Special Olympians benefit from torch run

Adorned in ocean blue Tshirts, a collection of joggers basked under a late spring sun as they collectively pounded the pavement through Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. Law enforcement personnel from more than 30 communities around the province carried a small lit torch, and along with a message of respect and dignity for Special Olympics, as the Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through B.C. in early June. They travelled through town last Thursday. The Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland portion of the run from June 4 to 7 and covered 15 communities, from Chilliwack to West Vancouver. On June 6, runners alternated carrying the torch to Pitt Meadows City hall, then continued on to Maple Ridge.

north Albion in exchange for an amenity bonus. About $4.5 million could be raised for amenities if a proposal to allow more density in north Albion is approved by Maple Ridge council. District staff are recommending that council approve that all lots built under the density bonus program pay $3,100
per lot as amenity contributions. If all developers take advantage of the density bonus, when the area is completely built out, the District would have $4.5 million in amenity contributions. The area in question is north of 108th Avenue, and staff estimated that it would result in about 250 more houses than was originally conceived in the Albion

The BC Coroners Service has announced dates for a public inquest into the death of Angus David Mitchell. The inquest will take place from Nov. 12 to 15 in a Burnaby courthouse. Accident revives safety fears
A 12-year-old is in serious condition in hospital after colliding with a car Saturday. by Sylver McLaren

Erika Inzunza has had enough. The former traffic campaign captain for McClure and Kimola drives now has a crash she can refer to when discussing road safety in her own neighbourhood. Inzunza is the parent of a sixyear-old and runs a daycare. “I’m concerned about my kids and my neighbours’ kids,” Inzunza said following a Saturday afternoon crash between a longboarder and a car that left a 12-year-old boy in serious condition. “We wanted to prevent this from happening.” Inzunza said she doesn’t know where the victim lives, but it isn’t far away as he goes to Albion Elementary. “He came over to play and this is what happens.”
“In the past we have been asking for [the District] to do something – like a roundabout, four-way stop, or speed bumps,” Inzunza said, adding that the District said it would not put in speed bumps because that would hinder emergency vehicles. The helmeted boy, along with some friends, were riding their longboards down McClure Drive on their stomachs, according to a traffic sergeant with the Ridge Meadows RCMP. “When a car came along the boy was unable to stop for the vehicle and collided with the side of the car,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville. “The 12-year-old boy was travelling down a steep incline and simply was not able to stop in time before colliding with the car,” Somerville added. An air ambulance landed nearby in the Samuel Robertson Technical secondary field, transporting the boy to BC Children’s Hospital. The 20-year-old driver of the car remained at the scene, and is
cooperating with investigators. “This is the first serious longboarding incident Ridge Meadows RCMP have had to deal with, but police know this type of activity is going on, and it is not a safe practice,” Somerville said. “The boarder has a limited ability to stop for anything once the rider builds up speed, so they are not in total control. As well, many of the boarders are lying down on the board, which reduces the chance of a driver, or pedestrian, seeing them as they travel along the road.” District spokesperson Fred Armstrong felt ill about the crash. “Right now there’s a young man in critical condition as the result of an accident. When you hear that, it makes you feel sick,” he said. “In the short term the focus is on the family, let the police do their work, and wait to see if there is anything we can do to prevent this from happening [again]. It’s just a tragedy,” Armstrong said.

A Maple Ridge family woke up last Monday morning to the startling sight of a black bear opening up the doors to the family truck. Now, Rebecca Moore’s video of the deft bear opening the back door to her husband John’s truck is being passed around social media platforms. The video has been viewed more than 360,000 times. As the Moore family giggles in Ryan Steele the backRidge Meadows RCMP ground the bear climbs onto its haunches and pulls open the cab door. On her Facebook page, Moore said the bear had just opened the sliding back door of her van before the video captures it at the truck. Another image that went viral last week was that of Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Ryan Steele, who looked sharp in his stetson hat and his red serge uniform while riding a skateboard in the bowl known as The Action Park during the Pitt Meadows Day festivities. The wife of an RCMP colleague snapped the photographs of the 33-year-old constable, who is a threeyear member of the force.

