If you are a serious golfer or one just starting, there is something special here for you. For those who enjoy a challenge, you can take advantage of one of our six championship golf courses in Pitt Meadows alone. The only thing similar about them is they all offer spectacular views of the area. We also have three separate executive-style courses for those that prefer a shorter outing. With five separate ice sheets, three all-purpose fields, dozens of baseball diamonds, numerous soccer pitches and two leisure centres, and one indoor swimming pool you and your children will never be bored. Add to these facilities some of the largest, vibrant and active minor sports organizations in the province and you have a near perfect situation for your kids. You will be absolutely stunned by the number and calibre of athletes that have been recognized on the “world stage” who grew up in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

I invite you to look to us to find what’s happening and where to go on a regular basis in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The TIMES is the best place for all community news, events, and information. Our staff members are proud members of our community. Our employees are contributors to improving our image and lifestyle. They care about what they do. We’re delivered twice weekly, Tuesdays and Thursdays, to each doorstep. You can catch us on the web, be our friends on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter on a daily basis. We’re proud of our reputation to be first with everything that matters to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and our citizenry. We’re really glad you are here!

elcome and congratulations on becoming one of our newest members of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. We welcome you to both communities, because the connection between them is not just geographical. The ties are much deeper and include the school district, parks and recreation, the arts council and every minor sports association. It is reflected in our Chamber of Commerce as well. I’m very pleased and proud to tell everyone that Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows has been mine and my family’s home for 32 years. It is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. There are few areas that offer the diversity of nature, culture, and recreaSpence Levan tion on the scale you will discover here. Publisher Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES Our abundance of parks, trails, lakes, rivers, streams, and mountain terrain will astound you. It just doesn’t feel like we are part of a big metropolitan area. You can walk the dikes along the Alouette and Pitt rivers in the fall and see the many salmon spawning. Wildlife is abundant everywhere. You can enjoy our parks on the Fraser River and Kanaka Creek. If more adventurous, you can take the trails in Golden Ears Provincial Park that lead to the peak of Golden Ears mountain and be amazed at the fantastic views of the entire Fraser River valley. We also boast the most and best trails to ride horses in the entire Metro Vancouver area, as well.

Our local “Hometown Heroes” program is a truly impressive collection of stars in almost every sport imaginable. There are so many festivals and community events that your calendar could be completely filled without crossing our bridges each weekend of the year. You will enjoy various shows at our theatre, The ACT, by many well-known musicians and performers alike. We even have a farmers market! This special edition of the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES will show you many of our businesses and services that want to welcome you here, as well. We have an exciting and growing mix of establishments to see to your every want and need. From dining to shopping, we have it all. Most impressive, however, is our collection of some of the finest and hardest working volunteers in the country. It seems that most people here want to “give rather than receive.”

The TIMES family is eager to serve the community.

The TIMES is delivered to 29,950 homes and businesses every Tuesday and Thursday, and is available online 24/7 at www.mrtimes.com

Let Us introduce You to our Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows Team...

Our service was inspired by the frontier settlers and their Conestogas, greeting new pioneer families on the prairies. We revived this tradition in Canada in 1930 with our first representative and her basket. Welcome Wagon is now Canada’s largest and most respected greeting service operating from coast to coast in every province and the Territories.

Diane, Carle, Sandy, Kay, Sheila, Margot

More than 1300 Welcome Wagon representatives greet approximately 500,000 families a year. They may have: moved to a new home, be expecting or have a new baby, or planning a wedding. Welcome Wagon provides personalized promotion and public relations for local participating businesses. After presenting a welcoming gift from each business represented, Welcome Wagon describes its location, hours, services and other pertinent information. We present printed invitations as well for the family to visit each business personally and receive a second gift there.

