for the 16-year-old Maple Ridge resident, one of 72 children from Vancouver and its surrounding areas who flew to Disneyland on Dec. 10 to participate in The Sunshine Foundation’s 59th DreamLift. This one-day adventure for children and teens with severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses took flight with support from two local golf tournaments – the B.C. Lower Mainland Sunshine Dreams for Kids Tournament in Pitt Meadows, and Golf Fore Kids. In Torie’s case, her challenges include global delays as well as being anaemic, so she gets easily fatigued. “She’ll never get better, she’ll never outgrow it, she’ll always have it,” Torie’s mom Susan Kammerle said. never travelled without their parents – explored Disneyland with volunteers from BC Lower Mainland Sunshine Dreams for Kids Tournament, Golf Fore Kids, and local health care providers and volunteers. The group arrived at Vancouver International Airport at four in the morning, for a 7 a.m. flight. They visited Disneyland from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. before heading back to the airport and boarding a flight home. Their plane touched down again at YVR around midnight and Torie was home in Maple Ridge at roughly 1:30 on Thursday morning. Chaperoning Torie was volunteer Lauralee Germain, who served as chairperson for the Golf Fore Kids 19th Annual Tournament held Sept. 26 in Langley.

The ownership landscape for community newspapers in the Lower Mainland, including Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, has changed dramatically in the past 24 hours. The TIMES, founded in 1985, is one of seven community newspapers involved in the ownership changes that have been agreed to. In a Wednesday morning announcement, Alvin Brouwer – president of Lower Mainland Publishing (Ltd.) – said an agreement has been reached for The TIMES, Langley Advance, Surrey Now, and related publications and digital properties to be sold to Black Press. Black Press owns the Maple Ridge News, and will assume operational control of The TIMES March 2, 2015. Glacier Media (owner of LMP) has in turn agreed to purchase the TriCity News, Burnaby News Leader, Richmond Review, New Westminster News Leader, and related publications and digital properties from Black Press. In an address to TIMES staff Wednesday, Brouwer said, in his opinion, it is better to have Brian McCristall two newspapers in TIMES publisher a community, rather than one. He added, “Our business is all about people, and you care, and care deeply about this community. Therefore, it should be business as usual, and that means working as hard as you can putting out great newspapers.” TIMES publisher Brian McCristall concurred with Brouwer and emphasized that readers, advertisers, and the communities have certainly benefited by having two newspapers during the past 30 years. In a separate transaction, Black Press has purchased the Vancouver Island Community Newspaper Group. The Victoria Times Colonist is not part of that transaction.

Jason MacPherson has seen first-hand the grisly aftermath that results when people drink too much and then decide to get behind the wheel of a car. In fact, the Maple Ridge tow truck driver has a personal connection to the consequences. “I had a buddy who I went to high school with and he was the passenger in the car driven by a drunk driver,” MacPherson related. “The car flipped and my friend died.” For MacPherson, the accident – which took place “about six years ago” – was a “wake-up call,” and was the inspiration he needed to get involved with Operation Red Nose (ORN) Ridge Meadows. “I thought maybe I should volunteer and help out so that everyone can get home safe,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to lose another friend or family member, or see that happen to anybody.” MacPherson has been volunteering with ORN now for the Eric Zimmer/TIMES past four years. Mounties ask driver to be safe
CounterAttack road checks are being conducted during the holiday season, and Mounties are reminding people to not drink and drive. Christmas is about giving, but there is one “gift” drivers can do without this holiday season – namely a ticket. CounterAttack road checks are being conducted throughout December and local Mounties are reminding drivers to be safe and not to drink and drive. ment fees, and may have their vehicle impounded – which can cause hardship if the car is shared amongst family members. Police are also reminding new drivers that they cannot have any alcohol in their system while operating a motor vehicle and if caught, will face fines, immediate driving prohibition, and possibly a later prohibition by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles for violating the conditions of their licence. Mounties encourage people consuming alcoholic beverages to be safe by having a designated driver, taking transit, calling a cab, or using Operation Red Nose to get home safely. On average, 86 people die every year in crashes involving impaired driving.

