RCMP are hunting for two armed bandits and a hit-and-run driver after two potentially violent crimes in town this weekend. The first was an armed robbery in Pitt Meadows Saturday morning, at about 7:45 at the Chevron Town Pump at 122nd Avenue and Harris Road. Two men, both described as in their 20s with heavy builds (one standing about 5 ft. 11 in., the other 5 ft. 6 in.) entered the gas station, produced a weapon, and made off with a small, undisclosed amount of cash, lottery tickets, and cigarettes. Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the bandits, who were spotted driving away (northbound towards Lougheed Highway) in a four-door silver car. In the meantime, Mounties are also asking for the public’s help to solve a hit-and-run accident about 12 hours later in Maple Ridge. The accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night, just east of 216th Street, on Lougheed Highway. A Maple Ridge man, in his mid50s, was crossing the street when he was struck in the eastbound lane, said RCMP Sgt. Casey Baker. While the driver of the van did not stick around, there were witnesses to the accident who were able to give a description of the suspect vehicle and who came to the pedestrian’s aid, Baker said. Mounties are now hunting for a white Mercedes Sprinter utility van involved with apparent damage to the passenger side of the vehicle. In the meantime, the local man was transported to Royal Columbian Hospital. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, said the RCMP watch commander. But as of Monday, he was still reportedly in hospital. The hit-and-run is still under investigation by the Ridge Meadows RCMP traffic division, and anyone with information is asked to call 604-463-6251.

Nice weather translated to low turnout

School board chair Mike Murray danced with “Sally” at the third annual Coldest Night of the Year event, hosted by the Salvation Army’s Caring Place in Maple Ridge. Participation in the fundraising walk was down “significantly“ this year, which translated to only $4,000 raised from the event, said event organizer Amelia Norrie. That’s down, compared to $12,000 last year. Money raised from the walk goes towards programs such as bagged lunches for kids.

Campaign financing numbers from last fall’s municipal election suggest that in order to win a mayor’s seat, one must be willing to pay. Both successful local candidates, Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read and Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker, spent more than their fellow candidates on their respective campaigns – and most of that money came

Queens converge on Hammond

A show with a message that people can be themselves – without question – will feature men in drag to support Alouette Addictions. by Ronda Payne

editorial@mrtimes.com

Who would have believed a drag show could be so popular in Maple Ridge? Selling out early is a good problem for Alouette Addictions Services. Tickets for The Drag Show Fundraiser were gone in just two weeks, said Annika Polegato, executive director of the Maple Ridge organization. The idea to host such a show initially came from the need to raise funds. “We’re fairly new to fundraising in the community,” Polegato said. “We wanted to do an event that would raise awareness of the organization and raise funds… We’ve had an amazing response.” One staff member suggested doing a drag show, and before Polegato knew it, everyone got on board with the idea – which she described as a natural fit for the work of Alouette Addictions. People who are gay, bi-sexual, trans-gender, or in other lessdefined categories, “often turn to drugs or alcohol” as a way to cope with the uncertainty and emotions, Polegato explained. “We just thought that this was such a great opportunity to have an event where there’s no questions asked,” she added. Polegato isn’t “in” on exactly what the show featuring three drag queens will entail, but performer Jason Lomax – who goes by the stage name of Della – is the ideal fit for it. He, too, once struggled with addictions. “I saw Tootsie when I was about five or six years old,” Lomax said. “I saw that, and I thought, ‘you know, he wasn’t pretty, but damn he fooled everybody’.” RuPaul was another early inspiration for Lomax. “I came out of the closet in 1996 and started... drag in ’97,” noted Lomax, who identifies himself as pansexual. He performed in his first drag

Drag queen Jason Lomax will be one of three “queens” on stage at the Hammond Community Centre Saturday to raise funds and awareness for Alouette Addictions Services.

Enhanced profile lauded A not-for-profit organization was among several entities and individuals given accolades at Saturday’s chamber awards night. Alouette Addictions Services was crowned non-profit organization of the year for its outstanding contribution to the community. “With a reputation for excellence, integrity, honesty, and generosity, this organization has made a significant positive impact on the community by delivering exceptional programs and services,” said award sponsor and presenter Brian McCristall, publisher of The TIMES. Receiving the award was “incredibly meaningful” for all those involved in the organization and in saving lives in this community during the past 20 year, said executive director Annika Polegato. But it is especially rewarding to those who have been working tirelessly in the past year to increase awareness and funds for the organization and the important work being done.

