Funding model changes threaten youth house Iron Horse is funded until Sept. 30. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Transition funding is in place for a youth safe house in Maple Ridge, but it is still uncertain whether it will remain open after September. The Iron Horse Youth Safe House has received its funding largely from

the federal government’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS). But with the criteria changing, the fate of the Maple Ridge facility is uncertain, said Stephanie Ediger, executive director with Alouette Home Start Society, which runs the program. “We’re in a crunch that happens when you don’t have a diverse funding base,” Ediger said. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie, who sits on the

Social Planning Advisory Committee, brought up the uncertainty of the future of the youth safe house at Tuesday’s council meeting. “We’ll have to do some very serious lobbying with both the federal and provincial governments to look at how do we save this very important service,” Ashlie told council. This time round, new terms and condition require that programs receiving HPS funding are devoted 65 per cent to

funding to run the house, about $325,000 per year, has come from the federal government, the community also provides support for the facility, Ediger said. Iron Horse Youth Safe House receives support from the District of Maple Ridge in the form of a rentfree house. In addition, they receive many in-kind donations and donations of clothing and furniture.

Caribbean sounds resonate

A free two-day festival will take over Maple Ridge. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Two days of non-stop sounds, smells, and tastes of the Caribbean will run this Saturday and Sunday in downtown Maple Ridge. Deddy Geese, owner of Hagen’s Travel on 224th Street, is in charge of entertainment and marketing for the 14th annual Caribbean Festival – “without music, no party,” he said. “We’ve brought [the festival] to a level where it’s difficult to bring it up a notch,” Geese said. In addition to reggae, calypso, salsa, and soca music from noon until 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday there will be a open air street market with food and goods. A kids zone will feature rides and street entertainers. Festivalgoers are encouraged to come by bike, foot, or public transportation, or use public parking.

Judges check out Ridge Communities in Bloom is about more than just gardening and landscaping. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Community in Bloom judges will arrive next week – and they will look at Maple Ridge through the lens of its social, environmental, heritage, and esthetic assets. Charlotte Mitchell and Cyndy JohnsonMcCormick are co-chairs of Maple Ridge’s Communities in Bloom, and as part of the preparation, they were at the Intergenerational Garden on Edge Street this week making scarecrows. “Communities in Bloom is about a blooming community,” said Mitchell. When the judges arrive to assess Maple Ridge, stops will include Memorial Peace Park and the bandstand, The ACT, Maple Ridge Museum, Ridge Meadows Recycling, Whonnock Lake, and Port Hammond. One of the stops is also the Intergenerational Garden on Edge Street,

which combines the skills and knowledge of adult gardeners, including many seniors, with the manpower of younger generations including students from St. Patrick’s School and Eric Langton Elementary next door. The judges will fill out scorecards on how the community ranks for floral displays, urban forestry, landscape, heritage conservation, environmental action, and tidiness. Johnson-McCormick and Mitchell have been getting the word out over the last couple of months, and have championed a number of events and projects to encourage citizens to beautify their front yards and green spaces. Johnson-McCormick said it’s been more work than they first imagined, but added it’s been “very rewarding to meet so many people in our community who share a passion for gardening and have such great pride in their homes and this community.” Next Tuesday, July 15, community members are invited back to the Intergenerational Garden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to make handprinted bunting.

Summer

Firefighters stage community water fight

Young kids especially enjoy touring fire trucks, according to one assistant fire chief. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge firefighters are offering some cool relief around the community on hot summer nights. The fire department is launching its annual Hot Summer Nights program whereby they visit local neighbourhoods and parks with their trucks and hoses and let residents meet both paid-on-call and career firefighters, get sprayed, and learn about fire safety. Assistant fire chief Michael Van Dop has been to the hot summer night events about a dozen times, and he said it’s great as a fire department to arrive and be greeted by the community waiting for them. “It’s a very, very fun event,” he said. “It’s very community oriented.” Not only do the firefighters hand out information about fire safety and prevention, they pull out the hoses and provide some watery relief from the heat. “It’s definitely the intent to cool everyone down and have a community water fight,” Van Dop said. At the Hot Summer Night events, the public can ask firefighters

