Our View
Fraud victims are not alone Have you fallen for a scam? And in retrospect, did the whole thing seem so obvious that you’re terribly embarrassed that you fell for it at all? Too embarrassed to report it to police? That’s what the scam artist is counting on: that you’ll feel so foolish that you’ll let them get away with it. The embarrassment card is especially effective in so-called “romance” scams. If you’ve been had, you’re not alone – far from it. In fact, you have more company than you probably realize… because of the embarrassment. It all seems so harmless at first: a brief introduction between strangers, likely initiated via Facebook or through an online dating site. Communication begins. Frequency of messaging increases. Conversations are intense. Photos are shared. Feelings develop. A relationship forms… The ruses are deliberate, calculated money schemes created by experienced fraudsters to get as much money as possible, usually from lonely adults. Cultivation of a relationship can take months, often building through flowers and small gifts, before the hints begin that all is not well. At some point, an imagined trust is established, and requests for money begin. The lines go something like this: “I’m desperate… It’s just this once… I promise… I will pay you back… I love you.” It may be embarrassing to realize you’ve been had… but it should be even more embarrassing to realize you’re letting someone get away with it, that you’ve effectively – if unwittingly – financed the fraudsters’ next project. March is Fraud Prevention Month, and the RCMP want people to be wary – and to be aware that, the police are on their side and want to stop the victimization. – B.G.

Swimming pool repair waste of money
Dear Editor, Regarding our swimming pool in Maple Ridge needing major repairs at a cost of millions of dollars [Falling pipes force pool closure, Feb. 3, TIMES], it is a waste of money to rebuild the old pool complex located in the wrong location, like the RCMP building and our City hall. I cannot believe this mess was ever approved a number of years back, with no parking to accommodate all involved. The swimming pool should be a new complex attached to Planet Ice community ice rinks, where there is lots of parking, lots of land available. The Planet Ice complex itself is also in need of serious repairs, and now would be

No vote for Mission
Dear Editor, Contrary to a large advertisement published in The TIMES on Feb. 26, Mission residents will not be voting in the transit referendum. Mission is part of the Fraser Valley Regional District, not Metro Vancouver. I contacted Elections BC and confirmed Mission is not on Elections BC’s voting list. I filed a complaint with Elections BC against TransLink and the Mayors’ Council, because they did not practise due diligence. They printed a large, false advertisement which encouraged Mission voters to vote “yes” in Metro Vancouver’s transit referendum. Linda Meyer, Maple Ridge

Haney Target halts fixture sales Cole Wagner
Posters were still up on Tuesday, despite the stop on fixture sales at Target.
editorial@mrtimes.com
A U.S. retailer, in the midst of a Canada-wide exit, slowed part of its liquidation strategy – at least in Haney – Tuesday. “Everything must go” has been Target’s motto ever since the massive bigbox chain decided to pack up and ship out of Canada late last year. But – at least for the time being – that motto might come with a big asterisk. CBC reported Tuesday that Target has halted the sales of store fixtures, which have been advertised as being for sale since it was announced that
Target was liquidating its Canadian assets. Despite those reports, on Tuesday afternoon Target’s Maple Ridge location was still plastered with posters which read: “Fixtures, furniture, and equipment FOR SALE!” A store representative confirmed that Target had

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future.

The Maple Ridge Boxing Club is experiencing a significant growth spurt.

On the Fly
The Who’s bombastic rock anthem Baba O’Riley roared from speakers inside the Maple Ridge Boxing Club’s gym as boxers were put through their paces. The frenetic pace of their workout – skipping rope furiously, burpees, shadow boxing, push-ups, a quick jog around Memorial Peace Park – repeated over, and over, and over again, was enough to take a bystander’s breath away. The gym in the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre building is where boxers, recreational and competitive, learn the ropes. Helping to conduct the workouts is Rick Funk, a decorated amateur and Maple Ridge Hometown Hero who has returned to his roots to become part of the club’s coaching staff. Funk’s boxing resume is impressive to say the least. Before hanging up his gloves in 1989, Funk racked up a 75-8 amateur record, won the U19 provincial championships and earned a silver in the national championships in 1988, received the Jimmy Symes award for top boxer in B.C., and competed for Team Canada in the U19 “A” team in San Juan, Puerto Rico, losing in a close decision to the world champion. Joining Funk are fellow coaches Jason Burke, Bill Drewitt, and Brad Scott. Under the B.C. Amateur Boxing umbrella, the club has five com-

The goal, Scott said, is to continue a tradition of excellence established by longtime coach John Skanks, who started managing the Maple Ridge Boxing Club in 1981. After battling health problems for three-and-a-half years, the man affectionately known as “Pops” by the youngsters he trained died from congestive health failure on Jan. 13, 2014 at the age of 85. John’s widow Carol is still involved with the club as its secretary, registrar, treasurer, and general manager. She sat near the front doors of the club, watching the young boxers, who filled the room around the boxing ring, go

If one guy is not doing the workout properly, everybody else pays for it. If someone comes in late, everybody does 20 pushups for the person who comes in late.” Scott said the Maple Ridge Boxing Club is one to be reckoned with, but for those who join the club for recreational purposes, the coaches don’t push them to get into the ring competitively. “We’ve had kids come in here looking down on the ground and now they hold their heads up high with pride,” Scott said. One of the club’s busiest boxers is 21-year-old Brennan Demas, who holds a 4-2 record in the 147-pound weight class. Most recently, he split his last two bouts against Hassan Hamza from Griffin’s Boxing Club. “I’d like to go nationals and see where it takes me,” said Demas, who is a year-and-a-half into his amateur boxing career. “I still have a few fights to go before I’m open class, so 10 fights after that, and come that time I’ll try to make provincials and go from there.”

