Debris stuck on tracks

A piece of metal debris got caught on the CP Railway track at the 240th Street on Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m. When a train came to the crossing it “made contact” with the casing, according to CP Rail spokesperson Salem Woodrow, who added there were no safety concerns. • More at www.mrtimes.com
At the turn of the century, a group of community volunteers got together on Christmas Eve and hosted a free, non-denominational, wheelchair-accessible Christmas dinner. It was the first Christmas Haven. Promoting a sense of belonging and friendship on a night that can be hard for people with little or no support, the event has happened every year since. Still 100 per cent volunteer driven, this year’s Christmas Haven will be held tonight (Dec. 24) at The ACT in

downtown Maple Ridge, at 11944 Haney Pl., from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition to a complete turkey dinner, children’s activities, and a visit from Santa, there will also be a variety of live entertainment. Pam Burns, this year’s entertainment organizer for the event, said the lineup will include the Maple Ridge Dance Circle (MRDC) local guitarist/singer Mike Walker, local couple Mike and Suzy, who entertain with a ukulele and guitar, Peter Tam, and many more. Susan Mitchell, from MRDC, said this is something that the school has been a part of for the past “six or seven years.” “It’s something the kids enjoy doing,” she said. “I just really think our kids know how fortunate they are and like to give back to the community.” Steering committee member Corisa Bell called the event an “incredible community celebration,” and encourages anyone in the community who may be alone that evening to come join the celebration. Last year, the event drew more than 300 people. Bell noted the event even offers a free taxi service for those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend. Those in need of a ride to the event can call 604-4658085 to have their name put on the list. For more information about Christmas Haven, go to www. christmashaven.ca.
Metro Vancouver
Region adds to Widgeon park reserve The wilderness reserve north of Pitt Meadows will be expanded.
Metro Vancouver has bought almost eight hectares of marsh and uplands on Pitt River, to help protect ecologically important wetlands and accommodate recreational activities in the future. The eight-hectare property will be added to Widgeon Marsh Regional Park Reserve. The regional park reserve will expand to 627 hectares.
“Our regional parks protect significant natural features, ecosystems, and landscapes in B.C.’s most populated urban region,” said Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore. “Our parks also provide recreational opportunities – places where we can experience and learn from nature. These natural environments make our region more liveable and help define who we are.” The newly acquired land in the city of Coquitlam may one day be used as a staging area for hiking, biking, picnicking, and bird watching, as well as for water access for the
public to scenic areas of Widgeon slough and marsh. “The region’s forests, fields, coastlines, wetlands and watercourses are integral pieces of a habitat network for fish and wildlife,” said Heather Deal, chair of Metro Vancouver’s environment and parks committee. Regional park reserves are open after management plans are in place. Currently, Widgeon Marsh Regional Park Reserve is not open to the public. For more information, go to www.metrovancouver.org.

Moving to a new community can mean a lot of changes. But when Joan and Ab Fulton moved to Maple Ridge 19 years ago, one thing remained constant: their Christmas display. “This is our 50th year of decorating for Christmas,” Joan Fulton said. “It’s a family tradition for us; both of our parents had light displays.” Fulton explained that they “started small” and have added to their collection ever since. Now, the number of lights on
their display equals about 30,000. The display itself features all aspects of the holiday season. “We have separated our yard into two main themes: The religious story of Christmas and the Santa Claus story,” Fulton said. One side of the yard features a church that comes complete with pews, a pulpit, candles, a bible, and other figurines. The Santa side features the jolly old elf himself, his sleigh and reindeer, Mrs. Claus, snowmen, penguins, hockey players, polar bears, a working train on tracks, and the Grinch. Fulton said they start building their display at the beginning of November and “devote a few hours each day” to it.

’Twas the night before Christmas
…when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, and He whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; “Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes - how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.” – by Clement Clarke Moore, 1823

Join in and have some fun with Who Am I? This Facebook feature is part of a twice-weekly TIMES giveaway, where readers are asked to identify people from this community’s distant and recent past. For instance, who’s the subject of this week’s picture? And a tip, St. Nick or Santa is not the right answer. Picture him without the beard and moustache, and without the red suit. Like us on Facebook and tells us who it is. Readers can “Like Us” on Facebook (at www.facebook.com/MapleRidgePittMeadowsTIMES) and answer correctly before 9 a.m. Friday to be entered. Ken Moxon was among those who correctly identified the last subject as Dr. Kwadwo Asante. He was one of the founding members of the Asante Centre in Maple Ridge in 2000. It is a not-for-profit organization providing a variety of services related to fetal alcohol and autism spectrum disorders and other complex behavioural assessments for children, youth, and adults. Moxon, along with all others who correctly answered, is entered in a grand-prize draw.

KidSport breaks through economic barriers
An organization with a local chapter helps less fortunate kids get off the sidelines and onto the playing field. by Troy Landreville and Howard Tsumura tlandreville@mrtimes.com
From an economic standpoint, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are two very diverse communities, with households on both ends of the fiscal spectrum. That’s why KidSport plays a vital role in getting young local athletes who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to, be part of a team and/or individual sport. In 2012, the charitable foundation, which thrives within the grassroots of some 40 community chapters around this province, issued $1.2 million in grants to help more than 5,700 kids play a season of sport. “In the simplest terms, we give grants to families who can’t pay organized sports registration fees,” said KidSport B.C. director Pete Quevillon. “And here in B.C., our strength is at the community level. It’s volunteers running those community-based chapters, in the big centres like Vancouver and the Tri-Cities, to the Fort Nelsons and the Dawson Creeks.” Locally, KidSport assisted 165 athletes – 107 males and 58 females – in 2012, according to Len Walters, who chairs the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows chapter of KidSport B.C. The total amount awarded through grant applications was $38,114 last year. Walters said 2013 is running similar numbers but a final tally hasn’t been counted as of yet.
He added that there were 78 kids who played soccer and $16,650 given to the local soccer association.
