Young dad in fight of his life A popular father of two from Pitt Meadows is making the best of each day as he battles colon cancer. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Jayden Baily planted his feet, his legs set roughly two feet apart, knees slightly bent, back and arms straight. He wound back, looping his golf club around his shoulder. Jayden then swung the club forward with all his might. A sharp crack broke the silence, signifying titanium connecting flush with the ball, that sliced slightly to the right and sailed into the blue sky. Considering Jayden is just five years old, it was an impressive tee shot. Onlookers cheered loudly. Jayden somewhat sheepishly made his way over to his dad Blake and gave him a high five. The Pitt Meadows boy successfully hit the ceremonial first tee shot to kick off the sold-out BLAKESTRONG Invitational Golf Tournament, a fundraiser for his dad and the rest of his family. The May 3 tournament at Pitt Meadows Golf Club saw 140 golfers play in support of Blake, who has an aggressive form of colon cancer. The family patriarch is battling this disease head on, not just for him but for his wife Julie, for Jayden, and for his youngest son, three-year-old Rylan. A sales representative in the electrical industry, Blake is on disability as he endures bi-weekly chemotherapy treatments to fight the cancer, which is stage four, meaning it has spread to other organs. “That’s a scary thing to hear, when you hear you’re stage four cancer,” the 31-year-old said. “When I first heard about my cancer, I heard it from my general physician who has been my doctor since I was three months old. Throughout this ordeal, the diagnosis, the chemotherapy, the stress and anxiety, Julie, Blake’s wife of two years and partner of eight, has been his rock. “I don’t know how she does it,” he said. And Blake’s legion of friends continue to rally around him. Prior to the golf tournament, Blake’s supporters organized a pub night March 10 at Roosters Country Cabaret that drew 400 people. “It’s amazing, the support that we’ve had,” he said. “I’ve always been able to make friends sort of wherever I go. A group of volunteers and board members were at Friends In Need Food Bank on Tuesday wishing its executive director well as she steps down from her position. Joanne Olson said she won’t be continuing as executive director because she doesn’t feel she can give 100 per cent at the taill end of her cancer treatment. “I don’t know if I’ll have the energy,” she said of the demanding job of running a food bank that feeds a few thousand people a month in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Olson has been struggling with ovarian cancer for more than a year, and she said she needs a few more months to recover. “I didn’t want to leave [the food bank] hanging,” she said. And, she added, during her recovery process, “I just don’t need the stress now.” Olson said she will be doing some travelling and a lot of gardening this summer. Olson was the executive director for almost four years, and she said she has a lot of memories, including the annual Christmas parade where the food bank collects money and food donations, and dealing with pallets of questionable food that shouldn’t have been accepted. Heading up the organization has been a very “hands-on” job, Olson said, and she has had to be flexible with her time, responsible for day-to-day finances, staffing, fundraising, and networking in the community to “make sure you are out there.” Leaving the food bank is “bittersweet” for Olson, “because I like the job – but I don’t think I can do the job... the way I like to do it,” she said. Before coming to the food bank, Olson ran a restaurant, worked for the United Way, and was the executive assistant to a member of Parliament. “I like challenges,” Olson said. “I like to go in and fix things and let them grow.” Mary Robson is volunteering as the acting executive director at the moment.

Fourteen consolidated lots bought by the District of Maple Ridge have been pulled off the market temporarily. The District bought the 14 lots in January 2011, and demolished the houses on the properties, in order to sell it for redevelopment. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said the marketing has been put “on hold” for a while as the District has been a “victim of our own success” with the downtown incentive program sparking so much development in the downtown core. Daykin said with so much happening in the downtown core and “a lot on the market,” council decided to wait for a while before continuing to market the

property.” The lot is located between Haney Place Mall and Valley Fair

Mall. Currently, the District is levelling off and maintaining the property. But Daykin said it is “all about timing,” and he doesn’t believe it will be a challenge to sell it when the time comes. Having bought and cleaned up the property, it has put the District in the “driver’s seat,” Daykin said. “We don’t want to accept just anything,” Daykin said, adding that they want a “really well done project.” “It’s not like we’re under the gun,” he said. But, Daykin said there’s a “fine line” between making things happen as a municipality and being in competition with other developers. “We’re not developers,” he said. “We’re there to facilitate.” Council plans to look at marketing the property again in the fall, Daykin said. The District of Maple Ridge spent $3.7 million to buy the 14 lots.

