Debbie Dyer received “the best Christmas gift ever” on Friday when the B.C. Court of Appeal ordered a new trial for the woman found not guilty of dangerous driving causing the deaths of Dyer’s daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend. “This is a good outcome, not just for me but for everybody in the province, just to know that they’re actually going to do something about it,” Dyer said. “May justice prevail.” On Oct. 19, 2010, Johnny De Oliveira, 21, picked up 19-year-old Beckie Dyer and her friend in Vancouver after a Justin Bieber concert, and dropped the friend off in Maple Ridge before heading home to Pitt Meadows. As De Oliveira and Dyer drove down Lougheed Highway shortly before midnight, a Toyota Paseo driven by Andelina Kristina Hecimovic skidded sideways over the top of the concrete median into the westbound lanes, flipped, and smashed into the roof of the Suzuki De Oliveira was driving.
More than 300 children attended the Kids Only Shoppe at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society on Sunday, to pick out gifts for their parents. Each of the participating kids comes from a financially disadvantaged family that is registered to receive a hamper. The event Layar or online was made possible in large part thanks to donations received from TIMES readers after they heard there was a shortage of parent gifts.

Economic development board dissolved
One of the first moves of the new City council involved disbanding a business-driven board of directors. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
The City of Pitt Meadows has taken over the reigns of its future economic development, following a decision to “dissolve” the Pitt Meadows Economic Development Corporation’s (PMEDC) board of directors. The decision came because “council needed to bring strategic planning process back under its own control to review
and restructure the form and substance of economic development function, in a 2015 context for Pitt Meadows,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker. This means the planning process will now be under the control of the entire council, and Becker said he does not want to guess about any future decisions. “We will be setting a strategic planning process in place as quickly as possible so that we can address any changes during the budget process in January,” Becker said. The perceived “quickness” of the decision surprised PMEDC board member and Pitt Meadows businessman Dan Kosicki. “I expected that changes would be made in the first quarter,” after the new

council was sworn in, he said. “This was a little more sudden.” But Becker disagreed. “There was nothing sudden or quick about my concerns,” he said, adding the “strategic drift was becoming apparent shortly before the election in 2011,” and had “accelerated” in the past term. “The discussions at business planning confirmed my perceptions for the need for action before business planning and budgeting had completed,” Becker said. During the business planning presentations “it became clear that council had failed to provide the arm’s length board with proper strategic direction,” he elaborated. “The lack of direction extended some

years back to even the time I was on council,” Becker noted. “So I acknowledge my part in the historical leadership deficit.” The economic development corporation has provided many benefits to Pitt Meadows, in terms of existing businesses and investors and many initiatives like Invest North Fraser, argued Pitt Meadows City Councillor Tracy Miyashita. She and council newcomer Bill Dingwall were the only two councillors who did not support the motion. “Many good people have put in a huge amount of time,” added Kosicki. “I’m hoping council can utilize them with however they decide to reconfigure things.”

Referendum offers ‘no certainties’: Read
Maple Ridge’s mayor votes ‘no,’ while the Pitt Meadows mayor asked for more information from TransLink about a mail-in funding vote. by Christopher Sun and Eric Zimmer editorial@mrtimes.com
Raising the provincial sales tax by 0.5 per cent to fund transit expansion will not guarantee improved transit in Maple Ridge says Mayor Nicole Read. That’s
one reason why she voted against it last week. On Thursday, Metro Vancouver mayors voted 18-3 in favour of increasing the sales tax in the region from a provincewide seven per cent to 7.5 per cent, which would make it the first of its kind in Canada. The question will now be posed to the public in March, through a mail-in referendum. If passed, an expected $250 million a year will be raised to fund a $7.5 billion expansion of the region’s transportation infrastructure, including a new Pattullo Bridge, light rail in Surrey, and a subway in

Firefighters bag donations
Annual charity drive at Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows grocery stores benefit Christmas hamper and food bank. by Christopher Sun
csun@mrtimes.com
Pitt Meadows firefighters were at two shopping malls on Saturday, for the annual Firefighters for Families charity drive, bagging almost $6,000 cash and 485 lbs of food. In Pitt Meadows, $5,926 was collected, up from $5,400 last year, said assistant fire chief Brad Perrie. About 17 Pitt Meadows firefighters, along with the youth academy and a handful of retired, honorary firefighters were at Superstore, IGA, Hollywood 3 and a liquor store collecting donations – to be split 50/50 – for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society and Friends in Need Food Bank. “It was a nice day, people were in good spirits and the community was very generous,” Perrie said. “We received a good amount of Brad Perrie food and toys.” Pitt Meadows assistant Maple Ridge firefighters were also fire chief out in force, collecting donations at six grocery stores. Assistant fire chief Timo Juurakko called this year’s event a success. “Our goal was to beat last year’s total and we did,” Jurrakko said. “It was a good turnout. This event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for us.” Final numbers from Maple Ridge firefighters will not be released until Wednesday night. They will present a cheque to the food bank when the Canadian Pacific holiday train visits town. Last year, Maple Ridge firefighters raised $12,382.

