HOMELESSNESS

Plan for Cliff Avenue camp still in the works Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read provided an update on the City’s homelessness task force Tuesday at City hall. COLE WAGNER editorial@mrtimes.com

Tension between residents of Cliff Avenue and the local street population, who have set up camp along the street reached a boiling point Tuesday, but the City has yet to decide on a plan to deal with the still-expanding camp. Prior to an 8 p.m. meeting at City hall – where mayor Nicole Read was to give an update on the work of her homelessness solutions task force – a crowd of Cliff Avenue residents were involved in a heated confrontation with a few of the representatives from the temporary camp. Residents are fed up with the temporary camp, which has expanded from around 30 people, to over 60 as of this week according to some estimates. But there are no easy solutions, said Read in her presentation to council. And while the council and the mayor expressed their sympathy during the meeting to Cliff Avenue residents, the mayor remained committed to the stance that simply moving a camp from place to place would only be a temporary solution. “It’s very important to provide a lasting and meaningful solution, instead of having bylaw moving people in the morning only to return at night,” said Read. But while many residents of Cliff Avenue were in attendance last night seeking a solution to the issue at hand, Read’s presentation was focused more on the long term plans for the task force.

Mounties paid a visit to the camp on Cliff Avenue Wednesday afternoon. Troy Landreville/TIMES

Meanwhile, Councillor Bob Masse had a recent meeting with Mike Murray, executive assistant to Randy Kamp, regarding issues in transition housing being available in Maple Ridge. Coun. Gordy Robson, who works alongside Masse on the task force, sympathized with the residents of Cliff Avenue, and assured those in attendance that the work of the task force was designed to have an immediate effect on the problem. “We’re gonna have this on the ground in a week, or two weeks, and if we don’t feel the difference in a few days or weeks, it’s something we’re going to change,” said Robson. Read echoed Robson’s comments, stating that if change wasn’t felt within the first week, the task force wouldn’t be afraid to “pivot and change direction.”

PROTEST

Rally opposing medical marijuana facility goes Friday Those involved in Friday’s protest in Whonnock oppose extensive agricultural land use near their homes. A “high noon” protest is on the books for this Friday in Whonnock. An organized rally has been planned for May 22 at noon, against the licensing of an industrial scale medical marijuana facility proposed for 9860 272nd Street.

> ONLINE EXTRAS

The facility is a 97,000 square foot greenhouse, plus a 16,000 square foot production/storage building, according to organizers of the rally. According to the website, WhonnockGrowOp.com, the residents are not against medical marijuana, but are “against intensive agricultural land use next to our homes, in an area where our water is a constant concern.” Also stated on the website: “The quiet rural area of West Whonnock is about to be destroyed by an industrial land use approved by

the Federal Government and The Agricultural Land Commission of BC, without any warning to residents. The blatant dishonesty of the developer has kept locals in the dark for over six months, despite repeated attempts to obtain information regarding what is being built.” The residents say they are concerned about their wells running dry and the safety of their community, in addition to environmental impact and decreasing property values. INTERNATIONAL WORK

Pitt dentist lends skills to Peruvian people Preet Bhatti spent a week in Lima, Peru, helping impoverished children and adults. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com

A

trip to the dentist isn’t something most people look forward to, but in a first world country such as Canada, it’s a somewhat necessary evil for their dental and overall health. In a developing country like Peru, a dentist visit can be life altering when it comes to patients’ well being and, especially, comfort moving forward. This is where a Pitt Meadows dentist and his colleagues from around the world come into play. On April 20, Preet Bhatti from Pitt Meadows Dental returned from a mission trip to Peru’s capital of Lima, where he performed much-needed dental work on residents who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford such care. While this was the third such mission trip through Kindness In Action (www.kindnessinaction. ca) for the 39-year-old Bhatti, born and raised in Maple Ridge, it was his first to Peru. He did similar dentistry work with the

