A young couple with deep roots in Maple Ridge are set to tie the knot Saturday in Memorial Peace Park. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

A spur-of-the-moment suggestion from a friend has resulted in a unique wedding ceremony happening in Maple Ridge Saturday. Originally, Alex Angus and Amanda Rohl were supposed to get married in 2015 at a venue in New Westminster. Instead, the pair will wed this weekend in downtown Haney’s Memorial Peace Park. And though it’s not uncommon for wedding plans to change, it’s the location of the ceremony and the reason behind it that’s different. Angus and Rohl will say their “I do’s” at the Maple Ridge bandstand, during the Envision Financial’s Bandstand 20th Birthday Bash this weekend. They currently reside in New Westminster, but Rohl and Angus were both raised in Maple Ridge and describe the bandstand and the area around it as “home.” “We’ve both been part of a lot of community bands, and we both played at that bandstand for years and years,” said Angus, who turns 22 in October. “We both did swimming, we were always around the leisure centre, and we were

both part of the Maple Ridge Concert Band, (MRCB)” elaborated Rohl, 25. She said that growing up, she and Angus “never really connected.” But, after high school, they both joined a community choir in Coquitlam, and “that’s where we kind of hit it off.” As for getting married at the bandstand, Rohl and Angus can thank a friend for that suggestion. “It was actually really funny,” said Rohl. She explained that “literally on the day” they had decided on a venue for 2015, a friend from the MRCB suggested getting married at the bandstand as part of the birthday bash. “We were both, like, ‘that’s actually perfect’,” Rohl recalled. Of course, getting married in a park means that even though the ceremony is very personal, it will be a very public event. Rohl said the official guest list is about 110 people – “130 if you include the band” – but also said that pretty much anyone can come. Though the marriage is an official one, ‘we are kind of thought of as an act,” said Rohl. “Pretty much anyone I’ve talked to, who I haven’t been able to officially invite to the wedding, I’ve told to just come to the bandstand at 3 p.m.,” she explained. Getting married doesn’t put their music schedule on hold, however. “Our band life is ridiculous right now,” said Rohl.

about practical details. Some issues have been worked through with the school district, for example, report cards. “We have a good working relationship with [acting superintendent] Laurie Meston,” Serra said. “That’s been helpful in these difficult times.”

Serra met with school district staff this week and the union and senior staff were able to come up with an abbreviated template for report cards. “Report cards are going to look very different,” he said.

Couple shares love of music

There are still flecks of green paint on the garage floor of the Moss home where the Maple Ridge bandstand ceiling panels were painted. That was 20 years ago – and Ken and Noreen Moss are still involved with the Maple Ridge Concert Band, the local musical group that was instrumental in getting the bandstand built in Memorial Peace Park. In fact, the couple joined the concert band in 1976, just a year after moving to Maple Ridge – and they are both still playing. This Saturday, the bandstand that has become an iconic fixture for hundreds of events in Maple Ridge will be the focal point of a celebration – the Envision Financial Bandstand Birthday Bash. Ken plays the trumpet and Noreen has played the clarinet for years, but just recently learned to play the trombone and has enjoyed the new challenge. The Mosses have stayed with

A celebration of one of Maple Ridge’s most iconic structures takes place this Saturday. The bandstand at Memorial Peace Park officially opened on May 7, 1994 after roughly two months of construction work. To celebrate its 20th year in the community, the Maple Ridge Concert Band (MRCB) is hosting the Envision Financial Bandstand Birthday Bash on June 14, with performances running from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entertainment includes jazz bands, dance and fencing groups, drama, concert bands, singers, and even a wedding. The headlining act is the Bruce James Orchestra. Activities include face-painting, a kids zone, crafts, a “tap snap” photo booth, and a balloon artist. As well, there will be food and merchant vendors as well as a farmers market. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin will be welcoming the community. Years have rubbed a fair amount of shine off the bandstand, which was originally financed primarily with private and corporate donations through fundraising efforts from George Price – past president of the Legion Branch 88 – and members of the MRCB. The studio walls at Vicuna Art Studio and Gallery are filled with colourful paintings, all done by people with developmental disabilities. The studio runs art classes throughout the week and about 50 painters come to express their creative side, under the tutelage of Maria Daley in a program run by the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living. “The most important thing is the bonding and relationships at the beginning because it’s about trust,” Daley said about her art programs. This Friday and Saturday, there will be an art show featuring Daley’s students’ artwork as well as pottery. The first location of the studio was in east Maple Ridge but it was too far for many of the painters, so the studio was moved to the Maple Meadows Business Park. Daley tries to make the environment comfortable and relaxed, and many budding artists who were hesitant at first now don’t want to leave, she explained. “This is their place to be,” she said. Roger Larmor, director of employment and community services with the Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living, said Vicuna Art Studio is dedicated to building the

