MLA joins mayor against quarry MLA Doug Bing appeared before Pitt council to help battle a quarry proposal.
Spring ahead of schedule

Never underestimate the power of a group of women. And if those women are getting together, having fun, and giving to others – look out. They will be unstoppable. That’s the concept that formed the Avalon Sisters. Pitt Meadows resident Jennifer Jonsson and friends Sarah Nelson and Dorothy Clark decided to create an organization where women could go out as a group, have fun, and feel good about it. “We wanted to get women together... make it fun and easy,” said Jonsson. “But we wanted it to have a charity component.” Having run events since October, this month the Avalon Sisters will be hosting a knitting class on Sunday, March 29, at 3 p.m. in the atrium of Jimmy Mac’s Pub just south of the Golden Ears Bridge in Langley. “It’s a learn to knit night,” Jonsson noted. “Everyone there will knit a blanket square.” All the squares will be taken by the knitting instructor, Jody

Even if knitting isn’t at the top of the things-to-do list, Jonsson invites women to come out with their favourite lap craft and enjoy spending time with other women. “It’s open to all women,” she said. “We want everyone to come. “ Last month’s activity was painting taught by Tina Davis and while there were only 15 spots available, the group raised $282 for Cythera Transition House Society. “The energy has been amazing at all of our events,” Jonsson noted. “It’s women helping women, and they are there for a great cause and for a good time. It’s been wonderful.” To find out more or see an upcoming calendar of events, visit www.avalonsisters.org. Plus, for those who can’t attend but wish to contribute to the charities, Jonsson can provide a list of most needed items. Space is often limited for Avalon Sisters events, so spots are held once payment is received. Sign up for the March 29 knitting night by March 22 through the website, e-transfer funds to avalonsisters@shaw.ca, or call Jonsson for more information at 604-374-4568. Celtic jam meets St. Patrick’s Day Nigel Tucker is turning The ACT studio theatre into an Irish pub filled with traditional music.
Musician and long-time Maple Ridge resident Nigel Tucker will be organizing an Irish pub night with Celtic music at The ACT.
by Ronda Payne
editorial@mrtimes.com
It’s an extended celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and one that music-lovers won’t want to miss. On Tuesday, Mar. 24, the monthly Celtic jam lobby night and The ACT’s annual St. Patrick’s Day event merge into one great big Irish music party. Long-time Maple Ridge resident Nigel Tucker is turning The ACT’s studio theatre into a full-on Irish pub complete with the traditional Celtic music pub-goers would expect. Best of all, admission into this pub is free. “I usually host a monthly Celtic jam session in the lobby,” Tucker said. “We’re putting on a bit of an Irish concert [instead].” Tucker, who is a musician by trade, explained that he learned what he knows about traditional Canadian music from three Irish men on a Canadian TV show. It was a half-hour music

show called Tommy Makem and Ryan’s Fancy that aired in the mid-70s. Because of this show and his fascination with it, Tucker’s musical specialty is traditional folk music from Great Britain and Canadian folk music. Tucker will bring that love of traditional music to The ACT Tuesday night, when even the bar will make its way into the studio theatre. “They’ll set the bar in the pub and see how we go with the night,” Tucker noted. “It’s going to be a free night, and I’m suspecting we’ll end up hav-
ing to put closed circuit TV in the lobby.” Tucker will present the evening, but is also part of the two special acts: The Navvies and The Mission Pipe Band.
The Navvies have been around in one form or another since 1998, with Tucker and his friends Shelley and Tam Gordy. For this show, young, multi-talented musician Jesse Kazimer will join the band on the fiddle. “[Jesse is] one of the most talented young musicians we’ve ever seen,” Tucker said. Following the Navvies’ performance, the Mission Pipe Band will take the stage with Tucker as the group’s drum major. They are a much-enjoyed band that participates in a wide range of events, but is especially busy at this time of year with all the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. To take in a traditional Irish pub night complete with Celtic and pipe band music, visit The ACT on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Our View
Minimum quite medium The new minimum wage raise coming into effect in B.C. in September seems pretty chintzy at first blush. Twenty cents per hour works out to a meagre $8 per week – a whopping $416 for an entire year – if you have a full time job at minimum wage, that is. Premier Christy Clark’s promise to announce new minimum wage hikes on April 1 each year to come into effect each September is good for businesses – especially those already balking at 20 cents per hour – that need time to prepare, but the inflation-indexed hikes are starting from a below-subsistence level, and thus are guaranteed to stay there. On the other hand, B.C.’s new minimum wage, as cheap as it may seem to some, might actually be viewed as reasonable, from other perspectives. Once our lowest paid workers are pegged at $10.45 per hour (except for the exceptions – “servers” legally receive as little as $9 per hour from their masters, and the weird “training” wage also belies the word “minimum”), this province will be close to the average across Canada. From a global perspective, Canada’s minimum wage, at about 45 per cent of the country’s median wage, ranks 10th among the world’s developed nations, well behind France’s 60 per cent, but well ahead of America’s 38 per cent. Back to Canada: Ontario and Nunavut currently lead the minimum wage pack at $11, although like B.C., Ontario has exceptions that illogically are actually below minimum, while Manitoba has a $10.70 minimum, but with some industry-specific caveats for minimums well above $30 per hour. B.C.’s minimum wage might not be so bad, after all – but there’s one thing left to consider: much of B.C.’s workforce lives in one of the country’s most expensive regions, and an extra $8 a week doesn’t go a long way to supporting a family in Metro Vancouver. – B.G.

