Free hot chocolate was provided at the Caring Place before Saturday’s second annual Coldest Night of the Year walk through the streets of Maple Ridge. Though the weather was grey, spirits were bright during the walk. More than $12,000 was raised as a result of the event thanks to individual and team efforts. Jason Carlaw was the top fundraiser, collecting more than $1,000 all by himself.

Coldest Night of the Year
Snow makes walk more meaningful
More than a hundred folks braved the elements Saturday, to show support for those who live on the streets in our community. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
It’s called the Coldest Night of the Year, a national walk designed to raise funds for the vulnerable and homeless in communities across Canada. And with the falling snow that accompanied the second annual event in Maple Ridge on Saturday, Feb. 22, the concept behind the walk hit even closer to home. Stephanie Wagner, spokesperson for the Salvation Army’s Caring Place homeless shelter and outreach ministries, said the Coldest Night “signifies that it’s cold out there and when we’re walking, we’re tak-
Darrell Pilgrim, director of Maple Ridge’s Caring Place, addressed the crowd before the walk. ing a stand against homelessness in the community.” Those involved in the walk gathered outside the Caring Place to take a stand for the homeless, and to take a stroll through the streets of downtown Haney. They had the choice of walking five or 10 kilometres.

“This year, we’ve seen a rise in involvement, and it kind of happened last second,” Wagner explained on Saturday. “When I checked the participant list this morning, there were 118 walkers.” She said the increase in involvement happened largely in the final week before the event. “At the start of last week, we had about $2,500 raised and maybe 35 walkers.” She said that on the morning of the event, the total amount of funds raised was more than $12,000, and that many more donations came in prior to the 5 p.m. walk. The top three fundraising teams were: Walk it Like It’s Hot in third place, Maple Ridge Baptist Church in second, while Ministry Mamas & Papas took first. The top overall individual fundraiser, was Jason Carlaw, team captain for Walk It Like It’s Hot, who raised more than $1,000 by himself, Wagner said. Free hot chocolate, music and Sally
Ann, the Salvation Army’s mascot, were all on-hand before the event began, and a warm bowl of chili back at the Caring Place awaited those who completed the trek. Darrell Pilgrim, director of Maple Ridge’s Caring Place, who was also the organizer for the event, credited the combination of community support and the Coldest Night organization for the evening’s success. “The (Coldest Night) organization is a huge help to us,” he said. “But we’re also really happy that the community comes out and just supports us. We put the call out, and people were just like, ‘yeah we want to do this’” He added he was also encouraged to see people “show their support against poverty and homelessness in our community.” Pilgrim said“ everyone deserves a place to live, a place to be comfortable, and a place to eat and have a full belly.”

