Neighbours call for safety fixes Residents insist the City must take action to improve the Jackson Road and 104th Avenue intersection in wake of another serious crash. Story and photo by Ronda Payne

editorial@mrtimes.com

An intersection that one neighbour dubbed a “death star” was the scene of a major crash earlier this week. Three people were involved in a two-car accident at about 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Jackson Road and 104th Avenue in Albion. To those in the neighbourhood, this intersection is wellknown for similar accidents. Comments were made to The TIMES from those in the crowd around the crash about the dangerous nature of the intersection and the need for the City of Maple Ridge to do something about it. “We call it the death star. It’s death point and the City needs to do something,” said neighbour Kenza Addouche, who called 911 after the accident. “This is really a natural thing [to have happen] here. We’ve been calling the City many times and nothing’s been done.” Richard Wicki, who was on site at the accident moments after it happened, explained it was his wife and daughter in the Chrysler Aspen that had been travelling south on Jackson Road when it collided with a Honda Accord eastbound on 104th Avenue, crossing Jackson. “She [Wicki’s wife] said, ‘he drove right through the stop sign’, and she plowed into him,” Wicki offered. “She noticed that he wasn’t stopping. I came here a few minutes after it happened. I live like 30 seconds down [the road].” Paramedic reported that none of the injuries appeared to be life threatening for the three people involved. An air ambulance was originally dispatched, but was called off when the paramedics were able to assess the situation. With the intersection closed in all directions, firefighters worked to free the driver from the Accord using the jaws of life. It is believed he too was later taken to hospital.

The driver of a black Honda Accord was removed from his vehicle after an accident at Jackson Road and 104th Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

Taking a stand against bullying

Kanaka Creek Elementary was one of several schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows that participated in anti-bullying initiatives during the Pink Shirt Day, held nationally on Wednesday. Showing support for the cause was Grade 7 Jin Mah (foreground) and his schoolmates. Kanaka Creek hosted several class activities throughout the day including a fundraiser for Free The Children organized by the school’s Me to We group, as well as a bake sale at recess and lunch. Join ‘club’ by buying solar panels

Investing in solar power is an environmentally sound move, advocates say. by Troy Landreville

A solar panel buyers club has formed in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows – and it’s all in the name of lightening the overall carbon footprint on the planet. The addition of the two newcomers to council explained a $10,000 increase in spending among council members from 2011 to 2014. The spending wound up paying off for Duncan and Shymkiw, who would go on to be elected to council. While Shymkiw primarily funded himself to the tune of $15,000, he also accepted $500 in contributions from two businesses: Meadowbrook Developments and Thermacoustic Industries

Duncan noted that there is “absolutely” a financial barrier to newcomers being elected to council. “In 2011, I was fresh out of high school, I had to work all summer to save the money to run,” she said. While her 2011 run didn’t earn her a council spot, Duncan said the impression she made as an

Good books bind Whonnock neighbourhood

One Book Whonnock is underway, with a humour filled novel about political interests, and plans for events to bring the topic home.

you didn’t know?’ and the answer is always yes,” noted Davidson of the annual gathering. “It’s [the One Book Whonnock program] not just to talk about it [the current book] at the gathering, but to talk about it over the fence or whatever happens and I’ve seen that happening more now that we’re in the fourth year,” she added. Past books have represented a great range of genres from cozy mystery to an account loosely based on life in Whonnock that caused a stir when originally published. The only criteria is that the book have something to do with the community. “We don’t want to get caught in any particular genre of literature,” Davidson said of chosen books. “It’s in some way connected [to the community]. That’s our goal. It [the connection] comes in different ways, whether it’s the topic, the author, whatever.” Those interested in participating in One Book Whonnock can register through the website at www.whonnock.ca (click One Book Whonnock under quick links on the left) or contact Davidson at 604-462-7341. To be part of the gathering event, pre-registration is mandatory and is open to those who have read the book and live, work, or go to school or church in Ruskin, Thornhill, or Whonnock.

