Victoria Turley made the call at 6 a.m. on July 26, 2008, after ﬁnding 16-year-old Shannon Raymond unconscious in her former home on

Candlelight vigil for teens killed in crash Funerals for Crystal Weaver and Dawson Spencer held on the weekend by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter

Hundreds of people, mostly teenagers, gathered at a candlelight vigil for Crystal Weaver and Dawson Spencer at Dewdney Trunk Road and Dunbar Street in downtown Maple Ridge on Thursday.

Friends sang Happy Birthday on Thursday evening to Crystal Weaver, who was killed in a head-on collision Sunday, four days before she would have turned 19. Hundreds gathered at the corner of Dewdney Trunk Road and Dunbar Street in downtown Maple Ridge at a candlelight vigil for Weaver and Dawson Spencer. Spencer, 17, was driving the a van that police say crossed the centre line and crashed headon into a Honda Civic, in which Weaver was a passenger. The two boys who were passengers in Spencer’s van, and his classmates at Samuel Robertson Technical School, were injured in the crash. One still remains in hospital. The driver of the Honda also remains in hospital with compound fractures to both her femurs, while a second passenger in the car has since been released. All three girls were friends who graduated from Garibaldi secondary last year. Investigators say the van was likely speeding, and alcohol is being considered a factor in the crash, but it could be months before toxicology reports will be able to confirm it.

Police have not yet confirmed whether or not Spencer consumed alcohol prior to the crash. However, neither he nor the driver of the Honda should not have been on the road Sunday. RCMP say Spencer had an ‘L’ licence, while Jessica Smalls, who was driving the Honda, had an ‘N.’ Anne Sagorski lived nearby and heard the crash. She showed up to the vigil show respect for the families. “It’s hard for the young people to lose their friends that way.”

Initially charged with producing and distributing child pornography, the boy pleaded guilty in December to the lesser charge of distributing obscene material. Police allege the teenage girl was sexually assaulted at “Another Night in Bangkok,” a party held on a farm at 12993 Harris Rd. on Sept. 10, 2010. The teen, who was 17 at the time, admitted he took

photographs and a video on his Blackberry of what he thought was consensual sex and sent it to others. He told the court he took the photographs because he thought his friends would never believe what he had seen. The images were eventually posted by others on the social-networking site Facebook and repeatedly shared online, prompting RCMP to make a public appeal to stop their distribution. Now 18, the young man is currently in university, pursuing studies in commerce and business administration. “By all accounts, he is

intelligent and capable and there is no reason to expect he will fall short of achieving the goals he has set for his life,” said Judge De Couto, noting the teen had matured and shown remorse for the crime. The teen has four months to complete the 1,500 word essay and must return to court later this year for a performance review. “I expect a real essay,” said Judge De Couto, while looking sternly at the teen. “You are intelligent and capable and I expect a proper university level essay.” Outside court, the teenage girl’s father expressed his disappointment with

the sentence. “Out of all of the charges laid, this was the most damaging. It did not allow my daughter the privacy and the time to heal,” he said. “If he is so remorseful, as the judge thinks he is, why didn’t he get up and why didn’t he want to face us and say he is sorry? To me, that would have gone a long way.” The young girl missed a year of school following the incident. She is currently studying at home and hopes to graduate with her peers. The teenage boy was the ﬁrst of three people to face charges following the rave.

Breach charge laid against Pitt rave accused A man charged with distributing pornographic photographs of an alleged sexual assault of teenage girl at a Pitt Meadows rave has breached his bail conditions for the second time since November. Dennis John Allen Warrington appeared in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court on Monday on two counts of breaching a recognizance. Ridge Meadows RCMP allege Warrington violated a condition, which prohibited him from consuming alcohol following an incident on Feb. 6. This is the second time Warrington has been charged with a breach. He was charged with a similar violation in November. The 20-year-old was charged last year with making child pornography, and intending to distribute it. Police allege the teenage girl was sexually assaulted at “Another Night in Bangkok,” a party held on a farm at 12993 Harris Rd. on Sept. 10, 2010. A 16-year-old boy took photographs of the alleged assault and sent them to friends who then posted the images on Facebook, where they were repeatedly shared online. Warrington’s bail conditions included a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven days a week.

