Ball back in Bing’s court

A Pitt Meadows councillor was elected to the provincial legislature on May 14. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Pitt Meadows council was unanimous in its decision last week to throw the ball back into MLA Doug Bing’s court whether to continue on council or resign. At a council in committee meeting last Tuesday, a request from Bing, who was elected as MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows on May 14, to take a leave of absence was rejected with mayor and councillors all in agreement – the decision has to be confirmed at tonight’s regular council meeting.

Truck aids crews on rescue missions Maple Ridge Chrysler donated a three-quarter ton truck to local the search team. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Rob Blokzyl dropped by Maple Ridge Chrysler about five weeks ago to talk to the owner about a donation towards a new truck for Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue. While he was hoping for a monetary donation that would begin the fundraising, Blokzyl didn’t expect to walk out of that meeting with Ian Speckman with the promise of a brand new vehicle. “It’s pretty amazing what [search and rescue] do,” Speckman said. “If you can’t donate your time... you can donate your financial support.” The owner of Maple Ridge Chrysler pointed out that search and rescue crews aren’t very high profile and he wanted to help out the group “probably because no one pays attention to them until they need them.” Last week, the paperwork was finalized, and the local search team took possession of the heavy-duty Dodge Ram, three-quarter ton pickup worth $50,000. Rick Laing, manager of Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue, said

Rob Blokzyl (far left) and Rick Laing (far right) of search and rescue were extremely grateful to Ian Speckman, owner of Maple Ridge Chrysler, for a truck he donated to their group. he’s never in his 28 years known the volunteer group to receive this kind of donation. The donated truck will not only be able to just pull the team’s boat, but all the equipment needed for swift water rescue. Laing said the donation was “huge” and “timely.” The rescue crew is currently using a 1989 Chevy truck, which will now be donated to another search and rescue crew within B.C. “The team is still in shock – we’re overwhelmed by [the donation],” said Blokzyl, field super-

visor with search and rescue. The donation will save hundreds of hours of fundraising, he added. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue is made up of volunteers. Both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows municipalities help fund it, and they also receives gaming grants. However, a lot of its funds are raised by team members. The search and rescue group is now starting to fundraise for a specially built box for the truck to hold the swift water rescue equipment. Laing estimated it will cost about $20,000.

Golden Ears is one of only two Lower Mainland bridges tolled.

Transportation

Bridge’s tolls rise TransLink is upping the cost to travel the Golden Ears Bridge according to inflation. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge will go up again on July 15. The increase of five to 10 cents on the tolls will depend on the type of vehicle. According to TransLink, the tolling bylaw allows for an annual adjustment based on a rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which was about one per cent in the past year. A car with a transponder will pay an even $3 starting July 15, while a car that isn’t registered will pay $4.25 per crossing. Small truck toll rates will also rise five cents per crossing, whereas large truck tolls will increase by 10 cents. Tolls for motorcycles will not change. In 2012, there were 10.8 million bridge crossings, up 10 per cent from 2011. In the first quarter of 2013, there was an almost four per cent increase as compared to the same period in 2012. The bridge was completed in 2009 and at the time it was the only bridge in the Lower Mainland to be tolled. Since then, the Port Mann Bridge has been rebuilt and tolled.

JASMINE came to Katie’s Place because her owner was no longer able to care for her. She is a beautiful cat with mackerel tabby markings and subtle browns and oranges too. Not only is she pretty to look at but she’s a very sweet cat who enjoys lots of attention. She lived with several other cats so she would be good in a multicat home.

Little old MRS. POTTS came to Katie’s Place when her owner went into care. She’s a perky girl who will call out for your attention. If you don’t respond she will reach for you with her paw and gently pull you closer so she can have some cuddles. She is good with other cats and because of her age can be adopted as a permanent foster.

