Business is blooming at Amsterdam Greenhouses & Garden Centre thanks to the unusually warm January and February. Nursery owner Lidy Kok was all smiles showing off the plants already growing in their Pitt Meadows greenhouses. Carr Street resident Vash Ramsoondar (below) took advantage of the nice weather to do some yard work this past weekend.

Willow the Siberian husky, with foster ‘mom’ Faydra Nichols, weighs 23.3 kilograms, up from 14 kilograms when she was first brought into the Maple Ridge SPCA shelter.

Willow on mend A Siberian husky has come a long way since being found on the brink of starvation. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

It’s been 36 days since Willow, a young Siberian husky found emaciated and near death in rural Maple Ridge, was brought to the Maple Ridge SCPA shelter by a Good Samaritan. Today, Willow is 9.3 kilograms heavier than when she was on Jan. 31 – the day she came into the shelter – and is on the mend in every facet. This is thanks in large part to a loving foster “mom” in Faydra Nichols, the assistant manager at the Maple Ridge SPCA. Nichols and her family have been caring for Willow since Feb. 2. “It’s been great – a lot of work,” Nichols said.

Environment

Warm winter welcomed by most Near-record warmth in January and February had its perks for many in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

While most Canadians felt like they were locked in a deep freezer in January and February, for folks living in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and the rest of metro Vancouver, it felt more like mid-spring than mid-winter. And no one seems to be complaining. For January, Vancouver had an average daily high of 5.6ºC, up from the usual 4.1, with an average low of 2.9ºC, up from 1.4, predictably moving the January mean temperature up to 8.3ºC from its usual 6.9. The February picture was even sunnier – with an average high of 10.8ºC, up from 8.2, a daily minimum of 5.5ºC, up from 1.6, adding up to a mean temperature of 8.2ºC, up substantially from a typical February’s 4.9. At the Bell-Irving Hatchery, at Kanaka Creek Regional Park, hatchery manager Darin McClain said weather is a huge factor in operations. The much warmer-than-normal winter has caused higher water temperatures in many coastal streams, McClain noted. This has accelerated the growth of the eggs/alevins, resulting in salmon fry emer-

ging much earlier than normal. “Here at Bell-Irving we are three to four weeks ahead of last year,” McClain said. “Naturally this has us prepping for thousands of hungry mouths to feed, far sooner than expected.” In hatcheries west of Bell-Irving, McClain said fish are already emerging, when normally they first appear in mid-March. “Normally, at the end of March, our first chum will emerge, but they’ll emerge probably at the end of next week,” McClain told the TIMES on Feb. 26. “But if all of a sudden it gets cool, it will slow things back down, here, a bit.” For commuters in Maple Ridge, good news comes in the form of early fixes on local roadways, thanks to favourable conditions for maintenance crews. Potholes are usually temporarily filled through January and February and permanently repaired during March and April, but much of that work was done way ahead of schedule, courtesy of the warmer weather. From Jan. 1 to early March, Maple Ridge’s maintenance crews had already poured out 226 tons of asphalt to repair local roads. Over the same period in 2014, crews were only able to put down 38 tons.

“We’re able to attack these projects a lot earlier,” said Walter Oleschak, the superintendent of roads and fleet operations for the City of Maple Ridge. “It’s good news to have us out there taking care of these potholes, so drivers won’t have to navigate around them.” The pleasant weather was also great news for Amsterdam Greenhouses & Garden Centre, operated by Lidy and Ron Kok. Lidy Kok said the gardening centre at 19100 Old Dewdney Trunk Road had a record February in terms of sales. “It’s been fabulous,” Lidy said. “People are ready to get into the garden.” She added that the flowering bulbs are blooming “way ahead of normal” and greenhouses have seen a lot of growth, with vegetable plants such as peas, lettuce, broccoli, and cauliflower, and kale ready to be planted. Golfers also had reason to celebrate, especially in February, a month which Pitt Meadows Golf Club assistant professional Phil Kitsch described as “exceptional” at the year-round course at 13615 Harris Road. – with files from the Vancouver Province

Overdose warning

by Cole Wagner

Statistics on fentanyl-related overdoses and deaths have prompted police and health authorities to issue a public warning — particularly to recreational pot users. Maple Ridge, Langley, Surrey, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Prince George, and Fort St. John were all named as predominant communities in which drug overdoses have occurred. • More at www.mrtimes.com

fighters scaled the roof a home to assess the damage, while smoke billowed around them. Three fire engines, paramedics, and police all crowded onto a packed Walter Florence Road to control the scene. Two houses suffered extensive damages, although nobody was harmed. Two of three cats were still reported missing. Katzie council member Peter James said the community will now focus on helping the families affected by the blaze. No details were available at press time as to what started the fire.

