Vice-chair of a local stream steward society said his organization is thrilled to have won $100,000 toward an education facility at the Kanaka Creek Regional Park. The Shell Canada prize was made possible by the local community and local Shell stations pulling “The whole together to win contest has the money, said Kanaka been a shot Education and in the arm for Environmental the KEEPS Partnership Society’s organization.” (KEEPS) viceKen Williams chair Ken Williams. The money will be pooled with funds coming from Metro Vancouver, bringing the total raised so far to about $500,000 for the stewardship centre. “The whole contest has been a shot in the arm for the KEEPS organization,” Williams said, adding that it has generated enthusiasm within the group for the project. The stewardship centre is phase two at the regional park, following the recent completion of a new Bell-Irving Hatchery building. The new grant is part the Shell FuellingChange, a program that awards $2 million annually to Canadian environmental projects as chosen through online voting by Shell customers and community members. The Kanaka Creek Watershed Stewardship Centre (KCWSC) will focus on hands-on, environmental and experiential education. Participants learn about nature and the watershed, participate in hatchery activities, hike, test water quality, and survey stream invertebrates with interpreters.

Smiles were plentiful throughout the day on Saturday as hundreds of families came out to enjoy the Pitt Meadows Day festivities, from the breakfast, parade, official ceremonies, dance, to the barbecue dinner and fireworks.

Party peps up Pitt

Thousands of people came out for the annual Pitt Meadows Day celebrations on Saturday. by Sylver McLaren smclaren@mrtimes.com

Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters expressed a debt of gratitude to the Pitt Meadows Day Society, thanking its members for arranging a day-long community celebration “like no other” for thousands of people. “Throughout the year they meet regularly and each member has their role down to a science. The results are that they produce an exceptional day that showcases Pitt Meadows like no other event does,” Walters said after Saturday’s Pitt Meadows Day festivities.

“To the entire committee, you are the hearts and soul of this community, and we appreciate each and everyone of you,” she said of the 14-member society. After the pancake breakfast – served by the Pitt Meadows Lions Club – thousands of people lined the streets for the parade. More than 70 groups entered the parade. The firefighters and police got the most attention because of their water guns. Kids lined the street waiting for a chance to douse a uniformed member with water balloons, water guns, and hoses. “The Pitt Meadows Fire & Rescue not only works hard behind the scenes, they have become a visual fixture that citizens look forward to seeing every year,” said Walters. “Thank you for your contributions to

The day’s festivities also included the unveiling of a mural on the side of the Pitt Meadows firehall, created by Brad Dinwoodie – the same person whose artwork was announced as the winner for the City’s 100-year celebration logo. The new royal party, citizen of the year Sandy Wakeling, and Lynn Papp community services award winner Christine Thompson were also acknowledged by Walters, acting as master of ceremonies for the day’s festivities.

When the seniors network started to help coordinate a series of workshops to support people caring for their elderly parents, Heather Treleaven expected to have participants in their 40s and 50s. But the people coming out for the Aging Gracefully workshops were often in their 60s and 70s, caring for their parents in their 80s and 90s, said the seniors network coordinator. “Some of these folks have age-related health issues of their own and yet they are still providing care for their elderly parents,” she added. Aging Gracefully has been held at the Maple Ridge Library for the past two years, and it’s one of the resources available in the community for seniors, who are the focus this week during “Seniors Week.” According to a report by the United Way, the number of seniors has risen slightly in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and currently seniors comprise about 12 per cent of the population. This translates into 2,100 seniors living in Pitt Meadows, and 9,210 in Maple Ridge. Recently, the seniors network received funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program, a federal government program, to help develops its seniors task force, which involves seniors themselves to identify areas of

This includes new programs like the Intergenerational Garden on Edge Street and a Grand Buddies seniors mentoring program at Eric Langtotn and Highland Park elementary schools. Housing and transportation are two issues that seniors have said are issues for them. The downturn in the economy has resulted in seniors who have less money for retirement leaving them to “re-evaluate their plans,” Treleaven said. “Many seniors are living in their homes longer with supports, which can be great,” Trelevean said. “However, we are finding more seniors than ever before are continuing to pay a mortgage after age 65.” There is also a shortage of affordable, income-based assist-

