If he’d tried to climb out on his own, she feared, he could fall further. But she didn’t see a way for herself or anyone else to safely climb down to where Ozzi was stranded. However, a call to 9-1-1 brought Ridge Meadows RCMP officers, a team of Maple Ridge firefighters, and eventually a half dozen members of the Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue team came to Ozzi’s aid. The area is described as dangerous, especially for dogs and young kids who might manage to sneak under the fence and onto the rocks overlooking the falls, said Rick Laing, manager of the search and rescue team. Ozzi cuddled up on the couch with Mom after a dramatic Thanksgiving Day rescue. And Maple Ridge’s Robin Tampin was happy to hold her three-year-old black cocker spaniel close. Just after noon on Monday, the pair were out jogging in Cliff Park when, as usual, the sound of water beckoned Ozzi towards the creek and falls. Running through the Webster’s Corner park, on the south side of the picnic area, Ozzi ducked under the fence and was on the embankment overlooking Kanaka Creek and the waterfalls before Tampin realized he had wandered out of sight. She called him back, but when he didn’t return immediately, she knew something was amiss. Realizing they were near the falls, she ran to the fence, but couldn’t see him. “I was calling him, but I couldn’t find him,” Tampin explained to The TIMES just an hour after the dog was safely plucked from a ledge by a search and rescue member who rappelled down to save him. Given the cool and wet weather, there were not many people in the park when Ozzi disappeared. But those who were nearby, were quick to join Tampin in her search. Ozzi and Tampin jog together a few times a week, including regular visits to Cliff Park. Tampin said it might be a while before they return to the park, and she thinks it will take a little longer before Ozzi earns rights to be off-leash again. “I think his love of the water might draw him back, despite what happened to him. But it might be a while,” she said, pulling Ozzi up close and once again running a hand through his fur to reassure herself that he didn’t suffer any injuries. “He’s a bit of a suck, all the time,” Mom added, “but now, he’s a little bit suckier than normal. “That’s okay by me.”

Pedestrian killed on Lougheed
A man struck by a car in the 20400 block of Lougheed Highway Sunday has died. by Roxanne Hooper
rhooper@mrtimes.com
A 52-year-old man who was struck by a car on Lougheed Highway on Sunday has died. The accident occurred in west Maple Ridge at about 8 p.m.
An eastbound car struck a man pushing a shopping cart across the road. Walking north to south across the highway, the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Staff Sgt. Manly Burleigh. There was limited lighting in this area of the highway, and given the rain, visibility was limited, explained the police watch commander.
An air ambulance transported the victim to Royal Columbian Hospital. Burleigh said a short time later that the man had “sustained non-survivable injuries and [was] removed from life support and is not expected to recover.” The victim subsequently passed away in hospital on Sunday night. The driver of the car that struck him is cooperating with Mounties, police reported, and
there were several other witnesses to the crash. Ridge Meadows RCMP are continuing their investigation, and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstrction Services (ICARS) has been assisting in the case. While it is widely believed the deceased was a homeless man known to many locally, police have not confirmed identification, as they have been unable to locate his next of kin.

Hospital pay parking petition put on hold
Council told supporters of free hospital parking that it’s a provincial issue. by Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com
A petition signed by 1,200 seniors asking for free hospital parking is not being taken seriously by city council, said a Maple Ridge man who is running for a council seat.

Council hopeful Grover Telford and mayoral candidate Graham Mowatt presented the petition at Tuesday’s council meeting. While free parking is preferred, Mowatt told council, a reduction in rates and getting rid of parking meters would be acceptable. “We don’t think this is fair to the people in Maple Ridge, especially the elderly who rely on the facility and have to pay those outlandish fees,” Mowatt said. According Fraser Health Authority’s website, the Ridge
Meadows Hospital parking fee is $3.50 for the first hour and $3 for each additional hour. Day rate is $8.25, evening rate is $5.25 and a one month temporary permit is $35.25. The website also said a financial hardship permit is available on a case by case basis. A number of sitting councillors said the issue has already been looked into. “They [Fraser Health] said, quite frankly, that we can take it [pay parking] out but then we
would have to subsidize their lost revenue,” said Coun. Cheryl Ashlie. Coun. Bob Massey said the metres generate $500,000 a year. Mayor Ernie Daykin added Mission Memorial Hospital will soon be charging for parking and Delta Hospital’s free parking is subsidized by taxpayers. Coun. Carisa Bell suggested concerned people should advocate directly to local MLAs and to the opposition party.

