Catching a glimpse of daffodils – whether it be in his garden or growing wild near the side of the road – sparks memories of his mother. It’s been a little more than two years since Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin lost his

mother to cancer, but whenever he sees the symbolic flowers, they still evoke both fond and sad thoughts of his family’s matriarch. That’s why Daykin was quick to agree to be part of a special TIMES tribute section – being facilitated through the newspaper’s website and Facebook page – to acknowledge the people we’ve lost to cancer, as well as to those who have survived. April is recognized as the key fundraising month for the Canadian Cancer Society, in part through the sale of cut daffodils, as well as daffodil pins.

Daykin encourages people to dig deep – and not just at this time of year – to help fund the society and all its efforts in patient services and treatment research. He also applauded The TIMES for the community forum that will allow local residents to publicly acknowledge and remember those they’ve lost or those still fighting the disease. In his case, he’s chosen to remember his mother June (born June Clarke, 1926, in Edmonton, Alta.), who was diagnosed with leukemia in the summer of 2011.

Maple Ridge council is moving ahead with a plan to protect the District’s natural environment. The Environmental Management Strategy – which was accepted for information by council on Monday – includes three goals: conserving and managing natural assets, designing and building sustainable neighbourhoods, and improving communications and environmental awareness. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said he thinks the District should focus on things they’ve done well for the environment, for example the way the District is being developed now compared to in the past. For example, protecting waterways is much improved compared to past practices. “I think we’re doing a way better job at that than in the past,” he said. In addition, growth is restricted to certain areas, Albion and Silver Valley, Daykin said and density is being encouraged in the downtown core. One of the high-priority items recommended by the report is to create an environmental advisory committee.

Seventy-five-year-old Don Cabatoff enjoyed devouring his pancakes and coffee on Saturday. The Maple Ridge resident was just one of a number of people who took part in the recent volunteer appreciation breakfast in Pitt Meadows. And from Erin Mark’s perspective, the firstever volunteer appreciation breakfast in Pitt Meadows was a huge success. “We had probably around 200 people attend,” said Mark, the City’s centennial coordinator. Young, old, new, and long-time volunteers all came out to Boston Pizza Saturday, to enjoy a free breakfast as a thank you from the community for all they do. “Everybody has their own particular reason for volunteering,” Cabatoff said. His reason is personal. “I was married for many years, and my wife passed away last year,” he explained. After his wife’s death, people told Cabatoff he had to get out, get active, and meet people, otherwise he’d drive himself crazy. He saw something in the paper that said community services was looking for drivers that got him involved, initially. “I ended up saying, ‘I’d be happy to volunteer,’” he said.

Most trustees undecided about future

Two trustees on the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board, Kathy Marshall and Sarah Nelson, will not run again while the other five are still undecided. But the common thread for many trustees in considering whether to run or not is the lack of control they have in their trustee position. Trustees Eleanor Palis and Susan Carr are leaning toward re-election, and board chair Mike Murray and trustees Dave Rempel and Ken Clarkson have not made a decision yet. Nelson pointed out that school boards have no ability to

Chum Richardson’s Pitt Meadows roots go way back. So far in fact, he can remember when the only two paved roads were Harris Road and the Lougheed Highway. Richardson was born in 1937 in Vancouver, but raised in Pitt Meadows, and his connections to the area extend even further back. “My grandfather came across Canada from Ontario in the 1880s, and settled at the mouth of the Pitt River,” he said. She added that typical attendance to the event is usually around 100 people, but estimated this year saw “at least double that.”

The ACT was filled with leaders from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and Mission on Wednesday to hear about how postsecondary education would be possible in the area. The North Fraser Education Forum took place all day and included representatives from various provincial ministries – jobs, tourism, and skills training, education, social development and social innovation, advanced education, and tourism and small business. The keynote speaker, Mark Lee, had come from the Sioux Falls Chamber of

Commerce and he talked about how a multi-institutional university could work in the community. This would be an institute that is not a destination campus, rather it would be more focused on providing education to the workforce, Lee said. Lee said he felt, after talking to Sandy Blue at the economic development office, that this is the type of institute that might function well locally. The provincial government launched a community and employer partnership, along with the District of Maple Ridge and Invest North Fraser Economic Partners to help identify employment needs in the North Fraser region. At the forum, it was announced that the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation would provide $110,900 toward this labour market partnership.

Other priorities identified for implementation in the short term are updating the soil deposit, tree preservation, sustainable development practices, and giving more resources. The environment is “obviously important” to a lot of people in Maple Ridge, Daykin said, noting that surveys show residents like the community feel, access

to the outdoors, and the rural aspect of the District. “That all rolls into that natural environment,” he said. Daykin would like to see a focus on easily attainable things like the soil and tree bylaws and the advisory committee. District staff will come back at a later date with an implementation strategy for council.

