New toys pouring in A last-minute donation of 55 new toys – plus a commitment to get more involved in helping the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society in the future – was a welcome message received by co-chair Lorraine Bates. The Charlene Reaveley Children’s Charity Society, created after the namesake was killed by a drunk driver in Coquitlam several years back, holds an annual toy drive and chose to help the local charity this holiday season. • More at www.mrtimes.com

The spirit of the season was on full display during an event last week that involved a very special train. by Eric Zimmer ezimmer@mrtimes.com
Every year, CP Rail takes decorated trains across the continent in an effort to raise food and funds for local food banks, and to help out the less fortunate at Christmas. As always, that included a stop in Maple Ridge – at the Port Haney station across from the Billy Miner Pub & Alehouse. And once again, despite iffy weather, thousands turned out to see the train all lit up with Christmas lights, to see entertainers perform, catch a look at Ol’ St. Nick, and to hear about how much money and food was raised nationally, as well as locally for the Friends In Need Food Bank. New this year, CP added a stop in Pitt Meadows immediately following the Maple Ridge show. And an estimated 3,000 people came out to enjoy the sights and sounds of the special train, which parked directly on the Harris Road Crossing, and – in a special twist – opened both sides of the performance boxcar, allowing people to take in the performance from both the north and south side of the tracks. The stop is one of just two that the train makes where both sides are open. “The event went wonderfully well,” said Pitt Meadows mayor, John Becker. “It was the only time of year that folks were pleased to have Harris Road blocked by a train.”

And there’s a good chance it will happen again. “CP wanted to see if the response from Pitt Meadows justified consideration of future stops, and I have heard that CP was blown away by the response and the food bank support,” Becker added. The dual stop also created a bit of a friendly challenge between the two communities to see which City could raise more food and donations for the Friends In Need Food Bank. When all was said and done, Pitt Meadows came out on top. The final tallies saw Pitt Meadows raise 3,419 pounds of food, compared to Maple Ridge’s almost 13,420 pounds – which based on a per capita formula – was less than Pitt Meadows. Between resident donations, the previous weekend’s Firefighters for Families drive, and the mayors’ challenge, Pitt collected a total of $13,007, while Maple Ridge managed $16,863. These amounts included a $7,000 CP Rail donation to each City. In total, almost 17,000 pounds of food and $29,870 was collected between the two Cities. “I’m disappointed that I lost my bet with John,” Maple Ridge

An urgent plea for financial help has been made, but it may come too late to keep Iron Horse Youth Safe House from closing on New Year’s Eve. Thousands came out to enjoy the sights and sounds of the CP Holiday Train in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. mayor Nicole Read remarked. “But you know what, I’m happy to raise Pitt Meadows’ flag if that means the food bank gets more food.” Becker echoed her sentiment: “The point of course is that both communities really stepped up for the less advantaged.”
“It was the best show that I’ve seen,” said Mary Robson, executive director of the Friends In Need Food Bank. “Having the train open on both sides in Pitt Meadows was a really neat experience. Sir James Cuddy really connected with the crowd, due to unique venue.”

‘Nicolas Nation’ rallies behind two-year-old tot The community is rallying around two-year-old Nicolas Schwuchow. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
N
icolas Schwuchow has a mop of red curls, sky blue eyes, and a gentle smile; he’s able to sing his ABC’s, count up to 13, and loves to read and play with his big sister Isabel. Two-year-old Nicolas also has a nation behind him, as the happygo-lucky tot goes through life with serious physical challenges. “He’s super bright, really funny, he’s got this incredible sense of humour, he’s always happy,” his mom Petra said. When Nicolas missed his first significant milestone, sitting on his own at six months of age, his parents Rolf and Petra took him to see a pediatrician, who referred them to a neurologist at B.C. Children’s Hospital. After a series of tests, then eight-month-old Nicolas was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (“SMA”) Type 1, a disease that affects one in 6,000 people. SMA is a terminal and degenerative disease that causes weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles in infants and children. Simply, SMA eventually impacts every muscle in the
body, hindering the ability to walk, stand, sit, eat, breathe, and swallow. The mind always remains unaffected and children with SMA are bright, sensitive, and playful in spite of their failing bodies. oving forward, Nicolas’s support system transcends his immediate family that includes Rolf, Petra, and four-year-old “Izzy.” Many friends have stepped in to help create the “A Boy Named Nicolas” Campaign to assist the family with raising much needed funds to assist the family with providing Nicolas with the opportunity to live a normal life. This includes an above ground pool for water therapy, a wheelchair-accessible van, and major modifications to the home that the family has lived in for the past six years. All of these renovations will give Nicolas freedom and security. Over the past three months, “Nicolas Nation” has taken the project to a whole new level for the family. With $18,000 raised and $200,000 to go, the team – which started with accountant Claire Gullmes and her husband Derek along with Calum Crawford – has now set its sights on helping the family even further. “We’ve created our own little family around these guys, and a team to support them,” Gullmes said. “The reality is, you can’t do it with one person.”