Cranberries celebrated Attendance numbers may have been down this year, but everyone who came enjoyed the annual Cranberry Day at Meadows Maze. “Roughly 400 people came out,” said Meadows Maze’s Brad Hopcott. “Weather did play a factor, but that’s the game you play with an operation like this.” The cranberry day was big hit with kids, and activities such as gold panning with Yukon Dan were popular as well, Hopcott added.

Superintendent cashes out Former Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows superintendent Jan Unwin collected $257,122. by Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com
Former superintendent Jan Unwin was the top paid Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district employee in the past year, earning $257,122 – about $100,000 more than the next highest-earning administrator in the district. However, almost $80,000 of Unwin’s salary was paid as a retirement allowance, and a further $5,000 was a vacation pay out, explained secretary treasurer Flavia Coughlan. “For long term employees, we have a retirement allowance clause,” Coughlan said, explaining it is two per cent per year a person works for the board. “It’s a retention mechanism so employees stay.” Unwin was appointed superintendent of graduation and student transitions by the provincial government in January. The school district’s fiscal year ended on June 30th and the annual statement of financial information report was released last week, detailing the district’s finances and listing 421 employees who made
more than $75,000. That amount includes salary, vacation and overtime pay outs, taxable benefits and employer-paid portion of provincial medical insurance and group life insurance premiums. Second on the list is acting superintendent Laurie Meston who received $156,823, Coughlan came in third with $152,685, senior human resources officer Roxane Carwell received $139,087 and the fifth highest paid was acting assistant superintendent David Vandergugten, receiving $131,810. However, half of Carwell’s salary was an overtime pay out. “This particular individual had banked hours,” Coughlan said, explaining it was grandfathered as new legislation doesn’t allow carry over into following years. “She still works for us and she is the last person [to have this much banked hours owed].” Sixth highest paid was acting assistant superintendent Shannon Derinzy at $129,989.56, director of human resources Dana Sirsiris at $126,578, director of instruction Joanne Rowen at $126,441, former Alexander Robinson elementary principal Sheila Pace at $125,483 and Pitt Meadows Secondary principal Michael Keenan at $120,671. In total, 53 employees earned more than $100,000.

Our View
Gamers reflect larger society The vile spectre of the Montreal Massacre rose again this week as an unknown would-be terrorist threatened a mass murder of feminists in Utah. The threats were against Anita Sarkeesian, a Toronto-born cultural critic who was planning to speak at Utah State University. She had to withdraw after local police couldn’t guarantee her safety, due to local concealed-weapon carry laws. The pathetic goon who caused all this actually signed his letter with the name of Marc Lepine, the mass murderer who killed 14 women at a Montreal University in 1989. What did Sarkeesian do to so enrage some anonymous halfwit? She critiques video games. Sarkeesian has been the target of an endless flow of rape and death threats because of her articles and online videos pointing out that in many games, women exist only as damsels in distress, scantily-clad background decoration, or simply to be killed off and avenged by the male characters. The cretins behind these campaigns against Sarkeesian and others have recently rallied behind the label GamerGate, claiming that they are standing up for, of all things, integrity in game reviewing and journalism. In practice, typing #GamerGate into Twitter will summon a legion of misogynist trolls out of the ether. The GamerGate troops have managed to harass several women, including Sarkeesian, and game developers into leaving their homes. Addresses and names of family were publicized, along with graphic threats to kill them. If all this sounds incredibly juvenile – sad man-children afraid of icky girls – that’s because it is. But it’s also something that virtually every woman who writes online about games, comics, scifi, sports, or almost any other allegedly male sphere of culture has to deal with. This isn’t a problem with games, it’s a problem with society. Those of us who oppose this vile behaviour are in the majority, and we should stand up together to oppose the trolls and support their targets. – M.C.