questions, seek advice on summer safety and fire safety, check out the fire trucks and equipment, and do some hands-on activities. Van Dop said the younger kids especially love the fire truck tours, but the older ones look forward to the water fight. Safety information that Van Dop said the fire department wants to “drum into” the public is that “working smoke alarms save lives.” It’s important to have an adequate number of alarms – at least one per floor and near sleeping areas – and to regularly maintain them and change the batteries. “A lot of people forget about them – they do require some regular maintenance,” Van Dop said. A contributing factor to fire deaths more often than not is an issue with the fire alarms, either there are none or the batteries are dead, he added. The Maple Ridge firefighters will be in neighbourhoods on four consecutive Thursdays this month: July 10 in the 11600 block of 202B Street, July 17 at Country Lane Estates at 24299 102A Ave., July 24 at Tolmie Park at 20260 Lorne Ave., and July 31 at Docksteader Loop on Foreman Drive in Silver Valley. The fire department is also taking requests from the public to visit particular locations in August. Go to www.firemapleridge.ca to make a request.

Our View

Be a tourist around home It’s something that’s so obvious, that we tend to forget it sometimes, but we live in a pretty darned awesome place. And now is a good time for a reminder, with the sun shining down and the mercury rising, to take time out to explore your own neighbourhood. Let’s face it, playing tourist at home is a win, all around. It saves you money – no huge gas bills for those long road trips – and it saves the headaches of packing and getting stuck in traffic on long car rides. Plus, it gives you a chance to support your local merchants. While you’re out exploring, take the time to fill a picnic basket with lunch from a local deli, or enjoy a local ice cream cone, or browse the local shops for a new hat or a pair of walking sandals. If you’re not sure where to start, then let us help you. Here’s a quick list of things to enjoy this summer: • Catch an outdoor Summer Serenades concert by the Bruce James Orchestra in Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows Wednesday evenings until the end of August. • Hike or walk the plethora of trails around the community, such as the Spirea Trail or the Gold Creek trail up to the falls in Golden Ears Provincial Park. • Take in the Haney Farmers Market, complete with unique vendors and live entertainment every Saturday – usually at Memorial Peace Park. You know what? There’s way too much to list here. We have a longer list online (and we freely admit that doesn’t come close to covering it all, but it’s a decent start) at www.mrtimes.com. Search “Things to do in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.” You’ll find lots more ideas at Tourism Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows (www. mapleridge-pittmeadows.com). While you’re out exploring, stay in touch. Post your adventures and photos via Facebook. Connect with us at www. Facebook.com/MapleRidgePittMeadowsTimes. Share how awesome your home is. –B.G.

ed? Wouldn’t it be better to fix that problem first? Speed limits are necessary, but the actual number is (or should be) chosen according to safety issues. Any stretch of road has some reasonable speed that most people are comfortable driving at. Most cars today are well designed and can handle speeds well. Drivers, of course, have varying levels of skill and attentiveness. All that should be considered when setting a limit, and if the limit chosen is too low, drivers will justifiably get frustrated. Most police take that into account, and seldom ticket someone for driving a bit fast on a good road in good conditions. They do have the ability to penalize people driving too fast for the conditions, or otherwise not taking due care. If the powers that be decide that 120 km/h is appropriate for a stretch of road, then that is what it should be. I’m all for it.

Individuals, groups, and companies were recently recognized for giving people with disabilities in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows more opportunities to take part in society. Neal Khade, manager at Tim Hortons at 230th Street on Dewdney Trunk Road, recently hired two employees with disabilities. Khade attended an employers’ event where Mark Wafer – who has employed people with disabilities at his Tim Hortons in Ontario for almost 20 years – spoke about hiring people with disabilities, and Khade said “if he can do that, I can do that.” Stephanie Kluckner was hired about three months ago by Khade, and he said she is always on time and hates to miss work if she’s sick. Kluckner wipes tables and clean bathrooms, washes dishes, takes out the garbage, and greets people. “She’s always coming to me and saying Neal ‘What do want me to do?’” Khade said. Katie Durkin is another employee with disabilities who works at the Tim Hortons. “It’s a really good atmosphere. I’m surrounded by a lot of friendly employees – young employees,” Katie Durkin said about her