Two-year-old Nicolas Schwuchow and his family including, clockwise from top left, dad Rolf, mom Petra, and four-year-old sister Isabel, have received huge support from friends and members of the community.

the home a liveable space for Nicolas for years to come, said local businessmen Dean Barbour, who is part of “Nicolas Nation.” The goal is to make the home “a lot more accessible,” Rolf said. In order to complete the project “Nicolas Nation” has grown to include web developer Robb Farion, Barbour, REMAX real-
tor Jim Williams, and Jonathan Tarnowski, manager of the Maple Ridge Liquor Store on Lougheed Hwy and 207th. On his own, Tarnowski and his team are supporting Nicolas by offering five per cent of all liquor sales to the campaign when patrons present their Nicolas Card and say his name at time of purchase. To date, they have raised more than $3,000. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming for the family. “There’s no words that can say what has happened with the community that has stepped up, not only with those who we know but people who have come into our life,” Rolf said. “I’d say that’s been an incredible experience.” he word “believe” holds much weight in the Schwuchow household. The word hangs above their dining room table. Added to this is Nicolas’ determination to find ways to move, to sit, to stand and to laugh. Rolf stresses “We gain hope with each micro-success and of course, we believe in Nicolas.” To donate to Nicolas’ campaign online, visit www.youcaring. com/medical-fundraiser/a-boynamed-nicolas/164158. Be A Green Angel.
Thank you for your support, Pitt Meadows! The CP HolidayTrain was a great success! Over 3,000 residents were estimated to have attended the event at the Harris Road rail crossing, enjoying the music of Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo. The final tally for donations to the Friends in Need Food Bank at the Pitt Meadows event came to 3,419 pounds of food, and $13,007.48 in cash donations (including $7,000 donated by CP Rail at the event).Thank you, Pitt Meadows, for supporting your community and showing what Pitt Meadows is all about.
Transportation Referendum – You may have heard about the upcoming referendum that will be put to residents in Metro Vancouver asking about adding 0.05% to the provincial sales tax to raise revenue for transit improvements throughout the region. Find out more about the plans and what it means for Pitt Meadows by visiting pittmeadows.bc.ca or movinginalivableregion.ca
Be a Snow Angel.
The amount of waste generated by residents typically increases over the holiday season. Give memories, not garbage. •Give experiences.Think about interests and hobbies that your friends and families enjoy. •Give gifts that last. They can become heirlooms in your family too. •Give local gifts. Items that have not travelled far tend to have less packaging and be made of simpler materials. Learn more about being a Green Angel at metrovancouver.org.
City bylaws require all residential and business occupants to clear the public sidewalks on their property as soon as possible after a snowfall, and no later than 10:00 am. But for some residents, particularly seniors and persons with disabilities, shovelling snow can be difficult and even dangerous. They need your help - they need a Snow Angel. In the event of heavy snowfall, please keep your neighbours in mind and consider offering your support with snow removal.
Council This Month The City has released its Corporate Business Plan and Budget, including Department Business Plans and Budgets, for 2015. Business Plans and Budgets were formally presented on December 10 & 11, 2014, and Council will deliberate on the budget on January 21, 22 and 26 (if a third date is required) from 5:30 to 9:00pm. Public feedback is encouraged and welcomed. The public can offer feedback by visiting pittmeadows.bc.ca or emailing budget@ pittmeadows.bc.ca.

