Teens out in the cold

Funding cuts are forcing a local youth safe house to shut down effective New Year’s Eve. by Ronda Payne rhooper@mrtimes.com

Rick Moyer/TIMES

Rebuilding a life with dignity

Nicole Alvarez, a 43-year-old Maple Ridge woman, had some of the audience in tears as she told her story of addiction, homelessness, and ultimate recovery to a crowd of a few hundred people at the South Bonson Community Centre Wednesday morning. She was one of the people ask to speak at the Salvation Army’s third annual Dignity Breakfast. She’s currently living at The Caring Place and going through their Genesis program, which is helping her rebuild her life. See story, page A4.

Park comes alive with festive spirit

Maple Ridge Christmas Festival Society continues to keep parade and park fresh with new ideas. by Ronda Payne

editorial@mrtimes.com

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it doesn’t happen without a lot of work beforehand. This isn’t just the case in Santa’s workshop, it’s also true for the elves in Maple Ridge who put on Christmas

in the Park and the annual Santa Parade. On Saturday, the fun begins at 4 p.m. in Memorial Peace Park on 224th Street with the Maple Ridge Christmas Festival Society’s community event, followed by the parade starting at 6 p.m. Society president and local realtor Dianne Enns said the fact that everything is free is a huge draw for families. “We allow absolutely no selling. Even hotdogs are by donation, and the money goes right back to the festival,” Enns said.

For 10 years, when there has been nowhere else for local youth to go, Iron Horse Youth Safe House provided emergency shelter. Due to a shift in federal funding, however, that facility will close New Year’s Eve – leaving the community’s most vulnerable, quite literally in the cold. It’s because of the federal government’s new funding focus, known as Housing First, that the current homelessness partnership has shifted, leaving Iron Horse without funds as of Dec. 31, said Alouette Home Start Society (AHSS) executive director Stephanie Ediger. Intense and continuing advocacy efforts by AHSS, as well as local politicians, have failed to keep the facility open, and the impending closure is now just a few short weeks away, Ediger said. “Our greatest fear is The consequences of the closure are disturbing to that the loss of the consider, she insisted. As the youth safe house only safe house for youth will have huge and under 16 years old in this community, the closure potentially tragic leaves a big gap. impacts on the safety The concern, aside from a lack of emergency shelter of at-risk youth in this options for local youth, is community.” their removal from their Stephanie Ediger community to other sheleters, Ediger said, offering up a current example of a 13-year-old homeless girl. “Iron Horse is the only service that this youth will connect with at this time. If this connection is lost, this youth may have a hard time finding her way back to the support that she needs in her community. Once they leave the community it’s much more difficult for them to reconnect with support that is suitable for them. It’s crucial to keep youth in the community,” Ediger said. “The community is concerned and we as an organization are concerned,” she added. “Our greatest fear is that the loss of the youth safe house will have huge and potentially tragic impacts on the safety of at-risk youth in this community, and will be especially devastating for youth under 16 years old.” The five-bed shelter and community outreach programs are operated on a budget of approximately $350,000 a year and provide help and safety to at least 100 youth.

A Maple Ridge family worked together to create Santa’s North Pole Village in time for the holiday season.

West Coast Express Santa Train rolls through town this Saturday, stopping at all WCE stations along the way. The train departs Mission City at 10 a.m. and leaves Vancouver at 4 p.m. In exchange for a new, unwrapped toy for the Christmas hamper society, passengers can ride for free. It goes again Dec. 13. • More at www.mrtimes.com

anta Claus lives in a twocar garage in Maple Ridge. And he’s got lots of company, joined by his elves and of course his better half, Mrs. Claus, who all happily reside in Santa’s North Pole Village, the creation of an industrious 45year-old woodworking hobbyist and his family. For more than a year Joe Smithson, with the help of his wife Vicki, mom Lee, and dad Tom has been building on a unique miniature Christmas display. While the Smithson family’s yard has the normal array of pretty colourful lights, this isn’t what makes this display different from all others. Once inside the garage, visitors will find themselves transported to a world where the buildings and characters are in 1/12th miniature. Since early November 2013, Smithson has spent his weekends and much of his spare time creating the diorama. Smithson said he’s always been good working with wood, and builds guitars as a hobby. He was the architect behind a similar Halloween display, sparking an idea in his mom to build something with a Christmas theme. “Of course, it went from one building and all of the sudden, it just kept growing until we had all these buildings,” Smithson said. ost of the display was built with base wood that Smithson said is “easy to work with.” “Everything comes in boards,” said Smithson, adding that Santa Claus’s 10-room mansion – which Lee describes as the display’s “piece de resistance” – took quite a long time to build.

