Teenagers residing at a Maple Ridge safe house may not be kicked to the street, at least not yet. The provincial government is receptive to providing some funding to keep Iron Horse Youth Safe House open for six months – but with caveats, said Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read, who has spoken with both local MLAs Doug Bing and Marc Dalton, as well as children and family minister Stephanie Cadieux, to find a solution. “The provincial government may be willing to provide, put forward some funding, if we are able to find matching funds,” Read explained. “But we’ll also need a long-term strategy.” Read will meet with local MP Randy Kamp Nicole Read next, hoping that the fedMaple Ridge mayor eral government will provide the matching funds. Alouette Home Start Society, which operates the Maple Ridge safe house, announced last week that Iron Horse will close on Dec. 31 because of a shift in federal funding. Iron Horse provides five beds and one emergency bed to homeless youths aged 13 to 18. “The service they (Iron Horse) provide is really important,” Read said, explaining the facility is well used. “They turn kids away regularly.” The shelter, which opened in 2005, also provides community outreach programs and operates on a budget of about $350,000 annually, providing help and safety to at least 100 youth each year.

Donations of new toys, non-perishable food, or a financial contribution for either the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society or Friends In Need Food Bank can be dropped off at The TIMES, #2-22345 North Ave., Mondays through Fridays, until Christmas. Online, all the time...

Giving spirit

Firefighters aid needy families

When visiting a grocery store in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows Saturday, don’t be surprised to see volunteers collecting for financially disadvantaged families. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Firefighters in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows hope folks will be in a giving mood when they go grocery shopping this Saturday, Dec. 13. Especially considering the cause. Funds and donations from the annual Firefighters for Families charity drive are split 50/50 between the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society and Friends In Need Food Bank. In Maple Ridge, firefighters will be volunteering at all six grocery stores in the community – including the two Save-On-Foods locations, Safeway, Cooper’s Foods, and Thrifty Foods – collecting funds, food, and new toys for a charity event that started in 2002. The bulk of the donations are of the monetary variety, explained Timo Juurakko, assistant fire chief in Maple Ridge. “It’s gone up and down each year, but I still find it amazing,” Juurakko said. The combined funds from all of Maple Ridge fire department’s charity events through the past 12 years amount to $410,881. “We’re creeping up on half a million dollars,” Juurakko said, adding, “Just the [Firefighters for Families] alone, we’re at $158,407.” Regarding the two charities benefiting from Saturday’s drive, Juurakko said, “I think it’s close to the hearts of the people here, that they support us so generously every year.”

Troy Landreville/TIMES

Maple Ridge firefighters are hoping people will be in a charitable mood on Saturday, Dec. 13, when they accept donations for the Firefighters for Families food, toy, and charity drive. For the last couple of years, between 30 and 50 firefighters along with youth academy members have volunteered for the drive. Juurakko noted that the food bank and Christmas hamper society each has a volunteer on site, as well, in case the firefighters have to leave for a major emergency. The firefighters will likely be adorned in their turnout gear, however that’s depending on the weather. “If it’s cold and rainy, they’re usually in their turnout [gear] just to stay warm and dry,” Juurakko said.

In Pitt Meadows, between 15 and 20 firefighters will volunteer their time, accepting cash, food, and new toy donations between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. They’ll be at the Real Canadian Superstore and government liquor store at Meadowtown Centre, and the MarketPlace IGA at 19150 Lougheed Hwy. “It’s one of the very key community fundraising events that the department’s members take part in,” said Pitt Meadows fire chief Don Jolley. “It’s certainly one of the major three, and our members look forward to it quite a bit.”

