Transportation

Mayors divided on TransLink referendum

Nicole Read and John Becker have transit wishlists for their communities. by Troy Landreville tlandrevill@mrtimes.com

The newly elected mayors of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows agree on many things, but not on sending a transit tax hike to referendum. The fate of a 0.5 per cent increase to the provincial sales tax in Metro Vancouver, imposed by TransLink to pay for transportation improvements as well as a new Pattullo Bridge, will soon be in locals’ hands.

Last month, Metro Vancouver mayors voted 18-3 in favour of a referendum that would ask the public to vote on raising the PST from seven per cent to 7.5 per cent within the region. Maple Ridge is in line to get an express bus and a B-Line to the new Evergreen SkyTrain line – which is currently being constructed – but Mayor Nicole Read, who along with Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan and West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith voted against going to referendum – questioned if there will be enough money for it after all the large infrastructure projects get the green light. “Given the current challenges within TransLink and the fact

that the mayors are being asked to accept accountability without equal measure of responsibility of oversight, I voted ‘no’ on the referendum,” Read added. “It is bad business acumen to accept accountability without responsibility. I learned that early in Online, all the time...

my career and don’t intend to unlearn it now.” Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker was not at the meeting when the vote was taken, because he was attending a Pitt Meadows business planning meetings. “I never did get to cast a vote,” he said. But he supports the referendum going to the public, as opposed to the “mayors refusing to do so in the face of the provincial government requiring a referendum for increased funding sources,” Becker explained. “That is not to say that I or our council has decided to take a public position, either yes or no,” he stressed.

The question will now be posed to the public, through a mail-in referendum. If passed, an expected $250 million a year will be raised to fund a $7.5-billion expansion of the region’s transportation infrastructure, including a new Pattullo Bridge, light rail in Surrey, and a subway in Vancouver. Read believes that the Lower Mainland needs a “best in the world” type of transit system, adding that good transit costs money. “The sales tax seems the fairest way to collect the funding that we need for transit,” she said.

‘Sparkling’ fundraiser for toddler

An afternoon fundraiser helping a two-year-old boy with serious health issues is taking place Saturday, Jan. 24 at Townhall Public House. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

The band of Good Samaritans known as “Nicolas Nation” is growing. Since the media spotlight recently shone on Nicolas Schwuchow, support has poured in exponentially for the two-yearold Maple Ridge toddler and his family. Nicolas has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1, a terminal and degenerative disease that causes weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles in infants and children. SMA, a disease that affects one in 6,000 people, eventually impacts every muscle in the body, hindering the ability to walk, stand, sit, eat, breathe, and swallow. The mind always remains unaffected and children with SMA are bright, sensitive, and playful in spite of their failing bodies. Moving forward, Nicolas’s support system goes beyond his immediate family that includes Rolf, Petra, and four-year-old “Izzy.” Many friends have stepped in Troy Landreville/TIMES to help create the “A Boy Named Surrounded by his family including dad Rolf, mom Petra, and sister Izzy, Nicolas” Campaign, which raises Nicolas Schwuchow has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1, a terminal much-needed funds to assist the and degenerative disease that causes weakness and wasting of the family with providing Nicolas voluntary muscles in infants and children. During the fundraiser, visitors can order items, with 100 per cent of Rutledge’s commission going to the family. “We hope that people will come on down to the pub and do a little shopping in support of this cause,” Rutledge said. Petra considers Rutledge to be “a very close and dear friend.” “She has always done what she could to support me, and us,” Petra said. “We’re very overwhelmed with the support she is offering through her ‘Sparkle for Nicolas’ fundraiser.” Petra said Janet has “worked tirelessly” to secure a venue and to provide promotional material for the fundraiser. “We really appreciate all the hard work she has done to make this a reality,” Petra said. Hosting “Sparkle for Nicolas” is a way to pay it forward to Petra, who was there for her during one of the darkest times in Rutledge’s life. Her four-year-old son Karter had serious health issues at birth and Petra offered great support for Rutledge during that period. “Petra was one of those friends who offered unwavering support through that difficult time in my life, and seizing the opportunity to raise some money for Nicolas through my business is really the least I can do,” Rutledge said. Rutledge is accepting pre-orders now, at the event, and postevent until Feb. 14. All orders received in this time frame will benefit Nicolas.

odds. Nicolas continues to undergo daily massage and range-ofmotion therapy, water therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic therapy, and osteopathy, and the boy’s lungs continue to be strong. He is able to eat well by mouth, with no issues with swallowing or aspiration, and continues to gain weight and grow well, his parents noted. “He continues to amaze us with his sense of determination, intelligence, charm, wit, and happy disposition,” Petra said. “He lights up any room he is in,” The support the family has received over the past couple of months has been unbelievable, Petra said. “We are overwhelmed with the support from the community and friends, new and old, who have stepped up with well wishes, donations, and words of support,” she added.

