Youth shelter receives one month leave

Local businessmen will match community donations of up to $12,500 to keep shelter open. by Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com

Youth staying at Iron Horse Safe House have a home for at least one more month. Local Tim Hortons franchise owners Barj Dhahan and Gurtek Shoker are donating up to $12,500 to help Alouette Home Start Society (AHSS) keep the local youth shelter open until the end of January, said executive director Stephanie Ediger. On Dec. 22, Dhahan and Shoker presented a $5,000 cheque to AHSS, and the rest will be matched by donations received. “This gives us some Stephanie Ediger time to work on those AHSS executive director long-term plans, without interrupting the overall services we provide,” Ediger said. “We are very grateful.” Shelter staff and the City have been working to keep the safe house open for six months, buying time to find a long-term solution. The province has committed to paying one-third of the cost to keep the shelter open for that time, if matched by the federal government and AHSS. A federal funding decision was expected Monday, but was not announced prior to press deadline.

Haven brings people together

Almost 300 people attend annual dinner held at The ACT Maple Ridge. Christopher Sun csun@mrtimes.com

Instead of having Christmas Eve dinner alone, almost 300 people decided to spend it with their neighbours. Maple Ridge’s annual Christmas Haven dinner was held on Wednesday, with 289

guests attending the event at The ACT. “It was wonderful, magical and fantastic,” said co-organizer Corisa Bell about the event. “It was such a great evening. Everyone had an amazing time and there was such a great sense of community. It was wonderful,” she said. Christmas Haven was originally conceived so people in the community didn’t have to spend the holidays alone. The event now attracts small families as

Every adult and child who attended was given a Christmas present, which for some, may be the only present they receive, Bell added. “It gives me goosebumps,” she said about the gift giving. “Some people open it right away and want to see what others got, but some say no, they are going to wait to open it on Christmas Day.”

Accidents plague Pitt A few accidents in Pitt Meadows kept local police and firefighters busy during the holidays. One was an incident involving a young man struck and killed by a train near the West Coast Express station off Harris Road in Pitt Meadows at about 2 a.m. Christmas morning. The case is under investigation, Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said Monday. Meanwhile, there was also a singlevehicle crash on Lougheed Highway near Old Dewdney Trunk Road on Dec. 27. The woman driver had to be cut out of her SUV after colliding with a pole, but escaped serious injury, Dunlop said. • More at www.mrtimes.com

Hiker rescued from ridge after a week Search members spent a long cold night in an emergency shelter in Golden Ears Provincial Park, after locating a 23-year-old man hiking to Garibaldi Park.

More Photos Online

Winter conditions slowed the search for a missing hiker. But he was found, after spending more than a week near the summit of Golden Ears Mountain.

by Roxanne Hooper

rhooper@mrtimes.com

A 23-year-old Maple Ridge man suffering from mild frostbite, dehydration, blisters, sleepdeprivation, and hunger, was airlifted off the Golden Ears last week, after seven or eight days hunkered down in the park’s remote emergency shelter. “He was in pretty good shape, all things considered,” said Rick Laing, manager of the Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue, explaining all the man had left for food was raw eggs, with no heat source to cook food or provide warmth for himself. Manoeuvring through winter conditions on Dec. 20, local rescuers combed the West and East Canyon, Viking Creek, and Evans Valley hiking trails for the young man reportedly traversing the park on a three-week hike to Garibaldi Provincial Park. The hiker left his Maple Ridge home on Dec. 10. His parents feared he was not well enough prepared with clothing, equipment, or experience to make such a long and complicated journey. A few days after his departure, his parents called police. In turn, RCMP called search and rescue on Dec. 18. But, uncertain which of the many possible routes the man could have mapped out for his foot trek to Garibaldi (including the Pitt Lake area, Squamish/ Whistler, or through Hope), rescue crews were unable to even begin a search, Laing said. In the days that followed, his family did some investigating of their own, and the search team was contacted by police again on Saturday. They’d learned the park rangers at Golden Ears