Ridge twins star in Man of Steel A blockbuster film with ‘A-List’ actors will also include baby brothers from Maple Ridge.

At the risk of mixing movie cliches, Maple Ridge’s own dynamic duo will be appearing in a movie about the man of steel. Chris and Candice Colgan’s twin boys Cruz and Ryder were cast as baby Superman “Kal-El” in the summer blockbuster Man of Steel, that premieres June 14. “The closer [the premiere] gets, the more excited I am,” Candice said. “Superman is the most recognized comic book character in the world. The fact my boys are immortalized for life, I am just so excited about that.” The twins were used in one scene, of Kal-El being born. The brothers were chosen for the role while still “preemies” in hospital. “The role… fell right into our lap and when we committed to the talent agency and to Warner Brothers, we had no idea what movie our boys would be in,” Candice shared. The parents were told the movie was called Autumn Frost (a code name they used for many reasons, including security and traffic control) but when Candice decided to do a little investigating and googled “Cast of Autumn Frost” she found out the movie was actually Man of Steel. “I was so excited,” she said. “And who doesn’t love the original movies with Christopher Reeves?” When she took the twins for their costume fitting, Candice asked some of the crew if her boys were actually playing “Baby Superman.” They confirmed that these boys were, in fact, going to play the baby Kal-El. “I was overjoyed and felt that the role was so fitting because I felt my boys really were little ‘Supermans’ [due to] their severely premature birth at 29 weeks,” Candice said. Both boys weighed just three pounds at birth and were born by emergency Csection at Ridge Meadows Hospital. The family has been waiting for a year-and-ahalf for this movie, and the premiere is fast approaching. “One of my boys [Ryder] is in two of the trailers, too, which was also very exciting to watch and Russell Crowe plays the

Garden draws old, young by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

On Friday morning, the Intergenerational Garden on Edge Street was officially opened. It is being tended by seniors and children from Eric Langton Elementary and St. Patrick’s school. Gardening coordinator Sue Fleming said the opening was “amazing.” The seniors and students have already been gardening and most of the beds are planted, including a raised one that swarmed with ladybugs on Friday. “It’s been interesting to see how excited kids get when the seeds grow,” Fleming said. A session for volunteers takes place on May 23 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Eric Langton Elementary, 12138 Edge St. For more information, call 604-837-8915 or gardencoord@gmail.com.

Concerns raised about transfer An annual general meeting sparked heated discussion about a hall. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The good news story from Thursday’s Whonnock Community Association’s annual general meeting was that the board now includes its

youngest member, according to Whonnock resident Jo Ann ten Brink. Jacqlyn Rempel will be the association’s vice-president. But the rest of the meeting concerned some Whonnock residents as they wanted more discussion about transferring operations of the hall to the District of Maple Ridge, initiated by the board in January. ten Brink, a past pres-

ident of the association, said she hopes questions raised at the AGM will start discussion about the future of the hall. “If it takes a crisis to spur people to take action, it’s a good thing,” she said. Parks general manager Kelly Swift said there is no urgency to transfer the hall to the municipality and hopes her organization can help the community work through the process.