Another nod for Brown tower Homes deferred City to look at bike safety after highrise proposal passes third reading. by Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com

A proposed 18-storey highrise with 126 apartments and six townhouses on Brown Avenue near Edge Street was given another green light. Maple Ridge City council gave third reading to the proposal at Tuesday’s council meeting, passing it unanimously. The next step is for a fourth and final reading before construction can start. The project will have 15 affordable housing units, 15 accessible housing units, 146 parking spots and an illuminated feature on top of the tower. However, concerns over lack of street parking and bicycle safety was raised during a public hearing held two hours prior. The current plan is to have

A proposal to extend 207A Street to 123 Avenue and build 21 homes, has been deferred by City council. More than a dozen people spoke against the project during a public hearing held Tuesday evening, causing the 7 p.m. City council meeting to start an hour later. Nearby residents raised concerns regarding homes encroaching too close to a stream that has fish, loss of wildlife habitat, and road safety. There is a dip on 207A Street and the road is very narrow. City staff will report back to council on concerns raised by nearby residents. In the meantime, the application, which was expected to receive third reading on Tuesday, is on hold and council is unable to publicly comment on it.

To add to the good news in a bad news story, the fire official credits bystanders with acting fast to move the conscious but badly injured pilot to safety as an estimated 20 gallons of airplane fuel spilled out onto the ground. Realizing there was a good chance the fuel could ignite, some of the workers nearby dragged the pilot about 50-feet away – to safety – and began administering first aid, while others grabbed fire extinguishers and stood watch to prevent a fire from erupting. “They recognized there was a serious hazard and got the pilot to safety, then had fire extinguishers at the read in case the fuel leak flashed… They did a fantastic job,” Chatton said. Once the pilot was stabilized and sent by helicopter to hospital, fire crews then focused their attention on the crash site, laying a thick blanket of foam down to subdue the fumes from the fuel that was puddling on the tarmac. The cause of the crash will be investigated by the Transportation Safety Board.

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Mural painter excited to work with Pigs ’Twas the Night Before Christmas

A grocery store meeting turned into a holiday work of art for a local painter.

Scenic artist Thereas Eaton is excited to be the mural painter for this year’s Emerald Pig Theatrical Society’s holiday production of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. The show kicked off last night, and continues its run tonight at Open Door Church in Maple Ridge.

by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

While working at the Save-OnFoods on 203rd Street in Maple Ridge one day, Theresa Eaton met Kathleen Hatley. And while the initial meeting may have seemed like a chance encounter, the meeting set off a chain of events that culminated this holiday season with Eaton painting the mural for Hatley and the rest of Emerald Pig’s Christmas production, Twas the Night Before Christmas, which kicked off its run last night. Eaton, who hasn’t worked at Save-On for the past four years now, said that during her time with the grocery company, she started her own decorative painting business on the side, which she has continued with to this day. That business helped land her a spot with the Emerald Pig’s production team this year, thanks to Hatley. “I bumped into Kathleen quite some time ago, and she told me that if I needed any experience, with set or decorative painting to let her know, and i thought to myself, ‘you know what? why

not?’ Eaton explained. The timing of this decision as it turned out, happened to be perfect. “They were looking for someone to do the mural for this production,” she said. The show itself tells the story of writer Clement Moore, who works for the New York Evening

Post, and must come up with a holiday feature. It’s four days before Christmas, and president James Monroe is counting on reading the story to his family on Christmas Day. But Clement has writer’s block. Not only that, he must work at home amongst his five children,

who are anxiously awaiting St. Nick’s arrival. Clement’s frustration mounts – then the magic begins. The sounds of bells, moving toys, and visions of Sugar Plum Fairies all conspire to help Clement, as the events from the poem come to life. Interwoven with carollers, a

song to St. Nicholas, dancing fairies and much more, the musical production concludes with the complete original poem set to music. Eaton’s been thrilled by the opportunity to work with the local theatre company. “I am so glad I jumped in with them,” she said. “They’re so devoted, it’s incredible,” The show is a great way to escape the holiday rush of the shopping malls, and the frantic energy that often comes with the season, Eaton said. She encourages people to “take some time and really appreciate your family. This play is a really amazing way to spend some time together,” she noted. The show kicked off last night, and runs tonight through Dec. 13, and then again Dec. 17 to 20, at Open Door Church, 11391 Dartford St. Visit www. eventbrite.ca, or www.emeraldpig.ca for tickets, or call 604-785-1405.