‘TransLink, open your books’ by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters is backing Surrey Mayor Diane Watts in calling for a full audit on TransLink before any increase to the transit levy is dumped on homeowners. “I agree. I want to see an audit done,” said Walters. “We want to see where the money’s going.” The Mayors Council on Regional Transportation last month renewed its initial demand last fall for an audit of TransLink, either through B.C.’s Auditor General or the new Auditor General of Local Government. Walters would also like to review putting more tolls on bridges and roads. Currently, only Golden Ears Bridge has tolls, as will the Port Mann Bridge when it’s completed later this year. Tolls shouldn’t have been removed from the Coquihalla Highway, she said, and that they should have been added to the Sea to Sky Highway when upgraded. Maple Ridge Mayor Er-

nie Daykin was surprised at Watts’ demand. An average $23 increase to the levy kicks in 2013 as an interim measure until new funding sources, either more tolls or a vehicle levy, are approved. Daykin’s not sure what would be the impact of rejecting that increase and isn’t sure if he’d back Watts. If TransLink’s supplemental plan gets blocked, Maple Ridge could lose the $900,000 annually it gets for major road construction as well as a commitment to pay for half of a portion of the widening of Abernethy Way. He pointed out that TransLink went through an audit a few years ago, which resulted in layoffs of senior staff. A two-cent increase in the TransLink’s gas tax takes effect in April, but that will generate only about half of what’s required in its budget plan. But Watts refuses to be part of that debate until an audit proceeds – something the provincial government has so far blocked. Daykin said he’d also

consider more widespread tolls on roads and bridges, and that there’s been discussions about tolling all the bridges in Metro Vancouver. A vehicle levy and more provincial money should also be considered, he added. He pointed out people in Abbotsford don’t pay anything into TransLink, yet use its roads and account for 30 per cent of the passenger load on the West Coast Express. Perhaps a vehicle levy could be scaled by region, according to the level of service in each area. According to TransLink’s 2012 business plan, toll revenues for the Golden Ears Bridge are paying for only half the operating costs of the $808-million bridge opened in June 2009. The budget for 2012 calls for toll revenues of $39 million while ﬁnancing costs, payments to the bridge builder, payments to the toll operator and maintenance costs came to $80 million. As result, TransLink will be pouring in an additional $41 million in 2012 for the bridge costs.

Health-care realities Hospitals in the Fraser Health region are chronically overcrowded. Patients regularly are parked in hallways and emergency wards – sometimes for days. Those uncomfortable – and sometimes risky – realities will be the focus of a panel of external experts who will examine hospital congestion and make recommendations. It isn’t likely this group will uncover major solutions that haven’t already been identified and implemented. A number of progressive initiatives to deal with hospital congestion have been recently undertaken by Fraser Health, including payfor-performance funding to reward hospitals for increasing efficiency, and a push for patient home support rather than hospital stays. Yet, despite those efforts, emergency visits are up 7.3 per cent so far this year and patient days spent in hospitals in the region are up five per cent. Clearly, demand is outstripping facilities and resources. And the pressure is going to continue to rise, as Fraser Health estimates it will gain another 327,000 residents, or 20 per cent more, by 2020. Meanwhile, the population of seniors over age 65 is forecast to balloon 50 per cent by 2020 to more than 100,000. The “quick” solution is to build more hospital capacity. However, that requires vast sums of money – from a cash-strapped government already running deficit budgets and facing increasing debt, in a less than dynamic economic climate. The armchair quarterbacks will lob off criticisms anchored in hindsight, and vague “stop wasting money” bromides, which of course don’t address the specifics, nor the billions of dollars required for expanded hospital infrastructure, and the professionals required to staff it. Make no mistake, hospital overcrowding is only one aspect of B.C’s overall health care challenge, which currently gobbles $18 billion, or more than 40 per cent of the entire provincial budget. As this new panel of experts will confirm, there are no easy answers to the present model of health care delivery, which increasingly appears to be unsustainable. It’s time to get real with a national step toward expanded forms of fee-for-service. – Black Press