organization in Guatemala in 2009 and Costa Rica in 2012. “They organize about a dozen trips every year,” Bhatti said. “It’s a dentistry-focused organization. Usually, there’ll be some dentists, some dental assistants, some dental hygienists and they’ll have non-dental volunteers, as well.” All three trips were positive experiences for Bhatti. “You’re helping others with a specialized skill set that not everyone else has,” Bhatti said. Bhatti said he made a donation to Kindness In Action and the charity in turn arranged for his flight and accommodations. In Peru, Bhatti noted that he did “a lot” of extractions along with some basic dentistry work for a week in April. “I’d say more extractions than fillings,” Bhatti added. he Kindness In Action team was headquartered in a youth centre in Lima, which on top of being the capital is also the largest city in Peru. The volunteers stayed about an hour away from the centre, where, Bhatti said, “the poor-

T

est of the poor” children would come after school for tutoring and food. “It’s really for people who can’t afford it all,” Bhatti said, about those he treated. “It’s in a rough part of the city, as well.” Bhatti found that out when he stepped outside the centre to take photos. A security guard manning the front door strongly suggested Bhatti go back inside for his own safety. any of the extractions Bhatti did were on children, a few of whom needed 80 per cent of their teeth pulled because they were beyond repair. “It seemed as though there was a high consumption of pop, and little dental knowledge,” Bhatti said. Luckily for most of the children, it was their baby teeth being extracted, but Bhatti pointed out, “We were extracting adult teeth on kids, as well.” “It’s hard seeing these kids in this shape,” Bhatti said. “Here [in Canada] we’re trying to take a proactive approach; we’re trying to educate parents early.” Bhatti communicated to patients through volunteer translators, making things easier for

him, but it was still difficult trying to speak with children as freely as he’d like to, to put them more at ease. n one case, a young girl with severe cerebral palsy and confined to a wheelchair had to be carried up three flights of stairs to see Bhatti. After he had frozen her and completed the extractions in one corner of her mouth, Bhatti stopped and asked if he should continue with the remaining extractions. “Her mouth was in bad shape with multiple abscessed teeth,” Bhatti said. “We had no other choice but to restrain her while we worked as she had no understanding of what we were doing. This was emotionally difficult

as we strive to make every child as comfortable as possible back home, but here we had to put comfort secondary to the greater good of the patient.” Bhatti was one of the more experienced dentists on site, so he and another dentist did screenings, determining the best way to help each patient. Reflecting on the trip, it was a satisfying experience for both Bhatti and his patients. “You can tell people are always very appreciative of the work that you’ve done for them,” Bhatti said. “They want to give you a hug or they want to shake your hand in appreciation, especially the adults. You feel good about the work that you are doing for these people.”

No glamour in gangs

I

t’s not been a good year for gang activity. At least two gangs, each apparently chock full of armed, reckless young men, have been taking pot shots at one another’s members for weeks. Over a 10-week period, there were 27 shootings in Surrey and nearby North Delta. It will be welcome news to locals that another 100 RCMP officers have been approved by the federal government. More police means faster response times, more investigators, and hopefully quicker arrests of the most dangerous bad guys. But more important in the long term will be the $3.4 million announced by the federal government to educate kids away from joining gangs. Up to 400 children, aged 11 to 19 who are considered vulnerable to joining gangs, will be the targets of the program. Perhaps the new initiative could be expanded to other areas around the Lower Mainland, the province, and the country as a whole. The truth is probably one of the best ways of reaching kids. The average drug dealer, for example, can make less than minimum wage. Studies in the 1990s showed that drug dealers and gang members just don’t make that much cash, with most gang members living at home with their parents. Then there’s the danger aspect. It’s not just the chance of dying – that can have a mystique for many aggressive young men. It’s the chance of getting a bullet that severs your spine, lodges in your skull and leaves you with brain damage, or just slices through internal organs, leaving the victim with chronic pain and years of operations. If you’re very lucky, you might add a prison term to that list of fun gang facts. Gang life in the movies looks grim and gritty, but glamourous. Gang life in the real world often ends in a hospital bed, a prison cell, a grave – or maybe worst of all, still living at home, with no skills, a criminal record, and wishing like crazy you’d applied to work at that fast food place rather than becoming a gangster. – M.C