workplace. Khade recently received an award in the volunteer/employment category from the Maple RidgePitt Meadows Municipal Advisory Committee on Accessibility Issues (MACAI). This was the 11th year the awards were given out. The award, given out in June, “recognizes individuals that volunteer and/or promote opportunities for volunteering and employment of people with disabilities,” according to Petra Frederick, coordinator for recreation access with Maple RidgePitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services. “Tim Horton’s at 230th and Dewdney Trunk Road exemplifies opportunities, accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities, and should be acknowledged for their commitment to serve and employ a broad cross-section of our and their community,” Frederick said. The accessibility committee gives out the annual awards to “help recognizes our hometown heroes, our ‘difference makers’,” said Kevin Priebe, chair of MACAI. “Our goal is to encourage people to participate, communicate, create an atmosphere of community awareness,” Priebe said. “The importance of recognizing the people, businesses and organizations that receive these awards isn’t because they feel they should be recognized for the good they have done or that they have to be told to do these things do. They just do,” Priebe added.

Ryan Morrissette isn’t supposed to be alive. The 20-year-old Maple Ridge resident from Maple Ridge’s Dance FX studio was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of two. “I was supposed to die at eight (years-old,)” he remarked. The genetic disease causes various effects on the body, but mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. There is no cure. However, Morrissette not only survived, he thrived. Shortly after he was diagnosed, his mom decided to sign him up for dance classes “to kind of help me cardiovascularly.” He explained that his mom thought that as he got older he would eventually move to another sport like football or basketball. But that never happened. At the age of eight, Morrissette discovered hiphop. “When I found hiphop it was like I could finally express myself,” he explained. “When I’m on stage, I don’t worry about the pills I have to take, or when my physiotherapy appointment is. It’s just me, the lights, the music, and the audience.” That passion for dance has resulted in some pretty big accolades for the young athlete. Morrissette was recently the winner of the inaugural Cultural Architect Award at a ceremony in Vancouver. The award was presented by B.Brand Apparel, a company owned by dancer and choreographer Sarah Brinson. It was an award for “people who have provided a lot to their community and promoted the profession they’re a part of, as well as exemplary achievement in something that you aren’t expected to necessarily achieve,” Morrissette explained. A world-champion dancer and a third-place contestant on Canada’s Got Talent in 2012 with his dance troupe Freshh, Morrissette fit the criteria, and he is now preparing for another major step in his career. This September, he’s heading to Germany, as an assistant captain for

Beat heat with Slurpee Day Friday Down to Business by Eric Zimmer

Tomorrow is your chance to get a free small Slurpee from any 7-Eleven in town.

W

ith blue skies and temperatures in the mid to high20s in our community this week, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows 7-Eleven stores have some good news for anyone looking to beat the heat and cool down. 7-Eleven will be giving away 4,500 12-ounce

Slurpee drinks between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. tomorrow, to celebrate the convenience store chain’s 45th birthday. This anticipated tradition is one of Canada’s largest giveaways with nearly three-quarters of a million Canadians getting the chance to cool down and celebrate all things Slurpee.

To make things even more exciting this year, 7-Eleven is celebrating the Slurpee “run.” Fans are being encouraged to organize their own birthday Slurpee run, make it as creative and original as possible, then post their run photos to Slurpee.ca or Facebook. com/SlurpeeCanada to be in with a chance to win even more of their favourite drink. A pretty “cool” event, if you ask me.

today’sdrive Nissan went weird and quirky, and won

this plucky little car venturing among dinosaurs in a Lost World setting, or fording through deep snow drifts. Wishful thinking, I’m afraid, what with the 12” wheels and miniscule ground clearance.

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com • Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer

Still, it’s absolutely adorable – a puggish, puckish car that’s as cheap to run as its more-conservative Micra cousin.