Our View
Christmas is for everyone No one should have to be alone at Christmas. That was the philosophy behind creation of the Christmas Haven. While many people enjoy the merriment of the season surrounded by close friends and loved ones, there was an uncomfortable awareness that others would face the holidays alone. The idea started with an impromptu Christmas event hosted in the late 1990s by Barb Chipperfield and some volunteers at the Friends In Need Food Bank. A billiards hall on Lougheed Highway was closing down for the holidays and offered its space. Chipperfield and friends secured some snacks and food. Board games and entertainment were brought in, and with volunteers offering a few hours of their time, it was a casual night of socializing and endless laughter. That event only happened once, but the concept behind it never died. Fast forward to Christmas 2000 – the Friends In Need Food Bank was headed by TIMES assistant editor Roxanne Hooper. She and her partner had close friends and acquaintances who were going to be alone for the holidays. With help from friends and colleagues, including Lorraine Bates and Tom Cameron at the Christmas hamper society, the idea for Christmas Haven took off. Thanks to numerous volunteers and countless donations, about 100 people came through from Christmas Eve through Boxing Day. It was never intended to be exclusive to homeless or underprivileged families. It was open to anyone, rich or poor, who would otherwise be alone during the holidays – the only restrictions were against drugs, alcohol, and illegal or inappropriate behaviour. Through years of heart-warming stories the event has changed, but it still holds true to the original goal: to bring people together at Christmas. Because, as we stated from the start, no one should have to be alone at Christmas. • Read more at mrtimes.com, click on ‘Opinion’

Merry Christmas, everyone! “A big Ukrainian feast on Christmas Eve, new PJs for the kids, and watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!” – Kelly FIelding Collard “Decorating the tree, and my mom hangs wrapped-up chocolates on the tree (Hungarian thing). ” – Pam Karasz “Decorating the Christmas tree and dropping off canned food and toys for the food bank during Christmas with the kids.” – Joshy Reddy “Contacting the Christmas hamper’s Good Neighbour program to put us in touch with a family that needs a bit of help.” – Alexis Carnduff “The opening of one gift on Christmas Eve!” – Amber Stone Potter “Fish and/or seafood on Xmas Eve. “Decorating the tree, baking Christmas treats, and making ornaments with the kids.” – Adeline Mei Ling Tufts “Every year we all get a new ornament for the tree, which is opened after we go through our stockings. Our stocking stuffers are always wrapped and/or decorated in some fashion, therefore giving us the opportunity to open many little gifts, too. A big Christmas breakfast together, and then we play the board game Santa delivers every year for family time!” – Gloria Archambault
“Myself, sister, mom, and dad went for car rides around different neighbourhoods, looking at all the decorated houses, and sang Christmas carols. Then we would stop at the old A&W when it was on Dewdney Trunk and have hamburgers.” – Lynne Bailey
“Opening our stockings to find all kinds of fun things, plus a bag of chocolate coin, walnuts, and an orange in the toe! Happy memories from generation to generation.” – Susan Crape
“Decorating gingerbread houses and cookies! We did it with my grandma and mom, now doing it with my girls and my sisters’ kids!” – Dawn Savage “Decorate the tree and house on Dec. 1. On Christmas Eve we all get to open one gift, which is PJs and slippers. Christmas Day we open stockings, have breakfast, then open our gifts.” – Janessa Munz “Our family (my husband and I, our three married children and their spouses, and our four grandchildren) always read the story of Jesus’s birth on Christmas morning, right before we open gifts… we are all reminded that Christmas is about love, sharing, caring, and helping others… and not about getting, but about giving.” – Gail Budiselich-Finnson “Putting stockings up Christmas Eve, and family dinner Christmas Day with the crackers and those silly paper hats we wear.” – Janet Brown “Watching Xmas classics, leaving out milk and cookies for Santa, and sprinkling reindeer food on the front lawn!” – Gayle Curtis

Surrogate Santa won’t give up seat soon ‘You never know what the kids are going to say’ by Jennifer Saltman

very December for the past four years, Harley Smith’s work day has started out with the donning of an unusual uniform: shiny black boots, a fur-trimmed red suit, long white gloves, a pair of wirerimmed glasses and a red-andwhite hat atop his head. Then, he’s ready to face a day of hearing Christmas wishes from a long line of children. Smith, 71, works for Hire A Santa and is a graduate of Vancouver’s North Pole Santa
School, which trains many of the Santas you see in malls and at corporate events across B.C. each Christmas season. The school has been around since 2013 and has produced 20 to 25 surrogate Santas. And this year, Smith once again suited up to take his seat in Santa’s chair at Maple Ridge’s Haney Place Mall. “I love the music, I love sitting in the malls and watching people... the kids are all spirited up,” he said. After he retired, Smith told his wife he was going to be Santa. “I love Christmas, I love kids. I’ve been Santa all my life, I think, just never had time for it you know?” Getting into the character of the