North Lougheed Connector

SmartCentres still setting sights on Pitt A plan to help cover road construction costs was part of a presentation made to City council by the land developer. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com

In an effort to bring the new Pitt Meadows City council up to speed and express a continued interest in developing the North Lougheed area, SmartCentres made a presentation to council last week, regarding the history, present-day situation, and future plans for 65 acres the company owns. David Major, a land development manager

with SmartCentres outlined key decisions he said the City made during the past 10 years that influenced SmartCentres’ decision to purchase the land and pursue development possibilities. As part of the development of the lands, Major said that an interim connector road consisting of a two-lane roadway from Harris Road to Abernethy Way can be provided by SmarCentres at no cost to the City or taxpayer. “We propose to develop 43 acres of land for a high-quality shopping centre, and we envision that an additional 19 acres of our land will accommodate employment-generating uses, such as a business park and or light industrial uses,” Major said.

“Rather than an all-or-nothing approach, we envision a phased approach... an interim north Lougheed Connector could be constructed at no cost to the taxpayer or City, and tax revenues could be generated through incremental development.” However, Major said the cost to build such a road is currently unknown and would need to be determined by professional consultants. He noted there has been no detailed traffic study conducted in the area since 2005/2006. At this point, the transportation ministry has made no decision regarding transportation development in the area, Major added. •More at www.mrtimes.com, search “SmartCentres”

Hunt on for acne-scarred bandit MANY NEW REDUCTIONS! *LIMITED EXCEPTIONS APPLY.

Mounties are investigating three similar robberies not yet linked.

Old acne scars under his lip might be a distinct enough feature to help catch a slender armed bandit who robbed a Maple Ridge gas station Monday evening. Mounties are asking for the public’s help to catch an armed robber who entered the Chevron at Dewdney Trunk Road and 216th Street on Monday, just before 5 p.m. Producing a weapon, the 5 ft. 9 in. man in his late 20s or early 30s, and sporting a baseball cap and hoody, made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, said Ridge

Meadows RCMP Insp. Dan Splinter. “The store’s clerk did a very commendable job by complying with the suspect’s demands, and remaining safe throughout dealing with this person,” Splinter said. Police now say they’re investigating three similar type of robberies, but are not yet sure if it’s the same suspect. “Investigators continue to look for leads, and certainly welcome any information from citizens.” Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP at 604-463-6251, or to remain anonymous, people can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

African well honours local ALS victim by Ronda Payne

editorial@mrtimes.com

Before ALS robbed Michael Sands of his ability to speak, he asked his family to drill a well in Africa in his name. George Klassen, president of Project Wellness, did just that for his son-in-law on his most recent trip to provide clean water to villages in the country of Malawi. The well bearing Sands’ name is in the village of Tiyese in the Ntcheu district of the country. “Tiyese and Humba were the last two villages [we drilled wells for],” noted Klassen. “That would make 27 and 28 [total wells].” Klassen’s next trip will be in June with plans to drill three more wells, and sights are set on another trip in October or November. A consistent donor from Port Moody always funds a well on

He will fund one of the three in June. A couple from Ronda Payne/TIMES Manitoba will also join Klassen on his next trip to witness the drilling of the well they’ve funded. “This time I go in June and the president [of Malawi] wants to meet with me,” Klassen noted. “This is the year I drill. Last year I built a school. I always drill a well

first.” The wells provide fresh drinking and irrigation water to the villages in the land-locked country. Klassen knows access to fresh water is essential for the people of the region, so he helps a village by providing a well, food, and seeds. In time, he expects them to become self-sustaining by growing enough food to feed their own village and sell to others. “I am there for the widows and the orphans,” he said. “I tell them