Voters’ opportunity missed
Dear Editor, I applaud the City of Maple Ridge and The Chamber of Commerce for making efforts to engage the voters of our community, but why is the event being held in the middle of the day on Tuesday, reducing the number of working residents able to attend? The all-candidates forums are important to ensure informed voting decisions can be made. A trite remark became, “It is not enough to be bilingual, you must be mother-tongue French.” Since 1969, the implementation of official bilingualism has cost Canada about $80 billion, having to put French translation on all retail food containers, liquor bottles, mandatory implementation in all elementary and secondary schools, etc. The Chinese and East Indians in Canada far outnumber most nationalities. It would be more advantageous to teach those languages instead, especially for business. WE have suffered French bilingualism injustice far too long. V. McCartney, Maple Ridge

Two different
Dear Editor, This newspaper has two contributors to the “letters” page who stand out. One, Cherryl Katnich, writes with common sense and political savvy and never has to resort to namecalling and vitriol to make her point. On the other hand, Wayne Clark spouts – soulless, shills, carpetbaggers, doppelgangers – in reference to our democratically elected government in Ottawa. Wayne has inspired me to increase my financial support for the next federal election. J. Price, Maple Ridge Letters on this page have been edited for space. Hunt celebrates centennial A City-wide hunt kicked off this week in Pitt Meadows.
It’s a treasure hunt 100 years in the making. The Great Pitt Meadows Heritage Hunt kicked off this week, as part of the City’s ongoing centennial celebrations. The Hunt leads people through Pitt Meadows with clues and activities designed to honour the community’s history. “This is a project that the City and the museum have been working on together for about the last month-and-a-half,” said Erin Mark, Centennial coordinator for Pitt Meadows. “It’s really cool because we never get a chance to work with the museum typically.” Participants can find clue locations and complete on-site activities for a chance to win one of the weekly prizes, which are drawn on Mondays at 10 a.m. so answers must be submitted before then. There are six activities in total and those who complete them all to unlock the final answer have the chance to win a
VIP package to A Pitt Meadows Christmas on Dec 5. A new clue will be released each Tuesday from Oct. 14 to Nov. 25. Look for clues on the City’s website, the City’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, in this publication, and at City Hall. Go to the clue location, complete the on-site activity and write down the answer. The answer from the activity is needed to enter the weekly or grand prize draws. At the final clue, answers from all six of the activities will help determine the final answer. Clues don’t need to be completed on a weekly basis, however, clue number seven needs to be done only after all previous clues are completed. Activities will be posted until Dec. 2. “This was designed as a community engagement project that everyone could participate in,” added Mark. To be eligible for the grand prize draw submit all six activity answers plus the final before Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. Get all the details on the City’s website at www.pittmeadows.bc.ca

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!
M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,
I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

OT win, close loss encouraging for coach Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
It was one step forward, and a step back for the Ridge Meadows Flames over the Thanksgiving long weekend. Looking at the bigger picture, it wasn’t all bad, in the eyes of Flames head coach and general manager Jamie Fiset. The Flames snapped a three-game losing skid with a 6-5 double overtime win over the visiting Aldergrove Kodiaks Friday at Planet Ice. However, any momentum they may have gained from the win came to a halt when the Flames lost 4-2 to the Mission City Outlaws Saturday at the Mission Leisure Centre. “I look at the last time we played Aldergrove, it was a 4-0 loss [Sept. 17 at Aldergrove Arena], and against Mission, it was a 6-1 loss [Sept. 26 at Planet Ice],” Fiset said. “So obviously there was some improvement. I think this [past] weekend we really showed a lot of character.” The mixed results leave the Flames at the bottom of the Pacific Junior Hockey League Harold Brittain Conference standings, with a 46 record. “It’s not like we’re sounding the alarm bells,” Fiset said.
AT, E W OS T U YO T N EY. A N W O WE EM H T T U O B A OT N T S JU
Using an NHL analogy with the 2014 Stanley Cup champions, who ended up sixth in the Western Conference standings at the end of the 2013/14 campaign, Fiset added, “What place did the L.A. Kings finish last year [in the regular season standings]? Not many people know the answer. It’s what you do at the end of the season. That’s what our focus is on.” Flames 6, Aldergrove Kodiaks 5 (double OT) Grant Rostvig’s goal 2:16 into the three-onthree double overtime period gave the Flames a much-needed win. The Kodiaks moved ahead 5-3 on Eric Callegari’s power play goal at the 10:02 mark of the third period. Then, back came the Flames, who scored the final two goals of the frame to tie the score and send proceedings into overtime. Dale Howell narrowed the deficit to 5-4 with an unassisted goal at the 12:04 mark. Just 18 seconds after that, Danny Wilson scored to tie the game at 5-5. Aldergrove led 1-0 after the first period. In the second period, the Flames had a 3-1 edge in goals to take a 3-2 lead. The Kodiaks scored three unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes and change of the third period to take what looked to be a commanding
lead, but they couldn’t hold onto it. Wilson and Howell scored a pair of goals apiece for the Flames. Rostvig (who added two assists to go with his game winner) and Bradley Crompton rounded out the list of Ridge Meadows goal scorers. Mission City Outlaws 4, Flames 2 The Outlaws snapped a 2-2 tie by scoring the only two goals of the third period. Mission City’s Brody Dyck scored the winning goal, on an Outlaws power play, 4:04 into the final frame. The Outlaws’ Joshua Pollock added an empty mark marker with one second remaining in regulation time. Mission City jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals 25 seconds apart midway though the first period from Pollock (on the power play) and Kyle Westeringh. The Flames rallied to tie the game in the second frame with power play markers from Jordan Rendle (at 3:06) and Michael Bell (at 17:46). The Flames’ next home game is this Friday (Oct. 17), when they host the Port Moody Panthers at Planet Ice. Opening puck drop is 7:30 p.m. • More online at www.mrtimes.com