Report ‘pretty much what we expected’: director After reviewing the 2014 budget, discussions begin again in January. by Eric Zimmer
d
ezimmer@mrtimes.com
There were no big surprises when the October 2014 Budget Variance Review was presented to the City of Pitt
Meadows last week. “For the purposes of 2014, I’m comfortable we’ve met the approved budget,” said Mark Roberts, the City’s director of finance and facilities. “I don’t have any concerns.” A vacant director position creating a one-time surplus of $75,000 was a notable item on the report. “We had a director of development
services and operations, and that position became vacant,” Roberts explained. “That wasn’t anticipated, so it’s now filled in an acting capacity.” However, that director left another position vacant. “Essentially we’re down to one director position for the time being and the plan is to fill it in some capacity,” he said. “This is a one-time savings in nature

and is not ongoing.” Now that council has received the information from staff, the next step will be to begin deliberations for the budget for 2015. Those discussions are expected to start in earnest early in the new year. Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker echoed Roberts’ sentiments. “No big surprises for me. I found the explanations generally reasonable.”

Even though Read voted no, she has mixed feelings about the regional sales tax. She said the mayors were put in a “very difficult position” by the province, in forcing this referendum and with that in mind, she thinks the 0.5-per-cent increase is the fairest solution, as there is no public appetite for a gasoline tax increase or vehicle tax levy. While he does share Read’s concerns in part, Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker said he also recognizes the “need for a new plan for regional transit.” Becker did not take part in the referJohn Becker endum vote Pitt Meadows mayor Thursday, as he was attending business planning at City hall. But in his desire to make sure Pitt Meadows residents have as much information as possible to make up their own minds, Becker said there is a TransLink presentation scheduled for the televised Dec. 16 council meeting, to “identify the benefits for Pitt Meadows in the 10-year-plan,” as well as some cost estimates of the new tax. The presentation will be recorded so residents will be able to refer back to it, the mayor added. Read said it’s now up to the taxpayers to voice their opinion, through the referendum. “I’ve taken a stand on it and I think my decision is most in line with a lot of Maple Ridge residents,” she concluded.

Catherine O’Brien wrote, “I don’t attend but I applaud their efforts.” Added Janessa Munz, “Honestly, I think it’s a marvellous idea. Charette said that, from noon to six, roughly 200 patrons showed up to the strip-a-thon and contributed to the event.
The always-popular bra auction netted $4,000 for the cause, with head server Romana Van Lissum getting $1,500 for her undergarment. “People do that for a tax receipt and to give back to the community, more than anything,” Charette said. hat was missing last year, Charette said, was public feedback, one way or another. “Everybody is allowed to have an opinion, whether it be for it or against it, but what I think what happens, when there is that dialogue in the public, it also helps get the word out about the charity.”

In the spirit of giving Clare Gullmes received a warm hug from Santa (a.k.a. Ernie Daykin) at the chamber of commerce during its Christmas luncheon last week. Gullmes was asking for support for a Maple Ridge family that has a child named Nicolas. This young boy lives with spinal muscular atrophy. And while Gullmes said he is getting better every day, there is an urgent need to raise about $100,000 to renovate his family’s home to accommodate his disabilities, as well as to buy a specialized van. Maple Ridge Liquor Store has already committed to helping the family, as have the realtors at Re/Max, and a number of other local businesses. Stay tuned to the TIMES for more about Nicolas and this communitybased fundraising drive. Brian McCristall/TIMES