Ridge Meadows RCMP is looking for the following people. If you see any of them, do not attempt to apprehend them. Please contact the RCMP immediately by calling 604-463-6251 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The warrants attached to these individuals were still outstanding as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. Remember: all of the listed people are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
A transit presentation was brought before City council on Tuesday night, offering some detail on what the City could potentially see in the future. by Eric Zimmer
Two new B-line buses could be on the cards for the community, should the impending transit referendum question get the go-ahead by voters. One will connect the future SkyTrain station at Coquitlam Centre with Pitt Meadows and downtown Maple Ridge, while the other will also connect to the station, and then to Langley via the Golden Ears Bridge. The information was revealed to Pitt Meadows City council on Tuesday night during a council meeting, by Greg Moore, mayor of Port Coquitlam, and chairman of the mayor’s council investment subcommittee. The service would come at a cost of a 0.5 per cent increase in the PST for Metro Vancouver residents, with the extra monies slated to help fund much-need transportation infrastructure throughout the entire region. “None of us want to be a part of increasing taxes, but there is a cost to doing nothing,” Moore stressed. “We know that more people are coming to the region.”

An increase in bus frequency, as well as studying the possibility for a potential Bus Rapid Transit, (BRT) line was also put forth by Moore. “A BRT is a bus that basically has its own dedicated lane, and light prioritization, an easy load platform,” he explained. “It works similar to light rail, but with tires.” There is “no plan B” if the referendum fails, Moore noted. “We’ll go back to the Province, for their leadership, which I’m not sure would be the best strategy.” The cost of the referendum will be “around $5 million,” but it’s all borne by the provincial government, Moore said. “It’s their responsibilty. It will be a mail-in ballot. We’ve requested that it occurs around mid-March.

Our View
Site C project best of bad There will be much rending of garments and gnashing of teeth, but the decision to go ahead with the Site C hydroelectric dam project is probably, in balance, the right one. In a perfect world, the idea of flooding more than 5,000 acres of arable land to generate electricity would be incomprehensible. Many would suggest that any environmental assessors who could have given their stamp of approval to such a project should be made to work in a windowless office in a block of concrete for the rest of their lives. The provincial leaders who followed the environmental approvals by giving the project the go-ahead will certainly pay a political price from some quarters. We empathize with the First Nations who will see sacred lands drowned beneath cubic miles of water… if their court challenges are unsuccessful, and that certainly remains to be seen. Likewise, we feel for farmers who will see their livelihood shift as their farms – currently significant agricultural attributes in a province which is comprised of only four per cent arable land – are flooded and rendered useless. Going ahead with Site C is not a great decision, and maybe not even a good decision. But it is the best decision, not just from the viewpoint of the obvious economic benefits, but whether we wish to admit it or not, from an environmental position – which is surely what the assessors and politicians had in mind. We live in a society that gobbles energy, and unless we decide to reduce our consumption, our environmentally sound options are limited. Wind, wave, and sunlight, despite great recent advances, remain too expensive. Too many people are too afraid of nuclear power. We’re not convinced LNG is more than a pipe dream. And coal and oil are too dirty and too dangerous. Hydroelectricity isn’t perfect, but for now, it’s the best we’ve got. – B.G.