We are floating on a sea of gas VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark’s recent fanfare about developing a natural gas export industry in northern B.C. included a major change in electricity policy. Last year, Clark’s government forced B.C. Hydro to trim B.C. Views its operations and keep its next two an- Tom Fletcher nual rate increases below four per cent. Part of the savings will come from redefining former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate strategy, which required B.C. Hydro to be self-sufficient in even low-water years, with no net electricity imports. The target is now self-sufficiency in average-water years, limiting expansion of independent power projects. It also means B.C. will import more gasfired electricity in the coming years, and burn some of its own abundant gas to generate new power up north. North America finds itself floating on a sea of shale gas. Campbell’s plan entailed using B.C.’s big dams to stabilize and store power from new intermittent sources of hydro and wind, building the Site C dam on the Peace River and exporting clean energy at a premium in a carbonpriced North American market. Both the carbon market and the export market have evaporated. While B.C. was developing run-of-river to sell to California, the U.S. west coast built

new capacity, much of it gas fired, after an electricity crisis that caused brownouts more than a decade ago. Today, Washington state producers are actually paying B.C. Hydro to take their excess power because they need to move it into the grid, and B.C. is the only place that can store it using dam capacity. NDP energy critic John Horgan is celebrating this change in B.C. Hydro policy. He says the government made a multi-billion-dollar miscalculation by assuming California’s electricity shortage would continue indefinitely, and surplus power would be profitable. He says independent power contracts are part of B.C. Hydro’s current financial problems, but political interference in planning is the bigger issue. Horgan would not endorse the Wilderness Committee’s call to cancel electricity purchase contracts B.C. Hydro has signed for more run-of-river developments. Additional projects are planned for the Upper Lillooet, Upper Toba and Harrison Rivers in southern B.C., and the Kokish River on northern Vancouver Island. Most are aboriginal partnerships. Energy Minister Rich Coleman told me no contracts will be cancelled, and he rejected my suggestion that B.C. Hydro could end up with too much power in the wrong places and at the wrong time of year. B.C. Hydro can move power around as well as store it, and that ability will improve when the smart grid is completed. Independent power doesn’t end there. It shifts to northern B.C., where three liquefied natural gas projects will need

output equivalent to two and a half Site C dams to operate. Coleman confirmed that at least one modern gas-fired power plant will be needed to develop LNG, which is expected to be in business before Site C could be built. That powerhouse will likely be built by the LNG developers, and used to back up new intermittent sources of offshore and land-based wind and any river or geothermal sites available along a new northwest power line.

Coleman says that plant should be able to capture carbon dioxide and sequester it deep underground. Fort Nelson and points north will remain off the BC Hydro grid. Even with carbon capture in the northeast, Campbell’s greenhouse gas targets look to be the next part of his legacy to be abandoned.

I find it appalling that some Lower Mainland mayors would favor tolling existing bridges to fund TransLink. Is it fair to charge people a fee because they have the misfortune to have to cross a waterway everyday to go to work and back? This could affect several members of one household and become a real financial burden. It would be particularly difficult for residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows as they are bound by two rivers. We were only area in the Lower Mainland that had to put up with the inconvenience of a swing bridge for decades, To toll the new Pitt River bridge would be an insult to us all. This is particularly so because the new bridge received $90 million from the federal government to build it. The other $108 million came from the provincial government. Nothing came from TransLink, which offers little in the way of service to us and probably never will. If this seemingly mismanaged entity requires more money, it should get it by some other means rather than tolling our lifeline heading west. PETER HARRIS MAPLE RIDGE

Historically churches have earned statutory property tax exemptions because they ﬁlled social needs in our communities. According to a Maple Ridge municipal annual report, those exemptions totalled more than $140,000 in 2010. There is no note or mention of what, if any, services these churches provide to the community in return

for the property tax exemptions. In addition to the property tax exemptions, many churches increase their revenues through leases for non-church activities, such as daycare and pre-school programs. At least one church also operates a bingo game in a tax-exempt facility in direct competition with the Bingoplex and any other commercial establishments that pay

high property taxes and are granted no exemptions. I think it is ﬁtting that any organization or church which enjoys the largesse of Maple Ridge taxpayers should be required to justify their exemptions by providing a detailed public explanation of the value of the services they provide the community. We have homeless people suffering through extreme weather conditions with lit-

tle help from municipal hall or most of the churches in town. It should be feasible for the churches and municipal ofﬁcials to devise an emergency shelter program. That would go a long way towards justifying property tax exemptions that are a holdover to those times when churches took their social responsibilities seriously. SANDY MACDOUGALL MAPLE RIDGE