confidence of people with developmental disabilities. “The studio has been successful in nurturing growth in the participants to the point that the art produced has been displayed and sold in many residential and commercial settings,” Larmor said. “The benefits for the artists include both a sense of personal accomplishment as well as financial.” Recently, Vicuna sold 16 art pieces for display at one of the Bentall buildings in Vancouver. The painters are charged just $3 per hour-long class, and this helps pay for supplies. When the art is sold, the artist gets

60 per cent of the price while 40 per cent goes back into the program. Daley brought more than two decades of experience getting people with developmental disabilities to do art before opening Vicuna Art Studio and Gallery in Maple Ridge in 2008. The art show, Spring into Summer, will be at Vicuna Art Studio and Gallery this Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The opening reception is on Thursday, June 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. Vicuna Art Studio and Gallery is located at #1-11491 Kingston St., Maple Ridge.

Fallen heroes earn respect They’re all heroes. That’s sometimes forgotten between the big tragedies that remind us. In 2005 it was four RCMP officers ambushed and killed in Mayerthorpe, Alberta. This week all of Canada mourns three Mounties shot to death in Moncton, New Brunswick. They are the latest to join the list of nearly 150 police officers murdered in the line of duty in recent years – at a rate of about three a year. (That number does not include other job-related deaths such as traffic accidents and the like.) And as if to add a special reminder for those who are still too slow to get it, a Vancouver Police officer was shot and injured, along with two civilians, in an “incident” on Tuesday morning. The Vancouver incident resulted in a shootout in which police put their lives on the line in defence of bus loads of children locked down for their own protection in the nearby Science World building. That’s what they do. It’s their job, but it does take a special kind of person to do it. When we’re not mourning fallen heroes, it’s easy to point at the odd officer who goes astray, and to use their indiscretions – admittedly, sometimes, serious criminal indiscretions – and complain about corruption or poor training or lack of honour in our police forces. But the reality is that Canada’s police are respected world-wide – and the 20,000 or so Mounties and tens of thousands of provincial, city, and municipal police officers across the country earn that respect every day. Despite the tragedies that befall our heroes like those in Moncton – or perhaps because our police bear the brunt by putting themselves in harm’s way – violent crime rates have been plummeting, and today’s Canada literally may be the safest place in the world – and in history. – B.G.

I read an article about a child care opportunity when and if teachers are on strike. It was an eye-opener! A local institute advertised that, if and when teachers go on strike, they offered day care for the children. Briefly, this was their message: Send the child to daycare camp at a cost of $38/day/child. Keep in mind, they offer a supervisory role – not teaching – and their groups may be much fewer than 25 children.

Compare that to a teacher’s job – not just supervising, but actually teaching, evaluating, developing curriculum, etc. An average class size of 25 (very low) at $38/day equals $950/day. Times 20 days/month it equals $19,000/month, and over 10 months, that equals $190,000/ year. Wow. I wish our teachers were paid at that level. They are university trained for a minimum of five years and do a lot more than just supervise behaviours. They are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that children master the government’s mandated curriculum. Not many parents could afford a program offered at $38/day. Perhaps a senior political leader may be able to afford those rates? Some have chosen to send their children to private schools. Having taught and administered in both systems in my very enjoyable 37-year career, I feel confident that the public school system is doing just fine and should be recognized for its commitment to students and the profession. t was 90 years ago this month that Maple Ridge family-run Fuller Watson opened its doors. And this Saturday, the fourth-generation family business, located at 22390 Lougheed Hwy., is marking the occasion and inviting everyone in the community to drop by and say hello. Though they don’t have anything “too extravagant planned,” Dave Fuller, whose great-grandfather started the store, said a barbecue is tentatively scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and a cake cutting at 1 p.m. Reflecting on the past 90 years, Fuller said the key to the longevity of the family business is threefold. “Number one is customer service,” he said. “The other thing is the long-time and knowledgeable staff we have here.”