Hovering over all of these closed stores, like a dark cloud, is Amazon. What Walmart is to brick and mortar, Amazon is to online shopping. And then some. Their strategy is not unlike that of the Borg, from Star Trek. They will assimilate your retail experience. The mall sells clothes? So will Amazon. Pet food? Sure. DVDs? Electronics? Furniture? Fresh groceries? Yes, increasingly. Does it cost more to get some of these things from Amazon? Well, yeah. But there are costs to everything. When you go to a mall, the cost is spending time at the mall. I’m not a shopper by nature. The only stores I ever liked going to were bookstores. Now there are bookstores online. I can go there at midnight. I can browse titles in my pyjamas, from my couch. No screaming toddlers. No long lines. No finding a parking spot. Fine for books, right, but what about clothing? Surely that’s immune to e-commerce. Well, there are online retailers

working on that, too. High end outlets will ship you all kinds of clothes, and their websites have tutorials on how to get your measurements exact. On the low end, if you buy tube socks in plastic bags at the store, what difference does ordering online make? The high and low end retailers are steadily eating their way towards the middle. Eventually, this is going to kill off some individual retailers, whether big box or specialty or discount. And there will be nothing in the physical world to replace the stores, because those shoppers are gone. That’s when the malls are going to be in real trouble. Some people love to shop. The mall, for them, is a social place. here are bargain hunters who love checking for discounts. But just as Walmart killed off plenty of department stores, Amazon is gunning for the shopping mall. And the online sellers have lots of ammo. Read Bob Groeneveld’s Odd Thoughts column online this week at mrtimes.com

Letters Pot operations impact neighbours MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS TIMES

Dear Editor,

Health Canada has publicly stated that they “will exercise the highest level of due diligence on all applications to produce Medical Marijuana.” As a homeowner in the Whonnock area, I would like to take this opportunity to respond to this statement. To date, there has been a great deal of opposition to the proposed industrial-scale medical marijuana greenhouse (approximately 97,000 square foot) at 272nd Street and Bell Avenue but I have recently learned that there was also a second application proposed for Whonnock. The company, My Marijuana Canada Inc., submitted an application to Health Canada for a medical marijuana greenhouse for property located at 26521 Lougheed Hwy. This site is just a few kilometres west of Tantalus Lab’s proposed operation. From the documents I reviewed, they had received approval from the city to build a 14,000 square foot production facility and their future plans included the construction of a 120,000 square foot greenhouse. This proposed greenhouse is larger than Tantalus Labs and completely dependent (again) on well water for irrigation. The company also stated that they were in stage four of the application review process with Health Canada. We can not look at these industrial-scale greenhouse applications in isolation. We have to manage our groundwater resources wisely. There is a cumulative effect here. There are approximately 450 plus homeowners and livestock farmers who depend on this low productivity, highly vulnerable aquifer. The water shortages we experience are well known and have plagued the communities of Thornhill and Whonnock for years. There are many residents who must haul water or have it delivered during extended dry periods. Even those who have deep drilled wells can experience problems with their water levels. Does Health Canada not hire staff who have

expertise in planning, engineering and hydrology to review these applications? Marijuana production requires a great deal more water than other crops. Health Canada needs to develop some guidelines and regulations for these massive greenhouse facilities. They also need to take steps to ensure that there is sufficient infrastructure in place to support these operations. Imagine a developer submitting an application to build homes without sufficient water to service them and stating: “Don’t worry I will have water delivered.” If you do the calculations you will realize that it is impossible, as well absurd, to have these massive facilities truck in water in an attempt to deal with their huge shortfall. In addition to tapping into the aquifer, industrial-scale greenhouses will be capturing and diverting all surface water to large cisterns. This reduces the amount of groundwater recharge. Closed system greenhouses are also permitted 75 per cent lot coverage and this dramatically increases areas of impervious surface. Another fact that seems to be overlooked by staff when processing these applications. Thankfully, My Marijuana Canada Inc. have been unsuccessful in obtaining sufficient financial backing and appear to have aborted their plans. The point is there will be others. Please ask the tough questions, the right questions and thoroughly review these applications. If staff are overwhelmed and lack expertise hire more. This is a future billion dollar industry. These medical marijuana companies can afford to purchase land in areas that have sufficient infrastructure to support them. We can afford to have competent and knowledgeable staff oversee these applications. To the greater community at large, please support your neighbours to the east and join us at our High Noon Protest at 272nd and Bell Avenue at noon this Friday, May 22. This is an issue that will eventually affect all of us.