Bike helmet may not save my body EDITOR, THE NEWS:

Re: What does bike helmet bylaw really do? (Cycling, Feb. 10). I read Jackie Chow’s article with a great deal of amusement at her lack of knowledge. My mother is Dutch, and I have spent a lot of time in Holland. It is a country that covers only 2.5 times the land area of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, with a population more than six times what we have here, or half of Canada’s population. Furthermore, the change in altitude from Maple Ridge municipal hall to Port Ham-

mond is more than the greatest elevation change in all of Holland. They have a bicycle culture that pre-dates the ﬁrst white man’s house in this region, and have had mass transit (horse drawn) before the ﬁrst house was built in Quebec City. With all this, you are still less likely to be hit by a car, while riding your bicycle on an Amsterdam street than you are while walking across Lougheed Highway at a green light. We drive bigger cars, faster and with less attention than anybody over there. I would not dare to ride a bicycle here

without a signiﬁcant sense of imminent danger, and the knowledge that my helmet may not save my body from harm, but at least I am more likely to live to recover from my injuries than Ms. Chow will. I forgot to mention: my nine-year old cycles to Laity View along 216th Street every day that it is not actually raining when he leaves. It’s a distance that would cross most Dutch towns. Halas is spearheading the Keen to Green campaign, which aims to spruce up Maple Ridge secondary by planting a dozen or so red maples on school grounds along 122nd Avenue. Halas and his wife Anne both graduated from Maple Ridge Secondary School in 1977, and today his two children go there. The school has undergone many changes over the years, but since it was renovated in 2004,

there hasn’t been a lot of nature for students to enjoy, and Halas wants to change that. “The campus is very barren,” he says. “When you drive by the school, the predominant features seem to be pavement and fencing.” The trees were originally part of the school’s design, but construction cost overruns meant the trees were scrapped from the ﬁnal plan. “I’ve talked to the school district about paying for the trees, but they’ve told me there isn’t any money outside the classroom,” says Halas. Incorporating some nature into the school’s landscape will have a

positive beneﬁt for students, he says. “Greenery enhances the environment to make it more appealing,” says Halas. “Aesthetics are often a neglected aspect at schools, but it’s part of the learning environment.” With the Maple Ridge community becoming more urbanized, Halas said the trees will hopefully help students stay connected to nature. Most of the district’s other high schools have extensive greenery on their campuses, he notes. The trees provide shade for students and make the school more inviting place. “I have this dream of

The cost to plant the trees is $300 to $350 each, and Halas says he is about $1,000 shy of his fundraising goal. “We’re hoping to get them in the ground this spring,” he says.

‘Raymond needed help walking’ Trial from front “Nothing can prepare you for a 911 tape of people trying to breathe life back into your daughter,” Raymond said outside New Westminster Supreme Court when the trial broke for a lunch break. “My sister was vibrant, energetic and friendly,” said Shannon’s sister, Danielle Raymond, who was dressed in purple – Shannon’s favourite colour. Shannon took ecstasy during a birthday celebration held on a “party bus” the night before. She died from complications after consuming the club drug, a substance she had possibly tried for the ﬁrst time that night. Turley is not accused of supplying ecstasy to the teen. Crown prosecutor Jay Fogle expects to call 20 witnesses during the trial, which is expected to last two weeks. He said if Turley had called for an ambulance, Shannon would have likely survived. But Richard Cassia, a friend of Turley who was at her house on the night, indicated the teen was checked on by adults. He was summoned by Crown to testify. Turley was hosting her birthday party that evening, attended by eight to 12 adults. They had been drinking. Cassia described himself as “hammered.” He said he noticed Shannon arrive at the house after midnight on July 26 with Turley’s teenage son Spencer and two other girls. “She was intoxicated,” he told the court, noting that Shannon need help walking to the house. Shannon was later taken to a bedroom, where she was put on a futon, propped up by pillows and towels. Cassia said before he left Turley’s house around 3 a.m., he felt Shannon’s foot and hand to make sure she did not have a fever. He told the court he looked over at Shannon’s friends and said “make sure you take care of” her. Turley’s lawyer, David Milburn, asked Cassia if there was anything wrong that led him to believe an ambulance should be called. “You were of the view that this was a young person who drank to much?” said Milburn.