In the 1980s, Nissan had something of a problem. Japanese consumers of the ‘80s were flush with cash and looking for something with a bit more zip. This was especially true of younger buyers, who took one look at the efficient Nissan March, and promptly headed for the nearest Honda dealership.

Nissan Figaro

Nissan needed something interesting. The result was four of the weirdest cars the world has ever seen.

a cartoon-sized white speedometer, and colour-matched interior panelling. In many ways, it was almost exactly like the Mini Cooper that BMW would release in 2001.

In the 1960s, Japanese culture was as buttoned-down as was the America of the ‘50s. Conservatism was the order of the day, and anyone with a wild spark in their eyes tended to head for California.

Power, to use the term in its loosest possible sense, came from a 987cc single-overhead-cam, eight-valve four-cylinder engine. It made 52hp, and came with either a five-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic.

One such young man was Nakao Sakai, an art school graduate who had become fascinated by the underground world of Japanese tattooing. The subject was taboo in rigorous Japanese society, and there was also little place for it in mainstream American society.

Happily, the Be-1 also weighed less than 1500lbs, which meant it was actually sort of interesting to drive. If you’ve ever zipped around in an original Micra, then you already know the feeling: feeble, but fun.

However, in the wild, free-spirited San Francisco of the 1960s, Sakai found his own California gold rush. He began printing t-shirts with his tattoo-based designs, and the public couldn’t get enough of them – at one point, he claims to have been making $300,000 a month.

At any rate, the quirky looks, low price, inexpensive operating costs, and cheap insurance all combined to make the Be-1 the hottest car to have in the late 1980s. The Pike Factory would only build 10,000 of them, but they received orders for at least 100,000. A lottery had to be set in place – you couldn’t just buy a Be-1, you had to win the chance to pay for one.

It didn’t last, of course, but you wonder if some of that California spirit seeped into Sakai’s consciousness to eventually inform the cars he would go on to design.

Given the success of their experiment, Nissan decided to go ahead and have Sakai design two more vehicles for them, both still based off the Micra platform. The first was the Pao.

Decades later, Sakai was working out of his own studio when he was approached by Nissan to develop a car. It was to be a concept, one of three shown at the 1987 Tokyo Motor Show. The first was called Prototype A, and it was designed by Nissan’s in-house department. The third was called Prototype B2, styled by an Italian group. Sakai’s car was called Prototype B1, and it was an instant hit.

Most common of all the Pike Factory cars – 50,000 built – the Pao is weird in the best way possible. Supposed to look a bit like a Renault 4, it has stamped-looking sheetmetal like a VW Thing, a clamshell rear hatchback, external door hinges, and rear side windows that flip up. You could also get it with a huge retractable canvas sunroof, another European touch.

It was so popular, in fact, that Nissan elected to put it into production under the name Be-1. They arranged for a subcontractor, the Aichi Machine Industry plant, to hand-assemble the bodies, and based the car on the humble March. They called the project, “Pike Factory.”

Like the Be-1, the Pao was immensely popular and sold out in three months. The one to have was probably the fivespeed manual, and the press materials of the time show

The Be-1 was probably the first retro-styled car. Compact and cute, it had round headlights like an old British car,

WEST COAST

The third car Sakai would design for Nissan was the Figaro, a compact two-seater with a retractable roof in the style of a modern Fiat 500 convertible. Svelte and stylish, the Figaro is more polished than its stablemates, but is also hilariously small.

20,000 Figaros were built, and again a lottery was required to get into one. However, it was the car’s second life that became really interesting, as grey-market examples made their way to the UK, where a cult following sprang up. While the Figaro was the last of the March-powered minicars, Pike Factory also built a quirky cargo van. The S-Cargo was powered by a 1.5L engine that made a (very slightly) healthier 73hp, and it had a roomy rear cargo area. As the name would indicate, the S-Cargo is capital-S Slow, a fact emphasized by the snail-themed hubcaps and floormats. Still, that’s all part of the charm of this weird little van, which is eye-catching, and surprisingly utilitarian. The optional removable sushi tray is a nice touch too. All four Pike Factory cars were built between 1987 and 1991, and thus they’re all importable into Canada under grey-market rules. Odds are, you’ve seen one or two of them out and about: the Eatery, a funky sushi restaurant out near UBC, has a fleet of five Figaros. In the stop-and-go of urban Vancouver traffic, these little bento-boxes have found a new home. Their modest power levels are perfectly acceptable for city use, and they’ve got tight turning circles and are super easy to park. Most of all though, they combine rarity with reliability, and parts aren’t all that hard to come by. As with other Japanese Domestic Market imports, there are privateer mechanics to help keep these oddballs rolling. If you’ve got a sense of humour, it’s all too easy to find a little extra garage space for one.