For a Maple Ridge business like Fuller Watson, that’s been serving local families for coming up on 90 years now, receipt of two more Readers’ Choice Awards this week still means a great deal. One might think a company with that kind of history could rest on its laurels, and having built up a reputation, maybe they could survive primarily on word of mouth. But in an incredibly competitive world, that’s not at all realistic, said Bruce Fuller, one of five family members still working in the family-run business. Dating back to its inception in 1924, Fuller Watson was the general store in this community, providing Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents with pretty much everything for their household needs. Through the years, however, the community has changed, and so too has the company. Now, Fuller and his 14person team specializes in appliances and furniture. Sure, they have a long history of serving local residents, but with so many new home furnishing businesses opening up in the region every year – with shiny new display rooms and large advertising budgets – Fuller said it’s competitive pricing, quality stock, and “over the top” customer services that helps distinguish their business from others. Based on this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, as well as countless other RC awards earned by Fuller Watson throughout the years, TIMES readers agree that this company is doing it right. Most of these winning companies are easily recognizable, like Fuller Watson, because they proudly display the awards in their place of business. • In today’s edition of The TIMES, we recognize Fuller Watson and more than a hundred other local businesses that excel at customer sales and service. Armed bandit sought in weekend heists Mounties need help identifying a man who robbed two restaurants in two days. Clerks at two local restaurants were wise to cooperate with an armed man who robbed two fast food restaurants – one in Maple Ridge, the other in Pitt Meadows – over the weekend. Police believe a robbery of the Dairy Queen in Haney Saturday night and a heist at the Subway restaurant on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows Sunday morning were committed by the same man, said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop.
“Police commend the victims in both of these incidents. They complied with the demands the suspect made, which dramatically enhances their personal safety in these types of cases,” she said, noting that the man indicated he had a weapon, but did not threaten anyone with it. The robbery suspect is described as a Caucasian man, 25 to 30 years old, about 5 ft. 8 in. tall with an average build, dirty blond hair, and a pronounced pointy nose. Anyone with information is asked to call 604-463-6251, or to remain anonymous call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Cops for Cancer
Cyclist expresses gratitude with cheque
A Maple Ridge man gave to a police charity recently, but the donation came with an unexpected unfortunate twist. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
A father’s cancer diagnosis Thursday gave deeper meaning to his son’s charitable donation the next day. Ridge Meadows RCMP recently recovered two stolen, high-end mountain bikes worth more than $13,000. The owner of those bikes made a donation to Ridge Meadows RCMP and the Cops for Cancer charity as a thank you, but the story doesn’t end there. On Friday, Steve Austin presented a cheque for $2,500, to Ridge Meadows RCMP, specifically to Const. Victoria Boechler, who is participating in this year’s Cops for Cancer ride this fall. The donation, which Austin said he had been pre-planning prior to the event, took on an unexpected deeper meaning for the Maple Ridge man. Austin said that on Feb. 20, one day before the presentation, he visited the hospital, where doctors confirmed his father had intestinal cancer. “It’s quite a large tumour,” he explained to The TIMES. “My family is just going through the shock of this news.” Austin added that when he told his dad he planned to make a donation to Cops for Cancer, prior to learning the news about his father diagnosis, “my dad

storage locker a few days before the owner realized they were gone,” she explained. “Using investigative techniques, one of the stolen bikes was recovered at a pawn shop in Surrey.” The lead investigator ensured all Ridge Meadows Mounties officers were alerted to the theft, which included circulating pictures of the stolen bikes. This paid huge dividends, when one of the general duty officers observed the bike in a bike carrier, on the back of a car in Pitt Meadows. The result was the recovery and return of the second bike, all
in less than a week. Dunlop credited the quick exchange and circulation of information with getting the bikes back so fast. “Steve made the call to us on Feb. 11, to report the thefts,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Supt. Dave Fleugel. “And by the 16th, both bikes were recovered,” he elaborated. As an act of gratitude for all their police work, Austin made the donation. “We’re most appreciative of this,” Fleugel said. The fact that Austin actually reported the theft to the police, and kept detailed documentation of his bikes, was key to helping locate them, Dunlop noted. Fleugel added that these days, a lot of people don’t report crimes like this because they “feel like there is such a low likelihood of getting their stuff back, that they don’t feel the need to report it.” However, he said, the message the police want to convey is the exact opposite. “We really need everything reported,” he said. Whether or not the crime is solved, “at least police will be able to use the data, and will be intelligence driven to know where the crime’s occurring, and direct our resources to those various areas,” Fleugel added. For his part, Austin, who works as a submersible engineer, and spends most of his year “stationed in Typhoon Alley off the coast of China,” said the recovery of the bikes and the donation to the charity, gave him a nice sense of closure.

Benefits add to education costs by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The average cost of employing a teacher in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district is $94,530. The average teacher’s salary in the school district is $74,000, which includes a two-per-cent salary indemnity plan, a short-term disability plan. As teaching staff has been reduced in recent years, the average has gone up because teachers have more seniority and therefore higher pay. Benefits cost the school district about $18,000 on average per teacher, includ-
ing items like Canadian Pension Plan and Employment Insurance. Teachers also take an average of seven and a half days off on paid leaves and the average substitute costs $310 a day. It will cost about $5.48 million to bring staffing back 2002 levels if a recent court ruling is followed, according to a report by acting superintendent Laurie Meston. This would comprise of hiring 48 new staff members including 36 classroom teachers, at an estimated cost of $94,530/teacher, totalling $3.4 million; and 22 non-enrolling teachers, totalling $2.08 million.