Trustees get sworn in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school trustees were sworn in on Wednesday, at a special ceremony at Thomas Haney Secondary. Chair and vice-chair positions will be appointed next week. • More at www.mrtimes.com

Tractor and van collide When a northbound driver attempted to pass a tractor on Neaves Road Tuesday morning, the van clipped the farm vehicle and caused an accident that blocked the rural Pitt Meadows roadway for a long stretch, said fire chief Don Jolley. The vehicles ended up entwined, causing firefighters to literally pop the door to free the driver. Jolley reported there were “fortunately” only minor injuries. • More at www.mrtimes.com

Troy Landreville TIMES

“We tried to come up with basically what we thought Santa Claus’s house would look like,” Smithson said. “I always pictured him being an avid reader, with a busy kitchen, and everything [in the house being] ‘Christmas-y’ and nice, and warm and inviting, and that’s sort of what we went to.” No detail was spared, including a small army of Santa’s little helpers, originally Smurf figurines that underwent a dramatic transformation through paint. Key points will be the elf house and toy factory. Visitors can see where the elves sleep, make toys, wrap presents, cook, and eat. From the top floor wrapping room, there is a working conveyor belt delivering presents directly to the waiting sleigh parked in the reindeer barn, home of the eight famous reindeer and many of their other animal friends. Santa’s village also has its own post office and poinsettia hot house. In addition to Santa and Mrs. Claus, 50 elves are placed throughout the display, each going about their daily routines or simply having fun. Not only did Smithson spend more than eight months designing and building this three floor

manor, he also handmade 99 per cent of the furniture items including tiny leather sofas and chairs, the cooking hearth, kitchen sink/ cupboards, Santa’s desk, bed, fireplaces, working chandeliers, and a grandfather clock and piano, just to mention a few. he public is invited to check out the display at 23643 112B Ave., starting this weekend (Dec. 6 and 7) and continuing Dec. 13, 20, and 21. On this days, the garage will be open for visitors from 1-6 p.m. The display can also be viewed on Tuesdays and Thursdays: Dec. 9, 11, 16, 18, and 23 from 4-7 p.m. each day, and on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, from 1 to 6 p.m. While the display is free to the public, there will be a donation box with the proceeds going to the Maple Ridge SPCA. Smithson chose the SPCA as his charity of choice since his and Vicki’s 19-yearold daughter Taylor is studying to be a veterinarian at the University of Alberta. “We already donate monthly to the [B.C.] Children’s Hospital so this time, we’ll help the SPCA,” Smithson said.

T

On top of building the display during the past year, Smithson also wrote a book, “Kringle,” which will be available for sale with partial proceeds going to the local SPCA. The Smithsons’ 21-year-old daughter Jordyn created the illustrations for the book. “It’s a cross between Here Comes Santa Claus and the Lord of the Rings,” Smithson explained. Lee said visitors are asked to take their time browsing the whole display and are invited to come by again and again. “You can go through this four times, and see things that you didn’t see before,” she said. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be attending in person, handing out candy canes to all the children, and anyone wanting a picture taken with this jolly couple are encouraged to bring their cameras. To find the house, turn onto Kanaka Way off of Lougheed Highway. Past the roundabout, turn onto Gilker Hill. Near the top of the hill, 112B Avenue is on the right. The Smithson home is about halfway down on the street on the left hand side (look for the giant inflatable snowman).

Pitt Meadows council

New mayor officially takes the reins at City hall

The City’s new mayor and council were sworn in on Tuesday evening at City hall. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

www.mrtimes.com

As he settles into his new position, John Becker said he is both “humbled” and “excited” to be given the opportunity to begin the “second 100 years of our history along with my council colleagues.” Becker’s comment was a nod to the City’s centennial year, and was just one of a number of points the City’s new mayor touched on, as he gave his inaugural address to a packed Pitt Meadows City hall on Tuesday night. Eric Zimmer/TIMES “I’d like to thank Mayor John Becker was sworn in during the inaugural meeting Tuesday evening, along you all for being with the rest of the new council. Bill (Dingwall) and Mike (Stark) because of their already impressive credentials working in and around City hall.” Becker spoke of the familiarity of working with returning councillors Janis Elkerton, Tracy Miyashita, Bruce Bell, and David Murray. “I can’t imagine a better team to move forward with for the next four years.” The City demands leadership from a council that looks beyond the next property tax bill, or next election, Becker noted. “We need to focus on sustainable practices,” he said. “Part of our mandate of this new council is to open our deliberations up to our citizens to help us find the difficult right balance for this City.” It’s important to distinguish between “wants, needs, and wishes” as well, Becker said. “We need to focus our limited resources on areas where we have jurisdiction, like protective and emergency services. If we don’t feel safe in our homes and streets, nothing else much matters.”