Diet and exercise are the number one things mentioned by researchers, but just as important, she said, is maintaining social connections. “Making and maintaining social connections in the community helps prevent vulnerable seniors becoming subject to abuse and neglect,” she said.

by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

An empty home in west Maple Ridge burned early Monday morning, but was put out quickly by Maple Ridge firefighters. The house on the 21400 block of 122nd Avenue was vacant and the power had been cut. “The first arriving crew knocked the fire down pretty quickly,” Spence said, adding that the nature of the house “made the overhaul a little more of a challenge.”

Maria Rantanen/TIMES

Fire chief Dane Spence arrived Monday afternoon to start investigating a fire that took place early that morning in west Maple Ridge.

Amnesty declared

When Mounties last offered a gun amnesty in 2006, Ridge Meadows RCMP took in 48 firearms and 21 boxes of ammunition. Now they are encouraging Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents to give up any illegal guns or ammunition – no questions asked as long as they’re not linked to a serious crime – as part of a province-wide initiative. In the month of June, people can call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251 to arrange to have an officer pick up the firearm, weapon, or ammunition.

Chopper colonel leads review

Three air cadet medals were handed out during a recent ceremony. by Sylver McLaren

A local air cadets squadron was able to showcase its talents at the 59th annual ceremonial review at the Golden Ears Curling Club on May 25. The review is the culmination of the 583 Coronation Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets training year. The cadets showed the results of their activities, including first-aid training, survival camping, familiarization with gliding and power flight, band, aviation, and aerospace studies. The cadets were reviewed by Col. Jeffrey Morris of the 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron, which is based at the Victoria International Airport. Morris’ squadron is responsible for the Sea King helicopters aboard the Canadian Navy ships serving in the Pacific and Middle East. “I’m delighted to be here,” the colonel said. “We review the parade, assess it, take the salute,

speak to the cadets, and at the end pass comments on it,” said Morris, who came from Sydney that morning. His job is to encourage cadets and share his life’s lessons, he explained. There were six others in the reviewing party including Maj. Tim Alguire, the legion’s Peter Kane, league inspector Nancy Chapman, commanding officer Capt. John Harrop, squadron commander Philip Ko, and sponsoring committee chair Kellie Kemps. One cadet who made a name for himself was Flight Sgt. Andrew Britton. He was awarded the Lord Strathcona Medal, which is

the second highest honour in cadets. It is given to a cadet who exemplifies physical fitness and has excellent military knowledge, said Britton. A few of the activities he does in cadets include acting as the Spitfire Flight Commander, participating in first aid, and learning effective speaking. In other cadet news, this Sunday at 1 p.m. 1838 RCACC, the Royal Westminster Regiment Army Cadet Corps will hold its 71st annual ceremonial review in the parking lot across from the legion on 224th Street.

Our View

Seniors still struggling Affordable housing, the economy, and paying off the mortgage – these are problems facing lots of young adults, young families, and middle-aged people. But, unfortunately, they are also problems that many seniors are dealing with at a time when they Scan this should be enjoying their page with golden years. This week is seniors week and it should be a time we celebrate those who have been on this planet the longest and draw on their life experience and wisdom. That is being done in Maple Ridge through the Intergenerational Garden, a community garden on Edge Street that pairs up seniors with students from the two adjoining schools – the students provide the heavy lifting, the seniors, the knowledge about gardening. This project is a great example of how we can show respect for our elders and learn from them. But we cannot forget about the seniors who are struggling to make ends meet, despite the fact many have worked hard for many years. In their golden years, they should not have to stress about money. The Maple Ridge-Pitt MeadowsKatzie Seniors Network reports that many local seniors in their 60s and 70s are caring for their elderly parents in their 80s and 90s. And some seniors are still struggling to pay off their mortgages, while still others just need to find an affordable place to live. As people age, it should not be a time when they have to stress about housing, money, or looking after their elderly parents. They should have time to take care of themselves, enjoy their retirement, maybe even have something left over for a few luxuries. As a society, we have an obligation to make sure our seniors are well taken care of. – M.R.