Our View
Freedom for everybody
“And still they gazed and still the wonder grew, that one small head could carry all he knew.” That line of wisdom, courtesy of Oliver Goldsmith, came to mind when we learned that Randy Kamp’s office cancelled two previously booked advertisements for The TIMES. Mr. Kamp, of course, is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission. Was the cancellation of the ads a surprise? Not really. It is consistent with politicians who have thin skins and believe they are always entitled to the final word because they know more than others, and if they are criticized, they believe that striking back is the right thing to do. But that reflex action isn’t right or even fair, if you believe that others are entitled to opinions as well. Last Thursday, TIMES publisher Brian McCristall wrote a column [MP aids PM instead of teens] questioning Mr. Kamp’s letter to the editor [Hope for disappointed homeless, Dec. 9] praising the accomplishments of the Harper government’s new policies that have effectively resulted in the planned elimination of government funding for the lron Horse Youth Safe House, a facility that has for 10 years provided emergency shelter for youths in our community. The hope expressed in Mr. Kamp’s letter was: “I remain hopeful that another funding source can be still found – perhaps the provincial government.” In publishing his letter, The TIMES gave Mr. Kamp voice to his opinion, in the tradition of freedom of the press. And we responded in the next edition, suggesting that Mr. Kamp use his influence to help people in his own constituency, rather than touting why it makes more sense to pass the buck off to other governments or agencies. Later the same morning that the column was published, the Kamp camp cancelled two ads on his behalf. Certainly, Mr. Kamp has the right to spend his advertising dollars as he wishes. However, when an elected MP is given the opportunity to use the freedom of the press to his advantage, it should be evident that people (including publishers) have a similar right to express their views, whether they agree or disagree with his ideas and the policies of the government to which he is aligned. He has the right to his own opinion – and so do others. That said, we do expect politicians to pay attention to the best interests of their constituents, and not just the best interests of their political party. In the 1950s, Father Knows Best was one of the most popular television series, not only because it was well done, but because society, in the main, tended to accept the validity of that statement. But times have changed, and perhaps Mr. Kamp doesn’t realize that, although he believes the Harper government can do no wrong, others aren’t necessarily convinced. – B.M.

The $7.5 billion transit plan for Metro Vancouver is discriminatory. The plan includes light rail for Surrey, a new fourlane Pattullo Bridge, a subway in the Broadway Corridor of Vancouver, and hundreds of new buses. What is missing is HandyDART. When the $7.5-billion transit construction projects are complete, ablebodied people will be able to use all of it. The majority of able-bodied people also have the option of driving. If we don’t build Site C and we don’t build run of river or wind projects, where do these naysayers propose we get our power from? Are we going to start rationing power the way we ration lawn-watering in the summer? Will even-numbered houses get to turn on their lights and appliances Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays? I am not going to give in to the naysayers. I say yes: yes to run of river, yes to wind, yes to Site C, and yes to anything else that will make this province great and give us the competitive advantages we need to succeed and prosper.

Arcade fun made by kids
Albion students build games out of cardboard. by Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com
It took a few days for A.J. Pain to make a cardboard version of his favourite arcade game, “Splatalot skee ball.” The game requires the player to roll a tin foil ball, up an incline and get it through one of four holes, that he cut out of a box. “It was difficult cutting the holes out,” said A.J. a Grade 4 student at Albion Elementary. “I play these at arcades,” he said. “I love it.” Last week, A.J. and his fellow classmates turned their classroom into an arcade. Students from other classes came to play the different cardboard games, paying $1 for 50 turns, and the proceeds, $137, went to the Friends in Need Food Bank. Grade 4 teacher Andrea MacInnes was inspired to get her students to participate in this creative and fun project after seeing an online, short film called

Caine’s Arcade. In 2011, Caine Monroy, 9, spent his summer vacation building a cardboard arcade in his dad’s used auto parts store in East Los Angeles. It caught the attention of a filmmaker, who then made a short film about it and after posting it online in April 2012, it got more than one million views in 24 hours.
“When I showed the kids the video, they were electrified,” MacInnes said. “They were excited about making their own arcade game.” A second film was created and now there is an annual Global Cardboard Challenge, which has engaged 225,000 kids in 60 countries. More information about the challenge is available at www.cainesarcade.com.
I started smoking pot at the age of 13. I thought life was one big party. I was what people called a “functioning” drug addict. I had a son at the age of 28, and that’s when I fully understood the meaning of the word “love”. Through the years, I still partied – HARD – every time my son left with his father for the weekend. When my son was almost 10, his father and I agreed that he would go and live with him. This was the hardest decision of my life. Little did I know, the pain of this decision would soon be too much to handle. I became very sick from the pain of my addiction and heartache, and was told that heroin would take that away. Within 6 months I lost my job, my car and my house. I was constantly in trouble, on the run and in hiding from the police and I ALWAYS wound up getting caught. I was so sick and angry; I fell to my knees and I said out loud, “God, if you’re real, please give me a sign. I can’t do this anymore”. The next day, God sent me a sign. I dropped on my knees and started crying – shocked that God first of all existed and that He gave me – a nobody – a sign. It was then and there that I started trying – trying to do my chores, trying to do everything I was supposed to. When I finished treatment, there was a spot for me in the Genesis program at The Salvation Army Caring Place. That was almost 2 years ago. Being in this program, I now have a relationship with God, I have REAL friendships, and I’m surrounded by people who sincerely want the best for me. My son is allowed to come and visit and stay on weekends and we have a real relationship. I know who I am now in Christ.