Zombie Walk
Walk raises dead, awareness An annual Business Association event goes down next Friday. by Eric Zimmer
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
If you’re in downtown Maple Ridge next Friday, Oct. 24, you might just bear witness to the city’s own version of the hit TV series, The Walking Dead. But don’t worry too much, it’s all for a good cause. The second annual Zombie Walk events get underway at 2:30 p.m. Pre-walk festivities will start at 2:30 p.m. with a theatrical makeup team from Emerald Pig, who will be on hand and help-
ing participants get their zombie on and prepare for the walk. Presented by the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association, the flash mob style walk starts at Valley Fair Mall at 4 p.m. Last year more than 350 Zombies lurched, crawled and slithered through the downtown core, all vying for one of three prizes. This year, the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association will award prizes for the Scariest Zombie, the Funniest Zombie, and the Best Zombie Walk. The event will wrap up at Dairy Queen at 22490 Lougheed Hwy., where all Zombies will be given a
free treat. Designed as a way to increase traffic into the downtown core, and bring awareness to a variety of local business offerings, the walk presents an opportunity for BIA members to showcase and promote their business. Groups are also encouraged to enter as zombie teams as well. The event is free, however, the walk is also aiming to take a bite out of hunger, as Zombie Walk participants are encouraged to bring nonperishable donations for the Friends in Need Food Bank. today’sdrive 20 Cadillac 14
A27
Your journey starts here.
CTS V-Sport
This new car is moving up to compete with the 5-series and the Mercedes-Benz E-class As you’d expect from a Cadillac, the front is dominated by an enormous grille, with a glassed-in emblem the size of Shaquille O’Neal’s palm. The rest of the car is actually quite reserved, from a single strong accent line running the length of the side profile to the twin integrated exhausts out back. Even the V-badge is a fairly subtle arrangement of chrome with a red slash.
BY BRENDAN McALEER