Drunk drivers taken off road Three drivers were taken off the road in Maple Ridge over the weekend after police caught them driving drunk. The first driver was stopped around 11 p.m. Friday after he made a left turn in front of a marked police car on Dewdney Trunk Road at 222nd Street. The man provided a breath sample into a roadside screening device, which showed as a ‘warn,’ meaning the man’s blood-alcohol level was between .06 per cent and .10 per cent. This resulted in an Immediate Roadside Prohibition for three days and the 47-year-old man from Maple Ridge had his car impounded for the same period. Just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, a car was seen being driven erratically on the Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. The car was stopped and police said the driver exhibited signs of being impaired by alcohol. Samples of the man’s breath showed he was twice the legal limit. The last driver was nabbed at a road check on Abernethy Way and 224th Street in Maple Ridge just before midnight on Saturday. The driver had breath samples analyzed at one and a half times the legal limit. “Ridge Meadows RCMP will be

out to enforce all traffic laws, with an emphasis on getting drinking drivers off our streets and highways. Our goal is to make our roads among the safest in the world,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. Police are recommending impaired driving charges against a 41-year-old Maple Ridge man and a 22-year-old man from Pitt Meadows, as well as issuing a three-day driving prohibition to a 47-year-old Maple Ridge man.

Break-in Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a break-in to a home on 209th Street in Maple Ridge. A thief forced open a basement window to the house between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. A laptop computer, X-Box gaming system, including a controller and headset, and six X-Box games were stolen.

Barcodes on the entire collection of 32,000 books and audio visual titles will be converted to RFID tags and the automated return will be located in the breezeway near the entrance to the new library. Due dates for all library books borrowed within the past month have already been adjusted to allow patrons to return their items after the new location opens.

The library will open again on Feb. 29 at its new location, the second ďŹ&#x201A;oor of the new Solaris development at the corner of Ford and Harris roads. Movers will be arriving on Monday, packing the books on trollyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and driving them to their new location â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 12,000 square feet, including a 12-station computer lab, expanded areas for youth and children. It will also be able to hold more books and other library materials.

No pet home is perfect Pets from p16 Their heartbreak is evident. You can see it in their eyes. Some get sick because the stress of losing their beloved family wreaks havoc on their immune system. We have a TLC list at Katie’s Place that shows all the cats who need to be watched closely because they are not adjusting well to a life at the shelter. Some have even lost their lives because no matter what we did, it just wasn’t enough to make up for their loss. The reasons people give up their animals are numerous and at times even justiﬁed. But before you part with your dog or cat, think about the reasons

you are making this choice. If you are worried that you spend too much time away from home, then consider that they would rather see you once a day than never again. If you worry that the home you live in is too small, and they need more room, then consider the that, at a shelter, they will either be in a small cage or sharing a relatively small area with several other animals. If you are worried that you just don’t have enough time to give them proper attention, then consider that, at a shelter, they will be one of hundreds and may not get any attention at all. It is important to understand that no home is perfect and not

Teachers ask province to have a heart by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Local teachers made their displeasure with the current state of contract talks known on Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day, as they pleaded with the province to â&#x20AC;&#x153;have a heart.â&#x20AC;? Teachers from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows hung more than 400 red paper hearts from the trees in front of School District No. 42â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ces in downtown Maple Ridge on Tuesday. Each heart contained a special message, spelling out how teaching and learning

could be improved if respect and value for the profession improved, and if better funding was in place. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would love it if I had basic resources, such as textbooks, for every student in my class,â&#x20AC;? said one of the hearts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would love to see special needs students get the daily support they need and deserve,â&#x20AC;? said another. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teachers love to teach, but we are no different than our colleagues around the province, in that we see the government needs to reinvest in teachers and

students,â&#x20AC;? said Maple Ridge Teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association president George Serra. Teachers across the province have been taking part in ongoing job action since September, when contract talks between the B.C. Teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Federation and the provinceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bargaining agent, the B.C. Public School Employersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association, broke down last summer. Teachers have been without a contract since June. Last week, education minister George Abbott appointed a senior bureaucrat to conduct a

two-week inquiry to determine if a negotiated contract is possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the fact-ďŹ nder determines that there is no prospect of agreement, then government would have to look at a legislated settlement in this matter,â&#x20AC;? Abbott said. The BCTF has proposed a three-year contract that would see teachers given a 15 per cent increase over that span. BCTF estimates the contract will cost an extra $300 million per year, however BCPSEA pegs that number at upwards of $500 million in the ďŹ rst year alone.