Our View

Nickels and dimes in focus TransLink is “adjusting” the tolls on the Golden Ears Bridge. “Adjusting” sounds much better than “increasing.” In its press release, the Lower Mainland’s authority in charge of transportation services notes that the increases are “slight.” Indeed, it’s only going to cost an extra nickel for most folks to cross the bridge – a dime for truckers with bigger rigs. It’s not a huge amount. Scan this Even for those who compage with mute regularly across the bridge, let’s say through a normal working year of about 250 days, that will come to $25. But the effect will be out of proportion with those dollars and cents. Some folks will shrug it off as an inevitable cost – and perhaps accept that it’s still better than the pre-Golden Ears Bridge days when travel times were dramatically longer, and even the lower cost of gas back then made the bridge toll a relatively good deal. But many people will groan about “another tax grab,” noting that we’re already on the shallow end of the TransLink service pool. The tolls, after all, initially kept cars off the bridge, despite shorter commutes and smaller gas bills. Use of the Golden Ears Bridge has been rising – to 10.8 million crossings in 2012, a 10 per cent increase over 2011 – after a less-than-enthusiastic start in its first couple of years. We recall when toll rates were increased to make up the difference between expected and actual numbers of crossings. Now the increased bridge use is being “adjusted” with another toll increase. It’s TransLink’s focus that needs to be adjusted. It needs to centre more on the realities of bridge-users’ perceptions, instead of nickel-and-diming motorists. Businesses in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows would like more than just commuters to cross that bridge, and any increases have a dampening effect. – B.G.

Taxation

Seniors pay for flawed pay scales

Dear Editor, Once again I find myself staring at the blank screen of my word processor, searching for the words that will impact our elected politicians – to wake them up to the reality of life for seniors on fixed incomes. Those people have worked all their lives, only to be taxed out of their family homes at a time when they should be enjoying their last years on this Earth. People who work for minimum wage, parents who can never afford to acquire a home for their families due to extreme taxation are all in the “gun sights,” so to speak. When I was young, we lived in Coquitlam, in a home built by my grandfather and my father with the help of inlaws. Seven children and Mom and Dad

Thanks for cleaning

Dear Editor, I want to use your pages to say thank you Mr. S., the man who is out day after day picking up litter through Kanaka Ridge, along 105th Avenue and up and down the Lougheed Highway. Almost every day we see him with his bag and picker, trying to keep our community clean and remove the litter that fouls our roadways and parks. I know he doesn’t seek recognition for this selfless act, but I wanted to say thank you personally to a man who faithfully, persistently, and quietly makes my community a better place to live. Unfortunately, there is always more for him to pick up, because others are so irresponsible. From my family to Mr. S.: thank you! Bob, Janet, and Laura Goos, Maple Ridge

made up a family of nine people. Dad brought home the bacon, and Mom took care of the family and the home. We lived a relatively good life on the one income, but there were also other aspects of life that helped to make life affordable. As an example, the men in the community got together, and with funding for building materials from the district, they built a firehall for our protection in and around Glen Drive and the east end. Employees of the district had full-time jobs, but they were not paid at the same scale as private industry. They were paid less, but enjoyed long-term employment security. (Dad was a machinist, and a municipal councillor with no pay). Dad could have been laid off any time the economy slowed down, and he had no guarantee of security. It was those industrial and commercial workers who paid the taxes that supported the civic structure. Civic employees paid taxes also, but not like the private sector did. Having just come through the Second World War and the Great Depression, families back then knew how to stretch a buck. They had no choice. Fast forward to today. Now, civic administrators are paid far above the private sector, and yet they still enjoy the security that they enjoyed back in the day. The private sector has seen economies grow, and they made gains, and economies crash, and they suffered the losses. Not the civic administrations. The entire philosophy of the remuneration of civic administrators is upside down and backwards. The private sector can no longer afford to support this flawed structure. The old saying, “We get what we pay for,” no longer applies, because if that were true, the amount we pay our administration of Maple Ridge would be reflected in property taxes at half the amount we pay today. I hope I live long enough to see substantial changes to the manner we are taxed, as a result of the new municipal auditor. It will come as no surprise when we find out our money has been mismanaged over the long run. Efficiencies of scale must be recognized and put into practice. If not, I can see a massive collapse of real estate values, as more and more seniors are forced to sell their family homes just to have enough money to eat, buy groceries, and pay the utility bills. As more and more are forced to sell, the value of real estate will crumble like a tsunami rolling over the Lower Mainland. This can’t be good for anyone. Mike Boileau, Maple Ridge

