Thousands of trees were collected last weekend by various groups raising money for different causes, and a few of the organizations will be at it again this weekend. Harry Hooge Elementary’s parent advisory council will accept trees for a recommended minimum donation of $5 on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Funds raised will go towards building a new playground for intermediate students. The existing one was unsafe and condemned. People can bring their trees to 12280 230 St. on Saturday, if they want to help. In Albion, Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue members, along with 1st Haney Scouts, are chipping trees by donation again this weekend. They’re there from 9 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at 23598 105th Ave., next to Planet Ice. And in Pitt Meadows, trees are being accepted at Meadows Landscaping, 18020 Kennedy Rd., on behalf of the Pitt Meadows Lions and Pitt Meadows Girl Guides. The girls won’t be there this weekend, but donations continue to be accepted for the two groups. Trees can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. all week.

get drunk drivers off the road, and get them home safely in their own car. During this year’s campaign, which spanned nine different nights, ORN volunteers provided a total of 507 safe rides home. This was a seven per cent increase compared to the number of rides provided in 2013. Overall, the more than 500 safe rides home equalled a collective total of 13,161 km, driven by volunteers.
On New Year’s Eve alone, more than 50 ORN volunteers helped provide 77 safe rides home, and drove a combined total distance of 1,710 km. A number of food sponsors also stepped up to the plate on the final night, including Wok Box, Subway on 224th Street, Tim Hortons on 230th Street, Panago Pizza on 224th Street, Van Houtte coffee, Extra Foods, Save-On-Foods, Safeway, the Blacksheep Pub, and the
Kingfisher Pub. “Overall I think we had a great season,” said Dena Sorley, the volunteer director for Operation Red Nose Ridge-Meadows. “We had a lot of new volunteers this year, especially on New Years Eve, which was great,” she said. Sorley added that she is already looking forward to doing it all again next year.

Singing for a cause
Artists performing at a Saturday fundraiser that benefits Friends in Need Food Bank. by Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com
A five-hour concert featuring more than 20 local artists will happen this Saturday, with proceeds benefitting the Friends in Need Food Bank. Moonlight Marquee is being held at Blenz Coffee, at 122-22441 Dewdney Trunk Rd., on Jan. 10 from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Hollywood is the theme, with many artists expected to dress up as silver screen stars. Admission is free, but cash, non-perishable food, personal care supplies, and child care items are being collected in lieu of admission. For about a year, Kyle Herman of Halcyon Imagineers has been organizing such events for various organizations, such as the Salvation Army Caring Place. A musician himself, he enjoys helping community service groups, under the guise of a concert.
“I come at this from a faith-based angle, combined with an altruistic and humanitarian angle,” Herman said. “I want to help a good cause and have fun while doing it.” Each artist has about 15 minutes of stage time, with another 30 minutes reserved for headliner – Shades of Green. Music genres are diverse from old-fashion 1950s rock ‘n’ roll to soul, alternative rock to Irish/Celtic folk, symphony to bluegrass, and rap to hip hop. There will also be some poetry and spoken word with music, Herman explained. “This is like the Superbowl of music in Maple Ridge,” he said. “There is a tremendous amount of people performing and they have great heart and have tremendous talent.” Another local artist performing is TIMES photographer Rick Moyer. He’ll be belting out Elvis tunes during his 15 minutes of fame on the Blenz stage. “I’m participating because I like to get involved with community functions,” Moyer said. “Anything for a good cause.”