Dr. John Hopkins graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1949 and moved to Maple Ridge in 1950 after being hired by the Pitt Meadows Farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Institute. For a number of years, Hopkins was the only veterinarian between Mission and Burnaby, making him extremely busy. So busy, that he had to send most of his small animal cases out to Vancouver. Hopkinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife Hazel declared that, by 1956, they decided that â&#x20AC;&#x153;sending all these animals out to Vancouver was getting ridiculous.â&#x20AC;? Dr. Hopkins knew of veterinarian Dr. Pat Clarke, and approached him with a proposal to create a joint practice. Clarke grew up on a farm in Abbotsford, which meant that he was surrounded by furry family members from a young age. Impressed by a vet-

Clarke graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1954, and within a year took over a practice in Mission. Clarke worked with animals on both the Mission and Abbotsford side of the Mission Bridge. When the bridge went out, he lost half of his clients. Clarke then moved to Vancouver to work with a veterinarian there. Creating a joint practice â&#x20AC;&#x153;seemed like a good solution for both of us,â&#x20AC;? reďŹ&#x201A;ected Clarke. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lone

practice is tough as the doc is on call 24/7. We ran our practice from our homes in those days, so it truly was the centre of family life and took precedence over everything else ... So we plunged into the building of the ďŹ rst purposebuilt veterinary hospital in British Columbia.â&#x20AC;? The Maple Ridge Veterinary Hospital opened in August 1958. Located on Lougheed Highway between First and Second Avenues (now 203rd and 207th streets), the hospital included a waiting room with reception desk, dispensary, surgery, two examination rooms, a bathroom that doubled as an X-ray developing

area, a kennel room, the bathing and grooming area and a small apartment for a caretaker. Though difďŹ cult and frustrating at times, veterinary work was rewarding. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A collie had developed a nasty abscess over his eye,â&#x20AC;? Clarke explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It required lancing and draining and several weeks of aftercare. At each visit he would sit quietly while I tended the wound, which would have been painful. When I was ďŹ nished, he would solemnly lift his paw to shake my hand.â&#x20AC;? The practice became largely oriented around small animals because of the disappearance of farmland throughout the 1960s. Having a greater interest in large animals, Clarke left the practice in 1969 to serve as the district veterinarian in the east and west Kootenays. Dr. Dale Reynolds, who had been working at the practice, took over Clarkeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s patients. In 1971, Hopkins and Clarke sold the Maple Ridge Veterinary Hospital to Dr. Graham Lewis and Dr. Roger Kocheff. Hopkins retired from veterinary practice for all of a month, then returned to treating large animals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were back where we initially started,â&#x20AC;? Hazel Hopkins acknowledged with a chuckle. Dr. Hopkins never really retired from veterinary care. In 1986, he was still giving advice, referring people to veterinarians and dispensing medication. Though he passed away in 1987, people still remember the hard work and dedication of Dr. Hopkins. Sandra Borger is an archives researcher at Maple Ridge Museum.

High school musical will open next week despite a tragic car accident that injured two girls from the crew by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter

ressed in pink from head to toe, Zoey Moore has mastered the girlie giggle and catwalk sashay. As Elle Woods in the musical Legally Blonde, the 17-year-old admits there’s been a little adjusting to do. Firstly, Moore is a brunette. “I’ve just got to remember, blondes are the ones who like to have fun,” says Moore, a student at Garibaldi Secondary School. “I’m pretty much a dumb brunette,” she adds with a laugh. Based on the hit movie of the same name and starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde the Musical is an award-winning Broadway sensation created by a team, led by Tony Award-winning director and Olivier Awardnominated choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray). College sweetheart and homecoming queen Elle Woods doesn’t take no for an answer. So when her boyfriend Warner dumps her for someone serious, Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and heads for Harvard Law School. With some help from new-found friends Paulette, Emmett and her chihuahua Bruiser, she soon learns that it’s so much better to be smart. The show is filled with lots of shopping, laments about dreamy boys, an overload of pink, and a healthy dose of girl-power. “She’s not dumb. She’s smart in her own way,” says Moore, explaining Elle isn’t the ditzy blonde people think she is at first glance. “She’s not scientific smart. She’s good at other things like – fashion.” There are 18 songs in the show and Elle sings 16 of them, as well as having several costume changes. Moore realizes the show relies on a top-notch performance from her, but is taking it all in stride. Now in Grade 11, Moore has 10

