A makeshift memorial has been erected on the Silver Bridge on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows, paying tribute to a swimmer who drowned Monday in the Alouette River.
PUSH-PULL-DRAG
A handwritten “Rest In Peace” note is taped to the railing of the Silver Bridge on Harris Road. Just a few feet away a small bouquet of lilies, a stuffed penguin, and a pink dragon are tied to the metal structure overlooking the Alouette River where a man drowned this weekend. It’s a makeshift memorial paying tribute to 44-year-old Jagit Khangura of Port Coquitlam. He was swimming just south east of Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. Initial reports indicate he was swimming

across the river, south to north, when he ran into difficulty, went under the surface about 30 feet from the northern shoreline, and subsequently drowned. His family was nearby on the shore but unable to assist. Numerous bystanders also tried to help, but “sadly” to no avail, said Pitt Meadows assistant fire chief Rob Chatton. Despite the tragedy, the assistant fire chief was particularly impressed with all the people who came to the family’s aid immediately. “So many tried to do what they could, which was just fantastic,” Chatton said. “We need to recognize the people who helped out,” he said. “We don’t always get a chance to thank them personally, but when these people step up the way they did, we want to recognize that. There are good people out there and they do good things.” • Much more at www.mrtimes.com, search “Chatton”

Music
Prairie-born singers come to Maple Ridge
Three performers are touring Western Canada with classical and operatic pieces as part of the show. by Ronda Payne
RCMP superintendent assures residents that a pair of isolated killings were not gang related. rhooper@mrtimes.com
They all originated from the prairies, but came out west to refine their musical talents. Now, Courtney Bridge, Ryan Goetz, and Rayne Beveridge will be sharing their skills with their hometowns, as well as Beveridge’s community of Maple Ridge. Rayne Beveridge “It is eight cities,” Beveridge said of the Western Shakedown Classical Concert Tour. “From Saskatoon to downtown Vancouver.” Having worked together previously, Beveridge is familiar with performing opera with Bridge and is regularly accompanied by Goetz. Their shared skills are more commonplace in downtown Vancouver, but as Beveridge explained, the trio wanted to take their music to their roots. “I’m originally from Saskatchewan,” Beveridge said. “I’ve been involved with Maple Ridge for the past seven years... [we are] taking [our skills] back to our home communities instead of keeping them to downtown Vancouver.” The Maple Ridge show will feature classical pieces as well as operatic scenes. “It’s exciting this year with myself and Courtney performing together,” Beveridge noted. “We’ll actually be doing two opera duets.” The mixture of music will also feature piano solos by Goetz, who too, is originally from Saskatchewan. His work has included the Saskatoon Opera, the Greystone Singers, and more locally, Vancouver’s Arts Umbrella. Bridge hails from Airdrie, Alberta originally, but shares her Soprano gifts with the Vancouver community, having performed as a soloist for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The Maple Ridge stop of the Western Shakedown Classical Concert Tour will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at Westacres at 23575 124th Ave. Tickets are $15 and are available online at www.brownpapertickets. com/event/776490 or at the door. Also performing at Westacres, and fresh from her appearance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, will be Jaclyn Guillou and her jazz quintet on Thursday Aug. 14, at 7 p.m.

Neither of the murders in Maple Ridge last week were random, leaving the community’s top cop offering assurances to residents that it’s still a safe community. “I think we can take some solace in the fact that both of these incidents were not random acts of violence,” said RCMP Supt. Dave Fleugel, referring to the shooting death of Trevor Koehler last week and the stabbing of Stacey Raymond King in downtown Haney this past weekend. “Although tragic outcomes in both cases, the suspects likely had some specific motive, as all information points to both being targeted against the victims,” Fleugel elaborated. “I was optimistic that 2014 would be a year where we did not have any murders and the fact that we had our first two in the span of a week was simply an awful coincidence but both were totally unrelated to each other,” he said. Koehler, 33, was shot repeatedly on the doorstep of his Albion home, in the 10300 block of 240th Street, just before 10 p.m. on July 29.

