Police hunt for gunman
‘Well-oiled’ fest draws big crowd
Mounties were shot at, in what RCMP are calling a brazen encounter in Whonnock Saturday morning. by Roxanne Hooper One of two men fleeing police in rural Maple Ridge this weekend opened fire on an officer and his cruiser before making good their escape. An RCMP officer was patrolling in the 25800 block of Spilsbury Road at about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning when – in what police call a chance encounter – he spotted two men hiding in the bushes, and “acting suspicious,” explained Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. When approached, they fled and opened fire. It’s believed there was one shot fired, which police confirm did not hit the officer or his cruiser. It’s unclear what kind of gun was used. “This is an overt act of violence towards a uniCpl. Alanna Dunlop formed police officer that Ridge Meadows RCMP will not be tolerated in our community,” Dunlop said. “Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident, but we are aggressively pursuing all leads to identify these individuals and hold them accountable for these violent actions,” she elaborated. Ridge Meadows RCMP, with the assistance of the Lower Mainland police dog unit, conducted an extensive search of the area, but were unable to locate the men, Dunlop said. The men are described as dark skinned and wearing dark coloured hoodies. As of Monday afternoon, police had no suspects. But the investigation is continuing, with the assistance of the general investigation officers and the Lower Mainland forensic identification service, she elaborated. It is believed the men fled from the area in a vehicle, but no description of the vehicle is available. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251, CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or report online at www. solvecrime.ca.

A two-day Caribbean Festival that took over a giant chunk of Maple Ridge’s downtown this weekend is being classified as “the best ever.” Attendance on Saturday leapt an estimated 20 per cent compared to the 2012 event, and spectators, vendors, and entertainers alike were saying how impressed they were with the 13th annual event, entertainment organizer Deddy Geese told The TIMES on Monday. “We had very high compliments from a lot of people. It was a resounding success,” he said, sharing praise with the rest of the “welloiled team” of committee members and volunteers who help make it all possible. It’s estimated that upwards of 20,000 people converged on the heart of Maple Ridge during the two days for music, ethnic food and vendors, as well as a plethora of family-oriented activities – all with a Caribbean theme. Geese described this year’s event as “spectacular,” and shared comments from bands and a few Caribbean DJs that the two-day lineup in Maple Ridge was being described as the best in Western Canada this year. “You can take a sort of pride with that,” he said. “It’s definitely a stellar event. It’s the best festival we’ve ever had in our 13-year history… Overall, I think the committee as a whole has put on View the best festival in 13 years.” photos Sitting back and taking in the with ambiance – from all the sites and smells, to the “incredible” sounds on stage – Geese said or online if he closed his eyes even for a moment he’d think he was actually in the Caribbean. The annual festival takes over Memorial Peace Park and a section of 224th Street for the weekend, and looking out over the sea of people late Saturday, organizing committee member Ineke Boekhorst said she was pleasantly “shocked” by the jump in attendance. “It’s very, very busy for a Saturday,” she said, explaining that when the event started it was only a Sunday festival. Six years ago, it was expanded to encompass Saturday as well, but attendance on day one is always a lighter. “Usually, Saturdays have been the slower, but that might have evened out this year,” Boekhorst said, “shocked” by the crowds. Part of this year’s success, she said, has to be the “extremely good” weather. But it can also be attributed to “the incredible lineup of entertainment,” the always expanding activities area, an increase in vendors, and an insatiable appetite by spectators for exotic foods.

The rating for the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society’s latest show is PS – pretty scary. Murder, blood, and gore with a cast including medieval royalty, demon children, and witches are all a part of the Shakespeare tragedy Macbeth – A Midsummer’s Nightmare staged at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows from July 18 to 21, and at the bandstand in Maple Ridge’s Memorial Peace Park from July 25 to 28. The Shakespeare tragedy tells the tale of Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, who plot to kill the king of Scotland, Duncan, putting Macbeth on the throne. Despite the murderous plot, Jason Etherington who plays Macbeth, suggested that his character is a misunderstood fellow, and much of his motivation is his love for his wife. “I think he’s profoundly misunderstood,” said the Pitt Meadows resident who is in the lead role. “He is a victim of his own weakness and events conspiring against him.” He added that Macbeth is a “likeable guy,” but he is drawn into darkness by degrees. Before every terrible act, he is deeply conscious of the repercussions, both spiritual and physical, but he does them anyway, Etherington said. Woman’s claim of park attack proven misleading Alanna Dunlop
An attack may still have occurred, but Mounties are saying that a woman’s claims that she was randomly assaulted on a Silver Valley walking trail last month are false. The community was abuzz in late June, after police reported a woman was accosted by a stranger midday on June 25 on the Anderson Creek
trail. Reports indicated she was able to flee after fending off and hurting her unknown assailant with her keys. While the investigation continues, it has obviously taken a different turn, RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said, confirming the complaint was misleading. The woman may have still been a victim of crime. That’s not clear yet,
according to police. “The police investigation has revealed there was no random attack on the Anderson Creek trail on June 25, 2013… This case concerned Ridge Meadows RCMP, and police investigators have worked tirelessly to get to the truth. I want to reassure our citizens that they are safe in our community.”

