Fire investigators are still trying to determine if there is a connection between a fire on Friday that damaged two homes on Lougheed Highway and two smaller fires earlier the same night, according to Maple Ridge assistant fire chief Mark Smitton. At 3:30 a.m. firefighters fought to contain the third fire, which destroyed two houses. One was boarded up. “One house was vacant and one housed a medicinal marijuana grow operation,” he said. Emergency personnel were called to the first fire on Cliff Avenue and a second fire on Dunbar Street before attending the fire at the houses.

Election presents ‘stark choice’ by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
A cheering crowd of about 300 people greeted the premier in Pitt Meadows on Friday afternoon as she arrived to bolster support for local Liberal candidates. Secondary school libraries will be staffed full-time using a combination of teacherlibrarians and library clerks. Cutting teacher-librarian positions to halftime was one of the proposals the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows board of education was considering in order to balance Mike Murray its budget School board chair in the face of $5.6 million shortfall. The 2013/14 preliminary operating budget passed last week with a few tweaks. The board decided to keep teacher-librarians at .625 full-time equivalent and raise library clerk time from 10 hours per school to 20 hours. “The objective is to address one of the concerns expressed in the input meeting that libraries need to be open to students,” said board chair Mike Murray. The school district will use $1.52 million from its contingency fund next year.

After graduating in 1896, Lougheed accompanied an expedition of discovery through the Cariboo and then signed on for the Boer War, fighting with the Canadian Mounted Rifles until the end of that conflict. Questions were posed last Thursday to candidates running for the Maple Ridge-Mission riding on health, fish farms, poverty, and pipelines. In anticipation of the May 14 provincial election, the Whonnock Community Association hosted an allcandidates meeting. Marc Dalton, the Liberal incumbent for the Maple Ridge-Mission riding, Mike Bocking, the NDP candidate, and Alex Pope, the Green Party of BC candidate, sparred over policy issues based on questions from the audience. While Dalton said he’s given his four years in office his “full effort,” Bocking told the audience that the Liberals are “out of ideas.” When asked about the fact that B.C. is still second highest in the country for child poverty, Dalton said
Upcoming all-candidate meetings
More election forums are on the books before May 14 election: • Tuesday (today) Ridge Meadows Seniors Society is hosting a meeting at the seniors centre, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. for candidates in both ridings; • Thursday, May 2, the chamber of commerce hosts an all-candidates forum at Meadowridge School, from 7 to 9 p.m., for candidates in both ridings; • Monday, May 6, the District Parent Advisory Council and Board of Education are hosting a meeting at Thomas Haney Secondary, at 7 p.m.
it’s important to have a strong education system with university and skills training “so you break the cycle of poverty.” In responding to a question about a lack of morals in politics, Bocking said one important proposal for the NDP is that they will ban donations to political parties from both unions and corporations. But he also pointed out that it’s important for voters to be vigilant as to what politicians are doing. The NDP is trying to be careful in the current campaign about saying what

they will do. “We’ll say what we’re going to do and how we’ll pay for it,” he said, adding there’s a lot of “catchup” to do. “One practical step up at a time... it’s a recognition we can’t change everything overnight,” Bocking said. On health care, Pope said the Green Party would

integrate all levels of care for seniors and focus on preventative health care. “If we fund that, people get sick less and we’re able to catch things earlier and be less costly... we’ll save money in our health care system,” Pope said. Some issues the NDP would focus on are home care for seniors, long-term care, and lowering the cost of prescription drugs, Bocking said. In conclusion, Dalton said the Liberals have a track record of the lowest personal tax rate, and one of the lowest small business tax rates. Dalton said this election will “impact” on people’s wallets and on “people’s lifestyles.” “We think that after 12 years, the Liberals have lost their way and we think that it’s time to focus on some of the essentials – good quality health care and education,” Bocking concluded.

