Food no longer fair game for garbage New rules and regulations concerning organics disposal began this month. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
“Far too much,” is the descriptive amount Malcolm Brodie used when discussing how much garbage ends up in the landfill from across Metro Vancouver, including Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
And it was with this in mind that new waste disposal rules, specifically targeting “Green Waste,” came into effect at the beginning of this month, when the organics disposal ban was introduced. “Food waste comprises about 40 per cent of residential garbage,” said Brodie, chair of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Committee. The ban means residents and businesses are now required to separate organic materials like kitchen scraps and yard trimmings from their regular waste, with the aim of reducing

the amount of material that could otherwise be composted from ending up in a landfill. “Almost a third of the food we buy ends up in the garbage, so by simply reducing the amount of food we waste, and recycling our scraps, we can keep tonnes of food out of the landfill,” Brodie added. And though Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents won’t see any major disruptions to how they already dispose of their garbage, there are a few key things residents in both cities should be aware of.
Online, all the time...
“When residents bring their food scraps to the Maple Ridge Transfer station, they should let the cashier at the scale house know,” explained Leanne Koehn, of the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society. The green waste tipping fee is actually lower than the tipping fee for garbage, Koehn noted. “Garbage is $113 at tonne, with a $10 minimum, while green waste is only $66 a tonne, with a $6 minimum,” she said, adding no plastic is allowed in the food waste totes.

I highly recommend Shayne and all the staff at Laminate Warehouse. The price point, quality & their knowledge of the product is second to none. Being a bit of a DIY guy, I've installed a few different types of laminate flooring over the years and their QUICK LOCK system is so easy to install even my 6 year old was helping out! I've referred Laminate Warehouse to family members & clients and have only heard positive feedback. My Mom just had some carpet replaced and she was extremely happy with the service and quality...we would strongly recommend LAMINATE WAREHOUSE to anyone considering new flooring!........... A craft project turned ugly Tuesday morning, sending one Silver Valley woman to hospital with burns to her hand. The woman had been heating wax on the stove when the wax caught fire. While it was being carried outside, the flaming pot was dropped and ignited a section of wall that was subsequently burned floor to ceiling. “It was a pretty close call,” said Maple Ridge fire chief Dane Spence. • More at www.mrtimes.com
Two hurt in crash Thick fog over Maple Ridge Tuesday night prohibited an air ambulance from landing, so two victims of a three-car crash on the Haney Bypass had to be transported by ground. Mounties are still investigating the cause of the accident that occurred in the 23000 block of Haney Bypass just before 7 p.m. • More at www.mrtimes.com
Dog parks unveiled Following heated debate surrounding the closure of a dog park at Maple Ridge’s Volker Park last summer, the parks commission began casting about to find new locations for off-leash dog parks. After months of trials and parkuser consultation, three new dog parks are being rolled out in the City this year. • More at www.mrtimes.com
Pitt criminal arrested A criminal from Pitt Meadows – well known to police – is in jail. While Mounties are still investigating other mail thefts that spiked in Maple Ridge during the Christmas holidays, they made an arrest on Friday in connection with theft from a community mailbox in the Tamarack subdivision of Albion during late December, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. Shawn Bradley Gillam, 32, is charged with stealing mail. He’s been remanded in custody until Jan. 21, when he’ll be back in Port Coquitlam provincial courthouse via video conferencing to fix a trial date. • More at www.mrtimes.com