Bowling
Ridge rollers had a ball at B.C. Games
The Special Olympics BC Summer Games had a team full of local bowlers. by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@mrtimes.com
People didn’t have to look any further than Willowbrook Lanes in Langley to find the bulk of the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents who competed in this past weekend’s Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Summer Games. Langley hosted the 2013 Games from July 11 to 14, with the competition itself taking place Friday and Saturday. Ridge Meadows coach Barbara Coates said the five-pin bowling tournament was very exciting. “They [the local bowlers] have done really well,” she said around noon-hour Saturday. “They’re having a good time.” While almost all of the local bowlers were experiencing their first SOBC Summer Games, Coates has been part of four of these multi-sport competitions. The social aspect of bowling is what draws the athletes in, added Coates, who has worked with people with intellectual disabilities for the past 26 years and has been involved with Special Olympics since 1999. “All the friends get together, they bowl together and it’s a social atmosphere,” she said. “They are very enthusiastic and

enjoy the Games.” The competition had lots of strikes, spares, high fives, and hugs, Coates pointed out. The 2013 event marked Maple Ridge’s Derrick Terpsma’s second SOBC Summer Games and he said, “I don’t want to go home. It’s been good.” He added: “I’ve been bowling for about 17 or 18 years. I’m somewhat of a champion bowler.” Athletes and coaches from Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows, who were at the Games were: Five-pin bowling Michelle Harding, Yaulanda Hennessey, Gregory Honour, Brandon Knight, Brent Langridge, Ricki Nagra, Errick Preza, David Stevenson, Derrick Terpsma, and coach Diane Stevenson. 10-pin bowling Marc Volkman, and Nick Wocknitz Swimming Marianne Borenko, Alyssa Vanderklok, coach Marc Fisher, and coach Wayne Shufelt. A pair of 17th century bayonets topped the “unique” list of weapons turned in during a month-long provincial amnesty program. The amnesty was aimed at making the communities safer, said a local Mountie who added that Ridge Meadows RCMP hit the mark by taking in 24 firearms, two weapons, and 41 boxes of ammunition, including the bayonets from the 1800s. “It provided our citizens a safe way to dispose of unwanted firearms, weapons, and ammunition from their homes,” said Const. Mike Pedrosa. “Unwanted weapons are a potential hazard if they are not properly secured and stored. For example, they could be used by children, or perhaps stolen from their homes and used in the commission of other crimes,” Pedrosa explained. “The B.C. gun amnesty is an example of one additional method police are using to help keep our communities safe,” he said. British Columbians were encouraged to surrender weapons, as well as ammunition, by calling the local police to attend, secure, and remove the items. The province-wide amnesty saw 1,801 firearms, 155 other weapons, and about 30,700 rounds of ammunition collected.

Const. Mike Pedrosa showed two bayonets that were turned into the Ridge Meadows RCMP. In 2006, the number of firearms surrendered was much higher, with more than 3,200, plus another 725 unwanted weapons, turned in. There was also about 96,500 rounds of ammunition turned in during that same period – 48 of those guns and 21 boxes of ammo were collected by the Ridge Meadows RCMP. As with past campaigns, some other interesting items were turned in – beyond the bayonets. A machine gun was received by Kelowna RCMP. As well, historical firearms including a Lee-Enfield 0.303 rifle from the Second World War and a sixfoot-long military missile kept as a souvenir of a tour of duty overseas, were surrendered.

