Studio brings action to City core

A film studio setting up shop in downtown Maple Ridge speaks to the increased interest from producers. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

In the not-too-distant future, the former Haney Bingoplex will morph into a police station, courtroom, and hospital, depending on the week. The spacious, 23,000-squarefoot building, at 11887 224th St., sits empty right now. But, soon that won’t be the case. Ridge Studios has taken up occupancy, and the ample amount of room gives the studio boundless flexibility. John Wittmayer, CEO and general manager of The Ridge Studios, said potential sets are being designed for the space. “We’re building sets that are difficult to find in the Lower Mainland, and that is primarily police stations, jails, and courtrooms,” said Wittmayer, who has worked in the motion picture industry as a location and unit manager since 1986. “The sets will always be evolving. One day it’ll be a police station, a week later it’ll be a lawyer’s office, and that’s the beauty of it.”

Morphing for movies

Troy Landreville/TIMES

The Ridge Studios general manager and CEO John Wittmayer stood outside the studio’s new home, which was formerly the Haney Bingoplex on the west side of 224th Street across Target and Haney Place Mall. Its location in the heart of downtown Maple Ridge, across from Haney Place Mall and Memorial Peace Park, made it ideal for Wittmayer’s vision. “It’s designed for public assembly,” Wittmayer said. “It can hold up to 700 people at any given time. It seemed to me to be a perfect venue for a movie studio.”

A splash of paint and lots of ingenuity makes each of these sets virtually interchangeable. “Every time you turn around, if you were to think in terms of a Wittmayer worked closely movie set… it’s all movie magic,” with Marg Johnson, film proWittmayer said. “Eventually all duction liaison with the City of of this will have sets in it as we Maple Ridge, along with former go along, and usually the movie manager of strategic economic company has their own idea of initiatives Sandy Blue, as well as ‘This is what we require for our business retention and expansion script’ in order to replicate what officer Bruce Livingstone to make the script calls for and the vision the move possible. that the director has.” “They recognized that there is Wittmayer is focusing on a spin-off benefit designing sets to Maple Ridge,” that are difficult “The sets will always Wittmayer said. “It to secure these be evolving.” creates the infradays. A black curtain hung outside Bella Vita at 22471 Lougheed Hwy. on Monday as crews filmed inside the restaurant. These 48 permits equate to approximately 96 filming days in Pitt Meadows. Trends over the last few years have shown a steady increase in filming activity in Pitt Meadows and the City is planning 2015 activity on this trend, with a mix of filming commercials, movies and TV in the community on a consistent basis.

Drop in dollar helps

Maple Ridge, meanwhile, is fully supportive of the studio planting stakes downtown. “They have our full support,” Johnson said. It’s already shaping up to be a busy year for Johnson. She’s already working with six productions, between scouting and processing permits. “For this time of the year, that’s a fair amount,” she said. “Normally business picks up in early March but I find it’s happening right now.”

Wittmayer said a film company will also help improve the aesthetics of the downtown core. He also believes that once location scouts realize the building is available, and that it’s “film friendly,” they’ll be excited because they won’t have to scour the country to find locations. And with the Canadian loonie recently dipping below 80 cents US for the first time in six years, it can mean big business for the local film industry. “Every time the dollar dips, it’s very attractive to producers, particularly producers from the states, and even internationally, to take advantage of that,” Wittmayer said. “Every time you adjust the dollar by a few points, it often equates into tens of thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. So it’s a significant bonus for producers to bring their projects here when the dollar dips.”

Tree bylaw rushed through in special meeting

A permit is now required for tree cutting in both rural and urban areas of Maple Ridge. by Cole Wagner editorial@mrtimes.com

Call before cutting. That could be the best way to describe the City of Maple Ridge’s new policy on trees, after changes to the tree protection bylaw were rushed through City council at a special meeting on Wednesday afternoon. The new interim amendments expand the scope of trees that would require a permit before being chopped down, explained Gail Szostek, environmental technician with the City. Most notably, the blanket exemption for tree cutting permits on rural property has been revoked. “We can’t stop someone from cutting down a tree, but we can make them get a permit,” Szostek said. The tweaks to the bylaw were made in anticipation

A man and woman are in custody after allegedly stealing trucks in Maple Ridge.