Our View

Once there was integrity It’s interesting how things have changed in the past few decades. It used to be that anyone in a position of authority used to take responsibility not only for their actions, but even of their perceived actions. Consider the quaint (by today’s standards) advertisement we happened upon in the 1955 files of our sister paper, the Langley Advance. It’s an actual apology from the B.C. Electric Company (forerunner of today’s BC Hydro), to their customers throughout the community who were affected by a power outage. It should be noted here that the outage was not the result of any negligence or malfeasance on the part of the company. It was the result of a serious storm that had blasted the region, causing trees to fall and power lines to be broken – not unlike the winds that blew through our community and up the Fraser Valley this week. Surely, no one could have blamed the utility for the resultant interruption of electrical service. And yet, integrity prevailed. B.C. Electric took its responsibility for providing the area with electrical power seriously – seriously enough to apologize for something that had surely been beyond the company’s control. At least, if B.C. Electric was able to control the weather, that technology has since been lost – along with a share of the integrity that made even large corporations back then feel the need to reach out to its customers with humility and a desire to do better. – B.G.

Christmas chaos

Traditions grow so unexpectedly \

Boondocks Banter by Lynn Easton

Lynn Easton, a journalist and former editor of The TIMES, offers reflections of life in east Maple Ridge and beyond. Send thoughts to lynneaston@shaw.ca.

I

’m having a hard time concentrating as I write this. You might think that’s because, like you, I am starting to feel the Christmas rush and my mind is having trouble settling down to write. Too many unfinished knitting projects, half done letters, unfinished party plans. That’s all true, but my lack of concentration is my own fault. I have the radio on and I am listening to Stuart Mclean on CBC and one of his many Dave and Morley Christmas stories. If you haven’t heard these stories, do yourself a favour and find a way to hear them. On the radio, online, or better yet, get them from the library. Like many of the others, this story is funny, touching, and a little familiar – and sometimes – a little maudlin. And absolutely perfect for a cold winter afternoon with a skiff of snow still on the ground and a long list of things to do sitting by this computer. I didn’t grow up with many Christmas stories – maudlin or otherwise. In our house, as soon as the first decorations went up, we sang. In the car, in the house, wherever we were. And despite my lousy singing I recall shouting at the top of my lungs with the rest. That’s how it is with rituals. You don’t know where they start or why. You don’t know you should be quiet if you don’t sing like Streisand, Adele, or Idina Menzel.

You just sing. With my own kids, the Christmas tradition became reading stories. We were always heading somewhere to visit relatives that usually included never-ending rides in cars and on ferries. In those old “pre-tablet days,” we gathered up armloads of Christmas and wintertime picture books. Endless stories. Give me some gorgeous drawing, a happy wintertime scene and teary ending and I am sold for life. And we’ve come upon most of these stories by happy accident. And the wintertime stories that have stuck seem to remind us of our vulnerability and our possibilities. I recall laughing hysterically with my eldest in her car seat while we waited in our car for 10 minutes outside a Christmas party the first time we ever heard Stuart Maclean’s Dave Cooks the Turkey on CBC. Like I said – find it. And I remember throwing in a hand-me-down CD of Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales into the car stereo as a last resort during one long Christmas Day drive. I admit I had never really heard the whole thing. But it is mercifully long and kept everyone silent for what seemed like forever that cold morning. Twenty years later, we still throw it on each Christmas morning as we head off into the hustle and bustle. We know the funny bits by heart and grow quiet as Dylan does, toward the end. It’s just what we do. That’s how it is with Christmas. Traditions begin when we are busy trying to get through chaos and – if we are lucky – keep us company for a long time. If you’d like to start a Christmas reading tradition with your family, check out the local Christmas storytimes for adults and children at either the Maple Ridge or Pitt

today’sdrive 20 15 Nissan Leaf

A15

Your journey starts here.