The old rule about what not to discuss in polite mixed company is being broken in Whonnock. No sex, no religion, no politics they say. But with Terry Fallis’ book The Best Laid Plans as the latest good read for One Book Whonnock, there is likely to be a conversation or two around politics. There will also be a gathering and events to tie it all together according to one of the organizers, Jean Davidson. “It’s a chance to have a good read and meet the neighbours,” Davidson said of One Book Whonnock. The program began about four years ago in an effort to share with neighbours, enjoy literature, and create more connections around something new. The organizing team includes Moh Thauberger, Julie Young, Mary Daunais, Gloria Stanley, and Davidson. Originally, the community was asked annually if they wanted another book, but with more

all voters and citizens and need to take responsibility for the person amongst us who is sent to Ottawa and Victoria to protect our interests and promote good policies,” she said. “It’s [the choice of a politically themed book] a lead up to the federal election. We considered various books, but with the federal election looming it seemed like a good topic to be discussing. As the winner of the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour, Fallis’ book is described as an engaging read that organizers hope will inspire “a lively discussion.”

“Each year there has been an activity related to the book which is another opportunity for neighbours to connect,” Davidson said. While this activity is yet to be planned, the more imminent gettogether is the gathering scheduled for March 26 at Whonnock Lake Centre. To further tie the political aspect of the book into the event, Canadiana and political party colours will be used in decorations. “It’s to bring people together to meet their neighbours, and we always ask at the end of the evening ‘Did you meet people

The upcoming Maple Ridge Lantern Festival is set to light up Haney Place Mall on Friday evening. With any luck, the seventh annual celebration will also light up some smiles on children and parents alike. Set to begin at 4 p.m., with the lantern parade at 7:30 p.m., the Lantern Festival is an opportunity to celebrate Maple Ridge’s diversity, and community spirit, said Ineke Boekhorst of the Downtown Business Improvement Association, which sponsors the event. Festival organizers invited a number of multicultural acts to grace the stage in Haney Place Mall . “We are going to have Polynesian dancers, Hawaiian dancers, and

The theme of the poems, as one might guess, is light. All of the poetry submitted to the contest has been collected into a booklet, and will be available for purchase at the festival, or at Black Bond Books after Feb. 27. For more information, email rg674806@telus.net.

Homemade rockets more about the science, but still a blast to launch Pupil-built rockets propelled into the sky at Maple Ridge Secondary – before plummeting back to Earth. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

At Maple Ridge Secondary, setting off air-and-water-propelled bottle rockets on the school’s main field is a tradition – one that continued Feb. 18 and 19. As students watched from a safe distance, physics teacher David Jamieson launched the rockets, designed and built by Grade 11

Jamieson said the exercise is about kinematics – the description of motion, dynamics – the understanding of forces, why things move, and energy. “And it’s a lot of fun,” said Jamieson who added, “Engineering of the parachute and deployment of the parachute is very difficult.” A rocket built by Grade 11 Shayna Grose dropped jaws after it hung in the air for about 40 seconds. A video was posted on the school’s Facebook page, showing the launching. It can be found at /www.facebook.com/ MapleRidgeSS.

Maple Ridge Secondary physics teacher David Jamieson launched his students’ homemade bottle rockets in the school’s main athletic field last week.

A faulty furnace, an electrical room blow out, and a motorcycle that smashed into a pumphouse – what do these things have in common? The answer: Maple Ridge firefighters. They were dispatched to help with all three potentially dangerous incidents in a 24-hour period earlier this week. A homeowner in the 11600 block of 243rd Street smelled smoke and thought something was wrong with his furnace. He called in a contractor to take a look. There was a fire burning in the floor joist below the furnace that the contractor was able to extinguish with a garden hose before fire crews arrived just after 3 p.m., said deputy fire chief Howard Exner. The contractor did, however, suffer some smoke inhalation and was being checked out medically. In the meantime, fire crews were also called out overnight to a Whonnock crash. A motorcyclist smashed into a residential pumphouse in the 11600 block of 272nd Street about 11:30 Monday night. Exner clarified it was not the municipal

