Memorial mourns young man

Despite attempts by many to offer medical aid, a pedestrian died after being struck late Wednesday night.

A memorial has been erected along the Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, just west of Harris Road, where a Surrey man was struck late Wednesday night while crossing the road. He later died of his injuries.

by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

Hockey sticks screwed to a power pole form a cross covered and surrounded by letters and black-and-white pictures of Craig Lilly. A few Easter lilies, other flowers, and even a bouquet of white roses – with large raindrops, like tears, on their plastic covering – sit at the foot of the pole. And a strip of police tape flaps in the wind every time a car zooms past the spot where the 23-year-old Surrey man was hit just around midnight Wednesday night. Lilly was critically injured while apparently jaywalking across seven lanes of Lougheed Highway on Wednesday night.

Roxanne Hooper/TIMES

“This is a very tragic event,” said a statement released by Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Mike Moore. Moore said Lilly ran across a dark part of the road. Heavy rain made visibility poor for drivers. He said the driver of the westbound pickup that struck Lilly was not under the influence of alcohol, and that “the driver did stop and has cooperated with the investigation.”

Police said paramedics, as well as Pitt Meadows firefighters and an off-duty nurse, all rendered medical aid at the scene. Lilly was rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital, but died later of his injuries. Now, all that remains at the accident scene is the memorial. Included in the tribute were a few notes.

Fire destroys garage, cars by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

Repairs to a car went sideways this weekned, sparking a blaze that gutted one building and caused damage to another. Sandor Nagy heard screams coming from his backyard Saturday night. It was his son, and he was yelling “FIRE!” In a state of shock, the 250th Street homeowner grabbed the fire extinguisher and bolted out the back door to find flames raging in and around one of the two bays of his detached garage. The accidental fire destroyed his garage and two vehicles inside, plus caused damage to the neighbour’s home, garage, and two other vehicles.

Cyclist recovering

A woman cyclist, who was airlifted to hospital after an accident in north Maple Ridge early Friday morning, is doing better according to Mounties. On Saturday, police had been given an update, reporting her “much improved condition,” said Sgt. Ken Moe. The crash occurred at 130th Avenue and Fern Crescent at about 9 a.m. on April 18, said fire chief Dane Spence. It’s believed the cyclist was westbound on Fern, while a vehicle was believed to be turning onto 130th Avenue when they collided. The cyclist, an adult woman believed to be from Maple Ridge, was taken by ambulance to the nearby Upper Maple Ridge Park then airlifted out. Witnesses on scene indicate sunlight might have been a factor.

Pitt Meadows’ first reeve cut his teeth in Ridge

The City’s early history featured a Scottish-born reeve and councillor. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The first reeve – mayor – of Pitt Meadows already had some experience heading up a municipality when choosen. John Blaney, who has a street and a bog named after him in the City that turns a hundred on Friday, served as the first reeve of Pitt Meadows when it was incorporated in 1914. It has been a hundred years since Blaney served as reeve of the fledgling community, which had broken off from Maple Ridge due to disputes over diking the floodplains. Blaney was born in Lanark, Scotland, and came to Pitt Meadows via Pittsburgh,

Grade 8s at Pitt Meadows Secondary are collecting keepsakes to bury. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

Twenty five years seems like a lifetime away, especially for a team of Grade 8 students from Pitt Meadows Secondary. With that in mind, it might be difficult for these 13 and 14 year olds to wrap their head around the reality that they’re working on a project that won’t be seen again for a quarter century. But whether they’re grasping the lifespan of this project or not, it doesn’t seem to diminish their excitement in creating a time capsule brimming with current-day Pitt Meadows keepsakes that will be sunk into the ground and not looked at again for 25 years. “I think it’s important because you can see the changes in the years,” said Kiran

Pitt Meadows Secondary teacher Lance Kraus and his team of Grade 8 leadership students are putting together a time capsule to help mark the Pitt Meadows centennial. Basra, one of the students leading this volunteer effort. “It will be a great way to remember what life was like 25 years ago,” added Paige Fanning, who hopes to be there when the capsule is buried and again 25 years from now when it’s dug up again. While PMSS teacher Lance Kraus is trying to determine what the capsule will be made out of and where it will be buried, members of his leadership club are in the process of pulling together the content for the times capsule. It will likely include pictures taken around town this year, an audio message from the mayor, a photo album of Pitt Meadows Day, the top songs and movies of the year, documented prices of items such as gas, food, and clothing, grad class pictures, and some kind of Katzie tribute. It will also include today’s special edition of The TIMES, which publisher Shannon Balla said serves as a fitting record of the City’s centennial celebrations.