Only recently, we added Layar to our communications toolbox, providing a dynamic link between our print edition and the Internet. Layar allows us to add extra photos and videos “behind” our pages, along with pertinent website addresses and further background information about the stories and people and events and activities that help to define our community. One thing that is not new about the Times is our commitment to the community we serve. The TIMES set out to be a community newspaper from the start – a newspaper that doesn’t just cover the news within the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, but one that shares with the people who make up those communities. Our continued involvement in this weekend’s fabulous home show is just one example of that commitment. It’s our goal – always has been – to bring people together, to share information, to help the community grow, and to grow with our community… for many more anniversaries to come. – B.G.

Dear Editor,
Education
Post-secondary students need help Dear Editor,
Education costs are quite high in B.C. and Canada, in general. Students are taking on more debt to become skilled workers. This debt holds back young graduates and makes it harder for people without means to get an education. Post-secondary costs and education are an important issue in the coming election. In their official election platform, the BC Liberals note that businesses are
looking for trained workers but cannot find any. Yet, their solutions do not address that issue, and instead focus on providing a small number of textbooks for free and vague changes to BC StudentAid. As a recent post-secondary graduate, these are not good solutions; most of the student aid available in B.C. comes from the federal government, and currently there are no provincially based education grants available
Election issues
Semantics miss main point Dear Editor,
Andree D’Andrea’s letter [Behaviour says it all, April 25 Letters, TIMES] is superb. While NDP supporters use euphemisms to gloss over their candidate’s “mistakes,” Ms. D’Andrea states the odious facts. In the fall of 1998 Adrian Dix created a false document. Debating the use of the word “forged” (forged: from Latin fabrica, as in fabrication) is just using semantics. Not only was it falsely date-stamped back to July 1998, the date was typed in the memo’s heading. He created the whole memo. I like Ms. D’Andrea’s choice of music. A movie also comes to mind, A Few Good Men. Tom Cruise, as a military lawyer, questions Jack Nicholson, a colonel, and says, “I want the truth.” Jack Nicholson responds: “You can’t handle the truth.”

for most post-secondary students. Tuition is prohibitively high, and there needs to be a greater focus on getting skilled post-secondary graduates into jobs that are related to their skill set. The NDP has come out in favour of creating a provincial grant program to reduce student debt and increase access to education. One semester at SFU or UBC can cost upwards of $3,000, without textbooks or living expenses. If businesses need more skilled workers, tuition costs and student debt need to be reduced. There are few options in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area for postsecondary education. Students without cars may have difficulty getting to class. Many students must spend hours commuting to and from school each day. I ended up moving closer to school to save time commuting and for work. The Liberals platform focuses mainly on K12 education and neglects issues that face post-secondary students.

Environment
Bags evidence of lack of respect
Dear Editor,
While on a walk with my mom I saw that people have been throwing their dog poop bags in the Albion Park forest. There are literally hundreds of bags covering the forest floor. It makes me feel mad, because I really think people should have more respect for the forest. The forest is good and kind to us, it provides us with wood for our houses and aids us with clean air for breathing and is an excellent place to go and relax and be one with nature, and this is not the way to treat it.
Our environment deserves more respect. I realize people don’t think about the consequences and they just randomly litter. There is a $100 penalty if you get caught. Is it really worth it? Is your garbage can that full? If you think you’re responsible enough to have a dog, then prove it and stop littering!

Police blotter
Who Am I? The TIMES Where Am ‘i’? contest seems to be a little easier for some than our Who Am I? contest. More people were struggling with the last one. But Janet Brown correctly identified the late Austin Pelton, who served as an alderman and mayor in Maple Ridge before being elected as a Social Credit member of the legislative assembly (MLA) for the Dewdney riding from 1983 to 1991. Kudos to Brown for being our weekly winner. She, along with all the others who Facebooked in the correct answers, is now entered in a grand-prize draw. Who Am I is part of a twice-weekly TIMES contest, where readers are asked to identify people from this community’s distant and recent past. For instance, who’s in this photo? Entering is simple. Readers can “Like Us” on Facebook and answer before 9 a.m. Friday to be automatically entered to win weekly and grand prizes.