Changing times

Vice concept of in-your-face reporting proving popular, lucrative I suggest to readers who want to stay current on international events, that they tune into www.Vice. com. Their documentary report on the Pakistan/India border is enlightening. They go where no sane reporter would go or has gone before. Vice has come a long way from the free, underground 1990s newspaper in Montreal known as The Voice, a radical, in-yourface publication. Through the years, Shane dropped the “o” in The Voice, and the company grew from a “hipster’s bible” to a global brand with offices in 34 countries. With the success of the Vice series, which has been stimulated by its high-traffic, online viewership, it is about to spawn a 24-hour, terrestrial news channel available in 18 countries. When Robert Murdoch and other news world leaders stumbled across Vice’s connectivity, there were huge takeover offers. Two years ago a consortium including the founder of MTV invested a reported $50 million in Vice Media. The first thing they did was buy Vice.com (formerly a porn site – so cute). Apparently, the com-

his week let’s talk about Vice. Before I cause my supreme editor to come out of his chair again, I should explain it is not about “that kind” of vice. Last Friday, the news documentary Vice triumphantly ended its first season on HBO. It featured their “immersive” (their word, not mine) form of journalism. Vice may have conceived, implemented, designed, facilitated, or maybe just covered the incredible meeting between North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, and Dennis Rodman. Shane Smith, co-founder of Vice, is quoted as saying, “The thing is, Dennis Rodman is absurd. North Korea is absurd. And our whole mission statement at Vice is the absurdity of the modern condition.” (reality)

pany’s revenue in 2012 doubled to almost $200 million. Vice has had great success in attracting a young audience. Apparently, the 18- to 34-year-olds are somehow attracted to the honest, fearless, in-your-

face tabloid form of reporting. Go figure! Maybe that is what the community newspapers are missing. Their editorial content should be relevant to local issues. So after feeling the gentle tug of the muzzle, I have

decided that I am going to adopt the teachers’ approach. I am taking 10 weeks off and then going to decide if I am going to go on strike or not. And yes, I would talk about a 10-year contract. And I would suggest that all the

teachers who are taking time off, watch the Vice series and re-educate themselves on how lucky we all are. Just saying… Gordy Robson’s column appears Tuesdays in the print and/or online versions of The TIMES. Reactions can be emailed c/o editorial@mrtimes.com.

Actors Trying to get to Mainstage

Thespians with Emerald Pig Theatrical Society don’t have time to bask in the glow of victory from last month’s regional theatre competitions. Instead, the Maple Ridge-based drama club is devoting all its time and energy to its upcoming undertakings, explained producer and group founder Sharon Malone. “It’s a juggling act,” she said. At the regionals, their production of the two-person play Trying garnered four top honours and three honourable mentions, earning the local theatre group a chance

to compete at the provincials in Kamloops, which is coming up next month. Preparing to take the entire production on the road is a massive undertaking and it’s costly, Malone said, noting that the Pigs perform at Mainstage on July 9. Between rehearsals for their summer Bard in the Bandstand View photos production of MacBeth, the team is with hosting two showings of Trying at the Langley Playhouse, hoping to or raise much of the $3,000 needed for online Kamloops. Performances are on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22 at 8 p.m. Ian McAdie photo Tickets are $20 and only availEmily Doreen Wilson won outstanding supporting able through Brown Paper Tickets actress at the regional theatre competition, helping at www.brownpapertickets.com/ earn Emerald Pig Theatrical Society a chance to event/397282.

