A Pitt Meadows Christmas on Friday night was the launch of the Pitt Meadows centennial celebrations – on April 25, 2014, the City turns 100. About 2,600 people were at Spirit Square to see the arrival of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus and take in some holiday cheer for the fifth year running. But the Christmas event also served as the first centennial celebration, and next year’s will be the grand finale, said Michael Hayes, who, in addition to being president of the Pitt Meadows Community Foundation – one of the Christmas event’s organizers – also co-chairs the centennial committee. Hayes was impressed by the turnout and the entertainment – especially that from the younger participants, including Showstoppers,

A postal carrier was robbed and assaulted on Thursday in east Maple Ridge. Ridge Meadows RCMP and Canada Post Securities and Investigations Unit are currently investigating the robbery, which took place around 1 p.m. while the postal worker was delivering mail to a community mail box near 116th Avenue and 239th Street. The postal worker was approached by two men who demanded mail and mail keys. During the theft, one of the men struck the victim in the head with a hard object. After the assault and theft, the suspects got into a grey car and drove off. “This brazen, midday attack is very concerning for police and our community,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. The thieves made off with some mail, Dunlop said. The postal worker was taken to hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, she elaborated. Anyone with information can call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251, or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave a tip online at www. solvecrime.ca.

It begins around Remembrance Day and lasts until early January. It’s the Christmas display at the home of John and Susan Russell. John, a 30-year resident of Maple Ridge, has lived at his current address for the past seven years. He said his display is constantly evolving and changing and that he’s not quitting any time soon. “I’ve been building this collection for about 15 years,” he said. “No two years are exactly the same. Something will get removed and another item will replace it.” He added that many of the decorations are souvenirs of vacation trips that he and his wife have taken. There are other decorations unique to his display as well. “The Santa statue and the Snowman are movie props that I bought from CanAm,” he said. The display is not simply just for show, however. Russell said in addition to being fully interactive and family-friendly, he also uses it as a way to collect donations for the Friends In Need Food Bank. “There’s bins outside with signs on them that I put out every evening and take in every night,” he said. Russell noted that the idea for

the donations came from a different but also popular celebration: Halloween. “I had always collected for the food bank during Halloween and thought, ‘why not involve Christmas?’ It’s the season of giving after all.” Regardless of which display it is, Russell said both are incredibly popular and people eagerly look forward to his work. “We have people that come by at Halloween and tell us they can’t wait until Christmas and people will ask us at Christmas what we’re doing for next year’s Halloween,” he said. For those who want to check it out themselves, the display runs nightly at 23050 125A Ave., starting at sundown, seven days a week until early January.

Christmas theft latest in disturbing trend Neighbours come together to help replace a family’s stolen decorations. by Eric Zimmer editorial@mrtimes.com
When 19-year-old Eric Moffat left for school on the morning of Dec. 3, he stepped outside and got an unfortunate surprise. His family’s front lawn – usually adorned with Christmas decorations this time of year – had been stripped clean overnight by thieves. Moffat guessed that between $500 and $1,000 worth of goods were stolen. Items taken included a few inflatable decorations such as a six-foot tall Santa and an 11-foot Christmas tree. For Moffat’s neighbours in west Maple

Eric Moffat stood in front of the replacement display generously donated by his neighbours. Ridge’s McKinney Creek Estates, this theft is just the latest in a disturbing trend that’s been plaguing the complex during the past three months. There’s been multiple garage and car thefts, said Gail Salconi, a neighbour of the Moffats and a member of the strata council.
“But this is the first time they’ve gone after Christmas stuff,” Salconi explained, believing two different types of thieves are at work. The first group seem to be people who “are going after the tools and contractors,” she said. The second, she speculates, is just kids pulling a nasty prank. “All the timers and expensive cords were left. It was just the figures that were taken – like a grab and dash.” Moffat said he and his family have been building on the display since 2005 or 2006, and have never had an issue. Some unexpected good has come out of this, though. Salconi said the thefts have actually brought the strata community closer with about half of the 34 neighbours in the complex coming together to buy new decorations for the Moffat family.