This letter is in follow up to our earlier letters concerning Westview Park. We presented a petition that was heard by Maple Ridge Council on May 14, with an overwhelming majority of residents who live in the Westview area, who signed the petition, saying that they do not want a dog park there. Geoff Mallory, manager of parks and open space, presented area residents feed back from an open house that he held on April 28, 2014. The feedback from the majority of residents from that was that they do not want a dog park there. So what happened at the Council meeting? Council did what

they wanted anyway, albeit another six month “trial” period for the park to see if the park would stay. Turning a beautiful park into a cesspool

storm that wreaked havoc in Stanley Park. For five months it was dried, and then in November 2010 the pole was blessed and the carving began. All creative ideas for the pole came from Thomas Haney Secondary students and were turned into a design by artist and cultural advisor Quentin Harris. Master carver Huuyaah from Squamish First Nation, along with his son, Simon Baker, took over to guide the carving of the pole to completion. Special guests at the unveil-

ing ceremony and pole blessing included Colleen Pierre from Katzie First Nation; Huuyah; Joanne Foot from the Fraser River All Nations Aboriginal Society; Metis jigger and pow wow dancer Madelaine McCallum; actor/speaker Nathaniel Arcand, who is an honourary elder with Pikani First Nation; Colleen Hannah, the Ministry of Education’s enhancement agreement coordinator; School District 42 Aboriginal Education principal Ron Lanzarotta; school trustee Dave Rempel; and district Aboriginal Education staff.

For most 17-yearolds around Maple Ridge, mid-May usually signals the impending end of school, and the countdown towards walking across the stage at a graduation ceremony. But Erik Bruendl is not your average 17-year-old – in fact, school is the last thing on Bruendl’s mind this week, as he prepares for a week of performances with Coastal City Ballet, a professional company debuting their spring production of Cinderella. “Normally, I go to school in the morning, at noon I leave, and I train 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on average,” said Bruendl. “This week though, I’ve only been to school one day.” Bruendl, who start-

Maple Ridge’s Erik Bruendl performs in Cinderella. ed his ballet career with the Warren Performing Arts school of dance in Pitt Meadows, now dances with the Pacific Dance Arts academy in Vancouver. Through Pacific Dance Arts, Bruendl was offered the opportunity to dance with the professional company, Coastal City Ballet, as they prepared a brand new production this spring: Cinderella. “It’s a new production from scratch – even professional dancers don’t get a chance to be a part of a full length, brand new classical production,” said Bruendl, meaning he will be the first to dance his role on stage – ever.

A new production, with all new choreography, is somewhat of a rarity in the ballet scene, especially in B.C., explained the dancer. “I’m the youngest male dancer in the production, but it’s been good. It’s been nice to have something so big and complex to be a part of,” said Bruendl. Cinderella debuted on May 15 in North Vancouver at the Centennial Theatre. Another performance takes place on May 30 in Surrey, at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88th Ave. The show starts at 4 p.m., and tickets are available by calling 604-501-5566.

