House prices continue attracting buyers

No major fluctuation in the costs of local homes means this community is still appealing for first-time buyers. by Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com

Home prices in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are rising, but not at the same rate as other Lower Mainland communities. That’s not all bad, though, said Darcy McLeod, president-elect of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver and a realtor with Re-Max Results Realty. It continues to make this a desirable place

to buy a home, he explained. The average house price in Maple Ridge during July was $474,300, up three-per-cent compared to July 2013. Meanwhile, Pitt Meadows saw a 2.7-per-cent increase in the cost of a single-family home to $519,000. Meanwhile, the price for a townhouse slipped 2.1 per cent in Maple Ridge to $266,600, while it’s up 4.2 per cent in Pitt Meadows to $325,900 for the same period. Apartments in Maple Ridge saw a 2.2- percent drop to $168,800, while Pitt Meadows saw a 5.4-per-cent increase to $246,500. Those numbers indicate it’s neither a buyers’ or seller’s market, but rather a more balanced market, McLeod said, describing Pitt Meadows as a more popular place for

PUSH-PULL-DRAG

new homebuyers, while Maple Ridge is still more affordable. “Pitt Meadows in general is pretty desirable because it’s a 10 minute less commute time [to Vancouver],” said the 10-year real estate veteran. “In Maple Ridge, the western part is more desirable, again because of the commute time.” While he describes the market as balanced, certain homes are selling well. “Properties up to $475,000 are selling quickly because there are a lot of first-time buyer activity in the market,” McLeod said, explaining that price could get a buyer into a late 1980s built single-family home locally, possibly with a one-bedroom basement suite for family or as a mortgage helper.

Equine rescue

Horse lovers legacy lives on

A Pitt Meadows mother recently fulfilled her late daughter’s wish. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

Last year, Hunter Birosh took a trip to Cuba with her dad, Jack. Upon her return to Canada she noticed a skin rash. Concerned but not overly worried, she and her parents visited doctors and dermatologists to try and determine the cause, but with no luck. Then her feet started swelling. “That was the big ‘what is going on here?’ moment,” said her mom, Heather. The Birosh’s paid a visit to the hospital, where Hunter underwent CAT scans and tests. The results were not good. The 19-year-old Pitt Meadows resident was diagnosed with stage four adrenal cortical carcinoma – a rare form of cancer that originates in the cortex (or steroid hormone-producing tissue) of the adrenal gland. What followed was “week after week of chemotherapy,” a number of different operations, as well as various treatments. That went on until the end of July – nine months after her diagnosis – when the Pitt Meadows teen passed away. Throughout her life, and even during her time in hospital, Hunter was a huge animal lover. “She loved horses, dogs, and nature,” Mom said. So much so that before she fell ill, Hunter was a volunteer and sponsored a child at the North Therapeutic Riding Association (NFTRA), whose mandate is to provide professional therapeutic equine activities aimed to enrich the lives of physically, emotionally and developmentally challenged individuals. Hunter was also a huge fan of J&M Acres Horse Rescue, an all-breed private rescue facility located in Maple Ridge that began in 1995. An employee of McDonald’s, Hunter was putting cash aside from each cheque, with the hopes of being able to make a significant donation out of her own pocket to the facility,

explained rescue centre’s Amy Lizee. But, due to Hunter’s circumstances, she never got that chance. So, this past Monday, Hunter’s wish was realized thanks to her mom and aunt who donated $500 to the rescue. As it happened, a staff member was en route to pick up a mare that was slated for slaughter, Lizee said. “Before Heather left, she was able to meet our new rescue: a gorgeous pinto mare.” “The generous donation from Heather not only saved this beautiful [mare’s] life, but has also sponsored her while in our care,” she added. The donation is just part of honouring Hunter’s legacy of

doing good deeds for others, human or animal, said her mother. “She would do anything for her friends, family, or animals,” Mom said. “Anything to do with horses, she loved,” added her father. And though the months after her diagnosis were tough, and their daughter is no longer with them, Mom insisted Hunter’s legacy will live on. A trust fund has been set up in Hunter’s name at Vancity with all funds going to NFTRA.