Santa’s arrival heralded by screams Thousands came out to welcome old St. Nick to town on Saturday. by Eric Zimmer editorial@mrtimes.com
The air was cold but the hearts of those who came to downtown Maple Ridge Saturday night were warm. Thousands came to celebrate at Christmas in the Park in Memorial Peace Park late in the afternoon, then hung around to watch Santa Claus arrive during the evening parade. Entertainment coordinator Nigel Tucker said the
festival committee puts this event on every year for “the love of the community.” “The crowd tonight is really good,” he told The TIMES. “I’m really happy with the way everything has come along.” Performers entertained on the bandstand until the parade began. St. Patrick’s school choir sang a selection of holiday favourites. And local singing talent Lydia Querengesser serenaded the crowd with her jazz take on well-known Christmas carols, while Darian Jane White got the crowd grooving with Christmas and pop songs.
The festivities also included a live nativity scene, courtesy of the Burnett Fellowship Church, one of the sponsors of the event. Featuring live animals, actors, and a narrator, the presentation told the story of the first Christmas. For the Rauch kids, Ethan, Isaiah and Anaya, the evening was about one thing, though: the arrival of Santa. “We come every year,” said mom Mandy. “They’re excited to see Santa and the parade.” The Rauches weren’t the only ones excited to see him, and by 6 p.m, 224th
was filled with people huddled together eagerly awaiting the arrival of St. Nick. The local Scout troops, a scrap metal business, a local Christmas tree farm, a home nursing business, and the firehall were just some of outfits that made their way along the route. Appearing in true Santa fashion, the jolly old elf cruised by in a sleigh pulled by eight miniature donkeys, and cries of “Santa!” could be heard. “I’ve worked this event for four years now and this is the best one we’ve had yet,” Tucker said.

Food, new toys, and cash are collected each year by local firefighters during their massive one-day fundraising blitz called Firefighters for Families. This year’s event is being held Saturday, Dec. 14. is a combined effort between both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows firefighters, because the food bank and Christmas hamper society serve both communities. In Maple Ridge alone, $146,000 has been raised since the event’s inception in 2002. “I believe the community is so generous because they know that all of the funds that they donate go to help families here,” Juurakko
said, noting this year’s cheque will be presented on stage when the CP Rail Holiday Train rolls into town on Sunday, Dec. 15 in Port Haney. “It’s something we’ve been doing for a long time,” Pitt Meadows’ assistant fire chief Brad Perrie said of his team’s involvement. “We really couldn’t do this without the public’s support,” he said. “Every little bit helps.”

Our View
Saving lives not difficult
You can save a life today. When we think of saving a life, we think of someone jumping into freezing water to rescue people trapped in a car that slid off an icy road, or a firefighter running into a burning building to pull out a child. Most of us will never attempt a daring rescue, yet any of us – by registering ahead of time – could save one or more lives through organ donation. Last week, some of the people who are still here because they received the gift of life took part in Operation Popcorn, visiting B.C. hospitals, including a stop at Ridge Meadows Hospital, to deliver festive tins of popcorn to staff in hospital intensive care units, emergency departments, and operating rooms. In 2013, 314 organ transplants were performed throughout B.C., up from 284 the year before. Some, such as 120 kidney transplants and three liver transplants, were from living donors. But most, including 95 kidney transplants, 53 liver transplants, 19 heart transplants and 15 lung transplants, were from deceased donors. As of November, 507 B.C. residents were on a wait-list for a transplant. According to Transplant BC, 85 per cent of B.C. residents support the concept of organ donation, yet only 19 per cent have registered their decision. You can do so online with your CareCard in less than two minutes at transplant.bc.ca, or through the form that comes with your driver’s licence renewal. “My husband, Ted, had his single lung transplant six-and-a-half years ago, and it changed our lives forever,” Lynne Fraser of Nanaimo said. “We celebrated our 40th anniversary, Ted had his 65th birthday, and our sons, Jeff and Matt, have a father. We feel very fortunate to join other transplant families to say thank you to the medical staff who are so important to organ donation and transplant.”

A treat to reinforce memories As this will be our family’s first Christmas without Dad, I thought I’d share one of his favourite – and de rigueur for the entire family – Christmas/New Year’s Eve recipes. Preparing oliebollen involves deep frying, which is not considered very healthy these days… but Dad was just a month shy of his 99th birthday when he left us this summer. Perhaps the reason he lasted so long despite the oliebollen was because, like most Dutch families, we only made – and ravenously devoured – the delicious morsels at Christmas and on New Year’s Eve.
Heat oil in a deep fryer (or a deep pan… but be VERY careful!) Get the oil to about 350ºF – not hot enough will leave your oliebollen raw in the middle and unpalatably oily on the outside, and too hot will burn the outside of your oliebollen, the oil, and maybe your house! A trick I’ve heard of (but have not yet tried, personally) is to stick the wrong end of a wooden spoon in the oil – if the oil is hot enough, bubbles will form around the wood. Using two tablespoons (greased by dipping them into the hot oil), scoop and release blobs of dough from the bowl into the fryer. Dear Editor, One morning, 56 years ago, newly arrived from England and working afternoons, I walked into Clark’s Clip Joint (now the Stag Barber Shop) and asked Al if he and the staff would teach me how to be a good Canadian. They took the job on with enthusiasm, and morning after morning, I learned a little more about the forest industry, the river, the valley, the town of Haney itself, and of course, who not to vote for. The other day, I called in to see Al, we talked, and I was happy for both of us when he told the others in the shop that I had done well since I came here. Dear Editor, I completely understand Tim Tyler’s frustration when it seems like an eternity that a government that you don’t agree with is in power [Excited to stimulate debate, Nov. 28 Yours Truly, TIMES]. That was my experience when the NDP was the B.C. government: the constant anguish-making debacles, some bordering on criminal, more and more every day, that mercifully, finally ended. I’m sure Tim will experience that release one day, as politicians come and go and governments are transitory. That’s precisely why I wrote [Tell Tim politics not for him, Nov. 21 Letters, TIMES]. He is a lovable, caring guy. It comes through in his humour and personal stories. Of course, “opine” away. I love debate and engagement, but his talent as an uplifting wordsmith is sorely needed in today’s world.