Whonnock pumphouse, but a building on a private property. The rider was travelling north on 272nd Street when he left the road and crashed into the structure, Exner explained. An air ambulance was brought in to Whonnock Elementary to transport the motorcyclist to hospital. Other details from police are not yet available. Fire crews were called out again early Tuesday morning to the 23600 block of River Road after the power went out in a warehouse building. Just after 8 a.m., staff working close to the communal electrical room for the complex heard a large boom followed immediately by the loss of power, Exner said. “They go to investigate the noise, and see smoke coming out of a pipe from that room,” he explained. The staff were able to quash a blaze in the electrical room with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived. But members of the fire department ensured the fire would not flare up again, and called hydro to cut power to the building. Exner said the complex will be without power for some time. An electrician was called in to handle the “extensive repairs.”

Our View

Community commitment continuing The TIMES is approaching the next step in its evolution in serving our communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. We announced two months ago that the TIMES was among a number of newspapers in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island that were being sold by Glacier Media to Black Press, while other newspapers in other parts of the Lower Mainland, currently owned by Black, are shifting to Glacier ownership. The actual transition of ownership between the two media companies will occur some time in the next month. As we approach the sale date, we’d like to assure our readers that they won’t be losing their favourite community newspaper just because we’ll have new owners. In fact, ownership of the TIMES has changed hands several times since our first edition hit the streets of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on May 1 in 1985 – just a few weeks shy of 30 years ago. The prospective new owners have given assurance they have no intention of closing the doors of the TIMES offices upon completion of sale. They have made it clear that they want us to continue in independent competition to other local news and advertising sources. They want to maintain a competitive atmosphere to ensure that both our readers and our advertisers get only the best service that we can provide. And with that, the staff and management of the TIMES proudly pledge to continue our long standing commitment to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, to continue to offer our readers the high level of communication services that they have come to expect from us. – B.G.

Lords of the manor need to pay Dear Editor, Let’s envision a Downton Abbey episode in which the lord of the manor, in financial stress, decides to deduct high rent from all his faithful servants’ pay. They find it cheaper to live in the nearby village and leave the manor to en mass, deciding to commute the every day instead. Then the bridge over the creek breaks down and his servants have a longer commute to get to the manor, but never fear, the lord replaces the bridge but now deducts more from their pay cheque to pay for the bridge. In essence, this is the description of Vancouver. The necessary labour force can’t afford housing within the city and they are forced to live up the valley. The mayors have decided to add another tax on their existing burden of taxes so that the labourers can continue to serve Vancouver. What would happen if everyone beyond

the Fraser River just found work near their communities? Vancouver’s place would diminish, real estate would collapse, and we would have to rename the region Metro Surrey. Some people and organizations have benefited way more financially through SkyTrain and infrastructure than the common commuter. Some don’t even live here, but across the Pacific or in other areas of the world. The mayors have the option to tax them, but perhaps they feel their country club friends should be exempt. We see as well that the City of Vancouver has such an excess of funds that the mayor and council need to enjoy a hefty boost in pay. There are others who deserve to pay more for the privilege of living in the manor, just not its lowly servants. Nick Sanger, Maple Ridge

Fix the problem you created, or get swept out

Dear Editor, Following is an open letter to MLAs Doug Bing and Marc Dalton: I see two glaring problems with TransLink: its governing body is not accountable to the people of B.C., and it is profligate and overpriced. The recent ham-handed attempt by the board to address apparent lack of public confidence in TransLink was to ask Ian Jarvis to step down. This “solution” exemplifies both problems. Lack of public support can only be “apparent” because we don’t get to vote for board members, not even indirectly. Ian Jarvis was given a golden parachute, such that TransLink is wasting yet another sum of money. Clearly, it was a public relations fiasco. TransLink executives and (presumably) board members are massively overpaid compared to their counterparts elsewhere in Canada and the U.S.