bined, is vastly under-explored. To encourage investment and exploration, the provincial government implemented a two-zone system to provide certainty for explorers and promote investment while also protecting parks, ecological reserves, sensitive environmental areas, and other potential wilderness tourism areas. However, a strong sense of NIMBYism and relentless badgering in the media by special interest groups is stifling exploration of potentially rich mineral deposits that could result in foreign investment, development, and thousands of B.C. jobs. The concerns expressed by these special interests are grossly exaggerated. The land area actually impacted by mineral exploration in B.C. is less than 0.01 per cent of our total land base. The actual likelihood that exploration activity will result in a mine, after multiple environmental reviews and the economics of production are taken into consideration, is minuscule. Yet the benefits are great and could provide livelihoods for entire communities and many associated small businesses. This is good for all taxpayers and even for the many non-profit groups all over B.C. that benefit from the voluntary financial support exploration companies provide. Christmas can be lonely for those unable to spend it with friends and family, but a free community event helps ease that loneliness for at least one evening. Christmas Haven’s 17th annual dinner is being held at The ACT on Christmas Eve, a non-denominational event bringing the community together. Last year, 300 people, made up of individuals, families and seniors, attended. “There is a warm turkey dinner, Christmas carolling, children activities, and a special somebody will arrive of course,” said organizer Corisa Bell, referring to the jolly, bearded man in red. “It’s a really special evening.” Christmas Haven is open to everybody, not just those who can’t afford to have a nice holiday feast, Bell added, explaining she started volunteering for the event
after participating as part of the entertainment years ago. The Salvation Army is catering the event, and a team of about 70 volunteers help make the event run smoothly. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and no reservation is required. The last seating takes place at 7:30 p.m. There will also be free taxi service for those needing a ride, which needs to be arranged in advance by calling 604-465-8085. The annual event costs about $6,500 to stage and Bell said they are still fundraising. Donations are being accepted at Tempations Salon in Haney Place Mall, and at the leisure centre. Donations of warm toques and mitts are also being accepted for children and adults in need.

Then and Now Thursdays In what we hope will become a regular TIMES feature, we take a look at what the community once looked like, and what it is today. For instance, this photograph (above) was taken on 224th Street some time in the 1970s. An exact year was unknown, said Maple Ridge Museum curator Allison White. But when she posted the image to the museum Facebook page recently, “It was still nice to see it go viral.” In the meantime, The TIMES also offers a picture of the same City strip during this holiday season with the empty space that was most recently the Haney Bingo-Plex. The CIBC and the Christmas bells a constant through all the years that appears in both pictures.

Christmas cheer
Mounties sing An RCMP holiday tradition that goes back more than 20 years still continues strong in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Several years ago, as she prepared to sing Silent Night at Creekside Manor at Ridge Meadows Hospital, RCMP Const. Krista Doncaster witnessed an elderly lady be wheeled out of her room in her hospital bed and into the room where she and fellow Mounties were performing. As Doncaster and a group of fellow officers sang the historical Christmas hymn, adorned in their red serge, the woman became overcome with emotion and began to openly cry. It’s a moment that Doncaster can still clearly remember and it’s moments like this that give extra meaning to an endeavour she and a number of other local police officers embark on each holiday season. Every year since 1993, Doncaster and former Ridge Meadows RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh have been joined by other current and past members of the detachment, as they make their way to a number of seniors facilities around the community to sing Christmas carols for the residents during afternoon performances. “Dave started doing this when he worked in Kelowna, and then he was transferred down here in ’93,” Doncaster explained. “That was the same year that I started, and we decided to continue the tradition.” The group had pretty humble beginnings. “When we first started doing it, we had no guitars, bells, or accompaniment,” said Doncaster. “We just stood up in our red serge and sang. And we were horrible.” Today, guitars and bells both Const. Krista Doncaster accompany the singers, and Ridge Meadows RCMP Walsh himself is one of the guitar players. Though she stresses that the group today is hardly a professional music group – by any stretch of the imagination – Doncaster noted that, “we’ve come a long way,” since the tradition began and “we look pretty spiffy in red.” Even after more than 20 years of singing Christmas carols to seniors in the community, Doncaster said “seeing the seniors and how much they appreciate us coming,” is what keeps the effort fresh and fun year after year. “Christmas can be a very lonely time of year for many, so this is about just giving a little something back, and it’s just one of those things that make you feel really good,” she related. “The Christmas season doesn’t really start for me until we start carolling.” After a series of visits to various homes and facilities, the group, which fluctuates in make up due to call-outs and other responsibilities is preparing for its final performance of the season on Friday, Dec 19 at 2 p.m. at Greystone Manor in Maple Ridge.