PT Cruiser last through AirCare An emissions site in Maple Meadows will be retooled after 22 years.
Maple Ridge AirCare manager Nadir Kaba and employee Phil Topp prepared to hang the closed sign on the fence outside the local centre on Dec. 31.
by Roxanne Hooper
rhooper@mrtimes.com
Just like moving the little car around on the Monopoly board, outgoing AirCare manager Nadir Kaba said Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows resident are rolling the dice when it comes to vehicle emissions as of Jan. 1. As the sign hanging on the fence in front of the centre says, drivers can now proceed directly to their AutoPlan dealer. The end of 2014 marked the end to the mandatory AirCare emissions testing that has been in place in the Lower Mainland for the past 22 years. So, drivers get to pass “go”, or in this case the old AirCare testing centre on Kingston Street. And, while they don’t actually collect $200 in play money – as they would in the game – they do save the biannual inspection fees and possible repair costs. While some are happy with the demise of AirCare, some of the staff – including manager Kaba – are not so pleased.
Not only does it mean unemployment for six people at the local site, but he fears it puts air quality in Metro Vancouver at risk again. In the hour counting down to last week’s closure of the Maple Ridge facility, the last of the furnishings were being hauled away, and only one customer came in to have his vehicle checked. Needing temporary insurance on his 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dr. Jason Holc said it was easier and cheaper to go through AirCare during its final hours than to wait and scramble to get it insured on the statutory holiday of Jan. 1. Only three of the six employees were on hand during those final hours, including Phil Topp, a Surrey resident and rela-
tive newbie with only eight months at AirCare. “I’m going to miss every type of car made and I’m going to miss the people,” said Topp, who said he’s already been busy job hunting. “I think I’m going to miss the people the most,” Kaba added, noting he only joined the Maple Ridge team four months ago, but described them as a closeknit family group. The current AirCare building and the acre-anda-half of land in the Maple Meadows industrial park will continue to be used, in small part, as a parking area for local HandyDART. But the rest of the space, Kaba said, was being taken over in early January by Maple Ridge Chrysler – for what he understands will be a prep site for cars being sold.

Our View
Dying deal delays change Joy and sorrow. That about sums up the reaction to the announcement that developers have backed off from a proposal to build a new shopping mall on the Albion flats. The vocal – and opposing – reactions to the proposal from its outset suggests there is little emotional middle ground to be found in the community. The reasoning of those unhappy at the current turn of events certainly makes sense. The SmartCentres landswap would have given the City of Maple Ridge more than 19 acres of land in exchange for 13 – and for those who believe more is always better, that’s a pretty good deal. And now the new agricultural fairground plus nearly a million dollars thrown in to sweeten the pot further are in jeopardy. The development would bring more shopping opportunities closer to home for a lot of people who currently feel they have to step outside of their local community to find the things they want – and it would provide a few more jobs, with resultant cuts in commuting times for the lucky souls who get them. But it’s just as easy to understand the rationale of those who heaved a sigh of albeit hopeful relief when the deal shifted to more tenuous ground. Every community has its proponents for retail and commercial growth, while the appeal for many who live in Maple Ridge is its rural nature. They take threats to the environment seriously. And they tend to oppose change. Those who prefer to live in “the country” will always be at odds with those who want a “progressive” community. But both sides should be wary of their joy or sorrow – past elections have shown that there was political will behind the kind of proposal that SmartCentres represented. Change remains in the wind. – B.G.

Post Christmas poem
Try to keep spirit going all year Dear Editor, (This poem may or may not be based upon actual events) to ’Twas days after Christmas the and all through the house, everyone slept in, except me and that mouse. Stockings no longer hung up with care and paper from presents strewn everywhere. With husband and children still snuggled in bed, I take precious moments with coffee instead. Me in my housecoat, I let out the cat. Maybe later, I hope, I’ll grab a quick nap. Then, all of a sudden, it no longer mattered, the kids were all up and the silence was shattered. It happened so quickly, much like a flash, they started to bicker and I was ready to smash.
Letters
Within what was said, I heard, “You’re a goof.” Then my ‘wtf’ blew through the roof. “You ungrateful rats,” I wanted to say, “should practice kindness and gratitude EVERY SINGLE day. “Christmas may come but once a year but an attitude of gratitude should stay with you dears. “Remember your actions, keep your words kind, be thoughtful of others and you will find “The spirit of Christmas remains with you true, inside and outside, in whatever you do. “Without bows or ribbons, paper or tape, the biggest present is NOW, appreciate. “And if that doesn’t work, please don’t forget, next year’s gifts have not been bought yet.” Lisa (Buzikievich) McLennan

Transportation
Time to consider leaving Metro Vancouver Dear Editor, In light of the transit referendum, now would be a good time for Maple Ridge to explore leaving Metro Vancouver and TransLink. We have not been well served in the past, and from reading the Metro Vancouver Mayors Council vision, it looks like tougher times ahead for outlying bedroom communities like Maple Ridge. Freeing Maple Ridge residents and businesses of TransLink’s never-ending levies and taxes – $.32 per $1,000 of assessed value on property taxes, $.06 per day on our BC Hydro bill, $.17 per litre gas tax, and now 0.5 per cent PST – could be the advantage that Maple Ridge needs to attract more light industry and businesses. Matt Ellis, Maple Ridge/Cottonwood