I would like to make a public apology to all affected by my actions of Friday the 8th of August, 2014. My choices led to police involvement and unfortunately some grief for a Chinese home-stay student as well as her family and the family of a local man. I was intoxicated and involved many innocent people through my actions.

Heather Birosh photos

During her final days before her death last month, Hunter Birosh spent some time visiting with a horse she used to ride (top). The Pitt Meadows resident’s love for horses began from an early age (left) and a donation was made by her mom this week to one of Hunter’s favourite causes.

More than just helping out, Heather said her daughter taught her and Jack some lessons about life. “Everyone thinks their invincible, but the truth is none of us know how long we have on this earth,” Mom said. “Be thankful for every day and make the most out of every moment,” added Jack. And, said her parents, it was this mantra with which Hunter lived her life. “She smiled right to the very end,” Mom recalled.

Our View

Williams still reaching out How does a man who got millions – perhaps billions – of people laughing out loud fall into such a state of despair that he could take his own life? Robin Williams’s suicide has shocked and perplexed people around the world. He was such a funny guy… and talented… and sought after… and loved. He had a knack for getting to the heart of human foibles and infirmities, and turning them inside out so we could laugh at ourselves with impunity. He understood his audience – and his audience was practically everybody. His comedy lay in the fact that he truly understood the human condition, and was able to reach into our dark corners and draw us out into the light. And perhaps that’s the answer to the question we posed at the outset: he understood too well what lay in our darkest corners, because he often lived in those dark corners himself. Williams suffered from bouts of deep depression, and it’s no surprise that he was going through one of those episodes at the time of his death. And once again, he may be pulling us out of our dark corner – but this time without any hint of humour. Perhaps the great comedian, through the massive grief that his passing has incurred, will wake us up to the fact – not opinion, not speculation, not suggestion – that depression is a disease, not a choice to feel miserable, and certainly not a mood that you just need to “snap out of.” Without treatment, it can be a fatal condition – a terminal illness. Some depression can be cured, like a bug, but more often it requires ongoing management, like diabetes. The first step to treatment is to reach out and speak to someone. And the second step is for those of us lucky enough to be healthy today to reach back, and just try to understand. – B.G.

Polley Mine spill

Likely choking on optimism Dear Editor,

Letters Premier Christy Clark assuaged the concerns of resito dents of the Polley Mine spill the late last week by telling them, “Our hearts are with you.” With that statement, I’m sure that the good people of Likely drew a collective sigh of relief. Furthermore, Environment Minister Bill Bennett added to the optimism by boldly announcing that “the waste water may not be toxic.” Perhaps these mine tailings are nothing more than Willy Wonka chocolate syrup

waiting to be packaged for B.C. consumers. In the First Nations world, the passing of the pipe is a sacred ceremony which connects this world to the spirit world. When they passed the pipe to Minister Bennett for a smoke, he choked on it, and quickly gestured for a bottle of water. The pipe also had to be re-lit a few times. Some would call this Karma. Christy Clark thinks she’s hit this one out of the park. The “old ones” may have something to say about this.

Hydro electricity

Site C best environmental option Dear Editor,

I am writing to clarify some information about the Site C Clean Energy Project [Sightseers oppose dam Site C, July 29 Letters, TIMES]. BC Hydro is proposing Site C to meet long-term electricity demands in B.C. which are forecast to increase by 40 per cent in the next 20 years. BC Hydro undertook a comprehensive analysis of alternative resource options – including wind, solar, and natural gas – and found that Site C provides the best combination of financial, technical, environmental, and economic development attributes to meet growing customer demand for electricity. An independent joint review panel

concluded that “Site C would be the least expensive of the alternatives” and “would produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions per unit of energy than any source save nuclear.” The panel found that “the permanent loss of the agricultural production of the Peace River valley bottomlands included in the local assessment area of the project is not, by itself and in the context of B.C. or western Canadian agricultural production, significant.” Subject to approvals, Site C would be a source of clean, renewable, and costeffective electricity for more than 100 years into the future. To learn more about Site C, please visit www.sitecproject.com.

