Dog owners growling at closure
Two petitions and a Facebook page have been launched, and now a rally is planned in an effort to keep canines off-leash at Volker Park.

Wayne Clark knows the importance of having a safe place for dogs to run free. It was a couple years ago that the Maple Ridge retiree lost a one-and-a-half year old puppy when she got out of her harness at Jerry Sulina Park and was hit by a car on Neaves Road. And this is a main reason Clark said that the Volker Park off-leash area should remain as it is. “Dogs have to have somewhere they can be let off leash,” he said. “Somewhere with a fence (like Volker) that they can’t just take off.” Clark is just one of a number of dog owners who object to the District’s plan to close the Volker Park off-leash area on June 10. Now, a Facebook page devoted to saving the off-leash area as well as two separate petitions are making the rounds in the community. “Losing a designated off-leash park will just mean more off-leash dogs in undesignated areas,” said Rebecca Lee. Lee is the creator of the Facebook page “Volker Dog Park Refugees.” She explained the idea for the page came from “the fact there was a bunch of rumours going on at the park, and no one really knew how to connect with one another.” Lee said the ultimate purpose of the page is to change the mind of the District and the parks commission and keep the off-leash park open. “The people who oppose the dog park have had their say, now we want ours.” She added that the page is also a response to the fact that “dog owners were never given a say, never knew anything, and never got the chance to say ‘hey, maybe we can compromise’.”