‘you will not be orphans, I will watch over you’.” The work Klassen does through Project Wellness (a division of Amazon Evangelism Society) is noted by those around him for having a hands-on and just-get-toit style. “We have no church standing behind us, but we have a lot of church people,” Klassen said of the organization he spearheads. The awareness of his work has gone to Parliament with local MP Randy Kamp mentioning Klassen’s work in the House of Commons. “I have people’s money from here and I make sure it goes to where they’ve designated it,” he said. “I drill [a well] for $5,000 in American currency. We have to give an account of how the money is spent each year.” He also has five individuals on his board of directors who help make things happen. This has been important in the past few years when Klassen’s daughter Nadine Sands (who serves as the organization’s vice-president) took time to be with her husband Michael in the last years of his life. She has written a book about ALS which is set to be released on April 2. “Lot’s of people are enquiring about her book,” Klassen said, noting that locally, Save-On-Foods will carry it and host a book signing. “It’s exciting times.” For more about Project Wellness, visit www.projectwellness.ca.

Our View

Support safer celebrations We are approaching that time of year when many young people’s thoughts are turning towards graduation, and their entry into the “real world” after high school. Plans are underway for continuing education into universities, technical schools, and trade schools. Some will choose apprenticeships or entry-level jobs with prospects for career enhancement. Some will float for a bit. They may not have a clear idea yet of what they want to do with the rest of their lives, and in an increasingly rapidly changing world, it’s not hard to sympathize with their indecision. Many of these young people will opt for a transition period, with perhaps some travel or other form of intermission – a few decades ago, it was commonly referred to as “going off to find yourself.” Whatever plans may or may not be formulating in those young minds as they approach the milestone, between then and now, most of them will celebrate. Not many years ago, that celebration was almost certain to include consumption of alcohol – immodest quantities of alcohol, in fact – as if that were some sort of proof of coming of age. Grad parties – “grad drunks,” they were often called – were held in a back corner of a woodsy park, or in an abandoned gravel pit, or at a lakeside retreat, or in any secluded location with limited accessibility… because the organizers and participants all knew that the gatherings were illegal, irresponsible, and downright dangerous. Grad drunks are still organized, some with complicity of parents of kids involved… and they’re still illegal, irresponsible, and dangerous. But in recent decades, such illicit gatherings are being replaced with “dry grads.” It’s a way for young men and women to “bust out” at the end of their secondary school years without endangering their own or others’ lives. Support local schools’ dry grads. – B.G.

Dalton brushes off meter concerns

Dear Editor, I mistakenly contacted MLA Marc Dalton several times (before he correctly informed me I was outside the bounds of his riding) regarding my concerns over his government’s “smart” meter program. Mr. Dalton was not well informed on the subject,

but of more concern was his unwillingness to become informed or to field serious questions. The smart meter project, born in secrecy and exempted from normal oversight, raises concerns of fire safety, elevated costs, timeof-use billing, electrical grid security, invasion of per-

Expertise desired

Letters to

Dear Editor, the Western Canada’s oil and gas resources have been in the media spotlight a lot, but it is our mineral resources and exploration expertise that make us a mining superpower. Exploration companies based in B.C. are active around the world. The expertise they’ve developed over years of exploring and mining in our province is creating economic opportunities for some of the most remote and impoverished people in the world. Knowledge is power, and the mineral exploration knowledge we are able to share with the world is just one more of the many gifts that the geology of B.C. has provided to us. sonal privacy, and adverse long-term health effects. The technology, which envelops entire cities in microwave radiation to send information wirelessly, cannot be proven safe. Citizens were not consulted, and are obstructed at every level when attempting to investigate. None of this is of any concern to our MLAs, who dutifully keep their eyes straight ahead and never stray from talking points. With our institutions increasingly hijacked by corporations, and democracy vanishing like the Arctic ice, we desperately need public servants of integrity willing to step out of line and ask hard questions. I would like to thank Mr. Dalton for his service, and in the best interests of Canada, wish him a long and happy retirement right here in Maple Ridge. Ron McNutt, Maple Ridge

Bell declining developers’ donations

Dear Editor, I have said thanks but no thanks to $2,300 in developer donations in what was one of the most expensive municipal elections in Maple Ridge history. I appreciate the offering as a show of support, but there’s trust to be rebuilt and I don’t want the public to question whether or not my decisions are made independently. Prior to my election and for the duration of the last term, I’ve heard the major-

ity of Maple Ridge residents say that a lack of services paired with a constant tax increase has caused them to lose trust in their council, their city hall, and their development community. It’s up to council to set guidelines for developers. Selling property in well serviced areas with room for children to attend nearby schools is good for residents and makes it easier for developers to sell properties, but it’s council’s job to guide development and

“Yes. Because Maple Ridge needs MORE drug addicts. Good job City… And everyone will suddenly have ‘glaucoma’… What a joke.” – Carrie Savard “Seriously?”