Mail-out’s average meaningless Dear Editor,

I recently received another one of Mr. Kamp’s silly mail-outs. In it he states, that “our conservative government is standing up for hard-working Canadian families.” Is it really? His first item is: “keeping taxes low.” The Harper government is keeping taxes low, but not for hard-working, average Canadian families. According to JeanDenis Frechette, the new PMO’s Chief Parliamentary Budget Officer, Canadians have an extra $30 billion due to tax cuts. That averages to about $1,000 per person.

Only, the “average” is meaningless and completely misleading. The top 20 per cent of income earners got $10.9 billion, or 36 per cent, of the total tax reduction, while the bottom 20 per cent – the ones who need it most – got only $1.9 billion, or six per cent, of the tax cuts. The lowest 20 per cent of “hard-working Canadian families” gained less than $500 in tax reduction, while the richest 20 per cent took away nearly $2,000. It is also debatable whether $30 billion of tax cuts – and this doesn’t include an estimated loss

What you’re telling us on Facebook

A single mother is expressing gratitude to several young men – whom she calls heroes – who came to her aid when fighting a fire in her Maple Ridge home last week.

“Kudos to the young men who came to the rescue! Bravo, and well done!” – Diane Zutz “Thankful Deshaun and family are ok!” – Cheryl Rogers Baydo “I really hope this family finds a new home with respectful landlords. Crap happens it wasn’t intentional that’s what insurance is for. Throwing out a young family is a low life move in my opinion.” – Joleen Watson “What a great story!!!!”

of revenue of $12.6 billion each year from deep corporate tax cuts – are such a great benefit to Canadians. They are lost revenue and lost services: income lost for better child care, elder care, pharmacare, job training programs, lower tuition fees, veterans’ benefits or affordable housing, more downloading of health care funding to the provinces… These tax cuts make the rich richer, and the poor keep on struggling. It has been estimated that a national child care program would cost $2 billion, national pharmacare $3.8 billion, long-term health care for seniors $ 5.6 billion, and investment in urban infrastructure and public transit $9.5 billion. Throw in $1.5 billion for affordable housing and $2.9 billion to balance the budget, and you still have lots left over. So Mr. Kamp shouldn’t tell us that his government is standing up for hardworking families.

hen Mark Sippola pitched the idea of a fundraiser to Maple Ridge’s Delizie Italane Bakery and Bistro to raise cash for a cause near and dear to his heart, he said the owners jumped at the chance. “When I approached the owners (of Delizie) with the idea of holding a raffle to raise some funds for a local charity, they jumped right in and suggested Big Brothers and Sisters.” For Sippola, who is a former Big Brother himself, the idea was a nobrainer. “This is an important organization that definitely makes a difference in the lives of young people,” he said. From now until Aug. 22, people are encouraged to donate $10 to the charity, and be entered to win one of three great prizes from local businesses: Dinner for six from Delizie Italane Bakery and Bistro, three hours of free cleaning from Dust Devils Maid Service, or fine art print of Tofino, courtesy of Sippola’s own photography work. WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future.

• Thursday September 18th • At the Pitt Meadows Golf Club • $150/person includes a buffet dinner and golf cart (per pair) • Sponsor a hole for $150. Includes signage of your name or business.

I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value.

Rotary ramping up for race

A percentage of the total cash raised from the annual Duck Race fundraiser this year will go to KidSport. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