She says character study and past roles have prepared her. It also handy she’s now grown fond of Elle’s favourite colour. “I’ve come to like the colour pink a lot,” Moore says with a laugh. “It wasn’t my colour before. It’s feminine. It’s fun. And I am the only one allowed to wear pink.” With a cast of 55 and a live band, staging Legally Blonde is quite a feat for Garibaldi. The school is the ﬁrst in Canada to stage

the Broadway musical and drama teacher Cyndy Lacroix was warned against producing it. “New York told me – it’s too hard, it’s got animals,” Lacroix says in the midst of a rehearsal. In addition to a chihuahua and a boxer, Legally Blonde has several roll-on sets, or “trucks,” including a golf cart, a hair salon, shower and toilet. Five teachers from Garibaldi are part of the production and Lacroix roped in two alumni – Andy McComb and Tyler Herman – to play a gay couple who sing one of her favourite songs in the musi-

cal – Gay or European? She also increased the size of the stage by 30 per cent during summer break to accommodate a scene which features 11 girls skipping. “I have so many girls in my program, so many great girls. That’s why I picked this show. Now all the girls have a lead,” says Lacroix. “I don’t like the movie, but the musical is nothing like the movie. It’s a complete breath of fresh air, even men will like it.” The production and cast took a double hit last week, though, as two former students, who were helping behind the scenes were injured in a car crash that killed another Garibaldi grad Crystal Weaver. Dawson Spencer, 17,

who was driving the car that hit the Honda Weaver was travelling in, was also killed. Lacroix wants the show to go on, but intends to honour Weaver and Spencer on opening night on Tuesday. “That’s what Crystal would want,” she says.

Gordon Kirkland’s ninth book is a collection of 40 stories Best-selling and award-winning author Gordon Kirkland returns to the short essay format that marked his first six books in his latest tome My Slice Of Life Is Full Of Gristle. “Last year we made my back list available to readers using Amazon’s Kindle electronic reader,” Kirkland said. “The sales were beyond anything I could have hoped for or anticipated. As a result, I started hearing from readers, asking me to write another collection of short humorous essays.” Three of those earlier books received the Stephen Leacock Award of Merit For Humour. His first book, Justice Is Blind – And Her Dog Just Peed In My Cornflakes – took the award in 2000, and his second book, Never Stand Be-

hind A Loaded Horse, won it in 2005. His third book, When My Mind Wanders It Brings Back Souvenirs, won in 2006. All three books were based on stories Kirkland had written originally for his syndicated newspaper column that ran in Canadian and American newspapers from 1994 to 2007. “I was a little hesitant Kirkland at ﬁrst,” he said. “I hadn’t written in that format for four years, and didn’t have the pool of stories to draw from the way I did when I was writing the column every week. I started writing a few essays, and found it was like running into an old friend on the street. I just needed to remember those times and situations where I had said that something would have made great material for a

column.” My Slice of Life Is Full Of Gristle features stories on a wide array of topics ranging from the experience of swimming with a nine-foot shark to the news about a company that makes prosthetic testicles for neutered dogs. It comes hard on the heels of Kirkland’s novel The Plight Before Christmas, which was released last September. In the weeks leading up to the holidays that book hit No. 1 on the Amazon Kindle Parenting and Family Humor Best Sellers List. “I started work on the new book after completing The Plight Before Christmas,” Kirkland added. “It was a nice way to keep writing instead of delving right back into another novel.”

