Mounties targeting bad drivers
RCMP pinch high-risk drivers who don’t pay attention to the road or are too heavy on the gas pedal. by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@mrtimes.com
Mounties are watching for speeders and distracted motorists as part of a campaign to clamp down on high-risk driving behaviours during the month of May. On May 8, Ridge Meadows RCMP Traffic Services, along with the Speed Watch volunteer group and ICBC Road Safety, were out on local roads looking for high-risk drivers. “Our goal is to make the streets in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows among the safest in the world,” Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Mike Moore said during a recent enforcement blitz along Lougheed Highway.

Maple Ridge Councillor Michael Morden said he would never have believed getting something built in the Albion Flats would take so long. But a process initiated by SmartCentres almost two years ago to swap its farmland in Albion for District-owned land, continues to be negotiated. Speeders: Only part of problem …continued from page A1
ICBC statistics show that more than 40 per cent of all crashes are a result of some form of high-risk driving, such as failing to yield, speeding, following too closely, or ignoring a traffic control device. “It takes longer than you think to complete a lefthand turn, especially at a busy intersection. Many crashes from high-risk resulted in a serious injury, or a fatality,” Moore said. “In May all police in B.C. will enhance overall road safety by enforcing all traffic laws, concentrating on aggressive driving infractions.” Const. Ron Trimm stood on Lougheed Highway, in front of Frogstone Grill at the top of Telosky Hill, and in short order he handed out three speeding tickets. The first two drivers had the same excuse. “I think they were both going to work,” Trimm said. “One thought the zone was a 60 [km/h], and she was doing 81.” At that point, the fastest speed Trimm had clocked

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. High school and elementary students could be seen walking outside Garibaldi Secondary on Friday carrying jugs of water. The water walk was organized by the Rebels for a Cause – a group of students who meet weekly at Garibaldi Secondary and are described as “shameless idealists” and “leaders of change” by group member Sara Stanley. The walk was to raise money for a water well in Ecuador. The group is also raising money to build a classroom in that country as well. “The water well will
be built through Free the Children, providing a sustainable option for clean drinking water,” Stanley explained. “Clean drinking water lessens the spread of disease and illnesses.” Rebels for a Cause have a strong relationship with the organization Free the Children and have previously raised money for a school classroom in Sierra Leone. Dozens of Garibaldi students took part in Friday’s water walk, carrying fourlitre milk jugs filled with water around the track behind the school. They were joined by 16 students from Harry Hooge Elementary who had also raised money. The students were also joined by local emergency personnel. “Dedicated to a profession that values water, local firefighters made an appearance walking among the students with

Our View
Denial time running out For years we’ve been told that climate change is going to be the unfortunate legacy we leave to our children. But it turns out now that we don’t have to wait that long. A new report by more than 300 top scientists has made clear that climate change is already here. Although meteorologists point out that weather is not climate, most adults can’t help but be struck by the remarkable changes in temperatures, seasons, and unusual weather patterns, discernible to even non-scientists, that have occurred in our lifetimes. As the report makes clear, the changes are borne out by science. They are caused by human activity generating greenhouse gases, and they are happening more quickly than predicted. Most of the effects are extremely detrimental. They include increasing numbers of hurricanes and tornadoes, heavy rains in some parts of North America, and drought in others. On the West Coast, reduced snow pack, rising sea levels and ocean acidification, storm surges, and forest infestations are just some of the challenges likely to get worse in the future. Those West Coast scallops you love? Kiss them goodbye. The coastal waters have become too acidic for them. The question remains, what are we willing to do about it? Despite widespread acknowledgement of concern, Canada’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions remain inadequate. Oil and gas production is one of our country’s largest contributors to the problem. Yet our government largely refuses to recognize it, much less move to mitigate it in any realistic way. This latest report makes it clear, however, that the time to act is now. Because a dramatically altered planet will soon be everyone’s problem. – Glacier Media