show at the Mars nightclub, and in the subsequent 18 years has loved becoming involved in the

drag queen community. Unfortunately, the journey hasn’t all been the fun of hair,

makeup, and accessorizing for Lomax. His addictions threatened to take his life. He overdosed three times. “I just hated myself,” he said. “I was too obsessed with using. There’s not a lot of people in the situation of being young and gay, and possibly a drag queen, who know it’s possible to stay sober and have fun.” The six-foot-one, 185-pound actor and singer is having fun now, despite the somewhat rocky start. “I’ve been clean and sober for over 13 years,” he noted. Lomax was asked by the show’s organizers if he’d be interested in participating in the Alouette Addictions event and sharing his story. He immediately recognized the natural fit as a way to help others. In the past, drag served as a mask not only of his appearance, but also of Lomax’s loneliness and addiction. “It was a way to hide and mask what was going on,” he said. “Getting sober at the age of 24 was a rebirth.” That rebirth of sorts allowed Lomax to be Della for the right reasons. He could focus on why he loved being a drag queen – instead of his addiction. For the past 13 years, Lomax has stayed focused on his craft – working on his makeup skills and hair styling techniques in an effort to create the ideal image. “It’s an evolving thing, I think that’s what drag is,” he said. “You can be whoever you want to be and still be clean and sober.” As for his participation in this weekend’s show, Lomax hopes to get that message across, as well as possibly bring some comfort and understanding to others facing personal challenges. “The humility and desperation [of recovering from addiction] paid off because I’m relieved of my obsession,” he said. With this weekend’s show selling out quickly, organizers may consider a larger venue for future events, Polegato said. “It’s really about creating awareness of the organization in the community, raising funds, having some fun, and just being able to be yourself and enjoying whoever is next to you,” she said. “We’re going to have lots of laughs and fabulous entertainment.”

Our View

Pink armour beats bullies You don’t have to wear pink tomorrow. But it would be nice – not because pink is a pretty colour, but because tomorrow, pink has a special meaning. Tomorrow, Feb. 25, 2015, is Pink Shirt Day. It’s a day officially earmarked for people to sit back a moment and think about bullying. It’s a day to remind us all of the damage that bullying does. It’s a day for us all to make ourselves and each other aware of the loneliness, the depression, the desperation, and yes, the suicides directly attributable to bullying. But it’s also more than just a day of awareness, it’s a day of action. Pink Shirt Day is a day that says we care. It’s a day that acknowledges the heartaches of the bullied, and a day to stand up and let the victims know that they are not alone, that they do not have to remain alone. And it’s a day to announce a firm resolve that bullying will no longer be tolerated. When we think of bullies, our first thoughts go automatically to the school yard and the beefy kid who picks on the class “weakling.” For most, the face of bullying is the “big kid” with the pouty grimace and a domineering attitude. That’s probably because it’s a face dredged from our own memories, from personal experiences that we survived as victims of bullying many years ago. But some don’t survive. Some don’t get past the bullying. The scars of bullying are barely visible for some, but they remain deep and debilitating for others. That applies to both the bullied and the bullies – and the experience shapes much of their lives, shifting from school to workplace to casual encounters that may occur anywhere at any time of day. Bullying robs confidence, it steals self-esteem, and it plunders lives. Think of pink as the colour of armour tomorrow – not just for yourself, but for those who recognize that you are willing to stand up for them. – B.G.

Marc Dalton

Dear Editor, As a constituent in Maple Ridge, I was stunned that Marc Dalton would consider abandoning his position as MLA to fulfill a selfish desire to run for MP for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. He was elected to do a job, and now he thinks he can just leave partway through, without any consequences. It is clear Mr. Dalton is not motivated by what is best for the people of Maple Ridge. Why else would he be willing to trigger a $500,000 taxpayer-funded by-election to fill his vacant MLA seat? It doesn’t seem very conservative to me.

Response

No agreement

Dear Editor, Surprise, surprise! We have it yet another response letter from Cherryl Katnich [Oil products useful, Feb. 179 Letters, TIMES]. I cannot ever recall having read an original letter to the editor written by her. However, she is constantly in print with her negative perspective on other individuals’ letters, including one of mine from the past. Does she ever agree with anyone’s opinions? Can she come up with her own idea for a change and write about it? Maybe a backlash or two will allow her to become more open-minded. Patricia Tochkin, Pitt Meadows