We are not automatons: most have critical thinking, all have free will and can choose what to believe or discard. Christ did not leave room for interpretation. His words are as straightforward and fresh today as they were 2,000 years ago: “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” “Whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” “Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” “Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you, do not turn away.” The trouble begins when we use our own moral gauge to put a modern spin on them. Can we agree all the different sects interpretations, divisions, sectarian violence, wars, terrorism, etc., would cease if these adages were followed? Cherryl Katnich, Maple Ridge

Yes helps vulnerable
Dear Editor, Better public transit benefits our most vulnerable. You could give back time to a low-income working mom who commutes two to three hours every day, or you could keep a senior connected by making it easier for them to get around by voting Yes for transit. High housing costs mean lower-income families are moving away from Vancouver, often resulting in longer commute times. Parents are spending less time with their children. When parents do better, their children do better. For seniors, there are many barriers to getting around. Transit is a lifeline. About one in four seniors lives alone. With limited transportation options, seniors risk becoming shut-ins. Loneliness has been shown to be as dangerous as smoking. Murano
A great result from Nissan’s craftspeople BY BRENDAN McALEER
brendanmcaleer@gmail.com • Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer
A half-dozen islets joined to Venice by an umbilical cord made of bridges, the region of Murano is best-known for narrow streets and expert glass-makers. It’s a place of brittle beauty, a gathering of craftsmen who are expert in creating crystalline excellence. In other words: a bit of an odd place to name a mainstream crossover after. But perhaps said vehicle isn’t so middle of the road. Meet the new Nissan Murano, totally redesigned for the 2015 model year. Yes, it has underpinnings shared with the seven-seater Pathfinder, a Continuously Variable Transmission, and a workaday V6. No, it isn’t all that ordinary. I mean, just look at it!
Design
Every manufacturer has its own design language, and Nissan’s current efforts could well be called “Say What Now?” Never mind the plump little dumpling that bowed in 2003 with a chrome-laden grin, this new one’s all edges and angles, sharp details and creased surfaces. It looks like somebody pressed Pause halfway through the previous generation transforming it into a space-robot. The front end is dominated by a huge V-shaped grille bearing the Nissan badge. On either side of this, the L-shaped headlights appear to be smearing down the sides of the vehicle with eye-watering speed. The front and rear haunches are hunched and muscular, and the roof appears to be floating in space out back thanks to a blacked-out C-pillar. Walking around to the back is a surprise, simply because it’s so conventional by comparison: LED-ringed taillights, but otherwise reserved. If you’re looking for a dollop of style for your everyday driver, the Murano gives you two-scoops of Japanese gelato and then smothers that in walnut fudge sauce. It’s nutty, and I like it.
Environment
Inside, my Platinum-trim tester seemed to beg the question, “So why exactly would you consider an Infiniti?” The Murano has always felt like its top-level editions overlapped heavily with Nissan’s luxury car wing, and this one is no different.
Designed for five passengers only – and the better for it – the Murano provides a comfortable place to be for all passengers. Usually, nattering on about collaborations with NASA and the like can be strictly marketing mumbo-jumbo, but the so-called “zerogravity” seats are actually quite excellent. Mind you, the older versions of the car were similarly cushy.
LOSS UP TO
18,000*
$
The Murano is available in both front- and all-wheeldrive versions, with the basic model front-drive only, and the top two trims all-wheel only. Power comes from a familiar 3.5L V6 making 260hp at 6000rpm and 240lb/ft at 4400rpm.
CANADA’S BEST SELLING VEHICLE!!
Official ratings for all-wheel-drive models are very good and 11.2L/100kms city and 8.3L/100kms highway. Frontwheel-drive saves nearly nothing (just 0.2L/100kms on the highway), so it’s worth springing for the AWD version for better traction and resale down the line.
The only available transmission is Nissan’s Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), something the first Murano championed as a unique feature for both smoothing out the ride and improving fuel-economy. These days the only Nissan with a non-CVT transmission is either going to be a sportscar or a truck, and other manufacturers like Subaru have also adopted the technology range wide.
Green Light
Comfortable seats; smooth ride; feature-packed base model; high-tech top models
Stop Sign
The main impression of the Murano’s V6-and-CVT combination is no impression at all. This is a very unobtrusive setup, with noise and vibration well damped down. It’s not as noiseless as an all-electric Leaf or anything, but this crossover is certainly among the quietest machines in Nissan’s range.
BRAND NEW
ON
So why should you move up the range? Well, the Platinum spec is crammed full of tech. All four seating positions are heated and the fronts are cooled as well, daytime running lights are LEDs, you get Nissan’s excellent 360-degree camera system, and there’s a sonorous BOSE audio system with eleven speakers and dual subwoofers.
Performance
IS YOUR 20 2014 F-150 GAIN!
SAVE
Features
Everything that might be expected is standard on the Murano, from Bluetooth to heated seats. Less expected, perhaps, is the inclusion of standard satellite navigation on the basic front-wheel-drive S model.
Cargo room is very good, slightly ahead of the Ford Edge and Toyota Venza. Naturally, the seats all fold flat, so if this is your antiquing transportation, there’s more than enough room for that colossal armoire (full confession: I’m not really sure what an armoire actually is).
Styling can be polarizing; not much sporting performance; some interior plastics don’t match overall upscale feel
The Checkered Flag
Beautiful without being brittle, comfortable without being uninteresting, high-tech without being confusing.