The hockey goaltenderturned-pastor is also a published author, with his recently written book Clear Minds & Dirty Feet available on Amazon and at the House of James, a Christian book and music store in Abbotsford. Morrison is one of the pastors at Maple Ridge Baptist Church, and this past spring, was hired by the church to be the primary teacher/ preacher. But his personal history in Maple Ridge dates back much further. He played goal for the junior B Ridge Meadows Flames during the 1998/99 season, before graduating to the B.C. Junior Hockey League (junior A) ranks, tending the cage for the Surrey Eagles and Coquitlam Express, respectively. “I’m very thankful for my experience in Maple Ridge with Mr. Stonehouse and the Flames organization many years ago,” the now 33-year-old soonto-be-dad said, speaking about former Flames owner Ray Stonehouse. “It is a history I have seldom have time to reflect on anymore.” His journey is no different than any other hockey playing kid in Canada. “I’ve always wanted to be in the NHL,” he said. “I dreamt of being the first Canuck to hoist the Stanley Cup.” Morrison’s junior career ended at 20, and that’s when he hung up the goaltender gear for good. “My last game of junior was the last time I played goalie,” he said. “I haven’t played goalie for 13 years. Jim MacLeod, a supervisor at the Ridge Meadows Transfer Station, stood next to the new organic disposal and food waste bins at the station on Tuesday. New rules concerning how residents and businesses get rid of their organic materials and food scraps are now in effect.
Enforcement will be multi-phased …continued from page A1
Once through the scale at the station, people will be directed up to the main tipping floor, where there are large totes set up to receive the food waste. Organic materials dropped off at the Maple Ridge Transfer Station are sent to the Organics Transfer Station in Pitt Meadows and/or the Harvest Power facility in Richmond for processing into soil, mulch, & natural fertilizers, added Koehn. Though the organics disposal ban started on Jan. 1, there will be no financial penalties levied against haulers for the first six months of the program. During this time, the ban – and the new rules surrounding it – will be enforced though education. Loads of waste that are brought to a transfer station with more than 25 per cent food will be identified, and the hauler of that load will be reminded of the ban, and provided with further information. As of July 1, 2015, financial enforcement of the ban will begin. Waste loads with more than 25 per cent visible food will be surcharged and additional 50 per cent of the cost of disposal. For example, a $100 load with more than 25 per cent visible food waste would be charged $150. In general, according to Metro Vancouver, this type of load is gen-

Police training exercise scares Hammond neighbours A neighbourhood went into lockdown after a suspicious man with a gun was spotted on their street. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com
A Hammond neighbourhood went into lockdown mode late Wednesday morning, after a man with a gun was spotted on Graves Street. Neighbours started calling each other, and even notified the nearby school. “In today’s society, with all that’s going on in the world, when something like this happens, everyone gets nervous,” Baust said. About 40 minutes later, when a police dog was spotted on the street with obvious markings, one neighbour went out to confirm it was safe. He learned it had all been a training exercise. It was then, Baust said, that the residents in the 117th Avenue and Graves Street area once again did an unofficial neighbourhood call out and notified each other it was a false alarm. Musical tributes are being arranged to honour musician Judith Bergthorson. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com
The most fitting final tribute for Judith Bergthorson is a musical celebration, and that’s exactly what her friends and family are in the midst of organizing. Judith Bergthorson Bergthorson, the 66-year-old founder and namesake of the Bergthorson 1948 - 2015 Academy of Musical Arts, died Saturday after a year-long battle with an aggressive and rare form of ovarian cancer. Now, an open mic musical memorial celebrating her life is being arranged for Sunday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. at The ACT, said her husband Robert Hornsey. Born and raised on the Prairies, Bergthorson moved from Stonewall, Man. to Maple Ridge a dozen years ago and quickly embarked on the creation of the academy. Describing her as a “visionary leader,” Hornsey said his wife “set out to use music as a vehicle to change peoples’ lives… Judith was proud and confident that goal had been largely achieved.” Over the years, he estimates that she touched more than 5,000 “musical lives,” and credited her with not only creating the academy and connected performance society, but for helping bring the True North Fraser Bluegrass Festival to Maple Ridge. “If you feel that Judith has somehow touched your life, and you would like to share in this tribute as an attendee or even performer,” Hornsey asks that people to watch the website or Facebook for details or email contact information to visionperformance@hotmail.com. Similarly, a musical tribute to Bergthorson will likely be held in Manitoba this summer.

