Heritage house retrofitted The historic Beeton Residence in Maple Ridge has been preserved and revitalized. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

A heritage farmhouse in downtown Maple Ridge was hoisted on beams and was being prepared to be turned on Wednesday after extensive renovation to restore its heritage look. The house at Dewdney Trunk Road and York Street is known as the Beeton Residence, built by Joseph Beeton in 1911. Bruce Alway has owned the house for about 10 years, and a few years ago he applied to have a heritage revitalization agreement for the property. The house will be converted into two units, and then a similar-styled building will be constructed next to it, making a strata with four town-

Alway kept some of the old, wooden floors, the original radiators, and the old stairway. The house also features high ceilings. Alway also had to restore the old exterior wooden siding – the original

exterior had been replaced with vinyl siding – as well as the trim. According to the heritage revitalization agreement, as many heritage components as possible had to be kept in the house, the builder explained. After a career in pile driving, Alway has been working on heritage renovation projects in the Lower Mainland. The former Maple Ridge resident said he prefers to see something unique constructed, rather than just a generic three-storey apartment building. “It saves someone from knocking it down and building more of those boxes,” Alway said of the historic Beeton Residence. It also adds monetary value to the property, Alway said, adding three more residences onto the property. The building was originally a farmhouse on the land which was then a poultry and dairy farm. The house was later owned by the Daykin family.

Students walk out of classes Story and photo by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

More than 100 secondary students in the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows school district left their classes Wednesday morning to express frustration at the ongoing labour strife between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the provincial government. Teachers from the local school district have already been on strike for two days. Clara Fawcett was at the district office with her two daughters and nephew. She said the government should understand it’s the students who are being affected by the ongoing job action by teachers. “It hurts them every time they lose a day of school,” she insisted. Her daughter Katelyn Fawcett wished the two sides would stop arguing and come to an agreement. Maple Ridge Secondary Grade 9 student Ben Williamson was one of the students who left school to join the student protest Wednesday. “To both of the parties, just figure it out,” he said. Negotiations are continuing between the union and the employers’ agency, with the BCTF lowering its salary demands by one per cent. So far, teachers have been locked out during recess and lunch and 45 minutes before and after school. On Wednesday, the Labour Relations Board ruled this lockout and a 10 per cent wage cut were legal. BCTF have since announced teachers will continue rotating strikes, and will vote early next week if they’re going to escalate job action to a full strike.

(BCHBC) Rendevous 2014 came to Maple Ridge. “Generally speaking, the event was an overwhelming success in all areas,” said Peter Thiessen, chairperson of the event. “Normally our membership attendance is around 175 to 200 members, but this year we had in excess of 400 members.” Though the event is a tradition for the 700-member provincewide club, this year’s event featured a few firsts. For example, Thiessen explained that this year was the first time live entertainment – in the form of country singer Aaron Pritchett and country music duo One More Girl – was part of the dance.

Army cadets reviewed

A ceremony on Sunday was a ‘day to shine’ for those involved in a long-standing military event.

This past Sunday marked a special occasion – now 72 years old in Maple Ridge. Across the street from the Royal Canadian Legion, in the parking lot of the Ridge Meadows Hospice, the 1838 Royal Canadian Army Cadets held their annual ceremonial review. About 40 cadets were on parade for the event. “We start preparing for this shortly after Christmas, said Lieutenant Donald Caissie. “It’s the cadets’ day to shine.”

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

Thanks Bruce,

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future.

MARINE SEASON IS IN FULL SWING!

Maple Ridge Concert Band flash mobbed the Haney Farmers Market on Saturday. Rick Moyer/TIMES

Memorial Peace Park

Mob descends on market A major sponsor is still needed for a second stage at the June 14 bandstand birthday bash. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

It started with just a lone piccolo playing at the Haney Farmers Market at noon on Saturday. Then, one by one, members of the Maple Ridge Concert Band descended on the market and eventually 35 members played Colonel Bogey March. “It went fabulous – we had a great time,” said Gale Yip, spokesperson for the non-profit band. “It was very well received.”