TransLink has ‘broken trust’

would be a starting point.” Becker said TransLink governance needs to be a top priority for the new crop of mayors. “As mayors, we deal with the demands and deficiencies in service every day through our residents, and yet the TransLink board is largely appointed by the provincial government and the mayors’ council has very little power,” he said. Read, meanwhile, said TransLink has broken trust with residents. “Instead of making the necessary changes to earn back that trust, the mayors have been asked to offer up their own credibility to sell the plebiscite,” she said. “That’s inauthentic and its being used as a short-term method to infuse TransLink with another round of funding despite deep concerns on the part of taxpayers as to how that money is being managed and allocated.”

Read said, “I’m not opposed to collecting and spending money on transit. I just think we need a better model for governance.” Closer to home, Becker would love to see public transit improvements in his community. Some, he said, are as simple as a “more rational” community shuttle service and a rapid bus to the Evergreen Line. Others are stretch goals like a mid-day return train for the West Coast Express (WCE) or light rail out to the valley. “I can appreciate the need to match service with population density but, to quote Mayor Read from Maple Ridge, TransLink should consider our region as the start of the system and not the tail end,” Becker said. Read’s wishlist mirrored Becker’s. “We need increased shuttles, a B-line to connect us to the Evergreen Line, and increased WCE service,” Read said. “That

Chamber speaks up on transit tax The Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is supporting the “Yes” side, in the upcoming transit referendum, said chamber president Terry Becker. However, an information session is tentatively planned for the beginning of February, to address concerns that both residents and businesses have with the proposed tax, Becker said. “It will be an information session with speakers, not a debate,” she clarified. More information regarding the meet-

As to why the board didn’t consult all its members before making the decision to support the tax increase, Becker explained “we have a policy of making decisions by board resolution,” she said. The policy isn’t specific to the referendum, and governs how the board does business. The local chamber’s decision was in line with the official stance of BC Chamber of Commerce, Becker noted.

What to Do If You Are a Victim of Mail Theft

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows were hit pretty hard over the holiday season with the theft of mail.Thieves pry open the older community mailboxes and steal mail, looking for Christmas cards with money, cheques, or gift cards, but they also look for information that can be used in identity theft. Canada Post is actively working on replacing the older community mailboxes with new strong boxes with extra security, and are working with RCMP to pursue mail thieves and have had some success in catching some of them recently.

Here are some tips, if you are a victim of mail theft: 1. Ensure Canada Post and the RCMP have been notified. 2. Contact Equifax and Transunion Credit bureaus to flag your account to ensure no one tries to open any accounts in your name 3. Monitor your bills to ensure all transactions are yours, and contact the credit card companies in regards to anything suspicious. 4. Prevent theft by picking up your mail on a daily basis.

For more information, visit the credit bureau websites:

www.transunion.ca www.equifax.ca

What can the Community Policing Office do for you? The Community Policing Office is a close and convenient place for residents to: • Report a crime • Obtain a criminal record check • Find safety information • Get advice or talk to a police officer

Pitt Meadows Regional Airport will be showcased in one of television’s newest reality shows taking to the airwaves for the first time Monday. Airshow debuts on Discovery TV next week, showcasing the glamour and the danger that accompanies the world of the airshow circuit and the cowboys of the skies who present this adrenaline-charged entertainment. Using the latest camera technology to take viewers on an unforgettable ride, Airshow is being described as a “perfect mix of eye candy and stomach-churning story,” showcasing a series of personalities driven to follow their dreams in pursuit of one of the most dangerous part-time professions on the planet, said Marcus Paine, one of the pilots profiled in the show who flew in Pitt Meadows last summer. One of the first 12 episodes of series was filmed during the annual North Fraser Airshow held in conjunction with the Pitt Meadows Airport Day last July. In particular, it showcases Paine, who with wing walker Carol Pilon, filmed episode 11 in Pitt Meadows where the duo struggled to perform in the skies above YPK. The weather was threatening to cancel the performance, but the two taxied out to the runway anyway, Paine explained. They had two plans – one show with both wing walker and pilot, and one without the wing walking. They let the weather ultimately decide, said Paine, known by his fellow pilots as the Barnstormer, a rugged Alaskan who has been flying planes for more than 20 years. The show, produced by Vancouver’s Great Pacific TV (creators of Highway Thru Hell), debuts on Discovery on Monday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

Our View

Goal set at nine per cent Cigarettes are legal, with only certain age restrictions. They are also lethal. Put to exactly the purpose they are intended by the manufacturer, they kill about half the people who use them. If we sold cars on the same basis, we could dispense with seat belts, air bags, and host of other expensive safety devices, such as headlights, brake and signal lights, windshield wipers, and what have you, that we have demanded be added over the years. In fact, if we accepted the same 50 per cent lethality rate for cars that we accept for cigarettes, we probably wouldn’t need most of the restrictive legislation that forces us to adhere to speed limits, respect crosswalks, and stop at stop signs. Allowing 50 per cent lethality would give us a lot of leeway that we don’t accept in other products, except maybe alcohol, grease-infused fast foods, or some cutting-edge medical treatments that give hope to people in dire straits – people like those with lung cancer or other tobacco-related illnesses. In B.C., smokers currently constitute about 13 per cent of the population. That’s the lowest rate among provinces throughout Canada – but the Canadian Cancer Society feels it’s not good enough, and wants the provincial government to push the rate down to at most nine per cent. They want tobacco taxes raised from the current $47.80 to $50 per carton (200 cigarettes). They want current indoor smoking bans extended outdoors, to cover beaches, parks, and playgrounds, as well as bar and restaurant patios. They recognize the dangerous influence of e-cigarettes, and want them banned wherever smoking is banned. And they want the B.C. government to step in next year – if the feds don’t this year – to take action against flavoured tobacco products. It’s certainly not too much to ask during National Non-Smoking Week. We ask far more from our cars. – B.G.

TransLink vote missing fairness

Dear Editor, The TransLink referendum doesn’t address the most important principle of taxation, which is fairness. Is it fair that residents of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge pay more taxes to TransLink than do to residents of Vancouver when we the receive a small fraction of the services they receive? Before TransLink asks for more money, it has to institute a fair system of taxation. We currently pay more in taxes because of the fuel tax of $0.17 per litre, as we generally have to drive far more than Vancouver residents. We also pay a bridge toll that they seldom pay.

The only fair tax system would be to eliminate the fuel tax and generate all taxes needed through the property tax system. Each housing unit (including legal and illegal suites) would be assessed a standard amount based on the TransLink service available to them. Vancouver would get the highest assessment, as residents there receive the most service. Residents in east Maple Ridge would get a small assessment, as they receive very little service. No referendum should occur until the question of fairness is addressed – something for our new mayors to work on. Bob Smith, Pitt Meadows

Empty space suitable for art

Dear Editor, I’d like to put an idea forward to any owners of commercial buildings that have been sitting vacant for some time. As an artist that has utilized artist studio spaces in Vancouver, and reaped the benefits exposure to my work through the East Side Culture Crawl, I have been thinking of the lack of any artist studio rental space in Maple Ridge. Perhaps someone with a large building that doesn’t have an interested tenant to fill that space would consider dividing the space into multiple art studios that could be rented out to artists looking to have a collective space to work in and share ideas with other artists in the area. It would help to create community, and create the basis for expanding the studio tour that has started here. Bonnie Dobbin, Maple Ridge

for years are now retired on fixed incomes. They are being property-taxed out of their homes. The paltry few dollars of subsidy is an insult. They have helped to build Maple Ridge, although it certainly could use a lot of improvement. The only thing there seems to be more of is increasing municipal salaries. Also, the obsession with “downtown” must end. Other cities have these little spots that are considered heritage spots that have now grown and spread out. Is the anti-progress contingent not aware that Maple Ridge is a city now? (Overt sarcasm) Cherryl Katnich, Maple Ridge