Maple Ridge
Albion school site figures in debate
Lengthy discussion centred on future development, and talking to the board of education. by Roxanne Hooper
rhooper@mrtimes.com
A call was issued for creative thinking by some local politicians. Maple Ridge council cannot force the local school district – or more specifically, the education ministry – to purchase land designated for future institutional use. But Tuesday night, returning council member Gordy Robson suggested council might be able to force owners and developers of such lands – if they’re unable to sell to the school district – to look at other educational options. “I think we should be looking at alternatives,” rather than giving up hope the designated sites could one day house a school, Robson said. Robson, a founder of Meadowridge School a few decades ago, suggested alternative educational facilities. He proposed alternative schools might prove enticing to local families currently unhappy with having to bus or chauffeur their kids across town to a public school, and he suggested taking such “bold” moves would make the education minister sit up and pay attention to the current and “very real need” for new schools in developing areas within the municipality’s boundaries. And with a council that seems willing to “think outside the box” on issues, he said, maybe some creative ideas could surface to help fill a need for schools as development continues in the eastern half of Maple Ridge – especially Albion, Silver Valley, and Thornhill. Maple Ridge council had been asked at Tuesday’s meeting to push
Councillor Gordy Robson proposed an unusual tactic that would force developers of institutional lands to come up with alternative school options. a rezoning request through first and second reading, then on to public hearing, for a property at 24152 112th Ave. The proposal was for an 11-acre “topographically challenged” site – currently designated for a joint school and neighbourhood park and rural residential lots. Owners wish to be rezoned to allow for higher density housing (25 units) and a two-acre neighbourhood park that would be sold to the municipality. It is being argued that, since the school district has no intention of using the land for a school, the developers should be able to rezone. In a school district letter in 2009, addressed to then parks manager Mike Murray (now chair of the school district), then-board chair Kathie Ward said there was a commitment to continue looking for viable school sites in Albion, but such sites could not be purchased without provincial support. According to a report to council, that stance has not since altered. School District 42 owns two lots in the 24100 block of 104th Avenue and
have noted that these properties are “considered the priority school site” for Albion. Consequently, the owners of the 112th Avenue want to build, and need to rezone. The rezoning request, along with Robson’s suggestion, opened up lengthy discussion of the issue of schools in the community, and in the report, council was told that a strategic school facilities review, due more than a year ago, is further delayed until at least October 2015. Several councillors expressed frustration at the delays, and were upset over the lack of clear planning for a new school in the region. They felt it leaves council and property owners, alike, in a state of limbo. Councillor Kiersten Duncan made a deferral motion to obtain information on the school district’s timeline to study need for new school facilities in the neighbourhood. Council voted against the deferral, and the motion to move the application to public hearing was defeated, effectively ending the development proposal for this site, with a lone vote to move it forward by Councillor Craig Speirs. Even his vote wasn’t a ringing endorsement for the application. He noted that this proposed school site is “lost to us” and “it’s best just to move on.” Moreover, he said, he can’t support Robson’s suggestion that the City try forcing the developer to create a private school. Councillor Corisa Bell and Mayor Nicole Read, among others, brought up a need by the new council to visit how they deal with development in Maple Ridge moving forward, and indicated intentions to review the issue in detail. At the same time, the new council wants to sit down with the new school board to discuss existing and future school options.

Pitt councillors put together action list
A council-generated list of desires and goals for the City was unveiled on Tuesday night. by Eric Zimmer
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker and his council colleagues put forward their “Issues to Review” list Tuesday night. The “Council Four-Year Action Table” consists of more than 80 items, including topics from traffic calming to youth engagement. “All of the items and conversations that we had during the election, we’re going to respect and put them on an action item list for the next four years,” Becker said.
But the mayor pointed out that the list is just that: a list. “It’s a list of ‘issues’ items that we collectively have heard from constituents about during and after the election,” Becker said. “As a council, we felt that it is important to be able to go back, to tell our constituents that their voices were heard and that all of those issues will be reviewed by council during our term.” The list is Becker’s “best efforts at compiling everybody’s initiatives,” as well as Pitt Meadows CAO Kim Grout’s “action items.” “That’s not to say that all of these issues will receive majority council approval to move action,” he added. The complete list will be put into a City work plan over the next four years.
Council has also set aside two full days of strategic planning and priority setting work for February and March, during which all City priorities will be generated. While Becker said the “vast majority” of the issues did not come as a surprise to him, some of the more “specific or operational ones” were news to the mayor – such as a desire to review animal welfare management. As for priorities in tackling the list? “My top items remain the four ‘T’s from the election: taxes, transportation, transparency, and teamwork,” Becker said. The complete list is available on the City’s website at www.pittmeadows.bc.ca.

Our View
Mad mayor not big threat Newly elected Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell has recently admitted to lying about an extramarital affair which came to light when Atwell called 911 after a fracas with the woman’s fiancé. But that’s largely a private matter. Of more concern to Saanich residents is the fact that Atwell has already been censured by his own council after he tried to force a senior civic staffer out of office, costing the municipality $488,000 in severance. He’s now claiming that someone is bugging his computer and that the local police are harassing him. Not bad for someone who’s been in office less than two months. Atwell joins the list of eccentric and oddball mayors who have served from tiny towns of a few hundred to the biggest city in the land. Atwell seems to be angling for the title of “Most Controversial Mayor,” now that Toronto’s Rob Ford has moved back to being a councillor. Fortunately, most Canadian municipalities, including all of those in B.C., run under what’s known as a “weak mayor” system. The mayor is definitely the key spokesperson for their city or town, but when it comes to powers, they have only a handful that exceed those of the rest of the councillors. We’re just now getting to know a host of new councillors and mayors, with thousands of new officials taking their seats after last November’s elections and the Christmas break. Some of them will do great things for their towns, uniting fractious neighbourhoods, building infrastructure, helping build communities that host good homes, jobs, and schools. Some of them won’t work out quite so well. The lesson seems to be that not putting too much power in any one official’s hands, whether mayor or councillor, is a pretty good idea. And that, just maybe, recall legislation might not hurt. – M.C.