The third annual Osprey Day goes down this Saturday at Osprey Village in Pitt Meadows, and event organizer Anahi English said the event offers something for everyone. “We really encourage it to be a fun, family event,” she said. In addition to the businesses in the village, [See related story, Developing Ideas, page A13] there will be live and local music, entertainers, kids games, an all-day barbecue, beer garden, and 12 to 15 other vendors on site. In the past, the event has taken place over the course of two shorter days, but this year the decision was made to extend the hours and condense it into a single day, said English, who also owns the Stomping Grounds Coffee Shop. The event is a Pitt Meadows Community Association initiative, and is entirely volunteer-run with no special funding. Everyone is welcome to come down and check out the festivities – whether

alling all buccaneers! On Wednesday, Aug. 13, adults can feel like kids again when they enjoy an Adult Pirate Pak at the Maple Ridge White Spot. The restaurant – along with 61 others throughout B.C. – is hosting the seventh annual fundraiser that gives $2 from the sale of every Pirate Pak to Zajac Ranch for Children in Stave Falls. Zajac is an established B.C. charity that gives kids and young adults – who are coping with life-threatening illnesses and chronic disabilities – a memorable summer camp experience from Aug. 18 to 22. The week of camp along the shores of the Stave Lake includes activities that range from horseback riding to kayaking. “Our long-standing partnership with White Spot provides a direct benefit to kids in need,” said Zajac founder Mel Zajac. “It’s so rewarding to see their faces light up when they try new camp activities, which are specially tailored to kids with special needs.” “Pirate Pak Day is one of our busiest and most exciting days of the year,” said John Jahangiri, manager of Maple Ridge White Spot. “It’s great to see so many kids and adults from the community enjoying Pirate Paks in support of a good cause.” Last year the White Spot Maple Ridge served more than 760 Pirate Paks to patrons – an increase of more than 30 per cent from previous years.

Our View
Economy can’t trump safety Competition drives innovation, it hammers down prices for consumers, and it generates economic growth. We hear this mantra over and over again from business groups and government. But until something like the Mount Polley tailings pond disaster, we can easily forget the other side of competition – it can drive industries to speed ahead without concern for the consequences. We already know the collapse of the retaining wall has caused a local state of emergency, has deprived nearby townsfolk of their clean drinking water, and has dumped uncounted tons of contaminated sand into one of British Columbia’s pristine lakes. What caused Monday’s breach in the retaining wall? It remains unknown as of this writing. All we can say for sure is that it wasn’t an obvious cause – no heavy rains, no major quakes, no accidental collisions by bulldozers. Which probably means that we’ll have to look at the way those retaining walls around every tailings pond in B.C. are constructed. And there are numerous ponds and catch basins where arsenic, lead, mercury, copper, and other metals and harmful chemicals used in the mining process. That will be an expensive proposition, but it has to be done, and it can’t be delayed by excuses, or budgetary concerns, or fears that it will cause some kind of “unreasonable” hurdle for the mining industry. It’s not unreasonable for British Columbians to expect that they’ll be able to turn on their taps and get clean, fresh, potable water. It’s not unreasonable to expect that we’ll have rivers and lakes that can support an ecosystem of fish, birds, mammals and forests. There are places in politics for compromise, but not for pollution that endangers our present and our future. – M.C..

A dog-kills-dog story from Pitt Meadows last week, which caused an eruption of emotion among TIMES readers, took an unexpected turn when tears and hugs ended up being exchanged between the previously unknown neighbours as both couples came together to mourn the passing of their canines. “Now that is truly an act of forgiveness and love. Humanity at its best.” – Joe Robinsmith “I am happy to hear that peace has been made. And my heart goes out to both couples who lost their beloved companions.” – Travis-Magda Romanow “My heart goes out to both couples. I support rescuing dogs even though I know there is a risk. I have an adopted dog and she is lovely.” – Catherine O’Brien “RIP Tucker!! You look so much like our Tiki!! I can’t imagine losing her!! All my best to the family! You are in my prayers and thoughts!” – Winnie Raine “While I sympathize with loss of the little dog, I don’t think the couple understand or know much about dogs to give advice such as asking the other couple to ‘obtain a dog from a reputable breeder that could be brought up and trained properly from the start.’ Rescue dogs are trainable and make good pets, no matter what breed they are. Even a reputable breeder or pet shop dog if not raised well by humans, do turn bad. There is no good or bad dog, just bad owners..” – Juliana Vincent-Phillips

Education
Direct dollars to education Dear Editor,
Finance Minister Mike de Jong has just announced that all children under the age of 13 will receive a day care subsidy of $40 a day if teachers remain on strike in September. So, for your average class of 24 kids, this would amount to $4,800 per week for what may be an explosion of illegal unregulated day cares with unqualified staff, where kids will be warehoused to ensure maximum profitability with little or no concern for well-being. This is a disaster in the making, and some lawyers must be waiting in the wings – just licking their chops. It seems to me this $40 per day would be far better spent as an investment into our public education system and that it would go a long way in settling the current impasse with the BCTF.