Nissan’s electric car is unique in many ways. Other than that, some futurism extends into the cabin, where the instrument display shows a series of dots displaying power use or regeneration. Mid-range models and up get a range indicator as part of the satellite navigation that shows how far you can go on a charge, and the puck-shaped gear-lever is like something you’d expect to find on a Star Trek shuttle.

BY BRENDAN McALEER

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com • Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer

When it comes to electric motor vehicles, one company steals the headlines and the other quietly goes about making the sales figures. Tesla might shine in the spotlight, but in terms of putting keys in the hands of ordinary consumers, the Nissan Leaf is doing for electric mobility what the Prius once did for hybrid technology. It’s pretty amazing when you think about it. Here, sold at a regular dealership alongside ordinary internal combustion engines, is a perfectly ordinary car with four doors and a hatch that just happens to plug into the wall. It’s not wildly futuristic, nor impractical, nor really avant garde. It’s just a car.

That’s assuming you have it in the right mode, however. Put the Leaf in eco-mode, and the throttle response drops to a level that makes it feel like you’re driving through maple syrup. Range is improved, but the car feels very slow. Flick it back into regular mode while driving (just a push of the thumb on the steering-wheel-mounted button), and the Leaf surges forward with glee. It’s actually pretty fun to scoot around in regular mode at city speeds, with the Leaf’s point-and-shoot torque meaning you can zip forward to merge with ease.

Standard wheel size is a 16” steel wheel, with S models coming with 16” alloys, and SL models equipped with 17” alloys. All cars come with a rear spoiler, with the SL trim gaining a small solar panel embedded in it. Mudguards are standard.

Now, here are a few words about the range. The ‘15 Leaf is much quicker to charge than previous models, but with the batteries fully topped off, still only provides a total theoretical range of 135 kilometres. That’s about a quarter of your average compact commuter, and if you run low on electric power, recharging is a somewhat more involved affair than just popping over to the gasoline pump.

Environment:

Inside, the Leaf is again mostly ordinary, with a few unusual touches. Because it saps power to warm up the cabin, there are heated seats front and rear, and a standard heated steering wheel. This latter is just the best. I don’t know how we all manage to live through the winter without a heated steering wheel.

However, for most everyday driving tasks, the Leaf is more than up to the job. I drove it home, up the hill from downtown to the North Shore, didn’t bother plugging it in, then I drove to and from Richmond in rush hour. Even though the weather was cold enough to be running the power-sapping heater nearly full blast, there was

The seats are nicely comfortable, with plenty of rear leg room, and the trunk is well-sized. Because it was designed from the ground up to be an electric car, the Leaf doesn’t suffer from the cargo-loss you find it electrified versions of regular cars, such as the Ford Focus EV with its cramped rear hatch.

As mentioned, mid-range Leaf models come with satellite navigation, based on a 7” touchscreen display. A backup camera is standard, and the top-level cars come with Nissan’s clever Aroundview monitor which shows a view all around the car - hence the name, obviously. Keyless entry and pushbutton start are standard, as is the aforementioned heated steering wheel, which I may have allegedly tried to steal and install in my own personal car allegedly. There’s also a huge suite of Bluetooth-related technologies, including streaming audio and a hands-free text-message assistant. Possibly the most interesting smartphone-related feature is the Carwings app, which lets you monitor your Leaf’s charging, battery levels, and even kick on the airconditioning remotely. Fuel economy is officially rated at the equivalent of 1.9L/100kms, or about $3 to charge. You can also set the Leaf up to draw power during off-peak times, when electricity is cheaper, bringing costs down further.