Sprinkler does its job
No injuries resulted in last week’s fires in Maple Ridge.
A fire that could have been catastrophic in an unoccupied building in Hammond was extinguished by sprinklers, according to the Maple Ridge fire chief. What appeared to be an arson fire in a house under construction on the 20100 block of Ditton Street last Tuesday didn’t need the fire department to respond and the “sprinkler was credited with putting out [the fire],” fire chief Dane Spence said, adding it could have otherwise been “catastrophic.” The fire department, while they didn’t need to respond to the fire, did investigate and concluded it was most likely arson, Spence said. This was the second suspicious fire in Maple Ridge in a week – last Monday an unoccupied house on 122nd Street burned. After his investigation, the fire chief turned the file over to the RCMP. Later that week on Thursday, Maple Ridge fire crews were deployed for a third time, to a kitchen fire in Albion, bringing nearby residents out of their homes to watch. While it was reportedly a kitchen grease fire, causing minor damage but no injuries, witnesses from the area called it “big

School district 42 gave out its annual aboriginal achievement awards.

Excellence recognized
Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district gave out awards to its aboriginal students.
Twelve aboriginal students received the five-year award of excellence award at the recent Aboriginal Achievement Awards for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district. The awards night was held on May 30 at Thomas Haney Secondary, and, in addition to the awards of excellence, several other awards were given out. The Si:yam Cultural Leadership Award was given to two students: Andrew Sylvester from Pitt Meadows Secondary and Car Sinclair from Connex. The
Kwantlen Community Impact Award, which goes to a student who shows ongoing community involvement, was given to Kelly Paton, also from Pitt Meadows Secondary. The Spirit Eagle Award is given to a student who has overcome adversity in their life and still continues with their education. The award went to Josie Pearce from Garibaldi Secondary and Amos Topping from Westview Secondary. The aboriginal education department also holds a logo contest every year, and this year it was won by Charlie Watkins from Eric Langton Elementary and Raine Larson from Maple Ridge Secondary. The theme was All My Relations – We Are All Connected.

Wars thrive on forgetfulness Another D-Day anniversary has come and gone. This one was the 69th, and generally, not too much ado was made of it. The in-between anniversaries get less and less attention. The Second World War is now far enough in the past that serious note is only taken every five years – soon we’ll only bother at 10-year intervals… or not at all. Anybody remember the end date of the Napoleonic Wars? Do you even remember the year the little tyrant was finally taken down? Perhaps a handful of history majors do, but wars tend to lose their lustre after a 100 years or so, after all those who experienced them have passed into faded Scan this memories themselves. page with But that’s precisely why we should remember important dates like June 6, 1944. And we should forestall the growing misconception that that date marks the end of the Second World War. It wasn’t the end at all. Not even close. Indeed, it barely marked the beginning of the end stage of the war. The trek across Europe from the beaches of Normandy claimed tens of thousands of lives over the course of nearly a year, before the European armistices were signed – Italy on April 29, 1945, and the rest of Western Europe on May 7, 1945. Tens of thousands more had yet to die before the curtain was drawn on the Pacific theatre on Sept. 2, 1945. Those are dates that hardly anyone brings immediately to mind. Perhaps they are more mundane than the date that launched the largest-ever sea-borne military assault – an assault that was not anywhere near as successful as we are commonly led to believe through movies and popular history. But even the attention that D-Day commands is dwindling, as forgetfulness seems to grow… along with war. – B.G.

Deadly accident inevitable Dear Editor,
As you may already know, a terrible accident happened in the corner of McClure Drive and Kimola Drive (almost in front of my house) in which a car and a skateboarder collided. We want to ask the authorities to finally make a change in our street traffic control and signs. As we mentioned in meetings last year after the two crashes against the house of Mrs. Karen Rogers, 24602 McClure Dr., it seemed the authorities were just waiting for somebody to be killed or critically injured in order to go ahead and make a change. Well, that happened yesterday. We are urging the Engineering Department of the District of Maple Ridge and the RCMP (as partners on the Safer City program) to come forward and support us in order to make a change in this area, to prevent more accidents. Future in good hands I am a teacher at Pitt Meadows Secondary, and I heard about the good work a group of students have done that has gone unsung. I am speaking about the school’s Free The Children Club run by Sarah Fruean. This group, in particular Kelly Paton and Alex Auclair, have raised several thousand dollars on their own and spent countless hours of their own time to do so. It makes you feel good about the future, knowing that people like these Grade 12 students are part of it.