No shame in sharing stories A local group supports people with dementia. RONDA PAYNE editorial@mrtimes.com

Everyone has a forgetful moment now and then, but there is a fear that lurks behind every joke about the misplaced keys or forgotten phone numbers. That fear is dementia and one Maple Ridge woman is doing her part to make sure the fear is lessened by way of support, education, and understanding. Myrna Norman has started the local chapter of the Purple Angel Memory Cafe. “We are about creating an education and social group for those with dementia, caregivers, or any interested parties,” said

Norman. Dementia is often misunderstood both in what it is, and what it means. Dementia is the broad parent category of diseases causing declining mental functions. Dementia may also impact speech, language, and emotion. The most common condition under the dementia umbrella is Alzheimer’s disease When Norman was diagnosed with dementia, she spent a lot of time on the internet trying to come to grips with the disease. “We get so sad because we’ve been diagnosed with some terrible disease.” That was her first step in the process – sadness. She then progressed to being filled with questions and wondering why she should be afflicted.

The Citizen’s Representative Committee, a branch of the newly created City task force on open government, will host two sessions this spring, seeking input from residents. Open government can tend to be a broad topic, said committee chair Katherine Wagner, but issues with accountability and communication in municipal government are widespread. “People often feel – rightly or wrongly – that they hear about things too late, and that they’ve been left out of the process,” said Wagner. Hooper guessed closest in a jelly bean count, only two beans off the 2,547 in the jar. That guess won her – and more importantly her two grandchidren – the cedar-clad house. ReMax owner Rainer Weininger (inside) and realtor Frank Budd delivered the home – that came complete with doorbell and portable phone. Roxanne Hooper/TIMES

RUN FOR GOOD

Unconcious woman saved Hospice hosts event A woman was

rescued near a popular hiking area.

A backwoods camper was airlifted out of Golden Ears Provincial Park early this past weekend, unconscious after falling in a boulder field near Alder Flats more than an hour before sunrise. The 35-year-old woman was part of a group of about a dozen who have been camping up in Alder Flats every May long weekend for the past 20 years, explained Rick Laing, manager of the Ridge Meadows Search & Rescue team. It’s unclear why anyone was on the boulder field so early in the morning, Laing said, but he noted the call for help came in at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, May 16 -- about a half

hour after the fall. Local rescuers have been called to that area a few times over the past few years, to rescue people who slip and fall on the large, often slick boulders located south of the campgrounds, Laing explained. It’s believed the woman fell about three metres, “suffering significant head trauma and loss of consciousness,” he said. Someone witnessed her fall, and a member of her group immediately hoofed it back down the West Canyon Trail to the Gold Creek Lookout where they could get a cell signal to call for help. In the meantime, another member of the group at the wilderness campground had Level 2 first aid and knew not to move her, but was able to stabilize her until rescuers

Lindsey Willis has participated in the main fundraiser for the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society (where Willis works) every year since 2009. That fundraiser is the upcoming Vistas 10 km run/ 5 km walk on Sunday, May 31. “I felt the importance as a staff member to represent our team,” she said. This year, she said, as she takes her place at the starting line, she will “look at the people around me differently. I will wonder what their story is, why they have chosen to run, who they may be running for.” Willis has her own story of why she runs. “The Vistas run was on Mother’s Day in 2012,” she recalled. “My husband, and our children ran with his mom and dad and family. My mother-inlaw was especially was concerned with getting healthy. She walked with conviction as her grand-

daughters chased her with bouquets of flowers picked along the Kanaka Creek route.” Willis’ recollections of the run in 2013 are cloudy. “Our family ran, but this year without our mom,” Willis explained. “She had recently been diagnosed with a life-limiting cancer, and was deep in treatment,” she said. “As we approached the start line together, the run became something else for us, a run of fear and anxiety, trying to run as far away from what our family was going through, while at the same time, running as hard as we could towards that hope which was quickly fading. We were still trying to process everything when my husband’s mom, our kids’ Oma, and my good friend died that summer surrounded by only love, in McKenney Creek hospice. Willis’ story is just one of a number of stories and Ridge Meadows Hospice is encouraging everyone to come out and participate. The event takes place at Kanaka Creek Park. Exceptionally warm weather and prolonged sunshine this time of year is usually cause for people to celebrate but not for pets. Usually, nice weather is a sign that an extra trip down the dykes with Fido, or a walk along Alouette Lake with the pooch might be in order. But the Maple Ridge SPCA warns that unscheduled trips with dogs could end up deadly, if pets are left in the car. “Even parked in the shade, with the windows rolled down, the car heats up extremely quickly,” said Jenn Stack, director of the Maple Ridge SPCA. Stack said the frequency of dog-in-car tips from the public has already started to pick up – which is a good thing for dogs, but a time consuming piece of business for the local animal shelter. “We get a ton of calls – which can lead to us running around dealing with hot dog cases, instead of cruelty cases,” said Stack. That said, Stack doesn’t want to discourage vigilant residents