Maple Ridge Secondary’s class of 2015, along with parents and staff, were out collecting bottles and cans last Saturday, raising $1,407 for the annual dry grad. “It was fantastic,” said culinary arts
instructor Trevor Randle, who also wears the dry grad co-ordinator hat. “We had a great response from the community.” Money raised goes towards prizes at the dry grad, such as a television, gas cards, and a mini-fridge. “We focus on things they will be needing in post-secondary,” Randle explained. “All money raised goes directly to the grads.” There will be more fundraising in the near future, but for now, the next one planned is MRSS Show and Shine. The annual car show will held on May 24.

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!
M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,
I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

For local curler Donna Maitland, the BC Women’s Scotties Provincial Championships curling competition coming to Maple Ridge next week will “bring back special memories.” Taking place next Wednesday to Sunday (Jan. 21-25) and hosted by the Golden Ears Winter Club, (GEWC) the competition is nothing new to Maitland. Twenty-five years ago, she competed as a third for Kelley Law and won the Provincials along with teammates second Karen Koyanagi and lead Terry Becker. The Law rink then went on to represent B.C. at the 1990 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Ottawa. It was the was the first time the Golden Ears Winter Club had won a ladies’ provincial championship. Then, in 2003, Toni Fister became the second women’s team from GEWC to win a BC Women’s championship. Budgeting
Reduce food waste, save
A
ccording to the American Heritage Dictionary, “waste not, want not” was first recorded in 1772, but was derived from an earlier version, “wilful waste makes woeful want,” recorded in 1576. Today, those terms take on a whole new urgency, as bills roll in from our holiday spending sprees. One of the most easily influenced home expenses is our food budgets. What if I told you that you could have free vegetable broth? Currently, whenever you work with vegetables (onions, carrots, celery, etc.) the end trimmings are going into the compost, garburator, or garbage. Dedicate a large food storage bag in the freezer for end cuts and peelings, instead, and add to the mix until the bag is full. Empty the contents into a large pot, cover with cold water to the top of the vegetables, bring to a boil, and then turn the heat to low and simmer for one hour, uncovered. Strain and season to taste with salt and pepper, and you have vegetable stock from ingredients that would have previously been discarded. A great addition to this bag would be fresh herb stems. There is a ton of flavour in the inedible woody stems to add to your homemade vegetable stock. Make a soup from scratch with your broth, or pour it into ice cube trays and create a second freezer bag of cubed stock: perfect for when you need a small amount of broth to make or finish a sauce. The rinds from hard cheeses also tend to end up in the garbage bin, but they could bring extra essence to soups. For example, whenever making Minestrone (Italian vegetable soup) we always toss a chunk of Parmesan rind

into the broth. At the end of cooking, the rind is simply removed and discarded. Leftover bacon fat, although not particularly healthy, can also be put to use in the kitchen. Moderation needs to be practiced here, but on occasion, a warm bacon dressing on spinach greens is amazingly delicious. Add the following to the rendered bacon fat from a half pound (227g) of bacon, but make sure the bacon fat is not too hot, or it will splatter when you add three tablespoons apple cider vinegar, one to two tablespoons maple syrup, two teaspoons Dijon or grainy mustard, one half teaspoon dried thyme leaves, and a sprinkle of fresh cracked pepper. Stir over medium heat until very warm, and then serve immediately. Become s a conscientious cook. Pay attention to everything discarded in the kitchen, and attempt to find new and innovative uses. The Internet makes a great resource when investigating ideas, and answers many questions you may have about food safety, which also needs to be emphasized here.