Siblings battle for holiday lights supremacy
Brothers Todd and Troy Deane-Freeman compete in a friendly rivalry of who has the best light display each year, but Mother Nature may have helped one beat out the other this year. by Christopher Sun
csun@mrtimes.com
Todd Deane-Freeman normally enjoys putting up his prized-Christmas light display, but his joy this year came crashing down when one of his pricey props smashed into a neighbour’s siding, courtesy of Mother Nature. For six years now, Todd and his younger brother Troy have been busy outdoing each other by creating the best Christmas light display at their respective homes. Todd has been the undefeated champion, which is decided amongst family and friends. However, the windstorms earlier this month wrecked havoc on his decorations, blowing things down almost every night. The final straw came when one of his two $150 metal, lighted trees was destroyed. “It was my pride and joy,” Todd said, explaining he bought the two metal trees after Christmas last year. “It broke through the rope and went flying into my neighbour’s siding. It caused about $300 to $400 in damages.” Todd estimated that he has about 150,000 lights, but only put up half this year because of his frustrations. He spent $300 on Boxing Day last year, purchasing half-priced decorations in anticipation of creating something grand this year. “Everybody says it looks good, it looks the same as before, but it wasn’t what I had in mind,” Todd said about his creation this year. “We (he and his brother) haven’t been that aggressive towards each other this year.” Across town, Troy didn’t suffer as much problems as his brother, but coincidentally, he too experienced a similar damage. “I ended up getting a hole in my siding,” Troy said. “It’s kind of funny. I had the ladder set up and put a

hole in my siding. A five inch gash.” Troy added about 500 more lights to his display this year and like his brother, lent some of his stuff to neighbours. He has his lights on from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every night, but on weekends, he plays recorded music as well. His display can be seen at 23683 Rock Ridge Dr.
Todd has his lights on from 5 p.m. to about 10:30 p.m. and his home is located at 20497 115a Ave. The brothers plan to meet soon to crown this year’s winner and when asked if Troy will finally win, due to this year’s weather problems, Todd’s competitive streak came out. “There is no doubt I’m the winner still,” Todd said. “I guarantee it.” Despite this year’s problems, both brothers said they will continue the competition next year.

Dear Santa: Five-year-old Kingston has been “half naughty, half nice” this year, and asked Santa for Bumblebee and Grimlock Transformers, as well as a bag of candy for Christmas. In exchange he will be leaving 10 cookies and 10 glasses of milk, plus popsicles, ice cream, and cherries for Santa’s reindeer. His Kindergarten classmate at St. Patrick’s Catholic School, five-year-old Elijah, said he’s been very good this year and hoped Santa would bring him a Lego train set, a Lego building, and some extra Lego pieces for the holiday. This was just a sampling of the letters written by 44 students in two Kindergarten classes at the Maple Ridge private school during the past few weeks. Those letters, in turn, were rolled up and put in paper stockings, hung on a fake fireplace on the bulletin board out-

Christmas dinner
Cooks carve up a storm Salvation Army Caring Place’s kitchen staff and volunteers are busy this time of the year. Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com
It takes two weeks of planning for Rob Field to prepare Christmas dinner and it’s not because he’s slow, he just has hundreds of mouths to feed. Field is the food service coordinator at the Salvation Army’s Caring Place. On
Friday, he, along with staff and volunteers, were busy preparing two Christmas dinners. The first Christmas dinner was for that evening, for 250 Caring Place guests. The second dinner, for the annual Christmas Haven, is at The ACT for 350 guests, which the Salvation Army is hired to cater. “You gotta be organized and plan things well ahead,” Field said, who has been cooking for 35 years, 1.5 years at the Caring Place. “We also have regular dinners and lunches to do, so we have to fit everything in.”

Giving the gift of dessert

hristmas is the season for giving, and probably the best gift I can give to you is our much-loved recipe for my all time favourite dessert: crème caramel. Although the process of this recipe requires a bit of care and attention, it is sure to become a favourite decadent dessert in your home and with guests. Crème caramel is much like crème brûlée, but the caramelized sugar goes into the ramekin first, rather than torched on top with a Brûlée. The result is a complex caramel layer on top of the inverted custard, and a residual complex caramel sauce that is a perfect companion with each bite of the delicate custard. Enjoy!