Ten thousand rubber ducks are forecast to float down the Alouette River at the end of this month. That is – if all goes according to plan and each duck is sold. It’s all part of the annual Rotary Duck Race fundraiser, and rubber ducks are currently being sold throughout the community at a cost of $10 each, by a wide variety of sport and community groups. The goal is to help raise $100,000 to support youth groups in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. All ducks purchased will be entered in a race on Aug. 31. This year, 31 local sports and community groups are taking part in the fundraiser. This is an increase over last year’s total of 27. Since the fundraiser’s inception, a little more than $250,000 has been raised. “We have over $40,000 in hand this year already,” explained Meadow Ridge Rotary’s Bob Shantz – also known as Papa Duck. “We’ll have the total amount raised after the final call-in of all books sold on August 24,” he added. Tickets can be bought from any of the participating groups or race sponsors. (See full list at www.mrtimes. com) In past years, 100 per cent of proceeds from the duck sales went directly back into the group that sold them. This year the duck race has partnered with the B.C. chapter of KidSport: a national organization that provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that can prevent them from playing organized sport, and 25 per cent of each group’s total sales will go to KidSport. That amount is a 10/15 split between the groups raising money and the two local rotary clubs. Each club keeps 90 per cent of their total amount raised, and Rotary makes up the remaining 15 per cent, explained Shantz.

TIMES files

Ten thousand rubber ducks are set to make their way down the Alouette River during the fourth annual Rotary Duck Race on August 31. It’s a day that Rich Goulet (left) calls “a cool day to attend.”

“KidSport has become wellknown in our communities,” said Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows KidSport’s representative, Len Walters. “I hope this relationship continues... and KidSport has the opportunity to work with local Rotary clubs, promote the duck race, and provide the opportunity for all kids to play the sport of their choice.” When the first duck race occurred, the Rotary club contacted KidSport to tell them they

were receiving $25,000, Walters recalled. It was also the first year for the local KidSport chapter. “It (the funds) helped us get started,” Walters added. KidSport’s ability to collect and distribute funds throughout the community helps give assistance to kids facing financial barriers. In the past three years, 26 different sporting organizations have received more than $100,000 and 500 kids have had their registration into the sport of their choice paid for. Following last year’s duck race, 27 cheques were presented to various sport, youth, and community groups, with the highest dollar amount being raised by the Pitt Meadows Youth Basketball Association (PMYBA). Altogether, the group raised $11,500. “The money has been used for a wide variety of things,” explained PMYBA’s Rich Goulet. “New uni-

forms, new practice gear, basketballs, first aid equipment, awards, tournament fees and referees and in supporting players who cannot afford everything.” Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association (RMMSA) was another top duck distributor last year with the group’s ticket sales totalling $10,250. “Through the rotary club, the RMMSA has rebuilt our indoor batting cages at Albion Sports Complex, as well as complete an expansion of the RMMSA indoor winter training facility that opened in 2012,” said RMMSA president, Brian Fewtrell. Funds are also used towards improving the skill development programs RMMSA offers. “We are very pleased to hear some of the funding will now be used to help support KidSport.” Goulet said he also supports the KidSport partnership and called the event “a cool day to attend.”

Brandi Green has lived in Pitt Meadows for nine years, but this was the first time she’s come out to Osprey Day, and it probably won’t be her last. “It’s good, there’s a lot of people and it’s a lot of fun,” said Green, who brought her two daughters – Alyssa, 10, and Ashlee, three. They kept cool by running in and out of a hanging firehose spray. “It’s clearly hot out and with that fire truck hose, that’s probably the best thing here right now,” Green said. The third annual Osprey Day was held on Saturday, Aug. 9 and sponsored by the Pitt Meadows Community Association (PMCA). The day featured live music, vendor booths, balloon artists, children activities, the fire hose, an outdoor barbecue, and new this year – due to changes in provincial drinking laws – a beer garden that kids were allowed into. “It’s good,” said Kim Christopher Sun More Bennett about the beer Ashlee and Alyssa Green kept cool playing in the water being Photos garden. If there’s one way forward for General Motors out of the whole recall-related public relations debacle, it’s decent product. Forget trying to fix corporate culture, forget management restructuring, forget accountability audits and road-maps to synergy. Instead, simply build the cars that people want to buy, and build them well. To that end, while it’s fun to see the Camaro Z/28 scorch around the Nürburgring, or prepare to watch the upcoming Corvette Z06 kick the absolute bejesus out of supercars costing thrice as much, it’s far more important that Chevrolet’s passenger cars are solid and strong-selling. In the Canadian market, that means the small car segment. Since its introduction in 2008, the Cruze has done well, winning over Canadian families with big car space in a small-car package. For 2014, Chevrolet has introduced a unique drivetrain into their global car – a 2.0L diesel engine. We haven’t seen diesel in a GM passenger car in decades, and the last time we did it wasn’t exactly a good thing. So, does the Cruze Diesel have enough torque to get traction in the market?