PUBLIC NOTICE
RECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT
This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, September 9, 2013 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, December 9, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make nonlawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.
Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. Registration applications are available from Elections BC. Who May Sign the Petition: Registered voters as of Monday, September 9, 2013 may sign the initiative petition. Our View
Women still get the blame It is astounding, in this day and age, with so much information so easily available to so many people, that one in five Canadians still believe that women who are sexually assaulted effectively “asked for it.” Nearly a fifth of Canadians, according to a survey conducted by the Canadian Women’s Foundation, still believe that victims of sexual assault are provoking their attackers through the clothing they wear or by their behaviour in public. It appears, according to the disturbing results of the survey, that many Canadians believe the clothing women wear, or the alcohol they consume, are the Scan this real culprits in sexually page with motivated attacks – not the men who molest or rape their victims. The Canadian Women’s Foundation study revealed that 19 per cent of the respondents believe women encourage sexual assault by getting drunk, 15 per cent said flirting gives men an excuse to commit sexual assault, and 17 per cent maintained that short skirts provoke sexual assaults. It’s the old “men simply can’t help themselves, so women ought to know better” defence. Particularly disturbing are figures that indicate some of the most archaic and misdirected understandings of the causes of sexual assault appeared among survey respondents aged 18 to 34 years. On this background, a woman’s false report of rape becomes a devastating testimonial entrenching such ignorance. In addition to the physical trauma they endure, real sexual assault victims commonly face serious long-term effects: depression, self-blame, shame, fear, and anger – all feelings fueled and exacerbated by stupid and misguided beliefs of many of their own friends and relatives. More men – and some women themselves – need to try harder to understand their mothers and sisters and daughters… and themselves. – B.G.

Citizens have right to information
Dear Editor, Do we not live in a democratic country, where access to information is guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? District Councillor Corisa Bell has proven that this does not exist in Maple Ridge. It is clear that the management style of senior staff is basically “my way or the highway.” If it is common practice to have the Committee of the Whole meeting on the municipal website, why is our representative on council being withheld the information by the censoring of its content.
Mayor Ernie Daykin needs to know that a mediator is not necessary – just a full disclosure of the content of the meeting, nothing more, nothing less. Grover Telford, Maple Ridge
Behaviour childish
Dear Editor, We live in the only area of the Lower Mainland where house prices have not increased in value, due to overbuilding. We have high taxes due to a lack of business development. And now we have a few people at city hall who are quickly becoming an embarrassment. This whole Bell/Daykin/

Responses continue to pour in from readers incensed by people who lock their dogs in the car on hot days. “I’d like to lock these people in the hot car. Leave them in there all day. Stupid people.” – Caterina Bonderud “F...ing doorknob! Smash the window then flatten the tires!” – Susan Bardossy Brooks “Give them a hefty fine, or better still, lock them in a hot car with no water and only the windows cracked a bare inch, and see how they like it. Plus, put their picture on the front page of the local paper, saying what they did.” – Joan Evans “Definitely have the animal seized, but I think a lifetime ban should be enforced. People that selfish and ignorant should never be allowed to own an animal. They look to humans for companionship and protection, and it’s unfair that they have to suffer because of a person’s stupidity!” – Tania Vollert “SHAMEFUL” – Sharon Gallant

Hot dogs cook in frying pan
Dear Editor, Thank you for speaking for those who cannot do so in human language [Hot walks not cool for canines, July 9 Odd Thoughts, TIMES]. Yes, the dog looks up at his master with adoration in his eyes, putting up with the burning of his paws and belly, all the while wearing a fur coat. Water, water, a kingdom for a slurp of water! There is a breeze up there where the six-foot, sandal-clad master walks; down on the hot sidewalk it’s a frying pan. Marina Wilson, Burnaby
Rule affair reminds me of my two 10- and 12-year-old kids. Mayor Ernie Daykin should have rebuked Councillor Corisa Bell during the meeting, if what she said was so offensive. That no one said a word leads me to believe she didn’t say anything wrong. L. Turner, Maple Ridge [Note: Fuller versions of these letters are online at www.mrtimes.com. Hospital lots
No need for parking fees
Dear Editor, I’ve been reading the letters and articles regarding the pay parking in the hospital lots. I share the frustration that people feel. I’m wondering how far afield the legal counsel explored, as both Mission and Delta have bylaws prohibiting pay parking in their hospital parking lots. A CBC documentary on hospital parking fees pointed out that, although hospitals get a percentage of the parking fees, parking corporations pocket the fines. If someone from Maple Ridge council is speaking to someone on Mission council, perhaps they could also ask them how Mission managed to develop such a responsible and well managed waste collection system that picks up garbage, recycling, yard waste, as well as kitchen waste. It would be nice if Maple Ridge could catch up. J. Lloyd, Maple Ridge
Fees unaffordable
Dear Editor, Keep up the fight. These parking fees [Parking boosts hospital budget, June 25, TIMES] are just another form of user fees, and there are so many people who just cannot afford them. Chris Bjarnason, Maple Ridge

