SPOTLIGHT A PARK: WAKEFIELD (COVER PHOTO) The next phase of the Wakefield Park improvements was the replacement of the playground. City Staff worked with residents and Northland Recreation/Little Tikes to design a brand new play area that was safe, full of play value and accessible. The playground was completed by the end of August and has already been enjoyed by hundreds of kids and their families.

The City of Maplewood has picnic facilities at several of our parks. There is a fee, and some shelters require a $100.00 damage deposit to reserve the shelter. Picnic shelters not listed are a “first come, first served” shelter for regular usage by patrons. This does not apply to large organized events. COMMUNITY GYM PARTY PACKAGES

Looking for somewhere to have a party or just get together with friends for some fun? We offer partygoers equipment to play volleyball, basketball, soccer, floor hockey, football, and other activities. Have a game or activity that you would like to play? Bring it with! Must be approved by gym monitor. This is a great option for adult outings, family gatherings, birthday parties, and more! For parties we allow light decorating of the area during your scheduled rental time and we’ll have tables set up when you arrive for gifts, cake or pizza and have the gym ready for fun. Mike Evangelist is our Photo Scavenger Hunt Winner for 2019! Mike visited various parks throughout the City of Maplewood and took pictures at each site. Mike’s photos are featured below. Mike has been an avid photographer since high school and spends a lot of time exploring and photographing the world around him. A book of his photos “Downtown - Minneapolis in the 1970’s” was recently published by the Minnesota Historical Society.

WINTER ICE RINKS & WARMING HOUSES

Maplewood maintains ten skating rinks throughout the city, four of which have supervised warming houses. Warming houses will not be open when temperatures are -10° or when the windchill reaches -20°. Warming houses will also be closed until the rinks are cleared following snow, and when warm temperatures soften the ice. Call the weather information hotline for closure details: 651-249-2190. MONDAYS, FEBRUARY 3 - JUNE 1, 5:15PM - 6:00PM (NO CLASSES FEB. 17, MAR. 9, & MAY 25) Wish upon a Ballet is a dance program for children that incorporates popular children’s stories as well as ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Using musical instruments, parachutes and scarves we will create a complete fairy tale experience while we skip, leap, jump and spin. This way an introduction to the movements and vocabulary of ballet are taught in a fun and creative manner. Children will learn an appreciation of dance and music while developing strength and flexibility. Come join the fun! Girls and boys will need ballet shoes and wear comfortable clothes they can move around in. Cost is $160

HIP HOP AND TAP (AGES 5-8)

Come learn to leap, turn and shine. This class is not only fun but will improve posture, strength and flexibility in a positive and self-esteem building atmosphere. Ballet or jazz shoes are required. Cost is $160 *Registration fee does not include the costume fee for recital. REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOV 4 • VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED This recreational program is for girls and boys grades 3-8 and is designed to provide all participants with an opportunity to have fun, learn basic basketball skills and learn how to play as a team. Boys and girls will play in separate leagues according to their grade level. The 3rd-4th grade divisions will play their games with 9-foot baskets to provide a positive and rewarding experience for the participants. The 5th-8th grade divisions will use regulation 10-foot baskets. Teams will begin practice in November. Adult volunteer coach needed for each team. Coaches receive a 50% refund of their child’s registration fee upon successful completion of the season.

SENIOR HIGH REC BASKETBALL (BOYS & GIRLS IN GRADES 9-12)

All players must be in high school. Each team must have a parent who is on the bench during each game. All rosters must be handed in one week prior to the team’s first game. Fee includes jersey, scorekeeper, and refereed games. Registration is taken as a full team so grab some friends and sign up your team. Players on a Varsity, Junior Varsity, or B Squad basketball team are not eligible to play in this league. Team fee is $575.00. 2019 ANNUAL REC RUN RECAP RECREATION

Just like last year, the morning of our 6th Annual Maplewood Rec Run 3K/5K started out chilly, quickly warmed up and turned out to be perfect running weather. Runners participated in pre-race fun which included games, tattoos, krazy hair spray, fire and police vehicle tours and visiting with Superman! We had a great turnout and were able to raise $1,100 for our Youth Scholarship Fund. A big thanks to all the volunteers, staff, Maplewood Police and Fire departments and police reserves. The event was a huge success!

Dance the night away with instructors from Dance and Entertainment Studios during our 6 week dance sessions. All ages and levels are welcome in these beginner level classes. Those without partners will rotate with each other and the instructor. Meet new friends and practice leading and following your new dance patterns-that’s what social dancing is all about!