B.C.’s child poverty record embarrassing Dear Editor, With the joy of the Christmas season fast approaching, remember those who are less fortunate in our society. There are many in our communities who are not so fortunate to have family close by, or good, decentpaying jobs. Many are the victims of the countless cutbacks in government social spending that marginalize and make life more difficult
for the poor and needy. All of those cutbacks are happening by right-wing governments that care little for the average citizen who struggles to pay hydro and heating bills. B.C. has the highest rate of child poverty in Canada, something we all should be ashamed of. They make it easier for their corporate sponsors, with plenty of tax breaks for them; it’s called “corpor-

The TIMES posed a question to Facebook followers, asking if the era of having pictures taken with Santa a thing of the past. “Um, have you checked out Valley Fair, it’s a two-hour lineup sometimes.” – Sherri Robson “You can get a buzzer to take around the mall with you! To save the lining up… very civilized.” – Jill Dykes “Even with the buzzer, you can wait up to two hours. We did last year, but still get our pictures with Santa done.” – Jaimie Waddell Libby “Depends on the Santa experience.”
– Debbie Seibert
“Definitely check out Santa at Valley Fair. He’s amazing.” – Valerie Wilkes “We stopped mall Santa pics prob when my kids were around 5.” – Kassandra Antone “Lineups at some malls! Lots of older folks getting into the Christmas spirit, too, by having photos taken with Santa!” – Charlene McMorris

ate welfare.” They are the ones who spend millions of dollars on the negative TV ads you see at election time, and need to be paid back, by “their” politicians. And paid back, they are! So, your right-wing governments then proceed to cut services or make the rest of us pay more and more for all of the services we need to survive on. It’s not rocket science to figure out why we’re all having to pay more for life’s essentials these days. But when you’re poor, it becomes increasingly difficult to pay those hydro bills and still be able to feed yourselves or family. The rich elites have no problem, because they are living the good life on all of those tax breaks from “their” politicians whom they’ve funded to the tune of millions. Those millions would go a long way to help the poor in our societies, who are going hungry or without heating. It seems that insatiable greed is the ruling paradigm of the rich and their bought-out politicians these days. Let’s change this reality now, and create a better Canada for all! John E. Taxpayers, consider storming District hall
Y
esterday, Maple Ridge council started its annual public budgeting process. When it is over, council will decide how much our property taxes are going to increase next year. The answer is, a lot! While Pitt Meadows council seems to have understood the public’s anger about property tax increase, Maple Ridge council still doesn’t get it. Pitt Meadows has underway the largest new industrial development in the valley. They have just got the Agriculture Land Commission to designate more land commercial than Maple Ridge has in its core. They seem to have a vision, which should lighten the burden on residential taxpayers in the City of Pitt Meadows. The public process Maple Ridge council is going through has become incredibly transparent with so much information that it boggles the mind of anybody trying to understand it. A simple question like, “How much did we spend this year compared to last year?” leads to a half hour discussion of reserve funds and budget allocaby Gordy Robson tions. Go to their website. The bureaucracy of the municipality, by its culture, sincerely believes that property taxes should increase at least four or five per cent every year to serve the community better. This belief is reinforced by the senior bureaucrats our town has, who make well over $100,000 per year, our CEO over $200,000. This year council must have been given a wake-up call, because about a month ago they publicly raised the issue about the lack of industrial and commercial development in Maple Ridge. (As if this is the first time they knew this.) Probably the bureaucrats have explained to them that, because of the lack of that kind of development, residential property taxpayers will again have to carry the burden. If you examine your tax bill in detail, you will discover that, with the regional government and utility fees, the increase will be much more than five per cent. The mayor and council having been told they have to publicly justify an unreasonable tax increase again, in their frustration, they resurrected the issue of industrializing the Pelton lands. The idea that council would re-raise this issue a month after they gave up their (our) local rights to rezone land like this to the Metro Vancouver brings their credibility into question. It is disappointing to see that council has another study underway that will give them no more information than they already have from the previous studies. Council has a current opportunity to rezone the 52 acres owned by the department of highways (which were bought for the bridge that has since been built to Pitt Meadows) to the best use for the community. It is interesting to note in this discussion about industrial lands that none of the councillors are prepared to discuss the empty industrial park at north 256th Street, which is empty because there is no access – or the south Albion industrial area, which will only succeed with an overpass and flood protection. If you are upset about your property taxes, now is the time to storm the municipal hall. Whether it be by email, phone calls, or going down and participating in the public process, the alternative is to lie back and let them have their way with you again. Just saying…