The audience was so taken with the music, they cheered and asked for more, Yip elaborated. But the concert band flash mob was at the market just giving a sneak peak of the upcoming Envision Bandstand Birthday Bash, being planned for June 14 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The bandstand is 20 years old this year, and the Maple Ridge Concert Band has taken the lead on raising money to refurbish the bandstand and to organize the birthday party. Because there were so many performers wanting to take part, the concert band decided to add an extra stage to the party. But, it would help if they had a sponsor for this second stage, Yip said. Anyone who can help out is asked to contact Yip at mrcb@telus.net.

Our View

Value lost in drug’s victims We’ve all long known of heroin and morphine, and more recently, oxycodone has joined the list of familiar opiates whose addictive effects help to destroy lives. Perhaps a little less familiar is the synthetic opiate fentanyl. But get used to hearing about it. Fentanyl is killing people, and it’s killing them right next door to you. The BC Coroners Service has issued a special warning that the drug is causing fatalities, particularly in communities covered by the Fraser Health Authority, and Maple Ridge was among those singled out for special notice. The coroner reported that there have been 13 deaths attributable to fentanyl in the region in just the first four months of 2014. That compares to 12 fentanyl-related deaths in all of 2013, and six in 2012. Regional coroner Liana Wright is concerned that there likely have been more deaths in May. Of course, she can’t project such numbers into June and further… but there appears to be a trend. And it’s nothing short of ugly. Apparently, fentanyl is often taken in conjunction with some of the other opiates, but no traces of heroin or oxycodone have shown up in the recent victims’s bodies. The coroner suggests that the users had been led to believe that they were buying something other than fentanyl. It’s easy to shrug it all off – they’re are “just a bunch of druggies” after all, and why should we bother with them? First is the reality that “recreational” users, and not just hard-core addicts are among the victims – they could be your sons and daughters. More importantly, every human being has value. Everyone counts. It’s time we take greater note of that value, in the context of society as a whole, and not just in the context of those who have escaped the pitfalls that bring down so many among us. – B.G.

Seems they have found that Red is “harbouring” a man. Now that’s the kind of thing that they absolutely ban. There IS no he, or him, Red huffed, just stating simply that. You can come and check, ya want, unless you meant the cat. All went well then, for another month or so, Till Red, checking her account, found nothing but… zero. “We don’t have your stuff!” they said, sniffily all haughty. “I sent it twice!” wailed Red, “and I have not been naughty!” Bad Girl. Cut off. Said the Mineh?stree.

Come and listen to my story ’bout a gal named Red, A poor Pitt woman – pains keep her in her bed. Then one day as she tried to eat some food, Right through the door comes a letter that is crude... Bad girl! Cut off! Said the Mineh?stree.

Well, the first thing you know, ol’ Red it seems is fixed. Surgery went well (huh?!), and now the money’s nixed. Kinfolk said, “Red, there are no scars on thee!” Said, “A worker is the one you really need to see!” In Maple Ridge, that is. Long lines, no loos.

Celebrations

100-year theme continues

Pitt Meadows Day celebrations run from morning to night. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The 100th birthday of Pitt Meadows will continue to be celebrated – this time on Pitt Meadows Day. Taking part in the centennial year’s Pitt Meadows Day celebrations will be the province’s lieutenant-governor, Judith Guichon, who will be in the parade judges’ tent and at the opening ceremonies. Because of the centennial year, all the exhibitors on the field at Harris Road Park have been asked to weave in something that reflects the heritage of the City, explained Pitt Meadows Day Society’s president Rick Higgs. Pitt Meadows Day, this year on June 7, begins with the traditional pancake breakfast put on by the Pitt Meadows Lions at Heritage Hall between 8 and 10 a.m. The parade gets underway at 11 a.m., but the road closures go from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