Christmas help still needed Salvation Army is experiencing a shortage in kettle drive volunteers, cash donations, and turkeys for its annual Christmas dinner. by Christopher Sun
csun@mrtimes.com
It may be donor fatigue, the bad weather, or procrastination, but donations to the local Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle drive are down, and the community is being asked for help. With little time left, the Salvation Army Caring Place is only at 40 per cent of its fundraising target of $92,000 this year. The kettle campaign funds its community meal program, which serves 10,000 meals per month. “We’re at about $10,000 in our kettle drive and $15,000 in our mail out campaign,” said spokesperson Amelia Norrie, adding there is also a shortage of volunteers to man the kettles. “We have 700 volunteer hours to fill.” Volunteers can opt to man a kettle for as little as one shift of two hours, or commit to more. “We have a very good volunteer base, but we need more,” Norrie said. “Every kettle that isn’t out, that’s money that doesn’t get collected.” Norrie has also put a call out for turkey donations or gift cards to purchase turkeys for its annual Christmas dinner, scheduled for Friday, Dec. 19. “We need to get about 25 turkeys to serve 300 people,” Norrie said. “We are prepared to buy them if we have to, but

Really, Mom, I’m not a reindeer. I like chasing deer, maybe that’s where the confusion came from. But I’m not about to fly around with a jolly ol’ elf and his sleigh, delivering toys – not unless there’s some great treats in mix or me, said Annie, a Jack Russell terrier-cross adopted in Maple Ridge more than a dozen years ago.

KATIE’S PLACE MARY POPPINS was returned to our shelter due to no fault of her own. She is a very sweet girl but a bit on the shy side. Once you get to her and start petting her she melts into your hand. Mary Poppins is super dainty. She has little dainty toes, a small dainty nose, and beautiful green eyes that are always watching you, waiting for attention. Mary Poppins is quite nervous of the other cats at the shelter, and will do best as an only feline companion. She will need a quiet, calm home where she can relax and shower you with love. She is hyperthyroid and requires daily medication, but she is so good about taking her pills, it’s really no hassle at all. Because of her condition we would be more than happy to send her out as a permanent foster.

SUUKKO has been with us for a very long time, and has been featured here on a few occasions. When she first came in she was a bit of a grump. This girl was found as a stray and we don’t know what may have happened to her on the streets that made her so unsure of people. We are happy to report Suukko has totally come around. She likes pets and no longer shies away from human touch. Suukko is probably one of the most photogenic cats we have ever met, and we rarely have a bad picture of her. She is beautiful inside and out. Suukko is very undemanding and therefore easily overlooked. She has her x hang out and she will spend her days relaxing there. Those of us who know and love her can’t understand how this stunning little girl has not yet found a home.
AZALEA is an affectionate cat, who is totally easy going and adores humans. She’s a round butterball who could stand to lose a pound or two, but she’s so beautiful just the way she is we can’t imagine her being any other way. She lost her home because her human entered into a relationship with someone who didn’t like cats. So poor Azalea, like so many others, lost her home and her human. There is nothing negative that we can say about this sweet natured cat. She’s cute, and funny, and playful, and wold make a great addition to any loving family that would give her a forever home.

MYRNA is another friendly girl. She likes to be picked up and cuddled. When you pick her up she will wrap her paws around your neck to give you a hug, or she’s simply just trying to get closer. Myrna is a chatty girl who’s always up for a meaningful conversation. Myrna was abandoned at a bus stop but seems to hold no grudges. She was adopted from us but, like Mary Poppins, was returned due to no fault of her own. Like the first time she came to us, Myrna simply settles into the shelter life without any complaints. She has her favourite spot to hang out on and she loves cat nip. Myrna deserves a loving forever home. She will love you back, will warm your lap, will keep you company, and may even help you solve some problems. She’s sweet, smart, and very pretty.

Topsy-turvy Flames struggling to ignite Maple Ridge’s juniors are struggling to string together any kind of success. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
For the Ridge Meadows Flames, consistency has been as elusive as a garter snake. Just when they think they’ve got it in their hands, it slips through their fingers. “That’s totally it: [lack of] consistency,” Flames head coach Jamie Fiset said, about what’s been the Achilles heel for his team, which sits at the bottom of the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Harold Brittain Conference with a 10-18 record. “We’ve been in our games, we’re not getting blown out and we show up to play. But when we have two or three lines going and one or two lines that
are not doing a whole lot, it’s tough to string to string together consecutive wins.” Playing three games in four days, the Flames followed a potential momentum-building, 5-3 road win over the Langley Knights at the George Preston Recreation Centre in Brookswood on Thursday with a 4-2 loss to the Richmond Sockeyes Friday at Planet Ice, and a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the host Grandview Steelers late Sunday afternoon at the Burnaby Winter Club. Flames 5, Knights 3 Down 3-1 after the first period, the Flames rallied by scoring two goals in the second period and adding two more in the final frame to defeat the Harold Brittain Conference-leading Knights.