Run offers healthy start to new year
A Pitt Meadows tradition returns again to Osprey Village on the morning of Jan 1. by Eric Zimmer and Troy Landreville
editorial@mrtimes.com
While much of the community may be sleeping or quietly recovering on the morning of New Year’s Day, it will be a different story at Osprey Village in Pitt Meadows. For the sixth year in a row, The Generation Charity Family Fun Run, organized by Eric and Lorie Muller is set to take place. The goal is to have fun, brave the elements, and kick off the new year in a healthy way. “We like the informal side of it,” Eric said. “We do other events that are much more formal, but this is low-key.” There is no agenda, timers, or sponsors. Keeping things low-key may be the idea, although last year, 140 people participated in the run. While there is no fee to run, donations are accepted for the local charity Athletes In Kind (AIK,) of which Lorie is the chair. AIK supports families with children in cancer treatment at BC Children’s Hospital. Those who donate a minimum of $20 will receive a pair of running socks. Last year, donations totalled $1,000. The run features a two, five, and 10 kilometre route along a marked course that runs parallel to the Fraser River. Pre-registration is not required, but those taking part are encouraged to head

Jan. 1 for the past 20 years. The event gets underway just outside “We’d always do it separately because
our kids were little,” Lorie said. “Eric would do the early morning shift and go with his friends to the trail and I’d go after, when he got home.” In late December 2009, Lorie decided to get some friends involved and sent out an email blast, asking them if they’d like to take part in a run to celebrate the arrival of 2010. Local media ran with the story, so to speak, and 67 people showed up with their running shoes strapped on in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2010. “It started out so casual,” Lorie said. “Now, everybody asks, ‘Are you doing your run?’ And we say, ‘Of course’”. Participants range from the avid runners, to revellers who celebrated the calendar change well into the new year, to shift workers who haven’t gone to bed yet. For the Mullers, the attraction to running is the simplicity of it, contrasted the challenge it brings. “You could take part on your own or with a massive group of people,” Eric said. “It’s so versatile.” On New Year’s Day, be prepared for the elements and dress in layers, Eric stressed, because the event will happen regardless of what Old Man Winter has up his sleeve. Walkers are “absolutely welcome,” Eric added. The first year the runners and walkers faced sideways rain. Last year, the weather was clear and pretty dry. “But that doesn’t matter to us, really. We like how it changes from season to season,” Eric said. “That’s the other beauty of running, especially where we live, because you can run all year-round.” Walkers are “absolutely welcome,” he added.
Polar bear swim
Attendance at annual New Years lake dip continues to grow
Alouette Lake is the place where people go to turn the calendar and welcome another year with a splash. by Christopher Sun
csun@mrtimes.com
On New Year’s Day, Mark Vosper is jumping into a lake and he’s taking others with him. For the last three years, Vosper has brought his family to Alouette Lake, meeting friends and colleagues there for a dip into the fresh, cool water. While just thinking of jumping into a cold lake in January would give most people the shivers, Vosper insists it’s not a horrible ordeal. “The first time I did it, I thought it was going to be freezing, but then I took the plunge and it was not that bad,” Vosper said. “It’s fresh. You’re only in there for a few moments.” For the upcoming day, Vosper planes to dress up, but he hasn’t decided as what. In previous years he has seen people

dressed in formal attire, as a geisha, a samurai, and people in pajamas and onesies. The annual polar bear swim at Alouette Lake has grown since the Ridge Meadows Outdoor Club started doing it more than 20 years ago, explained club member Heather Kirk. This year, she challenged a friend who is not a club member, to take the plunge, which is probably how the event has grown in popularity. She estimates 40 people attend, but many come before and after the club participates at noon. “It isn’t an event we organize [for the community],” Kirk said. “It’s something the club started over 20 years ago and people found out about it.” Club members meet at the boat launch before noon on Jan. 1, taking the plunge once the clock strikes 12. Kirk warns the public that they participate at their own risk and should be prepared if they plan to partake as there is no parking at the boat launch and there isn’t much for facilities, as well. “There is no place to change,” Kirk said.

He was invited there to share the story of his late brother, Terry Fox, and participate in the Terry Fox Runs at schools in Dubai as well as a community run in Doha. During one of his days off, he took a copy of his hometown newspaper, The TIMES, out to the desert and visited the Inland Sea (Khawr al Udayd), an inlet of the Perisan Gulf.

WHY SETTLE FOR LESS!
M A R K E T P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,
I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill