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Garbage collection lauded Dear Editor,

I would like to commend Pitt Meadows staff, mayor, and council for their forward thinking and innovation regarding solid waste. As a family of eight, we generate our share of solid waste and we have always put out more recycling than garbage, recycling everything we possibly could. I will never forget the look on the recycling truck drivers face when he pulled up in front of our house one year after Christmas as he threw his hands in the air before depositing our small mountain of carefully sorted bags into his truck, or my satisfaction that even that week we only put out one can of garbage. I was very happy when Pitt Meadows rolled out our compost program. Our kids

got on board right away and boasted that we lived in a City that put their future and our planet first. Just looking down our street on garbage day you can see the positive impact this one change is having. Our regular weekly garbage for a household of eight is now less than half a standard can. Soon, Pitt Meadows will be going to recycle and compost pickup weekly and garbage pickup bi-weekly. And once again, I am impressed by the City of Pitt Meadows. I am proud of the effort that all of the residents make reducing our City’s contribution to the landfill. For those who still need a little encouragement, if a family our size can make this work, we know yours can too.

When I heard about this I was excited to do it.” Stushnoff and the Allan twins, who all go to Thomas Haney Secondary, are looking forward to the adventure in Guatemala. “We’re really excited to see how these people live their everyday lives,” Connor Allan said. “It’s going to be exciting.” Travel costs for each student total $2,500 and the 60 stoves cost $200 each. The teens have to raise $1,500 apiece to cover their portion of the trip and all

Joining the teens on the trip are Haney Rotary Club president Keesha Rosario, president-elect Ken Holland and Burlington, Wash. Rotary Club member Paul Bergman. Their fundraising continued with a car wash at Kirmac Collision this past weekend. A hot dog barbecue takes place this Saturday, June 8 at Coopers Foods (on 240th Street). Four Maple Ridge teens who grew up together will be hard at work next month in Central America, helping to make a difference in people’s lives. Daniel Clarke, Ryan Stushnoff and twin brothers Brendan and Connor Allan – local Grade 11 students who attended Alouette Elementary school together – have been chosen by the Haney branch of The Rotary Club to travel to Guatemala, where they’ll be installing wood-burning stoves in village homes. The project is part of the Rotary “Youth Experiencing Service” (Y.E.S.) program, partnering with the Hands For Peacemaking Foundation, From July 6 to 16, the students will be installing approximately 60 stoves in homes in remote villages in northern Guatemala, not far from the Mexican border. The stoves are going into village homes where people currently cook on open fires inside the houses, causing respiratory illness and injuries to kids from burns. Stushnoff is preparing himself for a visit to a very poor region of the world. “They don’t have a lot,” he said. “They basically

Burrards off to scintillating start

The Maple Ridge Burrards sit tied atop the Western Lacrosse Association standings early in the season. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

The Maple Ridge Burrards are the talk of the Western Lacrosse Association. With four victories in their first five games, the Burrards have already matched their win total from a dismal 2012 campaign that saw them occupy the cellar of the seven-team league with a 4-13-1 record. One of the key factors in the Burrards’ early-season turnaround has been the presence of their top offensive player, Curtis Dickson. The talented right-hander was limited to Maple Ridge’s final two games of the 2012 season, after

The hosts led 6-4 after two periods of play, increased their lead to 9-4, and led 13-8 with 4:32 to go in regulation before allowing the final two goals of the game. “Victoria has a very potent offence,” Fridge said. “Who do you cover in [Rhys] Duch, [Jeff] Shattler, [Cory] Conway, and [Scott] Ranger? This was probably the best offence we’ve played this year.” Duch and Shattler each scored twice for the Shamrocks. Conway was held to one goal. Corey Small scored a hat trick for Victoria in a losing cause.