Try to survive Easter roads It’s spring… almost. Technically, spring started nearly a month ago, and Easter is traditionally a time to officially recognize the changing of the seasons. Just look at proofs of spring springing up all around you: the plants know it, the bugs and the birds know it… but the roads don’t. And the weather remains unsure. It’s not always so bad around these parts in the Lower Mainland, but Easter, in addition to introducing spring, also tends to kick off the family road-trip season. It means that the roads can be busy and crowded, while at the same time, they can quickly and unexpectedly shift back into winter conditions, especially if you’re journeying outside the relatively wet and mild coastal climate zone. Get a read on the weather before you leave – and not just the local weather, but all the weather you may encounter between here and your destination. Don’t go into a potential snowstorm unprepared. Make sure your vehicle – which may not have been subjected to the rigours of a long trip since last fall – is prepared for the road ahead. Check the engine oil, washer fluid, and lights, and make sure your vehicle’s tires, including the spare, are in good condition and properly inflated. And remember that many parts of B.C. can’t be accessed without crossing mountain passes that require snow tires until April 30. Then there’s the usual stuff that applies anywhere, anytime. Ensure you’re well rested for the drive, and prepared so you don’t end up in an unnecessary hurry. Turn off the cellphone, no drinking and driving, stop to eat, and pay attention to the road. Also, remember that the warmer weather brings out more cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. Share the road courteously, and the dividend is less chance you or someone else will die. – B.G.

Ignored rules putting kids at risk

Dear Editor, My son attends Laity View Elementary and we live across the street from Westview Secondary. Our community is always concerned about traffic safety around schools. Over the past year, the traffic around both schools seems to have increased. Parents are ignoring “no parking” signs,

the community is ignoring the school zone speed limits, the municipality has failed to put in appropriate sidewalks around the high school, and parking rules around schools aren’t being enforced. It stands up there with other outrageous statements by Conservative MPs. Minister of citizenship, immigration, and multi-culturism Chris Alexander announced that “poverty has been eliminated in Canada.” How removed from reality is this government? Mr. Kamp doesn’t mention the one of five children living in poverty, or the 30,000 Canadians sleeping on the street, or the 16.2 per cent living in poverty, or seniors who are falling into poverty and debt, trying to keep their heads above water. This government has been playing a shell game: cutting transfer payments, social programs, medical, and anything else for the people, and diverting our tax dollars to subsidizing corporations. Any government can download taxes onto the provinces. I pay $35-$65 a month in bridge tolls (taxes) now, and the corporations get to pay literally nothing to use infrastructure that I pay for – and they exploit our resources for a pittance. Then Mr. Kamp has the nerve to say he has cut our taxes. If the middle class is surviving, it is only till they run out of credit, as Canadians owe more now than ever, just like Canada has the largest deficit in its history. Artists invited for residency Proposals are being accepted for a new project with the goal of exchanging between the community and artists.

Two spaces are available for the local artist in residence program. The artist in residence program in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is inviting all Canadian artistic teams and collectives in all disciplines – including writers, composers, visual artists, musicians, poets, choreographers, theatre artists, video, multi-disciplinary and performance artists – to submit proposals for two studio residencies. A two-year residency is being offered in the Osprey Village retail storefront in Pitt Meadows, and the other, a three-year-term is available at the Fern Crescent residence in Maple Ridge. Submissions can come from any part of B.C. or Canada. Organizers are looking for proposals for new projects that promote meaningful exchange between the community and artists and opportunities for the community to engage with the artistic process and production in some capacity. An open house session is scheduled for Monday, April 21, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Osprey Village studio storefront and from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Fern Crescent residence for artists to view the spaces and to have questions answered in person for this round of calls. Laura Goos was beaming with pride last week as she displayed her artwork at the Haney branch of RBC. Goos, who works every second Friday at the bank on 224th Street, has also been attending art classes at the Vicuna Art Studio in the Maple Meadows industrial park. Vicuna Art Studios, run by Maria Daley, holds art classes for people with developmental disabilities.

The art classes help build her students’ self-confidence and concentration skills and help with their motor skills as well. Daley has been running Vicuna in Maple Ridge since 2008, and before that had a painting and pottery studio in Burnaby. “Why not give the opportunity to express themselves as painters because many of them are non-vocal,” Daley said. Goos has been painting for about five years, and she said she enjoys it because of the colours and flowers she can paint. Janette Shaver is Goos’ supervisor at the bank. “We wanted to promote what the association does and of course display what Laura does because she works for us,” Shaver said, about the art at RBC.

he name might be new, but the store – and its owner – have a history in the community. The What-Not shop, owned by Paul Kvammen, is the re-birth of what many will remember as the CD Shack. Located at 22348 Lougheed Hwy., the store hasn’t moved too far from its original location of more than two decades. “The CD Shack had been across the street on this block for 21 years,” Kvammen explained. During that time he had a hand in running it, but was working mostly on tug boats, until an injury put him out of commission for a couple years. Now Kvammen is back in by Eric Zimmer business. Where the CD Shack focused primarily on music, the What-Not Shop is just that: a little bit of everything. “It just sort of happened,” said Kvammen of the transition. “When my son was born, I was walking down a store aisle looking for toys, and found a Hot Wheels collectible.” That set Kvammen’s wheels in motion, so to speak. “I decided to start buying collectibles, knowing that DVDs were kind of on the way out. It was sort of planned, and sort of spur of the moment,” he said. From that point, he started buying big collections, held on to them, and when he was ready to open the store, brought his collections in. The store is open from noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