Our View

Democracy… a good thing Now that the dust has settled and everyone has had a chance to catch their breath after what – for many, at least – was a breath-taking election night last Tuesday, it’s a good time to consider some of the positive things that the entire election campaign gave us. For one thing, it Scan this gave us, as all free and page with open elections do in our blessed part of the world, the sweet taste of democracy. While we’re disheartened that so few people partook of that heady bouquet – one that millions of people around the world would literally die to bring to their own countries – those who chose not to vote exercised their rights, and as such, they, as much as anyone else, earned the government that will lead us through the next four years. That’s how democracy works… and it’s a good thing – certainly better than the alternatives. Another positive that came out of the election campaign, is that we will be represented by the best possible people in Victoria. We chose them, and they represent the majority of hopes and wishes for our province, for our communities, for ourselves, and for our future. That’s democracy, too. And that, too, is a good thing. But let’s not forget those who stood for election, despite having been able to garner more support than their successful opponents. They are all people who believed strongly enough in their visions for our communities that they offered those visions for all of us to share. That sharing of ideas and ideals of service is no less important an aspect of democracy than the final outcome of the vote. And that, too, is a good thing. Congratulations, all! – B.G.

Vaccine could keep your pet healthy

Dear Editor, Just to remind people of the importance of vaccinating your animals, and most importantly, the cleaning up of your animals: although vaccination is not a 100 per cent guarantee, it is still very important, just as important as cleaning up after your animals. Both my dogs are vaccinated, and unfortunately, one is in the hospital, waiting to find out if she has parvo. Other than walking around the neighbourhood, the only park they visit is Jordan Park. I continuously see people having their dogs off leash, chasing balls or just wandering around. This is not an off-leash park, and how can you clean up after your dogs if they are loose? You may not know they are going, or you choose not to care. Anyone who has visited this park in the past few days to a week, please keep an eye on your pets, and take them to a veterinarian if they appear sick. L. ucked into a row of businesses on the south side of Dewdney Trunk Road, you’ll find the Economy Cottage, an unassuming little place that could use some big exposure. Proceeds from sales at the thrift store help the Ridge Meadows Hospital auxiliary fund much-needed equipment and programs for the hospital, and funds four bursaries a year at $1,500 apiece for local students interested in nursing. The Economy Cottage sells used clothing and items, all donated by the public,

All those who staff the store are volunteers. Betty Schultz, the treasurer of Economy Cottage, is a relative newbie with the auxiliary – she’s only been with them for 10 years. “Originally when I retired I joined for something to do,” she said. “And I never left. I enjoy it, the staff is friendly.”

Two years ago, the auxiliary raised $190,000 for hospital equipment. The auxiliary, which this year celebrates six decades of service to the hospital, also runs the gift shop at the hospital. A one-month-old pharmacy in Maple Ridge is open and the pharmacist wants to know your name.

“This pharmacy for me is an opportunity to say thank you to the people of Canada,” pharmacist Sayed Atthari said of Medlandia Compounding Pharmacy, which is in a brand new building attached to a medical centre. Medlandia is a 1,400 sq. ft. full-service pharmacy which includes regular prescriptions, compound prescriptions, vaccines, veterinarian prescriptions, and consultations. Sayed remembers when he first came to Canada 27 years ago. “I didn’t speak any English, I didn’t have any money, I didn’t have anything,” he said. “Today, I am grateful for everything my customers have given me and it’s a pleasure to come to work everyday.” A Canadian family from Winnipeg that took Sayed in when he first arrived in Canada sat him down. “Son” they said, “If you have good

intentions, and you mean good, and you work hard, and you show up with a smile at work, it doesn’t matter what you do, you are going to be just fine.” That family even paid his first year’s tuition at the University of Manitoba. So, now it is his turn to give back. “It is my time to remember that moment everyday, and remember people who need my help, and to help people with their medication,” Sayed explained. “To me everybody has a story. Once you get to know people’s story, that is where communication happens, and that is when good things happen.” He doesn’t want a person to take medication just because a doctor said so. He wants people to understand why they are taking it, how long is the duration of the prescription, what are the alternatives, and whether there will be any side effects.

“I want to take the time to engage my patients in thought-provoking dialogue so they can find out why they are at the doctor¹s office, so they can come up with smart questions,” he added. He has two technicians working for him: Ana Maria Maior & Charlissa Newman. He is looking forward to expanding. Sayed moved to Canada from Iranian Kurdistan in 1988. He is married to Kejal, and together they have three children: Samira, 20, Hazhar, 16, and nine-yearold Zhiar.