Kirkland is currently working on a sequel to his comedic mystery Crossbow. He is also drafting a novella for next year’s holiday season, featuring the antics of the ‘less than brilliant’ police dog from that series. The book is available from Amazon in both paperback and Kindle e-reader editions.

by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Pitt Meadows Marauders Air Force clinched the AAA Fraser Valley North division title in dramatic fashion Friday night, as they topped the rival Terry Fox Ravens 71-68 in overtime. With the win, Pitt finishes league play with a perfect 10-0 record, and will play at home this week during the Fraser Valley finals. The senior boys’ basketball team faced a raucous crowd in Port Coquitlam as the No. 2-ranked Marauders faced down the province’s No. 5-ranked AAA team in the Ravens, Friday night. Both teams were a perfect 9-0 in league play heading into the game, with the winner to claim the league title. The Ravens jumped on the Marauders early. After Pitt was able to get their bearings late in the first quarter, they found themselves down by just a point to start the second, 15-14. The Ravens stretched their lead to nine by the end of the half, as their aggressive offence caught the Pitt Meadows defence napping. “They really drove to the basket unbelievably hard,” said Pitt Meadows coach Rich Goulet. “ Down 34-25 to start the second half, the Marauders charged back to outscore the Ravens 27-10 in the third quarter to take the lead. The Ravens clawed their way back in the final quarter, tying up the game 63-63 in the final minutes to send the game to overtime. The two teams battled back and forth for much of the extra frame. Pitt Meadows pulled ahead thanks to a full court drive by Mitsu Iwai, and a pair of free throws by Matt Blackaby to give Pitt the three-point win. Trevor Severinski led the Marauders in scoring with 32 points and 14 rebounds.

In 2003, Pitt took their league title and hosted the Fraser Valleys, only to lose twice at home and failed to advance to the provincial championships. “Step by step, game by game, we’re getting closer,” said Goulet. “It’s important not to get ahead of ourselves.” The bedrock of Pitt’s success this season has been the team’s defence, which hasn’t allowed a B.C. opponent to score more than 70 points all season.

However, the team needs to address a recent string shaky starts, he said. “We’ve been pretty consistent this season, but we need to cinch our defence in earlier,” said Goulet. “We need to be working harder, sooner, so we’re not playing catch-up.”

The newly named head coach of the Ridge Meadows Flames didn’t have to wait long to notch his first win with club. Unfortunately for coach Jamie Fiset, he wasn’t there to witness it. The Flames trounced the Mission Icebreakers 7-1 on Thursday, giving Fiset his first win as head coach of the local junior B hockey team. Fiset was hundreds of kilometres away, however, attending his daughter’s hockey tournament in the Okanagan. “It’s something I do every year, and it just happened to fall on last weekend,” he said. “The guys were texting me from the dressing room, so I was in the loop.” Despite not being able to witness it in person, Fiset said the win was crucial for the club as it moves towards the playoffs. “Thursday’s game was huge,” he said. “We needed to have a strong showing, and we did.” The Flames had no problems generating offence, despite the absence of leading scorer Danny Brandys. Trevor Harris opened the scoring for the Flames early in the first period. Goals by Alexander Smith, Trevor Sutton, and Keagan Hunter soon followed, giving the Flames a 4-0 lead going into the second period. The Icebreakers scored shorthanded just 14 seconds into the middle frame, but it would be their only goal. Sean Pesut scored twice in the third period, while Bradley Wardner had one goal, to give the Flames a 7-1 win. Matthew Bissett finished with three assists, while goalie Wesley McLeod stopped 36 of 37 shots he faced. Fiset and the Flames didn’t fare as well Friday night, as the hometown Flames fell 2-1 to the visiting Port Moody Black Panthers. JENSEN, Vagn Feb 25, 1928 - Jan 31, 2012 Vagn was born in Denmark and immigrated to Canada in the 1950’s. He married Pearl in 1956. He is survived by his 3 children: Alan (Linda), Lynn (Steve), Russ (Tracy), grandchildren Annelise, Tanner, Eric & Brittany, as well as many nieces & nephews in Denmark. Vagn loved the outdoors, hunting, camping and wildlife. He was resourceful and a good inventor. He loved his vegetable garden and enjoyed wood carving. He still drove his Bronco, which he bought new in 1970. Vagn’s creative use of the English language combined with his sense of humor and Danish accent will never be forgotten. He will be remembered fondly by his family, friends and neighbours.