The increase in speed limits for BC is a step in the right direction for most BC motorists BY BRENDAN McALEER
brendanmcaleer@gmail.com
•
Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer
This month, the BC government raised speed limits across the province on rural highways. Most of the changes were a bump of about 10km/h, including portions of the Sea-to-Sky now set at 90km/h, and some parts of the Coquihalla now at 120km/h. Immediately, everybody started driving at the speed they were already driving at anyway. Despite protests from police groups and some environmental groups over the potential impact on safety and pollution, the change is a welcome one. The thing is, it’s not really a change in speed on our roads, it’s just a change of the numbers on those funny little signs you see on the side of the road. What? That’s how fast we’re supposed to be going? Oops. Speed limits, as Homer Simpson famously observed, are just a suggestion – like pants. At least that’s the way most North Americans seem to view them, with the average speed travelled on the road routinely exceeding the posted limit. Routinely – that’s the word to focus on. Rather than the limit being an absolute ceiling that no-one would trespass over, it’s become the baseline speed which drivers seldom drift below. It’s almost a lower limit, rather than an upper one. Moving the speed limit up, you might imagine, would just cause everyone to drive 10km/h faster than they did before, but the evidence indicates that simply doesn’t happen. BC has raised speed limits before, on the Shuswap corridor, and average speeds did not change one whit. Collisions were actually reduced over the time period, even though traffic increased. People tend to drive at a speed that they feel reasonable and prudent for the road conditions dependent on the time, the weather, and the traffic level. The same person will drive more slowly on a crowded rainy afternoon than they will on a bright and sunny morning with nobody else on the road. Of course they would – that just makes sense.
Traffic, it turns out, has a natural flow, and while we need guidance when approaching a tight corner or an area with cross-traffic, drivers tend to travel at the speed everyone else does. It’s the old George Carlin line: everyone who drives faster than you is a maniac; everyone who drives slower is an idiot. Thus, setting speed limits below what people ordinarily travel makes maniacs of us all. It’s especially frustrating when a speed trap crops up in an area where everybody is travelling faster than the limit every single day – who gets culled from the herd? For instance, last week there was a speed trap set up under the Lonsdale overpass, facing Westbound. On Monday, I followed an unmarked police Tahoe on the same route, and as I slowed to something approaching the speed limit, they continued on at a rate that would have fetched a ticket costing several hundred dollars and points on your license. Were they driving dangerously? No: it was the speed everybody else was doing. It could be argued that it was me, dawdling in the slow lane that was causing the hazard by creating a variance in traffic speeds. Frustrating? You bet – I may have bitten a chunk out of my steering wheel. Happily, the raised speed limits also reduce somewhat the further frustration of our 40km/h excessive speeding law. While the principle is relatively sound – surely anyone travelling that much over the flow of traffic is at super-maniac status – it makes passing an outright hassle. Travelling back from Calgary a while ago, I was stuck behind a slow-moving RV on a winding part of the Trans-Canada. As the brief passing lane opened up, the RV sped up – they always do, don’t they? Getting around him – if there’d been a sudden speed trap, I might have got a ticket, but the guy in the minivan behind me might have had to walk home. Behind us, the RV again slowed to sub-limit speeds as the bends came up. That extra 10km/h cushion would help.
I’d say that if the speed limit was correctly set, ninety percent of people wouldn’t even think of brushing their brake-pedal if they saw an officer with a radar gun on the side of the road. Too-low limits create an us-andthem cat-and-mouse game with the highway patrol, which shouldn’t be the point. Do we need patrols to catch those who would double the limit using the road as their own personal racetrack? Absolutely, but those folks are going to be out there breaking the law by fifty or a hundred kilometres an hour, and they’re going to do it whatever the limit is set at, high or low. If I’d my druthers, I’d alter every single highway speed sign in BC to read “-ish” as in, “100km/h-ish”. The speeding ticket would be outlawed, and there would be no more speed traps. Ah, but there’s a second part of this plan. Officers of the law would receive special training allowing them to issue tickets for being a jackass. For example: 110Km/h up the wider parts of the Sea-to-Sky at 6 a.m. on a perfect summer Sunday in a car with good brakes and tires? Not being a jackass. Or 100Km/h on the Upper Levels in a monsoon on three bald tires and a donut-spare? Can I see your license and registration, please? Using your cell phone while driving would earn you double jackass points, and drinking and driving would receive a punishment slightly more strict - like being fired out of a catapult from the top of Grouse. Earn enough jackass points, and you’d be required to affix a large paper-mâché donkey to the roof of your Audi. Oh, and I’d bring back the pillory too, and replace ticket-based revenue-generation by selling rotten cabbages to throw. It’d be a grand day out – bring the kids! It’s a lovely thought, but enough of the flights of fancy. The increase in speed limits for BC is a step in the right direction for most BC motorists. It’ll create slightly safer roads, let people drive at a reasonable rate of speed without feeling like a criminal and allow us to all get where we’re going safely. If that isn’t the point of having rules for the road, I don’t know what is.