Any & everyone eligible for a Welcome Wagon visit is encouraged to request it through the local Welcome Wagon number, as is any business wishing to participate in one or more of Welcome Wagon services, and equally so, anyone interested in becoming a Welcome Wagon representative. The service, found on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as YouTube, gives newcomers a looking glass into both the Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge communities. “We distribute civic information, including the mayor’s letter,” said Kay Thomas, a longtime representative of Welcome Wagon. “We distribute all of these things to those who have recently moved here.” The organization also offers a variety of other services. “Numerous local businesses provide us with gifts and invitations,” Thomas said. New residents who are expecting, or even new local parents, can take part in the Welcome Wagon Baby Shower. The showers feature guest speakers and those in attendance receive a complimentary gift bag.

There are also hospital and inhome baby programs. For the new bride, Welcome Wagon hosts two bridal showcases, one in the spring and one in the fall that gives brides the opportunity to mingle with local area businesses to help with planning their weddings. Admission is free and visitors have a chance to win a honeymoon. New residents aged 50 and older who are looking to retire

Welcome Wagon has been in operation since 1930 and is Canadian owned and operated. For more information about this local organization, visit www.welcomewagon.ca, or call Kay Thomas at 604-463-9376.

even more residents into the areas in the near future, which will push up property values and rents, and so increase financial incentives for development. “Both communities have been hampered by poor transportation infrastructure for decades, detracting people from moving to the area, and keeping real estate prices low,” said Don R. Campbell, a senior analyst at REIN and one of the report’s authors. “The completion of the Golden Ears Bridge between Langley and Maple Ridge in 2009 and the opening of the

new Port Mann Bridge in 2012 has brought the one-time sleepy Fraser Valley farming communities closer to Vancouver. Real estate prices remain relatively low… for now.” He added, “As more people begin to realize what these two growing communities have to offer, demand will increase and prices will rise. Savvy real estate investors have begun to see the long-term growth potential of both communities.” According to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, the residential benchmark price for houses in Greater Vancouver, including Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge was more than $600,000 in August 2013. But there are lower cost options available. One of the newest developments in Maple Ridge is 223 North, a five-storey condo building right downtown. Prices start at less than $150,000. For those who need a helping hand to find suitable housing, the Alouette Home Start Society, at #101-22207 Brown Ave., offers supportive services through its various programs. The Iron Horse Youth Safe House, Route 29: The Road Home, Community Outreach, and Alouette Heights Supportive Housing are all designed to help those in need get back on their feet by providing support and a safe place to live. or the third year in a row, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have tied for second place on the Real Estate Investment Network (REIN) list of top investment communities in B.C. The 2013 edition of REIN’s Top B.C. Investment Towns report analyzes current and future prospects for real estate investment opportunities in the province over the next decade. REIN notes that, with 65 per cent of Maple Ridge residents commuting to other regions for work, no area in B.C. will be impacted more significantly by the completion of Gateway Program. When the six-lane Golden Ears Bridge officially opened to traffic in 2009, it provided the first direct route from the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to Langley and Surrey. That transportation improvement also provided Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows with a direct link to Highway 1, and reduced significantly the time it takes to travel to Vancouver and the surrounding region. Populations in both communities are already beginning to experience rapid growth.

Between 2006 and 2011, the District of Maple Ridge recorded a population growth of 10.3 per cent, while Pitt Meadows witnessed a population increase of 13.5 per cent. That puts both communities significantly above the provincial average of seven per cent during the same period. REIN predicts that the region’s affordability, in conjunction with the new transportation changes, will drive

etting to and from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge can be fairly stress free with a number of commuting options available. For those making the commute to the downtown Vancouver area, hopping aboard the West Coast Express might be a good choice. The trains operate from Monday to Friday, departing every 20 to 25 minutes during peak hours. There is no service on weekends and statutory holidays, though. Every day, 11,000 commuters use the five WCE trains. The trains also have work stations, washrooms, a cappuccino service and bicycle racks for cyclists. The Golden Ears Bridge is one option for commuters heading to the office by car. Drivers have to pay a toll, with rates ranging from $3 for registered vehicles with transponders, to $4.25 for unregistered, pay-as-you-go. Truck traffic pays more and rates vary depending on the size. For more information visit www.translink.ca. That’s also where people will find a trip planner for using public transit. TransLink provides regular buses to and from local area malls, which also connect with the Coquitlam Skytrain station, where service extends across the Lower Mainland and to the Vancouver International Airport.