A man suspected of mail theft in Pitt Meadows was arrested in Coquitlam. Police say the arrest of Brandon Russell CummingHobson at a Coquitlam hotel late Thursday night was the result of cooperation between the Coquitlam and Ridge Meadows RCMP. “His arrest is the culmination of some long hours of good old-fashioned police work,” said Ridge Meadows Insp. David Fleugel, describing him as one of the main suspect in several mail thefts.

uring the HST rebellion, almost half of the people who voted realized that, although they hate taxation, harmonizing the PST and GST was definitely the most efficient and fair way to collect tax, but the rebellion won. I think now most people recognize we collectively got mad and shot ourselves in the foot. In two weeks we get to see if we can do it again. If we believe Elections BC, less than half of the people are expected to vote. That, if true, is demoralizing. In the 1960s the NDP was a coalition between the socialists and the industrial unions. Things were clearer then. The Liberal Conservative coalition (Social Credit) was created by W.A.C. Bennett who referred to the NDP as an “unholy alliance.” W.A.C. was a great premier who served for more than 20 years.
Saying Just by Gordy Robson During the NDP Dave Barrett government (in the ’70s) things started to change, and with the decline of the industrial unions (IWA), the NDP organizers moved to the public service sector and they got stronger. During the Bill Bennett years (in the ’80s), the size of government was reduced. When the economy recovered from the Barrett years, the province once again became economically healthy. In the ’90s the NDP Clark government significantly enhanced the benefit plans

of the civil service unions. Benefit packages became the entitlement of civil servants throughout B.C. and certainly they cannot be blamed for accepting it. They now make an average of 15 per cent more than the private sector plus the benefit package. There is a new database available at the www.vancouversun.com/pay which lists public servants making more than $75,000 per year. Apparently the list is 70,000 strong. The difference is that instead of the unions demanding better pay from greedy, selfish employers, they now get it from property taxpayers. This is changing the fundamental belief in
ownership of property. The belief that you could pay off your mortgage and live on your pension in your home is being destroyed by the continued escalation of property taxes. When you own a piece of property, the property taxes become like a mortgage with the mafia. They tell you how much more you are going to pay every year, and if you don’t pay, they will take your house away. The only thing we know for sure is the payments will go up. So in 14 days we will see if we can shoot our other foot. Just saying…