ith the recent offering of 12 new storefronts at Osprey Village in Pitt Meadows, 10 are now open and adding to the artistic and creative flair of the village. From tattoo artists and photographers to flower and fibre artists, this eclectic mix of talent is contributing to a vibrant riverside village. Rebecca Fisher, the Osprey Village artist-in-residence, mentioned that Osprey Village reminds her of Dundarave Village in West Vancouver. Much like Dundarave Village, Osprey Village is a great place to escape to have lunch or dinner with a friend, enjoy some personal pampering, explore a mix of oneof-a-kind specialty stores or just sit by the water and relax. When you walk into Rebecca’s studio, for instance, you can’t miss the brightly painted chair with a bin of yarn and knitting needles beside it. There is a sign on top of the yarn that says, “Please sit & knit.” It’s subtle suggestions like this that create a welcoming environment. Across the street, Ode to a Bloom owners, Debbie Odin and Joanne Lethbridge, are pleased to be back at Osprey Village with their floral boutique and are enjoying the creative synergies amongst the store owners. The fresh, sweet scent of the flowers when you walk into the shop is amazing. The outside is even more amazing with their beautiful display of plants, brightly coloured flowers and unique embellishments.
FAMILY & COSMETIC DENTISTRY Osprey Village’s artist-in-residence Rebecca Fisher has this invitation set up in front of her studio. Two commercial opportunities remain at Osprey Village. The lots range from 9,000 square feet to approximately 19,000 square feet. The vision for these spaces is for a chapel and a neighbourhood pub. This growing riverside location is surrounded by new neighbourhoods, a diverse trading area of more than 25,000 people within 10 minutes of the village, and also home to the very popular South Bonson Community Centre. The Pitt Greenway Trail, which can be entered at Osprey Village, is a popular destination for walkers, runners, and cyclists and a major generator of visitors to the village throughout the year. If you haven’t had a chance to visit Osprey Village yet, a great opportunity is right around the corner. Osprey Days is this Saturday, Aug. 9 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. This is a community-inspired event for all ages featuring local vendors, kids’ games, a barbecue, and live music by The Greazy Lizards. Be sure to bring your chairs and picnic blanket to enjoy the full day of festivities. Osprey Village is located on Barnston View Road in Pitt Meadows. Enjoy your visit.

Playoffs begin Maple Ridge Burrards lacrosse squad kicks off the post-season Wednesday night. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
For the first time in two years, the Maple Ridge Burrards lacrosse squad is in the playoffs. The team, which sits second in the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) standings, began round one of a best-of-seven series last night when they hit the road and faced off against the secondplace-ranked Burnaby Lakers. Results from the game were not available by the TIMES press deadline. Game two will go down at 7:45 p.m., this Saturday at Planet Ice in Albion. The teams have met three times this season, with Burnaby defeating the Burrards in two of the games. The Burrards will play the first two games of the series without the watchful eye of their coach Chris Gill, who is away coaching a girls team at the national lacrosse championships. Frankie Scigliano will be the last line of defense in net for the Burrards. Scigliano was first in the WLA this year in save percentage and goals against average.
When your mother, aunt, and sister all participate in water polo, it’s a safe bet you likely will too. Such is the case for Carmen Eggens. Now based in Montreal along with her sister Monika, the Pitt Meadows native has been competing with the Canadian Senior Women’s national water polo team for the past five years. The pair are also graduates of the University of Hawaii, where they both played in the NCAA on a scholarship, with Carmen graduating in May and Monika graduating in December 2013. This summer has seen them compete in two separate competitions, the first one being a two-week intercontinental tournament in Riverside, California. It was here that they qualified for the world league superfinal tournament in China, where they finished in sixth place.
“It was good,” said Eggens of the tournament. “We’re (the team is) getting more comfortable with all the international competition, and we’re improving,” she added. Next up for the team is the Canada Cup and Holiday Cup which take place in December, but Eggens said her focus is even further down the road. “Next summer we’ll be participating in the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, as well as the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Kazan, Russia.” And though these events are both big deals in themselves, there is an ultimate goal that remains: A medal finish at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. “We missed out qualifying for London 2012 – by one goal,” Carmen recalled. “So now we are working towards 2016.” The pair have a little bit of time in Montreal until other members of Team Canada join them there and the team gets down to business and starts training on Sept. 8. Carmen and Monika aren’t the only ones in their family who have kept busy in the pool, however. Their mom Cathy, and their
aunt Gerri Willms also grew up in Pitt Meadows playing water polo with the Haney Neptunes. “Our grandparents named the club,” explained Carmen. Cathy and Gerri have been part of masters swimming for years and decided to challenge themselves and get back in the water recently. The pair have been training hard throughout the year with the Pacific Storm Water Polo Club as well as HYACK Masters Swimming, Carmen said. And this summer, both Cathy and Gerri competed at the FINA world masters tournament in Montreal. “They came in second and earned the silver medal with the Calgary Splash 50-plus team,” Carmen noted. Monika and Carmen will return home to Pitt Meadows on Aug. 23 for a two-week visit.