Moms with autistic kids treated to a spa experience A local parent of an autistic boy banded her co-workers together to give women in similar circumstances a spa night out. Story and photos by Ronda Payne editorial@mrtimes.com

Ten moms, each a parent of an autistic child, were treated to chocolate-covered strawberries, appetizers, and chit-chat while having their tootsies tended to at the Sour Apple Nail Bar and Tanning Lounge.

arina Peyton knows all too well how hard it can be to take personal time when parenting a child with autism. Her oldest son, an eight-year-old, is autistic. Officially he was diagnosed as autistic at age] four, she said. “But there was just a really long waitlist. We started intense therapy at age two.” Peyton’s part-time job at the Sour Apple Nail Bar and Tanning Lounge in Osprey Village in Pitt Meadows offered the perfect opportunity to express that understanding to other moms View who may not have a chance photos with for much needed self-care. “We do an event each month,” Peyton said of the or spa and staff. online The twist in this case is that the events, planned by a different staff member each month, are generally intended to introduce new clients to the spa. The special evenings aren’t normally a function for a particular group, but Peyton was about to change that. “We all really love working here,” she said of herself and co-workers. “We do an event each month.” In January, she learned her month to plan the spa’s event would be July and she knew exactly what she was going to do. She would give other moms of autistic children a treat in the form of a pampering night out. “I know how hard it is to take time for yourself when you have an autistic child,” she said. Five estheticians focused on making the moms feel relaxed and cared for in their two groups of five, Wednesday evening. “I met most of them tonight,” Peyton said of the 10 moms who were treated to pedicures, chocolate dipped strawberries, appetizers, and a range of beverages. continued on page A15…

On Friday a local business organization announced a change of address that will take effect Aug. 15. For decades, 22238 Lougheed Hwy. has been the home to the chamber of commerce, and now they are saying it is “not financially viable” to repair the structure. “It smells like mold,” president Ken Holland said of the soon-to-be former building, which is nestled between the Chevron gas station and the Haney Public House. “When you leave the building it sticks on you, your clothes smell like mold,” Holland added when talking about the structure a couple of weeks ago before the decision to move was made. “The board felt the current site is no longer conducive for chamber operations and upgrading the building was not financially viable,” the Chamber of Commerce Serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows announced. The chamber is moving to 12492 Harris Rd. in Pitt Meadows, home of Tourism Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and the former home of the Pitt Meadows Economic Development Corporation.

The Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is relocating from this building on Lougheed Highway to the Tourism site in Pitt Meadows next month. That building is also the former home of the Pitt Meadows chamber, which housed the organization prior to the two chambers merging almost a decade ago. There’s a second office that the chamber is going to be moving into, said Kristina Gervais, executive director of Tourism Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. “It’s a good partnership and having the chamber here will attract other business people,” said Gervais. “One of the things we do well is find strengths in partnerships. We will look at what programs we can work on together and reinforce what each organization can do for the businesses involved,” explained Gervais, adding she hopes people will see them as separate entities.

Teams work together on Cliff Falls rescue by Sylver McLaren
smclaren@mrtimes.com
Ridge Meadows Search & Rescue joined forces with Maple Ridge firefighters to rescue an injured hiker who fell at Cliff Park this weekend. About 10 search members and 10 firefighters arrived at the easterly section of Kanaka Creeek Regional
Park around 5 p.m. on Sunday and worked together to help pull a man with a broken right arm to safety. “It was very steep terrain, a difficult lift,” said Maple Ridge fire chief Dane Spence of the 25100 116 Avenue location. The fire crew went to the bottom of the falls (about 30 or 40 feet) ,while SAR members worked on the rigging
and hauled the victim up to safety. “It went like clockwork, we integrate well because we have all the same standards. The basics are all the same,” said search and rescue manager Rick Laing. The victim was taken to hospital, where he was treated for a broken arm and minor bumps and bruises.