Another review from dealerrater. ca
We recently purchased a brand-new Fiat at Maple Ridge Fiat. We received exceptional service from Kim and Justin. The whole process of buying a new car was so much fun with Kim. She pulled thru on finding the exact model and color we wanted and had it for us the very next day. This dealership goes out of their way to provide service, but most of all they are honest and have integrity in which a lot of other dealerships lack. They made sure we were happy with our decision. We drove away happy Fiat customers with our new stunning Italian beauty!!! ( 2014 Abarth) Hali & Rob

Disneyland treats girl as VIP …continued from page A1
For more than a decadeand-a-half previous to this year, the fundraising tourney had been hosted by Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows. The 2014 tournament generated $120,000; half of those funds went to the Sunshine Foundation’s DreamLift trip. During the trip each child was accompanied by both a chaperone and Orange County sheriffs. About 200 Orange County officers volunteered to help out during the day. Torie’s opportunity to take part in the trip came about with help from an occupational therapist with Ridge Meadows Child Development Centre, who approached Susan with the idea. “She said that Torie is a good candidate, and would you be interested in putting an application in,” Susan related. Initially, Susan was excited with the prospect of possibly joining her daughter in California. “First of all I thought, ‘Oh, I get to go!’ And I thought it was for a couple of days,” Susan said. “But I found out it was for one day, and I had to stay home.” In Disneyland, Torie

Asked what the highlight of her trip was, Torie answered, “Everything.” This was an opportunity that Torie and her family couldn’t pass up. “I don’t think she would ever have had the opportunity to go,” Susan said. “I really thank them so much – from the bottom of my heart. The reality is, she wouldn’t have gone otherwise.” Germain described the trip as “amazing.”
“The kids are so thankful, and they’re so excited, and a lot of them have never been away from their parents, have never been on a plane, never been to Disneyland... there are a lot of firsts for many of the kids. And at the same time they are going with people they don’t know, so that’s really encouraging, how brave they are,” she said. The B.C. group got a VIP treatment in Disneyland. “We got to go to the front of the line, we had these special passes,” Germain said.

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!
M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,
I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Maintaining social media sanity is possible for the holidays