– Kim Plumridge

“Gordy Robson couldn’t have a golf course/farm but this guy can have an industrial-sized medical marijuana grow op?!” – Denise Powell “Medical marijuana grow op??? I doubt it.” – Nancy McConnell “Now I do object to having it placed where it is being built. I wish some people would understand that the laws that B.C. has in place now for people to apply for a medical-user licence are very strict and the doctors are very knowledgeable in what they are working with. You can’t just walk into anyplace and say hey I need weed for this or that. They do put you through testing and they do say no to a lot of people. My sister is only 24 and may only have another four years to be mobile until she has to use a wheelchair for the rest of her life – due to a medical disease in her bones and muscles. clearly set expectations. I didn’t receive any donations from developers in the 2011 election, in which I was elected on a campaign for lower property taxes, responsible development, and increased services. I was one of only two incumbents re-elected in 2014 with the election of a new mayor and four new councilors. I spent much of my previous term having to fight to improve dialogue between the development community, the school board, council, and City staff, and I am happy to be working with a new council that shares my vision. I put forward a motion last term to create a table where the parties would come together to discuss responsible development, but there wasn’t an appetite to do anything differently. I’m happy to be working with a council that supports these conversations, and a mayor who has already added the creation of a Responsible Development Charter to our work plan. It’s up to council to represent our citizens and create the framework within which our developers will be viewed by the public as an asset to our community. n a trip to Granville Island, the idea of starting their own business became a topic of conversation for Maple Ridge residents Linda Bell and Kayla Gilliland. “We just said, ‘hey, wouldn’t that be fun?’” recalled Bell. That was a year-and-ahalf ago. Now the duo is set to see their idea come to fruition this Saturday, with the opening of their new store: Buttons and Bows Ltd. “She [Kayla] has been sewing since she was about eight years old, and I’ve always been in fashion, and we thought if we could combine our talents together and be partners, then we could do something unique and special,” explained Bell. “We picked a name we felt reflected on the business and here we are today.” The business itself is a “sewing lounge” Bell explained. “We supply sewing supplies, sewing classes and workshops.” The duo combine this with fashion by “bringing in ladies consignment clothing and small household items, including Kayla’s own brand, Kay Loren, in which she makes her own clothing

Butt makes his stand at The ACT Beloved Canadian funnyman Brent Butt is bringing his conversation-style solo act to Maple Ridge next week.

It definitely feels like spring has sprung a little early this year! These warm sunny days have me swooning for spring fashion, activities and even the dreaded

by Ronda Payne

Maple Ridge will welcome comedian Brent Butt to The ACT on Friday, March 13.

editorial@mrtimes.com

Ask Brent Butt about what he does for a living and he will tell you he’s living his dream. Since he was 12 years old, all he ever wanted to do was standup comedy, TV shows, and movies. Maple Ridge gets to see Butt’s love of standup at The ACT next Friday, March 13. Perhaps best known for coming into living rooms on the small screen in the Emmy-nominated Corner Gas, Butt has been doing standup since 1988 and sees his “routine” as a discussion. “I don’t really do many ‘jokes’,” he told The TIMES. “It’s more of a discussion that’s (hopefully) funny.” He’s the winner of four Canadian Comedy Awards for best male stand-up, best male TV performance (twice), and best writing of a TV series – the latter being for Corner Gas, his own creation. He is also the recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to community and country. The difference between working on TV and performing live is vast, in Butt’s opinion. “Standup is a solo effort, so it’s very different [from TV],” he said. “More loose, less structured.” Despite those differences, fans of Corner Gas will find a similarity in the humour from that TV show to Butt’s visit to The ACT on March 13. It’s an easy commute for Butt to

spring clean. This past week I noticed more people walking throughout our downtown core, which is beautiful to see. Here are a few ways to put a little spring in your step! After months of living in dark grey colours it is time to freshen up that wardrobe! Talk to Margo at Crystal Blu Fashion in ValleyFair Mall, she has an array of new Spring & Summer outfits in stock. Or why not swing by T’s on 224th to add a pop of colour to your existing wardrobe; owner Cindy just received heaps of new spring scarfs in stock most of which are only $12.95 each. For the wee ones, make sure to pop into Monkey Business. Don’t miss their amazing brands of clothing and footwear, which will keep your children looking stylish into spring.