Hillsides and cliffs

Slopes can be obstacles or opportunities for imagination

maginative gardeners don’t see tough terrain quite the way other people do. Where others may see a swamp, they may see future fish ponds, boardwalks, and bog gardens. And where their chosen site is almost vertical, they visualize viewpoints, flower-filled alpine cliffs, and excellent drainage. To a husband-andwife gardening team in Chilliwack, the raw subdivision moonscape around them was a source of rough soil they could use to terrace the steep drop-off behind their newly constructed home. Contractors who had been paying to truck soil miles away were glad to dump a few loads in a nearby lot. Once the soil was waiting in the front yard, the gardeners rigged up a wooden chute that stretched from the front yard down into the rear.

Gardening by Anne Marrison

Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca

She shovelled soil into the chute, to slide it downhill. Meanwhile, far below, he shovelled the soil from the chute into a wheelbarrow and distributed it around. Today, the upper terrace is a green lawn bordered with compact shrubs where people can sit under a patio roof and view the distant mountains. The lower terrace is a mini-woodland, where a pea gravel floor meanders around raised rock-ringed beds. Water in the nearby fish pool has high levels of oxygen after its swift jour-

ney downhill via a little stream. The bottom of a slope is a natural spot for fish ponds and the freshening of the water doesn’t have to be done by a simple stream. Where the slope is very steep and faces the house,

a rock wall plus water can be quite spectacular. That is what two Surrey gardeners did with their rugged, weedy front yard. Most of it is now a large fishpond backed by a rock wall where water seeps and trickles and is punctuated by two waterfalls. They don’t have to be large. Most gardeners with streams running down to a pond manage to add a large rock or two, or a couple of steps over which water cascades. Rocky cliff-sides have other uses, too. A Kamloops gardener couldn’t plant the bare rock cliff which stretched

across the far end of his back garden. But he enjoyed the way it prolonged his garden season by storing the sun’s heat and then releasing it during cold nights. Where slopes are formed by clay or sand, stability can be a huge issue. Steps can be one solution. A North Vancouver gardener with a big, sloping yard built a long line of steps which she broke into sections by adding landings at intervals. They were emphasized by pergolas supporting climbing vines. In the early stages of planning their North

Surrey garden, two gardeners plotted out routes for electrical lines along steps. That made it possible to install lights under the risers, so people could navigate the garden at night. Deep-rooted trees can also add stability to slopes. But how deep the roots plunge depends on the soil. Even deep-rooted trees have problems unless the soil is also deep. Some of the most effective stabilizing trees are oaks, lirodendrons, and walnuts. But they need care in placement, because they ultimately grow so large that they dominate and shade small gardens.

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

beekeeping events at Allco Park in conjunction with Alouette River Management Society. Inmates at the Alouette Regional Correctional Centre have even helped build some of her equipment. As we talk, she tells me she’s off to pick up donated plants for the bee-friendly onsite garden – which reminds me why I called her. How do we save the bees? What can I do? We’ve been hearing a lot about the neonicotinoids that disorientate bees and destroy colonies.