Park user Simon Matthews said he has been bringing his small dog to the park for three years and has met a number of the neighbours. “I’ve spoken with them, and they tell me they love seeing my dog,” he said. But parks facility director David Boag said complaints from neighbours regarding barking and noise levels were a key factor in the decision to close the park. “If it’s that big of an issue, why was there no bylaw noise warning, instead of a sudden closure?” asked Nancy Patrick, who’s also created a paper petition. “I’ve never been approached by a park
neighbour resident or seen any type of check on noise levels,” added Lee, who said she has been coming to the park for the past three years. She said a rally is now planned for May 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the park where people can come and show their opposition to the closure. Mayor Ernie Daykin acknowledged there has been some unhappiness and frustration by residents in the neighbourhood since the park opened, “in spite of the fact there was, what I believe, a fairly extensive process.” However, Stacey McKitch, a 17-year-
resident of the neighbourhood, doesn’t feel there was any consultation before the dog park went in. “We woke up one day to the erect posts and fences,” she said on Facebook. Daykin, who did not support the closure, pointed out that dogs will still be allowed at Volker once the fences are torn down – just on leashes. He also encouraged concerned dog owners to let their voices be heard. Kim Lauzon would like residents in Maple Ridge to be able to access affordable, local, sustainable food, and her dream is to open a food co-operative. For the past couple years, Lauzon has been holding fundraisers and connecting with likeminded people to make this dream a reality. And now she thinks she and those who have been working on the preliminary plan are at the point where they can start the practical planning. Three sisters and their relationships are the central theme of a play that balances comedy and tragedy, opening tonight (Thursday) at Hammond Community Centre. The Maple Ridge-based community theatre group, Emerald Pig Theatrical Society, is staging The Attic, The Pearls, and Three Fine Girls. The play is directed by Amy Starkey, who played Lady Macbeth in Emerald Pig’s Bard on the Bandstand production last summer. This is Starkey’s second time directing a play and her fourth season with Emerald Pig. Community theatre members often choose safe, mainstream theatre pieces to stage, but Starkey thinks the plays Emerald Pig chooses attracts actors from across the Lower Mainland.
“I think it’s because Emerald Pig chooses material that is a little out of the ordinary for community theatre,” Starkey said. The play was borne out of improv, written by Jennifer Brewin, Leah Cherniak, Ann-Marie Macdonald, Alisa Palmer, and Martha Ross. While the subject matter is serious, the death of a father, the nature of the play is comedic, even clownish, Starkey said, balancing comedy and tragedy. The play mines the sibling rivalry aspect of families to comic effect, Starkey said, but there are still “really poignant moments between the three [sisters],” she added. The three sisters closely mirror the three sisters in King Lear with the youngest, favoured daughter, and the two “mean” older sisters. There are also references to the three weird sisters from Macbeth. The play runs from May 1 to 3 and May 8 to 10 at 8 p.m. at Hammond Community Centre, 20601 Westfield Ave., Maple Ridge. Much like his predecessor Rev. William Burton Crickmer had to do back in 1859, the current day minister at St. John the Divine Church in Maple Ridge has to get out in the community and work hard to draw potential parishioners in to his Anglican church. Admittedly, Rev. Charles Balfour doesn’t have to stand on a barrel in the middle of a “wild west” town preaching to guntoting trailblazers of Derby [now Fort Langley]. There was concern by the church authorities in England over the spiritual welfare of the suddenly booming population in this gold rush town, so Crickmer was sent in 1859 and the Lower Mainland’s first church was erected. Of course, the boom in this region was short-lived, and Derby was all but vacated. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then… in fact, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge are now served by two new bridges that are sure to have an increasingly important economic role in the development of our communities: the new and improved Pitt River Bridge, and the long-promised and still relatively shiny Golden Ears Bridge that has opened a new access across the Fraser River to Langley and Surrey and beyond. A lot of figurative water has passed under the bridge for your community newspaper, too. The TIMES began with a mission to serve the community. Granted, there have been many changes through the years – for instance, the Internet was barely a twinkle in the eye of some very progressive and forwardthinking university professors when that first edition of the TIMES came off the press, and now our online edition and social media sites are important to our communication with our readers. But our commitment to serve Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows with a fair and honest reflection of the communities and the people who depend on us to keep them informed has been unwavering throughout our nearly three decades on your doorsteps and online. Dog owners denied rebuttal
Dear Editor, As a taxpayer in Maple Ridge, I am flabbergasted at the apparent lack of process in the parks comto missioners’ decision to close the the off-leash dog area at Volker Park. It was reported the commissioners received a compelling presentation on why the dog area should be closed. At this point, a democratic governing body should ask the public for input, after which a decision can then fairly be made. The biggest complaint seems to be barking from the dogs. When I’ve been at the park, most of the noise is from the kids in the park and the neighboring elementary school. Children and dogs playing in a park! Ya! We’ve got to stop that, and can’t allow input from the public.
As a new dog owner who has not had a dog for about 15 years, I have been impressed that most dog owners respect the leash law and utilize the off-leash parks. If off-leash parks are not available, dog owners will be forced to find other ways to exercise their dogs, which may not be acceptable to all the parties. As a retiree, I have the time and resources to travel outside my community. Many others do not. I will have to travel further, because I feel gated dog parks offer protection to my pet and give owners a place where they can legally exercise their dogs. Species at Risk Act
Whales’ redesignation conservation victory
Dear Editor, Your editorial wrongly suggests the recent designation of the North Pacific humpback whale was not based on sound science [Whale status about tankers, April 24 Our View, TIMES]. When assessing species under the Species at Risk Act (SARA), our government relies on the expert advice of the independent Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). In the case of the humpback whale, based on significant growth of the population in recent years, COSEWIC advised the government that it no longer met the criteria of “threatened,” and should be upgraded to “of special concern.” This is an important milestone in the recovery of the species, and it shows the

I can assure Canadians that, as a species of special concern, the humpback whale population will continue to benefit from conservation measures outlined in the management plan required by SARA, and the Fisheries Act and the Marine Mammal Regulations will continue to apply. In addition, the Government of Canada’s recently announced world-class tanker safety system increases the environmental safeguards and protection mechanisms in place, to ensure an increase in tanker traffic can be safely accommodated. Emmeline Mohun was one of the first female landowners in B.C. And this weekend, a park named after her will open in Hammond where she owned 555 acres in the late 1800s. “It was unusual [for property] to be in a woman’s name,” said Sylvia Pendl, with parks and leisure services, about the historical time. The new park, at 20208 Wharf St., was an empty lot just a year ago, before the District of Maple Ridge cleared away the blackberry brambles and other growth and built the park. The ceremony to officially open Emmeline Mohun (pronounced “Moon”) Park takes place from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 3 with a drumming ceremony attended by local dignitaries. The ceremony will be followed by refreshments and a wishing tree activity.

