Banov, Maple Ridge

BC Ferries

Communities dying

Dear Editor, A software guy from the Interior is not qualified to have the portfolio overseeing BC Ferries, particularly if he can’t even be bothered to learn the history. Minister Stone and his boss will be responsible for B.C. losing billions of dollars of tourism dollars and the demise of many, many coastal communities with their irresponsible actions and desperate attempt to salvage the business that they and their government are responsible for screwing up in the first place. A Maple Ridge paramedic has launched a new medical identification product – the first of its kind in Canada. Lee Roberts is the owner of the ResQ Scan Bracelet, an app that uses smartphone scanner technology (QR codes,) to obtain critical medical and personal information. Roberts, who has more than 13 years of experience as a paramedic, said the development of the product grew out of what he saw as a need for timely and accurate patient information. “It came from years of being a paramedic, and doing hundreds and hundreds of calls where people didn’t have proper identification, or there was a language barrier,” Roberts explained. He said he started doing research in Canada, and discovered there was no such product that fit what he was looking for. However, he did come across a company in the US that had what he was seeking, and he “just kind of grabbed ahold of the technology.” It wasn’t necessarily a quick process, though. “It took me probably a good six to

In addition, delving into this type of work was brand new territory for Roberts. “I have a little bit of a background in marketing and promotions, but it was more a matter of finding a product I could use that would appeal to all ages, and whether the technology would work on the product.” Throughout the development of his product,, Roberts had one goal for it: the ability to provide timely and

detailed medical information to emergency personnel, when patients can’t do it themselves. “There’s a real benefit to using QR codes,” Roberts said. “It allows us to create a dynamic profile that can be changed whenever the customer needs to update their information, such as prescription medication changes.” Patients purchase a bracelet, they fill out a form with as much or as little information as they want to provide. This information can be updated regularly.

Education

Saving planet top of mind

A MRSS Grade 12 student hopes to use a Loran Scholarship to develop alternative energy sources.

National Victims of Crime Awareness Week 2014

Alisa’s Wish Child-Focused Public Education Event

by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Fiddling and French and French fiddle music are just a few of things Annie Russell loves and is good at – she is also a speed skater and a volunteer assistant coach. But saving the planet as an engineer is what she’s planning to do with the rest of her life. The Maple Ridge Grade 12 student found out recently that she will be getting a hefty scholarship to help her pursue her dream to become an electrical engineer. “I’ve always been really interested in renewable energy and that’s really heating up now,” she said. Ultimately, she’d like to work with people who are trying to make alternative technology to fossil fuels. “We need to give an alternative to the fossil fuel industry because it has a cap on it – it’s going to run out eventually,” Annie said. Having grown up in Whonnock, Annie has always been surrounded by and lived near nature, something she values as integral to health. Her varied interest – in music, sports, and language – came into play in the rigorous interview process in mid February. The final interview portion for the Loran scholarship was a three-step process, and Annie described it as “quite intense.” There was a lot of discussion about how the different facets of the candidates’ life came together and their values. Only 30 high school students were chosen from a pool of 3,500 applicants from across Canada. One of the options Annie is looking

The Loran Scholarship is given out by the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation. It is worth $80,000 over four years and includes mentorship and a summer program.

See clear as day when you need to most!

The first avalanche rescue dog is featured in a children’s book. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

A Maple Ridge author has been educating kids on safety through a book featuring the first avalanche rescue dog in Canada. Radar the Rescue Dog, written by Janet Love Morrison, tells the story of three kids who get lost on Whistler Mountain, but the themes of the book resonate both on and off the mountain. Morrison has been presenting the book at ski areas from Whistler/ Blackcomb to Manning Park and at schools and libraries. She will be at the Maple Ridge Library in early May to talk to school groups about the book. The purpose of the book, which tells a fictional story but features the very real Radar, the first avalanche rescue dog, was to teach safety both on and off the mountain – and not to give in to peer pressure. The feedback Morrison has received from teachers and parents has been positive and shows that kids are getting the message. “This is teaching kids to stand in their power,” she said. One mother, an Asian immigrant, was so grateful about the information since her children are taking part in a skiing program at school. As new Canadians, the mother said they don’t know anything about ski culture, Morrison explained.

Radar the Rescue Dog is written by Janet Love Morrison and illustrated by Zuzana Riha Driediger. It includes a forward by Justin Trudeau. The idea is to teach kids mountain safety when they are young, just like they are taught about the dangers of water, electricity, and fire. Thousands of dollars go into saving lost people through various search and rescue crews including Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue. In addition, ski facilities have ski rescue crews that are called upon when someone is lost – often out of bounds. Morrison wanted the book to be an education piece, and said anyone going skiing or into the mountains should get educated, take available courses on mountain safety, have the proper equipment, have a mentor, and think their trip through before heading out.

The kids who come to her interactive sessions about the book and mountain safety – and about standing up to pressure – understand the message, Morrison said. “It’s been magic to see the intent has worked,” she said. Two-thirds of the royalties of book sales will go to the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA). Justin Trudeau, the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, wrote the introduction to the book. His brother Michel was killed and never recovered after he was lost in an avalanche in November 1998. C y WATER MAIN FLUSHING

The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 3, 2014. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Folks are in for some high-flying thrills when the Action Sports Extreme Stunt Show comes to town in early May as part of the Ridge Meadows Home Show. World-class rider and pro with more than 25 years of BMX experience, Nate Berkheimer – who hails from Las Vegas but now makes Maple Ridge his home – is one of the organizers for the freestyle show and is lining up some top-calibre talent to send the stunt show over the top. Freestyle riders, world champion racers, and up-and-coming pros from the Lower Mainland, Kelowna, and Ontario will give fans an upclose look at some of the best aerials and stunts in the extreme sport of BMX. “The general public rarely gets to see freestyle shows with this many top action sports athletes. We will be sure to put on a great show and leave no one disappointed,” said Berkheimer. The roster includes Liam Wallace, Corey Walsh, Travis Sexsmith, Jared Ennis, Ryan Tougas, Berkheimer and more guest riders. This is the first year the home show will be hosting the Action Sports Extreme Stunt Show. “We will have a big air BMX jump section, a full-size halfpipe, a cyclecross track, and an entry level BMX course, as well as a fleet of demo bikes for kids of all ages and skill levels to try out our sport,” Berkheimer explained.