Earth-Friendly Downtown Maple Ridge With Earth Day done for this year, maintaining the environment-friendly momentum we’ve got going can be as easy as choosing to shop local first!
REDUCE your footprint...
Ineke Boekhorst Executive Director
Many local restaurants, like Big Feast Bistro + Catering on 227th, Chameleon Cafe on 224th, Concerto Lounge on Fraser St. and Frogstone Grill on Lougheed, source their ingredients locally, meaning support for local farmers and a smaller environmental impact. Organic World on Dewdney Trunk supports the environment by offering organic local produce and grain- and grass-fed meats that are free of growth hormones and antibiotics. Do you reduce your footprint by cycling instead of driving when possible? We have some great bike experts in town, including Local Ride on Dewdney Trunk and Maple Ridge Cycle on Fraser Street, who can help get you outfitted with all your biking needs. Maybe driving is a necessity for you? Living in the Fraser Valley means that many of us are car-dependent at least some of the time, but even here we can be pro-active for the environment. Hybrid and electric cars are a valid option since the District of Maple Ridge installed several electric charging stations in the Downtown core. Even regular cars are much more efficient now. Check out Fiat of Maple Ridge on Lougheed Hwy if you need a new fuel-efficient (but fun!) commuter car.
REUSE what you have.... We live in a time when many things are disposable and built to wear out, but some things just require proper care and maintenance to give years of value. In Downtown Maple Ridge we have lots of ways to extend the life of our possessions. Do you have your lawnmower serviced regularly? Try Haney Home Hardware on 223rd St for maintenance and repair services. How about your car? Regular maintenance will help it run more efficiently – good for the environment AND your wallet! We have many automotive businesses in town – Boyd Autobody, Kelly’s Automotive Service, Maple Ridge Hi-Tech Collision Repair and Kirmac Collision on Dewdney Trunk, Haney Automotive on Selkirk, East Gate Autobody and Start Automotive on 227th to name a few, will keep them in top shape inside and out. Even our personal possessions need occasional service to keep them going. Don’t throw away those jeans or that coat because of a tear or a broken zipper - Ben’s Town Tailor in Haney Place Mall, Seamless Alterations on 119th Ave, Meadows Cleaners in Valley Fair Mall and Star Cleaners and Alterations on 228th St can bring your favourites back to life. Visit G.A.M. Shoes and Repair in Valley Fair Mall, Phil’s Town Square Cobbler in Haney Place Mall, or Bob’s Shoe Repair on Dewdney Trunk to get your shoes and boots back on the road again!
RECYCLE what you no longer need.... We make good use of the blue box program we have in Maple Ridge, and make trips to the Recycling Centre as needed, but there are other ways to recycle the things that no longer fit into our lives. At Shopping Addictions and Trendy Tots on Dewdney Trunk, La Bell Chateau on 224th and Crazy About Clothes on 228th. , we can give new life to fashions that are in great shape but no longer used, and many charities in town appreciate donations of home goods and clothing. Even out-grown or idle sporting goods can be traded at Sports Traders on Lougheed Hwy, for someone else to enjoy. In Downtown Maple Ridge caring for the environment can be easy AND enjoyable – just start local!

Kindness proves addictive
W
hen an elderly customer asked if it was safe for a pedestrian – namely himself – to cross the Lougheed Highway during midday traffic in downtown Maple Ridge, Mark’s Work Wearhouse’s bootman stepped up, offering to help the gentleman traverse the potentially dangerous obstacle course. And that random act of kindness gave the 22-year-old retail clerk – who works in the boot department – such a natural high, that he’s been trying ever since to recapture the sensation with daily acts of kindness. Brandon Nagy, who has worked

at Mark’s since 2007, was surprised by the rush that accompanied his kind gesture, but he was even more shocked – and humbled – that his efforts were attracting attention. About two weeks ago, a man in his late 70s was in the store to buy a couple pairs of jeans. Nagy was ringing through the purchase when the man asked how hard it was to cross the four lanes of traffic in front of the store. “Sometimes it can be difficult to get across the street, because of all the traffic,” Nagy said, as was the case that day. Since Nagy was heading off on his half-hour lunch break immediately after that sale, he offered to escort the older man. When the pair got out to the road, however, it was instantly apparent there was too much traffic whizzing by for either of them
to pass safely. Even though the elderly man was having obvious difficulty walking long distances – which Nagy would later learn was from years of smoking – the senior bid Nagy adieu and headed east along the sidewalk, bound for the crosswalk half a block away. That’s when Nagy decided to take his good deed a step further, he ran back into the parking lot, retrieved his car, and quickly zipped back up to Lougheed. He pulled over next to the older man – who was again attempting to cross the road – and offered him a lift. Nagy proceeded to escort the man into London Drugs to buy a stamp and mail a letter, then offered – since the older man didn’t live too far away in west

Brandon Nagy hopes everyone can experience the natural high he did from being kind and helping a man get safely across Lougheed Highway.
Maple Ridge – to drive him home. “I guess I did my good deed for the day,” Nagy said, seeing from the grateful smile on the gentleman’s face that he was really appreciative. “He was totally shocked by it,” Nagy said, noting that the older man tried to give him gas money, but Nagy refused. Once the man was out of the car, he bid Nagy adieu again, then threw a $10 bill on the car seat and quickly shut the door. Beaming with a sense of pride,
Nagy nodded thanks, and was off. He said the smile on his face didn’t wane for the rest of the day. “It’s wasn’t too far and I was able to get there, and beg back with time to still get a drink before my break was over. And I was just feeling so good.” Nagy found the entire experience so addictive, he can’t wait to do it again. “It really sort of inspired me… I’m going to continue to do my good deeds around here, that’s for sure,” said Nagy, even more shocked to learn the man called his boss to sing his praises. That adds to the reward, but Nagy said, “that’s definitely not why I did it, and that’s not why I’ll keep doing it. It’s just the thankfulness of the people after you’ve helped them, even if they don’t show it too much – it feels good. How could that be bad?”