Odd Thoughts

Seals okay

Dear Editor, Bob Groeneveld cites “…those baby seals about to be clubbed between their sparkling sweet eyes and skinned alive…” [Extinction nothing to sneeze at, Feb. 10 Odd Thoughts, TIMES]. According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, harp seals account for almost all the seals harvested commercially in Canada: “The Northwest Atlantic harp seal population is… at the highest level seen in 30 years.” There is “only a small harvest of grey and hooded seals.” The northwest Atlantic grey seal population has seen a 30-fold increase since the 1960s. Opposition to the Canadian seal harvest has nothing to do with conservation: none of the species involved is at any risk of extinction from commercial hunting, which is highly regulated and closely monitored. Trades offer fast track by Cole Wagner editorial@mrtimes.com

Randy Uttaro maintains a focused look on his face while the trowel in his hands works through a repetitive series of motions – swipe, scoop, slap, repeat. His hands move tentatively at first, but as he starts to get comfortable, mud slides off the trowel and onto a brick quicker and quicker. A slight smile teases at the corner of his mouth – he’s getting better at this. Uttaro is a student in Thomas Haney Secondary’s (THS) 21-week masonry course. By the end of the course, he will be building walls and arches made from brick and mortar. The most advanced in the class might even progress to building a fireplace. The masonry program at THS is a part of the larger trade-education partnership between a number of post-secondary institutes and secondary schools in B.C.

The program is called Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACEIT), and as the name implies, offers secondary school students a fast track opportunity to becoming a Red Seal-certified tradesperson. ACEIT is growing in School District 42, with nine separate programs offered at three Maple Ridge high schools. The program is a rigorous alternative to traditional high school classes – students in ACEIT programs spend six hours a day, fives days a week learning their chosen trade, said Steve Wiebe, the district vice principal of trades programs. Wiebe, who was instrumental in bringing the masonry program to THS, will host an information session on ACEIT at THS tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 24). The info session starts at 7 p.m. and goes to 9, and will include information about all the trade academy programs in the local school district.

WATER MAIN FLUSHING The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 2, 2015. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. SEAN ST. JEAN

I have had a bump in the road but am back on track and will continue to give it my best.

This competition has been truly life-changing for me. My weight is down, my mood is up, and my mind is calmer than it has ever been. Who knew that hot yoga (and hot bootcamp!) could make such an impact on my life. The number one change for me is that I’ve learned that it isn’t selfish to prioritize my own needs. If you want to read more, I’ve written extensively about this awesome journey on my blog: seanstjean.wordpress.com

DAWN MARCHAND

So my brother is going to join me on Sun 10:45am at PoCo for Yin Yang...God help me, I hope I can do this new class LOL. At the end of the class they do the third eye, then you make your hands into the shape of a heart, and let your angels smile down on you...it gets me every time. And even when I am just talking about it - it gets to me that my angels haven’t been gone long and it’s like a band aid of emotions because I feel very connected. I wasn’t expecting such an emotional connection, but I love how yoga is helping me become more in touch and stronger, in the moment.

RYAN WILDGRUBE Well so far it’s been going great. Doing yoga combined with the gym, and watching my diet is really giving me good results. Although I did not lose as much weight as I did the week before, I am noticing better definition in my muscles, and suspect that muscle growth is partly to blame for the lower weight loss. That is not a problem as the more muscle I get, the more calories my body will burn. I am finding that working out at the gym combined with deep stretch and relaxation yoga classes work really good together as the yoga really helps take out any soreness and stiffness from the gym. I hope every one else is having good results.

I feel so welcome at Oxygen Yoga, by the instructors and the others in the classes. I’m starting to learn the different poses and can follow along easier. I find that I’m getting more flexible each time I go. I seem to have more energy, which helps me in my daily life. I have also been eating better and drinking more water, so I feel healthier all around.

DON TAYLOR After three weeks at Oxygen Yoga, I’ve noticed small changes, simple things like being able to bend over and touch the floor. I seem to have more energy, I wake up and I go instead of dragging myself out of bed. All the instructors I have worked with have been helpful, motivational, and listen to me on a personal level. I thought it would be uncomfortable being a 270 lb guy in a yoga class, but everyone has been welcoming and non-judgemental.

15th annual PRESENTING THE

READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS

Troy Landreville/TIMES

TIMES readers have responded with enthusiasm again and made the 15th annual Readers’ Choice Awards a great success. These five readers are representative of thousands of local residents who voted in the annual event. As a result ,more than a hundred local businesses will receive awards tonight. Left to right in the photo are faithful TIMES readers Judy Daykin, Lois M. Corsie, Beverly Melnychuk, Mary “Happy” Coyle, and Sherry Ridley.

Business competition

TIMES’ readers pick the very best

Readers’ Choice certificates are a lasting symbol of accomplishment that local companies can hang on their walls with pride.