C y WATER MAIN FLUSHING

The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 3, 2014. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Our View

100 years of community

It’s not every day that a community gets to celebrate a 100th anniversary. And it’s not every community that manages to do it with such great enthusiasm. Pitt Meadows enters its next century on Friday, April 25. And the people here have pulled out all the stops to make it as memorable as such a great community deserves it to be. One of the prime goals of the organizers of the upcoming celebrations was to include the community, with expanded opportunities for involvement, such as the banner design contest which drew 500 online votes and nearly doubled the City’s Facebook following in size and reach. Read (and follow) The TIMES for a full accounting of the great celebrations. The list of organizations and people who have got on board to make the 100th anniversary celebrations as wonderful as the community itself seems to go on forever, from the museum society to City staff, from the fire department to local politicians at all government levels, from the chamber of commerce to local schools, from the Lions to the garden club… all those and more don’t even cover all the people who have come forward to offer support and services to the prime organizers. The list of involvement is a list that is representative of a community chockfull of people who are proud of their Flashback to 1914: The first pound keeper and home, proud of Pitt police constable position Meadows. was created in September And all that pride in purpose and being is certainly what has helped build Pitt Meadows into such an enviable community – a community of accomplishments, a community of successes – over the past 100 years. Happy 100th birthday, Pitt Meadows! Take your bows in these coming months of celebrations. Toot your horn, by all means. You’ve earned the spotlight. You’ve earned the pride of the people who made you what you are. And then… on into the next 100! – B.G.

While I doubt if the first settlers thought in terms of “sustainability” or “livability,” one hundred years later, Pitt Meadows has become one of Canada’s most liveable communities. A picturesque setting, respect for family values, and strong, effective leadership have made the City a great place to call home. Happy one hundredth birthday, Pitt Meadows! Randy Kamp

Congratulations to the citizens of the City of Pitt Meadows on the 100th anniversary of its incorporation. Like those early settlers who discovered the diverse and beautiful low-lying lands of Pitt Meadows, 18,000 residents today continue to enjoy living in a mild climate in a beautiful, natural environment. Pitt Meadows has managed to create a vibrant urban area while still maintaining an appealing small-town feeling. On behalf of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, I wish Pitt Meadows a year of celebration.

From School District No. 42

To the Citizens of the City of Pitt Meadows,

It is my very great pleasure on behalf of the Board of Education for School District 42 to offer congratulations to all of the citizens of Pitt Meadows on the occasion of the community’s 100th anniversary. The world is so complex today, we often look back with fondness on the simpler times of days gone by. How many times have you heard your elders talk about how clear the rules were and how tough school was when they were students (walking to and from school for miles through deep snowdrifts uphill both ways)? Notwithstanding that nostalgic thought, the School District and City have evolved together during the past century, and Mike Murray have achieved a great deal. Pitt Meadows citizens now enjoy outstanding community amenities and services, and an education system which continues to help students achieve exceptional levels of success. We have a great deal to be proud of and thankful for. Thank you, and congratulations to all those who have made Pitt Meadows such a great community for our current and future families. May their effort and success inspire us all to continue their work for an even brighter future. Mike Murray, Chair Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows Board of Education

hey might just be the most unique duo in Pitt Meadows. Hazel, named after Hazel Anderson (part of the founding Park family) and Harris, named after Wellington J. Harris who settled in Pitt Meadows and was the first mayor of Maple Ridge (when the two communities were one and the same), are cartoon herons and the City’s centennial mascots. Lately, they have been making the rounds in the community, posing for photos and hanging out at various events. The idea for the mascots was conceived “sometime last year” as a way to “make the centennial more interesting to the kids in the community,” said Rebecca Vaughan, the City’s communications assistant and digital media coordinator. The characters, designed by local artist Brad Dinwoodie, are included in much of the City’s centennial promotion. In addition, the birds have a blog, which Vaughan said “just kind of came up” as another way to interact with the community throughout the year and keep people informed in a different way. Though meant to appeal primarily to kindergarten and primaryaged kids, the pair can be enjoyed by anyone, Vaughan said. They’ll also be in action this Friday, and ready for photos with people during Pitt’s birthday bash.