The solution is simple, I figure. Ban them and we’ll all be fine, right? But, not so fast. There are other things at play like genetic modification, a lack of bee diversity, even mites. Loretta points me toward Mark Winston, an SFU prof who has just released an intriguing book called Bee Time: Lessons Learned from the Hive. He agrees the pesticide can be devastating, but most often because of how it’s used. Yes, he’d wish an end to unnecessary chemicals, but cautions seeing this as a panacea in North America

where we are addicted to industrial faming and won’t support small farming techniques, like those used in Europe, where the neonicotinoids are already banned. He echoes Loretta’s message: We need to slow down, be patient, and encourage small scale farming methods. It won’t be fast, or cheap, but it may just save us all. We sip our drinks and keep chatting – the bee

balm plants and the busyness can wait. I hold up the newly extracted golden honey to the light and turn it very, very slowly. Suddenly, there seems to be plenty of time.

Charity Race

Ridge, Pitt drivers race for Ronald House A pair of local race enthusiasts will be part of a charity event in Mission this weekend. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

Twelve years ago, James Nadolny witnessed his first motorbike race at the Mission Raceway, and thought, “I could do that.” More than a decade later, the Maple Ridge resident hasn’t lost his need for speed. “I love racing,” he said. Though he developed a love for motorbike racing, Nadolny made the switch to four wheels this past winter, when he and a friend bought identical cars and spent the winter fixing them up. “There comes a time when you’ve got to give up the big bike,” he quipped.

Brent Martin photo

James Nadolny will race this weekend too. And this weekend Nadolny will hit the race track during the “Race for the House” event at Mission Raceway in support of Ronald McDonald House BC. The two-day event will feature some of the best wheel-towheel racing action in the Pacific Northwest, with both open wheel

(formula) and closed wheel (sedans). The feature race for the weekend will be the fifth Family Affair Racing Team Formula Vee Invitational. Highlights include the “Hot Laps for Kids” (in which fans, families, and kids can purchase two hot laps in a high performance car, driven by a professional driver with all proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House BC), a poker tournament, and a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to support seriously ill children and their families. Joining him for the event will be Pitt Meadows racing enthusiast, Roland Stec. Stec, who started racing in 1980, is the vice-president of the Sports Car Club of British Columbia. He explained that his club regularly puts on races and has been racing at the Mission track for a

number of years. He added that the club has done charity events in the past, but hasn’t for a couple of years. “We were looking to do another charity event, and this one almost fell into our lap,” he said. “Our club president has a friend who is involved with Ronald McDonald House, and this is the first year we’ve been involved with the charity.” He added that Ronald McDonald House “is really eager and willing to put lots of boots on the ground to help out and really get involved with the event.” He, the club is “dipping its toes in the water” and if all goes well, the plan is to build the event up bigger and better for next year. Stec has no plans to slow down anytime soon. “I love the people in the sport. It’s a great family atmosphere.”

Softball

Girls Thunder ball makes noise at Island games A local team took top spot in their division at a recent tournament.

The Ridge Meadows Thunder U-16 girls softball team won the Bantam C Provincial gold medal this weekend in Port Alberni. The team went undefeated through the round robin stage of the tournament. They defeated the Chilliwack Stealers 10-2, Alberni Valley Blazers 3-0, Parksville Rage 13-1 and the Cloverdale Kaos 9-0. The Thunder got the number one seed as the top eight (of 16 teams) moved on to the double knockout playoffs. In game one of the playoffs, they defeated the Campbell River Crushers with a

solid victory of 9-1. Game two saw them take Kamloops S.W.A.T. 8-2. They then moved on to the semi-final game and a rematch with the Stealers from Chilliwack They defeated Chilliwack by a convincing score of 9-1 and moved on to the final and another rematch with the host team Alberni Valley Blazers. The Thunder scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on their way to a 7-0 victory. In total, the girls outscored their opponents 68-7 over the eight games. “They really dominated the whole tournament,” said their coach Dave Hill.

Maple Ridge couple Martyn Garner and Lynne Bradley took a Mediterranean cruise, stopping off at a number of exciting locations including the Acropolis in Greece, the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome, and the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey. Garner explained that the Turkish palace is a great-walled complex on the shore of the Bosphorus and Golden Horn and it was once the residence of the Ottoman Sultans. They also stopped off at the crater’s edge at the top of Mount Vesuvius, which erupted in 79 A.D. and buried the Roman city of Pompeii. At each stop, they had a picture taken of them holding a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES.