Kamp’s assurances not reassuring
Dear Editor, How gullible does MP Randy Kamp [Whales’ redesignation conservation victory, May 1 Letters, TIMES] think British Columbians are? The Conservative government dismissed scientists whose findings were contrary to its agenda. Volker Park
Process was dismantled
Dear Editor, Whilst the train travelled through my personal and private District of Maple Ridge at 6:55 this morning, I was awoken by its whistle. I would like to appear before the Parks and Leisure Services commission with a handful of my neighbours to present a recording of the whistle being blown outside the Maple Ridge noise bylaw hours. I will ask the commission to vote on dismantling the train track, because it is placing an unreasonable burden on me. I have also started to lay dangerous objects across the train tracks to scare anyone who dares use the train tracks in my town. For this, I hope to be rewarded by a rushed vote, without any consultation with the train companies. Does this scenario make any more sense than the compelling video footage the commission voted on to dismantle Volker Dog Park? Where was the commission’s rationale during that process? My guess is it was dismantled. Should we dismantle children’s voice boxes next? P. Justus, Maple Ridge [Note: A fuller version of this letter and others on this topic are online at www. mrtimes.com. Xtreme Theatre, a group of home-schooled students, is putting on a musical set in the 1850s’ wild west.

Theatre
Students stage old-fashioned tale
Home-schooled students are putting on their second production this spring. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
An old-fashioned tale from the old west comes to life at The ACT as Xtreme Theatre puts on a production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The theatre group, made up of youth who are home-schooled, will stage its annual production, this time set in Oregon in the 1850s. Xtreme Theatre just staged its junior production of Willy Wonka with younger students – this time the older students will put on the musical about a group of “tough, strong, backwoods men” who want to find wives for themselves, explained Xtreme Theatre’s founder Wendy Holm. There are 21 main actors – seven brides, seven brothers, and seven
suitors – in the musical Holm described as “a lot of fun.” “There’s something for everybody – it’s funny, it’s romantic, it’s a good story,” Holm said. The musical production needed elaborate sets for the play – even bigger than Peter Pan, which they
staged two years ago – and the parents have once again come through with their volunteer efforts, said Holm. The costumes have also required a lot of work, Holm said, with the brides and the brothers colourcoordinated. This is the 15th year Xtreme Theatre has been putting on shows, starting first at the Terry Fox Theatre in Coquitlam and then moving to The ACT as they outgrew their first venue. Holm hopes to stay involved as long as she can, saying she likes to “see the children come at age five and watch their journey in theatre.” Next year, Xtreme Theatre plans to have three groups doing theatre, Holm said, with groups aged five to eight, nine to 13, and 14 to 18. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers started on Wednesday and continues tonight, Friday, and Saturday (May 15-17) at 7 p.m. with a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m. For more information, go to www.xtremetheatre.ca.
Education
Students receive arts council scholarships The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Arts Council gave five Grade 12 students in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows scholarships of $1,000 each. Selection was based on a combination of demonstrated artistic impression,
technical skill and level of presentation, grades, a personal resume, and planned attendance at a post-secondary institution. The recipients are Nicholas Renaud from Maple Ridge Secondary for music, Jackie Her from
Thomas Haney Secondary for visual/media arts, Rachel Weir from Pitt Meadows Secondary for literary arts, Kimberly Dyer from Meadowridge School for dance, and Adrianna Marchand also from Meadowridge for
drama/technical theatre. “It is an inspiration to see the next generation of artists pursuing a career in their chosen art,” said arts council board member Korleen Carreras.