Green Light:

Very quiet ride good; very responsive torque; smart available features; spacious cabin

Stop Sign:

Slow to heat up; power use saps range; no incentives in BC make it costly

The Checkered Flag:

It’s a completely usable electric car for every day. If the range fits your intended use, it just works.

Features:

Power comes from a 107hp, 187lb/ft electric motor that provides instant shove from rest through a single-speed transmission. While the Leaf is nominally no more powerful than a Micra, the immediate availability of the torque means that it feels much faster.

With no need for a conventional radiator or the other trappings of a gasoline-powered car, the surprise is how much the Leaf actually looks like its entry-level cousin, the Note. It’s got an amphibious-looking face, LED headlights and taillights, a few blue-means-efficient badges here and there, but to the average onlooker, it’s just a pleasant little hatchback.

1-866-910-8877

It’s an interesting way to get around, with hardly any drawbacks. Yes, long-distance road trips are a bit tricky, but that’s why you buy a Hellcat Challenger as a second car. Or maybe that’s just me.

Performance:

Design:

19625 LOUGHEED HWY., PITT MEADOWS

You don’t even really need a quick charger at home, as the lower mainland is dotted with chargers these days. Park out front at the Granville Island market, and you can charge up your car for free.

Forget Rolls-Royce: this is probably the quietest car I’ve ever driven. Heavily insulated against road noise, the Leaf is whisper quiet, especially at city speeds, with the loudest thing in the car being the fan.

Mind you, there are all sorts of details that make the Leaf an unusual choice of transportation. On the market for four years now, Nissan’s electric car is unique in many ways. The question is; does it work for you?

A struggle between good and evil is the centre of the musical pantomime, The Snow Queen, being presented at The ACT Maple Ridge this coming Friday and Saturday. The 19th-century fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson is about a boy who is kidnapped by the Snow Queen, and a girl who goes out to save him. The musical is presented by SPECC-tacular Productions, which produces shows in Maple Ridge every year. The local production has 40 local performers. “There is wonderful singing and wonderful action,” said producer Christine Olorenshaw. “It’s kind of like the movie, Frozen.” Snow Queen is the inspiration behind Disney’s 2013 computer-animated film, Frozen. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors and children and can be purchased online at www.theactmapleridge.org. The show is only playing for two days, once on opening night, Friday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m., and three times on Saturday at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The subject is purely fictional, a boy with a terrible home life who embarks on a difficult journey during his formative years. “It depicts the life of a person from childhood to teenager,” Jansen Van Rensburg said. “It tells three different stories of his life. There’s the one story where he’s not doing well in school and he goes out and gets into a bad life, and there’s the other side where he doesn’t have a good home, he was raised poorly and he didn’t have a lot of money, and then there’s the other story where there was someone there to help him throughout that time.” Jansen Van Rensburg liked the idea that each person has more than one story to tell. “I can’t look at someone and think, ‘I can just judge them’… because I have no idea what [he’s] been through,” Jansen Van Rensburg said. The poem came to Jansen Van Rensburg around 1 a.m. one morning, while he was doing homework. “I watch movies that sometimes start out with, ‘based on a true story’ and I thought, I can actually use that,” he said. Jansen Van Rensburg, who plans on studying business and computer science once he graduates, is hoping to write another poem for a poetry slam event at Thomas Haney. On that vein, Nicholas was impressed by Jansen Van Rensburg’s efforts at the school’s annual poetry slam. “I never heard him do a poetry slam before and he was absolutely

phenomenal,” Nicholas said. The main structure of Nicholas’ poem, We Are All Blatantly Ignorant, came to him while he was babysitting. “The boys were just kind of doing some stuff,” he said.

“They’re doing their thing, I’ll just watch them and I was really getting into the poem, itself, and then when I got home I just kind of touched it up.” Nicholas, who has an eye on either broadcasting or politics upon graduation, developed a community-minded perspective as a member of the District Student Advisory Council of Maple Ridge. The idea behind We Are All Blatantly Ignorant is to inspire more people to help and do good for the community.