come to Maple Ridge as a resident of Vancouver, and he noted he tours any time he’s not in production on a TV show or movie. “Gotta work, work, work,” he said. “Plus, I love the work.” His love of doing live performance comes from the ever changing nature of it and the instant feedback. “It’s truly different every night, because every cluster of individuals creates a brand new creature, and you have no idea what it wants, or what it likes, or what it hates,” he said. “The fun is trying to figure that out.” Tickets to see Brent Butt at 7:30 p.m. on Friday are $46 from The ACT, at 11944 Haney Place, by phone at 604-476-2787, or online at www.theactmapleridge.org.

on Dewdney Trunk Road is the girl to see. With training from Suki’s Ready for an exciting new nail colour, swing by Cloud nine to check out a line of polish they’ve started carrying. It feels like a gel, is shiny like shellac, but doesn’t require a lamp to set, or soaking to remove. I am a big fan of Grapely Admired and all of the other fun spring colours they are using for manicures and pedicures. Brighten your home or office space with a small spring arrangement from Maple ridge Florist. I like to keep one on my desk at work for the aroma and I promise it will lift your spirits. The best part is you don’t always need a big bouquet to make a huge impact; a bunch of bright tulips are only $2.99! Ever since they founded the group in 2012, the members of Xtreme Alumni have tried to bridge the worlds of theatre and charity. Each year, the group puts on a series of shows to raise money for a new cause. When ideas for this year’s beneficiary started flowing, “We just want to they hit on a local in need: Daniel Rempel, who worked do a good job for at Timberline Ranch, had Daniel’s family.” been diagnosed with cancer Jodi Campbell in 2014. Many of the members of Xtreme Alumni shared a connection with Timberline, and therefore Daniel too, said Jodi Campbell, the administrator for Xtreme Alumni. But while rehearsals were well underway in preparation for their shows at the end of March, tragedy struck. Rempel lost his battle with cancer, and passed away on Feb. 18. With heavy hearts, the 22 members of Xtreme Alumni went back to rehearsal, even more committed to raising money for the Rempel family, Campbell explained. “We just want to do a good job for Daniel’s family,” Three shows, a musical medley, are set for the end of March at the Christian Life Assembly on 232nd Street in Maple Ridge. Proceeds from ticket sales and proceeds from a bakesale at intermission will go towards the Rempel’s family.

Plenty of thrills in a compact sportscar BY BRENDAN McALEER

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer •

We’re all up to our eyeballs in horsepower these days. It’s a rising tide that floats all boats, from the gong-show insanity of the Dodge Hellcat twins, to the capability of your average V6 family sedan to out-muscle a mid80s Ferrari. Happily, speed limits have been raised to accommodate all the fresh new ponies prancing under our right foot. Oh wait, no they haven’t. There’s been a 10km/h bump on some rural highways in this province, but for the most part you can sneeze at a gas pedal and be watching your car get flat-decked away by the RCMP five minutes later. But what if fun wasn’t so much about the fast and furious side of things, but about that seat-of-your-pants scoot you get in a lightweight sportscar? What about something that’s quick enough to be fun without being fast enough to be a liability? Well here it is then, the Scion FR-S.

Design:

A joint venture between Subaru and Toyota, the Scion FR-S is basically identical to the Subaru BR-Z; this latter is a bit more expensive and has slightly less aggressive suspension tuning. I’ve always felt the Scion version to be slightly better looking than the Subaru, wearing its distinctly Japanese styling well. The factory-sized 17” alloys look right sized for the car, although there’s a large aftermarket these days to swap them out for something lighter, perhaps shod with grippier rubber. However, as it stands, it’s a balanced shape. Fog lights are a dealer-installed accessory, and you can also order your FR-S with a TRD exhaust for a bit more rasp out the back. However, in factory-spec form, it’s already pretty much got everything it needs.