It is the governing Liberal Party that created this mess. On June 25, 2014, the province officially passed into legislation a new governance structure for TransLink, effectively dissolving the office of the Regional Transportation Commissioner. An archive of the Commissioner’s decisions and orders in 2013 and 2014 is available in the Commissioner’s Archive Document Library. This is a mess. You created it. Now it is time for you to fix it. We voters expect to see you actively trying to fix this problem. Press the premier and other senior ministers in public. Show everyone that you understand the Liberals created the mess and the Liberals will clean it up. If you try to fix the problem, you will be a hero. If you do nothing, we will sweep you out with the rest of the rascals. Daniel Chavitage, Maple Ridge

Religion

Old values are not necessarily still the best

Dear Editor, I think Cherryl Katnich [Christ forever, Feb. 19 Letters, TIMES] is missing the point that Ahmed Yousef [Radicals born of fundamentalism, Feb. 10 Letters, TIMES] was trying to make. Regardless of the particular god, prophet, or religious text you follow, you are ultim-

What you’re telling us on Facebook

Last Saturday, a Maple Ridge man was struck – outside the crosswalk – near 216th Street on Lougheed Highway. He was taken to hospital and expected to recover. In the meantime, readers reacted: “Why people try to cross Lougheed Hwy without using a crosswalk blows my mind. So dangerous! No excuse not to stop though.” – Bryan Ewart “I think we saw the driver leave!? I didn’t realize that the driver had left?” – Shawna Grimason “Hope they find the person or they turn themselves in.” – Kim Plumridge “Believes Darwin’s theory right, survival of the fittest, just plain horrible. But why cross there?” – Mikey Keogh

ately responsible for your beliefs. In the end, you must pass those beliefs through your own moral gauge to see if you can support them or not. Saying it is in the bible or some priest or imam told you it was true will not do. I think Ahmed was saying you must judge all of this yourself in the present, and if necessary, change old values you were taught. After all, religious texts, including the bible, were interpretations made at the time of their writing by mortals. Most Christians do, indeed, follow religions, believing in one version of the bible or another, usually giving allegiance to a church that matches their moral system. Paul Gregory, Maple Ridge

Education

Government in hiding

Dear Editor, I find it very interesting to have read that Education Minister Peter Fassbender says the province is once again cutting back on education funding only to ask school districts to work efficiently. Why doesn’t the Liberal government go after TransLink, BC Ferries, and ICBC for the same thing, instead of hiding behind organizations they created to avoid public questions? WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Great styling, inside and out Environment:

BY BRENDAN McALEER

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com • Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer

Some time ago, I found myself behind the wheel of a rollcage-equipped Skip Barber MX-5, entering into the semi-legendary Corkscrew turn at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California. A real rollercoaster of a corner, it’s far less tricky than the turn that follows it, an off-camber sweeper with nothin’ but dirt waiting to catch you and ruin your day. But I’m no racecar driver – as this was a learning lap, there was a quicker car out in front, one with a veteran instructor at the wheel managing to keep the proper line, call out instructions on the radio, and keep one eye on his rearview in case we missed the apex by a country mile and started drifting towards the gravel. So what’d he have to keep a safe margin out in front? A Corvette? Boss Mustang? Nissan GT-R? Porsche product? Track-prepped RX-7? Well no, actually; the gent in question had a small, fuel-efficient compact car with a four-cylinder engine. In fact, he had one of these: A Mazda3. Permit me to tell you why that wasn’t a crazy choice.

Design:

When the Mazda3 first replaced the venerable old Protege, everybody had to have one. Specifically, everybody wanted to have a Sport GT hatchback, with the zippy little 2.3L engine, preferably in dark grey. I distinctly remember parking between four such vehicles in a row along Broadway, and then seeing two more pass by. The succeeding generation wasn’t quite as pretty, but this new one – hoo-boy, she’s a looker. The design language is called Kodo, or soul of motion, and it’s both very Japanese and somehow reminiscent of something Alfa-Romeo might build. However, if you go for the basic model, the size of the alloys don’t quite balance out all that swoopy sheetmetal. Here in the GT version, however, there’s 18” alloys to really fill out the wheel wells. It’s a great-looking car, marred only by our mandatory BC license plates.

carves through it. The electric power assisted steering isn’t as good as Mazda’s previous hydraulic efforts, but it’s still most definitely a driver’s car.