Provincial Park had witnessed the man entering the Maple Ridge park on Dec. 11 – the day after his journey commenced. Further investigation turned up his discarded soft-side cooler and some empty food cans in a dumpster in the West Canyon parking lot. That information helped narrow the search a little further, and gave Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue a point from which to start, Laing said. Sunday morning, about 7 a.m., a number of rescue members began combing the various trails off the West Canyon parking lot, and found signs that the missing hiker had camped overnight at least one night at Alder Flats. In the meantime, another team was sent up by helicopter at about 10 a.m. – once the clouds cleared – to a higher point on the mountain – Panorama Ridge. Recent snowfall and slick conditions made the search slow, but it was the crew searching the higher levels that eventually made voice contact with the missing hiker at about noon on Sunday. They were able to

locate him at the emergency shelter on a ridge on the approach to the Golden Ears summit at about 2 p.m. By the time the team physically laid eyes on the hiker and assessed his condition, however, it wasn’t possible to bring a helicopter in to the shelter area because of clouds, Laing said. Further, the man was in no shape to try to hike out to a pickup site some three to four hours away. “It was too risky to hike him out of there at that point,” Laing elaborated. Consequently, a chopper was still sent up, but only to drop supplies and food to the team, who then rejoined the man and hunkered down with him overnight in the shelter. “It was cozy,” Laing said, grateful he wasn’t among the half dozen bedded down in the tiny shack overnight. They heated up food, gave the hiker liquids and dry clothes, and waited out what Laing described as a small storm that saw gusts of wind drop the temperature outside to -15º C overnight. At about 4 a.m. the next morning (Dec. 22), Laing received a call from the team on the mountain, anxious to come home. They reported clear skies and no

wind, and confirmed it was safe to land a chopper. Three trips were made by helicopter, retrieving the hiker, searchers, and all the supplies – including ropes and equipment that had been strewn on the mountain during the rescue efforts, Laing said. Paramedics met the hiker and team at the old park services headquarters, where the search and rescue command centre had been set up since Saturday. The hiker was examined on scene, then taken to hospital for a further check over. But, Laing reported the man was released later that same day. At least 24 members were involved in various aspects of the search, and Laing said that what had started out as a “needle in a haystack” type of search turned out to be a good news story. “It was a great rescue,” he added, glad the team was able to return the young man home to his family in time for Christmas.

North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association

Herd given more room to roam by Troy Landreville

A 16-year-old Buck, a North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association (NFTRA) horse, looked on during a recent ribbon cutting for a new outdoor riding arena. The arena was made possible – in part – by a $13,000 donation from MeadowRidge Rotary.

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

A week before Christmas, a Yuletide wish came true at the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association (NFTRA) facility. On Thursday, Dec. 18, NFTRA supporters joined Peter and Ineke Boekhorst from the MeadowRidge Rotary Club for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the association’s new outdoor riding arena. The ceremony served as a “thank you” to sponsors who made the arena a reality. While total costs are still being calculated, the estimated price tag for the project is between $28,000 and $30,000. Title sponsor MeadowRidge Rotary, though the Sports’ Banquet Legacy Fund, donated $13,000 towards the cost of the new arena. “Without their support this dream would never have made it to reality so quickly,” NFTRA general manager Sharolyn Wandzura said. “The funding was to expire at the end of December, so I really wanted to get the project moving forward,

Troy Landreville/TIMES

since with MeadowRidge’s Rotary help we were 50 per cent on our way to raising enough funds.” While planning for the outdoor arena took 10 months, construction started in the beginning of December, and the fence was put up in midDecember. Jack Polo and Lafarge Aggregates were also key in bringing this project to completion, Wandzura added. The NFTRA gathered to “honour all the contributors who came together to bring hope to another generation of horse lovers of all sizes,” Wandzura said. “Our therapy herd now has more space to roam, frolic,