Students taught to tinker
Maple Ridge teachers are taking part in Maker Day this Friday.
Teachers in Maple Ridge will ask their students to tinker with tools this Friday, in an effort to spark interest in the trades. The Industry Training Authority (ITA), in partnership with UBC, is piloting “Maker Days” as a way of introducing trades and technology and experiential learning opportunities from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Maker Day was pioneered by the Innovative Learning Centre at UBC’s Faculty of Education Okanagan Campus. It has its origins in the Maker Movement which encourages visualizing, learning through doing, tinkering, and collaborating. Participants work in small groups and are given materials and tools, and asked to build solutions that solve design chal-
lenges. This Friday, 80 Maple Ridge teachers will take part in Maker Day. “The idea of tinkering and making things has unfortunately become somewhat of a lost art,” said Dr. Susan Crichton, director of the Innovative Learning Centre at UBC Okanagan. “We believe exposing young people to hands-on activities and problem solving, especially on a regular basis, will instill awareness and potentially awaken interest in careers that involve these skills.” “This is an exciting program, which we hope will awaken children and youth to the possibilities of using both technology and tools to solve problems and create solutions with their hands. Our hope is to eventually inspire more of our youth, and especially young women to pursue careers involving hands-on trades and technology,” said Erin Johnston, director, Training Delivery, ITA.

Five-year-old Brody English, an Eric Langton Elementary student, took great pride in building a few snowmen in front of his Maple Ridge home Sunday morning. Not everyone was disappointed to see the white stuff that fell throughout the weekend. Even police and firefighters reported no significant weather-related calls, although BC Hydro reported that heavy snow caused countless tree branches to break and fall on power lines knocking out power to about 4,100 customers in Maple Ridge for a time.
C y WATER MAIN FLUSHING
The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 3, 2014. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Our View
Middle class sliding down A new internal government report says that the middle class hasn’t been doing that well in Canada over the past few decades. Employment and Social Development Canada, which runs EI, says middleincome families have seen their average earnings rise just 1.7 per cent from 1993 to 2007. The families are increasingly vulnerable to economic shocks and are mortgaging their future to stay afloat. This decline in the economic power of the middle class may come as a shock to some, or be met with outright denial by others, but it’s been painfully obvious to members of the actual middle class over the last few decades. Those under 40, or with adult children trying to enter the workforce, can simply compare the experiences of one generation to another. Those raised in the 1950s and 1960s were lucky enough to experience generally low unemployment, a rising standard of living, and jobs that could be expected to last for decades, with a pension at the end. For those entering the workforce these days, whether straight from college or from a layoff due to the recent recession, those days are long gone. A student graduating from university or a trade school today, contemplating the same career track that his or her parents followed, will almost certainly need more education, and will face more job insecurity in exchange for less money in real terms. There are exceptions to these rules. Those at the absolute pinnacle of the economic pyramid, the CEOs and top executives, particularly bankers, seem to be doing fine in this new economic order. We need to demand of our leaders a meaningful answer to the ever-declining prospects of the middle class, for those working now, and especially for those who are about to enter the work force. M.C.

Horse poop expected on road
Dear Editor, The comparison of dog poop and horse poop is hardly comparing road apples to oranges [Time to tax horse poop, too, Feb. 6 Letters, TIMES]. The primary chemical constituents of horse manure are about the same as harmless household to and agricultural fertilizer. It is predominately chewed grass, hay, the and grain. In fact, horse manure has always been a valuable agricultural amendment and has been used for millennia to help grow our food supplies. Horse poop breaks down very quickly. Dog poop, on the other hand, is loaded with toxic parasites and bacteria (even causing blindness), and may contain some of the following diseases: heartworms, whipworms, hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, parvo, corona, giardiasis, salmonellosis, cryptosporidiosis, and campylobacteriosis. Yes, dogs eat and roll in horse poop, as they do with all sorts of delicious things, such as dead salmon… and boy, do they enjoy it! Cleaning them afterwards is one of the “joys” of dog ownership. If the dog is leashed on the trails, it is not hard to keep them out of the poop and