It’s another joke for the government failing in making an effort to help kids avoid their destiny!” – Scotty Hulshof “I’m hoping this riding will see a 30 per cent increase in voter turnout in the federal elections… Time to end the old patriarchy that serves no one but itself.” – Becky Bee “Such a pathetic reality, our adolescents don’t deserve a safe place, but more missiles, junk mail, etc, that is important. Tax adds incentive to leave
Dear Editor, Our 17-cent per litre regional gas tax already motivates consumers to leave Metro Vancouver. We go to Abbotsford and Mission, and some to Washington State to gas up then do some other shopping along the way. A regional sales tax simply adds more motivation to leave Metro Vancouver. Maple Ridge already is facing an exodus of shoppers avoiding the regional gas tax. A regional sales tax will increase the exodus and will hurt local retailers. It will cost us local jobs. It will cause retailers contemplating opening new stores in our community to look elsewhere. Why would anyone buy a TV, fridge, or car in Maple Ridge? Within the current governance process, the provincial government has the authority and the responsibility to tell the mayors to start over. They will need more time, but it makes more sense to do it right than to implement a seriously flawed tax. Art Van Pelt, Maple Ridge

Trees sold to supporters
Dear Editor, 1st Haney Scout Group wishes a happy New Year to all your readers. We wish to thank all those who support Scouting in Maple Ridge, and especially those who bought Christmas trees from the 1st Haney Christmas tree lot at CAPS Westwood Cycle. This was our third year. We had a very successful sale and look forward to seeing everyone back next year. You may have to come early next year, as we sold out a week ahead of schedule… we will try our best to have enough next year! We also want to extend a huge thanks to the staff at CAPS Westwood Cycle and NORCO Bicycles for all their support with this year’s Christmas tree sales and bike raffle. Salvation Army
Teenager pays it forward Kettle drive donations are down this year. by Christopher Sun
csun@mrtimes.com
Cash instead of Christmas presents is what Rylee Dickson, 12, requested this year, but it wasn’t so she can freely buy whatever she wanted at the mall. On Christmas Eve, she gave $300, which she received in lieu of presents, to the Salvation Army Caring Place. “I felt bad because every year I get so much,” Rylee told The TIMES. “l feel like I’m almost spoiled because I have so much and there are a lot of people who don’t have anything, not even food.” Rylee came up with the idea a few months ago and her decision was reaffirmed after participating in her school’s 12 Days of Paying it Forward initiative. In December, Grade 6 and 7 Blue Mountain students spent 12 days performing random goodness in the community, such as collecting blankets for the SPCA, writing Christmas cards for seniors living at Greystone Manor, and holding up signs during two morning rush hours, wishing drivers a good day. “I already had the idea, but this developed it,” Rylee explained.
FRIENDLY AND GENTLE
FAMILY & COSMETIC DENTISTRY Darlene Dickson photo
Salvation Army’s Darrell Pilgrim received $300 from Rylee Dickson. However, Rylee wasn’t completely giftless on Christmas Day. She received stocking stuffers and a present from her grandmother, who purchased her present before knowing Rylee’s wishes. “She’s very generous,” said Rylee’s mom, Darlene. “She is very much that kind of kid who likes to give instead of receive. She’s a very giving person.” Caring Place’s Darrell Pilgrim formally received the $300 on Dec. 24. He said the money Rylee donated will buy 900 bagged lunches for school kids. The Caring Place provides 175 lunches to elementary school children every school day. “It’s awesome and great,” Pilgrim said. “We actually had a couple of kids bring in money this year.” About $700 was received from those kids and that
money is appreciated, considering Christmas donations were down this year. The local Salvation Army raised $82,000 from its Christmas kettles, $10,000 below the goal and slightly below the $86,000 raised last year. Pilgrim expects they will need to cut back on some of their offerings next year to make up the difference. “We might have to cutback on the meals we provide, but I don’t know yet,” Pilgrim said. “I think the main reason donations are down is because life is getting more expensive, people have less disposable income to put in the kettle.” There was also a shortage of volunteers to man the kettles, but Pilgrim doesn’t think that played a role in the decrease in donations. A total of 250 people donated their time.