Harper has brought Canada to crisis point

Dear Editor, Have we truly lost the connection with what is important to our very existence? We are a privileged people in Canada – so far – but that distinction is gradually being stripped from beneath us, slowly so as not to raise alarm bells, and many are unaware of the danger approaching us. We have a government in Canada that has dismantled our constitution and environmental protection laws, bit by bit. As I sat amidst friends at a New Year’s

party, the subject of oil stocks arose. My friends know me as a person who speaks out for environmental protection, and my family supports the growing movement of turning away from the destructive quest for oil in favour of looking towards a sustainable future, which is not only technologically available and waiting, but also full of promise and prosperity – except not for Canadians, because the current Harper government has too much invested in oil production to allow us the opportunities we need and deserve. Amongst friends, I became aware of how much some people are in denial of the realities facing our life on earth. “I’ll stop investing in oil stocks when you stop driving your vehicles,” was thrown at me. It becomes frustrating and tiring to hear this tunnel-visioned opinion. I try to take a day per week off from using my vehicle, but that is not going to stop the tar sands expansion or the fracking of our fragile earth. What will make a difference is people waking up to what we are facing and everyone doing “something” – first of all, by voting for a government that will lead us out of this mess we have all created – then taking real action to follow a sustainable path. We need big steps now, because it has been ignored for too long. We are at a crisis point. Do what you can today. Become aware, become vocal, and vote this year. WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Forget the fact he’s only 16, or that he’s in Grade 11 with another year to go before graduation – Cameron Hicks has emerged as a leader with Maple Ridge Secondary’s wrestling program. With veteran head coach Bill McCrae hobbled as he recovers from hip replacement surgery,

Hicks has become a de facto assistant coach during Ramblers’ training sessions. “Both on and off the mat, he’s been a leader,” McCrae said. “I’ve been off since October so he’s been running the show. He does all the demonstrations; I can’t get on the mat. All the technique, he demonstrates. He has true leadership ability.” Hicks is one of 22 students – all from Grades 8 to 11 – in MRSS’s wrestling program. This year he’s bulked up a bit to compete in the 51-kg weight class, and is aiming to add even more accolades to what has already been a decorated high school grappling career. At the 2014 provincial tournament in Prince George, Hicks defeated Daya Gill of Hope in

the 45-kg gold medal match. The previous year, Hicks took home silver in the 42-kg division at the B.C. championships in Duncan. And as a member of Team BC at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., Hicks won silver, winning four of his five matches. He was defeated by Ontario’s Marco Palmero in the gold medal match. “It was really good, it was really fun with the provincial team,” Hicks said, reflecting on the national Games. “It was probably one of the best trips I’ve ever been on.” Looking to the near future, Hicks’ high school wrestling goals are simple: “Provincial champion, national champion,” he said.

10 MINUTE OIL OF THE

CHANGE

…continued from page A15

This year’s B.C. high school wrestling championships are being held Feb. 26 to 28 in Abbotsford, which happens to be where Hicks’ club team is situated. Recently, as a member of the B.C. provincial club team, Hicks saw his season-long undefeated streak came to an end recently at a dual meet involving Team Japan in Olympia, Wash. “It was a pretty tough match,” Hicks said. He said his Japanese opponent was “a little older, good technique, really strong, stocky build… Japan’s a really strong nation in wrestling.” Once he graduates from MRSS Hicks has aspirations of attending Simon Fraser University and wrestling for the Clan. His former teammate Payten Smith, who went undefeated in her four years at MRSS, is now a first-year university wrestler at SFU. “SFU is always a good choice,” he said. “I know the school, and I know the team well. They are a really good “I like that it’s all team. But any school that on myself, and wants to take me, I’ll go.” “The baton of Payten’s at the same time has been passed on to him,” it’s a team sport, McCrae said. how you can help Hicks’ history at MRSS predates him entering the school your teamates’ in Grade 8. performance.” The year before, his dad Cameron Hicks Jason – himself a former wrestler with Terry Fox Secondary’s program – introduced Hicks to McCrae. “My dad just kind of put me into it,” he said. Hicks said over the past four years, McCrae’s guidance has been instrumental. “Mr. McCrae has pretty much started me wrestling,” Hicks said. “He’s given me opportunities to wrestle with provincial teams and got me going with a club, so everything that I’ve done in wrestling is rooted back to him.” What appealed to Hicks as a wrestling neophyte in Grade 7, just like today, is the challenges the sport offers. “I like that it’s all on myself and at the same time it’s a team sport, how you can help your teammates’ performance,” Hicks said. He said there is still so much to learn and improve upon. “Wrestling is a sport where you are always looking to improve,” Hicks said. “There is always something where, you can get better, you can get stronger, you can get smarter – you’re always improving.” He trains twice a week with his MRSS teammates and another three to four times a week with the Abby Wrestling Club. On occasion he also trains at SFU.

today’sdrive 20 15 Honda CR-V

A17

Your journey starts here.

The Best Gets Better The CR-V still comes equipped with a familiar 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder, but thanks to direct-injection and a higher compression ratio, the torque has been increased by 11 percent to 181 lb-ft (horsepower remains at 185 hp).