salmon, if one wants to be spared a smelly dog. The road signs in Maple Ridge say, “Expect horses on our roads,” and that would lead one to also expect some horse poop on the roads. It is a rural area (sadly becoming less so, with more development) and has always had a large horsey community. When one moves to an area like Maple Ridge, I believe people should accept the things that come with living in a rural area, otherwise it is rather like someone who moves next to a farm and then complains about the cows mooing too loudly. Without the hard work and dedication over decades by many of the horse community, a lot of the trails that are now enjoyed by residents, both new and old, would not exist. I fear that Maple Ridge may become just another suburb of Vancouver, and lose the rural charm and heritage that it has had for so many years. I believe that the true bane of the roads and trails is not horse poop, but those bags of doggie poop that some dog owners feel they can leave behind after picking up after their dog! Bridge tolls equal double taxation
Dear Editor, Putting heavy-duty tolls on the bridges is a bit much, especially when one considers that the government collects millions of dollars in taxes on the fuel sales. The fuel taxes were supposed to be used to repair roads and build bridges.
Putting tolls on bridges is double taxation. We are one of the most heavily taxed countries in the world. The expected income from the tolls is not working out very well at all. People are using more fuel to evade the tolls by going to another
Taxation
Businesses earn extra votes
Dear Editor, You reported that business owners are taxed three times more than homeowners in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, do not consume the same services, and do not have a vote [Taxes affect bottom line, Feb. 18, TIMES]. The slogan from the 1700s comes to mind: “No taxation without representation.” That slogan was from the British colonists in the Thirteen Colonies. When it
wasn’t granted, it precipitated the American Revolution. Why should business owners, if they are homeowners and pay property taxes, not have two votes? Fair is fair. Cherryl Katnich, Maple Ridge
travel path. No wonder. Tolls coming and going on the Port Mann are $6 a day. That works out to close to $125 per month. The Golden Ears Bridge has much of the same problem of being under-utilized, evaded for the same reason. There is a growing resistance towards a government that does not seem to listen at all. Now there is talk of tolling some roads. That, too, will be resisted. It’ll go over like a lead balloon. How could it be otherwise? Taxes they collect on fuel sales should be paying for all this. MLA for the North Coast, Jennifer Rice, asked Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton when her government was going to do something concrete to make Highway 16, the “Highway of Tears,” safer for women and girls. During the response, Minister of Environment Terry Lake yelled out: “You need to get elected.” I wondered what he meant by that. Did he mean that it is not important to the BC Liberal government, and that something will be done only after he is gone? That’s certainly what it felt like to me. Wow! Shame on them. What Li’l Dude lacks in size, he makes up for in sound. The chirpy American kestrel was part of a bird photography seminar at Amsterdam Greenhouses and Nursery in Pitt Meadows, a workshop offered by Maple Ridge’s own Raptors Ridge Birds of Prey (RRBP). “The American kestrel is North America’s smallest falcon species,” explained handler Karen Camstra. “And this one’s got a lot to say.” Camstra, her husband Kim, and four different raptors were all the subjects of the Feb. 15 seminar, the first of its kind from RRBP. “I’ve never offered a photographic seminar class until today,” Kim said. The idea for the workshop was to let people practise capturing bird shots with their cameras, but more than that, just to experience “the wonderment of these birds.” Participants paid a $10 fee for the chance to spend about an hour chatting with Kim and Karen, taking photographs, and learning about the different species. About 20 people attended the first
event, and Kim noted he’s planning another similar course on March 1. The local organization has been at its current location in Thornhill for about eight years, and the facility is currently home to 27 different birds. However, Kim said, it goes back much further than that, when Karen started “flying birds about 15 years ago.” The other three birds at the event included Rusty the Red-Tailed Hawk, Stomper the Barn Owl, and Chico the Barred Owl. When it comes to working closely with birds like he does, Kim said the main element is trust. “Let the bird trust you,” he said. “Don’t force it.”