Maple Ridge residents Greg and Beth Polovick recently took an 18-day Viking Cultural Delights tour to China, and among the highlights of their trip was a cruise down the Li River (above) where they took in the beautiful scenery, green hills, and clear waters of Guilin. Also on the trip, they visited Xian and saw the terracotta warriors depicting the armies of the first China Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Christmas hamper society

Seven-year-old boy leads successful PJ challenge Need for new toys and gifts still great

Young Justin Frandsen collected 48 pairs of pajamas for needy kids.

The Christmas hamper society provides financially disadvantaged families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows with a memorable Christmas Day thanks to the donations of individuals, groups, and businesses in this community each year. Last year, 574 local families were helped. So far this year, there are already 470 families signed up and more expected to register this weekend.

by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

“I want to make kids happy on Christmas, so they can sleep comfy and cozy in their beds and wait for Santa.” And, in his effort to make his wish a reality, seven-year-old Justin Frandsen recently delivered 48 pairs of new pajamas to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society. One of the Christmas traditions for this Grade 2 Golden Ears Elementary student has always been to open a gift on Christmas Eve. His parents Rick and Brandee always give him a box that includes a new Christmas ornament, a holiday movie, and a pair of new PJs. Last year, he received his favourite pajamas yet. It was a pair of Canuck PJs, said the huge fan of rightwinger Radim Vrbata. Wanting to share that moment of wonderment and delight with other girls and boys, Justin approached his mom last month with an idea of

Typically quite a shy boy, seven-year-old Justin Frandsen didn’t mind a little notoriety when he dropped off 48 pairs of pajamas to the Christmas Hamper Society, hoping they be going to children less fortunate on Christmas Eve. “raising” pajamas. Translation, explained his mom, Justin wanted to donate 25 pairs of PJs to underprivileged kids. Every Christmas since Justin was born, he and his parents have had a Christmas Date Day. They go out shopping, and purchase one gift for a little

boy and another gift for a little girl. Then, after lunch or an ice cream break, the family delivers those gifts to the hamper society. This year was no exception. Justin bought and delivered several gifts, including a Hot Wheels car maker, two rainbow loom bracelet makers, and

a you-dig dinosaur science kit that will be given to needy kids. But he also dropped off a box full of pajamas that fit from 2T up to adults. Knowing the purchase of an additional 25 pairs of pajamas for the hamper society was too cost prohibitive for their family,

• Each registered family receives a sack full of new toys for each child (newborn to 18 years old) valued at about $100, as well as a traditional Christmas dinner. • In addition to the Christmas Day spoils, the family is also treated to two days of free shopping at the Rudolph’s Recycle Shoppe (with gently used items ranging from clothing and household items, to toys and other gifts). Those days were set aside last Saturday, Dec. 6, as well as this coming Saturday, Dec. 13. • As well, the children are invited to participate in the Kids Only Gift Shoppe, which allows them to a free shopping spree to choose a gift for their parent or caregiver. That shopping day is being held this Sunday, Dec. 14 at the hamper offices at the Albion Fairgrounds. • Last day of registration is Sunday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albion Fairgrounds. www.mrpmchristmashamper.org

Mom suggested a PJ challenge, and Justin out did himself. He received donations from his mom’s coworkers, some classmates at school, family friends, his grandparents, his aunts and uncles, and other relatives. Almost doubling his goal, Justin said he’ll do it again

next Christmas. Next time, he wants to collect 100 pairs of PJs. And with that goal in mind, Mom insists the challenge will have to start much sooner, maybe around his birthday in August.