An auto theft spree in Maple Ridge involving a pair of suspects was thwarted by Maple Ridge Mounties on Monday. Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit were busy arresting a man and a woman after the two were found allegedly in possession of two stolen trucks and trying to steal a third. “A team of investigators followed some leads and located two stolen Ford F350 pickup trucks in east Maple Ridge,” Ridge Meadows Cpl. Alanna Dunlop explained. The vehicles were followed at a safe distance to a remote location where one of the trucks was wilfully damaged. The suspects then drove off, and were again followed by police. Cpl. Alanna Dunlop When the suspects stopped and Ridge Meadows RCMP were attempting to steal a third pickup, police moved in and made the arrest. Dunlop said a “top priority for investigators was keeping this incident as safe as possible by not allowing the suspects any opportunity to cause a hazardous pursuit.” Robert Mack, 34, and 29-year-old Sarah Winters appeared in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court on Tuesday, and are charged with two counts of possession of stolen property, one count of attempted theft of a vehicle, and other charges related to damaging one of the trucks. Both were remanded in custody.

Our View

Developing rules change Local councillors and municipal staff are likely taking a close look at last week’s B.C. Supreme Court decision in which Justice Mark McEwan overturned the rezoning bylaw and development permits for a land swap and 36-storey tower in Vancouver after a group of Yaletown residents took the city to court. The citizens argued Vancouver city hall had not justified the deal or properly dealt with their concerns. The development, according to critics, was “railroaded” through city hall. Justice McEwan wrote, “A public hearing is not just an occasion for the public to blow off steam. The procedure the city adopted was unfairly restrictive, in presenting the public with a package of technical material that was opaque… in limiting comment on the integrated nature of the project, and in failing to provide an intelligible financial justification for it.” Residents have taken cities to court before, and almost always, the courts have favoured local governments – providing public hearings have been held and discussion was not limited. But this judgment appears to go a huge step beyond those requirements, saying that there is a responsibility on the city’s part to make the process not just open, but also to ensure that the information provided is understandable and clear. It’s not enough to provide reams of studies or technical information, local governments must help their residents understand the proposals being brought forward and what they entail. Local governments are under a lot of pressure to gain amenities from developers nowadays. Whether it’s green space or affordable housing, the bargaining for extras in exchange for approvals and design changes has become just part of doing business in municipalities. Trying to balance that with residents’ concerns is often tricky. It just got a lot more tricky with this judge’s ruling. – Glacier Media

Demand government corrects past errors

Dear Editor, I guess I need to make my point clearer for Cherryl Katnich [Don’t pass buck to politicians, Jan. 27 Letters, TIMES]. Not driving my vehicle one day per week will not matter one bit in the grand scheme of things when it comes to drastic reduction of our carbon footprint on this world. Even if everyone in North America did the same, it would not be enough.

We are all in this together and we are, yes, all responsible for our predicament. For more than two decades, scientists and concerned citizens have raised the alarm, urging governments to act on the prevention of climate change. Our governments are supposed to act in the interest of the people and protect our well-being. Ignoring the looming climate crisis threat is also ignoring the very

fundamental reasons our “leaders” were elected. Big business and government, all with economic interests tied to the dirty energy market, are creating roadblocks to progress on this issue. Our governments have locked us into dozens of agreements that make important parts of a meaningful climate change response illegal. Government has stifled opportunities for solar, wind, or electric power. So yes, the government is responsible for leading our way out of this. There is no passing the buck here. I am demanding that our elected officials get off their thumbs and do something significant to help turn the tide from looming disaster to a light at the end of the tunnel. Dana Lacroix, Maple Ridge

Slick Conservatives advertising for votes

Dear Editor, Another advertising letter from local MP Randy Kamp landed on our doorstep. They spend $100 million annually on advertising! This time it posed the complicated question, whether “regular exercise is important” or

whether “it does not concern me.” The second question is whether the Conservatives are on the “right track to provide tax relief for families.” This tax relief comes in the form of the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit. They are “doubling the credit amount to $1,000.” Does that mean you will get $1,000? NO! It means that if you spend $1,000 for sports equipment or sports fees, you will get a 15 per cent tax break, i.e. $150. A bit deceptive, don’t you think? While nobody says no to even the smallest tax break, it once again is a tax, like income splitting, that disproportionately benefits people in the highest tax brackets. Who can afford to spend $1,000 for sports equipment? A single mom on minimal income will neither benefit nor can probably afford to pay $1,000 fees for sports activities. And what about kids who like the arts? Or kids who need tutoring? Why should they not get financial breaks? There is only so much of our tax money to go around; we have to give careful consideration how it is best spent to help those who really need it. So far, the Conservatives have managed to increase our national debt by $176.4 billion, reduced corporate tax by $60 billion, slashed $36 billion from health care, and having put all economic eggs in the tar sands basket, we don’t know yet what other deficits and job losses are looming. Not very fiscally prudent, but a slick way to garner votes. Maria Raynolds, Maple Ridge Letters on this page have been edited for space. Milestone

Centenarian celebrated

Ray Swain, who has lived in Maple Ridge for five-plus decades, turned 100 this past Boxing Day.