Opening honours mayor Don MacLean attended the grand unveiling of a commuity park named after him on Saturday. by Sylver McLaren
smclaren@mrtimes.com
Don MacLean was honoured with a park in his name on Saturday. The former mayor was touted as the driving force behind many parks in his 21 years of service in Pitt Meadows. When MacLean took to the podium he laughed about how many times he has already been at MacLean Park before the grand opening. “I wanted to come here today, but, to be honest, I have snuck down here a couple of times in the past year – well two dozen times,” MacLean said.
“This has blown me away,” he said, adding that after he learned about this honour he was walking around two feet off the ground for some time. “I remember the summer leading up to this day,” recalled Mayor Deb Walters. “Our CAO, Mr. Jake Rudolph had sent out an email asking us if there was anything we would like to do to honour Mayor MacLean upon his retirement,” she said, adding that she immediately suggested naming the future park planned for McMyn Road, MacLean Park. “I know that he was committed to the parks and leisure commission and to the people of Pitt Meadows, so what better way to honour 21 years of service to the community. Don once said he had enough plaques throughout the community with his name on them, but, Don, you didn’t have a park,” Walters said. • More online at www.mrtimes.com

The Caring Place
Centre turns man’s life around Marking its 10-year anniversary, the Salvation Army’s shelter and outreach centre held an open house. Story and photo by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@mrtimes.com
The burly man adorned in a red ball cap and St. Louis Cardinals baseball jersey was able to mask the nerves coursing through him as he made his way through a room inside the Caring Place Thursday. Square-jawed Joe Barbaro, with ink covering his forearms and a small Italian flag tattoo colouring the right side of his neck, didn’t appear the anxious type. But a few butterflies flip-flopped inside the 42-year-old former addict’s belly as he prepared to share his story to a room full of dignitaries and politicians. The Caring Place celebrated its 10th anniversary in its current location – at 222nd Street and Lougheed Highway – with an open house, visits from local dignitaries, and a barbecue on April 25. The event also featured a speech from Barbaro, who spoke about the good the Salvation Army facility has done, and continues to do, for him and others in his situation. “I’m a Joe little nervBarbaro ous,” is 13 Barbaro months admitted, clean and shortly before sober. taking the mic. “But that’s okay. I’ve got to give back. It’s
all about giving back… If somebody’s helping you and you don’t say anything, it’s more of a burden.” Through its outreach programs, 15-bed transitional housing facility, and 25-bed emergency shelter, the Caring Place supports individuals and families struggling with poverty, addictions, mental illness, hunger, and housing. Barbaro, who garnered notoriety in 2008 when he appeared in eight one-hour episodes of Canada’s Worst Handyman, Season 3, is currently working on himself after several years of drug and alcohol abuse. The former bodybuilder, originally from Barrie, Ont. credits the Caring Place for helping to turn his life around. Barbaro initially went to the Maple Ridge Treatment Centre when he decided he needed treatment for the first time. “I knew that if I really wanted to change my life, it was going to take a couple of years,” Barbaro shared with The TIMES shortly before taking the mic. “I knew that if I was going to fix the problem I was doing since I was 12, one way or another, it was going to be a long-term thing.” He was introduced to the Caring Place from a person he met at a meeting. “The rest is history,” Barbaro said. He’s a little more than 13 months clean and sober and even after a full year, he’s had his struggles. “It’s just dealing with issues, right?” he said. “The first while, you’re concentrating on getting clean and sober. It’s tough. Now I’ve gotta deal with the past – that’s why this program is good. You can stay here for up to three years, and you need it.” Barbaro said he was “pretty well a trash can” before getting clean and finding God. “Alcohol, drugs, cocaine, crack, crystal meth… I was on both sides of the fence, you know what I mean?… God really changed my heart. I was in all aspects of the game, that’s all I have to say.” Barbaro said he’s now found peace. His former lifestyle plunged him into “24-hour chaos.” He became affiliated with gangs in his hometown and fell into a bad crowd, which led him on a path of self-destruction. ““I started [using] early. I just started hanging out with the older people, and I wanted to be the cool guy,” he said. “My new definition of cool is not being so hot.”

