Fresh produce and handcrafted items, along with live music and visits from community groups – this is what locals have enjoyed at the Haney Farmers Market for 10 years. Eileen Dwillies, who manages the market with her husband Paul, said after the five-year mark, she knew the market was a success, and she’s pleased that it has “thrived” over its 10 years of existence. The market’s first focus is farmers and making sure their produce is available to marketgoers. The second is prepared food vendors, and, thirdly, the large variety of crafters who sell their wares at the weekly market. Dwillies likes to book different kinds of crafters at the weekly market, for example, a card maker one week and a wood turner the next, to showcase local talent. “I think our public needs to see how creative Maple Ridge is,” she said. Every week community groups also come out the market – last week Fraserview Art Group members were displaying their pieces in the bandstand. Other groups coming to the market this year include the Maple Ridge Museum, library with storytime sessions, the seniors’ Variety Plus dancers, and the Garibaldi Art Club. The Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association partners with the market and four times per season, its members can join the farmers market at the BIA Summer Market. The farmers market adds

Ridge Business Improvement Association. “It’s definitely something we really like to see because it brings people to the downtown [area],” Boekhorst said. In their surveys, downtown businesses have asked for more events and options to make it attractive for shoppers, Boekhorst said. Haney Farmers Market will continue almost every Saturday until Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. at Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge. Exceptions will be July 12 (during the Caribbean Festival) when the market will be at Haney Plaza where Liquidation World is located, and Aug. 9 when the market is at Brooksfield Farm, 20981 123rd Ave., Maple Ridge. Starting Oct. 18, the market will be at Grow and Gather, at 24565 Dewdney Trunk Rd., until Nov. 15.

Pickets signs will be up at Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows schools next Tuesday and school will not be in session. The one-day strikes across the province constitute the second phase of job action. The BCTF announced rotating strikes for school districts around the province – one day per district next week – and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district will be picketed on May 27. MRTA president George Serra said the union is proposing a 10 1/2 per cent wage increase over four years with some costof-living increases, bringing it up to Marc Dalton about 12 to 13 per cent. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Serra said teachers in B.C. are behind teachers across the country in regards to salary, and their proposals wouldn’t bring them into alignment but “it would be a good step.” The union also wants to negotiate class size and composition, but Serra said the government is refusing to negotiate these issues. The government is appealing a ruling by the courts earlier this year that class size and composition has to be brought back to 2002 levels. Marc Dalton, MLA for Maple RidgeMission, said the government is appealing the court ruling because the class size and composition issues were addressed with more than $200 million for the Learning Improvement Fund (LIF) – $100 million earmarked for this year. “We feel we’ve met the concerns [with

the LIF],” he said, adding that the fund is not “loose change” The government is doing “what we can” in regards to education and the bargaining offers. “We’re living within our means and that’s tough,” he said, calling the rotating strikes “really unfortunate.” “I understand it’s a part of bargaining,” Dalton said, adding that “my concern is that kids suffer.” Dalton said his government ran for office “on a balanced budget,” and that there are a lot of needs in the province. Dalton said he also would like to see more George Serra funding for education. MRTA president “We are doing the best we can with what we have,” he said. The BCTF, in a written statement, said that “any extension of the rotating job action will depend on events at the bargaining table.” Laurie Meston, acting superintendent with the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, sent a letter to parents asking them to keep their children at home on Tuesday. “While school facilities will remain open under the supervision of school district administration during the day of the strike, we will be unable to provide students with instruction or appropriate supervision on this day,” she said in the letter. School buses won’t be running and StrongStart Centres will be closed. Almost 30,000 teachers across the province cast ballots in the strike vote, and 89 per cent voted in favour of the two-phased job action. “Teachers do not take job action of any kind lightly,” said Jim Iker, the president of the BCTF. “Teachers are committed to reaching a fair deal at the negotiating table that respects our work and provides better supports for our students,” Iker added.

Correction
Some of the names and faces in last Thursday’s “Hot Button Issues,” featuring taxation, didn’t match. A misstep in the newsroom proof-reading protocol resulted in the errors in our print edition, and for a while, on line. For those who were puzzled by the discrepancies, the comments matched the faces in all cases (if not the names). The corrected feature, with names and face appropriately connected, can now be found on line at www.mrtimes.com, search “Hot Button”.