Ray Swain celebrated his 100th birthday with a giant piece of birthday cake, adorned with a single, lit candle on top of it.

by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Ray Swain has packed a lot of living into his 100 years. Swain, was born in Central Butte, Sask., on Dec. 26, 1914, officially became a centenarian this past Boxing Day. A veteran who served in Europe during the Second World War, Swain has lived in Maple Ridge for more than half of his life. Swain built a number of new homes in Maple Ridge and lived in the same house for the past 52 years, his friend and longtime neighbour Ron Antalek said. He lived alone in that house until just recently, when he moved to a care home. His wife Joan died from cancer many years ago, Antalek shared, adding that Swain has been a member of Maple Ridge Curling Club since 1956,

was a member of the Pitt Meadows Golf Course, once owned the Haney Hotel many years ago, and owned the Fraser River Marina on Wharf Street with 46 boat berths. Around the time he was born, Swain’s family owned a hardware store on Central Butte’s main street. “Ray has a wonderful daughter named Tracy who loves Ray very much and lives in Alberta,” said Antalek who noted that his friend’s “favorite restaurant is A&W,” and that his favourite place to visit is the Maple Ridge Seniors Centre.

At the seniors centre, Swain enjoys playing pool and snooker. In celebration of his 100th birthday, Swain received congratulatory birthday letters from a number of dignitaries including Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, B.C. Premier Christy Clark, Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge–Mission MP Randy Kamp, Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing and Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton, Canada’s Governor General David Johnston, and Queen Elizabeth II. “Everybody loves Ray,” Antalek said

Pump house progresses Despite a supplier delay, a water utility project is still forecast to be finished on time. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

Construction is “coming along well” and the pumphouse project being built in Pitt Meadows to meet the growing demands of the region both north and south of the Fraser River is more than 80 per cent complete, according

to Steven Lewis, a senior engineer with Metro Vancouver Water Services. “We did have the issue of a delay with the switchgear equipment,” Lewis noted. “Our original supplier went into receivership and we’ve arranged another contractor.” However, the delay means the switchgear equipment won’t be on site “until the end of March.” All the heating and ventilating equipment is being installed, and “all the piping and pumps are going in,” Lewis elaborat-

ed, adding that if it wasn’t for the switchgear, there would be no issues. “We can’t really power up all the equipment until that’s all in and wired up, so it does hold some stuff up,” Lewis said. However, despite the delays, Lewis said the contractor is still showing a targeted completion of the project for June 2015, which was the original goal. “There’s a lot of commissioning work involved but we’re confident that we can get that completed,” Lewis added.

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,

Happy Family Day!

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

today’sdrive 20 15 Acura TLX BY DAVID CHAO

A17

Your journey starts here.

Two Become One

Seeking to move more upmarket and streamline its lineup, Acura replaced and combined two established models, the TL and TLX, into one model that is supposed to represent the “best of both worlds.” Designed using the theme of ‘Red Carpet Athlete,’ the new TLX intends to deliver a blend of sports-sedan performance with premium refinement. The TLX introduces two new engines, two new transmissions and comes standard with high-tech features like LED headlights. As a result, the TLX competes with premium stalwarts such as the Audi A4, Lexus IS and Infiniti Q50. The 2015 TLX is all-new, though there is obviously some sharing of internal components with both its predecessors as well as with other Acura’s. Sharing the same wheelbase as the larger TL, the TLX is closer in length to the more compact TSX. The TLX is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Design

The styling of the TLX is modern and distinctive, but it’s not overbearing. The most distinguishing feature is its chrome grille flanked by the LED headlights. Short front and rear overhangs hint at the TLX’s sporting potential. The profile lines give the cabin a teardrop appearance and reinforce both its athletic pretentions and its refinement. Inside, the TLX is luxurious but not over-the-top. It is one of the most comfortable in this segment and is filled with latest high-tech features.

The top-of-the-line TLX models are equipped with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. This offers the safety of added traction in bad weather and improved performance with sharper turn-in at the limit. The new V6 uses Variable Cylinder Management, which is capable of deactivating three cylinders. This, partnered with the start-stop function on the TLX SH-AWD, further improves its fuel economy.

TLX models with the 3.5-litre V6 utilize Acura’s advanced new Electric Gear Selector, which has a push-button array instead of a traditional lever. Incorporated in this setup is an electronic parking brake with Automatic Brake Hold. This retains brake pressure when the vehicle is stopped, making driving in heavy traffic or on steep hills easier. Although the new gear selector is futuristic looking in design, I found it to be a bit awkward even after getting use to it. The steering feel – in all models – has a good communicative feedback but the steering is a tad light and artificial in feel.