Our View

Remember, and stop it Today is a day to remember. There are 14 names that we especially should all try to remember today: Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klucznik Widajewicz, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, and Annie Turcotte. There is a fifteenth name too often associated with those names – but it is a name that does not deserve mention in that list. In fact, it really doesn’t deserve the honour of a place in our memories – although many people are by now already bringing it to mind. It always seems more difficult to bring to mind the names of victims than to remember the murderers who made them important to remember. That’s not only because there are usually so many more victims than murderers, but because we all seem to have a morbid fascination with people who can commit such heinous acts. Nevertheless, we will not name the individual who killed 14 women at l’Ecole Polytechnique on Dec. 6, 1989. They were the women to whom the 14 names above belonged – the young women who died in “the Montreal Massacre.” They did not deserve to die, and so they deserve to be remembered – just as all women and girls who die as a result of deliberate acts of genderbased violence must be remembered. In Canada, more than 60 women are killed by their spousal partners every year – more than one every six days. Today, the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre which destroyed so many lives and families, is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Remember those 14 young women, and all the others. Remembering and being aware are the first steps to put an end to the senseless violence. – B.G.

Painful Truth

Greed feeds powerful people

Dear Editor, The opinion column by Matthew Claxton [Greed fuels leadership class, Nov. 27 Painful Truth, The TIMES] was both interesting and alarming, though not surprising. People with a sense of entitlement can be not only grossly overpaid people, but also can belong to organizations that are not charitable but are reliant on volunteering. It is based on entitlement, greed for imagined sense of popularity and power, and on the idea that the people who think they have power are better than the rest of us. Special privileges for some are not always monetary, but are no less frustrating, demoralizing, and hurtful for others. It can also cause irreparable damage to an organization. J. Schappert, Pitt Meadows

We know that the government is misleading Canadians by saying it is about cyber-bullying. There are only a couple pages related to cyber-bullying out of the 65-page document. Don’t forget, this bill was already abandoned due to Canadians speaking out against it. Privacy is a fundamental right in any healthy democracy. Legalization safer

Dear Editor, We have all seen the latest veiled attempt by the Conservative government to use our tax dollars to make their political rivals look bad with their “reefer madness” advertisement which claims that marijuana is 300 to 400 times more powerful than it was 30 years ago – which is possibly true. Prohibition alcohol was high-proof and contained toxic metals and chemicals – and killed thousands of people, until the government finally legalized, taxed, and regulated alcohol once again. The fact that marijuana is 300-400 times stronger than it was 30 years ago is even more reason for it to be legalized and regulated for purity and strength, and just as important to keep it away from children. The fact is 71 per cent of Canadians want to either de-criminalize or legalize marijuana, such as is happening right now in America. In B.C., the figures are even more prominent. In fact, before the night is even through, he’s already preparing for next year. For Hayes, who founded the community Christmas event in 2008, the annual celebration is a labour of love. It’s about putting a smile on the faces of those who attend, particularly the kids, said Hayes. “When you see a child’s eyes light up, and they smile from ear to ear, that’s what it’s all about,” he said. Friday, Dec. 5 And tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 5) 6 to 8 p.m. Hayes, along with a number of volunteers will once again welcome the Spirit Square community to the free, annual event at Spirit Square. Hayes founded the event after noticing a gap in what he describes as community celebrations. “We have Pitt Meadows Day every June, and I felt that we needed something every six months, not just once a year,” he explained. The fact that the event could be tied to a Christmas celebration was a big plus, and with the Pitt Meadows Michael Hayes Community Foundation and the City both on board, the event was born. A Pitt Meadows Christmas founder The inaugural event was called Christmas in the City. “About 400 people came out, it was successful, but we were flying by the seat of our pants,” Hayes recalled. Now, seven years later, Hayes is expecting about 3,000 to 3,500 people will take in the festivities. It’s a special year for the celebration, as the event is also serving as the wind-up to the City’s centennial year. “Last year, A Pitt Meadows Christmas was the official launch of our centennial year celebration, and this year, it will be the finale for the centennial,” he said. “It’s a celebration of a truly successful centennial celebration for City.” In addition to attractions such as Santa and Mrs. Claus, refreshments, a tree-decorating contest, and entertainment, the evening also features some centennial nods. “There will be little bits of the centennial theme dispersed throughout the celebration,” said Hayes. “We’ve got period-dressed carollers wandering around, and the museum will have a centennial display as well.”