But Little doesn’t simply rely on a school program to get him out and involved. Little explained he also volunteers at The Caring Place

outside of regular school hours. He spends his time there getting to know people, and helping out in the kitchen. “I like seeing the smiles on people’s faces,” he said.

In Grade 2, Little said, he also joined his parents on a trip to Africa, and helped dig a trench that would be used for wiring that would supply a hospital with electricity. His helpful nature doesn’t end with humans though. Little also volunteers in Mission at the Senior Animals In Need Today Society (SAINTS) animal shelter. His title? Official pooper scooper. However, Little said that he also helps out with tours that the shelter puts on, and he enjoys talking to people and showing them around. He said his favourite part of being at the shelter is “going and seeing the animals, and getting to know them.” Though the Junior Leadership Program is part of Pitt Meadows Elementary, Little said he isn’t going to stop volunteering just because his time at the school is coming to an end. Planning to attend Maple Ridge Secondary next year, with thoughts of possibly “doing something with mechanics” in his future, Little said he will carry on doing as much volunteer work as he can. In the meantime, he has taekwondo classes and a Nerf gun hobby to keep him busy when he’s not volunteering. “I love helping,” he said.

Congrats to the Citizens of the Century! Pitt Meadows is what is it today based on the dedication and spirit of our residents. Thank you to everyone who nominated someone for the Citizens of the Century and congratulations to those who appear on the list. If you know of a community member who is making Pitt Meadows a better place to live, work or play, please let the City know so we can recognize them, contact info@pittmeadows.bc.ca or call the Mayor’s office at 604-465-2410. All Citizens of the Century will be recognized with a certificate and medallion at a special reception in June. Blueberry Co-op for 27 years, and a founding member of the North American Blueberry Council.” He also developed a small cranberry field. Not content to simply take care of his farm, Oscar also wanted to grow and nurture the community in which he lived. Oscar became heavily involved in much of the early development in Pitt Meadows, both commercial and residential, as well as in promoting the City,

eventually becoming the mayor. He served the community as a City councillor from 1950 to 1965, and was mayor from 1966 to 1975. “He loved Pitt Meadows,” said Arlene. “He was so proud to live in Pitt Meadows, and extolled its virtues on anyone who would listen.” Arlene said her dad was always trying to grow the City and “make it sustainable so that people could live and work here.” She added her dad would “have been so proud to be honoured by the community he loved.”

Lorilee McMyn, who is also related to the Sharpes and the Parks, remembers her grandparents’ generation, the early settlers to Pitt Meadows, as being hard-working, community-minded people who were generous to their neighbours. “They were made up of the type of people who gave away land for a park and a cow to a woman who just lost a husband,” was her description of the early settlers of Pitt Meadows.

Pitt folks always active

Flashback: Pitt Meadows Athletic Association was formed in January

Long before team sports were common place in Pitt Meadows, area residents came together to enjoy a number of recreational opportunities. From swimming in local waterways during the summer, to strapping on skate blades and playing hockey on those same waterways when they froze, residents of Pitt Meadows have a rich history of coming together to be active and have fun. But as the community grew up, and more residents moved to the area, creation of official sports teams was to be expected.

And according to the limited documentation, Pitt Meadows saw significant inroads in the area of formalized sports in during the late 1930s and early 1940s. In fact, in a book called Pitt Meadows: Celebrating the history of Our Great City - under the section entitled Edith McDermott’s 1967 book, Pitt Meadows: Through a Century of Progress, the author delved into the creation of the Pitt Meadows Athletic Association for the purpose of building a park and playground.

Ken Ramsden is a relative newbie to Pitt Meadows, but over a period of a few months, he received a crash course on the community’s history. The 70-year-old retiree, who moved to the community roughly two years ago, volunteered his woodworking skills to rout (cut a groove) words and phrases into a memory band attached to the white picket fence that surrounds Pitt Meadows Museum. The signs that make up the memory band started out as pieces of cedar that were cut to size. “Basically it’s just a means of using a machine Troy Landreville/TIMES and moving it around, Ken Ramsden created the words and phrases that make up a memory band and a cutter that cuts a in Pitt Meadows.