Treatment of diabetes in cats will likely require twice-daily injections with insulin. Diet is also key to controlling diabetes. Cats should be fed a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Reducing the risks by controlling weight and certain medications that may predispose cats to diabetes is also very important. Initially the cat may have several visits to the hospital to regulate the glucose levels, and to determine the most appropriate dose of insulin needed. It is important for the owner to monitor the water consumption and urine output as well as body weight. Never change the dose of insulin without consulting with the veterinarian. If a cat receives too much insulin the blood-glucose level could drop dangerously

for diabetic cats, it can be quite rewarding for the cat owner and these cats can live a normal healthy life. Compared to humans and even dogs, cats are relatively easy to treat as diabetics. Some cats have been known to have transient diabetes and may even get over it with proper diet and weight loss – however this is less common.

If a cat shows these signs, you should administer a tablespoon of corn syrup. If the condition does not rapidly improve you may need to see you veterinarian. Although long-term treatment is required

iabetes mellitus is the second most common endocrine disease in cats. It is a disease of the pancreas. The pancreas has two functions. One to produce digestive enzymes to help us break down our food, and the second is to produce insulin, which regulates the level of glucose or sugar in the bloodstream. In simple terms, diabetes mellitus is caused by a deficiency of insulin production, which leads to elevated blood levels of glucose and the inability of the body to use the glucose as an energy source. The most common form of diabetes in cats is Type 2 – in which the body still does produce some insulin, but not enough and there is a delayed response in producing it or the tissues are resistant to it. This is more common in obese cats. The most common signs seen in a cat with diabetes are increased thirst and urination. Weight loss is also common and some cats may have an increased appetite. The diagnosis of diabetes is made by having the blood-glucose levels measured. It may require several measurements to confirm a diagnosis. In some cases, we check blood fructosamine levels, which give us a more accurate idea of how high the glucose has been over the past five days.

KATIE’S PLACE CELESTIAL came to Katie’s Place because her beloved owner had gone into a care facility and was no longer able to care for her. Celestial was devastated and spent the first few days hiding underneath a couch. It took some time but Celestial has shown us how affectionate and loving she really is. She doesn’t socialize much with the other cats in her pen but she does enjoy human company. Come meet this beautiful cat with amazing green eyes and a heart of gold.

INDIGO is a very beautiful and shy young cat. She came to us from another shelter as they believed she was a feral (wild) cat. They were wrong. Although Indigo will probably never be a lap cat she is seeking out attention and enjoys pets. She would do best in a quiet home with a cat savvy individual who understands she needs space. She would probably also love a mellow feline companion to spend her time with. Indigo will lighten up any home.
TWEETY PIE and her brother Sylvester are one of the most beloved duos of all time at Katie’s Place. This adorable brother and sister are extremely sweet and gentle cats. Tweety Pie has the cutest meow you will ever hear and her brother Sylvester is a handsome fellow. They are mellow, well-behaved, low maintenance and they love to cuddle and play. Give this pair another a chance to have a loving home where they will be safe forever.

Sweet one-eyed SHANE is still with us. This poor guy has been at the shelter far too long. He did find a home but as it turns out he was quite dominant with the other felines in the home and came back to us. If you are looking for a single cat that will be happy just chilling on a sunny window sill this is the boy for you. He’s mellow and easy going and just needs a bit of space he can call his own. Shane will make a great buddy to hang with and maybe watch a game on TV.

Burrards fall below .500 mark It was a rough weekend for the Maple Ridge Burrards. The community’s Western Lacrosse Association team was on the wrong end of a pair of one-goal games, falling 7-6 to the Coquitlam Adanacs on Saturday in Coquitlam, and 10-9 to the visiting Nanaimo Timbermen Sunday at Planet Ice. The losses drop the Burrards’ record to below .500, at 7-8, with three games remaining in their season. The Burrards, who sit alone in fourth place in the WLA, return to action this Friday when they visit the Burnaby Lakers. Then, on Sunday, the Maple Ridge senior A squad hosts Coquitlam at Planet Ice. The freshest face at BC Superweek, which wrapped up over the weekend, belonged to a Maple Ridge rider. At 14, Maggie Coles-Lyster, flew her Local Ride Racing team colours at B.C.’s biggest cycling event. Her first elite-level competition was last Wednesday night, the Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix. Riding in a field of more than 60 international-calibre cyclists, Coles-Lyster competed in front of thousands of spectators along the short, fast, and cobblestonestrewn course in downtown Vancouver’s historic Gastown district. Coles-Lyster watched cycling idols including Pan Am Games gold medalist and Canadian Team member Steph Roord race furiously around the 1.2-kilometre loop last year, when the renowned event returned in 2012 after a Troy Landreville/TIMES three-year hiatus.