adi Jordan is a local social media specialist whose niche market is the spa, health, and beauty industry. She is author of the forthcoming book, How to Run Your Social Media Like an Agency and is a regular contributor to Fresh Vancouver Magazine. Appropriately, Cadi and I met up for a little holiday pampering at Maple Ridge’s Cloud Nine Nail Bar. Manicures and pedicures were on the menu as we talked shop and Cadi offered her insights on how to maintain social media sanity during the holidays. It comes as no surprise, given her business focus, that Cadi recommends planning your social media management to allow for plenty of downtime, holiday
Cadi offers five tips on how to maintain a presence and still take back some “metime.” 1. Craft a schedule for holiday posting and plan out what will work based on your other obligations. Cadi suggests prescheduling and automating some of your posts and including content that says so, and is transparent about the automation and that you are taking holiday time. 2. Manage your time. Cadi is a bit of a time-management ninja, running a fulltime business and raising two active kids. She suggests taking a good look at your holiday plans and blocking out social media management time around your family and celebration schedule. 3. Making Car-buying an Enjoyable Experience
Treating you like family and giving you the best selection in B.C. is what Maple Ridge Volkswagen is all about.
T
o some, having an enjoyable car-buying experience may sound like an oxymoron. Those who have been to Maple Ridge Volkswagen however, know that buying a car can be relaxing, friendly and even like reconnecting with good friends. That’s because car-buying is different at Maple Ridge Volkswagen. According to A.J. Hurford, Marketing Manager for the dealership, this is no accident, the refreshingly comfortable atmosphere is intentional. “We really want to help people buy a car in the most comfortable and convenient way possible,” A.J. said. “It starts with our process of greeting people when they arrive and allows our customers to guide the process at whatever speed they want. We work with them on their time.” That can mean making a purchase via the dealership’s very robust website, requesting a car from one of the three Volkswagen dealerships connected in the dealer group or simply taking the time to explain things on the lot. A.J. noted it’s the same process for new or used cars. People deserve genuine respect. “We make a point of taking any intimidation out of the process,” he said. “It’s about building relationships and getting to know how we can best meet someone’s needs.” Through the website, customers can arrange everything including choosing their ideal car, financing and even delivery anywhere in B.C. The paperwork and the car are delivered once the online process is complete. “Not only through the website, but also by coming into the dealership, people can access a huge amount of vehicles,” A.J. said. “In fact, between our three stores, we have the largest Volkswagen selection in the province. We sell one out of every four Volkswagens sold in B.C.” All of the used vehicles go through a rigorous inspection process and when they pass will become part of the certified pre-owned selection available
The staff at Maple Ridge Volkswagen sporting and supporting Jersey Day.
Local VW enthusiasts at WestKuste Dubfest. through the dealership. “We take the feedback we get very seriously,” A.J. noted. “We’re on DealerRater.ca and we drive people there to ensure we get their input and stay on top of it.” Part of keeping customers happy is ensuring staff are equipped with the best tools possible. Techs and sales staff go through constant training to endure that they can support our customers and offer ongoing post sale support that is second to none. “We also have standards for customer contact,” said A.J. “Inquiries online during business hours are responded to within just 30 minutes.” Locally managed, Maple Ridge Volkswagen is part of the largest publicly traded dealer group in Canada.
A local Volkswagen family of fanatics.
This ensures customers receive the selection they want, but the personal touch they deserve when looking for a car. “We love being part of the community and giving back to the people who have been part of our business,” A.J. noted. Just a few of the organizations the dealership has contributed to include the local toy drives, which the dealership helps organize every year, local schools, the startup of the Albion soccer club and activities at the Pitt Meadows arena. They have also worked closely with Basics for Babies and JRFM to help local families with basic necessities. They are also one of sponsors for WestKuste Dubfest. An event thrown for local VW enthusiasts and customers who
wanted to show off VW’s and meet other VW owners. This year over 100 cars were on display and many more people came to see all the fun. A BBQ was held by donation to Kidsport, z95.3 came out to broadcast live for the event, there were giveaways and prizes for the car show as well. “We want to be different from other dealerships and part of that is taking care of people,” commented A.J. “That’s how we’re different. By taking care of customers, everything else just falls into place.” Whether it’s to stop by and say hello or check out the offerings, visit Maple Ridge Volkswagen to feel right at home, and see the difference for yourself. today’sdrive 20 15 BMW X4
Your journey starts here.
SUV Versatility with the Look of a Coupe BY DAVID CHAO
BMW continues to introduce a new vehicle for every possible market segment, no matter how small the niche may be. Despite having numerous SUVs in its fleet already, BMW has decided it will attempt to take even a bigger slice of the “growing pie” by introducing the coupe-style X4. The X4 speaks to the customers who like the look of the X6 but want something a little smaller and more affordable. Also, these customers feel the X3 is a tad too traditional and mainstream. The new X4 fulfills both of those requirements. The X4 is an all-new vehicle for 2015. For those not familiar, BMW’s with an odd number in its name, 3, 5 and 7 Series are the more practical models. The even numbered vehicles, 2, 4 and 6 Series are the more sporty models.
Design
The new X4 is derived from the X3 but it sacrifices some practicality in the interest of style. BMW calls the X4 a “sports activity coupe” and it attempts to bridge a coupe and compact SUV. The most obvious difference between the X4 and the X3 is its sloping roofline, accented by sharp creases. This gives the X4 its own distinctive character. Also, while the X4 uses the X3’s architecture, it is longer and lower – this follows the recipe that BMW is using with the new 4 Series, which is carved out of the 3 Series. The styling of the X4 is the most controversial aspect of this new vehicle. Those not on board should know it follows a very successful formula BMW has used with the larger X6, and no one can deny the fact that the X4 stands out in the crowd. The cabin of the X4 is remarkably similar to the X3, which means it has a stylish, somewhat conservative design - it would have been nice if this new car received an all-new interior.
Stepping up to the xDrive35i increases both horsepower and torque to an even 300 each. This comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six that is second to none in the industry. Smooth and gutsy, the 3.0-litre is one of the best engines in the world in terms of overall feel and balance of power vs. economy. BMW’s xDrive AWD system comes standard, obviously, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are no other drivetrain or transmission options available at this time. BMW has made its name by building driver’s cars. Its SUVs, while sportier than many of its rivals, are understandably never as spirited as their cars. But the 2015 X4, still using X3 underpinnings, drives much more like a BMW car. It has the best electric power steering unit BMW has made yet. The lower ride height and retuned suspension give the X4 a different personality than the X3, though not as much as you think. It is a joy to drive on a twisty road and has four selectable driving modes – Sport+, Sport, Comfort and Eco Pro – allowing you to customize your driving experience. To make the X4 as fuel efficient as possible, it comes with BMW EFFICIENTDYNAMICS, which includes auto start/ stop, low rolling-resistance tires, brake-energy regeneration and a coasting function. This works in conjunction with the Eco Pro driving mode which changes the X4’s throttle response and gear shifts to further economy.
Environment
While the cabin of the X4 mostly resembles the X3, BMW has given it a few unique features to make it feel exclusive. The front passengers sit 20mm lower and the rear bench has a more pronounced two-seat appearance to accentuate the look of the exterior.
Much less controversial are the X4’s line-up of engines, because the X4 shares its engine lineup with others in the BMW range, including the 3 Series sedan, 4 Series and X3.
The X4 can seat five passengers, however only four will be truly comfortable. The rear centre seat is really just a perch. The two outer seats don’t have a lot of head-room because of the sloping roof, but anyone under six-feet should be fine.
Base model X4’s, the xDrive28i, comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder. It produces 240 hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. This engine is superb, with plenty of pulling power and surprising amount of get-up-and-go.
The most concerning aspect for rear passengers would be the floor height. Knee-room is quite good, but because the seats were lowered to provide adequate head-room, passengers may feel like their knees are a bit high.