Who am I? Join in and have some fun with Who Am I? Who Am I? is part of a twice-weekly TIMES contest, where readers are asked to identify people from this community’s distant and recent past. For instance, who’s the subject of this week’s picture? Readers can “Like Us” on Facebook and answer before 9 a.m. Friday to be entered to win. Patrice Damico correctly identified last week’s subject as former Social Credit MLA George Mussallem. He represented the Dewdney riding (as it was known then) from 1966 to 1972 and again from 1975 to 1983. He was also a long-time automobile dealer, working his way up the ladder of the family business before taking over from his father Solomon – who, by the way, was mayor of Maple Ridge for years and who made a failed attempt at the same MLA’s seat years earlier in 1933. Damico, along with all others who Facebooked in the correct answer, is entered in a grand-prize draw.

Hockey

Trans athlete becomes advocate Fear he couldn’t play hockey kept a teenager from making transition. by Megan Stewart Special to The TIMES

Cory Oskam looks like your typical teenage goaltender. His broad, fleshy frame fills a net and even in the gym for ball hockey, he positions his five-footeleven body to stop shots as if he’s wearing voluminous padding. His movements are deliberate and calm. When his teammates score the deciding goal after the school bell has rung, the boys scream, fist-pump and pile on each other to celebrate their heroics. Oskam, composed, looks on. He plays midget house for the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association, but two seasons ago, Oskam was a goaltender for the Vancouver Angels, the city’s only hockey association for girls. Two seasons ago, Cory was Anneke, a girl not comfortable in her body because she felt like a boy. “I was stealth,” he said. “No one knew I was trans. My teammates didn’t know until… they still don’t know, probably.” Oksam came out a week before Christmas 2011. He stayed home from school for two days while his classmates at Britannia Secondary learned about gender non-conformity, transitioning and transgendered people. They were told the girl they knew would return to school a boy. He had the support of staff, teachers, and the school district. Students with questions were encouraged to approach a counsellor. He said he hasn’t experienced any discrimination. “I’ve been treated the way I want to be treated — as a male. I don’t think anyone has treated me differently because I’m trans or

he said. “They’re funny enough that I laugh but they’re also just kind of stupid sometimes.” He doesn’t shower but instead heads home after games before completely undressing. He behaved differently among girls than he does with boys, who are boisterous, familiar and not generally as mature as Oskam, who has become a self-possessed and articulate advocate courageous enough to speak publicly about his experience. He has delivered workshops and spoken at dif-

ferent events. He delivered the keynote address last Friday at the ninth annual International Day Against Homophobia, hosted by QMUNITY, B.C.’s queer resource centre. For the occasion, he bought his first suit. And he shaved, he said. Organized sport is also making a transition. NBA veteran Jason Collins became the first active professional male athlete to announce he is gay, and the NHL supports You Can Play, a campaign to eliminate homophobia from hockey. Next month Oskam will attend an LGBT sports summit in Portland sponsored by Nike. And the association that governs high school sport in B.C. made it possible for gender-variant athletes to play on the team of their choice. B.C. School Sport bylaws now states, “A student-athlete may participate with the opposite sex in a sex-segregated sport on the basis that doing so would be consistent with his or her gender identity.” Oskam said this latest development may open the door for him to play a sport he previously shied away from, like basketball or badminton. He delayed announcing his transition because he worried being transgendered might prevented him from doing what he loved. “The one thing that was stopping me from transitioning was hockey. When I wanted to transition, when I wanted testosterone, I wanted to play girls hockey. I wanted to be male, use male pronouns, but play girls hockey,” he said. “My friends were there. I was really good at girls hockey. I played rep. I was up in the top.” Gay role models like Collins defy the stereotype that hold back young athletes like Oskram. Indeed, Oskram is also an inspiration to others.