This past Friday, I checked out The Interview at Hollywood 3 Cinemas. The ability for me and others to watch the film was “about freedom of speech” said theatre manager, Moby Amarsi. “If people want to watch this film, they should be able to.” The film is playing at the theatre until this evening, but how has the response been so far? “Very good,” Amarsi said. “It’s been a heavier showing than other films.” Theatres at Hollywood 3 have between 130 and 140-person capacity. One showing of the film almost sold out, Amarsi added.

Applications now due The deadline looms for employers looking to be a part of a summer work program.
NOW OW
by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
While the hazy, crazy days of summer may seem like a distant dream for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents right now, the clock is ticking for employers who want to get involved with the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. Randy Kamp CSJ provides funding to not-forMP profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses, to help create summer job opportunities for students. Employers wishing to partake in the program have until Jan. 30 to apply for funding, which in turn can help them hire qualified young people, between the ages of 15 to 30, who are full-time students and intend to return to school in the fall. Not-for-profit employers could receive up to 100 per cent of B.C.’s minimum hourly wage and employmentrelated costs. Public-sector employers and small businesses could receive up to 50 per cent. “Our government’s priorities are creating jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity,” said Randy Kamp, MP for Maple Ride-Pitt Meadows-Mission. “I encourage employers to apply for funding to create jobs that will help students, employers and their local economies,” he said. Employers can apply for the funding online at servicecanada.gc.ca/csj. People can also find further information by calling 1800-935-5555, or by visiting the Ridge Meadows Service Canada centre, located at 22325 Lougheed Hwy., between 8:30 and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.

“I couldn’t be happier with my new Fiat 500” Kim and her team were excellent and our new car buying experience couldn’t have been better. They had exactly the car we wanted on the lot so we took it for a drive and loved it. Everyone at the dealership was helpful and attentive but they didn’t make us feel pressured at all. Once we decided to buy the car, it was ready exactly when it was supposed to be and the after sales service has been superb. We live in Maple Ridge so it’s local for us but the service and experience was so good that it’s worth driving for.

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!
M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,
I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Grandpa Les, his sons Kenny and Rob, and Kenny’s daughters Kate and Becca, all shared the stage for a rendition Oh Holy Night during the annual Meals on Wheels fundraising concert last month. It was an incredibly powerful moment in an tremendous show, said event chair Joanne Leginus, director of administrative services for the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Community Services. The votes are in and the finalists have been announced for this year’s Business Excellence Awards Gala. Scheduled for Saturday, Feb 21, the event promises to be an “Academy Award, lift-the-briefcases, type of event,” said Terry Becker, president of the Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The finalists were chosen after a two-day interview process, and now the next step will involve three judges who will interview the finalists, before casting a blind vote on their selections, Becker explained. Tickets to the event are going fast, Becker noted, and those that are interested in attending can purchase tickets online at www. ridgemeadowschamber.com, or at the chamber office, located at 12492 Harris Rd. in Pitt Meadows. The selection process this year was a little more stringent, said Becker. She credited the chamber’s executive director Andrea Madden with bringing in ideas from her time working in the Tri-Cities. Among the highlights, Dr. Cobi Slater, Fred Formosa, and Vicki McLeod were chosen as finalists for Business Leader of the Year, while Euro-Rite Cabinets, Hopcott Premium Meats, and Meadowridge School are all contenders for Business of the Year.
Rob in conjunction with community services. And it was a record-breaking year, Leginus said. It raised close to $20,000 this year. “We’ve definitely never had that much money from this event before,” she said, noting last year topped out at $14,600. This year’s success was attributed in part to the 300-plus people who attended, along with all the donors and sponsors that step up. But Leginus credited ScotiaBank for pushing them well over the top this year, by matching up to $5,000 raised through the silent auction. “We’re really honoured,” Leginus said, not only for all the support of Hess and the other performers offer, but for the support of the community. “People really rally around to support Meals on Wheels, and people really enjoy listening to Rob. He really sings and speaks from the heart… it makes for an incredible event.”