Design:

Conservative nearly to a fault, the Cruze has a design that’s aged well, unlike some of its flashier stablemates. While the front fascia is dominated by a large, bowtiebranded grille, it’s not shouty at all. Diesel-equipped Cruzes come in a single trim, very well-equipped, which means you get standard 17” alloys and a bit of brightwork around the windows. In a darker colour, as with this week’s tester, the most striking thing is just how big the small car has got. The Cruze is now essentially the same dimensions as the old Impala. There’s a slight flavour of Impala to the rear taillights as well, but if you find some of the other small car options in the market a bit on the outlandish side, the Cruze should fit nicely in your driveway. It’s the equivalent of a nice dark grey pair of trousers that go with everything.

Environment:

SU

PP WH LI IL ES E LA ST

Inside, the Cruze is less trousers than it is cargo shorts. Despite being classified as a compact, there’s a surprising

amount of room inside, both in front and out back. Taller drivers will like the depth to which you can lower the seat, and even with it set to fit a larger driver up front, rear seat passengers still have plenty of room.

a semi-trailer, or up a particularly steep section, with torque rising to 280lb/ft.

I’m of two minds about the dash treatment, which incorporates a swathe of meshlook fabric to complement the black and silver motif. On one hand, it looks rather nice. On the other hand, I have some reservations about how well it’ll hold up to use, particularly when kids are involved. But other than that, the Cruze has a nicely laidout cabin that’s roomy, with decent sightlines. Being a higher-end model, everything in the diesel model that you expect to be covered in leather is, and the trunk is plenty huge. If you were looking for a machine with which to cross huge tracts of land, this’d appear to be the right sort of beast of burden.

Performance:

The single splash of colour on the rear of this week’s Cruze was a small green badge with a 2.0 symbol on it. That means that under the hood of this conservativelooking little sedan is its party-piece: a 2.0L turbodiesel engine cranking out 151 hp at 4000rpm and 264lb/ft of torque at 2000rpm.

Features:

Very well equipped from standard, the Cruze can be optioned with a host of features to make long distance travel that much more enjoyable. Chevy’s MyLink navigation system, based around a 7” touchscreen, is easy to use, and connects easily to your smartphone. A nine-speaker, 250-Watt Pioneer audio system is optional, as is a power moonroof, and backup sensors – but the rearview camera is standard. The enhanced safety package contains a suite of driver’s aids that can be found across almost the entirety of the Chevy range, including blind spot alert and cross-traffic alert.

That’s considerably more pep and grunt than you get with the next-most powerful engine on offer, a 1.4L gasoline-fuelled turbo four-cylinder. This is mated to a six-speed automatic, the only transmission on offer.

Official fuel economy ratings under the old system are 8.7L/100kms in the city and 5.1L/100kms on the highway, under the new 5-cycle testing. In the real world, the Cruze can best these figures.

If you’re expecting a barn-burner, this isn’t that sort of car. While the Cruze Diesel puts out figures that pip everything else on offer, the transmission and the throttle response are most definitely programmed for clean-running economy.

Green Light:

However, mine the torque a bit, and the sprightly chassis responds well. This is an ideal Trans-Canada warrior, built to haul up the mountain passes and then cruise on through the flat sections – er, no pun intended. There’s even a brief overboost function if you need to get around

Where the Cruze offers its best performance is in fuel economy. Not unlike VW’s TDI range of engines, the only competitor in this entry segment, the diesel Cruze is one of the few vehicles that hits its official fuel economy ratings in real-world driving, even under the highly optimistic 2014 2-cycle testing. Observed highway mileage dipped below the 5L/100kms mark, where the Cruze really excels. Shorter commutes don’t work as well with diesels, but for long distance travel, this car excels.