BY DAVID CHAO

The Honda CR-V has long been a staple of the compact SUV market because of its great handling, ease of use, and class-leading design. Despite consistently topping sales charts, Honda felt the need to refresh the CR-V only three years after launching its fourth generation.

To aid efficiency, the engine is mated to a new continuously variable transmission. Overall, this set up is said to be 16 percent more efficient than last years motor with its five-speed automatic transmission setup.

Claimed to be the most significant mid-cycle refresh in its history, the 2015 CR-V has been improved in many areas to make it even more competitive with the likes of Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and Nissan Rogue. The CR-V is now available in six trim levels, thanks to the new Touring model that has been added; and all six models feature revised new styling and improved components throughout.

The updated suspension, along with the Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering, contributes to excellent driving behaviour that is truly pleasant to drive around town and on highways. The CR-V’s dynamics are improved further as you move up the trim levels due to wider tires.

Design

The 2015 CR-V has a fresh new look that makes it appear more upscale. Increased amount of chrome, bolder trim design, and larger available wheels reinforce that impression.

Driving the new CR-V feels more peppy thanks to the additional torque and it is also quicker off the line. The horsepower is staying the same but that is perfectly acceptable as this CR-V will still comfortably cruise on the highway, pass other cars when needed and return good fuel economy.

Keeping the same basic architecture, the 2015 CR-V has a more aggressive front grille that is mirrored “conceptually” at the rear. Not wanting to change too much, Honda retained the high taillights and the basic body shape of the vehicle.

Environment

The interior doesn’t feature any surprises, but it does boast some nice new enhancements such as configurable centre console, sliding sun visors and rear console ventilation ducts.

The new interior of the CR-V is modern and functional, while looking more upscale because of the better textured materials. The front seats are supportive and adequately adjustable and the rear seats provide plenty of room for “full-sized” adults.

The highlight of the new package is HondaLink, which allows a smart phone to be connected to the infotainment system (such as through the HDMI cable). Also, a new suite of Honda Sense safety and driver assistance features that are normally only available on higher-end cars are part of the option list.

Traditionally, the CR-V offers good outward visibility and the new model keeps that advantage. The large windows and smartly placed pillars allow for an unobstructed view, making it safer and easier to park. Along with upgrades to the trim and materials, there is a new central display. Standard on EX and above trim models, the seven-inch touchscreen functions very much like a smart phone or tablet by allowing you to select functions simply by touching the screen.

Though this change isn’t visible, the rear suspension has been redesigned to maximize rear seat room and cargo capacity.

Performance

Changes made to the 2015 CR-V were not just cosmetic in nature - Honda made some notable improvements in the engine compartment as well.

As mentioned previously, the most interesting feature is HondaLink. Connecting a smart phone opens up features like Aha radio and utilizes the phones navigation app. This means that for the cost of a cable, you can have many of the same features found on the highest trim CR-V on the lower models.

Honda rebranded its engine technology as Earth Dreams Technology. The new engine is more efficient and has more torque for better drivability all around.

First of it’s kind, UNLIMITED kilometre warranty

All CR-V’s come with a full-colour multiinformation display (that is situated forward and therefore not touchoriented). The info provided can be customized using controls on the steering wheel. I did find this “dual” setup a bit overwhelming to use.

As before, the CR-V has the versatility to accommodate a wide range of cargo. The low floor is aided by the available power tailgate to make loading and unloading easy. The easy fold-down 60/40 split rear seatbacks fold nearly flat and provide even more cargo space if needed.

Features

Ranging in price from $25,990 to $35,790, the CR-V is available in six different trim levels. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, heated front seats, multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, and heated exterior mirrors. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include keyless entry with pushbutton start, leather seating surfaces and steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, front wiper de-icer, LED daytime running lights, blind spot monitoring, auto-dimming rearview mirror, rainsensing wipers, and a moonroof. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for the front-wheel drive LX are 8.6 city, 6.9 highway and 7.8 combined. All other models, which are all-wheel drive, return 9.1 city, 7.2 highway and 8.3 combined.

Thumbs Up

The peppy engine is also more efficient and torquey. The HondaLink allows you to have many features off your smart phone.

Thumbs Down

There is very little to complain about the CR-V but its overall design is somewhat boring and it isn’t the sportiest compact SUV on the market.

The Bottom Line

The 2015 Honda CR-V fulfils every need and represents outstanding value and features for the money.