So, Senator Patrick Brazeau got handed $4,000 for an attorney to defend him. Why should the citizens have to pay for his defence? No doubt Senator Mike Duffy, he of Fluffy Duffy fame and the recipient of $90,000, will slither out of the mess he’s created. I suppose the treasury will take a hit to pay for his legal fees, too. Should I commit a crime, would the state pay the tab for my defence? Why not? Is that what equality is in Canada? Now it’s alleged that some folks orchestrated their daughter’s murder in India, where “honour” killings are closer to the norm… where many women have no say nor any value. They, too, want their legal fees paid by thee and me. Of course. If this doesn’t infuriate you, perhaps it’s because we’ve become so accustomed to it that it no longer has the power to make us sick. Lawn Sprinkling Regulations effective June 1st – September 30, 2013 Starting last year, Metro Vancouver has restricted residential lawn sprinkling hours between June 1 and September 30 to 4:00 am to 9:00 am. This is the time when the least amount of water used on lawns will evaporate and the most is absorbed. These restrictions help to ensure that the water demand does not exceed what our existing distribution system can deliver. Residential addresses: • Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4-9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. • Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4-9 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Non-residential addresses: • Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1-6 a.m. Monday and Wednesday. • Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1-6 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. • All non-residential addresses can also sprinkle 4-9 a.m. Friday. Only intervention from the Minister of Health could force hospitals to get rid of their parking fees, according to a legal opinion obtained by the District of Maple Ridge. In a five-page written opinion, Young Anderson, legal counsel for the District, explained that because Fraser Health Authority, which operates Ridge Meadows Hospital, is not a Crown agency, it is not subject to municipal bylaws. Therefore, the District can’t legislate parking fees at the hospital without a public health bylaw, which would require approval from the Minister of Health. The legal opinion was given in response to a question posed by the District of Maple Ridge, asking whether it has the authority to adopt a bylaw to prohibit Fraser Health from charging for parking at the hospital, or to limit how much can be charged for parking. The provincial public health regulations state that a municipality can’t adopt a bylaw pertaining to “any matter that may affect the personnel, financial or other resources of

Saturdays in June are often chosen for weddings, and local couple R. Rooster and Miss Henny Penny took advantage of the tradition. Amidst a large crowd of visitors at Saturday’s market in downtown Maple Ridge, the two exchanged vows to celebrate the relationship between agriculture and the Haney Farmers Market. Local kids from the Golden Ears Community 4-H Club took part in the mock ceremony held at the bandstand in Memorial Peace Park. Not only did the club kids hold up the wooden rooster and chicken cutouts, but they also brought sheep in tutus and a goat to celebrate. According to Eileen Dwillies, market manager, the idea to hold the “wedding of the century” came from a brainstorming session of the market’s marketing and promotions committee. “We are working on promotions to draw new people into the marketplace so that they can see our produce and artisan vendors,” she said. The thought that the fun event would appeal to a wider crowd paid off with more than 2,000 people coming to the market that day. After the ceremony,

Looking to give a new sport or activity, or more, a try? Then the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Interactive Sports Expo will be worth a visit. On the heels of a successful 2012 event, the expo returns to Pitt Meadows this Sunday, June 16 from noon to 4 p.m. Located at the Pitt Meadows Arena Complex and Athletic Park, this hands-on expo offers a look at what sports and recreation activities are available in the community. Roughly 30 exhibitors will showcase a whole gamut of sports and activities in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Rock climbing, lacrosse, gymnastics, ice hockey, archery, kayaking, canoeing, and martial arts are just some of the sports and activities being showcased at the expo. Free public skating is being offered during the event and there will be women’s roller derby demo. And at 11 a.m. guest speaker Tom Walker, the community recreation coordinator for the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, will talk about how communities and sport organizations can work together to define common goals. “Bring the family out and enjoy a great event,” said Perry Bateson, who has chaired the sports expo throughout its three-year existence. “It’s a great thing to do on Father’s Day, to come out and play sports. We’re really promoting sport organizations to promote their sports, get people to register and provide more information on how get Perry Bateson involved in that sport, for all Yuen’s ages.” The concept behind the expo was (and continues to be) to create an event that highlights participation and activity within the community, explained Bateson, the owner and instructor of Yuen’s Family Martial Arts. The expo has been “small to date,” Bateson said. “Anything takes time to grow,” he said. “We’ve had the same number of exhibitors, in the 30 to 35 range, with 400 to 500 people showing up. It’s been good and it’s been growing. This year we’re expecting it to be a lot larger.” Diversity is a key element to the expo. “What we’re really trying to do is, instead of having athletes focused on a single sport, is to get them to be more involved in the diversity of sport and be more physically literate,” Bateson said. Being multi-dimensional is conducive to building a better all-around athlete and person, Bateson said: “The research being done today across North America indicates that single-sport athletes is not the way to go. When you isolate a year-round athlete on one sport, that’s not working and it’s not the right strategy.” Bateson used arguably the greatest hockey player of all time as an example. “Wayne Gretzky’s dad took his skates away in April and didn’t give them back to him until September,” he said, noting that the Hockey Hall of Famer known as the “Great One” played lacrosse and baseball in the warmer months.