Demas, who trains at the club four nights a week, admitted that he was initially nervous to be in the ring, trading punches. But he’s since settled into a groove. His clubmate Mac Hutton’s had his first bout on Feb. 11 in Mission and enjoyed the experience, despite losing a split decision to Franklin Curry from Bridge Street Boxing. “It was kind of scary but after the first round I was pretty comfortable,” Hutton noted. Absorbing his first punch in a competitive bout wasn’t a big shock for 21-year-old Hutton. That’s because he’s experienced it before, many times, during sparring sessions. “When I got hit for the first time in there, I realized, I’ve been hit harder in this gym,” he said. “I wasn’t too worried about it. It’s weird how you grow to love being punched in the face.” Scott pointed out that 13-yearold Jackson Smith, who saw his first ring action recently, is a young “up-and-comer with a lot of potential.”

NX
A Bold New Crossover cylinder delivers 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque which is pretty good but not class-leading.
BY DAVID CHAO
Lexus is the latest manufacturer to enter the evergrowing luxury compact SUV segment. By creating a stylish, this-looks-like-a-transformer vehicle called the NX, it’s trying to make a real impact in this fiercely competitive market. The NX is eye-catching, comfortable and comes with Lexus’ reputation for reliability. Rivals include the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, though the NX is actually bigger and roomier than most of these cars. The NX is available in two models: the NX 200t which is the first Lexus with a turbocharged engine, and the NX 300h which has a sophisticated hybrid system.
Design
The Lexus NX is loosely based on the Toyota RAV4 mechanically, but the design is much more dramatic and it is so different from the RAV4 that you can’t see any resemblance from inside or out. The first thing you notice about the NX is the gaping trapezoidal front grille. Lexus’ trademark “spindle” grille dominates the front, which protrudes quite far ahead of the front axle but it’s actually surprisingly appealing. Intricately detailed LED headlights sit high on the NX’s shoulders. The separate daytime running lights are sharp and accent the striking grille. Moving along the side, the doors are nicely sculpted and the rounded roof gives the NX a balanced appearance. At the back, the three-dimensional taillights add some drama; the edge of the lights actually stick out from the body making the car look wider than it really is. The spoiler over the window and dual exhausts make it look aggressive. The cabin is driver-focused and available with an impressive level of onboard technology. Passengers will appreciate how spacious and comfortable the NX is in comparison to other compact SUVs. Those who want an extra “spice’ thrown into the NX can add the F SPORT package, which includes an even more menacing front grille, F SPORT badging, aluminium sport pedals, a g-force meter, and liquid injection foam F SPORT seats.
Performance
As mentioned, the NX 200t is the first Lexus with a twin-scroll turbocharged engine. The 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle four-
Being an all-new engine, it is packed with modern technology which includes the turbo that is built into the exhaust manifold – this helps reduce turbo lag to almost unnoticeable levels. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the NX 200t offers sporty dynamics with all-wheel drive and a lock-up torque converter. A three-setting Drive Mode Select system (Sport, Normal and Eco) allows drivers to modify vehicle responsiveness. Since the NX 300h weighs more and has less power, it feels less peppy than its stablemate. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system is built around a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder and delivers 194 total system horsepower and 152 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission and all-wheel drive, the NX 300h provides smooth acceleration yet 7.4L/100km combined fuel efficiency. Also, this is the first Lexus Hybrid Drive to feature a kick-down function to improve acceleration. And, the hybrid battery is split into two separate pods for better weight distribution. While the handling is crisp and linear, there is something absent from the NX’s driving characteristic. Perhaps its ride is too smooth; perhaps the steering is too numb – not sure the exact reason but the NX excites its drivers from the outside but not so much when it’s driven.
Environment
The cabin of the NX has a lot going for it and feels more expensive than the price suggests. The dash is covered in stitched material and nearly every other surface is soft and/or padded with a high level of accuracy. Interior measurements of the NX are very similar to the RAV4. However, as with the exterior, the NX is more sport-minded as indicated by the tighter seats and wide centre console. The front seats are very supportive and comfortable. To provide further comfort and versatility, the rear seats split 60/40 and they even power recline and power fold. These are nice-to-have features that soon become must-have items. Not only is the NX quiet and comfortable, but it’s also filled

with intelligent technology. For example, it’s available with a Wireless Charging Tray and a 6.2-inch head up display – the largest in the Lexus range. The new optional Remote Touch Interface controls the navigation, climate control and connected devices. It works better than older designs found in other Lexus models and uses Haptic feedback when the cursor is over one of the on-screen buttons. Still, just give us an actual touch panel because no matter which automaker attempts to make these more user friendly, they are awful to use in general. The cargo capacity in the NX is less than the RAV4, thanks to its sloping roof. Capacity is 0.5 cubic metres in the NX 200t, and 0.475 cubic metres in the NX 300h.
Features
The NX 200t has a starting price of $40,950, and the NX 300h starts at $58,850. Standard equipment includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, heated exterior mirrors, auto dimming rearview mirror, backup camera, smart key system, and Bluetooth capability. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, clearance and backup sensors, dynamic cruise control, lane keeping assist system, blind spot monitoring, pre-collision system, rear cross traffic alert, rain-sensing wipers, and auto high beam. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for the NX 200t are 10.8 city, 8.8 highway and 9.9 combined. The NX 300h returns 7.1 city, 7.7 highway and 7.4 combined.
Thumbs Up
The new design certainly turns heads. Also, the new turbocharged engine is exciting and provides strong performance and admirable fuel economy.
Thumbs Down
The engine is raspy and the steering is numb, making the new NX a good performance vehicle but not a great one from a handling perspective.
The Bottom Line
If you are looking for a unique, high-tech-oriented and reliable crossover that is also eye-catching, consider the Lexus NX.