As can be expected, the X4 has less cargo space than an X3. However, the rear seats are split 40/20/40 to make the space as versatile as possible. Accessing that space has been made easier thanks to the Smart Opener system which opens the tailgate by waving your foot under the rear bumper. The X4 comes with a good amount of standard technology features, including BMW’s iDrive with a 6.5-inch control display. This system can be upgraded to access the internet and have one of the best navigation systems on the market with Advanced Real Time Traffic Information. It is also available with many comforting safety options. These include Active Blind Spot Detection and a Lane Departure and Collision Warning system that gives a gentle vibration of the steering wheel to get your attention.
Features
The 2015 X4 has a starting price of $46,300. Standard equipment includes heated front seats, electric seats with driver memory, leather multi-function steering wheel, heated steering wheel, automatic climate control, dynamic cruise control, run flat tires, and a sunroof. Additional features include heated rear seats, surround view, rearview camera, parking sensors, adaptive headlights, head-up display, dynamic damper control, and an M Sport Package. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for the xDrive28i are 11.8 city, 8.4 highway and 10.3 combined. The xDrive35i returns 12.5 city, 8.7 highway for 10.8 combined.
Thumbs Up
The X4 provides a nice combination of sports coupe design with the versatility of a crossover. The X4 has one of the best steering feel in its class.
Thumbs Down
The X4’s styling is polarizing and its coupe-like proportions limits practicality. Rear visibility is quite poor.
The Bottom Line
The all-new BMW X4 is not an ordinary SUV and will please customers who want something unique and stylish.