Inside, the Mazda3 has grown up somewhat, and is starting to overlap the lower-end versions of the premium brands. Step out of the interior of a Mercedes-Benz CLA into the all-black cockpit of the ‘3, and it’s actually very similar.

The 2.5L engine has enough grunt to dispatch most traffic with ease, but it’s the Mazda3’s chassis that really thrills. Mazda could easily bolt-in the turbocharged engine out of the old Mazdaspeed3 and have a real screamer here, one that’s not as lairy as stuff like the Focus ST, but more like a Volkswagen GTI for people who want to avoid VW service bills.

There are a few details which seem neat at first but might not age well – the small headsup display and the flat-panel screen fixed on the dash stick out a bit. However, the rest is relatively classy, nicer than most of the Japanese competition, and ready to go toe-to-toe with the Germans. Overall cabin space isn’t quite as good as something more mundane and practical like a Toyota Corolla, but Mazda does still offer a hatchback for a little more space and flexibility. A rear-facing child seat fits without issue.

Performance:

There are two engine options for the Mazda3, neither of which will seemingly light the world on fire. The base model carries a 2.0L four-cylinder making 155hp at 6000rpm and 150lb/ft of torque at 4000rpm, and the upgraded GT gets a 2.5L engine with 184hp at 5700rpm, and 185lb/ft of torque at 3,250rpm. All those figures are on regular fuel. So, no turbochargers, no turbodiesels, and just a choice of either a six-speed conventional automatic transmission or six-speed manual throughout the range (no all-wheel-drive either). However, Mazda’s clever high-compression direct-injection engines are marvels.

But as it is, it’s got plenty of power and a finely-tuned handling that make it as home on the track as on the street. There aren’t many compact cars you can say that about.

Features:

Step up to a Mazda3 GT, and it’s a choice of whether or not to go to the luxury package. Power moonroof, pushbutton start, and Bluetooth handsfree are standard for the GT, with leather and a power driver’s seat optional. However, a fully-loaded Mazda3 isn’t cheap: my luxurypackage tester was $28,495 before freight and taxes. Fuel economy for any of Mazda’s modern engines is excellent. Here, the 2.5 is rated at 9.2L/100kms city and 6.6L/100kms on the highway. The impressive part is the 7.0L/100kms it returned in mixed-use driving, despite a little extra throttle because it’s so much fun. Unlike turbocharged options, Mazda’s direct-injection system seems to deliver the good in the real world too.

Green Light:

As the 2.5GT revs straight for redline you’ll run right into the fuel cut every time if you aren’t paying attention. I figure Mazda’s hedging their bets here and keeping a few hundred rpm in check as this engine doesn’t slow one jot as it closes in on max-revs. It pulls cleanly and strongly, and it’s a toss-up as to which is better, the clean-shifting manual, or the very well-tuned automatic.

Great styling, inside and out; excellent handling; efficient, punchy engines

Handling is very good, not overly stiff, but with a definite positive feel to the way the ‘3 takes a set in the corner and

Good enough for the racetrack, but great in the real world too!