Ridge siblings play ball on national stage A pair of local softball sisters are competing in two different national tournaments. by Eric Zimmer
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Call them the dynamic duo. Courtney and Taylor De Adder are two Maple Ridge siblings at the top of their game in the sport of fastpitch. “It’s something you can keep getting better at,” said 14-year-old Taylor. And it’s this attitude that’s helped Taylor and her 16-year-old sister Courtney contribute to the success of their respective teams. The pair, who each began their career playing with the Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Pride club around the age of five, now play for the White Rock Renegades, with Courtney on the 98 team, and Taylor on the 00 team. Both teams have made an impact in their respective divisions this year, and both are now set to compete in nationals. In fact, Taylor and the 00 team kicked off their tournament yesterday in White Rock and the competition runs until this Sunday, Aug. 10. “We had provincials in Victoria,
Eric Zimmer/TIMES
Courtney and Taylor De Adder showed off their hardware from recent tournaments last week. The pair are each competing nationally this month in B.C. and Ontario. and our team won it,” explained Taylor. “The top four teams qualify for nationals.” Going into the nationals, Taylor was feeling confident. “I think our team can pull it off,” she said. “We have a great hitting team, a great fielding team, – not a lot of teams can score runs against us.” Though Courtney and her team will also compete at nationals, the route to the championships was a
little different. “Instead of doing provincials, we had a national qualifier that our team got put into and any teams that wanted to go to nationals were in that tournament,” she explained. The top three teams from the tournament advanced to nationals and Courtney’s team nabbed the first spot. Courtney’s team is also competing a little further away – Brampton Ont. to be exact, the
week after Taylor. There’s also a certain degree of familiarity with the competition that Courtney believes will work to the team’s advantage. “We’ve been there (nationals) once, and we kind of know what it’s all about,” she said. “It’s a little more competitive coming back as an older team, but we have a really good shot, and know what it takes to get there, and succeed.” It will be work before play for Courtney however, as this week she is umpiring at Taylor’s tournament too. Playing in the same league does result in an element of following in her sister’s footsteps said Taylor, but Courtney pointed out the pair don’t get overly compared with one another due to the different positions they each play. “She’s a pitcher, I play second base,” said Courtney. There can be elements of sibling competition when it comes to things like whose team goes further in tournaments and things like that, Taylor noted. “It depends on the day,” quipped Courtney. At the end of the day though, both are on the field for the same reason. “It’s doing something you love,” said Taylor.

The top coat, made of polyurethane, is extremely resistant to knocks and wear, retains its shape, and is completely water resistant. This means that GATORLOC can also be fitted in bathrooms, kitchens, toilets and saunas with no problem at all.
The unique and patented click basis with the nicely spaced click elements along the 4 sides ensures quick and easy fitting in all directions. The durable acoustic dampening bottom coat made of PVC not only suppresses sounds, but also ensures that GATORLOC sounds like real wood.
The wear layer is made of PVC. Under this layer there is a printed film in PVC, onto which the designs are printed.
GATORLOC most certainly does not contain harmful softeners such as dioctyl phthalate (DOP). These are replaced by environmental friendly components conform with the toughest European regulations.
A solid PVC backing serves as a mould in which the top coats are placed and is also the connection to the click basis.