from reporting cases of dogs in cars to the SPCA. Should you spot a dog left in a car when the animal could overheat, a call to the animal cruelty hotline (1-855-6227722) is generally the best course of action, said Stack. The SPCA will contact the closest possible shelter, which will come directly to the car itself, and assess how much danger the dog is in. Even in the worst cases, Stack recommends waiting for the SPCA to arrive, rather than confronting an owner directly. “Assess what the dog’s situation is like – if the dog is panting and trying to get out, or if the dog is lying down and unresponsive,” said Stack. “Be exact with the location of the vehicle, and the licence plate,” she added. Staying with the vehicle is also helpful for responders. Most of the time, the SPCA will simply wait for the owner to come to the vehicle, and explain the potential dangers of leaving pets in hot cars, said Stack. But if the situation looks dire – especially if the animal inside the vehicle is unresponsive – the SPCA responders can call the police. “We have a device that can monitor the temperature inside the vehicle – if it’s at a certain point, the police can smash the

window,” noted Stack. Stack added that the majority of the time, owners are being negligent instead of intentionally cruel to their pets – but she stressed that the warm days in spring and summer might prompt a tough decision about leaving pets at home for the day. “Take your dog for a long walk in the morning, or a run to tire them out for the afternoon,” Stack suggested, instead of bringing the dogs along for the afternoon errands. Leave pets with a toy or a game when leaving the house in the afternoon, recommended Stack. For dogs that aren’t ready to be left with the run of the house for an afternoon, Stack suggested kennel training – not the most stimulating activity on a hot day, but safer than leaving pets in the car. “Five minutes outside can turn into 10 or 15 if there is a line in the store, or some other delay,” said Stack. And leashing pets outside the store isn’t a healthy alternative to leaving them in the car, added Stack. Dogs can bite through fabric leashes, or hurt their teeth on metal chains, and the sun’s constant change in position makes it tough to find a shady spot for Fido.

KATIE’S PLACE HANNIGAN is a nice older boy who was found living under someone’s shed. His teeth were broken, his fur was matted, his ears were dirty, and it didn’t look like anyone was feeding him. He is a loving boy who’s had a hard life. He is ok with the other cats in his pen and he definitely loves humans. He will never say “no” to a treat or a pet. He still has many years ahead of him. Hannigan was obviously someone’s pet at some point, we are not sure how long he’s been on his own, but he is obviously willing to forgive humans and shower us with love.

FIGARO is about eight years old but you would never guess that by looking at him. He is adorable, and has a laid back personality. Figaro lived as a stray and was fed by the same person for five years. Figaro likes to be outside, keeps to himself, and doesn’t mind the other cats. Figaro is not needy, or an attention hoarder. We have learned that Figaro has diabetes and we now have it under control. He is super easy to medicate and because of his health we would be happy to place him in a home as a permanent foster. So you don’t need to worry about the costs.

DINAH is a sweet, quiet, fluffy, soft, little girl. She is shy but craves attention. If you approach her slowly and offer pets and chin scritches you’ll hear a soft sweet purrrrrr in return. Dinah keeps to herself and does not really interact with the other cats, so we figure when she does go into a home she would probably prefer to be the one and only. Dinah likes to sit off to the side and watch the goings on around her. Sometimes all you can see is her big eyes staring out form a shelf or a hidey hole. Dinah needs a quiet home and a gentle hand.