For the 1st Haney Scout Troop, the Grinch exists – and he rides a bike. On Thursday night, a thief broke into a fencedoff area at 216th Street and Lougheed Highway where the scouts have their Christmas tree sale and stole a Fraser Fir, a $39 tree. Christi Goncalves is helping out at the Christmas tree sale at Cap’s Westwood Cycle in
Maple Ridge and was at the lot Friday morning. Earlier that morning, Goncalves’s husband noticed that the shelter’s fence connected to the Cap’s building had been pulled forward and it looked like the thief had “scooted along between the wall and the shelter, grabbed the tree and took it out the back way,” Goncalves explained. The crime didn’t go unnoticed though. “The funny thing was,” she added, “one of our Beaver leaders, her husband was driving by last night and saw the guy loading the tree onto his

Maple Ridge fire chief Dane Spence received a gift from five-year-old Hunter Oake last week. Mom (Sandra) was clearing out some stock she still had from a former liquidation store she operated, when the Harry Hooge kindergarten student saw a statue of a firefighter and angel and insisted it be given to the local firefighters who he sees as angels. Mom immediately took Hunter to Firehall #1 on 227th Street, so he could personally deliver the gift. After receiving the statue on Thursday afternoon, Spence took young Hunter on a tour of the firehall. Roxanne Hooper/TIMES

Figure skating
Ridge skater shares spotlight with icons Friday night in Langley, a teen from the Maple Ridge Figure Skating Club experienced what may well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
The chill that sunk its frozen teeth into Maple Ridge was a sampling of what life was like for Emily Bator growing up in Grande Prairie, Alta. Taking into account that folks in Grande Prairie are braving finger-numbing temperatures in the minus-mid-20s Celcius on average, it’s T-shirt weather, here. With this in mind, Grande Prairie is an ideal training ground for a figure skater. “It snows there eight months out of the year,” related Bator, a 17-year-old member of the Maple Ridge Figure Skating Club who was a guest performer at Friday’s Holiday On Ice show at the Langley Events Centre. “Ice sports were one of the only things you could do there. There are ice rinks outside we would skate on. It was a community thing.” Bator felt the heat Friday night, skating in front of scores of fans while sharing ice time with figure skating icons including Elvis Stojko, Kurt Browning, and 2010 Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette. “It was awesome,” Bator said. “The jumps weren’t as great as they were in practice but the performance definitely was there. At the end of the program, I didn’t even care. It was so much fun.” HOI organizers asked the Maple Ridge club to enter one of its skaters in the show and Bator was tapped. “They were trying to figure out who would be best person to

Julianne Delaurier won the event with Kelsey Wong placing second. Both skaters compete internationally for Canada. “B.C. is a powerhouse in figure skating right now and if Emily had competed or lived in another province, she would be moving on to compete against the rest of Canada,” MRFSC coach Regan

Flames 2-0 in December
The month of ho-ho-ho and mistletoe has been a jolly one so far for the Ridge Meadows Flames. The Flames are 2-0 in December after blanking the Port Moody Panthers 5-0 Friday at Planet Ice and edging the host North Delta Devils 2-1 Saturday at Sungod Arena. The victories improve the junior Bs’ record to 9-12-2-3. The Flames sit alone in third place in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Harold Brittain Conference, nine points behind the second-place Abbotsford Pilots and 17 back of the first-place Aldergrove Kodiaks, who own a league-best 19-4-2 mark and are riding a nine-game unbeaten streak. The Flames will be looking for their third straight victory this Friday, Dec. 13, when they host the Grandview Steelers at Planet Ice. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Hoop happy The Pitt Meadows Marauders lost 72-64 in overtime to the Gleneagle Talons Dec. 3 in Fraser Valley Quad A senior boys basketball action. Here, Mark Ashamalla pressured Talons’ ball carrier Brenden Bailey. In their second exhibition game, the Marauders fell 79-63 to the 2013 B.C.