Liam Stroud is indicative of a new wave of Herculean-like baseball players. At 6’3” tall and a chiseled 205 pounds, the 18-year-old Maple Ridge resident looks more like a football linebacker or hockey power forward than a few notable pudgy MLB pitchers from eras present and past such as CC Sabathia (modern), Fernando Valenzuela (1980s and 90s), and the original “Behemoth of Bust” Babe Ruth (early 19th century). Instead, Stroud’s physique resembles that of one of his Langley Blaze predecessors Brett Lawrie, the strapping third baseman from Langley who is an everyday player with the Toronto Blue Jays. “I work out every day,” Stroud said. “I was always athletic, always played a lot of sports, but it’s only been the last eight or nine months or so where I’ve kind of focused on working out and fitness.” While his pitching arsenal includes a change-up and curveball, not surprisingly, considering his size, the right-hander’s breadand-butter pitch leaves his hand quickly and with volumes of velocity. Stroud said his fastball can hit a blurring 88 m.p.h. “I feel comfortable throwing it at any time,” he said, during a morning break in classes at Westview Secondary, where he is finishing up his Grade 12 year. His fastball has worked for him so far this B.C. Premier Baseball League campaign. Heading into last weekend’s action with the Blaze, he had won five of six starts with a 1.76 ERA, 43 strikeouts, 12 walks, with just 24 hits allowed in 43 innings pitched. On June 11 Stroud threw a complete game 5-0 win over the Coquitlam Reds, with nine strikeouts and five hits allowed. Stroud will start a new chapter in his ball career this fall when he heads to Niagara University on an NCAA Div. 1 scholarship. At Niagara, he plans on majoring in psychology with a possible minor in criminology, with the goal of, he said, “somewhere along the lines” of sports psychology, if a baseball career doesn’t pan out. “I’m nervous and excited,” he said. “I hope to become one of their starters by the end of my freshman year. I’m excited to go there. It’s going to be something new. But I’m nervous because it’s totally different, across the continent.”

Langley Blaze pitcher and Maple Ridge resident Liam Stroud, 18, will play NCAA Div. 1 ball with Niagara University. Troy Landreville/TIMES

Stroud flies out to New York Aug. 28. “It’s coming up quick,” said Stroud, who received plenty of exposure from NCAA scouts by playing in the BCPBL and for the Blaze in particular. He didn’t simply decide to play for Langley because of the club’s proximity from his hometown. The Blaze program is considered by many to be the best in Canada and Stroud feels he has improved under the tutelage of head coach/ general manager Doug Mathieson, coach Jamie Bodaly, and Blaze alumni Denver Wynn and Mike Ellis. “It’s a great place to play,” he said. “When I first went there [to Langley] in Grade 10 I threw kind of hard but my control was not there, at all. My numbers this year show how far I’ve come.” Stroud has come a long way from his early days playing baseball. He started at five years old as a third baseman and pitcher.

“I definitely developed,” he field, third base, and catcher, was said. “When I started with the the first B.C. player selected in Blaze, I was okay, but over the the 2013 MLB draft and second past couple of years with Doug Canadian overall. and Denver and Jamie… it’s all “We’re really good friends,” come together.” Stroud said. “We go to the gym Mathieson noted that Stroud is together and we’ve played togethbrimming with potential. er for a long time.” “He’s a hard-working kid,” Stroud hopes to follow O’Neill Mathieson said. “He’s got a major as an MLB draft pick in the notleague body and he’s certainly too-distant future. worked hard at it. He’s a kid who “I didn’t really expect to [get struggled through things early and drafted],” he said looking back at this year has really found his way. the past draft. “I feel that if I keep He’s a good teammate, a good kid working and keep progressing the who works hard, and he’s very way I have, then I have the potenpolite.