Those looking to take to the skies can find air service available from both the Pitt Meadows Regional Airport and the Abbotsford International Airport. The Pitt Meadows Regional Airport is the third busiest in the Lower Mainland and 15th busiest in Canada, with 110,346 aircraft movements recorded in 2011. Opened in 1963, this airport is the only one in the Fraser Valley that’s located on the Fraser River’s north side. The airport is at #100-11465 Baynes Rd., 2.5 kilometres east of the junction of the Pitt and Fraser Rivers. It consists of one 1,310metre and two 762-metre paved runways and a staffed control tower. It is home-base for three major rotary wing operations, provides a float plane dock and ramp, and serves about 225 locally based float and regular aircraft. Businesses at the airport offer a variety of both aviation and non-aviation services. For information about the facility, people can call 604-465-8977. Another great way to learn about the facility is to visit on Airport Day. The airport allows the public to learn about its inner workings since it’s both an airport and the home base for various flight training schools. The annual summertime event features lots for kids of all ages including free flights for children and discounted ones for adults. The Abbotsford airport includes both Canadian and international flights, including American and Caribbean destinations.

The society was founded in 1980 by Edna Trethewey, a former public health nurse who realized the need for help for dying patients and their families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Today, the registered non-profit society has a volunteer board of directors, nine paid staff members and more than 120 volunteers involved in board activities, visiting, grief support, general assist-

ance, and the thrift store. With the Fraser Health Authority as a partner, the society secured 10 palliative care beds in a facility adjacent to Ridge Meadows Hospital. The McKenney Creek hospice residence opened in October 2006. The society is funded through grants, memberships, donations, and bequests.

RMH auxiliary

The auxiliary is celebrating its 60th year and recently marked the opening of a Golden Ears Gift Shop, located near the hospital entrance, with a ribbon cutting and celebration.

The 96-member auxiliary sponsors the VolunTEEN Program (previously known as Candystripers), the hospital’s patient resource room, which provides emergency supplies to patients in need, and provides funding for minor equipment, focused on patient comfort at RMH. Through proceeds from the Golden Ears Gift Shop and the Economy Cottage thrift store on Dewdney Trunk Road, the auxiliary has raised $70,000 this year. In 2012, the group raised $98,000, and in 2011, $119,000. This year, they partnered with Fraser Health to contribute $150,000 towards the gift shop.

RMH foundation

Incorporated in 1985, the foundation has raised more than $22.5 million for health-care equipment, education, and research for Ridge Meadows Hospital as well as Baillie House residential care, Gardenview Pavilion, McKenney Creek Hospice, home and community health, health promotions and prevention, and mental health and addiction services departments in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The foundation is a non-profit registered charity investing in better health through community partnerships. • More at www.mrtimes.com, search “foundation”

Centres accommodate active lifestyles for retirees Programs promote healthy living – and having fun – in retirement. by Anne Watson editorial@mrtimes.com

T

he Pitt Meadows Seniors Centre, opened in February 2013, offers a variety of activities, from Hawaiian and line dancing to tai chi and fitness classes, German and Spanish lessons to partners bridge and cribbage and crafts. And more programs are set to come, said facilities coordinator Kathie Rodway. The new centre offers daily drop-in programs that include Scrabble, snooker, Mah Jong, and chair yoga, Rodway said. She invited anyone who is interested to take a tour of the facility.