VASHTI is about one. She was abandoned by her owners when they moved in a house slated for demolition. The poor girl must have been so confused. Watching as her family packed up, expecting to be taken along, only to find herself alone in the house and no one coming back for her. Vashti is young, pretty, friendly, and very playful. She can be a dominant cat so she will need to go into a home with cats that can hold their own. Vashti gets along with the cats in her pen but she is a feisty little imp and can be too much for an older or a shy cat.

Schools help sprout new gardens A community garden program expands to three new schools this year. COLE WAGNER editorial@mrtimes.com

Just like a seedling, sometimes it takes a little time for a program to grow – but when it starts sprouting, it can quickly become something much larger than where it started. Last year, two schools participated in the “More Peas, Please!” (MPP) program, led by Leanne Koehnn and Richard Farrance. The program was about creating family gardens at the homes of families with young children, to give the kids

a chance to see where their food comes from, and earn a couple tasty veggies in the process, said Koehnn. While the program started at Hammond and Glenwood Elementary, “More Peas, Please!” is expanding this year, with a host of new “champions” at three more elementary schools around Maple Ridge. The “champions” are parent volunteers, responsible for helping to create starter gardens at a family’s Kenzie’s garden was one of 12 plots created home. in last year’s ‘More Peas, Please!’ program. “It only takes about an hour and a Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. half to dig the garden,” said Koehnn. CAMPAIGN OF CARING

Nicolas nation seeking support Community continues to rally around toddler. Nicolas Nation is gaining momentum. Two-and-a-halfyear-old Nicolas Schwuchow has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1, a terminal and degenerative disease that causes weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles in infants and children.

SMA, a disease that affects one in 6,000 people, eventually impacts every muscle in the body, hindering the ability to walk, stand, sit, eat, breathe, and swallow. The mind always remains unaffected and children with SMA are bright, sensitive, and playful. Moving forward, Nicolas’s support system goes beyond his immediate family that includes Rolf, Petra, and four-year-old “Izzy.” Many friends have

stepped in to help create the “A Boy Named Nicolas” Campaign, which raises muchneeded funds to assist the family with providing Nicolas with the opportunity to live a normal life. This includes an above ground pool for water therapy and major modifications to the house that the family lives in. Enter Nicolas Nation, a group of professionals and volunteers rallying the community, including local suppliers,

tradespersons, and volunteers to make the renos happen. “We have received incredible support from Nicolas Nation, family members and a community that has rallied behind this campaign” Nicolas’s father Rolf said. “Asking for help is an incredibly hard thing to do, but without assistance from organizations and the community there is absolutely no way we would be where we are today.” A Boy Named

Nicolas Campaign has raised more than $51,000, and Nicolas Nation plans to be the driving force behind keeping Nicolas on his journey. Nicolas is currently being fitted for his power chair, which costs in excess $30,000. Major in-home renovations are also in the final planning stage, with overall project costs being estimated above the $300,000. Sleep apnea? Trouble falling asleep?

University of Toronto professor states that 69% of adults have sleeping problems. Bad sleep reduces physical and creative energy all next day. Almost all families are affected. Sleep apnea may cause high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks and irregular heart beats. Can be very destructive in relationships. Hundreds of true testimonials on the Bell website from people like you. Real people wrote: æI really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH. æSleep #23 NPN 80027595 apnea capsules worked first night. For 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS. æFor 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS. æIt is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine anymore. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

MLA recall effort continues Deadline for recall campaign is June 15. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com

A campaign to recall Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Rick Moyer/TIMES Dalton is Martin Dmitrieff is part of the “going really Marc Dalton recall campaign. well,” according to campaigner Mel Harris. “We have a huge volunteer base that’s really committed to working hard,” she said. “We’ve got canvassers out pounding the pavement every day, and we’ve had really positive reactions from the community, in both Maple Ridge and Mission.” Harris added that “people are really waking up and wanting a better government.” At this point, Harris remains confident in the campaign. “I think it’s already seeing some success,” she said. “We have a ways to go, but we are having success, in large part due to the number of people we have out collecting signatures.” For his part, Dalton isn’t speculating on what may or may not happen with the campaign. “I know I’m focusing on my work, which is working with my constituents,” he has said in the past. And whether or not the recall campaign will succeed, Dalton said it’s something that’s out of his hands. “I have to focus on my job, which is serving my constituents, and I’m doing that.”