1 whole pineapple, core removed and cut into 8 spears 1 tbsp canola oil
1. On a charcoal/wood BBQ: light your natural lump charcoal and set up your BBQ for indirect cooking. Preheat and maintain a cooking temperature of 400 degrees F. 2. Oil both sides of the chicken thighs with 1 tbsp of the canola oil and then season with Meridian brand House Seasoning. 3. Place chicken thighs skin side up on the grill and close the lid. Close the lid and cook for 3 to 5 more minutes to caramelize the sauce onto the skin. 5. Remove the chicken and let rest. Important Changes to the Provincial Recycling Program Effective May 2014, the BC Government, through changes to the Recycling Regulation, requires producers of packaging and printed paper (PPP) products to be responsible for its collection and processing. Multi-Material BC (MMBC) is a non-profit organization created to represent producers of PPP. Its mandate is to arrange for the necessary programs to recycle PPP, which include most products recycled through Pitt Meadows’ curbside program, with a few exceptions and additions.
Changes to recycling curbside collection include the addition of: • Polycoated boxboard (cereal boxes) • Paper cups • Polycoated milk & milk substitute cartons • Aseptic containers • Multi – laminate paper packaging • Rigid plastic SPI codes #3 (PVC), #6 (polystyrene) and #7 other • Steel and aluminum aerosol cans • Spiral wound cans (steel ends of frozen juice cans) • Bimetal containers/aerosols However, the following items will no longer be accepted and must be returned to your local drop off depot: • Refundable containers • Paperback and hardcover books • Plastic bags • Glass Please continue to follow instructions in the Curbside Calendar. Two shows on Saturday will feature beloved hits from Broadway musicals, put on by SPECC-tacular Productions, a local community musical theatre troupe. Music from Les Miserables, The King and I, Oklahoma!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Miss Saigon, Chicago, and Phantom of the Opera have been pulled together in a production called Nights on Broadway. There will be four numbers from each musical with narration providing background information about the Broadway shows. The range of musicals being featured gives a variety of older and more modern Broadway shows, explained Ed Marshall, director of the show. Broadway musicals are appealing to a broad audience, Marshall said, which is evident by their long runs. SPECC-tacular Productions puts on three musicals a year. The group is made up of a core group with both professional and amateur experience, including

Ed Marshall, Ruth Dallas Rich, Jennifer Geddes, and Su Wolfe will perform twice on Saturday in a show that features Broadway musical numbers. Marshall who has been doing amateur musical theatre for years. “I love musical theatre – it’s got so much to offer,” Marshall said. “Every show is different, every show tells a different story.” In addition to the eight performers at Nights on Broadway, there will be four dancers from Maple Ridge Dance Circle and a six-member choir. The performers will also be wearing costumes from each of the seven shows – gowns and tuxedos for Phantom, Vietnamese and marine costumes for Miss
Saigon, bright colours for Joseph, cocktail wear for the King and I, French revolution style for Les Miserables, and flapper style for Chicago. In December, SPECCtacular Productions puts on a Christmas pantomime, and these two shows are a fundraiser for that production. Concert boosts parade
An event this Saturday will help fund local Christmas festivities.
It’s a bit of Christmas in May. Maple Ridge Christmas Festival Society is holding a fundraiser this Saturday to raise money for its annual parade in early December. The concert, at the Ridge Meadows Seniors Activity Centre, features the Maple Leaf Singers and fiddler Jesse Kazimir. The 18-year-old Kazimir has been fiddling for about 11 years, and used to belong to the North Shore Celtic Ensemble. Although he’s a full-time engineering student at SFU, he still keeps up with his fiddling on the side, and will play at Saturday’s concert. “Music... I’ve decided to keep as a hobby,” he said. Kazimir plays mainly Celtic music, and the tunes he’ll be playing include Rattlin’ Roarin’ Willie and Calliopy and Frank. But he’ll also be playing medleys that he’s put together himself. The Maple Leaf Singers, led by music director Wilson Fowlie, is one of