WEST COAST FORD LINCOLN HAS SECURED A SPECIAL PURCHASE OF AN ADDITIONAL
FROM ALBERTA DEALERS!
It’s not particularly sporty, but instead competent and polished. All-wheel-drive versions of this comfy crossover would make the ideal vehicle for apres-ski: simply lower your aching quads into the seat, dial up the active cruise-control and slide on down the Sea-to-Sky highway without effort. A note: if you do intend to participate in winter sports with your Murano, 18” wheels will clear the brakes, and make for a less-expensive set of snow tires.
The central screen is eight inches in diameter, and most touchscreen duties are backed up by buttons. Acura could take note here at how relatively unfussy Nissan has managed to make their control layout. A quite large information display between the gauges supplements the dash display.
Alberta’s
ECONOMIC IC
The steering is light and effortless, and even though this Platinum version comes with large, 20” alloys, the suspension was quite composed. Very rough pavement might unsettle things a little, but for day-to-day driving, the Murano makes for a good wafter.

Orange County tournament
Water polo players hit California
A number of local athletes made a splash at a tournament in the Sunshine State this past weekend. by Eric Zimmer
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
The Fraser Valley Water Polo Club took part in the 12th annual Turbo Orange County Cup this past weekend. And Maple Ridge players played a big part in the club’s top results. The U12 boys team, which included local players Alexander Preocanin, Jordan Novota, Jack Hayhoe, and Antonio Martins finished in second place in the silver division, going 3-1 in tournament play, under the watch of local coach Tim Torres. The only loss for the team was a one-goal game against SoCal Gold who finished first in the tournament. The U14 girls team,
which included local players Ellen Hayhoe and Brynn Jonatschick, finished fourth in the gold division, dropping the third place game to Newport by a score of 18-9. Maple Ridge goalie Alex Rosec played a lead role on the U16 girls team. She was accompanied by a trio of homegrown drivers made up of Yuri Cowie, Ava Morrant, Katarina Preocanin. Cowie is a shooter, while both Morrant and Preocanin are former provincial swim champions with the Haney Neptunes. The team went 3-1 as well. The U16 boys finished in ninth place under the watch of local coach Cole Wagner (who is also a

The competition was the first away from home for many members, noted Quantum’s Monika Gulyas. “They had a great time staying in a hotel together, bonding, competing, and cheering each other on.” First-year competitor Destiny Christensen brought home a gold medal in the trampoline,
while tumblers Paige Hoffert, Makayla Tabb, and Madyson Dunster placed first in their respective categories. In her first tumbling competition, Teagan Kuznak scored fifth place. “All of the athletes put on an incredible performance and worked very hard this past weekend,” said Gulyas. There were a number of tries from a variety of players, including Kyle Pollard (his first for the Bruins), Paul Stanfield, Miller Thind, Josh Ladd, and Connor Epp. The win was the result of “an excellent team effort,” said the Bruins’ Sam McCullough.