Tastes of the holiday

Seeking recipes with history TIMES readers are asked to share their favourite Christmas recipes and some of the history behind them. by Roxanne Hooper

rhooper@mrtimes.com

When hunting out history of significance in any community, food is often at the heart – but seldom at the forefront. Well, The TIMES wants to move it to the forefront, and with readers’ help they hope to compile a collection of local recipes that speak to this rich and tasty community’s heritage. Partnering with the heritage societies in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, The TIMES wishes to put together a new compilation of heritage recipes – each of which will hold some significance to this community or the people from its past.

Back in the mid-1990s, the Maple Ridge Historical Society put together a book called Heritage Recipes of Maple Ridge. The goal, during the next year, is to compile these and other old recipes – along with stories and accompanying photographs of local significance. While many of the recipes are expected to be traditional Christmas dishes, they don’t have to be. The only requirements: They must be passed down at least one generation, and again they must bear some significance to local history or people in the communities of Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, or the Katzie or Kwantlen First Nations. Please email the recipes, stories, and pictures to rhooper@mrtimes.com.

Those climbing aboard the West Coast Express Santa Train on Saturday at the Port Haney, Maple Meadows, and Pitt Meadows stations contributed more than 300 new toys and $130 in cash to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society. Hamper volunteers were on hand to greet riders, collect donations, and hand out candy canes. The Santa Train runs again this Saturday, taking shoppers into Vancouver for free, in exchange for a donation of a new, unwrapped toy or cash to the hamper. The train leaves Mission at 10 a.m. and departs Vancouver at 4 p.m.

Garet Klassen said his Camaro is “fun to drive.” Klassen is second vice-president of the B.C. Chevelle and GM Car Club. The club began in 1985, and today, has about 50 car enthusiasts as members. Club events throughout the year – such as the Show n’ Shine that was held in Pitt Meadows this past summer – help the club raise money for local charities, especially around Christmas time. .

There’s a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle convertible, charcoal grey, with only 200 miles on the odometer, in a showroom at Gateway Classic Cars in St. Louis. It’s yours for $180,000 US. Most vintage Chevelles, a muscle car introduced by GM in 1964, don’t go for that much, but a well-kept one can still fetch up to $40,000. Which is why enthusiasts flock to car shows such as the ones put on by the B.C. Chevelle and GM Car Club. The club takes the money raised from the admission it charges at its annual Show n’ Shines and gives it to charities. The Show n’ Shine, held this past summer in Pitt Meadows, is

Muscle-car fans checked out the local stock at the B.C. Chevelle GM Car Club show in Pitt Meadows this past summer. The event helps raise money for Christmas charities. the club’s biggest fundraiser, but they also raise money through 50/50, bowling nights, raffles and a silent auction. There are about 50 members of the Chevelle and GM club, who exhibited vehicles at Pitt Meadows Day this year. The Chevelle club started in 1985, with membership then limited to the Chevrolet El Camino,

the Pontiac 95 Years of Giving Beaumont (sold only in Canada) and the Chevy Chevelle. But last year eligibility was expanded to accommodate other GM vehicles because Trans-Am, Camaro, Chevy pickup and other such clubs were folding. This left owners of those vehicles with no place to go. So they’re now welcome in the

Chevelle club, as long as their car is vintage 1974 or older. With the rule change, Klassen, retired after a career as a policeman and tax-fraud investigator, sold his Chevelle and bought the same car he drove when he was 18, a blue 1968 Camaro RS/SS: Hidden headlights, revised tail lights, hood scoops (non-functioning) and white stripes. Even adjusted for inflation, gasoline cost less than 60 cents a litre in 1968, according to StatsCan, so now it costs Klassen twice as much to get from A to B than it did back then, the only minor drawback to Sunday drives. The charity aspect is always appealing though. “Raising the money for charity, it’s a good feeling,” said Garet Klassen, second vice-president of the B.C. Chevelle and GM Car Club. Klassen challenges other clubs to also donate to charity. The club itself is “fun,” Klassen said, and added it was like a little part-time job. “And it’s fun driving the Camaro.”