LACROSSE

Senior A Burrards get set for new season ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com

A new acquisition by the Maple Ridge Burrards Senior A lacrosse team will add some “needed depth” to the team’s offense, said coach Chris Gill. That new player comes in the form of rookie offensive leftie Connor Goodwin: A 21-year-old lacrosse player from New Westminster. Goodwin was a top draft pick this year, and Gill expects the new player will “definitely improve our offence.” And this Sunday, May 24, Goodwin and the rest of the Burrards will have the chance to put those expectations into play, as the team kicks things off with their season home opener at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. “I’m excited,” said Goodwin. “I actually got called up to play with them a couple times last year, so I was familiar with Gill and familiar with the team. They’re a great group of guys.” Goodwin had the chance to play with the team as a result of some “injury troubles” on the team, Gill explained. “We have another player [Dan Taylor] from Alberta coming as well. He is a very good offensive player. The two of them played together last year. Hopefully they will have some nice chemistry,” he added. Outside of lacrosse, Goodwin is a fourth year engineering student at McGill university, and plays lacrosse for the school as well. “I really enjoy the sport, it’s a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s exciting, it’s fast-paced, and it’s entertaining to play.” And though he’s played a variety of

> SPORTS EXTRAS

other sports in his life, Goodwin has always “kind of gravitated back towards lacrosse because it’s what I was most familiar with, and what I got the most enjoyment out of.” As for the Burrads, like most teams in the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) this time of year is exciting, but “also a bit difficult to get your best players out on a regular basis,” said Gill. “We have guys at school in the USA and others playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL.) This year’s training camp was especially tricky because “we had 11 NLL players and four players away at school,” Gill said. However, heading into this Sunday’s game, the team will have “most players available and ready to go.” Both Gill and Goodwin are hoping to build on the positive results of last year. “They (the Burrards) did pretty well last year, and it’s the same group of guys,” said Goodwin. “It should be a good year, and I’d love to do well.” Gill echoed these sentiments. “Last season was very encouraging,” he said. “We proved that we can compete and be a top team in this league.” But it was a year of lessons as well. “We also learned that we still have a long way to go to get to the next level. It was a great learning experience for this group,” said the coach. The team needs to be hungry and ready to work every night if they want to see success, Gill added. He expects the difference between first and second place, or even fourth and fifth place will be very close as the season progresses. “Every team has gotten better and we all want the same outcome. It’s going to be a competitive season,” he said. The action gets underway at 6:45 p.m. when the Burrards take on the Burnaby Lakers. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, and $5 for kids. For more information, visit www.burrards.ca.

addling along the placid waters of the Alouette River in Pitt Meadows, as a gentle breeze blows in your face on a partly sunny Thursday – it’s a nice way to spend your school day. Under the tutelage of instructors Ben Muench and Brian Hammer, 88 students with the Maple Ridge Environmental School Project are spending their Thursdays navigating dragon boats and individual boats along the water near the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club.

S

ince August 2008, the environmental school project has established a public kindergarten to Grade 7 school and learning centre. The theory and practice of the project is supported by place-based, imaginative and ecological education. The project is based in principles of inquiry and inclusion and is a partner-

ship between several community groups, School District 42, and Simon Fraser University. The university-based research is funded through an environmental CommunityUniversity Research Alliance grant (eCURA) from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). eacher Randy Bates said everything the students do is hands-on, and primarily outside, and paddling is an activity that teaches balance and teamwork. “It’s how we go and do the different activities in our community,” Bates said. “It’s also something that’s very prevalent in our area.” Pitt Meadows Paddling Club past commodore Rick Hammer said these kinds of activities offer “a lot of hands-on stuff you don’t get at a desk” to the students between the ages of five and 13. “Instead of it being a textbook,” Bates offered, “all of the curriculum is coming out of the activities that they’re doing.” For more about the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club, visit www.pmpc.ca.