Recycling changes add options Ridge Meadows Recycling will continue its curbside pickup program in Maple Ridge without many changes. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Province-wide changes to recycling that came into effect this week won’t affect Maple Ridge residents, except they can add a few more items to their weekly curbside pickup. Maple Ridge is one of many communities that signed on to the new Multi-Material B.C. program, but council wanted to ensure the new system would be seamless for its residents, said Kim Day, executive director of the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society.
“They didn’t want to see any impact [on] service levels,” Day said. The society is in charge of the curbside recycling pickup, and Day pointed out that the only changes residents will see is that is they can add more items, for example, large catalogues and phone books, aerosol cans, Tetrapaks, frozen juice packages, and all types of plastic. While some communities are no longer accepting glass as it can contaminate other recycling – shards of glass that gets mixed with plastic or paper make these products unusable – Maple Ridge will continue to collect glass in blue boxes. Residents had to pay $2 per bag for styrofoam until Monday, but when the MMBC program kicked in, this dropoff item became free

of charge. The recycling program has also been expanded to accept all types of plastic, labelled from numbers one to seven. In the past, the recycling depot had to pay to get rid of certain kinds of plastic that were harder to recycle, but with the new MMBC program in place, producers of packaging are now paying for the plastic they use with their products. The new program will take time to roll out province-wide, and some changes might come over time, Day said. “It’s a huge undertaking – it’s a province-wide undertaking,” she said. But most changes are more behind-the-scenes in communities like Maple Ridge, with minimal impact to local residents. The MMBC program is shifting the onus of paying for packaging and recycling onto producers of these materials. While in Ontario, the cost of recycling is split fifty-fifty between producers of packaging and the municipal governments, “the theory behind the B.C. program is producers are supposed to be paying 100 per cent of the cost,” Day said. The Ridge Meadows Recycling Society’s large, supported work program for people with developmental delays will not change with the new MMBC program in place, Day said.
Maria Rantanen/TIMES
Kiefer O’Hanley, a swamper with Ridge Meadows Recycling, was collecting recyclables on Wednesday in Haney. Residents shouldn’t see many changes to their recycling program despite a new province-wide program being in place.

An annual walk highlights a disease that two local girls struggle with. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
For Emily Bateson and Melissa PowellDavis, everyday life is about taking medicine, monitoring their sugar, taking pills, and staying healthy. The girls, who are cousins, both have cystic fibrosis, along with 4,000 other people across Canada. On Sunday, their families are organiz-
ing the annual Great Strides Walk in Pitt Meadows to raise awareness about the disease and perhaps raise some money for research and finding a cure. The walk is 2.5 kilometres long and starts at the south end of Harris Road at about 10 a.m. There will be facepainting and prizes and refreshments and the public is invited to come support those struggling with CF. There is no cost to the walk but Bateson and Lockett will collect donations toward Cystic Fibrosis Canada at the walk. Donations can also be made online at www.cysticfibrosis.ca.

Our View
Best friend best at home
Last week’s deaths of six family pets – in Richmond, as it turned out, and not at a dog park in Langley – serves as a tragic reminder of how quickly a closed vehicle under a hot sun can become an inescapably deadly trap for dogs. Indeed, it doesn’t even take a particularly hot sun – and leaving the windows “open a crack” offers little mitigation. Furthermore, no amount of water is sufficient to stave off heat exhaustion and death when temperatures inside the vehicle – much hotter than outside temperatures – climb to unbearable levels in only minutes. If you’re skeptical, park your car, turn off your air conditioner and roll up the windows… and see how quickly you decide you need to throw open the door. See if opening the window “a crack” makes much difference. Now imagine the same exercise while wearing an overcoat. And consider that, if you were a dog, you would have little access to a natural cooling system that works particularly well for humans – you’d only be able to sweat from the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. Panting is your only other means of expelling heat from your body. And your dog can’t open the door. If you must take your pet out for a ride, always be on guard for signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, uncharacteristic anxiety, unusual salivation, muscle tremors, and in more severe cases, vomiting, loss of coordination, convulsions, or collapse. If you see any of those symptoms, your dog may be in severe distress. Get him out of the car, cool him with water, especially let him lick something cold, like ice cream (but don’t put ice on his skin, as that actually slows cooling by reducing the blood supply to his extremities), and get him to a veterinarian. Better still, just leave him at home, and if that makes you feel guilty, reward him with a treat when you return. – B.G.