The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 4, 2013. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. Incredible really when you think of it. Still we don’t have a proper home,” said coach and marketing manager Malcolm Knox “All of these girls have big commitments outside of rugby and the physical commitment they have been putting in has been unreal. ‘Everything’ festivities
Home show Home show keeps expanding and growing happenings This weekend’s event in Albion is about more than just the home.
WHAT • WHERE • WHEN? What? Dubbed “The Everything Show,” Ridge Meadows Home Show is one of the largest and most diverse home shows in Western Canada. The three-day event showcases at least 375 exhibitors offering everything to renovate, decorate, and landscape a home, plus a whole lot more. Where? Planet Ice Maple Ridge, the Golden Ears Curling Rink, and the Albion Fairgrounds, 23588 105th Ave., off Lougheed Highway. When? Friday, May 3, 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. How much? $4 per person, $7 family. Worth noting: The event features abundant FREE parking. Most visitors can access the main parking lots at Planet Ice, but, during peak periods, traffic will be directed to the overflow parking lot located two minutes east of Planet Ice, off 240th Street, along 104th Avenue, beside the sports fields, with free shuttle service moving people back and forth.

ens of thousands of people from throughout the Lower Mainland will converge on the Albion flats this weekend for what is fast becoming known as The Everything Show. The annual Ridge Meadows Home Show runs this Friday through Sunday, May 3 to 5, at Planet Ice and the adjoining Albion Fairgrounds. With preliminary weather forecasts sounding optimistic for sun, coordinator Cass Winder was making a few predictions of her own. “This year’s show won’t disappoint,” Winder insisted. “Around for 40 years, in years gone by the show was the community showcase,” she said. “Decades later, we have the distinction of being one of Western Canada’s largest home shows with more than 375 booths on site.” Each year, they sell out the booth space months ahead, with waiting lists in virtually every category. This year was no exception. “It’s a fact of life that we are forced to turn people away. As a sales vehicle, we are a source to be reckoned with, and retailers know this. We have a reputation for doing a great show and that draws thousands…” But this is much more than some ordinary home show. Sure it will feature exhibitors and hundreds of those will offer interesting or innovative
solutions for the home – both inside and out, thanks to the recent addition of the Outdoor Life & Leisure Show component. “We have tons of new exhibitors and once again, we’re showcasing everything to renovate, decorate, and landscape your home, with additional features such as wellness, decor, housewares, and taste samples,” Winder said. Moreover, the home show is the largest single event in the community each year, and part of the event’s distinction comes from adding a series of other components to the three-day event, Winder said, making it the “everything show.” Always popular additions to the home
Inside and out, the Albion fairgrounds and Planet Ice will be bustling with fun and activities for families at this weekend’s home show. show include the Family Fest with a wide variety of activities and entertainment for kids of all ages, the West Coast Amusements midway and rides, the always popular TIMES BBQ School & Taste Event featuring TIMES culinary columnist and instructor Chef Dez, as well as the Body, Mind, & Spirit Psychic and Wellness Fair, and a new “every woman” fashion show and a fundraiser plant sale.

they have the time in their schedules, to chop a few handfuls of ingredients, but once you try this recipe you will never want to go back to the powdered mix. The only ingredient in this recipe that may seem foreign to you is “sambal oelek.” It is a crushed chili product that comes in a liquid/ paste form that is basically a re-hydrated form of the dried crushed chilies you have on your spice rack. It can be found in any major grocery store’s Asian food aisle or imported food aisle or gourmet food store. Even if you have always made your guacamole, I am certain that you will still appreciate the complexity and balance of flavour this recipe has to offer, as well as the texture. Eat, enjoy, and be merry this fifth of May… but try not to dance around the sombrero too much.