TIMES files

Kids line the streets for the Pitt Meadows Day parade – organizers are asking they keep their bums on the curb for safety’s sake. There will be floats, bands, walking groups, and other community groups marching along Harris Road. “It will be a fun parade as it typically is,” Higgs said. But Higgs cautioned that for safety, anyone at the front of the parade should stay seated during as the parade goes by, adding this is the key message for parents, grandparents, older siblings, and aunts and uncles. “Make sure bums stay on the curb,” he said. The parade begins on Blakely Street and continues west on Hammond Road, and then turns north on Harris Road and goes

to Heritage Hall. The opening ceremonies take place at 1 p.m. Pitt Meadows citizen of the year, Eric Muller, will be introduced as well as the Lynn Papp award winner, Bri Milli. Entertainment begins on a bandstand in Harris Road Park right after the opening ceremonies and continues till 8 p.m. with the headliner One More Girl. There will be a salmon and chicken barbecue from 5 to 7 p.m. To end the day, the firefighters will set off fireworks at Pitt Meadows Athletic Park (at South Bonson and Airport Way) at about 10 p.m.

Pitt Meadows Day

Crown depicts City pride A new royal party will be unveiled at Saturday’s opening ceremonies. Story and photo by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

At first, Amneet Basra didn’t believe the news. Amneet was chosen as this year’s Miss Pitt Meadows, but was skeptical when she first found out. After receiving a phone call, her dad approached her and addressed her as Miss Pitt Meadows. “I was like, ‘nice joke dad,’” she said. Amneet said her dad explained the phone call was in fact real and “after about five minutes, I started believing him.” Her name chosen out of a hat – along with the members of the Royal Party – the 12-year-old Grade 6 student at Pitt Meadows Elementary said that with this title, she is excited to represent Pitt Meadows during the upcoming year. And it’s things like “the scenery, the backgrounds, the farms, and the people”

that Amneet said she loves the most about her community. Looking ahead to her duties, she said she’s really looking forward to Canada Day celebrations, and getting to “light the big tree” at Christmas. She said she’s both nervous and comfortable about what’s ahead, and though there’s always something to do, Amneet doesn’t feel that she’s “too busy.” Tasked with writing a speech, Amneet said she’ll talk about how Pitt Meadows has changed over the last 100 years, about herself and her family, about Pitt Meadows, and all the things she loves about it. “We’re honoured to have Amneet as our daughter,” said her dad Sarbjeet. “She’s smart, caring, and loves to learn.” The first Miss Pitt Meadows was named in 1938 and the tradition has continued ever since. Amneet will officially be crowned Miss Pitt Meadows during the opening ceremony of Pitt Meadows Day this Saturday.

Crews will be repairing electrical ducting that runs underneath the bridge. Construction will require single-lane, alternating traffic across the bridge on the following dates: •

June 9, 2014.

June 23 -24, 2014

By: Don Westein, Health Editor After years of painstaking research, scientists have announced a weight loss discovery so radical it could end America’s obesity epidemic by 2018. “This is a real gamechanger!" Says John P, a nutritionist from Phoenix, AZ. Some say, Garcinia Cambogia is going to put millions out of work. Referring to the countless jobs in the diet industry. But just think about the millions of lives that will be saved from sickness and disease that comes from being fat! Famous TV Heart Surgeon: This is the “Holy Grail for people with Weight problems!”

So exactly why is Garcinia Cambogia wowing the scientific community?

For one thing, it’s not another diet craze that’s in one day and out the other. It’s a remarkable substance derived from an amazing pumpkin shaped fruit grown in southeast Asia… But not just any variety of Garcinia will do. It has to be grown only in specific regions and cultivated under just the right conditions. The very best of the crop is “Garcinia Cambogia 2000”. Garcinia Cambogia wipes away fat so completely, that it has caught the attention of scientists and weight loss experts all over the globe. It works like nothing else seen before. Simply take as directed and eat reasonably. You can almost see your excess fat melt off your body. It’s just that effective! Experts predict, the data is so compelling... “Weight-loss centers could be forced to shut down. Diet doctors could be out of business within 5-years.” “There just won’t be a need for them anymore,” he added.

