NOVEMBER TURKEY TALES (Ages 3-8, with adult) At Maplewood Nature Center Wednesday, Nov 25, 10:30AM Read “Tiny Tom” and learn all about wild turkeys and other winter active animals. Gather acorns for winter, touch and feel animal feathers and fur, and make a turkey craft to take home. Fee: $4 per child. Prepay by Nov. 24.

NATURE FAMILY FUN WITH ECFE Wiggly Snake, Slippery Salamander (For children birth - 5 years, before kindergarten) Date: 11/21/15 Time: 10:00-11:30am Location: Maplewood Nature Center Make nature discoveries, get resources to explore & protect your world together, and meet new friends! This class is offered at the Maplewood Nature Center in collaboration with Early Childhood and Family Education staff. Parents stay with their child(ren) during the entire class. DECEMBER NATURALIST ACTIVITIES FOR WEBELOS SCOUTS AT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTER Saturday, December 5, 9:30AM-11:30AM Visit hands-on learning stations to identify common wildlife, and learn about poisonous plants and animals in Minnesota. Explore wetland and woodland habitats on a hike using binoculars. Many of the program activities help you meet requirements for a Webelos Naturalist Activity Badge. Badges are not provided by the Nature Center. Fee: $4/child. Scout leaders register online www.maplewoodnaturecenter.com by December 2nd.

MEET THE ANIMALS (For all ages) AT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTER Saturday, December 12, 2:00PM-3:00PM Meet a snake, salamander, toad & turtle, and learn more about Minnesota’s wild animals and where they are in the winter. You can share your stories about real wild animal encounters, if you choose! Make a slithering craft, and have a hoppy good time! Free. Register by Friday, December 11th


BUILD A BIRDFEEDER (2nd grade and up, with adult.) AT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTER Wednesday, December 30 10:00AM–11:00AM or 11:00AM-Noon Attention grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts! Here’s something fun to do together with your elementary-aged kid during holiday break. Build a birdfeeder with reclaimed cedar fencing, and learn which Minnesota native winter birds will visit your feeder. Your backyard birdfeeder will be a joy to you & the birds all winter long. Fee: Prepay $5/birdfeeder by Dec. 29 JANUARY

FREE! SNOW FLAKE WONDERS (All ages) AT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTER Saturday, January 2, 1:00PM-3:00PM, Drop-in, no registration necessary. Cut and create beautiful snowflakes for your windows. Learn how snowflakes are formed in the sky, and peer at preserved snowflake crystals up close on the microcam. Drop in for a half-hour for self-guiding activities or stay the whole time! Nature Center exhibits and trails open. Snowshoes available for rent all day if we have snow.

WINTER OPEN HOUSE: SNOWSHOES & TRACKS (All Ages) At Maplewood Nature Center Saturday, January 16, 10:00AM-3:00PM Snowshoes available to rent for ages 4 to adult. Learn how to walk, run, and turn around on snowshoes. Learn about Animal Tracks and Signs from self -guiding activities. A naturalist will answer nature questions, and orient you to the nature center trails. Try wood or metal snowshoes (wood snowshoes require 6+ inches of snow). Sleds will be available for pulling young kids. Dress in layers and wear winter boots. Hot chocolate for all attendees! Free to attend. Drop-in program. Snowshoe rental: $5/pair.

FUR TRADE HERITAGE (Best for adults and kids ages 6 and up) AT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTER Saturday, January 30, 1:30PM-2:30PM Assume the persona of a voyageur from this historical era! Examine historical replicas of fur trade items. Make a spark from flint and steel, drill a hole with a pump drill. Try on a capote and moustache and practice your French Accent! Ooh la la, c’est fun! Small scout groups are welcome. Snowshoe rental available afterward. Fee: $5 per family. Prepay by Jan 28.


FEBRUARY

SNOWSHOE HIKE (Ages four and up, children accompanied by adult) AT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTER Saturday, February 13, 10:00AM-Noon Learn about snowshoes, strap on a pair, and walk with a naturalist through our Winter Wonderland. Instruction and snowshoes provided. Wear sturdy winter boots and bring your own mug for hot cocoa. *Note: if snow is scarce, we will hike to search for animal tracks. Fee: $5/person, prepay by Feb 12

BEARS-BLACK, BROWN AND POLAR BY STAN TEKIELA - Adults At Maplewood Performing Arts Theatre, Maplewood Community Center, 2100 White Bear Avenue , Maplewood, MN Wednesday, February 10, 2016 6:30-7:00 Check-in, Book Sales and Signing 7:00-8:00 Presentation 8:15 Drawing for Door Prize Free, Please call the Maplewood Nature Center to register at 249-2170, seating is limited. Sponsored by the Friends of Maplewood Nature and Ashland Productions Stan Tekiela has authored more than 130 field guides, nature appreciation books and wildlife audio CD's for nearly every state in the nation, presenting many species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, trees, wildflowers and cacti. Stan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural History from the University of Minnesota and as an active professional naturalist for more than 25 years, Stan studies and photographs wildlife throughout the United States and has received various national and regional awards for his books and photographs. This talk is based on the book and covers some of the most amazing aspects of bears. This presentation is packed with amazing images of three species of bear found in North America, Black, Brown and Polar Bear. Stan will explain in his fun and entertaining way all about the different kinds of bears along with telling some of the most amazing stories of his adventures in the wild to capture these incredible images. Stan will have a selection of his books for sale at the event.


SNOWSHOE RENTAL! When we get 4-6” fresh snow come out and enjoy it!

 Wooden or aluminum snowshoes available for use on site for $5.00 per pair of snowshoes.  You may also bring your own snowshoes.  Call 651-249-2170 to reserve a time & check conditions. Nature Center WILD Birthday Parties! Live Animal Birthday parties are available for kids ages 4 & up.  Reserve the party room for treats; then visit with a snake, toad, turtle or salamander!  Outdoor hikes & party favors included! You can also register in person, phone or mail with credit card, cash or check by the date indicated. Program sizes are limited, register early. No need to register for Drop-in programs. Most programs are held at the Maplewood Nature Center unless otherwise noted in program description.