A first of its kind housing research project, the report investigated best practices in the building approval process, from both the municipality, and builder’s perspectives. A highlight of Paul McCallum’s CFL career was hoisting the Grey Cup at BC Place Stadium in 2011. The BC Lions kicker has been kicking field goals in the Canadian Football League for the past 22 years and hopes to carry that tradition for some time to come.

McCallum still kickin’ at 44
Paul McCallum hopes to extend his CFL career to a 23rd season. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
His right foot is the tool that Paul McCallum uses to ply his trade, one that has made him a household name in Canadian Football League circles. Now 44, the former Maple Ridge resident and local realtor with MacDonald Realty kicked field goals on a consistent basis for the BC Lions this past season. And he’s not ready to hang up his cleats, just yet. McCallum’s career is a decorated one, to say the least. In a CFL career that has spanned 22 years, and hopefully counting, McCallum has won two Grey Cups, is a five-time CFL all-star, and has been awarded as the Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Canadian and as the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. In 2011, McCallum set the record, with 30, for the most all-time consecutive field goals made in the CFL. That also happened to be the year the Lions won their last Grey Cup, beating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34-23 before 54,313 fans at BC Place Stadium. McCallum also holds the record for the longest field goal made at 62 yards and highest field goal kicking accuracy in a single season.
As a young CFLer, McCallum never imagined he’d still be playing in his mid 40s. He is the oldest player in the league, mirroring the career of one of his predecessors, Lui Passaglia, who spent a record-breaking 25 years (1976–2000) as a Lion and scored more points in that time than any professional football player in the sport’s history. “I remember Lui kicking field goals at an even younger age than I am today and thinking, ‘When is he going to retire?’” McCallum said, in a recent phone interview with the TIMES. “But it comes by real quick and I’m still having fun, and before you know it, here I am.” This past season turned out to be a frustrating one for both McCallum and the Lions. “No one play BC was just averdefines a game.” age, finishing 9-9 Paul McCallum and ended up crossing over to the CFL East in the playoffs. The Lions were trounced 50-17 by the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern semifinal, and not long after that shellacking, the Leos fired head coach Mike Benevides. Individually, McCallum was good on 38 of his 42 field goals attempts. He led all CFL kickers with a 90.5 per cent field goal percentage, and made all 33 of his convert attempts. Also during the season, he became the second player in pro football history to surpass 3,000 career points, the other being Passaglia. So from a personal standpoint, it was a fine campaign by all standpoints, but McCallum

wasn’t satisfied, at all. “It was a very tough season for a lot of reasons, from a team standpoint,” McCallum said. “I played all right. I could have done better. I missed field goals that I don’t think I should have missed. It’s frustrating, looking back on the mistakes I made. But health-wise, and ability-wise, I feel I’d still like to play another year.” These days he’s focusing on being a realtor, which in actuality is a year-round occupation, even during the summer and fall when the CFL is in full-swing. He’s a pro when it comes to balancing his two occupations. To wit: the morning of the 2011 Grey Cup, McCallum was hard at work, booking showings for the following week. “It’s not hard at all,” McCallum said. “I never take more work than I can handle. I have more work [as a realtor during the season] but I just don’t take it.” When it comes to longevity in professional team sports, you couldn’t pick a better role than kicker. “It goes without saying,” McCallum said. “There’s no comparison with the amount of abuse that other players take on their bodies compared to mine. Absolutely, a field goal kicker has a longer career.” Another key to his longevity, especially in recent years, is keeping his cool. This past season fans never saw McCallum pump his fist or get overly emotional when he kicked a field goal. “It’s more along the lines of, doing it more relaxed, and more calm,” McCallum said. “It’s self confidence, you could say.”