They have an eclectic repertoire, which includes a song about the Royal Hudson steam train, composed by Maple Ridge’s David Baker. Track team victorious after 15 years

It was down to the eleventh hour – literally, for the Maple Ridge Secondary Track team in Chehalis, Wash. this past weekend. For the past 15 years, the team has made the annual trek down to the Evergreen State city to take part in an annual two- day tournament. “Friday is the biggest meet,” explained coach Ken Elphick. “But there’s also a meet on Saturday as well.” And this year, after a full day of competition on Friday, with solid results from both the boys’ and girls’ teams, four female

The win gave the school its first-ever victory at the event.
The team had been competing all day, and due to participation numbers,
races continued right into the evening. “The final race was at 11:55 p.m., “ explained coach Ken Elphick. In a race that he siad is now known as the Midnight Express, Grade 8 competitors Brontey Elphick-Miner, twins Brooke and Blythe Parry, and Emily Morley pulled off a victory in the 4 X 400 metre race. Athletes from Grade 8 through 12 all took part in the event, and Elphick called the team “a great group.” He also credited the talent of the younger students giving an extra push to the older, veteran team members as a key to their success. On Saturday, the team posted a solid fourth-place finish in the second meet, and Elphick said overall everyone competed well.

Polo teams earns top spots at provincials

Not one, but two top finishes were the name of the game for two different Maple Ridge high schools this past weekend. Garibaldi and Maple Ridge Secondary Schools’ water polo teams made the short trip across the bridge to Coquitlam this weekend, and competed in the B.C. Water Polo Association provincial high school championships. The event took place at the City Centre Aquatics complex, and both schools brought their Agame. MRSS took third spot overall in the province, and rookie player Kealen Osmond, as well as the offensive work of Grade 8 student

Just ahead of them in second place was where Garibaldi Secondary found themselves when all was said and done. “We had two standout Grade 12 players,” said Garibaldi’s teacher sponsor Antony Cowie. The standout pair was comprised of Virginia Smith and Giordano Marconato, who Cowie noted had also represented Canada on the national team. “It’s great to play with that calibre of talent,” he said. “Being in Grade 12, this is sort of their last hurrah with Garibaldi as well.” Though they finished just shy of first, Cowie said this should in no way diminish what they did accomplish. “I’m happy and proud of the team’s performance,” he said. Lorna Semple of Maple Ridge held a copy of her hometown newspaper, The TIMES, in front of the Opera House, Teatro Amazonas, in Manaus, Brazil recently. Manaus is 1,400 kilometres up the Amazon River from the Atlantic Ocean, and the opera house in the background was built during the height of the rubber plantation era in 1896, with everything imported by boat from Europe, Semple explained. The paved driveway, for instance, is actually made from rubber so the horses hooves would not make any noise during the shows. As a further part of her history lesson, Semple learned that the dome has 36,000 ceramic tiles painted in colours of the flag of Brazil.

Tapestry artist Barbara Heller has been steadily gaining acclaim for her contribution to the contemporary tapestry scene since commencing her studio practice at the Fibre Art Studio, Granville Island in 1979. The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is honoured to be able to present works signifying key moments in her career that are often linked to war, political aggression and the impact of humankind on the environment. Despite the apparent ‘fall from grace’ underlying many of her works, there are also suggestions of redemption, and it is Heller’s intention that transcendence should prevail in the longer view.