LR4
Go Anywhere in Comfort been improved to 14.3L/100km combined.
BY DAVID CHAO
improve the in-car experience. Land Rover InControl Apps compliment the existing system and brings the convenience, familiarity and original look and feel of compatible smartphone apps into the LR4.
Aiding that improvement is the new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and standard Intelligent Stop/ Start system.
The Land Rover LR4 has earned a reputation as the ultimate all-purpose vehicle for many years, thanks to its go-anywhere capability. The LR4, known as the Discovery in some markets, has sold over 1,100,000 units and won 219 international awards since its introduction in 1989. This illustrates the Land Rover’s tremendous capability and versatility.
Developed with some of the world’s leading app creators, InControl Apps offer services such as satellite-navigation, media streaming, internet radio and location services. Of course, it also provides easy access to the phone’s contacts, calendar and music library.
Already equipped with Land Rover’s rotary gear selector and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, the LR4 is now available with Adaptive Cruise Control to make driving easier. This system maintains a consistent gap between the LR4 and the vehicle ahead when the adaptive cruise is “engaged.”
Able to handle any terrain on the Earth, the LR4 is a true seven-seater and can be arranged in a variety of configurations to carry an assortment of cargo. Land Rover is celebrating 25 years of the Discovery; to commemorate, they have released new special features which further heighten the level of luxury.
Many compatible apps already exist, and the range is continually expanding with new content becoming available every time the app updates.
While features like cruise control and paddle shifters create a more relaxed motorway experience, the LR4 is still the leader when it comes to mountainous driving. Land Rover offers the choice of a newer single-speed transfer box, or a twin-speed with high and low ranges to tackle the most demanding off-road conditions.
Design
The LR4 uses body-on-frame construction which gives it the extra “toughness” often missing in today’s SUVs that are actually more like a tall wagon. This kind of design normally leads to a bouncy ride, but Land Rover tuned the underpinnings to also deliver smooth on-road behaviour that’s second to none in this class.
Features
Starting prices for the 2015 Land Rover LR4 range from $59,990 to $72,990. Standard equipment includes heated front seats, heated leather steering wheel, heated windshield, seven-inch colour touchscreen, and Bluetooth phone connectivity.
The adjustable four-corner air suspension can be optimized to comfortably conquer any terrain by merely turning a dial. Hill Descent Control allows even novice offroad drivers to easily traverse the most demanding trials by holding a slow and steady speed down steep grades.
The 2015 LR4 retains Land Rover’s classic squared-off shape - this serves as a reminder to its utilitarian, rugged roots. That’s not to say that Land Rover hasn’t softened the look over time. This year, the LR4 has sophisticated new headlights and a smooth front bumper design. The twopiece asymmetric tailgate is both distinctive and useful, and the panoramic glass roof is pure luxury. Overall, the look is very upscale and the car has aged well.
Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include passive keyless entry, rear climate control, front and rear parking aids, rearview camera, and HDD navigation.
I should point out though; the LR4’s top-heavy design makes it lean in corners when driven fast around turns. However, it does have a comparatively tight turning circle, which is nice for navigating both trails and parking lots.
Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) in the base model are 16.2 city, 12.1 highway and 14.3 combined.
Thumbs Up
Environment
The base model is luxurious inside, but the top-of-therange model is superb from any seating position. There is also no shortage of options and accessories to outfit a LR4 to your exact preference. The Land Rover is available in three trim levels – base, HSE and HSE LUX. The HSE LUX now comes standard with Windsor Leather seats.
Performance
Being an upscale SUV, the LR4 boasts high quality materials and the intuitive and clearly labelled controls provide a nice tactile feel.
The LR4 is a truly off-roader in every sense. Its air suspension is compliant and comfortable on the highway, yet capable of crawling over rocks and hills.
The cabin is roomy, and with its stadium seating, the LR4 allows each passenger a good view of the outside world. The large windows, especially the panoramic glass roof, create an airy feeling. This open-airy design is still unique to LR4.
While the LR4 is immensely versatile and luxurious, it is far from the most efficient SUV on the market. It’s beginning to show its age against newer, modernized SUVs from its competition.
Thumbs Down
The LR4 comes standard with five seats, but an optional third row expands capacity to seven. The legroom in the third row is tight, however, so it’s best suited for children.
With ever-tightening fuel economy standards, last year Land Rover replaced the LR4’s 5.0-litre V8 with a supercharged 3.0-litre V6. Power is still respectable at 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, but efficiency has
The Bottom Line
If you want a traditional body-on-frame design that won’t take a backseat to any challenging road condition, look no further than the Land Rover LR4.