“They are welcome any time,” said Rodway, adding, “We are also looking for volunteers for different programs.” The centre, located at 19065 119B Ave., is open Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Across town in Maple Ridge, the longstanding Ridge Meadows Seniors Activity Centre offers a beauty parlour, pool room, workshop, lounge, and activity rooms for cards, crafts, and meetings. The centre’s banquet hall has a stage for performances and and room for carpet bowling, table tennis, and games. Those who have a membership at the Maple Ridge centre can also use it to access programs at Pitt Meadows, said Rodway, and vice versa. The Ridge Meadows Seniors Society publishes a monthly newsletter called Grapevine, which highlights programs and activities in the Pitt Meadows and Maple

Ridge area. The non-profit organization promotes health and well-being for those aged 55 and older, and helps run both the Ridge Meadows and Pitt Meadows centres. There is a membership fee to join. A hot meal is provided on a daily basis, and members can take advantage of the various outings and events organized by the society. Seniors are invited to drop in to check out the various activities.

For more information visit www.rmssseniors.org. Willow Senior Living Residence, Greystone Manor, and Sunwood Senior Living Community are just a few of the retirement communities located in the area, each with its own calendars of events and activities.

Listings of recreational and health services available for seniors in the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows area can be found online at www.mrtimes.com.

Animal welfare

Furry friends not forgotten

Adoptable pets can be found in many local shelters. by Anne Watson editorial@mrtimes.com

T

hose looking to adopt a furry companion have a variety of options to choose from in the local area. And if the unthinkable happens and you find you are unable to care for an animal, animal welfare groups are there to help. Unfortunately in this day and age, many people still think they can abandon a pet and it will survive on its own. That’s not the case. The BC SPCA Maple Ridge adopts out animals of all shapes, sizes, and breeds. According to its website, the branch is one of the busiest in the province, and in 2012 alone, the shelter cared for more than 1,200 animals. The roughly 6,500-squarefoot facility was named Canada’s first gold level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) animal shelter this past summer.

Katie’s Place Animal Shelter is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization that has been in operation since 2001. The shelter mostly takes in cats and can house up to 125 of the furry felines. For more information, visit katiesplaceshelter.com.

Pitt Polder’s farming succeeds thanks to Dutch expertise There were many failed attempts to hold back Pitt Meadows floodwaters.

“Until Jan Blom and the Pitt Polder Corp. arrived, it was a losing battle.” According to Pitt Polder: Legends & Dreams by Sandy Macdougall, diking in the area began already in the 1880s after the 17,000 acres of land was bought by three by Maria Rantanen businessmen for $5.75 per acre. mrantanen@mrtimes.com Much of the land in north Pitt Meadows utch immigrants who settled was held by speculators and not farmers in in north Pitt Meadows can be the late 1800s. credited for reclaiming the land The three businessmen wanted to reclaim making possible the thousands of the land, but this meant building miles of acres of fertile farmland in the area. dikes to keep back flood waters. 1904, its debt was at $220,000. Throughout the early part of the 20th century, settlers came, most notably the Mennonites, and tried farming the area, but with the constant flooding, many failed. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the Dutch came and starting building the dikes so they would last. Dr. Jan Blom visited the area in the spring of 1949 when it was still underwater – but he saw the potential of the land despite perennial flooding. Blom went to Holland to get funding to buy property in Pitt Meadows for about $6 per acre and in 1951, a Dutch engineer, Nico Biezeveld, came to Pitt Meadows and estimated it would cost about $300,000 to reclaim the land. In the end, while he knew how to dike the area, his estimate was one-tenth of what it would eventually cost, according to Pitt Polder: Legends & Dreams.

Work began in July 1951, first with repairing the existing dike, which was damaged from the flood of 1948. The pumphouse in place was able to pump 20,000 gallons of water per minute, but Biezeveld said this was just a quarter of the capacity needed. Two 40,000-gallon-per-minute pumps were brought from Holland in 1952 and were installed in a concrete structure. This first pump station was named Biezeveld. For more information about the history of Pitt Polder, people can view a copy of this Maple Ridge writer’s book at the library.