“Some folks built like this. Some folks built like that. But the way I’m built – don’t you ever call me fat. ‘Cause I’m built for comfort; I ain’t built for speed. But I got everything, all a good girl might need.” And that’s the old Cadillac, Willie Dixon slingin’ the twelve-bar blues, black paint, chrome, and a cushy suspension floatin’ you on down the road to N’Awlins and the big muddy. A car? More like a paddleboat steamer with a big ol’ grille, I reckon.
wonder why this car doesn’t have one, but the twin-turbo six sounds angelic and hauls like a demon. I’ll take it. Forget all the lead-sled slow-rolling of the past, this isn’t the car once desired by the characters of Tin Men, this is a lightweight creation of magnesium and aluminum that weighs a good 10% less than the equivalent BMW 5-series. It storms to 100km/h in four and a half seconds, pulls nearly a full g on the skidpad, and carves up a backroad with stiletto precision.
The wheels are 18” alloys (standard on the V-Series) and they wear sticky Pirelli rubber in a run-flat application. Pirellis tend to wear more quickly than other tires, and that’s probably a good thing here as run-flat tires often ruin the way cars ride.
It’s heady stuff, but an image that faded away in the new dawn of a world favouring agility and fuel-economy. No more land-yachts: luxury might still be big, but performance credentials are needed for true bragging rights. Mercedes-Benz had AMG. BMW had M. Cadillac had the Cimarron. Uh-oh.
The steering is electric power-assist, but whoever did the programming on it deserves a medal. It’s excellent, and gives the CTS life beneath your fingertips.
Environment:
The eight-speed transmission is slightly more of a mixed bag: the paddle-shifters aren’t quite as quick as they could be so better to choose one of the four selectable automatic modes and let the computer set the gear for you. Also, in “Touring” mode, the 8-speed sometimes doesn’t hold onto top gear long enough – with this much power, there’s no need to drop down a gear suddenly under gentle acceleration.
While longer than the outgoing car, the CTS is still smaller inside than other offerings in the class. The back seats aren’t exactly cramped, but the Cadillac falls behind both BMW and Mercedes in terms of total passenger volume, including trunk space.
Happily, as part of General Motors, Cadillac also had access to the brains behind some of the fastest machinery ever to come out of Detroit. They gave Cadillac the V-series, a badge which this latest new CTS mid-sized sedan wears proudly.
Beyond that, it’s very nicely laid-out, with carbon-fibre trim and very comfortable seats. Fit and finish is up to a competitive level, and it looks great in here. Or at least it does when clean.
As I flick the shifter into manual mode, and drop down a gear, Willie Dixon’s voice fades out on the satellite radio, and the track changes. It’s Jackie Brenston and a young Ike Turner, hammering out “Rocket 88” at an up tempo speed.
Quibbles aside, this is one of the best driving experiences you can get from a luxury sedan without shelling out huge money for an M5 or Mercedes AMG. It’s built for speed, and as far as the comfort side of things goes, the ride would be just about perfect if the tires weren’t run-flats.
Cadillac’s CUE system takes a bit of getting used to, as it’s less intuitive than some of the other infotainment options on the market, but between the steering-wheel-mounted redundant controls and voice commands, mastering it isn’t too bad. Some of the haptic functions remain frustrating – like the volume slider – but the rest is workable. If you have the car for a week, you’ll only just be getting used to it; after a month, I’d imagine it’d be second nature.
That song, homage to an Oldsmobile V8 that once scorched up the highways, was based on a song called “Cadillac Boogie.” You heard the man, big Caddy. Let’s boogie.
Design:
Features:
Navigation is standard on the CTS V-Sport, as are a host of driver aids including backup camera, rear-traffic assist, and blind-spot monitoring. You also get an enormous sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, and a colour heads-up display.
But do yourself a favour: keep a microfibre cloth and/ or detailing spray in the glove box as the glossy surface collects fingerprint smudges and fluff like crazy.
The new CTS sedan stretches out longer than the previous generation by a good four inches or so. With Cadillac’s new ATS sedan taking on the BMW 3-series, this new car is moving up to compete with the 5-series and the Mercedes-Benz E-class.
Fuel economy is officially rated at 13.5L/100kms in the city and 8.4L/100kms on the highway. The CTS hits the highway figure without breaking a sweat.
Performance:
Green Light:
Spec’ing the V-sport version of the CTS gets you the upgraded brakes and rim-sizes you might find in the German brands. It also gives you a twin-turbocharged 3.8L V6 cranking out 420hp – jiminy cricket!
On looks alone, it’s certainly got the chops to do so. Cadillac’s signature straight-edged styling has evolved somewhat from the original CTS’s very angular profile, and the addition of “waterfall-effect” LED lighting gives the car a unique look you can spot from a mile away. At night, it looks more Blade Runner than Goodfellas.
Powerful engine; great chassis dynamics; strong styling
Stop Sign:
Infotainment can frustrate; not as spacious as others
The V6 purrs along on the highway, usually netting around 8.5L/100kms, and then transforms the car into a backroad barn-burner. Chevy makes such good V8s you sort of