A

community-wide jury has voted and now The TIMES is proud to announce the winners of the 2014 Readers Choice Awards. The continuing uniqueness of the Readers’ Choice program, and a major reason for its success, is that readers – through their online ballots or by submitting their preferences on the published ballot – really do decide the winners and they do that every time that they enter a preference for any or all of the 115 categories on the ballot. (A full list of the winners is on page B3). The 15th annual competition, sponsored by The TIMES, grows in popularity every year and while there are always first-time winners, their ranks are often outnumbered by a long list of well established businesses chosen by loyal TIMES readers in the various

categories on the ballot. London Drugs led the list of multiple category winners this year, finishing first in four categories, Fuller Watson with three selections, and two-time winners were Home Restaurant, West Coast Ford, Alouette Animal Hospital, Meridian Meats, Star Five, and Haney Automotive. Unlike other programs that try to identify the most popular businesses in the community, The TIMES Readers’ Choice is democracy in action – the ballots for all the categories are counted and the winners in each category are declared. Readers are the judges. Winners in all categories have been invited to a special reception tonight, where they will be honoured by their peers and presented with a plaque that can hang prominently in their business to inform customers of their high-degree of sales excellence and service. This year’s winners represent a real cross section of the community from mom-and-pop shops to larger retailers that are located from one end of the community to the other – from east Maple Ridge through to westerly borders of Pitt

Meadows. “Once again our readers have TIMES publisher Brian McCristall demonstrated their commitment to described the program as a shinchoosing the best of the best based ing example of the newspaper, on their own experiences of shopits readers, and businesses workping and dining locally.” ing together to spotlight business Readers’ Choice, because of its excellence popularity, has within the “We are encouraged become a tradcities of ition in Maple by the continuing Maple Ridge Ridge and Pitt and Pitt and growing interest Meadows and Meadows. We Make the World’s Best Mattress

Today, many people prefer a memory foam mattress for its pressure-relieving comfort, ability to conform and adapt to each person’s body, and outstanding motion isolation. Even so, traditional memory foam technology hasn’t changed much since it was invented more than 40 years ago. While it can provide great comfort to many, others find that memory foam mattresses can sleep too hot, sink in too deeply or make it hard to adjust sleep positions in the night. Isn’t it about time that someone reinvented memory foam? Introducing the new iComfort Sleep System by Serta, featuring our Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam - the world’s first memory foam infused with the support and cooling touch of Serta’s MicroSupport™ gel. This revolutionary new memory foam is designed to deliver superior pressure relief and more targeted support while sleeping cooler than ordinary memory foam. Plus, it is antimicrobial and dust mite resistant to help protect your mattress from potential allergens.

* * * * * The guys at Haney Automotive are fantastic! They were

accommodating to my needs, being as I was in a tough situation. They explained things about my vehicle to me in a way that I could actually understand (I don’t speak “car”). They were finished when they said they would be finished. And they said they would even send out reminders of when I will need servicing again so I don’t end up in another dangerous situation. I can’t express in words how much I appreciate all their hard work and friendly attitude. I would recommend Haney Automotive to anyone. Thanks Brandon. Sarah Benson

If you have never been to Haney Automotive we recommend that you ask your friends and neighbours, see the reviews on Google and look over the testimonials at our website www.haneyautomotive.com Then drop in for a meet and greet, I would like to get to know you and start earning your trust. Cheers, Brandon

Dan Beitel long had a dream of opening a restaurant. But the size of his proposed restaurant grew smaller and smaller with every child he had. Now, with three kids, he joked that all he can afford is a travelling kitchen. Two years ago now, Beitel launched Hunger Management Food Truck – his restaurant on wheels. He and his portable kitchen can be spotted in various locations around Maple Ridge most days, including at the farmers market. In the 15th annual Readers Choice Awards, he won the distinction of offering the best meal under $10 for his selection of sandwiches and homemade potato chips – which are made up fresh every morning. This is the second consecutive year winning the title.

Getting lost in the stories

Rick Moyer/TIMES

Tomes & Tales is not the stereotypical stuffy, dark and slightly musty smelling used book store that is crammed tight with floor-to-ceiling shelves of books. Instead, this little shop in the heart of Pitt Meadows is bright, spacious, and services up not only a broad selection of books from almost every genre, but shop owner Faith Wallington also makes a mean cup of tea, hot chocolate, or coffee. It’s these services, and the offering of greeting cards, jewelry, and gift baskets that helped earn the five-year-old shop the distinction of being the best bookstore in town in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows 15th annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read (top right) and her husband Steven, as well as Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker (bottom right) and his wife Terry, were among 200 guests at the chamber’s business excellence gala Saturday night.