Stop Sign:

Interior a little small; engine can be noisy when cold; gets pricey with options

Physical literacy guru visits Ridge ‘Canadians want their health care, but they don’t want their health,’ Dr. Dean Kriellaars told the audience at a workshop at Maple Ridge City Hall on Feb. 19. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

A world renowned expert in physical literacy delivered a sobering message to the audience during a two-hour workshop inside Maple Ridge City Hall Council chambers on Feb. 19. Dr. Dean Kriellaars, a Canadian Sport for Life Leadership team member and the creator of the PLAYTools, visited Maple Ridge as part of a regional tour of B.C. communities. Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services is currently working with the local sport and health community to develop strategy for sport and physical activity in the two communities. As part of that vision, PacificSport Fraser Valley and Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure hosted the two-hour discussion-based planning workshop utilizing Kriellaars’ expertise as a physical literacy strategist. Kriellaars’ spoke about the importance of physical literacy, exercise, and healthy lifestyles. During his presentation, Kriellaars said that physical education is “only a piece of the puzzle.” “I’m a huge PhysEd fan, but it’s only a piece of this big puzzle,” Kriellaars said. He noted that while the world has become more literate in the past few years, obesity rates have risen dramatically. “The more literate we’ve become, the more obese we’ve become,” he said. “That’s 100 per cent true. What’s critical to understand here is that the literacy people said to us – which I agree with – ‘You will learn to read and write which is a skill, and as such, by reading and writing,

During a two-hour workshop on physical literacy, Dr. Dean Kriellaars spoke to audience members inside Maple Ridge City Hall council chambers on Thursday, Feb. 19. Below insets – Charts and graphs told the tale of Canada’s alarming diabetes and obesity rates. you’re going to participate fully in society and you’ll be enlightened and wise and you’ll do the right things, and you’ll be healthy.’” In actual fact, he said, “it’s gone in the wrong direction.” But he said, while the world is more literate and knowledgeable than ever before, it’s forgotten about conventional wisdom. “Eat well and exercise regularly: that’s called wisdom,” he said. “We don’t follow those words. Canadians want their health care, but they don’t want their health.” He urged audience members to eat like a pig and run like a dog. “Not decrease the food you eat, that’s a shameful thing to do,” he said. Today, “because anti-smoking people did the right job,” physical inactivity and obesity kills more people than smoking, Kriellaars pointed out. Physical literacy is key, he said. “If you’re physically literate, you can have the ability to use your movements to participate

in society, whether you’re in physio, whether you’re in occupation, whether you’re in performance arts, sports, or recreation, it doesn’t matter,” he said.

About the strategy

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services has been reaching out to the community sport groups and associations over the past two years, to gain a deeper understanding of sport in our communities. Through event participation, executive board interviews, and conversations both formal and casual with coaches, parents and volunteers, staff have embarked on a process to create a Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Community Sport Strategy that will provide a framework to address common interests and priorities across the region. The Sport and Physical Activity Policy was approved by the Parks and Leisure Services Commission

in January 2015. This policy is a guiding document in the development of a Community Sport Strategy. A small group of sport leaders took part in a meeting in January to develop a draft vision and goals for the strategy. The second meeting, to be held tonight (Feb. 26), will be an opportunity for all interested sport leaders to take part in the discussion, finalize the vision and priority goals of the sport strategy, and start developing an action plan to accomplish the strategy goals. Helping spearhead the project is Eric Stepura, who has worked with the Vancouver and Abbotsford in developing visions and strategies for sport and recreation to facilitate this process. Stepura is the director of leisure services for the City of White Rock and will support in the facilitation of the ‘MR PM Sport Strategy’ project. In addition to Stepura, School District 42, Pacific Sport, and Fraser Health are partners in this process.

Ramblers set for B.C.’s

Eight Maple Ridge Secondary wrestlers have qualified for this weekend’s B.C. high school championships in Surrey.

Heading into this weekend’s B.C. high school championship meet at the Abbotsford Ag-Rec Centre, the Maple Ridge Secondary wrestling team is quietly confident, according to its coach, Bill McCrae.

At the provincial qualifiers held in Surrey last week, Olivia McDonnel led the way with a gold medal performance. Meanwhile, fellow Ramblers Wolfie Wallace, Cam Hicks and Dionte Hurtado ended up finishing one step down on the podium, with each placing second. Pitt Meadow Secondary’s Mateya Hainz rounded out the medal count with a bronze. “With Cam and Libby hunting for gold, it should be quite an exciting weekend,” McCrae said.