Teachers preparing us for life Annual General Meeting

his is the most beautiful commuter location in the country, I say to myself as I stare out over the Fraser River to Mount Baker from the Port Haney West Coast Express station. It’s 6:45 a.m. as I sleepily watch my beautiful daughter – a morning person – leap on the train, into the world it now takes her to. Trains move so slowly, sometimes you forget they are heading out at all. Then they speed up, like some souped-up Eurostar, and you are 30 feet below water, holding your breath in hopes that all will end well. Or am I being a tad overdramatic? Could be, it’s early in the morning and I tend toward the dramatic these days. There have been more than a few trains, planes, and automobiles in our lives these past months as her younger sister tours universities to see where she might lay down her own tracks. I first saw this gorgeous view a million years ago, when I hopped a train that snaked past the Billy Miner Pub as the sun set, escaping a monotonous first job for no good reason at all. It was fun. In the 10-minute decision to make the journey, I never once thought about my future, except to imagine it may be down those tracks somewhere. It wasn’t, but did I mention we had fun? I bore my kids with that story a lot these days as they consider the best path to their future. I’ve actually been trying to subvert them since their early days of school, which unfortunately coincided

Oops, it seems this train is heading off the rails along with the never-ending education dispute. But heck, as my family rides into the sunset, I may as well yell out the window once more. And I’ll be yelling, “Thank you,” to superb locked-out teachers forced to the sidewalks with their lunch in a gut-wrenching and disgraceful move by their employer. Thanks for never taking this bargaining acrimony into the classrooms in what has been the most tumultuous education environment in our province’s history – where cuts and disrespect seemed to reign in Victoria.

I could name countless triumphs, passions and joys in academic terms. But it’s the other things you did inside and outside the classroom – for which you will never be adequately compensated – that I remember right now. So, thanks for the many times you helped those kids without money or motivation, without community or confidence. Sometimes without love. There’s no doubt in my mind that your work is a calling, and no amount of rhetoric or twisted logic from anyone, or any side, will take away the images of kindness and grace. I have no idea what final grad functions or classes may be cancelled during the latest education standoff. We can do without the pomp and ceremony if we have to, just like we used to do without the report cards. But we can’t do without what you’ve already helped teach our youngest daughter: be curious, take chances, play. And I might add, play fair – perfect lessons to take aboard the train that will soon be heading, past the Billy, the Fraser, and into the gorgeous and unpredictable future you’ve helped her imagine. With any luck, it will be fun.

When Judith Guichon stepped out of the vehicle under Saturday morning’s sunny skies, she felt blessed to be back in Pitt Meadows again, this time serving as an honorary parade judge and guest speaker for the Pitt Meadows Day opening ceremonies. “I love a parade, doesn’t everyone?” B.C.’s LieutenantGovernor said, taking her post at the judges tent – where she was greeted and saluted by various parade participants and spectators. Even the scouts presented her with a framed scouting badge they had made up specifically for the City’s centennial. While her niece lives in Maple Ridge, Guichon admitted she hasn’t spent much time in this region. She was, however, in town back in January to attend an honour exhibit at Pitt Meadows Secondary. During a lunch with City Mayor Deb Walters that same day, she learned Pitt Meadows was celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Noting the “enthusiasm” that was building around the City’s anniversary plans she graciously accepted an invitation to return for the popular Pitt Meadows Day festivities this past weekend. “I can see that infectious attitude is all over town… obviously the heart of this community is very big…” she said, pointing to the crowds and 80-plus parade entries.

Part of the planned beautification of the bandstand includes cleaning and treating the bandstand’s copper dome to refurbish of natural patina finish, supplying and installing a wooden octagonal rosette for the ceiling, and supplying and installing eight ornamental brackets that surround the circle near the bandstand pillars. Recently, four of the five refurbishment items have been done, noted MRCB president Gale Yip. Monies donated to date have taken care of these aforementioned items. The last refurbishment is the cleaning, restoring, and treatment of the bandstand’s copper dome with preliminary estimates between $40,000 and $50,000. Yip said this beautification project is well worth the time, money, and effort. “This bandstand is the most iconic and recognizable structure within downtown Maple Ridge,” Yip said. The structure is used in backgrounds for pictures, weddings, television, and movies. “My motivation behind this refurbish-