Gastric Bypass in a Bottle

Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are asked to adhere to all traffic control personnel. Once this work is completed, an additional one-day, single-lane closure across the bridge will be required. This work has yet to be scheduled, but advanced notification will be provided. BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience this construction may cause and we thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or would like more information about this construction, please contact BC Hydro at 1 866 647 3334 or stakeholderengagement@bchydro.com. 4239

The real power of Garcinia Cambogia lies deep inside the fruit. It contains an ingredient called HCA (Hydroxycitric Acid) that melts fat away in the same way stomach stapling does. Johan Stifling, a leading scientist in Utrecht Holland says: “With Garcinia it doesn’t take much to fill you up. You’re just not hungry anymore. The compound absolutely kills uncontrollable urges to binge on food in just minutes after taking it. After just a few bites, you’ll feel stuffed to the gills. You’ll swear your stomach has shrunk.” The secret is its ability to inhibit Citrate Lyase Enzyme (the stuff that turns carbs into fat). HCA builds an

“impenetrable wall” so fat can’t get absorbed by your body… so you simply can’t gain weight. Then, the HCA breaks up the fat you already have and forces it out of your body. Think about it. A pill that stops fat from being made, as it obliterates the fat you already have. Incredibly, the pounds and inches just roll off you.

Not Just for the Wealthy

Until recently, only the rich, famous and powerful have been able to try Garcinia Cambogia. But now, for the first time ever, the manufacturer has made this revolutionary perfected Garcina Cambogia and made it available to the general public. They Call it Garcina Cambogia 2000. And since the country’s obesity rate is at an all-time-high; it couldn’t have come at a better time.

When you take Garcinia...”After just a few bites of your meal, you’ll feel stuffed to the gills.”– Johan Stifling, Clinical Therapist

Unlike other products on the market that do little or nothing for your weight problem; Garcinia Cambogia 2000 contains the precise doses of Garcinia and HCA; cultivated in optimized conditions and perfected for rapid and permanent weight loss. The result? You’ll see changes in your appetite almost overnight!

Your Body... Perfected!

There’s a surprise side benefit in Garcinia Cambogia 2000 that virtually no other weightloss product can give you — MUSCLE! Garcinia Cambogia also builds up your muscle tone. So not only do you rid your body of ugly fat… you get stronger too! Take as directed and Garcinia Cambogia will have you slimmer, trimmer and strikingly fit. You’ll see a total body makeover in no time!

No More “Stress-Eating Binges”

If you’re an emotional eater (and who isn’t), you’ll never worry about over-eating again. Garcinia Cambogia 2000 stops your compulsion to "stuff your face" during times of stress. It’s pure magic. Garcinia Cambogia 2000 jump-starts your serotonin levels like a natural Xanex. So you don’t give in to the temptation of “comfort food” to calm down.

THESE STATEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN EVALUATED BY THE US FOODAND DRUGADMINISTRATION. THESE PRODUCTS ARE NOT INTENDED TO DIAGNOSE, TREAT, CURE OR PREVENT ANY DISEASE. RESULTS NOT TYPICAL.

As new pill gains popularity, scenes like this will become rare and unusual. You’ll feel great, you’ll sleep great, and look great. And even be able squeeze into your favorite pair of skinny jeans again!

Healthier Heart

And here’s fantastic news for your heart. The HCA concentration in Garcinia Cambogia 2000 is proven to lower LDL ‘bad cholesterol’ by a whopping 31%. So you can enjoy the benefits of a healthy heart, great blood pressure numbers, and normal blood sugar too. That's great news for people have been overweight for years and put unnecessary stress on their heart.

Clinical Studies Don’t Lie!

In a recent study published in theAmerican Journal of Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, scientists discovered that Garcinia Cambogia causes significant weight loss, lowers food intake and body weight gain, as well as tackling factors such as cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, triglycerides, and serum leptin levels.

100% Safe

What’s more, Garcinia Cambogia contains no fillers, no binders, and it’s produced in state-of-the-art FDA registered lab facilities. It’s 100% safe, natural and won’t interfere with your regular medications. So you can lose weight with confidence.

