“I like to see Beach Blanket Babylon at least once a year because the singers are so incredible! The show is such a brilliant, high paced, fun show!”

Michael Tilson Thomas

Music Director, San Francisco Symphony

Located 1 block from the show!

“Beach Blanket Babylon continues to bring raucous witty disorder and irreverence to this beautiful city by the bay. Steve Silver¹s genius is that he understood this zany musical spoof of our pop culture would stand the test of time . . . I love the theater, and Steve was a master at turning social commentary into hilarious parodies of our favorite celebrities . . .”

Willie L. Brown

Former Mayor of San Francisco and San Francisco Chronicle columnist

“Beach Blanket Babylon is the most fun of any show, anywhere in the universe!”

John Cleese

Actor, Comedian, Writer, Producer

“Genius is OK, but only real genius has staying power. Beach Blanket Babylon is genius forever as a show that dazzles, laughs, changes with the times, sparkles with wit. The cast is terrific and, as you enjoy, you shake your head and say, hello San Francisco and Beach Blanket by the Bay.”

George P. Shultz

Former Secretary of State

STEVE SILVER 1944-1995 Creator Steve Silver’s magical contributions to the world of theater were his imagination and whimsy. His first theater job, in 1969, was tearing tickets at North Beach’s hungry i (then a cutting-edge nightclub). While getting his fine arts master’s degree at San Jose State University, he produced what might today be called performance art pieces. He was assistant art director for the cult classic movie Harold and Maude. His Rent-A-Freak productions attracted the American Conservatory Theater (ACT), the public and the police. He was an associate director at ACT. His street performances drew crowds of hundreds. When paddy wagons arrived, Steve moved the then-titled A Valentine’s Show indoors to the Savoy Tivoli. He renamed the hit show Beach Blanket Babylon on June 7, 1974; and one of San Francisco’s jewels began to sparkle. His boyish exuberance, creative incongruity, outlandish visual sensibility and zany sense of delight made him constantly add to, change and tinker with the show. He continued to entertain distinguished visitors and San Francisco citizens at charitable and other public events: in 1983, honoring Queen Elizabeth; and in 1988, the de Young Museum’s exhibit Beach Blanket Babylon – 15 Years of Hats and Costumes. His longtime dream of recreating and restaging Beach Blanket Babylon’s history came true May 24, 1994, with the 20th Anniversary Show and Beach Party, at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. A philanthropist as well as a showman, he gave generously–to museums, libraries, education, medical research, and the arts–which add to the beauty and splendor of the city he loved, San Francisco.

Tommy Tune Top Hat Award Winner In San Francisco on June 7, 1974, Steve Silver produced a small show in the back room of the Savoy Tivoli Restaurant. There were 214 seats crammed into the tiny space–prime seating was anything within ten feet of the ten coveted cocktail tables up front. The floor was covered with two tons of sand; a lifeguard tore tickets at the door and sprayed the backs of people’s hands with Coppertone*. For $2.50, audience members got a 45 minute show with four main performers, a chorus line of hula-dancing middle-aged housewives doing card stunts, a band dressed as poodles, one lighting man on top of a lifeguard stand manipulating Folger’s† coffee can lights, and a whole lot of laughs.

The show was to run for six weeks. That was over forty years ago... After a brief stint in the fall of 1974 at Club Olympus, the show opened at Club Fugazi–the date was June 25, 1975. The show became an expanded version of the Tivoli and Olympus shows. But it now included more characters, grander sets, a larger cast, and what was to become a trademark of the show, BIGGER HATS! Through the years, there have been many versions of Beach Blanket Babylon, but some things have remained consistent–outrageous humor, wacky characterizations, unexpected parody, and the biggest hats in the world, along with the element of surprise. Beach Blanket Babylon was invited to perform at the White House, performed before Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, and had a successful run in Las Vegas. It also was spotlighted in a costume exhibit at San Francisco’s de Young Museum. Beach Blanket Babylon was featured in the BBC presentation of Tales of the City, in a PBS documentary, in a UPN-TV special Steve Silver’s Beach Blanket Babylon: A Silver Anniversary Salute, in the film The World of Steve Silver and a book, Beach Blanket Babylon: A Hats-Off Tribute to San Francisco’s Most Extraordinary Musical Revue. A guest of the 1997 Covent Garden Musical Arts Festival, Beach Blanket Babylon played to enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews in London. Today it continues to play to sold-out crowds in San Francisco. *Coppertone is a registered trademark of Schering-Plough. †Folger’s is a registered trademark of The Folger Company, a subsidiary of Proctor & Gamble.