Backyards and front yards alike are becoming obvious extensions of people’s living space, so consequently more and more folks are looking for ways to decorate that space and make it more livable. The outdoor lifestyle and leisure section of this weekend’s home show will feature a number of great ideas, and give visitors a chance to win this (inset) $1,500 firepit.

hinking about buying a patio set, barbecue, hot tub, firepit, ATV, or RV? Ever walk by a display of outdoor patio furniture and gush over it or imagine sprawling out on it? Well, now’s the chance to narrow down the choice to what would look best in the backyard. Ridge Meadows Home Show once again features an outdoor lifestyle and leisure component this weekend at the Albion Fairgrounds, Friday through Sunday, May 3 to 5. The outdoor lifestyle and leisure component of the show made its debut a few years back and each year it packs a more powerful punch, said event coordinator Cass Winder. “This year the emphasis is on backyard living, with pools, hot tubs, decks, outdoor firepits, patios, barbecues – pretty much everything you need to enjoy your backyard,” she elaborated. Winder is particularly psyched about the addition of a contest this year that will see one lucky home show guest take home a 36-inch Rocky Mountain firepit, noting it’s one of numerous prizes being offered at this year’s show. The firepit is being offered up by show newcomer Randy Bishop and members of his Bishop’s Centre’s outdoor living team. “The prize donated would be a great draw for people to visit the outside venue and enter for a prize,” he added, noting people can enter at his display. While he knows that will attract some serious attention, ultimately, Bishop hopes his presence at the show will help more locals discover his Abbotsford store. In addition to giving people tips and ideas to decorate their outdoor living space, the outdoor lifestyle and leisure show will also feature a number of other booths and displays encouraging a more active lifestyle. For instance, Winder said, there will be displays ranging from motorcycles and ATVs, to camping equipment and tennis, golf, and a variety of fitness booths aimed at getting kids – and adults alike – outside for more physical exercise. For instance, Yuen’s Family Martial Arts is once again hosting a ninja obstacle course specially designed to promote getting families active, said organizer Perry Bateson. Kids of all ages will have fun throwing sticky ninja stars at targets, breaking boards, testing balance, and learnPerry Bateson ing some fun ninja moves. Yuen’s owner Golf lovers will also be given the opportunity to try out the longest drive competition put on by Nevada Bob’s Golf and Heather Hills Farm & Golf Course. Hit the longest drive and take home a one-year membership for Heather Hills. Plus, runners-up win golf prize packages. Meridian RV will also be setting up an outdoor display to show off the latest recreational vehicles including the newest campers, toy haulers, motorhomes, and fifth wheels. A plant sale is one of the newest additions to this year’s outdoor component of the Ridge Meadows Home Show. “New to the show this year is the direct-from-the-grower plant sale,” Winder said. “The outdoor lifestyles and leisure show will host this event, located at the entrance… just walk straight towards the fairgrounds from Planet Ice,” she said, noting proceeds will help keep the outdoor events free. “The new plant sale will feature bedding plants, planters, and window boxes at incredible prices,” Winder said, noting that it will not compete with the perennial favourite – the annual hanging basaket sale this year being presented by the Pitt Meadows Lions Club. Once again the baskets will be sold on the front steps of Planet Ice, with all proceeds from that event going to the Lions for distribution to local projects. • Stay tuned to The TIMES Thursday for more home show happenings