and move freely when not doing their innate magic with our riders.” The association also celebrated its new pasture fence line with a name plaque, to thank the City of Maple Ridge for its donation in the spring of 2014. NFTRA is a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons to children and adults with varying degrees of disabilities. Thirty per cent of the NFTRA’s clients come from Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows. Now that NFTRA has a place to call home guaranteed for five years, with hopes of 10 years, it is ramping up therapeutic programming to support

people between the ages of three and 73 through connecting with horses, Wandzura said. NFTRA’s main program is therapeutic riding which runs six days a week with more than 95 weekly riders being supported by close to 100 volunteers. There are nine NFTRA horses ranging in age from nine to 20. The association is always looking for volunteers and its next training session is Jan. 11, 2015.

Our View

A bit happier than ever For many people, the quiet days between Christmas and New Year’s Day are lost days. For others, they are days of introspection – days to reflect on the past and to look to the future with optimism… or to dwell on pessimism. This is ordinarily not a period of crazy-busy commerce in retail shops and stores – except for those who take the opportunity to return or exchange unwanted or ill-fitting gifts. In fact, apart from those who hope they’ll find some special deals among the leftovers on store shelves, it is usually welcomed as a wind-down period after the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, Christmas decorating, Christmas visiting… well, of Christmas in general. It’s a quiet time. It’s a time to sit a spell. It’s a time when most of us can set aside a moment to think. New Year’s Day is just an arbitrary point in the earth’s yearly trip around the sun. While it’s become the dominant starting point of that 365¼-day journey, that’s a recent development, as many cultures each had their own first day of the year – and some still do. So while there’s no real significance to the date in a physical sense – it’s not even a solstice or an equinox, which would be an astronomically recognizable benchmark – it is certainly a great time to set goals for the year ahead, and to make an annual evaluation of how well that exercise worked out last time. Many people find it a convenient time to make “new year’s resolutions,” and even those who don’t go about it in a formal way tend to take a moment to think about what they might change in their lives, to try to improve things for themselves and those they care about. In that spirit, we offer this simple resolution: let’s all try to be just a little bit better. All those little bits would go a long way to a much better 2015. Happy New Year! – B.G.

Ladies in bathing suits help a lot of people

Dear Editor, It is that time of year when we all try to be more generous, forgiving, understanding, and fanning the flames of Mr. Dickens’s Christmas Carol in our hearts, lest it grow cold and nastily stone-like. But unfortunately, locally, it is the time of year that some residents choose instead to complain about the yearly generosity of the Caddy Shack and all of its employees. One writer [Photo inappropriate, Dec. 11 Letters, TIMES] seemed to imply that nude photos were featured, rather than what

I suppose that, if the Caddy Shack caved in to a few naysayers, those same people would gladly step up to the plate with matching yearly donations to replace this loss to those in need in our community? Bing’s pictures tiring

Dear Editor, I was wondering if you give equal time to the opposition parties in your Faces and Places page. It seems that any time one of our elected members have our tax dollars to “bestow” (your word) on us, they get their picture in your paper. I consider that free advertising for them. To be fair, our opposition parties should get just as much of your free attention. Or at least also post a picture of the elected members and their names when they claw back our tax dollars in a way that ends up impacting our community. I’m getting really sick and tired of seeing Mr. Bing and Mr. Dalton’s pictures on that page. Bill Evans, Maple Ridge [Editor – Send us your pictures of people doing something positive for the community. Include names and basic details, and your submission will be included for consideration with the others.]

K R E A T M P L AC E s ’ C B C Thanks Bruce,

I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future.

Avian Influenza As you are likely aware, we are currently experiencing an outbreak of Avian Influenza in British Columbia. Owners of small flocks are asked to follow strict biosecurity guidelines and to restrict movements of poultry and poultry products at this time. Small flock owners in the Primary Control Zone will require CFIA permits to move birds and poultry products (including eggs).

I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

today’sdrive 20 Acura RLX 15A

Your journey starts here.