Vicki McLeod has worked with, and for, various levels of government, many of the community’s non-profit organizations, and countless small businesses in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows during the past several decades. And in the last 20 years, she has shared her range of talents as a business coach, marketing expert, social media guru, and community cheerleader from the helm of a business she and her husband, Ian, share – Main Street Communications. It was all those years of dedication to this community and all that she has given on a personal and corporate basis that earned McLeod distinction Saturday night. McLeod was crowned business leader of the year by the Chamber of Commerce Serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. She never expected to win, McLeod said. She’d been nominated for at least three chamber awards in past, as well as provincial and national small business accolades – but she’d never won. “I’ve had my fair share of nominations – how does it go ‘always the bridesmaid, never the bride’,” she chuckled. But that changed Saturday night. Honeyland Canada was crowned the 2014 agri-business of the year, Simplified Business Solutions was given accolades as the home business of the year, Maple Ridge Towing was acknowledged as the small business (1-20 employees) of the year, Meadowridge School was crowned as business of the year (21+ employees), Alouette Addiction Services was given the non-profit organization award, and Lorraine Bates and Tom Cameron – of the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society and Country Fest – each received a community spirit award. • More at www.mrtimes.com, search “excellence”

The Ridge Meadows Burrards (in blue) fell to the Coquitlam Adanacs in the U14 gold medal final of the provincial field lacrosse Tier 1 championships, held in Burnaby over the weekend.

Field lacrosse

Burrards win B.C. medals The Ridge Meadows Burrards brought home five medals from the B.C. championships, held over the weekend in Burnaby.

While none of it was coloured gold, the Ridge Meadows Burrards brought home plenty of hardware from last weekend’s Subway British Columbia Lacrosse Association (BCLA) Under 16, U14 and U12 Tier 1 and Tier 2 field lacrosse tournament. The Feb. 20-22 provincial tournament took place at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. In total, 48 teams from Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland and the Interior competed for provincial supremacy in the three age groups.

• • • • • •

In the U14 Tier 1 division, the Burrards won silver after falling to the Coquitlam Adanacs in the gold medal final. On top of the U14 Tier 1 silver, Burrards teams won bronze in U16 Tier 2, bronze in U12 Tier 1, and silver and bronze in U12 Tier 2. Ridge Meadows’ Marc Downey was named as the U12 Tier 2 Fair Play Coach. Ridge Meadows players winning Warrior Fair Play Award included Daytin Vidovich (U16 Tier 1), Ryan Arce (U16 Tier 2), Austen Cooke (U14 Teir 1), Cameron Ickert (U12 Tier 1), and Owen Johnson and Kenneth Derby (U12 Tier 2). One of the Subway Team Sportsmanship awards went to the Ridge Meadows No. 2 U16 team.

Karina LeBlanc knows how to save a goal and she clearly knows how to sell the game of soccer. Last Wednesday morning the Maple Ridge athlete picked up the phone and sold a caller 100 tickets to 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup games in Ottawa. “Make sure that my teammates know about that call,” the veteran goalkeeper for Canada’s national soccer team said loudly. Whether she will get the call for this year’s tournament – starting June 6 – won’t be known until late May when team rosters are set, but LeBlanc still speaks passionately about what would be her Canadian record fifth Women’s World Cup, this one on home soil. “I remember seeing Donovan Bailey win that [1996] gold medal and seeing the flag rise and being like, ‘I want that.’ “World Cup is the bigTIMES files gest event for soccer, so Veteran national women’s team every World Cup, any goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc visited time you get a chance her hometown of Maple Ridge in to be part of one, it’s September. incredible. But this one’s at home, so it makes it more personal, more special. You get to play in front of friends and family, but you also get to play in front of the country. Our team’s goal is to inspire a nation.” LeBlanc, who was born in Atlanta, lived in Dominica until she was eight and then grew up in Maple Ridge, arrived in Ottawa after spending a couple of days on a helicopter adventure in the Rockies during a break from training. It was hard to tell from her reaction whether that was on any list of approved outside activities for national team members. “If anybody knows me, they know that, on the week off, I’ll usually fly down to somewhere warm and debrief. But it was great, a chance to connect with Banff and get out and about. ... I’m a thrill seeker. I thought it was safe.” The Canadian team will soon head to Cyprus for its final pre-World Cup tournament in early March, and there’s an April 9 friendly in France. Whether the players then briefly rejoin their pro clubs – LeBlanc starts in net for the National Women’s Soccer League’s Chicago Red Stars – is to be determined, but the push to the World Cup begins in earnest in May. Canada plays two preliminary round games in Edmonton and one in Montreal.