Stand Up to BULLYING
PINK SHIRT DAY February 26th Anti-bully
Empowerment key tool in bullying prevention
Walking away from or ignoring bullies will not solve the problem, according to martial arts instructor Perry Bateson. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
We can’t stop bullying, but we can empower victims. That’s the message Yuen’s Family Martial Arts owner/operator Perry Bateson is sending to parents and the public in general. Although there are “many great steps being taken to stop bullying,” this is not the correct way to solve the problem, Bateson opined. With respect to campaigns, websites, and books that focus on bullying, “the greater per cent of these only highlight the problem, or define what bullying is and stating the obvious that it is not to be tolerated,” he added. “We often hear things like zero tolerance on bullying,” Bateson said. “When we analyze all of these great efforts, we find that it does very little to resolve the problem.” He believes the best tact is to refocus efforts on things we can control and change. “The problem is we are not empowering victims,” Bateson said. “It is the victim we can change and train. By focusing our efforts on what we can do, we effect change.” Bateson said that he has seen numerous bullying situations with children, families, and adults. “In all cases the first question I ask is how many times has this occurred?” he said. “The answer is always the same: lots.” The second question he asks is, “What have you done about it? This simply is not enough.” In every case, Bateson said that he has empowered victims with tools and skills – always verbal – “they have resolved the situation.” “If we begin to learn how to empower children, families, and adults how to resolve conflict, the result is simple,” Bateson said. “Bullying will diminish. Every bully needs a victim. No victim equals no bully.” Bateson said there is no easy answer to bullying, which he describes as a “targeted and repetitive attack on another per-
son, verbally or physically, that can be as an individual or as a group.” He said that in today’s digital age, “cyber-bullying” adds yet another layer to what already is a complex social issue. He said the only thing the bully has ownership on is the imbalance of power. “If you do something about this, I will get you,” he said, of what a bully will threaten his victim with. At his school, Bateson says he teaches lots of strategies to combat bullying, whether it’s verbal or physical in nature.

Glenwood puts a new spin on anti-bullying

One Maple Ridge school has turned anti-bullying and pink shirt day into a week-long conflict management lesson. As the school district focuses on anti-bullying week, Glenwood Elementary is working on teaching kids “proactive strategies to solve conflict,” explained the school’s vice-principal Melanie Roth. Students are taught math and how to tie their shoes, but they also need to be taught social skills, Roth said. “We have to teach kids how to behave,” she said. While they continue to deal with bullying behaviour, the word has become over-used, and many students call someone a bully when they just mean there is some conflict, Roth said. Bullying is a result of a power imbalance, either between younger and older students, or a group
of students against one student; it is also repetitive and intentional, Roth added. The school is calling this week WITS Week, highlighting a program that teaches students how to deal with conflict. The school is using a program called WITS – Walk away, Ignore, Talk to someone, Seek help – to teach them how to deal with conflict. The acronym WITS has been used in the school for several years, but now the goal is to involve parents and support from the
RCMP. The next step has been WITS LEADS, with LEADS standing for Look and Listen, Explore points of view, Act, Decide if it worked, and Seek help. During WITS Week, there will be assemblies, pink day, and teaching of the program within the classrooms, said Jovo Bikic, the principal of Glenwood. “We’re trying to take a positive spin on things,” he said. “Let’s focus on giving kids tools to deal with the problems and conflicts

At this point, their principal will often ask them “did you use your WITS?” Dryden said. But they are also learning to solve conflict or prevent it from happening, Dryden added.

Flames still flickering in PJHL playoffs Ridge Meadows junior Bs are down three games to one to the Abbotsford Pilots in their best-of-seven series. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
The Ridge Meadows Flames still have a pulse in the opening round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. With a 4-3 win Saturday at Planet Ice, the Flames avoided a four-game sweep by the Abbotsford Pilots. Even with the victory, the Flames still trail the Pilots 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. Flames head coach Jamie Fiset is pleased to see his team playing another day. “I was happy that our efforts were rewarded,” Fiset said. “We played a very good game one and came up short with an overtime loss. Games two and three, we all knew that we didn’t put our best foot forward. Finally, in game four, we kept knocking on the door and were able to push through. It was very satisfying.” The Flames will once again face the season-ending axe tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 25) when they visit Abbotsford’s MSA Arena to take on the Pilots in game five. A Ridge Meadows win will send the series back to Planet Ice for a sixth game on Wednesday. If that game is a go, opening puck drop is 8:45 p.m. On the other hand, if the Pilots come away victorious tonight, they’ll advance to the Harold Brittain Conference final against the winner of the Aldergrove Kodiaks/Mission City Outlaws series. At press time Monday, the Kodiaks held a 2-0 lead in that best-of-seven set. The Flames will try to fend off elimination minus one of their top defencemen, as Nicholas Coltura has been suspended after being charged with his third hit to the head penalty this season. Coltura was penalized midway through the opening period of Saturday’s game. Flames 4, Pilots 3 Facing elimination, the Flames