Sport Hybrid A technology achievement

BY DAVID CHAO

Acura has just released its most powerful and technologically advanced car ever built in a form of a full-size luxury sedan. Although the Acura RLX was just introduced last year and the standard model remains largely unchanged, the range-topping RLX Sport Hybrid joins Acura’s flagship line-up as a true benchmark model. In the luxury sedan market, Acura tends to go unnoticed, particularly in the upper end of the spectrum. But customers who seek something different than your neighbour’s BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 or Cadillac CTS will find a lot to like in the RLX

Design

The most exciting new feature of the RLX Sport Hybrid is its powertrain. This new hybrid system is similar to the one that will power the soon to be introduced, highly anticipated Acura NSX. On the surface, the RLX Sport Hybrid appears a lot like the standard luxury sedan. To set it apart, the grille has a dark chrome finish and “hybrid” badges adorn the front fenders. Also, Acura’s Jewel Eye LED headlights are standard and both the fog lights and turn signals are also LEDs. The interior is also similar to the base model. However, the RLX Sport Hybrid is available with unique material finishes such as the exclusive chestnut wood grain trim.

Performance

The RLX Sport Hybrid’s key selling point is Acura’s claim that it is the most powerful car built by this brand - ever.

Acura worked to ensure the system works seamlessly; the mechanical and electric power is constantly monitored and distributed to different wheels when they need it.

selector, however, as it was not intuitive and it felt odd every time I shifted from park to drive, or drive to reverse.

The RLX Sport Hybrid comes standard with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and the system is calibrated to automatically bias the power to the outer wheels around a corner. This results in less understeer and more direct steering. Not only will the AWD system meter out power but it will also brake the inside wheel if needed. While braking, the hybrid system will regenerate some energy as well, though ulike some other hybrids, the regenerative braking is very smooth and the pedal feels completely natural. The RLX Sport Hybrid certainly lives up to its name and provides a surprisingly pleasant driving experience, but it’s also fuel efficient. Acura claims it is capable of V8like acceleration with a fuel economy of a four-cylinder engine vehicle. Like other contemporary hybrid vehicles, the RLX Sport Hybrid is able to run in pure electric mode. And to make this Acura as efficient as possible, start stop technology is standard.

Environment

Moving inside, the RLX Sport Hybrid is much more familiar. The cabin is welcoming with its standard leather seating surfaces; the front seats are comfortable and supportive and are both heated and cooled.

Other controls found in the centre stack are operated through Acura’s twin screen interface. The top screen displays navigation and audio information and is controlled by the central mouse or voice command. The lower touchscreen controls the radio and a row of buttons below it adjust the temperature. While I can see the logical reason for doing this, it took a while to get used to having two screens that displayed different information. In some ways, I feel that Acura has made the whole system more complex than necessary.

Features

The RLX Sport Hybrid is the top-of-the-range model with prices starting at $72,164. Being the top model, it comes fully loaded with all available features as standard. Notable features include automatic climate control, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, auto dimming rearview mirrors, surround view camera system, forward collision warning system, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) are 6.8 city, 6.3 highway for 6.5 combined.

Thumbs Up

The hybrid system seems complicated but it operates smoothly and is virtually undetectable to the driver. The driving experience is superb.

Under the hood is the same 3.5-litre V6 found in the standard RLX. Output is rated at 310 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. But that’s where the similarities end. Mated to the V6 is a new seven-speed dual clutch transmission with an integrated 35-kilowatt electric motor.

The rear seats are equally as comfortable and provide adequate legroom. Rear side window sunshades are standard to make the ride as pleasant as possible.

The RLX Sport Hybrid doesn’t “look upscale” nor does it look more expensive than the cheaper TLX model.

And Acura didn’t stop there. Two additional 27-kilowatt electric motors are mounted in the rear wheels. The three electric motors boost horsepower to 337 and torque to 377 lb-ft.

The redesigned centre console houses the new electronic gear selector. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are also present to change gears when in manual mode. I was frustrated with the new electronic gear

The Bottom Line The 2015 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid is a cutting-edge luxury sedan that provides superb ride and excellent road manners.