ment is to make everyone aware that this bandstand was hand-built through the fundraising and labour efforts of the individuals representing the Maple Ridge Concert Band from 1992 to 1994, which many in the community are not aware of,” Yip said. Yip added that many in the community assume that the municipality built the bandstand, when in fact, it was the MRCB that took a leading role in its design and construction. The band’s longtime trombonist Tom Walker designed and donated many hours of structural and building engineering towards the project’s design. “We have a small recognition within a bronze marker pedestal displayed beside the bandstand,” Yip said., The public can still help support this renovation project. Details are online at www.mrcb.ca. “Large donations might qualify for a special 20th anniversary bronze marker installed, and displayed perpetually on the bandstand steps,” Yip noted.

eather Middlemass has no excuse not to get on a bicycle and ride from Vancouver to Seattle this Father’s Day week-

end. She is healthy, she isn’t fighting a disease that has hit close to home for her on many fronts, and she isn’t undergoing any rigorous treatments. Heather will be one of hundreds – including D’Arcy Balla from Pitt Meadows who is riding with Team Finn – getting on their bikes this weekend and pedalling 200 kilometres in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. “I couldn’t think of an excuse not to go,” Heather said. Joining her on the ride is her middle daughter, Elena, who was the one who talked her into going. Cancer hit their family in 2009 when Bruce Middlemass, Heather’s husband

and Elena’s dad, was diagnosed with acute-myeloid leukemia. His treatment included both chemotherapy and radiation. Then in 2012, Bruce was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had his entire pancreas removed. He is currently in remission. Elena wanted to do something to support her dad, which is why she chose to do the ride of Father’s Day, Heather said. Heather has been training for the ride, and while it seems “daunting,” it’s nothing compared to what people with cancer go through, she said. She hopes to draw energy from others riding with her. “I think the enthusiasm of the group will carry me on,” Heather said. The mother and daughter are part of the Motley Crew team. As of the TIMES’ press deadline, the top fundraiser in Canada was Gino Laplante, a Pitt Meadows resident and cancer survivor who is riding with his wife and three children. Alexis Torin is poised for flight. The 15-year-old rising basketball star and Grade 9 Thomas Haney student is the lone player from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to make the B.C. team in her division. But the accolades don’t end there. “She’s been told by the SFU basketball coach that she’s the best shooter in her age group right now in the game,” said her dad, Matthew. “That was a huge compliment.” Alexis is also Las Vegas-bound with the B.C. team this summer

And Alexis has set herself a goal. “I definitely want to get a scholarship,” she said. “That’s what I’ve been working towards.” Though open to playing in Canada or the United States, she said that, given the choice, she would head south of the 49th parallel.

Albion launches league There’s a new kid on the block in the local soccer community. by Eric Zimmer

A new soccer club in Maple Ridge received its stamp of approval from B.C. Soccer on Monday evening. The decision was far from instant though. Born out of an idea couple years ago after the Pitt Meadows and Golden Ears clubs merged, the process began when some in the community started looking for alternatives. “People came to us, and said ‘would you consider putting together another

club?’” explained Albion FC president Mike Smith. After some discussion, a request for the review of the application was put in to grant the group official club status. Part of the deal required the club to have at least four teams, totalling 44 kids by April 15 to be considered. “On March 21, we came to them with around 180 kids who were interested,” Though Smith said there was brief celebration at the news Tuesday from those involved, he recognizes the group’s got its work cut out for them. Soccer starts in September and “we’ve got essentially two months to put a whole club together,” he said. For info, to go www.albionfc.ca.

Sport logger heads to Alberta A Maple Ridge timbersport logger will compete this weekend. Don’t tell him it’s not a sport. After all, he carries an axe – a big one. Stirling Hart of Maple Ridge was raised on logger sports. He had his first axe by the age of two, started speed climbing at four, and did his first competition at eight years old. Both his father and grandfather were Canadian champions. After 14 years of competing, Hart says the men

Maple Ridge’s Stirling Hart will compete this weekend in Alberta. and women involved in the sport take the events much more seriously, with professional training and coaching, and an increased focus on fitness.

He attributes the professionalism coming into the sport to the event’s sponsor STIHL. “Before STIHL came along, timbersports was more of a club, or a hobby. I always thought of it as a paid camping trip – cut some wood, have some fun.” This weekend, Hart will travel to Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., for the STIHL Timbersports Western Qualifier on Saturday.