Tourists pass gas potential
Dear Editor, Stewart Muir of the Resource Works Society tells us that if we want to prosper, we need to get behind Premier Christy Clark’s LNG plans, because in a single 10-year span, gas earned B.C. $11 billion. Really? In just one year, 2002/2003, B.C.’s tourism industry brought in $9.3 billion of revenue, 22.6 million visitors to the province, and 114,272 tourism-related jobs. Which industry produces more bang for the buck? Both would be nice, but we can’t provide gas safely to China at this point, so I suggest we stick with tourism. Cheryl Baron, Maple Ridge

Never at any point was consideration given to the thought of reconciliation between the users of this taxpayer funded community facility and the residents. Only after the fact did the commission allow the user community a voice. We were allowed a 10-minute presentation on the subject. There were no questions or discussion, let alone a motion to address our request. The parks commission was far more interested in the staff presentation by a consultant telling them what a wonderful job they were doing. Is this the kind of representation we want or need? Traffic
Danger in single-entry neighbourhood Dear Editor, When I moved here from Port Moody more than 12 years ago, I thought of myself as a Tri-City refugee forced to make the long and dangerous journey to an unknown land called Maple Ridge. However, I never in my wildest dreams would have believed that the people running this distant outpost would do so with the foresight of a Third World Country. One would think and hope that the combined IQ of Maple Ridge planning, traffic, public works, engineering and city operation departments would be off the charts. Sadly that is not the case. As I discovered Monday morning, while trying to make my way to work out of Rock Ridge, the combined IQ of all said departments barely registered passed 27. You would think, with all that grey matter between their ears, they could have knocked heads together in the hopes that it would cause some brain cells to collide with each other, creating a spark of intelligent thought. Unfortunately, all it did was to cause the overheating of their craniums, causing a complete shutdown of rational and logical thinking, and without a fire extinguisher in sight, the smoke and flames could be seen pouring from their collective ears for miles and miles. How is it possible that all those departments decided to close off the only entry
and exit to a neighbourhood consisting of hundreds of homes and even more cars at the peak of school and work rush hour? To make matters worse and add to the level of total frustration were the looks of complete disinterest and lack of empathy coming from the faces of the numerous city employees standing around watching this traffic nightmare unfold. They couldn’t care one iota what was occurring, as it didn’t impact them in the least. City hall and all of its dim-witted city planners need to wake up and smell the three or four cups of coffee city workers usually have in their hands at any one time, and think before making a stupid decision that impacts hundreds of highly taxed and trapped citizens. With only one entry and exit to Rock Ridge and the continued building of more and more homes, including two major townhouse developments, being built as we speak, and the hundreds of vehicles making their way to and from Alouette Lake, it is only a matter of time before an emergency can’t be reached because of lack of access. And when that happens, the cost to all taxpayers as a result of the lawsuits will dwarf the cost of a second access point. C y WATER MAIN FLUSHING
The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 3, 2014. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Haney music series keeping it local
YOUR HEALTH
At the Haney Public House, live music has is part of the success.
Frequent BATHROOM TRIPS?
Cars will be heard inside the Haney Public House this Friday. Or rather, songs by the rock group that began in the late 1970s will be performed by local Cars band tribute, DRIVE. The performance is the latest in what has become known as the Live and Local Series at the wellknown watering hole. For Haney general manager Yvan Charette, the series is something that began almost by accident. Charette said the tag line was a result of exactly what they were doing. “When we first started doing live events, it was local bands that we’d book,” he explained. The series in its current inception began last October when Charette booked Bad Moon Rising – a local CCR tribute act. Charette explained that, at that point, he and his staff decided to capitalize on telling people there was an event taking place that featured homegrown talent and local artists. “We just thought ‘live and local’ was a good little tag name,” Charette said. He noted that now the venue books two or three bands a month. And, he said, offering semi-regular, locally sourced entertainment makes a better experience for all involved, especially when it coincides with a fundraiser. When people buy tickets in support of a cause and then get something like a live band mixed in, it adds value for everyone, he said.
As for the series itself, Charette said, “It’s been going very well, and has been really well received by the community.” He pointed to his staff, as well as the first performance by Bad Moon Rising back in October for helping to make the series an ongoing feature. The series is also another way, Charette said, that he and his staff are able to reach out and engage the community. And it’s that idea that has resulted in even more live music at the establishment in the form of weekly jam sessions. The sessions, which only started about four weeks ago and take place on Sunday evenings, give people “another regular stage” on which to perform, said Charette. “There’s more and more people coming out of the woodwork to perform for us,” he said. “It’s been a change and a bit of a different direction, but a very welcome and positive one,” he said of the sessions. Charette also credited his employees with the success of the live music initiatives. “I’m only as good as the staff are,” he said, “and that’s why, every day, I’m thankful for what they do. “They are a huge part of why Live and Local is doing well.” Catch the latest instalment of Live and Local this Friday and check out DRIVE – the Cars tribute band. Tickets are $10, and admission includes a free beverage before 8:30 p.m. Find the Haney Public House at 22222 Lougheed Hwy., and check them out online at www.thehaney. com.