Ecstatic Users

Sandy M. of Orlando, FL said, “I lost 4 pounds a week. And my ‘bad cholesterol’ dropped almost 30%!” Robin B. of Minneapolis, MN adds, “I was skeptical. But when I saw a Famous TV Doctor that recommend it, I tried Garcinia Cambogia. I was shocked! I lost 20 lbs. in the first month!” Special arrangements have been made with the manufacturer to supply our readers with a risk-free 30-day trial supply of Garcinia Cambogia. Call today and find out how you can get a bottle absolutely FREE! But you must act now; supplies are limited.

Swimming gives hope After what seemed at first like devastating news, a young Ridge swimmer is reaching for the top. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

Nine year-old Maple Ridge swimmer Vanessa McNabb will compete at the Haney Neptunes swim meet this weekend with a goal in mind. “I really want to make it to the provincials in swimming this summer, and I think I have a pretty good chance,” she said. While many competitive athletes pursue different types of plans, McNabb’s statement is a resounding one when one considers the road she’s taken to get to where she is today. McNabb was born with a rare condition in both of her legs. Without warning, her muscles supporting her knee structure will fail, and she’ll fall. The falls started when the now 5’2 McNabb was in junior kindergarten. Thinking she was just going through an awkward development phase, those around her attributed the falls to a growth spurt. It wasn’t until Grade 1

Vanessa McNabb when Vanessa suffered a serious injury at school, that her disability was discovered. After being rushed to the hospital, Vanessa had her leg examined. It was so swollen that the doctors at the hospital couldn’t determine the extent of her injury. With a referral to BC Children’s Hospital in 2012, the family met with Dr. Christopher Reilly, head of children’s orthopedics. It turned out McNabb had a very rare condition where here knee dislocates multiple times a day. Her patellar sublaxation could not be corrected through any form of exercise or physiotherapy.

Sports could mean trauma that could cause early childhood arthritis at the very least. Surgery on both knees would be required to allow her to walk without the fear of falling. The idea that Vanessa could never pursue sports like other children – even after surgeries – devastated her family. “I cried for what I knew she would never be able to experience,” said her mom, Tammy. The family spent a year meeting with Reilly – not rushing into surgery, but in constant fear of her falls. Reilly asked if Vanessa liked to swim, and said it’d be great for her physiotherapy. The family decided to pursue the Haney Neptunes in Maple Ridge. Being in the pool allowed Vanessa to get the physical activity she was lacking in her life, and she took to the water quickly and naturally. Starting in 2012, she swam two times a week until the spring of 2013 where she was able to swim with the team four to five days a week and begin competing on weekends. Vanessa will compete at the meet this weekend, which runs all day on both Saturday and Sunday. More at www.mrtimes.com, search “McNabb”

Bailey Soolsma is off to California this coming fall.

Bailey Soolsma has her golden ticket to the Golden State. The 6’1 Grade 12 French immersion student at Maple Ridge Secondary (MRSS) will be pursuing post-secondary education in San Francisco this coming fall. She will do so with 80 per cent of her schooling paid for, through a volleyball scholarship agreement she’s signed with

the San Francisco Academy of Arts’ Urban Knights. A volleyball player since the age of six, Soolsma explained it was always her dream to play in the U.S.A. “They’re more competition- and more sport-focused,” she said. Her coach, Ed Jackson is happy to welcome her. “I am very excited about the potential Bailey has with our program,” he said. “She brings a balance of size and fundamental skills that will make her a strong competitor in our conference.” Soolsma spent her five years at MRSS playing volleyball, both in and out of the school. She joined the Ridge Meadows Volley Club at age 13, and didn’t look back.

She played for the local club for two years, before venturing to North Vancouver to play with a club there. Last year, the team finished second in the province, and fourth at nationals. During the 2014 season, Soolsma played with the Vancouver Thunder volleyball club. Soolsma has also been a team captain for both her club and school teams for the past three years. As summer approaches, Soolsma will continue training both indoors and on the beach – competing in several tournaments in the Lower Mainland and California. She will also be a beach volleyball coach at the BC Summer Games.