less marker with 4:33 remaining in regulation. On the scoreboard at least, it was all Pilots, who led 2-1 after the first period, scored the only three goals of the middle frame, and tacked on one more goal near the midway mark of the third stanza to win by a four-goal spread. While he was held to one goal, Oddy was the Flames’ best and most dangerous player. He was named third star of the game. “He’s an outstanding individual who works hard and gains the respect of his teammates and the coaching staff,” Fiset said. “He’s been great this year. Travis only has one speed and that’s full blast. He works hard every single shift and his attitude is infectious.” Pilots 4, Flames 3 (OT) Abbotsford’s Kolten Grieve scored 6:47 into the first overtime period to lift the Pilots to victory Feb. 18 at MSA Arena. Ridge Meadows held a pair of leads during the contest, with Wilson opening the scoring just 43 seconds after the opening puck drop, and Oddy tallying an unassisted marker 16:55 into the middle frame to give the Flames a 3-2 advantage. Oddy’s goal was the only marker of the second frame. The score was tied 2-2 after the opening period. Ridge Meadows’ Cameron Alder scored at the 17:45 mark of the first stanza to tie the game at two goals apiece. With 4:01 to go in regulation, Abbotsford’s Austin Edwards scored to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime. ICE CHIPS: After Saturday, the Flames have played six games in eight days. The Pilots finished second in the Harold Brittain with a 27-12-2-3 regular season record. The Flames slotted in third at 1722-2-3.

Business competition
Wave of new winners earns bragging rights
For the 14th consecutive year, TIMES readers have selected local businesses they feel excel at customer sales and service. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com
T
IMES readers know what they like. They know what’s good, and they don’t hesitate to share that information with others. For the 14th consecutive year, The TIMES asked residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to rank this community’s very best businesses. And once again, we’re ready to share those findings with you. The competition was fierce, but we’re proud to unveil the best of the best today with the annual TIMES Readers’ Choice Awards, announced the community newspaper’s publisher Shannon Balla. This year’s winning business owners have a lot to be proud of, she said, unveiling the list of top Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge companies. “These are truly the best as voted by the our readers, and all these members of our community can’t be wrong,” said Balla, a long-time local resident who recently returned to The TIMES team, this time at the helm. This community is made up of outstanding businesses worthy of acknowledgement, and this special section and tonight’s awards ceremonies are just a few ways to honour their work, she said.
Cindy St. Laurent/TIMES
The TIMES team, headed up by recently appointed publisher Shannon Balla, is excited to unveil and recognize the winners of the 14th annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Moreover, each of the winners has been invited to a special reception where they will be lauded by their peers and presented with a distinguished plaque they can hang prominently in their business to alert customers to their high degree of excellence in sales and/or service, Balla said. “The response from our readers has been overwhelming,” she added, noting that a few thousand votes were once
again cast this year. Interestingly, Balla noted, a number of this year’s winners are new. “I guess it’s fair to say there’s no guarantees as to who is going to win… we’ve seen a new wave of winners this time around, along with some who been in the winners’ circle year after year, and even others who have earned the bragging rights intermittently since the inception of
the awards,” she explained. This year’s winners represent a real cross-section of the community, from mom-and-pop shops to larger retailers that are located from one end of the community to the other – from east Maple Ridge through to the westerly borders of Pitt Meadows. The TIMES Readers’ Choice competition has grown in popularity and acceptance, and consequently the awards are now so coveted and so well recognized that businesses and readers alike start calling in early fall wanting to know when the next voting period begins and when the next awards will be presented. “It’s exciting to see that kind of interest and momentum around these awards,” said Balla. “But more important, it’s exciting to see so many incredible local companies excelling at customer sales and service to the point where our readers feel they’re worthy of special recognition. “The Readers’ Choice Awards are a true reflection of what makes this community so special… it’s our people,” Balla said. “Congratulations! To all of the winning businesses, job well done. “To the readers and voters, thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions. “And to our team here at The TIMES, thanks for helping us recognize all these local business owners and operators for being the best of the best.” If you haven’t been part of the voting process in past, don’t dismay, Balla said. Keep your eyes peeled later this year for the 15th annual TIMES Readers’ Choice ballots, and join the tradition of acknowledging the very best of the best businesses in our community.