Allergies
are a modern epidemic
By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, M.H.,PhD. What people experience: !I tried numerous other remedies all my life that were not effective. Since I discovered Bell Allergy Relief. I do not have a stuffy nose and itchy eyes when pollen season comes around. I don’t have to walk around like a doped zombie anymore. Leonard Waldner, 44, Delia, AB ! For 20 years my life was miserable with sneezing, watery eyes and sinus pressure yearround on most days. I was amazed. #24 NPN 80043542 On 3rd day all allergies were gone. It was like magic. Becky Gerber, 25, Dover, OH !Golfing without allergy attacks I tried all the medications and none worked. After taking 1 capsule in the morning I’m completely free of all symptoms. Richard Gamez, 74, San Antonio, TX morning. Therese Noto, 58, New York, NY.
SNORING?
SLEEP APNEA?
As recommended by Dr. GiffordJones M. D. Helps to reduce the time it takes to fall a sleep. In most cases also stops snoring and gasping for air (sleep apnea) first night. Stops torturing your partner all night. Good sleep prevents being tired next day. Tired people work only at half capacity. What people truly experience: ! I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, #23 NPN 80045172 Hudson, NH ! Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS ! For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS !It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Try your local health food stores first. s we all know, Canada is a land of immigrants and our First Nations. Canada is enriched by the variety of cultures from all over the world that have chosen Canada as their new home. The rules for immigration are set by the federal government. One of the immigration programs is designed to sponsor a spouse, conjugal, or common-law partner so that the couple can build their new lives together in Canada. The Government of Canada understands the importance of this relationship, and has been very flexible and lenient in the matters of spousal sponsorship. But there have been cases in which people have taken undue advantage of this leniency and have abused this avenue of immigration for the sole purpose of immigrating to Canada. As a result, the Government of Canada made the rules more stringent. On Oct. 25, 2012, new conditional
measures came into force. These conditions require the sponsored spouse or partner to cohabit in a conjugal relationship with their sponsor for a period of two years after the day on which they became a permanent resident. This condition applies only if the couple has been married for two years or less, or has been in the conjugal relationship for two years or less, or has cohabited in common-law relationship for a period of two years or less – and do not have any children in common. This condition does not apply if the couple has been married for more than two years, or has been in the conjugal relationship for more than two years, or has cohabited in a common-law relationship for more than two years, or have children in common. Another very important obligation for the sponsor is the requirement to sign a three-year contract, called an “undertaking,” with the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This undertaking is an unconditional promise to provide financial support for the basic requirements of the sponsored person, so that the sponsored person does not become a financial burden on the Canadian taxpayer. A change in the relationship (like a separation) or financial hardship does not cancel this undertaking. People who want to sponsor their partner to come to Canada will face a number of administrative hurdles, but in my experience, it’s always worth it.

Once again, Hayward resident Betsy Van Herwaarden has been globetrotting. She was recently in Bali, where she had a picture taken – naturally holding a copy of her hometown newspaper, The TIMES – at a temple. Because she had to have her legs covered, she donned a floor-length sarong. She had the picture taken with Sudiana, a Balinese tour guide. “Lovely place to visit with friendly people,” Van Herwaarden said, noting her travel plans this year are curtailed because of her son’s impending nuptials in September.

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future.

Car show helps Ridge dry grad Vintage car owners are expected at MRSS this Sunday for a show. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Maple Ridge Secondary’s graduating class of 2014 should get a boost from an upcoming car show. On Sunday, May 25, the school will once again host the MRSS Show N Shine from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. School trustee Susan Carr is organizing the event as her son is graduating from Maple Ridge Secondary this year. She said weather is always a factor for car shows, but the long-range forecast looks promising. “I’d like to exceed the 110 cars [from two years ago],” Carr said. She has contacted car
clubs from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows as well as from Langley, Mission, and Port Coquitlam. All proceeds from the show will support dry grad events. There will be music, concessions, a barbecue, a silent auction, two 50/50 draws, and trophies for the best cars – with MRSS grad Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin awarding the “mayor’s choice.” Last year the event raised about $5,000 for dry grad. There are also trophies for people’s choice, students’ choice, and principal’s choice. There is still space for non-food vendors. The cost for vendors is $25 and the cost for cars to enter is $10. Any interested vendors should contact Susan Carr at clascarr@shaw.ca.