Your journey starts here.
Journey
They say that life is in the journey, not the destination. BY BRENDAN McALEER

Millennium Falcon. The glove box isn’t especially huge, but there’s a bin under the passenger’s seat, and two more under the floorboards on each side in the back. Emergency snacks, backup Lego for long ferry waits, or maybe just a diaper emergency kit? That’s up to you, just be aware you can’t really access them when on the move.
Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer
Well, Dodge might be asking you to take a fairly literal interpretation of that saying with their family-sized crossover, a three-row replacement for the venerable Caravan minivan. That’s right, the Caravan is no more. You’ll still be able to buy a Chrysler Town and Country, but as for the inexpensive van that got all kinds of Canadian families to hockey practice, soccer practice, dance recitals, and piano lessons, sliding doors are on their way out. Minivans as a segment are in a slow decline as more young parents try to avoid looking like their parents.
kid-friendly tunes on the stereo, the Journey proves agreeable. Grip from the all-wheel-drive system was perfectly acceptable on slippery roads, and at-speed on the highway, wind-noise wasn’t really an issue.
Rear seat passengers also have access to a conventional household plug and 12V power outlet, for charging electronic devices. My tester also came with the $1200 rear video entertainment group, but given that most young kids these days have iPad minis and the like for much less than that, know that there are enough outlets to keep everybody charged and quiet.
This has inspired the rise of crossovers like these, which aren’t as thirsty as the old body-on-frame SUVs which once dominated the road, but still have some of that rugged image. Problem is, they’re usually compromised in one way or another, trying to be both cargo-hauler and still retain a modicum of street cred.
For the driver, the Journey’s dashboard is a very plain affair, almost completely without ornamentation except for the 8.4” Uconnect touchscreen. This controls everything in the car including the heated steering wheel – always a nice touch when the thermometer starts falling – and is very easy to navigate through. Uconnect’s voice command is better than some other options out there, and its display is large enough not to distract too much from the task at hand.
So, how does the Journey fare? Let’s wrestle in a couple of car seats and find out.
Design:
Swathed in bright red paint and fitted with 19” black alloys, the Journey certainly looks tough enough to handle a Canadian winter. That big Dodge crosshair grille has presence, and the curved bar that’s meant to imitate a lightbar/skidplate combo looks ready to ram its way through the nearest snowbank.
Performance:
From other angles, the main impression is one of useful boxiness. That’s great – if the old Caravan didn’t have much to recommend it as a status symbol, it was at the very least extremely practical. The Journey has much better ground clearance, of course, but it’s still got the same squared-off lines, and doesn’t appear over styled at the rear, favouring function over form.
The Journey comes with two engine options: a 2.4L 4cyl making 173hp and Chrysler/Dodge’s ubiquitous 3.6L V6, which puts out a distinctly healthier 283hp. All-wheel-drive is only available with V6 models, and the base four-cylinder comes mated to a four-speed automatic transmission – pretty outdated technology. On the other hand, the V6 and AWD tester had more than enough shove for passing and highway onramps, even when loaded up with the entire family and all the cargo needed to spend a few days travelling. The 6-speed automatic is a bit rough in engagement, especially when cold, but the ride and handling are quite good, even on a winding country road.
Environment:
Inside the cabin, yes indeed, it’s quite roomy. There are three rows of seats here, but the rear is really only a jumpseat for temporary soccer team carpool duty. However, the first two rows have plenty of space for passengers, whether they ride in Gap khakis, or in a rear-facing child seat.
You don’t really hustle a car with a small child strapped in the back, not if you don’t want to end up hosing vomit out of the back seats, so for slow and smooth driving with some

Features:
Being a high-level trim in priced in the midthirties, my Crossroads tester came with every conceivable feature. Leather seats were heated up front, there was the aforementioned heated steering wheel, and everyone had a chance to fiddle with the temperature with three-zone automatic climate control. I’d probably give the optional DVD system a miss, but the satellite navigation and backup camera package are probably a must-check at this level. Both were very easy to use, as was the streaming Bluetooth audio, and handsfree phone operation. Fuel economy for all-wheel-drive and the V6 gets somewhat unimpressive scores of 14.5L/100kms city or 9.9L/100kms highway, and real-world figures were similarly in the low teens. Buying the four-cylinder for economy might not be the smartest move, however, as it’s only a few litres better on paper, and being so much down on power, you’d have to push it a little harder.
Green Light:
Good feature load-out; smooth, comfortable ride; easy-touse infotainment; excellent space
Stop Sign:
Quite thirsty; transmission could be smoother; four-cylinder option needs better transmission
The Checkered Flag:
A smartly-equipped machine for Canadian families who wouldn’t be caught dead in a minivan

“Nice” can be a bit of an epithet, but apart from a slight tendency to lurch when called upon to shift quickly, the Journey’s unremarkable ride, handling, and performance blended into the background, just what you want in a family vehicle. It didn’t thrill, but neither did anyone complain.