Haney Home Hardware, at 11768 223rd St. in Maple Ridge, was chosen as the best hardware store in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows by TIMES’ readers in the 14th annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Scott O’Dell (left) is the owner of the store located just south of Lougheed Highway. Here he is joined by salesperson Waisudin Abbas and Dianne Rooke, the store manager. This February, O’Dell is celebrating 20 years of ownership of the hardware store. But outdoing him in years on the floor is Rooke, who has been working at the Haney business for 35 years.

Today, many people prefer a memory foam mattress for its pressure-relieving comfort, ability to conform and adapt to each person’s body, and outstanding motion isolation. Even so, traditional memory foam technology hasn’t changed much since it was invented more than 40 years ago. While it can provide great comfort to many, others find that memory foam mattresses can sleep too hot, sink in too deeply or make it hard to adjust sleep positions in the night. Isn’t it about time that someone reinvented memory foam?

The Triton Two is a remarkable, award winning high performance loudspeaker with a built-in powered subwoofer. It is designed for the superb performance in both high quality two channel stereo systems as well as in multi-channel home theater and music system. Its sleek, elegant curved and tapered design is important from both a styling and a performance perspective. It has a gorgeous piano black finish and its compelling cutting-edge silhouette speaks for itself. Additionally, the narrow front baffle contributes significant to Triton’s exceptional 3D imaging capability which is especially important when used in 3D home theatres.

Encouraging independence
Maple Ridge native Peter Bokstrom has been receiving care from the team at Access Health Services for about four years, which allows the 89-year-old retired dentist to continue living independently in his own apartment. Care aides like Charmaine McMurtry (left) and Leah Stevens visit Bokstrom three to four times a day, 365 days a year, to help him with his personal care and homemaking needs. They also provide him with foot care, companionship, and even transportation to and from doctors’ appointments, as needed. He’s grateful for what he calls their trustworthy and compassionate care. Likewise TIMES’ readers speak highly of Access Health, voting them not only the best health service company in town, but also recognizingd them for offering the best maid service in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

TIMES’ readers have picked Gerri and Ray Murrell and their team at Lougheed Tire as the best tire shop of the year. This company has been serving local drivers since 1977, now changing out tires for many third generation Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows families. Technician Gary Read, here seen mounting a tire on a rim, has been part of the Lougheed Tire team since 1998. He helps between 20 and 30 customers a day, most of whom keep coming back throughout the year for all their tire needs because of the company’s reputation for fast, efficient, and friendly service at competitive prices. After all, the company sign can’t be wrong, Lougheed Tire is the Home of Sudden Service.

Maple Ridge restaurateur George Niavis was over the moon when learning his restaurant, the Bella Vita, took the top prize for fine dining establishments in town in the annual TIMES Readers’ Choice Awards competition. The restaurant features fine dining and continental cuisine, and Niavis invites everyone to visit the restaurant and “taste the good life,” at 22471 Lougheed Hwy. George also posed with his 16year-old son Tom (inset), who helps out in the kitchen.

Yummy!
Looking at their smiles, it’s fair to say that if 11-yearold Charlotte Webb and her six-year-old brother Cameron had a vote, they’d agree that Trevi Gelato & Espresso deserved this year’s Readers’ Choice ranking as the community’s best ice cream store. In the meantime, Claire Atkinson (above), serving up some Mandarinetta gelato, has been working part-time at Trevi for almost a year and was delighted to see the store recognized.

Haney Automotive a dual winner
Eric Zimmer/TIMES
As owner and operator of Haney Automotive, Brandon Zimmerman was pleased to have his business recognized again. The auto shop was a winner in two categories for this year’s TIMES Readers’ Choice Awards. It was picked as best auto service and repair shop, as well as best brake shop. Being the best keeps the boys at Haney Auto busy though. Zimmerman multi-tasked during The TIMES visit, studying the underside of a customer’s leaky car and having his picture taken at the same time.