Westview prepares for playoffs
After a loss in their final regular season game, the senior rugby squad squares off against Surrey today. f
by Eric Zimmer
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
The Westview Secondary senior boys rugby squad will play their first playoff game today, despite losing their final regular season game to Coquitlam’s Charles Best Secondary. The last game of the season was back-and-forth for both teams. An early try in the game propelled Best to a 5-0 lead. However, Westview quickly answered back with a converted try, and then another unconverted try. By halftime, Westview led the game 12-5. In the second half, Best came within two points of Westview’s lead. However, Westview took a penalty in front of the posts 25 metres out, which resulted in a one point lead for Best. With just 10 minutes left in the game, Westview was able to score again, putting them in front by four points. Best continued to keep the pressure on Westview though, and scored their try on the last play of the game, giving them the win by a single point. “We got ahead, but kind of let up a bit,” said Westview teachersponsor Pat Glover. “It was a really solid effort on
Chung Chow/Glacier Media
There was hard-hitting action in the final regular-season game between the Westview Secondary and Charles Best rugby teams. the part of both teams, and it was an exciting game to watch.” Glover added it was easy to see how much both teams wanted to close out the season with a win. The team finished the season in fourth place – good enough to squeak them into the playoffs. “The top four teams make it,” said Glover. Now it’s time for the team to focus on the series, which
they kick off in Surrey against Fleetwood Park. “They’re a tough team,” noted Glover. Looking back on the season, Glover credited the Grade 12 players with “stepping up their game” and taking on leadership roles both on and off the field. He pointed to Damien Wilson, Stuart Sabyan, and Teagen Saunders as leaders on the team.
“These guys have been outstanding,” he said. “Everyone’s enthusiastic about the sport.” He also credited the work of coach Keith Richert, as well as Kimberley Carlisle – a woman he said basically takes care of everything else. They were, Glover said, instrumental to the success of the team this year.
Burrards
Journey to provincial team spot no picnic A Burrards player’s selection to Team B.C. is just one of a number of notable events for the lacrosse association. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
It was a big and busy weekend for the Ridge Meadows Burrards lacrosse organization. On Saturday, both the midget A1 and A2 teams took part in the third annual Barn Burner tournament, hosted at Planet Ice. After winning all the round robin games, the A1 team lost to Coquitlam to secure the silver. The A2 squad took top spot in their division after a victory over Coquitlam. The tournament also featured a skills competition, which included a shootout, with standout performances from Burrards’ goalies Nate Faccin and Nick Heron.
In the bantam league, three Ridge Meadows Minor Lacrosse Association players, Dylan McCormick, Aidan Murphy, Gavin Bruce, and goalie Matt Marty, were recognized among the top 30 bantam lacrosse players in B.C. The recognition came after the four tried out for the Team B.C. Box lacrosse squad. Only McCormick was chosen for the provincial position, though. However, just getting to the tryouts is an accomplishment in itself. Players typically try out for the team when they are a second-year player of their division. Before prospects can try out, they must first attend a regional tryout, to secure their spot on a regional team. In the case of the Burrards, this means a spot on Team Fraser Valley. Once a spot has been secured, players must then attend a threeday camp, consisting of fitness

National track meet
Track teams bring A-game to Toronto Teams from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows successfully competed on the national stage. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Ridge’s Erik Herbranson took his turn pitching at the Alberta tourney.
Baseball
Ridge ball represented Three former local minor baseball players took part in a championship tournament in Alberta.
Monique Lisek got a nice taste of her future home this past weekend. The Grade 12 student at Maple Ridge Secondary was part of a select pair of track teams from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Secondary schools who took part in the Nike High School Grand Prix – a national track meet held in Toronto on May 9. But Lisek did more than just simply participate.
The Maple Ridge track team captain walked away with four gold medals, and helped to solidify her squad’s success. “I work well under pressure,” she said. Her teammate, Natalie Rycroft, took top spot in the girls’ high jump competition, with a jump of 1.51 metres – a personal best for Rycroft. “It’s amazing,” she said. “I came expecting great things, but I got so much more.” The team won the title of “Girls Champions” for the invitational. “I’m so proud our team is doing so well,” said Lisek. “I’ve been team captain for the last couple of years, and it’s awesome to see our girls improving.”

The Canadian College Baseball Conference Championship in Lethbridge, Alta., had its share of former Ridge Meadows minor baseball players present. Justin Pilgrim of the champion Prairie Baseball Academy (PBA) Dawgs, along with Erik Herbranson and Malcolm Upton of the second-place Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolfpack, all played for the RMMBA, and were all part of last week’s championships.

Maple Ridge’s Helen Laity recently toured the Golden Triangle in Jaipur, India, and had her photograph taken – naturally, holding a copy of her hometown newspaper, The TIMES – in front of the Palace of the Winds or Hawa Mahal. It’s a pink and red sandstone, five-storey building constructed in the centre of the city in 1799 as an extension of the Royal City Palace. It’s in the shape of a pyramid with almost 1,000 windows from which the royal women were said to peer out at everyday life. It’s now the city’s prime tourist attraction.