For the more adventuresome, playing in this community’s treetops might appeal. Wildplay Maple Ridge, located at 23485 Fern Cres., offers zip-line fun for the whole family. For those with more of an arts-and-culture bent, there’s lots to enjoy on that front as well. Folks can pick from a plethora of community festivals and outdoor music events during the summer months, or visit the museums and historic sites, galleries, and multi-purpose arts centre located in the heart of Maple Ridge’s downtown. “Whatever you choose to do, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are a great place to fulfill your sense of adventure and most importantly, have fun,” Gervais said. Agri-tourism is a huge – and always growing – component of this town’s tourism portfolio. There is an abundance of farmgate operations as well as the always popular Haney Farmers Market (held primarily through the summer months). And if anyone is interested in digging a little deeper, the Circle Farm Tour is ideal. It’s a selfguided, self-drive tour of farms and independently owned and operated businesses that bring fresh, local produce and products to market.

Tourism Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows has a complete community calendar of events and also offers people the option to sign up for a weekly listing of upcoming events. Stop into the visitor centre, located at 12492 Harris Rd. in Pitt Meadows. It’s open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (September through July) or seven days a week in July and August, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and counsellors would be thrilled to share free maps, community guides, tour suggestions, and other information on this community. he safety of the community comes first, but for first responders in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, that means more than just dealing quickly and efficiently with emergencies. Full community involvement is an important aspect of all branches of local emergency service providers.

Fire response

Three strategically located fire halls under fire chief Dane Spence keep Maple Ridge’s more than 100 on-call and full-time firefighters close to any potential action. The administration hall at 22708 Brown Ave. covers the core of the District, Hall 2 serves the east sector of the community from 27501 112th Ave., and Hall 3 handles the west sector from 11777 203rd St.

A fourth hall is planned in Kanaka Creek in a few years. The District fire department is also involved with the Community Wildfire Protection Plan, as well as the Arson Prevention Program for Children, and a host of other prevention strategies. The Pitt Meadows Fire and Rescue Services, with fire chief Don Jolley at the helm, operates out of a firehall capable of holding six vehicles, including a ladder truck. The department’s three fulltime firefighters are supported by more than 30 volunteers. “Every year we go through a recruiting process,” said Jolley, with emphasis on candidates’ life experience, roots in the community, whether working or living here, and those willing to commit to at least three to five years.

Agriculture

Founded on farming, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows continue to expand their roots to keep thriving. by Ronda Payne editorial@mrtimes.com

C

ertainly every community has roots deep in agriculture, but not every community encourages the continuous growth of those roots into flourishing agricultural activities. From agri-tourism to unique products, and a farmers market, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have a thriving agricultural community. Families like the Hopcotts, who have been farming in the region since the 1930s, are still going strong. By making use of the land for beef, cranberries, a popular corn maze, and even a farmgate market, the Hopcotts are continuing their love of farming by find-

ing ways to share what they do. Other local success stories include Matt and Deanna Laity who run Brookfield Dairy Farm (run by the Laity family since 1879), the Haney Farmers Market which runs on Saturdays from May to November with a wide range of local produce, food, and handcrafted items, and the Blue Heron Fruit Winery run by the Flynn family, that have farmed berries for 50-plus years. All of these operations value the longevity of farming and want to see current and future generations celebrate it. Agriculture is so well established in the area, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows developed the True North Fraser brand – in conjunction with Mission – to encourage recognition of the area’s contribution to the sector. Similar to “California Strawberries” or “Okanagan Wines,” the True North Fraser

brand is meant to conjure up associations with diverse, unparalleled, agricultural practices. “We’re always proud of what we do,” noted Debbie Hopcott at the True North Fraser brand launch. “It’s food and it’s important to everyone.” Agriculture encompasses 11,800 hectares of the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Mission region included in the True North Fraser initiative. To encourage residents and visitors alike to take in the agricultural activities in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, activities like View Circle Farm Tours are encouraged. more This do-it-yourself tour invites visitors photos to a variety of local operations by use with of a printed map. Whether it’s dairy production, growing pumpkins, or or online cheesemaking, there is something for everyone on the tour. Drive the back (and some main) roads of the community and see the diversity agriculture offers to the region.