Environment:

The most direct competitor for the FR-S is perhaps the Mazda Miata, but the Scion has a few advantages for practicality-minded folks. For one thing, it’s a 2+2,

which means booster seats fit in the back, or a couple of cramped adult passengers in a (literal) pinch. A rear-facing child seat can be crammed in there, but only if the person riding in the passenger seat is Bilbo Baggins. The general feel of the materials in the FR-S is just as with other members of the Scion range: inexpensive but durable. The seats are great, as is the steering wheel and shifter, and everything else is just, well, there. There’s a little extra padding where you might knock a knee against something during hard cornering, but the overall impression is that the primary focus of this car is driving, not comfort.

important to offer brain-bending levels of grip. Instead, you want predictive handling and perhaps a tendency to slide out a little. Here the FR-S is a relative delight. Early versions of the cars are a hooligan’s plaything, but you can’t go around all day hanging the tail out in front of Jonny Law. The FR-S now turns in with aplomb and then zings through the corner with a light and nimble feel. The wetter the roads, the better, and up in the mountains of the North Shore, the little Scion was much more fun than some hugely capable and powerful allwheel-drive twin-turbo Audi might be. There are a few drawbacks to consider if this is your only car. It’s quite loud as a highway cruiser, and while the suspension isn’t overly stiff by sportscar standards, a lengthy road-trip isn’t something to be embarked upon lightly.

However, it should also be mentioned that the rear seats fold down, making the trunk just large enough to carry four extra tires (to a track day or similar). That gives the FR-S just a little extra usability, which is handy if it’s your only car.

Still, slicing through the fog and rain at the top of Mount Seymour was never so much fun – and it didn’t even involve being a total miscreant. Mission accomplished, little car.

Performance:

Features:

Under the hood is an odd hybrid of an engine: a Subaru 2.0L flat-four combined with Toyota’s direct-injection system. It makes 200hp at 7,000rpm and 151lb/ft of torque between 6,400 and 6,600rpm. That’s not a lot, and when it comes to the torque output, that’s really not a lot. 200hp seems respectable on the surface next to hot hatches like the Ford Fiesta ST, but you really have to wind out the FR-S’s four-banger to its absolute limit to access that power. However, there is sufficient power here to have a good time as it’s not about the straight-line speed at all, but about what happens when you start pushing the FR-S through a few corners. For 2015, Scion has tamed the FR-S’s pervious tendency to be a bit tail-happy, but it’s all for the better. Rather famously, the FR-S comes wearing a set of lowrolling resistance tires found as the upgrade on the Japanese-market Prius. A Prius? That’s right: it’s not

Apart from the optional premium audio and satellite navigation, the FR-S comes relatively well-equipped as its base model. The touchscreen navigation is nothing to write home about, so you’d be better off just getting a secure attachment for your smartphone. Premium is required and official fuel economy is rated at 10.9L/100kms city and 7.9L/100kms on the highway. Observed fuel economy for mixed driving was right at 10L/100kms, very good for spirited driving.

Green Light:

Grippy seats; light and nimble feel; surprisingly usable for small space

Stop Sign:

Bare bones interior; engine lacks grunt; noisy cabin at speed

The Checkered Flag:

Plenty of thrills in a compact sportscar that’s still practical enough for every day.

After a season plagued with injury, Nathan Stein is eager to get back to his winning ways. He’ll get the chance to do that today, as he competes against some of B.C.’s best swimmers at the junior provincial championships, hosted at Surrey Sport and Leisure

Complex. Though Stein is only competing in one event at Thursday’s meet, he’s looking forward to “getting the chance to see if I can put together a solid 50,” he said. Stein just recently returned from Plantation, Fla., where he was taking part in a Rio 2016 podium camp, designed to keep Paralympic medal hopefuls in shape for the Games next summer. Before Florida, Stein was sidelined for four months – the longest stretch of his career – because of con-

Before the Pan Am Games, Stein will travel to Scotland to swim at the world championships. “It’s probably the most intense summer I’ve ever had lined up, but I’m excited,” he said. “I’m not worried, I’ve got the best coach in the country,” Stein added.