Village vibe

Osprey lights up A Christmas tradition continues on the banks of the Fraser River in Pitt Meadows this weekend, and everyone is invited to come check it out. TIMES files

Festive treats and an atmosphere of celebration are part of the mix during the Osprey Village annual tree lighting ceremony, which takes place this Sunday, Dec. 7.

by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

It is a Christmas tradition that began when Osprey Village was born, and it’s grown with the community ever since. And this Sunday, Dec. 7, the village in the South Bonson neighbourhood and the Pitt Meadows Community Foundation will once again be making spirits merry and bright, as the community hosts its seventh annual tree lighting event. “It’s a really fun event for everyone,” said Anahi English, of the village’s Stomping Grounds Coffee House. And while the lighting of the giant tree may be the focal point of the evening, English – who helps organize the event – noted there is much more for people to come and experience. Santa Claus will of course pay a visit to the Village, and there will be hot chocolate and treats, as well as activities, carollers, and entertainment. While the event is hosted primarily by the vendors of the village, English noted the event is open to all, and everyone is welcome to attend. The three-hour event takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. in the heart of the village. Attendance at the event grows each year, English said. The family-friendly evening is also a great way for neighbours to mix and mingle with one another. Sunday, Dec. 7 It also provides an opportunity for those out5 to 8 p.m. side the village to come Osprey Village in the South check out the community Bonson area of Pitt Meadows in all its festive glory. “It’s a great way for new people to discover the village,” English said. But more importantly, it’s great way to bring the community together and kick off the Christmas season. For those who are planning to drive to the evening event, carpooling is encouraged, as parking in the village is somewhat limited. The event caps off a weekend that is chock full of Christmas festivities that begin in Pitt Meadows, in Spirit Square on Friday night, then continue with a number of festive celebrations in Maple Ridge on Saturday, before Osprey Village gets its chance to shine on Sunday.

Portraits bring memories and joy to community Help-Portrait Ridge Meadows will offer free pictures to those unable to afford it, this Saturday at Golden Ears United Church. by Christopher Sun

csun@mrtimes.com

A family portrait is an unaffordable luxury for some, but on Saturday a group of volunteers will change that. Help-Portrait Ridge Meadows will be offering its fourth annual Help-Portrait at Golden Ears United Church, 22165 Dewdney Trunk Rd., from 1 to 8 p.m. The event allows those in need to get a portrait taken of themselves for free, with a frame included. A team of 50 people, made up of photographers, makeup artists, hairstylists and other volunteers, donate their time to this

annual event, now in its fourth year. “Many of our clients haven’t had a picture taken of themselves for years,” said organizer Andrea Walker. “Some of them feel they are not worthy of a portrait ... Some are families who can’t afford school photos because it’s too expensive.” Those who come in for a picture will see a makeup artist and hairstylist before getting their picture taken, all for free. Most of the volunteers have been participating since the event started, because the whole experience is emotionally gratifying, Walker explained. “It really is something special to do this,” Walker said. “Many of us will have shed some tears at the end.” Walker said the community has supported this event tremendously, and without donations and sponsors, this event would not be able to continue each year. “We can’t do it without them,” Walker added.

Another review from dealerrater. ca

We recently purchased a brand-new Fiat at Maple Ridge Fiat. We received exceptional service from Kim and Justin. The whole process of buying a new car was so much fun with Kim. She pulled thru on finding the exact model and color we wanted and had it for us the very next day. This dealership goes out of their way to provide service, but most of all they are honest and have integrity in which a lot of other dealerships lack. They made sure we were happy with our decision. We drove away happy Fiat customers with our new stunning Italian beauty!!! ( 2014 Abarth) Hali & Rob

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

today’sdrive 20 15 Volkswagen Golf

A27

Your journey starts here.

The wait is over will be the 1.8-litre gasoline engine in TSI models. This motor is rated at 170 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque.

BY DAVID CHAO

Volkswagen has finally unveiled it’s much anticipated seventh-generation Golf. The 2015 Golf has been redesigned from the ground up, and thanks to its earlier release in Europe, has already received many accolades including the “2013 World Car of the Year” award. The VW Golf is the world’s second best-selling model in history with about 30 million of them sold over 40 years. The original was made in 1974 and was designed as a front-wheel drive, front-engine replacement to VW’s air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive Beetle. Building on the Beetle’s core philosophy, the Golf Mk1 was simple, good looking, and had an affordable price – and was a hatchback. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and it continues to prove the concept still holds value, as each new generation sticks with the same recipe. James May, host of BBC’s ‘Top Gear,’ recently said, “Golf’s are like potatoes. You wouldn’t want to do without them, even though they’re not really that exciting.” That is until you consider the sporty GTI version.