The TLX is available in three models, a four-cylinder with FWD, six-cylinder with FWD, and a six with AWD. Two packages, TECH and ELITE, are available to choose from.

Environment

Performance

The base engine is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder producing 206 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque, thanks to direct injection. This engine is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. This is the industry’s first such gearbox with a torque converter and provides good performance and fuel economy while making smooth, quick shifts.

The TLX offers many advanced tech features including AcuraLink, Acura’s cloud-based connected car system. All models are equipped with Siri Eyes Free technology that pairs compatible iPhones to use familiar voice commands. The only challenge is that the dash is quite busy with many features and buttons, and therefore it’s not easy to figure out at first glance how to manage all of the items.

All V6 models come matched to a nine-speed transmission with paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel.

Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System is standard on all TLX models - this feature allows drivers to customize their driving experience with four selectable modes – ECON, Normal, Sport and Sport+. Depending on the setting, steering effort, throttle response, shift timing, HVAC, and logic for the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems can all be altered. Sport is aggressive, yet still usable for everyday driving, and the TLX is the first Acura with a Sport+ setting.

The all-new TLX retains the 2775 mm wheelbase as the outgoing TL. Length, however, is 94 mm shorter at 4832 mm overall. Yet, the TLX is able to offer the same interior volume and interesting enough, the car doesn’t “look shorter.”

Four-cylinder models feel light and nimble. The fourwheel steering system, P-AWS, is standard on all frontwheel drive models and gives the TLX a spirited nature.

Moving up to the six-cylinder models brings a quieter, more refined feel all around. The 3.5-litre directinjected V6 produces 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque.

The cabin of the TLX is modern and functional. Featuring soft-touch materials, wood and aluminum accents it also gives an upscale feel. Seating is comfortable in both the front and rear. The dash has a symmetrical layout and is dominated by the stacked screens. The eight-inch info screen is positioned high for quick visibility, and the seven-inch touchscreen controls most features and is located lower for easy reach. Separate switches are for the climate control and a large knob controls the sound system and optional navigation.

The TLX’s cargo carrying ability was improved through a new trunk design with a wider, deeper opening, a lower liftover height, a fully flat cargo floor, and two optional under floor storage compartments. The rear seat backs fold 60/40 to accommodate long items.

Features

Ranging in price from $34,990 to $47,490, the TLX is available with several trim packages. Standard equipment includes heated seats, dual zone automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, a moonroof, and a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, remote start, navigation system with voice recognition, lane keeping assist system, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, collision mitigation braking system, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for the 2.4-litre I4 are 9.6 city and 6.6 highway. The 3.5-litre V6 FWD returns 11.2 city and 6.9 highway, and the SH-AWD sees 11.2 city and 7.5 highway.

Thumbs Up

The technologically advanced TLX allows it to offer good performance and fuel economy. The dual-clutch eight-speed automatic, P-AWS and SH-AWD are standout features.

Thumbs Down

The TLX’s best features are below the surface, but that surface isn’t the most exciting. The overall steering feel is also numb and not communicative.

The Bottom Line

The 2015 Acura TLX defines smart luxury and provides a strong value quotient.

He may have been a bit “skeptical” at first, but for Kris McMurray – the Westview Wildcats junior boys basketball coach – this season’s results speak for themselves. “It’s been great,” he said. McMurray is enjoying his second year as a coach at Westview, with a familiar group under his watch. “This is the same group of boys I coached last year at the Grade 8 level, and we went on to win the league,” he recalled. “This year with tryouts, we didn’t have any Grade 10s so at first we were a little skeptical being an all Grade 9 team playing junior basketball,” he explained. McMurray and his co-coach Victor Hayter decided to for with it anyway, with the frame of mind that if nothing else, it would make for a good “development” season. But things have “turned out really well.” So well in fact, that the team is sitting with a 6-2 record after suffering their second loss on Tuesday night to Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary. “SRT beat us in a tough battle,” McMurray said. “Not our finest hour, but we’re looking forward to (MRSS) beat us early on this season in our only loss, so if we bouncing back.” win that game it secures us potWhile it is traditionally someentially as league champions; it what rare to have a junior team all depends on results from the solely comprised of all Grade 9 (upcoming) Pitt players, it seems (Secondary) and to be a trend this “We’ve got a smart, Ridge (MRSS) year, McMurray said, as junior committed, and hard- game. While McMurray – who is a Westview graduate himself (class of 2009) – noted that the basketball program at Westview “kind of ebbs and flows” he said there is huge school support for his boys and the program this season and everyone is looking forward to seeing what the group can accomplish in the next few years. “The school is realizing that when you have decent coaching and a solid good group of boys, there is the potential for a school with a small program like Westview’s to have some success,” he added.