THURSDAYS, NOVEMBER 7 - DECEMBER 26 (NO CLASS NOV 28 & DEC 19)

SESSION 1: 6:00PM - 6:50PM: Rumba & Swing series: These dances cover the most common rhythm tempos and widest variety of music styles played at dance venues and wedding receptions. Rumba can be danced slow or fast and stays in place not taking up much room on the dance floor. The Swing we cover in this beginner class is single-time East Coast Swing. It’s the easiest footwork to start with, getting you moving fast to the music. Cost is $75/Person. SESSION 2: 7:00PM - 7:50PM: Cha-Cha & Waltz series: These dances are detailed in their music tempos and give the dedicated dancers more variety of footwork, patterns, and movement around the dance floor. Cha-Cha has a unique rhythm and is commonly used when dancing Salsa is too slow. You’ve got more time in the music to fill it in with “cha-cha-cha.” Waltz will be shown as both a box-step rhythm, and as a large traveling dance around the floor, so it can be used at both Ballroom dance venues and wedding receptions. Cost is $75/Person.

THURSDAYS, JANUARY 2 - FEBRUARY 6

SESSION 1: 6:00PM - 6:50PM: Night Club 2-Step & Foxtrot series: These dances replace some common freestyle dances by giving you more footwork, patterns, and movement. Night Club 2-Step takes a slow song and gives it rhythm and speed with fun patterns that move you throughout the dance floor. Foxtrot will take a Swing or Rumba style dance and enlarge it while traveling around the dance floor to classic big band music. Cost is $75/Person. SESSION 2: 7:00PM - 7:50PM: Swing & Salsa series: These dances have been on the “most popular” list for years! They follow trends in music style and don’t take up much room on the dance floor, making it easy to dance at any venue. The Swing we cover in this beginner class is single-time East Coast Swing. It’s the easiest footwork to start with, getting you moving fast to the music. In addition to current pop music, Swing goes to big band and 50’s-60’s rock & roll music. Salsa actually has simple footwork but appears difficult because the music is fast. Cost is $75/Person.

SESSION 1: 6:00PM - 6:50PM: Tango & Swing series: These dances cover both strict tempo styles and more relaxed freestyle dances. Tango is a very fun partner dance with a unique rhythm using five steps in eight beats of music. Everyone will recognize the Tango rhythm in Hernando’s Hideaway! Grab a partner, because it takes two, you know! The Swing we cover in this beginner class is single-time East Coast Swing. It’s the easiest footwork to start with, getting you moving fast to the music. Cost is $75/Person. SESSION 2: 7:00PM - 7:50PM: Waltz & Rumba series: These dances cover a wide variety of music played at wedding receptions-the beautiful and classic Waltz for parents and grandparents, and the modern Rumba box-step for brides, grooms, and social dancers. Waltz will be shown as both a box-step rhythm and as a traveling dance around the floor. Rumba works to almost any rhythm of music, can be danced slow or fast, and stays in place not taking up much room on the dance floor. Cost is $75/Person.

SESSION 1: 6:00PM - 6:50PM: West Coast Swing & Salsa series: These dances are very specific to their music type and are great for the dedicated dancers. You will expand both your music and dance knowledge with these styles of dances. West Coast Swing is danced in a “slot position” and goes to blues, jazz, and pop music, slow and fast. The goal of the Adopt-A-Park Program is to provide an opportunity for interested parties to take part in maintaining our parks system. Providing this opportunity not only encourages and promotes community involvement, but also allows us to beautify and improve our parks. All Adopt-A-Park projects should aim towards benefiting the majority of park users. This opportunity is available to any individual, family, resident, group organization, or business that is eager to help beautify our parks. The Adopt-A-Park commitment period is from April 1 – October 31. Applications are accepted throughout the year and require a minimum of once a month dedication.

ADULT ATHLETIC SIGN SPONSORSHIP

The adult athletic sign sponsorship is a unique marketing opportunity for local businesses. Maplewood Parks & Recreation has started an outfield sign program at Goodrich Park. This is an opportunity to purchase one, two, or three 4’ x 8’ outfield signs that are visible from the softball fields as well as North St. Paul Road. Goodrich Park houses the entire adult softball program (summer, fall and late fall leagues) and hosts multiple youth tournaments throughout the season. The funds from these sponsorships will go directly to maintaining and upgrading this facility, keeping the fields suitable for the high level of play they receive.

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Youth Scholarship Fund serves Maplewood residents (under 18 years) who demonstrate a financial need and may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs. Qualifying families are asked to pay 1/3 of the program fee and the scholarship fund covers the remaining 2/3 of the fee. Sponsorship of our scholarship program is a great way to show your support for Maplewood Parks & Recreation and the community. The mission of the Johnson Como North St. Paul Hockey Association (JCNSP) is to empower all players with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for success through the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship in the game of hockey. This program’s goal is to form a competitive hockey association that will host traveling hockey teams. The Maplewood Area Historical Society and the Bruentrup Heritage Farm is located on 2.5 acres of land with nine buildings that date back to 1891. The North Polars Fastpitch Association (NPFA) is a non-profit organization established to foster the girl’s fastpitch softball program in the area of Independent School District 622, which is within the boundaries of North St. Paul High School. The association exists to fulfill the girl’s fastpitch softball needs of the community and is the primary advocate of the traveling program.