Design

The all-new Golf is based on Volkswagen’s corporate “MQB Platform” and shares it with the Audi A3. Through engineering advances, this Golf is the safest, best handling and roomiest of all time. Despite all of the sheet metal being new, the 2015 Golf is still instantly recognizable. The two-box profile remains, but the hood is steeper and the narrow grille is flanked by sharper headlights. The new architecture makes the new Golf close to two inches longer, about the same width, and roughly an inch lower than the outgoing model. Wheelbase is increased 2.3 inches and allows for a more spacious cabin and better space utilization. Using high-strength steel, VW has increased the rigidity of the Golf without adding weight. This results in improved fuel efficiency and performance. The 2015 Golf is available in both three-door and fivedoor hatchback models; there are three trim lines to choose from as well.

Performance

Initially, the Golf will be available with three different four-cylinder engines. The base, and likely most common,

The optional engine is the TDI’s 2.0-litre turbodiesel. The Golf TDI produces 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Both powertrains are more efficient but still feel peppy and refined.

The Golf comes with a massive standard features list. All trim levels feature a 5.8-inch colour touchscreen, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, and Satellite radio.

The base transmission for TSI Golfs is a five-speed manual, which is good yet unexciting in some ways. The six-speed automatic provides smooth and linear power delivery. TDI models have the choice of either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic DSG with Tiptronic – this latter selection is truly world-class.

Cargo volume below the parcel shelf is measured at 17.4 cubic feet and 23.7 cubic feet up to the ceiling. Max capacity is 53.7 cubic feet and loading is made easier by the flat floor.

Both the TSI and TDI have the same suspension set up, and therefore driving characteristics are similar. The TDI’s additional torque makes it quicker off the line, but they offer a solid, comfortable ride with crisp handling. Those seeking more performance can opt for VW’s iconic GTI. The GTI’s 2.0-litre turbo produces 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and it comes standard with the six-speed manual while the six-speed auto DSG is available as an option. Trimmed either way, the GTI adequately harnesses the extra horsepower and gives the Golf GTI a sporty attitude that is surprisingly refined and smooth. The only disappointment about the new GTI is its light steering – it just doesn’t provide sufficient road feel and makes this model feel bit too “normal” in comparison to its predecessor. All Golf models benefit from VW’s Cross Differential System (XDS). Previously only available on the GTI, this system monitors the suspension load and will brake the inside wheel to relieve understeer.

Environment

The 2015 Golf’s interior boasts high-grade materials and a level of fit and finish that looks like they came from Audi’s (which isn’t surprising considering that VW and Audi share many suppliers which provide the interior trims). The cabin is very accommodating and offers ample passenger space. Thanks to its innovative “MQB Platform,” the new Golf offers more shoulder room in both rows. Rear seat legroom has also been increased. VW has raised the level of quality, and the result is the Golf

is incredibly comfortable to travel in. The suspension is nice and supple, allowing it to glide over bumps and the sound-proofing makes the cabin serenely quiet.

Pricing for the 2015 Golf starts at $18,995 and ranges up to $34,295 Standard equipment includes keyless entry, heated exterior mirrors, power windows with key closing feature, automatic post-collision braking, Intelligent Crash Response System, and speed-sensitive power steering. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include cruise control, heated front seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, rain-sensing wipers, a rearview camera, and a panoramic sunroof. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for the 1.8-litre TSI are 9.3 city and 6.4 highway. TDI models return 7.7 city and 5.2 highway. The GTI’s 2.0-litre is rated at 9.4 city and 6.9 highway.

Thumbs Up

The VW Golf offers a cabin with a luxurious level of refinement. The new electronic differential improves performance and safety. A great looking car all around.

Thumbs Down

While the VW Golf has been billed as the only car anyone will ever need, it’s not the most exciting car on the market, nor is it the cheapest or most efficient.

The Bottom Line

It is impressive that VW is able to build the 2015 Golf with this level of refinement yet still offer it at this price point.

With almost $2,000 in donations to its crowdfunding campaign, tremendous assistance from the Township of Langley, and a very generous donation of $1,000 of LED lights and extension cords from Langley Canadian Tire, the beloved holiday tradition returns next week. Join Mayor Jack Froese when he turns Williams Park alight on December 11 at 5pm. The magic will continue from 5 to 9pm every night until December 21. Thank you, Langley!!
